Atlanta Falcons Week 1 Indepth NFL Recap

0

matt ryan atlanta falcons week 1 recap nflFalcons 26    Eagles 24

Game Summary:

The Atlanta Falcons looked like world beaters at times, then faded to shades of the past two years. The bottom line is that they got the win at home. A loss to open up the year in their own building would have set a bad tone going forward, especially in Dan Quinn’s debut.

Matt Ryan looked sharp to open the game and was totally in sync with Julio Jones. Ryan then made a bad throw in the end zone that ended up being picked by the Eagles.

Julio got one of his two first half touchdowns to put the Birds up 10-0. He added another score before the half that made it 20-3 with the home team in control.

The third quarter saw that lead slip away as Matt Ryan had another interception, this time to Walter Thurmond. The Eagles scored twice in the third to make it a game, with DeMarco Murray running in a TD and catching another.

In the fourth quarter the Falcons relied on kicker Matt Bryant to keep Philly at bay. He hit two key FGs while the Eagles managed a touchdown to take the lead. Bryant’s last FG put the Falcons back in front to stay.

It did take a missed FG by Philly late and a tipped pass that was intercepted by Atlanta’s Ricardo Allen to preserve the win for the Birds. Not the prettiest finish for Atlanta, but we will take the 1-0 start.

3 Things:

  • Matt Bryant isn’t a 4.3 stud running back or a deep threat at receiver, but this kicker has been instrumental in the wins that Atlanta has tallied in the past few years. He is as reliable as any kicker in the game.
  • Julio Jones was dominant in this game. But his numbers would have been even better had the referees not called the Falcons for so many “blocking before the pass” penalties. That is a rare call that Chip Kelly must have tipped off the refs about prior to the game. We’ll see if that happens in week two.
  • Atlanta’s defense didn’t scare the rest of the NFL with this performance, but they did put pressure on Bradford. No sacks is fine as long as they are at least threatening the opposing QB consistently.

Lowlight of Game:

Matt Ryan can not throw a pick in the end zone. Sure Kiko Alonso made one hell of a play, but Ryan is a top tier QB that has to put the ball out of reach of even the freakiest athletes.

Pleasant surprise: I don’t know if Philadelphia’s run defense is going to be in the top half of the NFL in 2015, but Tevin Coleman had a nice game against the Eagles. The rookie ended up with 80 yards on 20 carries.

Devonta Freeman just doesn’t impress me. He averaged just 1.8 yards on 10 carries. That many carries is plenty to show something, but Freeman once again disappointed.

Julio Watch: The guy got off to a tremendous start for 2015. Ryan has to clean up his picks starting next week so Atlanta gets all the offensive plays possible to feature Jones. Julio had three more first down catches that were called back due to some questionable calls. Jones ended the game with 9 catches for 141 yards and two TDs.

Hopefully no other commentators refer to Julio as “Hammerin.” ESPN needs a bright intern to help Gruden with better nicknames if he must gloss guys in-game.

Tweets of the Game:

Tevin Coleman did have a nice game and the Falcons will need a steady running back. Can’t throw it 50 times a game.

Julio’s well deserved award.

Dan Quinn’s thoughts on the Eagles game.

Drone Laws

0

drone laws to kick in 2015 droningRemember the good old days when kids asked their parents for a set of baseball cards, a top, a bag of marbles and a kite? Nowadays, kids will ask for a box of Pokemon cards, a Beyblade, a set of Bakugan or Zoobles and instead of a kite, a remote controlled helicopter or better yet, a drone. Right now, the coolest outdoor toy to have are drones. Ever since the invention of the first mini-copter, drones have started taking over park and lawn airspaces. The development of small powerful motors and ever decreasing price has made drones popular. There are even drones for underwater use. They are truly incredible toys, perhaps even better than video games as players actually get to control physical objects instead of sprites on a screen. And what players love most aside from control is an audience, either awed or annoyed. Drones now come in various forms from the simple mini-copter, to quad-copters, to Star Trek starship lookalikes to actual utility drones that can observe activity in their vicinity, and even carry a payload. Because drones can be used for other purposes other than buzzing over things, some laws have to be made. Once these laws are in place, will drones remain as popular?

