Hero’s Welcome or Handcuffs? What Will Happen When Snowden Returns?

0

edward snowden heros welcom or handcuffs what will happen 2015 imagesAccording to Sir Oscar Wilde, “Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious.” I only learned that quote when Sean Connery said it in The Rock. Which is true, that men would do what it takes to defend his homeland and maintain security and that may sometimes include some despicable things such as killing and considering the very citizens of the homeland as potential threats, by spying on them.

That is what happened when the USA PATRIOT Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001), enacted shortly after 9/11, allowed the US government, through the National Security Agency to spy on American citizens. Some people, like Edward Snowden, couldn’t take it anymore and decided to blow the whistle on the many surveillance programs being done by the NSA on America’s own citizens. Amidst the backlash and following the expiry of some of the Patriot Act’s provisions, the US government recently passed into law the USA FREEDOM Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-collection and Online Monitoring) on June 15, 2015 and minimizes the NSA’s surveillance on the American citizenry.

The Freedom Act practically vindicates NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, currently a fugitive living in Russia. It basically says that Mr. Snowden was right all along. And without Snowden, the Freedom Act might not even exist and the NSA would still be eating up taxpayers’ money on surveillance equipment and storage media to infringe on the privacy of said taxpayers. It’s been almost two years and the former NSA contractor probably misses home by now. Since he’s actually the good guy, will Edward Snowden be allowed to come back home especially now that he’s been proven right about America’s feelings on privacy? What would happen if he comes back? Will he have a hero’s welcome or will there be a reckoning?

Unfortunately, it’s likely the latter. The government never stated that it was because of Edward Snowden’s “valiant” efforts that Americans have regained a renewed sense of privacy. The government even remains defensive on the validity of its surveillance programs:

“…I have called for reforms that better safeguard the privacy and civil liberties of the American people while ensuring our national security officials retain the tools important to keeping Americans safe. Enactment of the legislation will strengthen civil liberty safeguards and provide greater public confidence in these programs…”

–President Obama

And these statements say that poor Ed’s not yet off the hook:

“The fact is that Mr. Snowden committed very serious crimes…The US government and the Department of Justice believe he should face them…”

–Josh Earnest, White House Spokesman

No good deed goes unpunished. As far as Snowden is concerned, he did the right thing and exposed the NSA’s unconstitutional breaches in Americans’ privacy. But as far as the government is concerned, Snowden is a spy who stole very important and sensitive information and even sought asylum where he’d be put to good use. It doesn’t matter if he chose to distribute that information to the media instead of other countries, much damage had been done. And since Edward’s staying in Putin’s home, eating Putin’s food, he could be sleeping in Putin’s bed, muttering important information in his sleep.

Americans are somewhat divided on Snowden and the NSA. Many, who know the nature of what he did, appreciates getting Big Brother off their back, and saving taxpayer’s money and helping the government focus on more important threats. That the government should be thanking him and dropping espionage charges which include harsh punishments. While there are others who consider him as a traitor because his revelations unfortunately put the country in hot water, that the NSA has been actively spying on diplomats and other governments including its allies; and that the NSA is justified in its actions considering the impact of 9/11, the threat of ISIS and even that of China and that there are threats from within that we should watch out for.

Now could be the best time for Edward Snowden to go home while the Freedom Act is still fresh and the government could not afford to crucify him and make him a martyr. Much of Americans who understand the issue could vouch for him and the best the government could do is grudgingly give him a slap on the wrist. No more computers for you, young man.

Or he could choose to go home later, when the issues have been forgotten amidst other more pressing issues than privacy and Americans will simply refer to him as ‘that guy’. The government will be able to throw the book at him, weighed down by the kitchen sink. But who knows? The next administration could be more lenient, even sympathetic towards the man. Either way, he needs to go home before he lets something slip if he hasn’t already.

Orlando Scandrick Injury Sets Cowboys Back In NFC East

0

dallas cowboys setback from orland scandrick acl injury 2015And another one tears his ACL. Apparently that’s the hottest injury of the 2015 NFL Preseason. This time it was Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick, who tore both the ACL and MCL in his right knee during practice. Definitely not a fun injury.

Scandrick was easily the Cowboys’ top corner in 2014. 55 tackles, one sack, nine deflections, and two interceptions isn’t going to be a simple replacement for Dallas.

Scandrick’s impact with the Cowboys’ defense goes way past his stats, however. Scandrick really shows his talent in slot coverage, and in a division with Odell Beckham Jr., Riley Cooper, and DeSean Jackson, Scandrick was the best available answer for the defense six weeks out of the year.

orlando scandrick acl injury for dallas cowboys 2015 nflWe all saw what OBJ is capable of doing to the Cowboys, so losing their only real weapon against him is probably not a good thing…

Well, Scandrick’s injury will open another door for Morris Claiborne to prove to everyone that he’s not a bust. The 6th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft started three games for Dallas last season (two of those because Scandrick was serving a suspension).

Claiborne’s main issue is staying healthy. He missed 12 games last season and six the year before that with a knee and hamstring injury, respectively. The Cowboys have already opted not to pick up the fifth-year option in Claiborne’s contract, but he claims he can make them change their minds by being a serious contributor this year.

