The Terror of Wi-Fi Sickness

0

the terror of wifi sickness 2015 techAre you familiar with Stephen King’s novel “Cell?” “Cell” is the master of horror’s modern take on a zombie apocalypse wherein according to the synopsis, a strange signal is transmitted to people currently talking on their cellphones. The signal messes with their brains and transforms them into rampaging zombies. I like the premise. I even bought the book since I’m a fan of the genre but I’ve yet to find the time to read it being busy and all. I miss the days when I was still on the commute going through book after book paperback or digital. With regards to cellphone signals, there’s been the never-ending debate whether or not cellphone signals, RF, NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other electro-magnetic frequencies can cause serious or undetermined long-term effects on human health.

This debate has been sparked once again when a family in Southboro, Massachusetts is suing a local boarding school where the school’s Wi-Fi signal made their boy sick. The 12-year old boy apparently has Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome, described by Wikipedia as follows:

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) is characterized by a group of symptoms purportedly caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields. A more specific term used in medical literature is idiopathic environmental intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI-EMF). Other terms for IEI-EMF include electrohypersensitivity, electro-sensitivity, and electrical sensitivity (ES). Idiopathic refers to the fact that the cause is unknown.

Although the thermal effects of electromagnetic fields on the body are established, those who are self-described with electromagnetic hypersensitivity report responding to non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (or electromagnetic radiation) at intensities well below the maximum levels permitted by international radiation safety standards.

The school’s Wi-Fi signal allegedly caused the boy to suffer from headaches, nausea and nosebleeds which started when the school upgraded to a stronger wireless signal back in 2013. The family wants the school to shut down its wireless signal and 250,000 dollars in damages. The school meanwhile had their wi-fi signals along with other background emissions and found that everything was well within safety limits.

“…Isotrope’s assessment was completed in January 2015 and found that the combined lvels of access point emissions, broadcast radio and television signals and other RFE emissions on campus were substantially less than one ten-thousandths of the applicable safety limits…”

Fay School

Majority of the population would certainly dispute the claim that Wi-Fi would have adverse effects on human health as Wi-Fi is practically everywhere. In malls, in coffee shops, in restaurants and Google even wants to spread Wi-Fi to unreachable areas through its Loon project. We’re bombarded by Wi-Fi signals up to the bathroom and even go looking for it in unlikely places in order to tweet or post something. So, yes. If Wi-fi was indeed dangerous to one’s health, it wouldn’t have been approved. Worst case scenario, if it could be proven, it would be up there with smoking cigarettes.

To be fair to the family, if what they say is true, there is some merit to the boy’s condition if the thing started when the school strengthened its Wi-Fi; that the background signals were tolerable to the boy until that time. But if the condition wasn’t diagnosed before, the boy could have been subjected to even stronger signals at malls and other public places. As Spock would say, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” The parents would be better off home schooling the boy or moving elsewhere out of reach from other Wi-Fi signals that their neighbors use or will use in the future instead of forcing the school to use other means of communication as the association between Wi-Fi and EHS has yet to be proven. This is not to discriminate against the boy but for health reasons as well.

It’s likely that most courts would throw the case out the window. As Wikipedia (though not a 100% reliable source) states with regards to EHS:

“The majority of provocation trials to date have found that self-described sufferers of electromagnetic hypersensitivity are unable to distinguish between exposure and non-exposure to electromagnetic fields, and it is not recognized as a medical condition by the medical or scientific communities. Since a systematic review in 2005 showing no convincing scientific evidence for its being caused by electromagnetic fields, several double-blind experiments have been published, each of which has suggested that people who report electromagnetic hypersensitivity are unable to detect the presence of electromagnetic fields and are as likely to report ill health following a sham exposure as they are following exposure to genuine electromagnetic fields, suggesting the cause to be the nocebo effect”

The World Health Organization itself states that:

“EHS is characterized by a variety of non-specific symptoms that differ from individual to individual. The symptoms are certainly real and can vary widely in their severity. Whatever its cause, EHS can be a disabling problem for the affected individual. EHS has no clear diagnostic criteria and there is no scientific basis to link EHS symptoms to EMF exposure. Further, EHS is not a medical diagnosis, nor is it clear that it represents a single medical problem. “

Even the association between living near power lines and cancer as well as the association between CRT radiation and pregnancy miscarriages have yet to be solidified, Wi-Fi signals are at a much lower magnitude than the aforementioned. Remember when our parents keep reminding us not to stay close to the TV? It was actually more related to the blue light spectrum (too much is bad for the eyes) than actual radiation.

Then again, just to be safe and to conserve power, turn off all your mobile phones and Wi-Fi hotspots before bedtime.

BIG BROTHER 1733 Steve Takes On Austin & Liz

big brother 1733 julia ready 2015The power in the house shifted once again on tonight’s episode of “Big Brother,” and Liz said tonight reminded her of a category 5 hurricane and she knew she had to win head of household for herself and Julia. Steven said he was relieved to see James go because he was the only one Steve never had an alliance with. John said it was time to have a blood bath. Austin told Steve he didn’t want to put him up for eviction. Austin said it might not be in his best interest to win head of household this week. Vanessa said it was time for her to go after Austin and the twins. Steve said he, John and Vanessa were in good positions to win head of household for the week.

