National League Week 20 Recap: Mets Continue To Impress

national league mlb week 20 mets continue impressing 2015 imagesThe National League continues to deliver excitement night in and night out as the calendar month prepares to flip to September. This week a few of the hottest teams include the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates and even the San Diego Padres. Each of these team’s recent streaks have positioned each of these teams for a postseason run in October.

As we start to recap the National League our eyes have been on those Mets who continue to impress. This includes a stretch of winning the past seven games as well as eight of there past ten. The winning started in Colorado last Friday as the Rockies took three straight games before heading to Philadelphia.

The good news the Phillies had cooled off after there hot stretch after the All-Star break. The Mets managed to sweep the Phillies in four straight games including breaking out the lumber in the series. Other good news for the Mets was the return of All-Star third baseman David Wright who homered in his first at bat after returning from the disabled list.

While the Mets might be the hottest team in the National League, the Pirates have picked up seven wins over there past ten games. Meanwhile the Padres have managed to move within single diigits of the Los Angeles Dodgers after winning seven of there past ten games.

Not all the action has been positive over the past week including watching the Los Angeles Dodgers get swept while winning only five of there last ten games. Then you have teams like the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds who managed to just pick up just one win over there past ten games.

That being said here is a quick recap of the entire National League as we all prepare for some September baseball.

National League East: As we have been preaching for weeks this continues to be one of those divisions that we couldn’t have predicted before the season. All anyone talked about this offseason was the dream team pitching rotation of the Washington Nationals. The thing we didn’t hear about was how good the New York Mets pitching staff was going to be.

This is exactly how the Mets have built their six and a half game lead in the National League East. The team has been led by Jacob deGrom at the top of the rotation. deGrom leads the team in wins with 12, earned run average at 2.29 and strikeouts with 161 over his first 24 starts. Other key arms have been Matt Harvey who is returning from tommy john surgery and Jonathon Niese.

While the Mets hold on to the top spot, the Nationals have pitched well but the team has been inconsistent at the plate. This has showed up in the statistics as they have managed to only outscore there opponents by 25 despite scoring 531 runs through there first 125 games.

The one question every baseball fan wants to know is if this Nationals team can make a run in the division to earn a spot to play in October.

National League Central: The hype will continue to come in for the National League Central as the top three teams continue to dominate. The three teams latest stretch run have positioned them into the top three records in the National League. Along with having the top three records these three teams would all make the post season if the season ended today.

The top team in the division is the St. Louis Cardinals who currently hold the top record in baseball at 81-45. The Cardinals recent stretch of wins includes winning four straight games heading into Thursday. This includes winning three straight against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the fourth game against the Padres. The Cardinals entered Thursday with a chance to sweep the Diamondbacks.

Flipping over from the Cardinals we elected to look at a Pittsburgh Pirates team that has won seven of there past ten games. For the Pirates they continue to take care of business starting back on August 14th as the team opened up with a win over the Mets before finishing off the sweep that Sunday. Since that series the Pirates have picked up series wins over the Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants and Miami Marlins.

Then you have the Chicago Cubs who continue to be a contender with the strong pitching efforts from Jake Arrieta as well as a lineup that continues to develop into one of the tops in all of baseball. That includes the Cubs top rookie Kris Bryant who picked up another key long ball this week as he helped the team walk off in the bottom of the ninth against the Cleveland Indians.

Could the 2015 MLB Season finish up with a World Series title to the NL Central?

National League West: The up and downs continue to keep the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West. This time the Dodgers struggles picking up just five wins over their last ten games didn’t cost them in the standings as the Giants have managed to win just four of there last ten games.

Starting with the Dodgers, the past ten days have been a big time roller coaster ride starting with the club winning three of four against the Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers followed that up losing back to back games against the Oakland A’s before losing three straight to the Houston Astros. After the struggles the Dodgers have bounced back winning three straight over the Reds.

For the Giants the same struggles have occurred over the past week losing two of three to the Cardinals before losing three of four to the Pirates. Luckily for the fans the team was able to turn it around the past two days taking two of three against a very hot Cubs team.

Then you have the Padres who started last weekend with two of three wins over the Rockies. Then the Padres bounced back sweeping the Braves before taking two of three over the Cardinals. After the hot stretch the Padres couldn’t manage to build on it losing two of three to the Nationals.

These next few weeks should be interesting as the Dodgers and Giants continue to battle it out for the top spot in the National League West.

American League Week 20 Recap: Kansas City Royals’ Double Digit Lead

kansas city royals american league mlb winners week 20 2015The long 162 Major League Baseball season continues to roll along as teams fight for playoff position around the American League. For us this has been one of the craziest seasons we have seen in a very long time as we have only seen one team really dominate there respective division.

That team has been the Kansas City Royals who have the only double digit lead in the American League. Currently the Royals hold a 12.5 game lead over the Minnesota Twins. The same Twins we have seen turn around there season of late picking up seven wins over there last ten games while improving there record to 65-61 on the season.

Along with the ups and downs for all 15 teams around the American League we continue to see some players put together big seasons. One of those players who have been hot has been the Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion.

Entering the weekend, Encarnacion is hitting .264 for the season with 26 home runs and eight runs batted in. His latest stretch includes picking up four doubles, five home runs and 15 runs batted in over his last ten games. This stretch has helped him increase his season batting average to .264 after siting at .255 for weeks.