I guess this is the opportunity he needed. The job is his with Scandrick out for the season, but if history is any indicator of the future, the Cowboys should have a solid third option ready.

First-round draft pick Byron Jones will probably be next in line waiting for that shot at playing time. Jones missed about a week with a shoulder injury, but he’s been doing well so far. The Cowboys have been using him as both a safety and cornerback, but without Scandrick out there, Jones may want to start specializing at CB.

In other news, my crazy prediction of a New York Giants NFC East Championship just became slightly less crazy.

Claudia Rankine Missed the Serena Williams Mark

0

meaning of serena williams

Claudia Rankine, in an article titled “The Meaning of Serena Williams,” (NYTimes.com, August 25th/2015), discusses the women’s current World No. 1 tennis player. The article has generated a ton of comments from readers and, like most articles, there are both fans and critics. For my part, in reading the article in it’s entirety I cringed enough times that I thought I better write about the aspects of the article that I don’t really like.

Firstly, early on in the article the author describes a scenario where she’d traveled from Los Angeles to New York to watch Serena Williams compete in the 2013 US Open final. She describes a man who sat near her at the final that was cheering for Victoria Azarenka, the eventual tournament runnerup. Rankine, though it was arguably none of her business, decided to ask the man that was cheering for Vika if he was American. When he affirmed that he was, it raised unwarranted suspicion from her.

To quote the article: ‘’‘We’re at the U.S. Open. Why are you cheering for the player from Belarus?’’’ Rankie asked.

The man responded that he wanted to see a competitive match, which was as good of an explanation as any. But Rankine remained suspicious of the man after he continued to cheer for Vika, and therefore against Serena, even as the match tightened.

In reading the article, it is clear that lurking beneath Rankine’s suspicion seems to be the following reasoning process:

(1) The man said he was cheering for Vika because he wanted to see a close match.
(2) The match is now close.
(3) Since the man is still cheering against Williams he must be racist against black people.

The implicit conclusion comes out of left field and I don’t think you have to take philosophy in university to see what the problem is here. After reading the article, it started to become clear that Rankine, a writer I’d never heard of before, wasn’t much of a sports fan.

There are tons of reasons why someone might not cheer for a compatriot additional to the one that the man gave. One glaring reason has to do with sports betting: if the guy had money on Vika’s underdog odds that alone is a plausible reason that he might have been cheering for her – and maybe he didn’t want to admit it due to gambling stigmas.

People also tend to cheer for underdogs because upsets are a big part of sports drama that can make people feel good. Azarenka, to date, has not won the US Open while Serena had four heading into the 2013 final. Some fans like to see the titles get spread around because parity can make a sport more interesting than dominance.

However, aside from those two reasons, there are plenty of others regarding why someone might not cheer for Serena Williams, reasons that have nothing to do with race. Rankine’s article reveals that she has more than just a little bit of tunnel vision: she sees people not liking Williams because she’s black when there are other reasons that people might plausibly have

Let’s not forget about the following comment that Williams made in 2012:

“…I don’t love tennis today, but I’m here, and I can’t live without it … so I’m still here and I don’t want to go anywhere any time soon,” she claimed. “It’s not that I’ve fallen out of love; I’ve actually never liked sports, and I never understood how I became an athlete. I don’t like working out; I don’t like anything that has to do with working physically.”

Can you see why a tennis fan or sports fan might be put off by that?

Serena is the best at what she does and it all seems like a bit of an accident. In truth, I never thought Serena actually meant what she said but the fact that she said it is still a good reason, in my mind, for a tennis fan not to like the current World No. 1. The comments could be used to discredit the sport.

But then perhaps I am wrong and Serena really doesn’t like tennis. If that is the case then we, those that do like tennis, should not be surprised at all the tournaments that Williams has skipped over the years.

She, like most players who have had long careers, has faced injuries that have lead to missed time on tour but – unlike nearly any other tennis World No. 1 that I can think of – Serena has also faced questions regarding her commitment to the sport. In the 2000s she missed so many Grand Slams even while she enthusiastically participated in other pursuits, like acting and appearing at non-tennis sports venues.

Now I’ll be the first to say that SHE CAN DO WHATEVER SHE WANTS. However I can also understand why a tennis fan might not cheer for her as her commitment to the sport is nowhere near the likes of so many others, including Vika. Rankine seems to think that Williams is entitled to an American fan base, yet in truth sports fans are not always that simple.

Another reason that people might not cheer for Williams has to with how she’s acted at times over the years because she hasn’t always been, let’s say, family friendly.

One infamous episode is mentioned in Rankine’s article where Serena threatened a line judge at the 2009 US Open before earning herself a point penalty on match-point. Williams’ anger may have had merit but loads of players have had questionable calls go against them.

Ivo Karlovic had nearly a dozen foot faults called against him when he threatened tournament-darling Andy Murray at Wimbledon 2012. Through it all, Karlovic still tried to win the match though he stated afterward that the tournament had lost credibility in his mind. Karlovic didn’t threaten to ram his racket down the judge’s throat down match point, an action that would obviously incur a penalty.

Rankine, in her article, calls an outfit of Williams’ “badass.” Now here’s a newsflash for the writer: NOT EVERYONE LIKES BADASSES!