Drones are gaining popularity as toys for both young and old. They, have come from being simple kite alternatives to actual extensions of their users that can be used to view, observe and unfortunately spy on others. Amazon is actually in the process of researching product delivery through drones. Drones will soon deliver products right at people’s doorsteps. Used in the latter applications, drones are basically intrusive. Flying a drone over a neighbor’s lawn is already a cause of concern for some, especially flying one over a neighbor’s lawn with a camera attached. As an extension of the owner, it can be considered trespassing. Many a drone have been shot down for such a cause. Most of the time, seeing a drone, let alone a kite in one’s airspace triggers a response to investigate, in other words, it’s bothersome. It’s basically the same thing when an unidentified aircraft enters an airport airspace. And it’s a bigger problem when a drone actually enters airport airspace and disrupts air traffic.

drone laws attack 2015 techThe popularity of drones, and the potential problems they cause or have already caused has necessitated the development of local laws and ordinances. Flying a drone over a neighbor’s lawn, especially ones equipped with audio and video is considered trespassing and the neighbor has every right to shoot it down. But like the internet, drones lie between the categories of plaything and utility. Many drone owners disagree on laws imposed by some cities. Drones can be considered model aircraft and are subject to the same laws as flying model aircraft. Flying a drone in a supposedly wide open sky gives the owner a certain sense of freedom and telling owners that they can’t do this and that, sucks the fun out of owning one.

But as with the internet, the idea of fun is subjective. Some like cat videos, others like porn. With drones, owners can capture their own adventures biking or rock climbing, or peep through Jennifer Lawrence’s window while she’s undressing from a hundred yards away. With improvements in camera technology, the drone might as well be a fly on the wall. Another problem with drones (aside from those used by the military), is that they have the potential to be used as weapons or spy equipment. There was this news where a man was hurt (or was he decapitated) when he made a mistake in landing his gas-powered remote-controlled helicopter. Though not exactly a drone but a careless pilot could land a drone on someone’s head, hit a small child or someone’s pet. A drone could also be intentionally used to drop a deadly package on someone’s home or head. A more recent news is about a drone that crashed in the White House lawn. It could have been worse if the drone had some C4 or was aimed at the president’s head. What’s actually surprising is the lack of surface to air technology around the white house itself to intercept anything unscheduled coming from the air.

The larger the drone, the more dangerous it can be. High-end drones which have a long range can also be a danger to air traffic as they can be hit by low flying aircraft. Drones are a serious concern for celebrities as they can be used by paparazzi to eavesdrop within their residences. And because privacy and security from terrorism are such buzzwords, it can’t be helped that government rules have to be made. The Federal Aviation Administration has already made some proposals such as:

  • Daylight-only operations and operators should consider weather conditions
  • No careless or reckless operations. Operators should keep away from airports and other restricted airspace.
  • Maximum airspeed of 100 mph. Any faster and they can be used as missiles.
  • Maximum altitude of 500 feet above ground level. Any higher and they can disrupt air traffic
  • Must not fly over people except the operators

The aforementioned are general rules that cover all drones. For large utility drones weighing 55 pounds or less, the FAA proposes that:

  • Users must be at least 17 years old
  • Pass an aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center
  • Pass a recurrent aeronautical knowledge test every 24 months
  • Obtain an unmanned aircraft operator certificate with a small UAS rating
  • Conduct a pre-flight inspection, to include specific aircraft and control station systems checks, to ensure the small UAS is safe for operation
  • Report an accident to the FAA within 10 days of any operation that results in injury or property damage
  • Make available to the FAA, upon request, the small UAS for inspection or testing, and any associated documents/records required to be kept under the proposed rule

The rules mentioned are practically similar to getting driving or pilot licenses which might as well be as 55-pound drones are technically unmanned aircraft that have the potential to cause harm or damage to property if not properly handled. What will be the future of drones when the government gets these laws in place?