These are just a few of the big headlines from around the American League over the past week. Here is a quick recap of each of the three American League Divisions before the calendar month flips to September.

American League East: One of those divisions that has caused this to be one of the craziest seasons has been the American League East. This division continues to play out like a roller coaster ride at your Cedar Point. The latest stretch has seen the Toronto Blue Jays play themselves to the top of the division while the New York Yankees have taken a step back into second place in the division.

This flip flop in the standings come after the Blue Jays picked up seven wins over there last ten games while the Yankees have managed to pick up just five wins in the same stretch. This stretch has the Blue Jays sitting at 71-56 while the Yankees trail them by 1.5 games at 69-57.

As we look at the Blue Jays recent success the team managed to split a two game series with the Philadelphia Phillies before picking up a three game sweep over the Los Angeles Angels. The winning continued on Tuesday and Wednesday picking up opening wins against a hot Texas Rangers team before losing the final game on Thursday.

Meanwhile the Yankees struggled to continue building on their big sweep of the Minnesota Twins last week. The Yankees dropped three of four to the Cleveland Indians over the weekend before losing two of three to the first place Houston Astros.

For us we will be keeping an eye on the top of the American League East but the question we keep asking ourselves is whether or not the Baltimore Orioles can play themselves back into the picture after losing eight of there last ten games?

American League Central: This may be the one division in baseball that we aren’t interested in watching down the stretch. Much of that is due to the fact that the Kansas City Royals have ran out to a commanding double digit lead while the Detroit Tigers continue to struggle falling to fourth place in the division.

Now that doesn’t mean this division won’t play any good ball down the stretch as we seen the Royals and Twins both pick up seven wins over their last ten. Then you have the Cleveland Indians who picked up six wins over there past ten games including taking three of four against the Yankees last week.

For the Twins and Royals their latest success has come against an American League East team that is struggling. The Twins picked up a four game sweep over the Orioles before taking two of three against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals on the other hand took two of four against the Boston Red Sox before taking three of four against the Orioles.

In the end this division could see two teams play themselves into the post season.

American League West: The American League West is much like the East as we continue to see a roller coaster ride. That good news is one team has been able to jump in the front car and that team is the Houston Astros who has pulled out to five game lead over the Texas Rangers while the Los Angeles Angels dropped to 5.5 games behind.

The Astros success has come against some of the better teams in all of baseball including the a three game sweep over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team continued the success to open this week after losing game one 1-0 to the Yankees at home taking the next two games by outscoring them 21 to 3 over that stretch.

Following the Astros are the red hot Rangers who used a 7-3 record to play themselves into second place in the American League West. Good news for the Rangers comes to town on Friday as the team welcomes a Orioles team that has struggled. Prior to this weekend’s series, the Rangers lost two of three to the first place Blue Jays.

Then you have an Angels team that clawed themselves into first place entering the All-Star break but can’t seem to put it together during the second half of the 2015 MLB Season. The latest stretch includes being swept by the Blue Jays before bouncing back taking two of three against the Tigers.

Will this be the year the Astros take home the American League West crown?

jameis winston vs marcus mariota nfl 2015 images“I thought he had a typical first day,” said Lovie Smith on 1st overall pick Jameis Winston’s first day with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “We saw a lot of good things today.”

Sure, Winston is a very talented player, a BCS National Champion, and the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner; but unfortunately the name ‘Jameis Winston’ draws to mind a lot more than his accomplishments on the field. His career has been shrouded in scandal and misbehavior since he arrived at Florida State, with the rape allegation and crab legs incident being the most widely known.

Marcus Mariota had a much different experience at Oregon. The 2014 Heisman winner was seen as a golden boy compared to Winston, which only increased his popularity. It didn’t help him much in the draft though, as he still fell to No. 2 behind his counterpart.

Winston had to deal with a lot, but he made it through; and now he is the new face of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise. Amazing. Apparently head coach Lovie Smith saw something that the rest of America was missing—a young man who, although he has made more than his fair share of mistakes, shows the maturity and leadership that it takes to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Since the draft, Mariota has flown somewhat under the radar, at least in comparison to Winston. Maybe Tennessee isn’t the most covered team in the NFL, but either way that’s going to start changing soon as they march towards a Week 1 matchup against each other.

It was probably in part because of Winston’s history off the field, but he was covered pretty heavily during camp—and boy did it help him improve his image.

“Love that dude,” said rookie wide receiver Kenny Bell. He’s just infectious. His personality—he’s actually my roommate for camp—you want to be around him. He’s a great, positive dude. He lifts you up when you’ve made a bad play. He’s just positive. He’s an infectious personality that guys want to be around.”

“Humble. He’s a great leader,” said running back Dominique Brown. “When we first came to the complex, Jameis was outside, greeting all the rookies, himself just a rookie, just telling us ‘Get better. We can’t go 2-14 again.’”

Mariota has been a leader too, of course. I guess people have just grown to expect that from him and so it was never viewed as news.

Well, on the field everything is documented, critiqued, and criticized. So far, they’ve managed to hold their own as rookies.

Week 1 was a bit rough on both guys, as Mariota committed two turnovers which gave the Atlanta Falcons 10 easy points. Winston on the other hand completed less than half of his passes, including one interception against the Minnesota Vikings.

They improved. They bounced back. Not everyone can throw a touchdown on their first NFL pass.

Mariota through two games is now throwing at 75 percent with 153 yards. Not the best stats, but he also isn’t playing the whole games.