This week’s head of household competition involved players having to figure out which former housemate was not included in baseball card pictures that they saw in a series of photos, one after another. Vanessa said Austin and the twins had to be broken up. John said it was time to stop Austin and the twins from running the house. Vanessa was the first one to be eliminated from the head of household competition. Austin was the second one eliminated and Julia was the third one eliminated. She said if John won head of household he would put Liz up for eviction because she put him up for eviction. Liz said she was rooting for Steve and she didn’t trust John. Steve won this week’s head of household competition. He said now he would have to go after Austin and the twins.

big brother 1733 austin liz nominated for eviction 2015Julia said that Steve better not put herself and Liz up for eviction because whichever one gets to stay will go after him. Steve said he didn’t believe Austin when Austin said he’d throw his game for Steve’s benefit. Liz said she would cut off Austin if he and Steve were conspiring to get rid of Julia.

John said he noticed the twins are all about Steve because he is head of household now. Liz confessed to Julia that Austin is a lousy kisser and she hates his beard. Steve realized if he got rid of Austin Vanessa would be loyal to him. He said he dreaded the possibility of nominating Austin for eviction. Austin asked Steve if he was targeting Liz for eviction and he said he didn’t know yet. Steve said he didn’t know how much longer he could help Austin stay in the game.

Steve said he had a difficult decision to make because he has alliances with everyone in the house. Steve nominated Austin and Liz and said that’s what was best for his game. Liz said she felt betrayed by Steve. Steve said he was killing the alliance between Austin and the twins.

I AM CAIT 107: What’s In A Name Plus Kris Jenner Tease

caitlyn jenner i am cait 107 with kris jenner 2015Season 1 Episode 7 of I Am Cait “What’s in a Name” is all about Caitlyn Jenner’s speech at the ESPYs and confronting her ex-wife Kris Jenner for the first time since fully transitioning from Bruce to Caitlyn.

The show begins with Caitlyn meeting with Jen Rade, who is Angelina Jolie’s stylist. Caitlyn employed Jen to dress her for the ESPYs, as she reveals she has always admired Angelina’s “causal, elegant and chic” style. Jen explores Caitlyn’s ever-growing wardrobe and is impressed with how chic Caitlyn’s style has already become.

Next, Caitlyn explains that her usual golf course is being shut down for 9 months due to construction. Therefore, she must join a different course for the time being. However, this gets complicated when Caitlyn feels she should sign-up under her old identity (Bruce). Caitlyn’s friend Ronda gets frustrated with Caitlyn’s hesitancy to embracing her new identity on the golf course. Caitlyn tells Ronda she is not ready to “worry about locker rooms and all that crap.” When the topic is brought up with Caitlyn’s fellow transgender friend Candis Cayne, Candis tells Caitlyn she needs to get over her fears and sign everything as Caitlyn from now on. Candis tells her she is no longer in the phase where she can waiver between Bruce and Caitlyn.

Later in the episode, as Caitlyn prepares for her speech, she reveals that she is very anxious and nervous. She goes on to explain that she has struggled with dyslexia her whole life, so the idea of reading off of a teleprompter is very intimidating.

In addition, in order to avoid “stupid” questions from the media, Caitlyn says she will be sneaking into the venue during commercial break and leaving right after she accepts the Arthur Ashe award.

Although one would expect the Olympics to be the ultimate point of pressure in a person’s life, Caitlyn says she feels even more pressure speaking at the ESPYs. She goes on to explain, “people die over [the issues surrounding the transgender community], no one was dying at the [Olympic] games.”

At a dinner party before the award show, one of Caitlyn’s friends asks who will be coming out to the ESPYs to support her. Caitlyn then reveals that all her kids will be there, along with her mom and sisters, but her ex-wife Kris Jenner would not be coming as the two haven’t spoken much at all for months.

During the dinner party, Caitlyn’s mother Esther gets a chance to interact with her daughter’s new trans-friends. Esther takes the opportunity to talk to Chandi and Candis about their transition and when they knew something was different about them. Esther was visibly shocked when Candis revealed that she had transitioned into a female over 20 years ago.

Caitlyn’s speech goes smoothly at the awards, and she says it feels like a “huge weight has been lifted off [her] shoulders” once she finished. She had been adamant that she wanted to address not only her own story, but also the stories that are going on within the trans-community. During a one-on-one camera confession, Caitlyn says she felt “so vulnerable” on stage at the ESPYs, as she was standing there as “all Caitlyn, totally out.”

After the awards, Caitlyn reveals that she was very sad that Kris didn’t end up coming to support her. This feeling causes Caitlyn to take action and solve some of the tension that has been plaguing her and Kris’ relationship since they decided to split.

At first Caitlyn is not able to reach Kris, but eventually she gets a hold of her over the phone and invites her over to talk things through and try to mend their relationship (Note: they do share two young daughters together, Kylie and Kendall).