Believe it or not, a set of rules by the government as long as they’re clear and not too restrictive simplifies things. Drone owners no longer need to guess or wonder whether or not they’re flying at the right place or even doing the right thing. Given the above sets of laws, drone manufacturers now have a set of parameters they can follow and make drones for both consumer and business use. If a consumer drone can’t fly over 500 feet or fly at speeds of 100mph, it saves the owner any worries about breaking any laws. That’s freedom in itself. All drone owners need to do is just to stay away from airports, celebrity mansions and the lawn of the local curmudgeon. Don’t carry any clocks or explosives. Get your drone license along with your driver’s license and everything should be okay.

Fantasy Football Week 2 Start Em Sit Em: Bishop Sankey & Jordan Cameron

fantasy football week 2 start em sit em 2015 nfl'Please tell me y’all actually set your lineups Thursday. I asked really nicely.

Well, I may have been a little premature. So for those of you who rely solely on me for fantasy advice (I’m so sorry), here’s some extra help setting those lineups for Week 2:

Put him in coach!—Bishop Sankey, RB Tenessee Titans: Sankey had a fantastic Week 1 agains the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 74 rushing yards, 12 additional receiving, and two total touchdowns. Sankey also tied Kendall Wright for the most targets from Marcus Mariota.

But that was last week, and the Bucs certainly didn’t make it difficult on him. This week, however, Sankey and the Titans take on the Cleveland Browns—you know, the team that Chris Ivory racked up points on with little resitance.

With that being said, an additional sit for the week would be Marcus Mariota. Don’t get to hyped up over the great debut. The Browns (surprisingly) are one of the better teams in the league in terms of limiting QB fantasy points. Probably a good idea to try out another QB option.

Maybe next week—Jordan Cameron, TE Miami Dolphins: I know, they’re playing the Jaguars, but (the second surprise of the day) the Jags are actually pretty good at limiting tight ends. I guess everyone does something well, right?

Greg Olsen was a non-factor in Week One when the Carolina Panthers met up with Jacksonville, and since Week 4 of last season the Jags have allowed only three tight end touchdowns. Damn impressive, Jaguars. Even I give credit where credit is due.

Cameron is a very promising tight end, and the odds are he may be your only one on roster. If that’s the case, check the free agents for Austin Seferian-Jenkins or something.

By the way, this doesn’t apply to Rob Gronkowski next week. There’s no stopping him. There’s a high-80% chance he’s not even human.

Brett Favre & Terrell Owens Notable Nominees for Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016

0

brett favre terrell owens first year nominees hall of fame 2016 nflNFL Football is back, which means aside from making fun of the Jacksonville Jaguars and gawking over J.J. Watt, it’s time to start narrowing down the the nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016.

The 108 modern-day nominees were announced Wednesday night with two names in particular that every football fan should recognize immediately: Brett Favre and Terrell Owens.

That’s right, it’s officially been five years since Favre’s 109th and final retirement speech. Don’t you feel old?

Despite being a running joke amongst NFL fans for retiring and coming back numerous times, Favre is the most sure-fire first ballot Hall of Famer on the list. A 1997 Super Bowl XXXI Championship with the Green Bay Packers, three NFL MVP awards, and basically every passing record that Peyton Manning hasn’t broken yet make Favre a heavy favorite to have his bust in the Hall next year.

Let’s not put aside the other candidates just yet, however. Especially Terrell Owens. We all know he doesn’t like to feel excluded.

Easily one of the best wide receivers in the league’s history, Owens could do it all in his 15 professional years with five different franchises. And by do it all, I mean catch, run, block, and stir up controversy. He may be a member of the 10,000 receiving yards club, but he is probably most known for the latter.

In fact, you may remember Owens from such news stories as wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey in 2004 after his Philadelphia Eagles lost to them. Or saying that they would be undefeated if he had Brett Favre passing to him instead of Donovan McNabb. Or spitting in DeAngelo Hall’s face. Or “That’s my quarterback.”

But at the end of the day, 153 receiving TDs, five All-Pro selections, and 2000s All-Decade Team honors should be more than enough to get him in based on football alone.

Brian Westbrook, Lawyer Milloy, Clinton Portis, and John Carney round out the other notable first-year-eligible nominees up for election. Alongside them are Terrell Davis, Tony Dungy, Morten Anderson, Kurt Warner, Marvin Harrison, and Jimmy Johnson, all of whom were finalists from the 2015 Class.