Winston right now is sitting on an average 53 percent for 221 yards, one INT, and one fumble which the Bucs recovered. Three sacks don’t help.

The only weird thing about these two is that they haven’t been running much. Winston was always a better pocket passer in my opinion, but Mariota could really open up plays and games with his legs. Moving forward, this will probably be a topic of discussion, especially if Mariota struggles come the regular season. If the Titans are restricting him too much from his play style, they’d be better off seeing what they can get for him from Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Week 1 should definitely show us a lot, but it is already clear these guys have both come a long way and have a long way to go as pros.

PARANORMAL WITNESS 401 Recap: The Motel

paranormal witness 401 windrift motel 2015After usually covering the dark and gritty shows like “Game of Thrones” and “True Detective,” I’m going to the dark side with “Paranormal Witness,” a true story show about ghosts and such that I’d never watched before. This week’s episode was entitled “The Motel.” The time period of the story looks to be about the early 2000s or late 1990s.

This tale begins when the Johnson family moved into the estate. One half was an old abandoned motel (called the Windrift Motel). The other half was a house in which the family decided they would live in. Soon after moving in, the family realizes that some renovations need to be done, but with that comes a hard task. See, it was almost like the house was rejecting the new decorations. For example, the wallpaper and paint would start to peel right off the walls. The wife even stated in the shows interview “It’s like it was frozen in time.”

A property that blocks your renovations does not make for a cozy home, and won’t be on a smiley happy Home Depot ad anytime soon.

The family did not think much of the occurrence, but things went downhill as the daughter tells in her interview. She says growing up she didn’t have many friends to play with. So one day she was sitting in her room, just playing with her dolls and says that she “saw someone.” The ghost (oh, by the way, the ghost’s name is Lisa) and the daughter became very good friends. They would always play together and at night the daughter would set up midnight snacks… FOR TWO!

Soon after that, the wife had some strange occurrences herself.  She would hear knocking or banging at the door…. but no one would be there when she went to check. She would tell her husband, but he did not want to hear anything about it. He thought she was just going psycho. The go-to analysis for most married men when the wife has upsetting news.

She dreamt that it was 2:45 AM and that she was being woken up by the footsteps of someone in her house. So she then sees something, follows it to the basement (bad move), and there in front of her stands the figure of a woman. WHAT?! The woman is trying to give her a message, writing “CK” in red paint on the wall.

Later the next day when she awakens, she goes downstairs to the basement to see the same message written in red paint on the wall. Now, that is just creepy all in its own. But that is just the start of it.  One night during bath time, she FINDS THE BODY OF THE BLONDE LADY IN HER DREAM, IN THE TUB WITH HER DAUGHTER! She quickly grabs her daughter out of the tub, rushes her into the bedroom, and says to her “I’m going to drain the water.” When she returns, there’s no body of course. More ammo for her hubby to have her committed if he had the inclination.

What do you do in that situation? Try telling your husband that won’t believe you? Well, that was the only option, but he was still not convinced.

Days pass after this incident and their daughter was asleep but says she has a terrible nightmare. She describes this nightmare as seeing a “dark shadow man” who was evil. She said that he would try to kill her, but she could not scream, she could not run. She could not do anything.  Pretty common dream, so most of us can relate to that powerless feeling.

That very same night, after the wife had put her daughter in bed, she goes into the bathroom to get herself ready for bed. Well, that was NOT about to happen. She steps into her bathroom and looks in the mirror. She said, “It was like I was looking into another time period.” There in the tub she could see the blonde lady from the dream taking a bath, when all of a sudden, her husband comes in. They talk for a minute but soon after, talking leads to fighting.  I guess the husband had had enough of her because he decided to murder his own wife by trying to drown her in the tub. Counseling would have been a better next step.

The daughter hears the noise and comes in, only to be hit by her own dad with a shovel.  The wife is still looking in the mirror only to see the man completely change into the shadow man from her daughter’s dream. Hate it when that happens!

Meanwhile, her actual husband was just getting home from work. He walks up to the door to enter the home, but says that he could hear the footsteps of someone else. He looks around for a minute but right about the time that he turns around… he sees her. He sees the blonde lady and finally believes his wife.

After he basically said that she was not crazy and they needed to figure out what was going on so their family would no longer be hurt, they decided to set up a meeting with a lady that used to work there. She told them the stories of the old motel, how it was “the place to hang out,” but then her tone of voice changed. She said that the motel changed, that people were being killed there. So naturally, the wife asked about the ghost she had seen and the lady responds with “Yes, her name was Caroline Kercy.”

She claimed that Caroline had OD’d on pills and that’s how she drowned. But when Mrs. Johnson said she saw her being murdered by a man, the lady did not seem shocked. She gave all the information she could and they parted ways.

That night, the strangest thing of all happened. The “dark shadow man” showed himself in Mr. Johnson. This demon possessed his body, making him try to kill his own wife, again, while screaming “I CAN KILL YOU, I CAN KILL YOU!” Then I guess by magic or the grace of God, he snapped out of it. She knew that wasn’t her husband trying to harm her. That could not be the nature of her husband. Uh, it happened twice lady!

Guys, don’t try using demonic possession as a defense if you are contemplating whacking your better half.

A few days later Mrs. Johnson and her daughter were shopping at the local market when more freakiness ensued. She ran into the man that killed Caroline. She could recognize him even though he had obviously aged a lot. She confronted him about the incident and he did not deny that he did it. He simply stepped away.