From about the same time as the foot fault fiasco, remember Williams and her t-shirt at Wimbledon 2009? Sitting over top of her cleavage was the phrase “Are you looking at my titles?”, a clever pun that references a slightly different shirt (fill in the blank; four letters, three of which start the same as “titles”: “Are you looking at my ____?”).

That’s not exactly what anyone who is socially conservative would like and, since I don’t always like socially conservative people, I’ll state explicitly that Williams doesn’t necessarily have to worry about what they think.

However it could lose you some fans so let’s not think, as Rankine seemingly does, that an American cheering against Serena is anti-black. Serena, over the years, has been crass at times, she’s missed a lot of events, and – even as the biggest face of women’s tennis – she has stated that she doesn’t love tennis or even like sports.

Go Vika go?

Rankine, in questioning the motives as to why an American might be cheering against Williams, made herself look like a little bit of a witch-hunter. That the man may have been racist is not impossible and there have been genuine racist fans at tennis matches during Serena’s career. But a tennis fan merely cheering against Williams does not a racist make. Rankine should have just left the guy alone and I cringed when she described how she scrutinized him for doing nothing except something incredibly banal as far as sports goes.

I also cringed every time I read a phrase that Rankine used in her article: “black excellence.” Here’s the phrase in context:

“The notable difference between black excellence and white excellence is white excellence is achieved without having to battle racism.”

The phrase kind of reminds me of a term I’ve read before: “white-male science.” In truth, there is no specific “white-male science” as the laws of physics are consistent regardless of the skin color or sex of the person who is calculating them. People that try to subdivide something like science according to race and/or sex are the ones who are being racist or sexist. In the same way I think it’s irresponsible to use a phrase like “black excellence” or “white excellence” when writing.

That Serena has battled through racism in her life is something that I do not doubt. However calling her perseverance “black excellence” only re-categorizes Serena according to her race instead of at least starting to move on. Stating “Serena achieved excellence by persevering to the top of women’s tennis despite facing racism in her life” would have rubbed me far better.

Lastly, I don’t like the insinuation of Rankine’s that Maria Sharapova is considered more marketable because she is white. The topic of beauty is inherently subjective however understanding that there’s still certain conventions to beauty is not. Sharapova, in my opinion, is more marketable largely because the way she looks is closer to the general consensus of what beauty is than the way that Williams looks.

Certainly people will vary in their assessments of who is better looking and that’s just fine. However I don’t think race is what makes Sharapova more marketable. I think that if, for example, Tyra Banks – a breathtaking African American model – was a World No. 1 tennis player she’d be raking in more endorsements than Sharapova. Williams is an attractive woman but she doesn’t have the conventional beauty that Banks and Sharapova both have.

Furthermore, I think the following is true as well:

(1) If Sharapova wore an arrogant and family-unfriendly t-shirt during an internationally televised press conference interview that asked people if they were looking at her ‘titles’ she would be less marketable.

(2) If Sharapova threatened to ram a racket down a line judge’s throat for calling a foot fault she would be less marketable even if the fault was a phantom call.

(3) If Sharapova seemingly maximized the amount of time she missed in 2008/09 when she had her shoulder problem, instead of minimizing it, then she would be less marketable.

(4) If Sharapova claimed that she didn’t love tennis or sports she would be less marketable.

Other tidbits that bothered me with the Rankine article are as follows:

According to Rankine: “A win at this year’s U.S. Open would be (Serena’s) fifth…”.

No, it would be her seventh. I’m not convinced that Rankie has followed Serena’s career that closely.

According to Rankine: “For black people, there is an unspoken script that demands the humble absorption of racist assaults, no matter the scale, because whites need to believe that it’s no big deal.”

You could avoid generalizing by re-writing the statement like this: “For SOME black people….because SOME whites…”.

The 2015 US Open starts on Monday, August 31st. Williams will be the top seed and she’s the tournament favorite according to betting odds (ie. bet365). Vika and Sharapova aren’t far behind.

As an American playing in America’s best tournament Serena is bound to have a lot of home favorites cheering for her in New York. However if a white guy wearing clothing that would suggest that he’s American cheers for a non-American against Williams then please don’t be like Claudia Rankine and start imagining that he’s a good ol’ boy. Mere cheering isn’t enough to base such an opinion on.

He could be a guy with ten bucks on the underdog, he could be a guy who simply cheers for the underdog like many of us do, or he could be a guy cheering against Williams for a number of other reasons. In conclusion, racism obviously exists in society and sports but people should be more careful before they start labeling actions or observed phenomenon as such.

NFL Preseason Week 2 Indepth Recap

0

marcus mariota nfl preseason week 2 indepth recap 2015 imagesLots of NFL Week 2 Preseason indepth action to get to, so let’s get after it Leonard Williams style.

Redskins 21 Lions17

RGIII was absolutely assaulted during this game. Kid had me feeling sorry for him as he got popped on 6 of 8 drop-backs. The Skins said III had a concussion after the game, but were still evaluating him the next day. McCoy and Cousins just look like a better fit for the offense, even considering they were up against many backups.

Matt Stafford had a nice game on a 6 of 8 performance. His backup threw for two touchdowns, but somehow Washington came out on top. This is the preseason so scores are not the main point.