In a perfect world, all of these guys would be enshired next year, but there’s just not enough room on that stage.

Of all last year’s finalists, my money is on Terrell Davis. The 6th round pick out of Georgia was a huge part of the Broncos’ back-to-back victories in Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII, earning Super Bowl MVP Honors in the first one. Davis finished his career with the 1998 NFL MVP, 1990s All-Decade Team Honors, and Broncos’ franchise records in rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns. Not bad. Not bad at all.

After Davis, I like Marvin Harrison to get the nod. Eight Pro Bowls, a Super Bowl XLI ring, and every Indianapolis Colts’ franchise receiving record possible make him hard to overlook. He’s already in the Colts Ring of Honors, so it’s only a matter of time before he has a bust in Canton as well.

As much as I would love to see Kurt Warner get in next year, I feel he may be overshadowed by Favre this go-round. The first QB to make great success with two different franchises (St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals) look easy may have to wait another year before hearing his name called.

Then again, let’s not rule out the possibility of another Favre comeback till the bust is actually on the wall.

EMPIRE’S Cookie Lyon Fashion Do’s

0

The guilty pleasure that has become the nation’s new go to show brought us more than just juicy storylines and twisted characters. Empire has taken the world by storm and Taraji P. Henson’s character Cookie Lyon has done so with a slew of fashion choices that killed us and gave us life… at the same damn time.

As the resident fashion hottie here at Movie TV Tech Geeks (yes, self proclaimed) and in honor of season two finally coming our way in t-minus next week, I bring to you some of Cookie Lyon’s best outfits from season one of a show that only stands to get better.

Remember, fashion is not about how well you wear or if you wear the latest trends  but more about how you rock the clothes you put on your back. Yea, there are aspects of colors, patterns and materials that some feel should be properly combined in order to be considered fashionable. But in the day in which we live, anything pretty much goes. It just all comes down to how you do it.

So, here is a look at some of my favorite Cookie Lyon looks. I like to call it my “Ode to the Cookie.”

cookie lyon fashion leopard print

Leopard

There was so much of this print last season and it was everything… like every time. Now aside from it being my personal favorite, Cookie Lyon wore is flawlessly. The truth is not every one can wear leopard and those that do sometimes do too much, but Cookie always had it on point. From her leopard mini sweater dress and matching leopard fedora to her super mini leopard turtleneck dress and white fur, Cookie is queen of the leopard print.

Furs

Speaking of furs, Cookie rocked the hell out of them. A fur coat is s symbol of having money and for her to have a nice collection of them fits so perfectly with her personality. She is ghetto fabulous, she is classy, she is hood and a fur coat is the robe that adorns her diva backside. She even wore fur vests which is a hard thing to do because so many people just mess it up. My favorite fur coat is her winter white trench coat she wore with one of her leopard dresses.

White

I never really follow the no white after Labor Day because when you think about it, from Labor Day until the next Labor Day is after Labor Day so. Read it again, it makes sense.

My favorite white Cookie ensemble is the jumpsuit she wore to the all white party. It was sexy, it was sleek and the epitome of her character. The slick high ponytail and gold accessories where the perfect touch.

Prints

The high life feel of Empire would not be what it is without the wardrobe and Cookie’s wardrobe was and I trust will remain full of all kinds of great prints. She had animal prints, like her long, high split black and grey zebra dress. She also wore a really bad snakeskin moto jacket that I would so love to add to my closet. She wore floral body cons and she rocked intricately patterned maxi dresses.

Some people like to stay away from prints but those that do are missing out on great opportunities to add some flare to their wardrobe that really makes a statement. Prints are fun, they are trendy and depending on how you do it, they are that perfect statement.

Color

Cookie wore a lot of bold colors last season and I can only hope and pray that she continues to do so. The great thing about adding a pop of color to your outfit is it makes you stand out and boy does Cookie stand out. In just about every room she is in and every place that she goes.