But from then on, they say the house has been fine, that the energy is lighter and they can now enjoy their family time. Me, I would have hopped on the first thing smoking heading away from Windrift Motel.

You can believe what you want about these paranormal stories. Who’s to say what really goes on with these people. Maybe they went temporarily insane. Maybe they are simply liars. Maybe something happened that is just inexplicable. Either way, the witnesses in this series make for entertaining TV.

Therefore, when a student does get a chance to take some time off to and are able to watch a movie, they should be sure to pick one that they are guaranteed to enjoy. Being in college myself, freshman year is when you are indoctrinated with some of the greatest movies that you not have even heard of…especially if you’re from a smallish town. Plus I’ve met some of best friends here in college watching these films in the rec area together.

So, I have compiled my top 10 movies that I think every college student should see.

After calling in sick for classes, Ferris ends up “borrowing” a Ferrari and having a fun-filled day in the streets of Chicago with his best friend and girl friend. However, Ferris’ high school principal is determined to catch Ferris during his “day off.

If the studying and work associated with post-secondary is getting to you, this movie is definitely a light, fun film that can temporarily alleviate some of the stresses of college.

So many movies try at the same type of comedy this film possesses and fails, but Paul Rudd and Jason Segel are the perfect pairing to actually succeed in this hilarious bro-mance oriented movie.

This movie is about Peter Glaven, a soon-to-be groom, who realizes he doesn’t have any close friends to ask to his best man. In order to fix this, Peter goes on a series of “mad-dates,” and eventually stumbles upon Sydney Fife. Peter is a relatively reserved guy, while Sydney is definitely free spirited, which makes for a hilarious dynamic between the two. However, Sydney and Peter’s relationship ends up threatening Peter’s relationship with his future wife.

This movie will definitely make you laugh-out loud so it’s perfect to watch with your school friends on a Friday night.

This film has so many comedians, that it doesn’t even matter how ridiculous the plot line is, its hilarious. It is about actor James Franco, who is throwing a star-studded party, including Rihanna, Emma Watson, Michael Cera, among many other prominent names. However, things go awry when an apocalypse erupts and ends up trapping a select few in Franco’s house. The people trapped inside have to somehow work together to try and survive the “end of the world.”

With social media being so relevant in the world of college, I feel like I am obliged to recommend that students watch The Social Network. The movie is based on the true story of Harvard undergrad Mark Zuckerberg, whose idea for a social networking site blossoms into what we know today as Facebook. However, it was not a smooth ride up as Zuckerberg faced conflict both in his personal and business life.

Okay, so this one might be more directed towards the female crowds, however it has become such a classic that I think that everyone should watch it at least once. Odds are you will encounter a fellow student quoting it at least once during your undergrad.

The movie stars Lindsay Lohan, who grew up being home schooled by her parents who were researchers in Africa. However, they decide to move to Illinois and Cady is enrolled into public high school for the first time in her life. Here, she encounters the cruel world that comes from the hierarchy amongst the students and eventually becomes part of “The Plastics,” a shallow group of girls who are deemed high school royalty.

Bridesmaids is another movie that I didn’t expect much from, but couldn’t stop laughing when I saw it. It is definitely a good pick-me-up when you’re tired from hitting the books.

The movie is about Annie, a single woman who can’t seem to get her own life in order. Things seem even worse when she finds out her lifelong best friend Lillian is engaged and wants Annie to be her maid of honor. Annie, who is broke, jobless and unlucky with love, attempts to suck up her own problems and lead Lillian and the bridesmaids down an unorthodox road to the wedding.

While most of the movies on my list are comedies, there are a few classics that I feel are a must-see for college students (if they haven’t already seen them). One of these is Fight Club. The movie is definitely a mind-boggling story, which often gets referenced in contemporary media (you’ve probably heard about the first rule of fight club, right?)

The movie is about a depressed man who suffers from insomnia. He meets a soap salesman named Tyler and eventually ends up living in his slummy house. Out of boredom, the two men begin an underground club with strict rules, where men can fight out their frustrations stemming from their mundane lives.

Be warned: Things are definitely not all what it seems with this movie.

This is the movie that made Jonah Hill a household name. Perfect for college students, as it is about two best friends who are nearing high school graduation and the inevitable future of having to split up and attend different post-secondary schools. However, before all of this, the two friends decide they are going to try and get in with the popular crowd by supplying the booze for their party. However, their plans are interrupted when two bored policeman intervene.

This movie is probably one of my favorite comedies of all time, as it doesn’t resort to big gestures to be comedic. It’s has a clever-wit that stems from it being loosely based on Seth Rogen’s experiences growing up.

Hopefully you by the time you are in college you have already watched this trilogy several times, but if you haven’t this is definitely a must. Lord of the Rings is the film adaptation of the book series of the same name by J.R.R. Tolkien. It tells the story of Frodo, a Hobbit living in the mystical world of the Middle Earth, who finds himself in possession of the “One Ring that rules them all.” Frodo must make a journey, with the help of wizards, dwarves, elves, and many other creatures, to destroy the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom where the ring was forged. Unfortunately the Middle Earth is filled with plenty of evils that will do whatever it takes to stop Frodo and his group from fulfilling their quest.

big brother 1726 john going home recap 2015John knows his time is pretty much up on tonight’s episode of “Big Brother,” Austin said he didn’t put Vanessa up for eviction because she might have to go up for eviction if the right person wins power of veto. Vanessa thanked Austin for not putting her up for eviction. Austin said he was telling Vanessa what he knew she wanted to hear.