The episode ends with Kris coming over to Caitlyn’s Malibu home. Kris enters the home with a smile, as she complements Caitlyn’s shoes. However, the tone changes quickly as things get more serious and somewhat awkward between the former couple.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait till next week’s episode of I Am Cait to see the rest of Caitlyn’s brutally honest and open conversation with her ex, Kris Jenner.

The show continues to be extremely focused on the philanthropy that Caitlyn has been doing surrounding the trans-community. With each episode, Caitlyn ensures to show that she is learning from other transgender people in order to become a more knowledgeable and suitable advocate for the community.

I think it would be interesting if the show touched on Caitlyn’s legal issues surrounding the car accident she was involved in (before her full transition), in which a woman died. However, adding this in would definitely stray away from the established tone of the show.

Catch next week’s episode “A New Beginning” of I Am Cait on E! Network, Sunday.

BACHELOR IN PARADISE 211: Ashley I Intact & Crying, Kirk Carly Over

ashley i intact cries for jared bachelor in paradise 211 2015As we enter the finale of the second season of Bachelor in Paradise, the show manages to throw every twist and turn they can.

The show begins with Ashley I. and Jared, who are on a date that is followed by a fantasy suite. Although Jared doesn’t seem to into Ashley, he agrees to join her in the fantasy suite. During the one-on-one camera Ashley ponders the thought of losing her virginity to Jared saying, “I’m a virgin because I was waiting for the right guy, for love. I like Jared a lot. He may be that guy.” Seems like Ashley may have forgotten that Jared tried breaking things off with her like two weeks ago, when he revealed he was still hung up on Kaitlyn Bristowe.

The last shot we see of Jared and Ashley is of them sitting awkwardly on the bed. The cameras pan away and leave it unclear whether they got intimate with each other or not.

The next day, Jared and Ashley return to paradise. A group of their fellow cast mates ask them how the date went and unfortunately Jared doesn’t seem too enthusiastic as he barely mumbles an answer. However, Ashley was a bit more hyped claiming it was “so good!” She is then seen confessing to the one-on-one camera saying, “[Jared] looks perfect sleeping. He is amazing and I am in love with Jared!”

Unfortunately, Jared has a whole different perspective on the date as he tells the other guys that “nothing really happened” in the fantasy suite and that he is nervous about breaking things off with her, as he doesn’t think she is “going to take it well.”

Jared was definitely accurate when he predicted she wasn’t going to take the “break up” well. He tries to let her down gently, but right away she gets emotional. He ends up leaving Paradise early, as he wants to ensure Ashley is not “suffering” because of him for any longer. As he drives away, Ashley continues to cry to all her cast mates on the beach, saying she will never find someone like Jared again.

Meanwhile, Mikey decides to trust his feelings and break things off with Juelia, as he doesn’t feel a strong romantic connection with her. He tells her “I came back here for you. You know that. And I really, really wanted to see where we could go. I think the world of you. I think that you’re the sweetest, nicest person and I mean that genuinely.” Going on to break the news saying. “There’s been times where, because you’re such an awesome person, that I’ve been almost forcing it.”

Unfortunately, Juelia is caught completely off guard, as she was just previously shown saying how grateful she was for her blossoming relationship with Mikey. She breaks down to the camera saying, “I was finally feeling something and it lasted for like, a day.”

Despite the sad fate of multiple couples, there are still a few relationships that are just beginning in the last week of the show. Cassandra, a new addition to Paradise, shows up and winds up asking Justin on a horseback riding date. After the date Cassandra admits, “I’ve been looking for a guy like Justin forever.”

In addition, Nick ends up convincing Jaclyn to give him her unused date card so that he can take Samantha out. They end up on a luxurious dinner date, although Nick looks a lot more into it than Samantha. It’s the last week in Paradise and something tells me Samantha is just doing whatever it takes to get a rose, not necessarily find love.

Back at camp, Carly and Kirk seem to be going strong as they talk about marriage, kids and their future together.

Chris Harrison approaches the gang and tells them it is time for the final rose ceremony. He explains that the guys will be handing out the roses to someone they can “see a future with” and are willing to be “committed” to.

This announcement leads to Ashley I. deciding to leave early as she explains, “I’m leaving on my own because yesterday I cried about Jared, this morning I cried about Jared, and tomorrow I’ll cry about Jared.” In the car, she tells her sister over the phone that she hadn’t lost her virginity, but claims she got “close enough.”

At the rose ceremony, Kirk gives his rose to Carly, Tanner to Jade, Joshua to Tenley. Nick to Samantha, and lastly Justin gives his rose to Cassandra. Dan, who didn’t feel he had a connection he could honestly commit to, decides to leave without handing out his rose. Lastly, Mikey offers his rose to McKenzie, but unfortunately she declines and they both end up leaving Paradise.

This also leaves Ashley S., Amber, Chelsie and Jaclyn packing their things and heading home.

Although the cast members “dropped like flies,” the big shake-up occurs the day after the final rose ceremony.