Bills 11 Browns 10

This wasn’t a bad game to sit through even with a low score. It came down to the end as E.J. Manuel tossed a late TD to Andre Davis then connected on a two point conversion to go ahead.

Johnny Manziel tried to scramble his way to a last minute score. He had played a decent game until his last drive when he did a poor job of clock management. Can’t throw to the middle of the field and forget to get out of bounds when seconds matter Johnny.

Falcons 22 Jets 30

Atlanta should be happy with their starters once again. Ryan was Ryan and the defense played fine at the start. The Jets got behind 14-0 before mounting any offense.

The Jets got a big game from their rookie defensive standout Leonard Williams. The kid from USC had 1.5 sacks, five tackles, and a safety.

Panthers 31 Dolphins 30

Hard to figure some of these scores out. Watching the games, you would have a hard time guessing the finals judging by the start. Cam had a dismal game then went reckless in a head first dive to the goal line. Too many chances this guy takes, though I love the grit.

Tannehill played like a big money QB should play, getting his crew ahead 14-0.

A late pick by the Panthers led to them taking the lead for good.

Seahawks 13 Chiefs 14

I almost won a few bucks on this game until I realized we were watching a replay! Hard to keep up with the preseason schedule, as I have mentioned before.

Seattle’s offense looks a mess just like last year. Wilson is doing too much scrambling. He did connect with Seattle’s big tight end, Jimmy Graham for three completions and 39 yards.

Alex Smith finally got a touchdown to a wide out. First time since 2013. He just can’t place the deep ball properly. That’s part of the reason he’s in K.C. anyway.

Ravens 17 Eagles 40

Joe Flacco looked like a third stringer in this game. The Ravens got behind early and only scored in the fourth quarter.

Sam Bradford made the start for Philly and got rocked for his trouble. Also, they need to get him a bigger helmet, like a size 11 1/2.

There was plenty of scoring to go round for the Eagles obviously. DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews got in on it as well as Tebow on the ground. Tebow’s passing left much to be desired in this one.

Colts 11 Bears 23

T.Y. Hilton showed off some of his new-contract-worthy game with two catches for 52 yards.

Jay Cutler made a hardnosed run to the goal line only to have the play called back. Nice way to get the team behind you, but still can’t risk that during an exhibition.

Patriots 26 Saints 24

Jimmy Garoppolo got another workout while Tom Brady was shaky. Garoppolo went 28-33 with an INT and a TD. He will be ready if needed come week one.

New Orleans somehow lost after getting ahead 21-0. Brees had a nice deep throw to go with two TD passes. The old guy still has the touch going into year 15.

Jaguars 12 Giants 22

Anyone else tired of Odell Beckham Jr. being all over the TV? I’ve seen enough, especially after seeing David Tyree’s Super Bowl catch on replay this weekend. You all can sit down with Beckham’s alleged greatest catch ever. He didn’t catch it with the Super Bowl game on the line, with his helmet, while an ax murderer of a DB in Rodney Harrison was hanging on him.

Anyway, Eli looked bad and was 4 for 14 on the night.

Broncos 14 Texans 10

No J.J. Watt makes for a dull night. Peyton had four drives end in four punts. Again, no fun.

Brock Osweiler played well again, slinging the ball around. He had a great deep throw, but did give up a pick six.

The Texans are no closer to choosing a QB1 as Hoyer and Mallett had another similar outing.

Rookie Shane Ray played well for Denver’s defense. The first round pick left the game with a rolled ankle, but did return later.

Raiders 12 Vikings 20

Adrian Peterson still hasn’t played in the preseason. Good plan. He knows how to run fast and blow up tacklers. No pre needed. Season only for AP.

Teddy Bridgewater got his first TD of the preseason while his counterpart David Carr played well also. Carr hit Amari Cooper for 40 yards as this tandem looks to be a threat from the beginning of the 2015 season. Carr has a nice touch on the deep ball and Cooper is just what he needs on the other end. I know it’s early and young receivers need time to develop, but….

Chargers 22 Cardinals 19

Rivers didn’t play in this one as he had to count his money to make sure his finances were in order.

Carson Palmer did start and looked good hitting J.J. Nelson for big gain. He then connected to John Brown for a score.

The Chargers did do a good job of getting to the Cards’ quarterbacks and caused a pick from backup Drew Stanton. The Chargers got the lead on a FG after getting the benefit of a questionable (aka bad) defensive holding call.

Packers 19 Steelers 24

Terrible game for the Packers, even if they had won by 40. They have lost Jordy Nelson for the year with a torn ACL.

The Steelers’ starters looked impressive just like in week one. Roethlisberger got an early TD to Wheaton on his way to a 100 yard passing day.

The Steelers had a tough injury in this one too. Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey went down in the first quarter with a left ankle injury that may need surgery.

Cowboys 6 49ers 23

Colin Kaepernick looked good on his opening drive, but ended up settling for a field goal. The Niners offense generated much more offense than the Cowboys, who barely let their starters on the troublesome turf of Levi Stadium.

NaVorro Bowman made his return to the Niners defense after being out since January 2014. Dude had a terrible knee injury in the NFC Title Game versus Seattle.

San Fran’s novelty act showed out again. The rugby sensation, Jarryd Hayne, had a pair of highlight reel punt returns as well as a 34 yard run that got 49ers fans jacked.