Austin called everyone for the veto competition. The players randomly selected were Vanessa, Meg and Julia. Steve hugged Vanessa for making it into the competition and said he wanted to rebuild his relationship with her.  Julia said she was concerned that Austin doesn’t know who he is targeting this week.

Zingbot came into the house to entertain everyone. James said Zingbot is jealous of him for sleeping next to Meg. Steve admitted to Zingbot that he’s nice to his mother. Zingbot joked that John’s back is hairy. Zingobot then announced the start of the veto competition. Zingbot told Liz that Austin has a girlfriend at home. Austin said the woman was his ex.

This one is about identifying Zingbots that look like house guests already evicted this season. Whoever identifies them all the fastest gets power of veto for the week. Steve said he felt good that he could beat Julia’s time. Steve said he had to win even though he’s been told he’s safe this week but he finished it in a longer amount of time than Julia. Steve said he would still be OK this week as long as everyone keeps to what they’ve said they’d do. Austin couldn’t beat Julia’s time either. Austin said if he and the twins can make it through a few more rounds they are home free. Vanessa said she had to win power of veto to ensure her own safety. Vanessa beat Julia’s time. John said in the back of his mind he felt like he’d been lied to all week and he needed to win this veto to stay in the game. He also said he messed up the competition and felt like an idiot. Meg came close to beating Vanessa’s time but she didn’t, so Vanessa won power of veto for the week. John said he was in trouble and he needed to regroup from here but that it looked like he was going to jury. Austin said he hoped he could work with Vanessa.

John told Vanessa he is alone in this game and he felt like everyone wanted to keep Steve instead of him. John said he’s dead in the water and he might have to make a deal with the devil. So he told Vanessa if she wanted to work with him he had no one else. Vanessa said she and Austin had to discuss all potential options since she has power of veto this week. Vanessa told Austin James is a dumbass and  Austin shouldn’t like him. Austin said he is working with Meg and James now and he can’t turn against them. He also said if he got either of them evicted and they came back in the jury house they would target him. Vanessa said she felt like she was being targeted. John said his back is up against the wall and its not looking good. He also said he is trying to get Vanessa to use the power of veto on him. Vanessa said she was looking out for Steve in this game but now she knows he took her for a fool. |Vanessa told Steve to leave her alone but then she talked to him privately. Steve admitted last week there was an alliance to try and get Vanessa out of the game. Vanessa got mad and stormed out of the room.

decoding novak djokovic tennis 2015 imagesNovak Djokovic, with the draw release for the 2015 US Open looming, enters Flushing Meadows perhaps not cold but certainly not as sizzling hot as we are used to seeing him. The World No. 1, although he won Wimbledon for the third time in his career earlier this summer, has faltered in three of his last four tournament outings. Priced just a little longer than even with numerous sportsbooks (ie. Ladbrokes have him at +125 or 5/4) there’s good reason to be skeptical of the Serbinator with the final Grand Slam of the year to start on Monday.

To give Djokovic his fair shake, he’s 56-5 on the 2015 season with two Grand Slams bagged and four other tour titles. Such is his command on tour at the moment that neither Andy Murray nor Roger Federer can hope to come close to Djokovic’s ranking points total, regardless of the results at Flushing Meadows. If, for example, Djokovic totally air-balled the tournament and went out in the first round then the World No. 1 ranking would still not be up for grabs in New York. In fact, Djokovic, who went out last season in the semifinals, might plausibly build on his lead in the rankings this year.

To further give Djokovic his due, it also has to be stated that he has not been losing to bad players recently. Federer beat Djokovic in Cincinnati, Murray took the Serb out of the Montreal final, and Stan Wawrinka defeated Djokovic back at the French. There’s not a weak player in that trio of losses however I, for one, am still quite skeptical of Djokovic’s betting odds heading into Flushing Meadows. After all, the best odds I could find were those already cited: +125 with Ladbrokes. They have to be called pretty short based on the fact that Djokovic, at this time of the year, is not closing tournaments out like he was earlier this season.

Djokovic’s recent losses are one matter but additional to them are a couple of eyebrow-raising matches lately that did not end in losses for the Serb.

Djokovic almost lost to Ernests Gulbis in Montreal, a player that is just 8-18 on the season. Interestingly enough it’s not like the Latvian, a pretty good player, is playing the hot tennis that saw him into the French Open semifinals in 2014. After Montreal, for example, Gulbis headed west and fell in the first round of the Vancouver challenger to unheralded Ilya Marchenko. Furthermore, Djokovic almost lost to Alexandr Dolgopolov, a player that got bounced out of the Winston-Salem draw this week in the preliminary round.

That Djokovic isn’t play his sharpest right now is pretty clear and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Djokovic didn’t play good during the North American summer hard court season in 2014, he has never won the Cincinnati title, and the US Open, through the course of his career, has been more about him losing big matches than winning them.

Federer, in his prime, waxed Djokovic in Flushing Meadows year after year. Murray’s only title in New York was at Djokovic’s expense in the final and Nadal’s two titles were both at the Serb’s expense as well. For some reason Djokovic just doesn’t do his best at this time of year and he appears well over-rated heading into the 2015 US Open.