Chris Harrison gathers the remaining couples (Kirk/Carley, Joshua/Tenley, Tanner/Jade, Nick/Samantha and Justin/Cassandra) and tells them that they will be given a romantic one-on-one date that is followed by a fantasy suite.

All of the girls are visibly excited for the fantasy suites, including Jade and Carly who both say they feel completely comfortable with their men.

Unfortunately, Kirk begins doubting his relationship with Carly. He tells the fellow guys, “I’ve had a few doubts over the last few days – well, week – and I can’t do it to her anymore.” Going on to say, “last night she talked about having my kids. I’m not there. I’m way behind where she ‘s at. I can’t let it go on any longer.”

kirk carly break up bachelor in paradise 2015The episode ends with Kirk finally confessing to Carly that he is “afraid [he] is a lot behind” in terms of their relationship. As Kirk ends the couple’s enviable Paradise fling, Carly remains relatively calm and composed but is inevitably upset. Kirk attempts to make things better by telling her how much he cares about her, however this doesn’t help and Carly announces she is going to leave immediately. She runs off before Kirk can finish his sentences and runs into the Jade and Tenley’s arms, as they help her pack her things and get out of “Paradise.”

Watching Carly cry, Tanner tells the confessional that he thinks that it was a “d***” move on Kirk’s part to wait till the last minute to end things with her. In addition, both Jade and Tenley call Kirk an “idiot” for allowing Carly to think their relationship was stronger than it truly was.

Although Carly no longer has Kirk to rely on, she at least became good friends with Tenley and Jade.

Both Kirk and Carly end up leaving Paradise in tears.

Sneak Peak:

The finale of Bachelor in Paradise promises viewers more tears and emotional breakups, as well as at least one couple potentially making “the biggest commitment of their lives.” (The promos hint at an engagement between two of the cast mates).

Check out the final episode of Bachelor in Paradise on Monday, August 7, 2015 on ABC at 8pm.

True AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR Daniela Bright Interview

0

daniela bright true american ninja warrior interview images 2015Think the obstacles on American Ninja Warrior are hard to get past? No doubt about it, but even the Warped Wall and Invisible Ladder don’t hold a candle to cancer. Daniela Bright has battled this awful disease for over a year, and also found the strength to compete on American Ninja Warrior in 2015.

I got a chance to interview Bright this week to talk ANW, get an update on her health, and she also talked about how her MMA training has helped her inside and outside the cage. Yes, this lady ninja warrior is a mixed martial artist as well!

Daniela isn’t in the finals, but her time on ANW was as inspirational as any of the runners who did manage to make it to Vegas. She told me she’s heard from fans that considered themselves lazy, but were motivated to get going by her appearance on ANW. She talked about how it made her smile to hear from cancer patients who have thanked her for giving them a little bit of strength to “keep fighting.”

daniela bright competing on american ninja warriorIt’s great to look up to super human football players or the Lebron James type guys of this world. But clearly a woman battling cancer, barely able to hold her own body weight during her run on American Ninja Warrior, is a better role model than any internationally known athlete.

I asked Daniela about how her MMA training has helped her in her journey. She told me, “I was surprised at how much I missed the training when I was unable to do so because of being so sick.” MMA strengthened her body to endure her cancer treatment, but also gave her the mental edge to push through chemo.

It was also interesting to hear her response about her MMA plans. “Plans” are a tough thing for her. She knows, as we all should, that plans are best laid out on a day by day basis. There is no tomorrow guaranteed for any of us, and no need to worry about the months and years ahead. Living fully in the present should be good enough.

Bright knows full well the value of each moment.

We also chatted about Ronda Rousey and her impact on womens’ MMA. She had some tips for young athletes entering MMA training. Bright is a very humble person and her advice would help young fighters stay grounded, when it would be easy to think they are going to be the next Ronda Rousey or Demetrious Johnson.

There’s more to be gained from cage fighting than fortune and fame. Daniela Bright is living proof.

daniela bright american nina warrior interview 2015 imagesI don’t think there is a better example of an Ninja Warrior than Daniela. Obviously others have made it further than she did. But the larger point is that she was there. She competed. She didn’t let anything stop her from moving forward.

Not even freaking cancer!

What’s stopping us from achieving greatness? Tired? Boss doesn’t like us? Marathons look hard? Not enough hugs as a kid?

You can see where I’m headed. If Daniela can make it onto the stage of one of the toughest athletic events in the world, then we have no valid excuse for mediocrity. This warrior had the perfect excuse to lay down and give up. She did not, and has not.

Tyga vs Blac Chyna & David Beckham Talks Life After Soccer

tyga responds to blac chyna amber rose 2015 gossipSince rapper Tyga has had money problems in the past, its no surprise that many criticized him gifting his 18-year-old girlfriend Kylie Jenner a leased Ferrari.

Evidently, Tyga has caught wind of the criticism and took to Instagram to call out his ex and baby momma Blac Chyna for being the possible source behind the shade. Tyga posted a picture of himself with the caption reading, “When the hating don’t work they start telling lies. #WhereYoFerrariTho ?”