Rams 14 Titans 27

Marcus Mariota had a very good game….let the hype machine start. Talking heads will be talking up the poor guy all week, setting him up for the fall when he has a bad game.

The Titans dominated the first half 20-0 and got great play out of Mariota’s backup up Mettenberger once again. The kid from LSU could end up as trade bait eventually if he keeps up his solid play.

The Rams QB Nick Foles struggled a bit, throwing a terrible pick 6. Foles was 3 of 7 in his short appearance. Malcolm Brown had long touchdown near the end of the game to make the score somewhat respectable.

Bucs 25 Bengals 11

Jameis Winston played a good game to keep pace with fellow rookie Marcus Mariota. Winston had a rushing TD complete with a cool shot from the new pylon camera, which could be dubbed the Concussion Cam by season’s end. Winston handled himself well in the post-game presser, making to sure to give credit to his team. The guy knows he is under a microscope and needs to say all the right things.

The Bengals struggled in this one. Andy Dalton had two INTs, although one was a very catchable ball that was tipped by A.J. Green.

The big injuries put a damper on week two, but an ACL can get ripped in practice too. The preseason is just another form of practice.

Matt Damon’s THE MARTIAN Latest Trailer Images Land

0

matt damon the martian latest trailer images 2015I was really excited after watching the first trailer and marketing ploys that came out earlier in the summer for “The Martian.” After seeing the second trailer for the movie, I will be counting down the days until it hits theaters.

The second trailer features a narrative by star Matt Damon, one that basically explains the premise of the film. Matt stars as astronaut Mark Watney who is marooned on Mars after a storm causes him to be separated from the rest of his crew. At first, NASA, his crew and the rest of the world label him as long gone. However, Mark is able to make contact and establish that he is in fact alive and will be awaiting his rescue.

Unfortunately, his rescue will be a very long, potentially risky process, as NASA must send out another team to come get him. While doing so, Mark must employ his creativity and smarts into making 50-days worth of supplies last the 140 million mile trek that the rescue team is going to have to make to get him.

Although the movie looks very similar to Gravity and Interstellar, from the trailers (especially this one) it is clear that the film its taking a much more comedic perspective on the whole lost-in-space plot. Once again, the trailer utilizes the catch-phrase “I’m going to have to science the s—t out of this,” said by Watney (Damon) in a video log once he realizes how little supplies he has on Mars.

matt damon is the martian images movie 2015The trailer also shows Mark figuring out how to grow plants and such on Mars to try and sustain a food source for himself. Here, he declares himself “the best botanist on this planet,” ironically, as he is the only person on Mars.

This trailer also gives a glimpse of the other drama that is intertwined in The Martian. It is clear the movie isn’t simply about Mark finding a way to survive off of very little. The trailer also shows the characters back at NASA having difficulty trying to find a safe, reasonable way to retrieve Mark. Jessica Chastain, who plays Mark’s mission commander, is shown having to make tough decisions as she determines whether she is willing to put the rest of her crew at risk in order to go back and rescue Mark.

Along with Damon and Chastain, The Martian employs a slew of big Hollywood Names, including Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels and Kate Mara.

Once again, the big studios are releasing a big-budget science fiction movie in the fall. Following suit to 2013’s highly successful Gravity and 2014’s Interstellar, The Martian is looking to be the genre’s net huge blockbuster.

In an interview to Reuter, star Matt Damon described the movie as being a “love letter to science.” Adding that, “We’re kind of on the cusp of being able to do everything that happens in the movie. At the end of the day it’s a really entertaining story.”

Not only is the cast creating hype, the film is directed by Ridley Scott who has made a name for himself in the movie world, directing such sci-fi films as Blade Runner and Alien. In addition, the film is adapted from the 2012 best-selling novel of the same name by Andy Weir, which already gained a following on its own.

So, while it looks very similar to recent sci-fi hits, The Martian is taking a much more fun, comedic route into space travel and has brought in a cast of stars to do so.

You can catch them all in The Martian in theatres on October 2, 2015.

Editors Note:

Ricki will be attending college this fall, but she will be contributing pretty regularly, and we here at Movie TV Tech Geeks are so happy not to lose her. We’re more than happy to work around her schedule as she’s very worth it as a very valuable member of our writing staff.

BALLERS 110 Recap: Dwayne Johnson Shows Fans His Assets

ballers dwayne johnson flamingos 2015
Guess what. “Ballers,”Joe is a bit of a hot head. Spencer got to see the office destruction left by his buddy Joe on his way out of the company. It was nasty scene and the workers are just lucky he didn’t take out that frustration on them.

Spencer is concerned, but forgets his anger once he learns he is now promoted. He even has a sassy new assistant. She’s pretty damn good at her job too as we see later on.

The keys to the kingdom from Mr. Anderson are hard to resist, but Spencer is going to do right by Joe, isn’t he?

While Spencer is jacked about his new position and the extra $5 million being pumped into his sports division, he gets some bad news from Jason. Vernon can’t be bothered to sign his new offer from Dallas. If this player can’t see what a huge mistake that is, I have no further use for the man. Fictional character or not.