When it comes to betting lines I can’t help but reminisce about last season. Last year Marin Cilic won the event at odds of 150 to 1 (those were bet365’s odds on him in early July 2014), odds that I took and later wished I would have took for more than just an $8 sprinkle. Cilic, if someone looked carefully at him last year, was doing well in five-set matches heading in the US Open.

This year, I don’t see many valuable betting lines in the US Open market for the men’s draw. The players in the 150 to 1 range are John Isner (Stan James), Richard Gasquet (bet365), and Kevin Anderson (bet365). Gasquet is the only interesting player there following his Wimbledon semifinal run yet the Frenchman lacks the distinguished acing ability that can get you through the tough moments and games in Flushing Meadows.

But with Djokovic’s odds so short, there’s definitely at least one player who is under-rated for the US Open. That player, in my view, is Murray, the champion from Montreal.

Last year Murray wasn’t at his absolute best but he appears to be there right now. It’s true that he has a recent loss to Fed but the match was played under conditions favorable to the Swiss Maestro. To explain, Federer entered Cincinnati on a whopping five week’s rest while Murray entered the tournament on no rest (he played in Montreal immediately prior). That gave Fed the edge he needed when he and Murray met in the Cincy semis last week.

Murray used to be about 4.5 to 1 for the US Open however his odds have been shortening. Nonetheless, I think +350 is still reasonable (Stan James) even ahead of the release of the draw. A good one for Murray would see him share a semi with Federer, a player that I think will continue to have trouble in the late rounds of Grand Slams against much younger opponents.

But at this point, avoid Djokovic’s odds like the plague as he is just not sharp enough right now. The losses to Federer and Murray are one matter but I think the elephant in the room is that +125 on a one-time champion, a player who has lost so many big matches in Flushing Meadows, have to be judged as way too short by anyone serious about their tennis punting.

Wednesday wasn’t exactly the best day for the women-beaters of the National Football League.

Former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald was indicted on a count of rape of an intoxicated female, current 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks was hit with a sexual battery charge, and then former New Orleans Saints and current Washington Redskins sack artist Junior Galette blew out his Achilles.

Let’s start with the first guy. McDonald, who was picked up by the Chicago Bears earlier this year and then released after more domestic violence and a child endangerment charge in May. McDonald wasn’t indicted on anything from the events in May, but he still faces up to eight years in prison.

Talk about losing your best playing years. Even though McDonald will more than likely get off with a slap on the wrist and maybe a fine or community service, his NFL days are even more likely over.

The league always talks about wanted to come down harder on domestic violence, so they may as well make McDonald’s early retirement official. And permanent.

Brooks on the other hand will probably be just fine. He’s still on the Niners, and although they are aware of the situation, barring any punishment the league may hand out, Brooks should be good to go come Week 1. If not, it’ll be just another setback on a long list of issues that have plagued the 49ers’ defense this offseason.

Galette got off easier than the other two in terms of legal issues, but he got his just desserts after everything he did and all the drama he caused after being cut from the Saints.

Obviously I’m not saying I’m glad he’s hurt. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. I’m just saying the universe has a strange way of making everything work out in the end.

To add injury to the injury that was added to the original insult, Galette also loses $332,000 this season because the injury occurred before Week 1.

Sucks to suck, guys.

The hump day grind is real and there are a lot of things going on right now in the world around us. Virginia people were shocked when a reporter from a local news station was shot during a live newscast, and Easy E’s son blames Suge Knight for his father’s death.

 No one gets up in the morning and heads out to work thinking, “Hmmmm, hope no one shoots up the job today.” More so, no one should worry about these kinds of things either. The unedited video is just below, but it’s shocking so you’re warned.

In a story that is still developing, two members of TV station WDBJ, Alison Parker and Adam Ward, were killed this morning during a live broadcast segment. The suspect is 41 year old “disgruntled” former employee Vester Lee Flanagan who reported under the name Bryce Williams.

Details are still forth coming but from what we know his was upset about racial comments made to him by Parker (according to Flanagan’s 23 page manifesto) and at the fact that Ward complained about him to HR after working with him one time.

As of this writing, the latest report is the shooter has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after taking police on a high-speed chase.

It is clear that he’s been planning this for quite some time as not only did he write his manifesto, he filmed the killing with a go pro, posted to social media (he actually posted the video) among other things.


usa postpones mr robot after virginia shootingUSA has postponed the season finale of the brilliant “Mr Robot” because there are similarities between the episode and the tragic events that occurred on Wednesday.

“The previously filmed season finale of Mr. Robot contains a graphic scene similar in nature to today’s tragic events in Virginia. Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight’s episode. Our thoughts go out to all those affected during this difficult time,” the network said in a statement.

The scene in question from the finale of the critical hit depicts an individual sustaining a fatal gunshot wound during a TV interview – similar to the way reporter Alison Parker was killed on live TV while conducting an interview for WDBJ, the CBS affiliate in Roanoke, Virginia. Photographer Adam Ward and Vicki Gardner, the individual who was being interviewed by Parker, were also shot. Ward died from his injuries, while Gardner is in stable condition after undergoing surgery. The gunman, former WDBJ employee Vester Lee Flanagan II, shot himself after the attack and died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.

Instead, USA Network will repeat the season’s penultimate episode and air the finale Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 10 p.m.