Since calling Amber a “peanut head,” neither Amber nor Blac Chyna have responded to Tyga’s seemingly immature post. Although, it wouldn’t be all too surprising if this ends up being a long, drawn-out social media based feud between the three.

david beckham life after soccer 2015 gossipDavid Beckham opened up to London The Times about his future career plans, as his soccer career comes to a close. It is not too surprising that the internationally known soccer star-turned-underwear model is thinking of venturing further into film.

David tells the paper, “I am very aware that many sportsmen and other celebrities have turned their hand to acting and failed. I know that it is a tough profession, where you need a huge amount of skill and discipline, and I wouldn’t want to push myself forward too soon, without learning more about it, and doing a lot more practice.”

Although Beckham has had numerous cameos in the past including in the recent movie The Man from U.N.C.L.E., it definitely seems as though he is considering taking on more serious and substantial roles as an actor in the future.

David goes on to explain his success so far and being prepared for the criticism that would inevitably come about if he pursued acting, saying, “But what I have done so far, I have loved. I can deal with most things. I am a well-known person, so I have got used to criticism.”

David has a role in the upcoming movie King Arthur, which stars Jude Law, so it seems that he is already slowly transitioning into the movie business from his long career in professional soccer.

Preseason Week 4 NFL Winners and Losers

0

nfl week 4 preseason winners losers images 2015 tom bradyOK, the real losers for week four of the NFL preseason are the fans. The last game before the real deal starts is just a scrimmage where the second and third stringers try to hang on to their NFL dreams. The franchise players are basically kept in bullet proof boxes for protection.

But hey, college football began so we got some real games on Saturday! Don’t be ridiculous. Major schools feasting on tiny colleges that need that welfare NCAA check is not my idea of football at its best. If you have any doubt about the first week of meaningless college football, I simply point to Georgia and Louisiana-Monroe. They just said to hell with the last nine minutes of the game after the second weather delay occurred. If that was UGA and a real opponent like Auburn, they would have waited until 2 a.m. to finish play if necessary.

OK, my college football rant of the day is over. On to the NFL’s winners and losers. Most of these involve roster cuts as teams get down to the tiniest details to fit everyone into that 53 man roster.

NFL Grown Man of the Week: Tom Brady whipped Roger Goodell. I wish it had been in a Road Warriors type Scaffold Match, but a United States courtroom was a close second. Brady had his suspension lifted by a real judge, not a dictator like Goodell. Brady comes out of this smelling like a rose. He beat a bully at his own game and had this to say. “I am sorry our league had to endure this. I don’t think it has been good for our sport – to a large degree, we have all lost. I am also sorry to anyone whose feelings I may have hurt as I have tried to work to resolve this situation.”

“The regular season starts tomorrow morning and I can’t wait to fully commit my energy and emotion to focus on the challenges of the 2015 NFL season. I want to thank my family, my friends, all of the fans, past and current players and my teammates for the support they have given me throughout this challenging experience. I also want to thank Judge Berman and his staff for their efforts to resolve this matter over the past five weeks. I am very grateful. My thanks also to the union’s legal team who has fought so hard right along with me. While I am pleased to be eligible to play, I am sorry our league had to endure this. I don’t think it has been good for our sport – to a large degree, we have all lost. I am also sorry to anyone whose feelings I may have hurt as I have tried to work to resolve this situation. I love the NFL. It is a privilege to be a member of the NFL community and I will always try to do my best in representing my team and the league in a way that would make all members of this community proud. I look forward to the competition on the playing field and I hope the attention of NFL fans can return to where it belongs – on the many great players and coaches who work so hard every week, and sacrifice so much, to make this game great. Most importantly, I look forward to representing the New England Patriots on Thursday night in our season opener. I hope to make all of our fans proud this year … and beyond!”

NFL Children of the Week: Roger Goodell and all the NFL owners who think it wise to appeal Judge Berman’s decision on Tom Brady’s suspension over Deflategate. Goodell and his bosses should just accept this and move forward, but like anyone in power they will do anything to hold onto that power. They know that no player has to just accept whatever punishment Goodell deems appropriate going forward. Every NFLer will just mosey on over to the U.S. Justice System to get the NFL overruled.

How many defeats will it take for Goodell to understand he cannot just run roughshod over his players, no matter how the collective bargaining agreement is set up?

nfl preseason week 4 jarryd hayne winners losers 2015 imagesWinner: Jarryd Hayne has been the highlight of the preseason. It would have been a shame to put his name in the “loser” section of this post had he been cut. Thankfully San Francisco made a spot for the former rugby player. Actually he made a spot for himself. His big plays were hard to ignore and 49ers fans may have burned down their brand new stadium had Hayne not made the team.

Hayne may be the lone bright spot for San Fran this year. Life after Harbaugh may be more sane, but it will also involve a ton of losses. All the key players that retired or got dismissed will make it hard on the fan base that has had so much success the past few years.

Loser: Tim Tebow was not good enough to make Philly’s roster. Go back and read the previous sentence Tebow worshipers. No one is against him. He just can’t play quarterback in the NFL. I am a Tebow fan, but I have known it was over for him for a long time. I enjoyed his college play, but that’s in the past. Appreciate him for what he was as a player.