My favorite pop of color from season one is her magenta wrap fur piece she wore with her floral body con dress. It is so divalious.

cookie lyon black fashion dos 2015 empire

Jackets

Cookie’s jacket game is always on point. She delved into all kinds of jackets and blazers and with each one she made it her own.

She had some good pieces in black and traditional cuts but she also had some funky ones like the denim patchwork jacket with gold trim. My favorite is the black cape blazer she paired with a black and white print skirt.

Empire does more than give us something to care about on Wednesdays. It gives us a look in to a world that so many want to be a part of and in that world, fashion is a central factor in how people look at you. Cookie Lyon is a force to be reckoned with so it only makes sense that her wardrobe is fit for a queen.

New EVEREST Featurette Gets More Intense

0

everest movie trailer images 2015Walden Media’s newest venture takes form in the movie Everest, which is about a group of mountain climbers who embark on a journey up the world’s highest peak. The movie showcases the group’s struggle to survive as they make their way up the summit.

Since in the past Walden Media has been known for their kid-friendly films, such as Bridge to Terabithia and The Chronicles of Narnia, Everest is definitely a step in a new direction. The CEO of Walden media, Frank Smith revealed, “[Walden Media] saw [Everest] as a compelling story for adults to take their teenage kids to see…it is PG-13 not because it has any sexual content or extreme violence. It’s due to the intensity of people freezing to death up on the mountain. But it has a good message that will appeal to parents with older kids.”

The company has also come out to say that they are looking to expand their market to more mature (yet still family oriented) films and not strictly kid-friendly movies. This change taking place after the studio underwent a big overhaul in 2013, where it decided to focus in on co-financing and film production. In addition, Walden Media has dialed down its ventures, aiming for 14 movies a year instead of its usual 24. Smith noted that previously the company wasn’t “reacting quickly enough to the changes in the industry,” and therefore its new model is more aligned with the current conditions of the movie business.

The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and Jason Clark, as mountain climbers who are hit by a severe storm while making their way to the top of Everest. The film is based on the true story of a group of climbers that made the trek in 1996. Unfortunately, all eight of them never made it back down from the summit. The movie’s cast also includes notable actresses, Emma Watson and Keira Knightley.

In order to hype the movie, they have released a featurette explaining the basis behind the film and ultimately why people even dare attempt such a feat as climbing Mount Everest.

The featurette opens with the narrative stating, “human beings simply aren’t built to function at the cruising altitude of a 747,” as bold music establishes the intensity behind the film.

It continues with star Jake Gyllenhaal explaining that the journey up the mountain is “[often not] about getting to the top,” and rather the idea of conquering something or facing a fear.

David Breashears, the co-producer on the film, describes the indescribable feeling he had when he became the 137th person to get to the top of Mount Everest.

Baltasar Kormakur, who directed the film, goes on to say that climbing Everest to him is like a “metaphor for any kind of audition.” Baltasar explains there is no true answer to why someone would want to climb the mountain, however in doing so one is able to determine who they are at “the core of themselves.”

The teaser ends with a snippet of the movie, showing a climber explaining, “There is a competition between every person and this mountain. The last word always belongs to the mountain.”

There is no doubt that this movie will exemplify the ability for a person to persevere, show strength and resilience during unimaginable adversity. Just from the preview, it is clear that the movie will immerse viewers into the emotions and action that accompanies the extreme temperatures and conditions encountered on the mountain.

However, it is questionable if simply the visuals and cast can carry a 2-hour feature film and keep things interesting throughout. Unfortunately, I have a hard time feeling too excited about Everest, due to the fact that the underlying themes are nothing new (people looking within themselves to defy odds – i.e. 127 hours, etc).

You can catch Everest in theatres now.

CATFISH 417 Hundra, Emily & Machine Gun Kelly

catfish 417 emily hundra machine gun kelly 2015 imagesSeason 4 Episode 17 of Catfish is all about Hundra and Emily. This episode is particularly unique as musician Machine Gun Kelly joins Nev, as a temporary replacement for Max.

The team gets an email from a girl named Hundra, a young woman living in Philadelphia, who says she has become very attached to a girl named Emily she met online. However, Hundra is very insecure about her relationship as Emily continues to play games and refuses to meet her.