This is hardly the first time TV shows have had to delay episodes due to violent content. The season three finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which featured a high school shooting, did not air until two months after it’s scheduled airdate because of the April 1999 Columbine massacre.

There is no doubt with all of the controversy surrounding the mega hit movie Straight Outta Compton, some of the other controversies that have been raging for years have resurfaced. One of the biggest conspiracy theories we have been hearing since the death of Easy E twenty years ago is that he was killed by rival record exec Suge Knight. Now Eazy’s son is saying it’s true.

Yung Eazy, an aspiring rapper, has voiced his thoughts about what really happened to his father, who died of AIDS in 1995.

“I’ve been known my pops was killed. His death never added up two what ppl have always said maybe they think we’re idiots blind to the truth idk…”

He goes on further to reference a part in the movie where Eazy didn’t start showing any signs of sickness until after an altercation with Suge Knight. The real cause of Eazy’s death is further brought into question thanks to a clip from a 2003 Jimmy Kimmel Live! interview with Suge Knight were he alludes to injecting the rapper with AIDs as a way to get rid of someone without getting in trouble.

By this time, we have all heard about the reading club that was kicked off a Napa Valley Wine Train tour. As the story goes, the Sistahs on the Reading Edge group were escorted by police off of the train after other riders and employees of the tour company accused them of being too loud, unruly and confrontational during the excursion, which of course, included wine and food.

Eleven women were escorted through the entire size car train, a humiliating experience and met by police at the St. Helena top on the tour. Now, even with the CEO offering a second more sincere sounding apology Tuesday, Sistahs’ member Lisa Renee Johnson feels it’s not enough. And honestly, I don’t blame them.

“He started out apologizing and said he truly wanted to hear our story, but it feels like the spin machine is in play… “He talked about how his staff had been traumatized by the last few days, made to look like something that they’re not. And I told him, ‘Well, that’s exactly what you did to us — painted us as something that we’re not, by saying those things about us on your social media.”

Johnson goes on to say that since the apology didn’t come until after they hired Sam Singer, a San Francisco crisis communications specialist, she and the other members of Sistah’s are unmoved.

This is a very interesting story and one that serves as an example of what companies are willing to risk when it seems that they are targeting a certain group of people. Yes the CEO took full responsibility saying that they did not handle the situation correctly, but. Only after painting these women on their social media pages as ghetto, rude and mean. Napa Valley Wine Train was petty, displayed a total lack of customer service and more than that, a gross lac of customer care. And as for the offer give be the CEO for a free tour for up to 50 people, Johnson said,

“We have no interest in going on the Wine Train to ‘be as loud as we want to be,’ because that was never our intention.”

An apology is nice, but in situations like this, it takes some more than a free ride to make it better.

CATFISH 411: Tiana James & Trez

catfish 411 tiana james with baby daddy friend recap 2015After a two-month break, “Catfish: The TV” show has returned with the 11th episode of their 4th season, which is actually the 50th episode of the series.

This episode revolves around Tiana and James. Definitely deserving of the 50th episode placement, this episode brings twists and turns that even sent twitter-verse into frenzy when it initially aired.

Catfish fan, Twitter post:

Tiana, a 21-year-old girl from North Carolina, reaches out to Nev and Max. She tells them of James, who is a 24-year-old, who also lives in North Carolina. She goes on to tell them that they met over 3 years ago on Myspace (that site is still running?!). When they began talking Tiana lived in Washington and even though they live in the same state now, they have never interacted outside of texting and talking on the phone (of course, James’ camera was “jacked” every time Tiana tried to video-chat with him).

When she told James that she was thinking of moving to North Carolina, James expressed excitement and even talked about marriage with her. However, Tiana has now been there for 5 months and every time she tries to set up an in-person get together James never shows.

Next step, Nev and Max skype with Tiana and find out she has a 3-year-old daughter named Journi. However, because James “doesn’t like kids,” Tiana has not told James about Journi, and planned on doing so when they finally met in person.

With James not wanting to show his face and Tiana hiding her 3-year-old daughter, Nev and Max predict this meet-up will be a “train wreck,” and it seems as though they are right.

The Catfish crew makes their way to Charlotte, North Carolina to meet with Tiana.

Tiana tells Nev and Max that she has made plans with James numerous times, and even when he tells her he will be there, he never shows up. When questioned why she puts up with it, Tiana expresses her emotional attachment to him and even shares a loving voicemail James had left her apologizing for “neglecting her.”

Now for Nev and Max to start snooping…

They first reverse-lookup the pictures James has sent Tiana of “him.” Immediately links pop up that indicate the pictures weren’t of James, but of a YouTube rapper who goes by the name “Klassified” or “Tipsy Twist.” The guy in the pictures has videos of him talking (which means he has a full functioning webcam), therefore, they figure they can get Tiana to listen to them and see if the videos match James’ voice.

After further snooping, through Facebook they figure out that “Tipsy Twist’s” real name is Gregory Johnson, which doesn’t mat the “James Sloan” name that Tiana knows.

They also find someone they think is the real “James Sloan,” who is a 50-something-year-old white mechanic (which James told Tiana he was). And just as Max says, this guy is literally who you would picture when you would think of a “catfish” luring in a young woman.

They meet up with Tiana and her friend, Aisha. They go through their snooping results and determine that the guy in the YouTube videos that match the pictures Tiana has of James does not match the voice that Tiana heard over the phone. They show the pictures of “James Sloan,” and as everything begins to match up except what he looks like, Tiana is “pissed.”