Maybe Tim Tebow is just too good for the NFL. Too good of a person. There are bigger things in store for this man. Making it to the NFL would have been awesome, but if he is all he’s cracked up to be then he will make the world a better place in some other career.

Winner: Darnell Dockett may have gotten cut by the 49ers but I think his signing bonus of $2 million in the offseason should make him feel better. Oh, to be paid millions then sent home for not being good enough. I long for such a career opportunity. My ego can take getting canned….for the right price. Hell, I’ve been fired for free and it’s really not that bad!

Loser: Antone Smith made big plays for the Atlanta Falcons when he was not hurt. His time with the ATL is over after getting cut though. He will receive an injury settlement however. Smith was a big fan favorite and I couldn’t understand why Mike Smith did not use him more last year. But now that Quinn has cast him aside, it is obvious he didn’t fit the system or bring enough to the table to warrant a spot.

That’s hard to comprehend from the outside looking in, but the staff spends hundreds of hours evaluating these players so they surely have the right knowledge to make these painful decisions.

Winner: Christian Ponder is still married to the gainfully employed Samantha Ponder. Even if she was homeless, he would still be in the winner category. He was cut by the Raiders, though he may not have even noticed. Dude must be living right. He was decent in preseason play and may have a shot with the Eagles.

Loser: Rams fans. They will miss out on seeing Todd Gurley in week one versus Seattle. Coach Fisher is being super cautious with their number one pick to make sure his knee is 100%. He stated that it’s doubtful Gurley will play in the opener. Gurley is a special player so it’s a shame he won’t be on display in week one.

Winner: Todd Gurley. The guy wants to get on the field badly, but is lucky to have a patient coach like Jeff Fisher. No need to rush what could be their franchise player for the next ten years. That ACL needs to be fully healed before he makes his NFL debut. It will be worth the wait if he has the type career in which he capable of having.

Loser:  Reggie Wayne didn’t stick with the Patriots and actually asked to be released according to reports. If this former great wide out can’t stick with New England, who can make a receiver out of nobodies, then he is essentially through. He was great, but no more.

Loser Tweet: Notice the date on Roger Goodell’s latest tweet. It’s a shame that he makes so many wrong moves that silence is his best option on Twitter. Why not just delete the account if you’re not gonna use it Rog?

Winner Tweet: Sports Illustrated offers tips to Roger Goodell on repairing his image. I’m sure this humble man is grateful for any helpful advice.

  • As bonus tweet, I couldn’t leave out one with Goodell and buffoon in the same sentence.

Trends & Stupid Moves from My 2015 Fantasy Football Draft

0

trends notable adrian peterson from 2015 fantasy football draft 2015It finally feels like football season again after my fantasy league held the draft this past weekend. I promised I would call them out by name if they did anything stupid, so without further ado, here are some notable occurrences from the 2015 “Men Fantasizing Over Other Men” League Draft:

Even Iffy Running Backs Flew Early: I took Adrian Peterson with the first overall pick to start the night, one of seven RBs taken in the first round. That’s not overly unusual. Players like Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Eddie Lacy, and Le’Veon Bell often prove to be the workhorses for your team, bringing in points through the air as well as punching in TDs on the ground.

The only surprise in the first round was Latavius Murray. I think Cross intended to draft DeMarco Murray and just screw up really badly. He deserves it for taking Peyton Manning before I could.

Latavius wasn’t the only questionable running back to go early however. By the 6th round, Frank Gore, Ameer Abdullah, Melvin Gordon, and T.J. Yeldon had all found their homes for the season. I’m sure half of these guys will end up just fine for mid-round selections, but the other half (more than likely being Abdullah and Yeldon) will most likely have a hard time generating enough to warrant a relatively early pickup.

Abdullah for one is technically not even the starter right now, at least until Joique Bell (10th round) inevitably gets hurt. Even at that, he could very likely see shared carries and growing pains in his rookie season.

But, Chase seems to love the hype around him. Let’s just hope he doesn’t turn out like 2014 Toby Gerhart did for me. That was the first and last time I will ever draft a Jaguar.

Tom Brady, Sam Bradford, Victor Cruz, and Julius Thomas Dropped Significantly: Apparently the consensus in our league was that Tom Brady would be serving out that four game suspension. Or maybe no one believes he can actually play with properly inflated balls. Either way, Brady fell right into Adam’s lap in the 6th round.

Brady, however, may be riding the bench despite having his suspension overturned, as he is sharing roster space with Sam Bradford, who has been absolutely phenomenal in preseason. Maybe all the talk about his injury-proneness distracted people from the fact that this guy was a Heisman Trophy winner and 1st overall pick. He’ll be just fine…hopefully…maybe…

Injury fear also held back New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz, who didn’t find a team to call his own until the 13th round. Odell Beckham Jr. on the other hand went in the 2nd. Let’s just remember that there is basically no way one defense can guard both guys. I guess potentially missing one or two weeks is worth it to most people.