Well we finally meet a character that is a bigger ass than Ricky…not worse than Reg though. Let’s be clear. Ricky’s dad shows up on the scene acting like he doesn’t want anything from Ricky. That is a lie, I’m guessing. The old man actually wants credit for giving Ricky the hatred needed to make it in the NFL! A boy named Sue type situation.

It turns out Joe freaked the hell out on the office furnishings because Anderson fired him. He still wants Spencer to join him in a new business. Smartly Spence recognizes they don’t have enough money to launch such a venture. Joe says he has enough to put down then they can get the rest via a loan.

Even though Charles thought he sucked it up in his drill time with the Dolphins GM, he did enough to get an offer. The big man is headed back to the pros. No more peddling automobiles and lounging in the A/C.

I don’t care for the toothpick sucking dad of Ricky. I did like him telling his son to “Stop being a baby.” That was good advice for the punk, who by the way tried to do right in this episode. Still no Bella though.

Ricky had a nice line for his pops too with a “Bitch ass coward” blast. I don’t recall a human ever lighting up a cigarette with a damn toothpick already in their mouth. Ricky’s dad is damn oddity.

Spencer’s new assistant earns her keep right away when she keeps Anderson from walking in on Spencer and Tracy Legette. They were going over some papers on his desk…really going over them! Many Dwayne Rock Johnson fans will be delighted to see the man showing off his assets for more than a split second, and you can see he’s called the ‘rock’ for  a reason! Since some advertisers aren’t crazy about seeing any form of nudity on our pages, you can just click this link here to see the Rock in action.
ballers flamingos ricki miami dolphins camel entrance 2015When the Dolphins players arrive at the facility it is a freaking circus. And Ricky Jerret is the carnival barker at large. Kid comes in riding a camel! That’s a step above what T.O. or Chad Johnson ever did…as far as we know anyway.

Spencer had to break Joe’s heart on the new biz idea. That didn’t mean that this duo was done. Spencer gave an epic speech to Anderson, comparing the boss, Spencer, and Joe to the Patriots’ leadership. The boss man caved and is going to allow Joe back in the company.

Spencer is a good guy that is always looking out for his friends. Not a selfish bone in his body.

Ricky continued his good guy episode, giving up the   #18 jersey to Alonzo. Jerret had already paid for the damn thing too! Maybe the baby is growing up, at least for this week.

Charles Greane put the hammer down on a rookie during practice. I thought the big man might struggle some, but he got after that ass from the jump. Wind sprints may be a different ordeal.
dwayne johnson bulge ballers flamingos recap 2015 imagesThe end of the episode was nice, even with Reggie back on the scene. The lil idgit did act very contrite to Spencer so we’ll see if that continues next season, if Reg’s character is even back on the show.

Vernon got his contract signed and was presented with an $18 million dollar check right before dinner. How would that taste? A single paycheck that is more than most people can make in 16 lifetimes!

I can’t claim to be excited about Ballers season two that is on tap for 2016. Season one just wasn’t solid on a consistent basis. I will give it another shot though. Hard to give up on The Rock. The show runners may get it right eventually. Time will tell, but I will jump ship next year by mid-season if the quality isn’t there on a weekly basis.

LOVE & HIP HOP ATLANTA Reunion: No Umbrellas Needed With This Shade

love hip hop atlanta cast reunion 2015Oh boy. It’s the “” Reunion and…mmmmmm…. It is something to see.

The host, Niki Parker, directs her first question to Stevie J and Joseline who finally comment on their relationship. From what they tell us on the reunion show, they aren’t together but they aren’t apart. They are both thinking about their pockets so take that for what’s it’s worth.

Their storyline is also the first one to be review and of course Mimi is mentioned. They end up going back and forth about why Mimi met with Joseline in the first place at the beginning of show (she says because her baby daddy said she wanted to apologize) and things get heated between the two women. Mimi says her only problem with Joseline is that she is not a nice person. Which, I agree. She is on some other level shit and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Then there is Joc and his whole screwed up baby mommas/ sugar momma storyline. Nicki references asks him about have eight children and then directs a question to Scrappy (who is in the audience), asking him how he has not had more kids with all the women he has messed with. Erica Dixon quickly chimes in and says because they’ve had abortions, prompting Bambi to tell her to “shut up bitch” which prompts an even bigger argument between that little love triangle there.

Niki brings it back quickly to Joc asking Sina if she and her baby daddy still get it on to which she calmly says that they have never stopped seeing each other. These women are way too ready to fight especially Khadiyah. Joc is painted as a man that just can’t stop dealing with other women, including messy Karlie. Joseline even busts him out about tried to sleep with Karlie at the Love and Hip Hop wedding back in May. Niki asks Sina if she and Joc have slept together since he and Kay Dee have gone exclusive and she says yes, making Khadiyah visibly upset. That must be some REALLY good beef cak for these chicks to keep compromising their dignity like they do.

Next up are Rasheeda and Kirk and their twisted situation. Kirk admits to being wrong about getting the Buckhead “office” and not giving his wife her store. Along with their going back and forth about money, they talk about Ashley Nicole who is also on stage with them. Niki asks her why she didn’t just tell Rasheeda she is gay and she said that since Kirk doesn’t always tell his wife stuff. Well we all know that’s the case.

joseline-nikko-lhhatl-s4-reunion recap 2015 imagesThen there is Nikko and Stevie J and they almost have a jailhouse brawl right on stage. Stevie checks him and while doing so, Joseline reads the hell out of Nikko from the audience and he can’t say anything. Even Deb interjects how wrong he was to bring Mimi’s daughter into the picture and he tells her it’s none of her business. Margo expresses her disgust that people keep calling Nikko gay, in particular because she is gay.