Now for the real fireworks show…

While driving up to the car shop, Aisha recognizes the place and explains that the place is owned by her “baby daddy’s cousin, Ricky G.”

Immediately, Aisha flips out as Trez walks out, who is Aisha’s “baby daddy.” Completely confused (probably not as much as Nev and Max are at this moment), Tiana begins questioning Aisha, thinking she was in on it the whole time. She feels there is no way that James could have been Aisha’s “baby daddy,” without her knowing.

Aisha storms off to the car upset that the man her best friend has been professing her love for the past 3 years, wound up to be her ex, whom she has a 7-year-old son with.

Meanwhile, Trez explains he set up the fake account because he liked Tiana but didn’t want the “mess” that would come with Tiana being best friends with Aisha (his ex).

The next day, Nev and Max find out that Aisha and Tiana are not talking. However, Tiana is still interested in hearing what Trez has to say about the whole mess he has caused.

Trez, surprised, explains he obviously doesn’t want to get invested into any more children, as he already has “around 8, biologically and non-biologically.”

He apologizes to Tiana, even getting her to laugh, but Tiana is rightfully reluctant when it comes to forgiving all his lies. They decide to “take it one day at a time.”

Two months later, Nev and Max find out that Tiana never met up with Trez after that, considering the lies that filled their relationship. In addition, Aisha and Tiana have not talked since the whole debacle, because apparently Tiana believes somehow Aisha was behind the whole thing.

Definitely, one of the craziest, complex “catfish” the team has encountered to date.

SENSE 109 Recap: Death Doesn’t Let You Say Goodbye

sense8 109 death doesnt let you wolfgang images 2015No surprises came with the ninth episode of “Sense8 Death Doesn’t Let You Say Goodbye.” The episode yet again is filled with the characters’ personal stories and falls short of any grand continuation of the plot that connects them together.

The episode begins with Riley connecting with an older generation “sensate,”Yursa, who is from an older “cluster” of connected strangers. She helps Riley understand the history of the Biologic Preservation Organization (BPO). Yrsa reveals that she had removed Riley from the hospital after she was born after she showed the development associated with the sensate connection.

Before Yrsa leaves, she warns that Riley must be careful of the BPO agents. She tells Riley that there are ways that they are able to sense and track down her and the others in her “cluster.” She warns that if she is ever caught she will be hospitalized and lobotomized, as the BPO has done to so many.

Simultaneously, Will is once again being “visited” by Jonas, who is also trying to warn Will of the dangers of the BPO. Soon into this “visit,” Will links up with Riley who is still with Yrsa. Although Will cannot see Yrsa and Riley cannot see Jonas.

his leads to a cheesy scene, where both Jonas and Yrsa tell of the loving connection that can spawn between two sensates, as Will and Riley gaze into each other’s eyes. However, once Yrsa figures out that Will is with Jonas, she tells Riley that she cannot trust Jonas. She says that Jonas and Angelica worked for the BPO and they give birth to clusters in order to help the BPO hunt down more sensates.

It seems Jonas may not be the beacon of hope that he presented himself to be. This could mean trouble for Will and all those connected to him.

Meanwhile, Lito heads to the Diego Rivera Museum, where he and Hernando had shared their first date. He sits and remembers the joy he felt being with Hernando, which leads him to realize that is his true self. The act he has been putting on for Hollywood has been him denying who he really is.

During this, Lito is “visited” by Nomi. At first, their conversation is a bunch of fluff about the museum, but then Nomi starts asking questions as she shares the emotions Lito does and is aware that he has a boyfriend. Lito goes on to tell Nomi about his first date with Hernando. Adding at the end, that he might have lost it all because of the limitations of his career.

sense8 lito broken up 109 hernando death 2015Nomi connects with Lito’s story and goes on to tell of her childhood. She reveals that as a young boy she felt uncomfortable in her own skin. She tells of how she hated showering with the other boys and that there was an incident where the group of boys held her under scalding hot water. It was then that she decided to stop pretending and allow herself to be who she really is.

Lito and Nomi connect over these experiences. It seems that right now Lito is going through much of what Nomi had to face as a child.

Following this scene, we are then shown a “visit” between Riley and Capheus. Here, Capheus tries to comfort a noticeably upset Riley. She hesitantly tells Capheus about her late husband and baby who had died before she decided to leave Iceland. Capheus connects with her sorrow and decides to tell Riley about his younger sister, which his mother decided to a group of nuns due to a lack of food and milk.

This episode was filled with scenes that connected the strangers together, not merely through their ability to share emotions, but also through their ability to emphasize and be there for each other. They are able to look past their different races, cultures, and so on, in order to help each other through their unique struggles and pain.

Towards the end of the episode, we see Lito back at his Hollywood apartment. He is visibly distressed as he is unable to reach Hernando. He resorts to placing a gun in his mouth and pulling the trigger, only to find that it is a prop gun. He is obviously remorseful of his actions, and maybe this twist of fate will allow him to reconnect with the one he loves, Hernando.

Again, this made Sense8 feel much more like a drama than anything else. There really wasn’t any sci-fi element in this episode, other than talks of some historical occurrences that happened within the BPO. This episode was heavy in telling the personal backgrounds of the characters and the dramatic challenges they are facing.

Well, Sense8, you officially have three episodes left to catch up on a series worth of higher-paced action.