Julius Thomas was picked up immediately after Cruz, but at that point we were just desperate for tight ends. Thomas, who will actually be missing at least a month now, just has no hope for the future without Manning under center.

You Better Draft a Defense Early: Or maybe you shouldn’t. I can’t imagine that this problem is universal across most fantasy leagues—the top four defenses were gone by the 7th round, with the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, and Houston Texans going in the first three rounds, respectively.

What the hell, Lucas. We knew you weren’t sure what you were doing, but c’mon. You ended up with five defenses, Dustin Hopkins, and Tim Tebow. TIM TEBOW.

He promptly changed his team name to “Defense Wins Championships.”

If he could play all five, maybe I’d be worried.

White Girl Wonderful Syndrome vs Nicki Minaj

white girl wonderful vs nicki minaj images 2015 gossipThere is no doubt that the conversation about race is everywhere in the world in which we live. It is literally getting to the point were we cannot go any place, get on any social media platform or read any piece of news without some kind of racial reference being made.

Growing up I didn’t encounter racism, well not that I can remember. I spent my teen years in Tennessee, a place that you would think is crawling with racial tensions. Those years were spent in a military town with people from all over the world living around me. Even looking back as an adult I still can’t think of one instance that I can now label as a situation in which the color of my skin made someone else act with hatred, indifference or superiority towards me. I’m not saying that there wasn’t racism present, I’m just saying that for me, I didn’t see the world in black and white.

As an adult covering news stories and just living, and this is something that I am very sad to say, I cannot help but see things from the aspect of racial differences and division. The part of race relations that sticks out to me the most is the obliviousness of non-women of color to the struggles of black and brown women.

I call it “white girl wonderful.” When non-women of color don’t understand the privilege that they experience because of the lack of melanin in their skin. They don’t mean to act in ways that communicate to their brown and black sisters that they don’t really get it, but because they don’t realize how keenly aware we are of the truth that white girl wonderful exists, they just go on about their lives… as they should.

The best recent example of this is the “Twitter beef” that happened between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift this summer, which was over until Miley Cyrus gave her opinion (because she was asked) during a New York Times interview about what took place between the two.

“If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement…But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it … What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite.”

Nicki’s response to the former Disney star has now become an infamous moment at this year’s MTV VMA’s. The thing about the whole situation comes down to a lack of understanding by non-women of color when it comes to the things that black women and brown women experience. We are alike on many levels but we are still, on so many more levels, different.

If a black woman expresses her frustration with not being recognized in a certain way for her work, she is not experiencing “angry black woman” syndrome. And for non-women of color to not understand where she is coming from, is a slap in the face. Things are not personal unless a non-woman of color is directly involved in the discrimination.

Miley clearly showed her ignorance in saying what she said about Nicki. The rapper’s consternation definitely comes from an open heart, and that’s why it was so intense. To really get to it, the fact that Miley said what she said showed that SHE herself was not coming with an open heart if we are keeping it real, because a person of love would understand exactly what Nicki was feeling because it was not an attack on an individual woman but more so a jab at a system that continues to put all women in a box. Naturally, there are compartments within that box that further divide.

But the unawareness that non-women of color have to the world around them concerning race prevents them from approaching such situations with that kind of cognition.

There are some non-women of color that I believe are very aware of what they say and how it will affect minorities; Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a prime example of that. Her recent interview in which she asked a black conservative if the Black Lives Matters movement should be labeled as a hate group was laced with malicious intent, despite what she claims. She is white girl wonderful to the max and knows exactly what her racial position affords her.

Please hear me out with this because this is not an attack on white women or meant to be a racially charged piece. I want people to stop getting so damn hype, on both sides, and take what I’m saying into consideration. No one is telling you to alter your life or drastically change how you live. I am asking you to pay attention, realize when it happens and show empathetic support.

Some of my very closest friends are non-women of color and I never want to offend them, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t have these conversations with them in the hopes that they don’t look at me differently.

Women have this amazing ability to tune into an innate gift of care and nurture. Let’s start exercising that more often.

BRING IT! 219 Saturday Night Dancing Dolls Fights

bring it saturday night fights recap 2015 imagesMiss Dianna really brought the drama this week on Bring It, the Dancing Dolls face their biggest challenge yet- dancing on a football field at the Saturday Night Lights Competition. And the excitement is not just due to a change in venue, but because of the catfight that almost erupt between Miss D and McCoy, the captain of their rival team Lowndes County Dance Company (LCDC).

Miss D really ups the ante this time around by bringing a marching band to back up the girls. According to Dianna, DD has to give them something new because LCDC are very rowdy and talk a lot. All of this and more makes it a different kind of competition all together for the girls and for Miss D.

Tina gets advice from the moms on how to deal with Kayla coming home after curfew the night before.  Of course Mimi feels she has the answers and tells her to let it go but make sure she understands that it will not happen again.

Later, Tina brings up how she feels about Kayla leaving for college or doing whatever she wants and Mashumba tells her that she pushes her daughter, Jalean, in the direction that she feels will help give her direction. Tina really doesn’t want to hear what she had to say because she doesn’t like her in her business. Nonetheless, she has a talk with Kayla about college and about her coming home on time, telling her that until she has a plan for what she is going to do, she needs to still follow her rules.