This is also the time for Jessica Dime to have a little bit of time to shine. Her clip consists of all the drama that was her storyline. Joseline actually stays calm while talking to her and they hash out the differences that had on the camera. Of course, Jessica says that she only went there with Joseline because of Karlie telling her tht Joseline dissed her. For some reason, Stevie and Joseline’s sex life comes up and this bitch actually says that she likes the kitty cat more than the “beefcake,” which does not sit well with her husband. At the end of their segment, all three, Joseline, Jessica and Stevie hug it out, which leads me to believe there was never any real beef between them in the first place. It was all to put Jessica Dime on.

One of the interesting things that they incorporated in the reunion show this time around is something called clap-back where the cast gets a chance to respond at things that were said during the “after party” shows throughout the season. So in one of the many this season, Joseline insinuated that she and Mimi have had sex, which Mimi gets a chance to deny. Right when Joseline is about to drop the truth bomb on us, Love and Hip Hop Atlanta Reunion show part one is over.

We have to wait until next week to see what the Puerto Rican Princess has to say but you know it’s going to be shocking, crazy and filled with drama.

Joy Behar’s Back With Her VIEW & A Lucrative Retirement Plan

0

joy behar back on the view abc 2015Once again, ABC’s problem child “The View” is doing a major shake-up which we’ve been following since January. Rather than trying to jam the table with new faces to see which ones resonate with the audience, the producers wised up and are bringing back the loveable cantankerous Joy Behar. This should help bring back some of the old audience who don’t even recognize the show anymore after the mess they made of the past two seasons, but Behar was literally offered a deal she couldn’t refuse.

The returning co-host is back for at least one year, and it’s costing ABC a very pretty penny, but “at this point, they’re willing to try anything,” a source on the set said. “They’ve thrown everything against the wall to see what would stick, and they realized that bringing back Joy could be a smart decision. She wasn’t interested at first,” the source continued, “but when a certain amount of money is being thrown at you, you just can’t say no.”

Hopefully this can help stave off “The View’s” plummeting ratings free fall and keep it on it’s own another year before ABC folds it into “Good Morning America.”

“Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in,” the comedian said in a statement. “Plus, [my husband] Steve was getting tired of applauding every time I gave my opinion. But I’m happy to be back home. And I’m looking forward to sticking my two cents into the hot topics, especially now that Hillary and the Donald are in the spotlight.”

Cameron Bure, 39, has appeared on the show several times as a guest. An actress currently filming a “Full House” spin-off, she’s also an author and the mother of three.

“I am thrilled to be joining ‘The View’ as a regular co-host this fall,” she said. “I am honored to be a new addition to such a strong group of bright and opinionated women, and I look forward to sharing this exciting journey with viewers new and old.”

Meanwhile, Faris, 39, is a familiar face to ABC viewers, as she’s been the co-anchor of the weekend of “Good Morning America” since last year and an ABC News correspondent since 2012.

“I’m humbled and excited to have not one, but two dream jobs — ‘Good Morning America’ and ‘The View’,” said the mother of three. “What I love about the ‘The View’ is that no topic is off the table and every viewer can feel like they have a voice on the show. I can’t wait to connect with the audience in a new way as I take a seat alongside this exceptional group of women.”

The new season of “The View” premieres Sept. 8. It will be live five days a week and will feature appearances by regular contributors including former co-host Sherri Shepherd, Padma Lakshmi, Stacy London, Ana Navarro and Molly Sims.

“Starting in September we begin another exciting chapter of ‘The View’ as we welcome an enormously accomplished group of new voices to the table, all led by our moderator Whoopi Goldberg,” said Bill Wolff, executive producer. “We’re looking forward to even more pop culture, more politics, more humor and more of the hot topics our audience loves.”

DirecTV Gambles On “Mississippi Grind”

0

mississippi grind direct tv with ryan reynolds 2015 imagesIt’s been a while since we’ve been treated to a good, old-fashioned gambling film. 21 was a perfectly entertaining movie and there’s been plenty of movies shot in and around casinos. However, it hasn’t been since Rounders that we’ve seen a classic American gambling movie. Thankfully, we no longer have to be yanked around by rumors of a Rounders sequel and can instead satisfy ourselves with the latest film from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Mississippi Grind.

When you consider that Ed Norton and Matt Damon’s poker classic came out 17 years ago, you’ll have to forgive us for taking whatever we can get. We’re getting close to The Color of Money time in between sequels if the thing ever does happen. If it’s been a while since you played a few hands, we don’t blame you and this guide on how to play poker is actually really handy before going into any gambling movie. These movies always tend to move at a breakneck pace and the dialogue usually moves even faster. The moment they start talking about any hand beyond a full house, I immediately get lost, making a refresher pretty great as it allows you to focus on the story rather than the lingo.