At one of the practices for the competition, the clearly girls grow weary from the hours of nonstop practice. Carmyn and Makalah who are up for the captain spot this week, really feel the heat as Dianna feels that they of all people should not show their tiredness.

As they continue to practice, the weather is not on their side. A thunderstorm inhibits them from finishing practice on the field, which is a huge issue since the girls are already having trouble learning the routine.

The day of competition comes and the heat (literally) is on. Camryn wins the captain spot and is ready to kick it up. Before the girls gs on, Dianna and McCoy have a run in and oh boy, they do not hold back. Miss D goes back to tell DD that they have to really bring it since LCDC think they have the competition in the bag.

At the competition, while waiting for their girls to come out, Mashumba feels the need to “clear the air” about the conversation in which she told Tina to make Kayla go to college. Tina hears her but feels that the air was already cleared. Nonetheless, she remains calm and cordial.

On the dance floor in the first dance category LCDC’s secret weapon is a male twirler, who definitely brings a fire for the team. Then it is time for DD and it is clear that McCoy feels a certain kind of way about the marching band. In particular, he points out how long it takes them to get on the field being that the time limit is seven minutes. He and the twirl leader are heard talking mess about their routine lacking originality. Such haters.

Dianna feels the girls did an awesome job and they did. The marking band behind them really took their routine to the next level.

dianna dancing dolls vs lcdc bring it lifetime 2015It is now time for stand battle and DD goes up against LCDC. This is the first time the teams go against each other ever and you know that it is all on the floor for both. Then something happens, Diana counts LCDC counts and they are over what’s allowed making their stance longer than the rules allow. So Dianna goes to the MC and tells him that there were too many counts. Of course McCoy and Dianna get into it and are in each other faces. He puts his hands al in her face, which sets Dianna off. She starts taking off her shoes as to fight McCoy but they are pulled off of each other into their own corners and the stand battle continues.

So, after their squabble, the judges decide that it is a tie which will be broken by a captain to captain battle. Camryn actually kills it in a way that I have never seen. She hits every single move so hard, even the LCDC’s captain has to applaud.

In the end, DD wins second place in the field show and to Dianna’s dislike, LCDC wins first place. I don’t agree. They were good but DD did tear it up. For the stand battle, DD wins first place. Camryn came all the way through for her team.

In the locker room, Dianna tells the girls that after talking to the judges, they were docked points for going over the time by 30 seconds (their intro was too long), which I am sure makes her feel better about losing.

They are on to the next one, which brings them closer to the much awaited for Summer Slam.

5 Most Underrated Soccer Teams in the Premier League

0

most underrated teams in premier league soccer stoke city 2015Stoke City

The Potters have long been a source of amusement for opposition fans, who have derided them for resorting to long-ball football and more physical aspect of their game, typified by Charlie Adam. However, since the arrival of Mark Hughes a lot has changed at the Britannia Stadium and they have become a team that play a far more attractive version of the game and have done considerably while well doing so as their ninth-place league finish from last season testifies. This season, the arrivals of Xherdan Shaqiri, Ibrahim Affellay and Joselu amongst others are expected to give their game a whole new dimension.

Leicester City

Under Nigel Perason’s management, the Foxes earned promotion to the Premier League for the 2014/15 campaign and gave resilient performances all through the course of their campaign, although they were not rewarded with points and found themselves fighting for survival until the final few games of the season. Pearson’s rallied his forces for a survival mission which his troops succeeded in. The burly manager may have gone since, but under Claudio Ranieri they are still unbeaten in their first four games this season.

Crystal Palace

After gaining promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2012/13 season, the London club survived miraculously following the appointment of Tony Pulis towards the fag end of the season. They appeared headed towards a drop in the subsequent season under Neil Warnock – who had replaced Pulis, but the appointment of Alan Pardew completely turned the tables for the Eagles and they ended up in tenth spot. This summer, they have signed Yohan Cabaye amongst others and will be eyeing a European spot if things go according to plan as they did during their recent visit to Stamford Bridge (a 2-1 win).

Southampton

Watching Southampton play these days it is hard to imagine that they were scrapping in the third division of the English league a mere five years ago. They have grown leaps and bounds since their League One days in the 2010/11 season and this term they played in the qualifying stage of the Europa League. Although their campaign in the second tier of European competition has come to an end, under the management of the irrepressible Dutchman Ronald Koeman another strong league campaign can’t be ruled out.

Swansea City

Since their promotion to the top flight in the 2011/12 season, the Welsh outfit have shown consistent progress under Brendan Rodgers, then Michael Laudrup and now Garry Monk. This summer, they have made some astute purchases, especially that of Andre Ayew, who has shown his class in the four matches they have played so far. The Ghana international has three goals against his name and was remarkable in the Swans’ 2-1 win over Manchester United in their last fixture as he scored one goal and set up Bafetimbi Gomis’ winner to seal all three points for his side. Swansea will surely be eying a spot in Europe this season.