This flick follows a young gambler (played by Ryan Reynolds) trying to turn things around when he teams up with another fellow gambler who’s down on his luck (Emmy nominee Ben Mendelsohn). The role of the grizzled screw-up with a losing streak works well for Mendelsohn and it reminds us a lot of his turn as the wayward prodigal son, Danny Rayburn, in the Netflix original series, Bloodlines. Hijinks and adventure ensue as the pair tear through every single casino, pool hall, and racetrack they can find in search of a bigger score. The film also stars Sienna Miller and Analeigh Tipton plus a supporting role by Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave and Annabelle). For fans of hers, it’s worth noting that Woodard reportedly will join Marvel’s upcoming Netflix drama, Luke Cage.

One great thing for the poker players reading this is that you won’t even have to get up from the table to watch this movie. The film made its debut on DirectTV On Demand Aug. 13 as a part of a partnership between the satellite provider and distributor A24 Films. Mississippi Grind is arguably the strongest feature that has come out as part of a deal that has included Life After Beth, with Aubrey Plaza, and Dark Places, starring Charlize Theron.

Early response to the film has been mostly positive with critics praising the movie’s vintage, road-flick feel and strong acting from Mendelsohn and Reynolds. Reynolds has seen a significant rise in his Hollywood cache recently following the debut of the two trailers for Marvel’s upcoming Deadpool movie in which the Canadian actor will play the title role. Mississippi Grind hits theaters on Sept. 25, 2015.

How Is the World Adjusting To Windows 10?

0

world adjusting to windows 10 2015 imagesWindows 10 is almost a month in. As promised, Microsoft released its new operating system last July 29 and as promised, free upgrades became available for existing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. Like all things new, and all things free, the fans and the curious took the bait, clicked that Get Windows 10 icon and downloaded the software. Within twenty-four hours, Microsoft registered more than 14 million downloads of Windows 10. Not bad, considering the flak they had with Windows 8. It’s been weeks since the release so like a much-hyped movie, a couple of weeks should be enough to know whether it’s a blockbuster or a bomb.

What are the numbers this far in? Is Windows 10 a hit another or miss? As of now, according to StatCounter, Windows 10 has a market share of almost five percent. The number doesn’t seem much but that is a lot of computers. It’s actually impressive considering it’s only been about three weeks. The free upgrade and Microsoft’s Insider program surely helped with that number. According to StatCounter, much of that percentage comes from users moving up from Windows 8.1, followed by Windows 8 users and lastly from Windows 7 respectively. It suggests users don’t really like Windows 8 but at this point, it could still be anything.

Windows 8 installations seem to be the priority for the free upgrade. The Get Windows 10 icon appears almost immediately a few updates after unpacking a new Windows 8.1 system. There are already plenty of Windows 7 systems ripe for upgrade but many users are still hesitant. Their installations are already several years old with well-established apps and usage habits versus many Windows 8 users who are eager to get back their Start Menu. Getting a free upgrade doesn’t seem much of an incentive compared to changing a way of life. Many gamers for instance are hesitant that Windows 10 would not run or destabilize their existing games. But the free upgrade offer is still up for eleven months and users might just want to hold off as long as they can before making use of the free upgrade. Imagine the spike of upgrades come July next year.

Right now, yours truly is using the Windows 10 RTM version which I acquired as an insider but I’ll have to admit, I like Windows 8.1 better. 8.1 was a bit faster when it comes to booting and more responsive. It was the OS my 3-year old ASUS laptop was built for and I was hoping Windows 8’s performance would carry over. Getting your cake for free is one thing but eating it is another matter. But Microsoft quickly needs to correct some mistakes and evolve at the same time so now we have Windows 10. But honestly, the new Start Menu everyone’s been clamoring for doesn’t impress me much. I like the idea of mixing together the old and the new but the old leaves something to be desired. I like Cortana though, as well as the new Mail app. Channeling my Yahoo mail to it and getting alerted through the Action Center is convenient. The action center itself is a convenient way to change settings much like a phone. Social gamers would love Candy Crush Saga, if they’re aware of it, and kids and some adults would certainly like Minecraft.

The upgrades, impressive as the starting numbers were have somewhat tapered off which could be due to various reports of bugs, compatibility, performance and privacy issues as well as worries about Microsoft’s software as a service model. Some people are worried that Windows 10 could render some of their peripherals useless. Some people don’t like the idea of forced updates in home versions. Many people don’t like the idea of their computers being used as seeders to propagate Windows 10 as well, and would instead wait until Microsoft changes things. It could also be a wait-and-see attitude of many users waiting for those right updates that would optimize Windows 10 in one go. Just like the wait-for-service-pack-1 attitude in previous versions.

With that said, Windows 10 adoption might take a while. Microsoft expects this, which is why they gave users a full year to upgrade for free. They themselves know that they could make Windows 10 better and complete on all their promises of a better OS within that year and that the service 1 pack attitude isn’t easily shaken off. Not to mention that they themselves gave users schedules for upgrading. A month could be too early to say if Windows 10 is a hit or not, even with the free upgrade. Windows 7 did take its time to endear itself to Windows XP users. But if by 2016, the combination of free Windows 10 migrations, purchases and OEM installations doesn’t match the percentage Windows 7 currently enjoys, that’s the time Microsoft should worry.