In addition, Hundra warns the Catfish team that in reaching out to them she is risking a lot. This is because she grew up in Haiti, where she was raised in a family with very strict expectations. Therefore, the fact that she is gay is not supported by her culture and she believes she may be disowned once her family finds out.

Nonetheless, Nev and Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) decide they want to help Hundra and proceed to video-chat her.

During their chat, Hundra reveals that she has been heart broken numerous times by men and reached out to Emily when she was feeling “gay for a day.” Hundra says she connected with Emily over they struggles they faced with their sexuality and being fearful of the reaction of their families.

She then goes on to tell them about an incident where she wound up sending Emily money to help her pay for repairs on her car. However, Emily has been playing games with her throughout their whole relationship and it has become increasingly distressful.

Nev and MGK drive out to meet up face-to-face with Hundra. At their meet up, Hundra explains how nervous she is, as a Haitian coming out as gay on national television.  They go on to discuss her relationship with Emily. Hundra explains that during the incident where she sent money, Emily had given her a differing address and name to the one she was familiar with. In addition, Emily has texted Hundra with various different cell phone numbers. Currently, she has been texting her from a number with a Philadelphia area code, not a New York code where Emily claims to live.

Nev is surprised to find out that over the whole course of their relationship, Hundra has only received three pictures of Emily. On top of that, Emily has also deactivated her Facebook profile.

Nev begins showing MGK the ropes when it comes to snooping and uncovering a catfish.

catfish 417 what we know images 2015They begin by reverse searching her current phone number, which comes up with the name “Geralyn,” a 21-year-old living in Philadelphia. The picture associated with “Geralyn” is a young, shorthaired tomboy who identifies as a lesbian. The story gets interesting when they notice that the girl “Geralyn” is seen kissing and being affectionate with in a number of her Facebook profile pictures turns out to be the girl Hundra knows as Emily. However, her name is Melanie not Emily.

The next day they return to Hundra’s house. They tell her all about “Geralyn” and Melanie (aka Emily). Hundra is rightfully distraught over the potential truth about the person she thought she knew.

They end up sending a message to Melanie and shortly after receive a call from her. Melanie explains that she had no idea that someone was using her pictures pretending to be “Emily.”

The next day, Nev, Hundra and MGK meet up with Melanie and explain to her the whole situation. Melanie explains that she is in a relationship, but Geralyn is her ex-girlfriend. Nev begins suggesting that Geralyn has been using Melanie’s images in order to catfish Hundra as Emily.

They wind up getting Melanie to call Geralyn and convince her to meet them.

Nev, MGK and Hundra drive to Geralyn’s house. Here, it is clear that Emily does not exist and it was all Geralyn using Melanie’s photos to get her mad. Geralyn admits that she initially was just playing games but developed feelings for Hundra.

Rightfully, Hundra is upset and claims she went looking for a “lipstick lesbian and ended up with a f*****g butch d***.” Both Nev and MGK are taken back by Hundra’s rage.

It is at this point that the episode does a complete 180.

The next day, Geralyn messages Nev and asks to meet up with them without Hundra. Nev and MGK go and talk with her, where Geralyn explains that she “doesn’t know Hundra” and that they have only been talking for 4 weeks, not the 9 months that Hundra claimed.

The big shocker is when Geralyn says that Hundra had asked both Melanie and her for help. Therefore, it now becomes evident that Melanie was in on the whole plan of getting Hundra on the show. Geralyn says the only reason she agreed to help Hundra get on the show was because Melanie (her ex) really wanted her to.

Basically, they catfished Catfish!

MGK is enraged, as the whole thing was a charade orchestrated by Hundra, Melanie and Geralyn.

MGK storms out and says he is about to get “crazy” on Hundra.

They end up getting Hundra and Melanie to come to Geralyn’s house and right away Melanie tries to continue the act, and pretend that she is mad that Geralyn used her pictures. However, Geralyn right away tells her “this whole thing is over,” referring to the fact that Nev and MGK are aware the whole thing was a set-up to get on TV.

Hundra claims she wanted to be on TV to come out. However, Nev and MGK aren’t going to let it slide and Nev points out that the show isn’t about her coming out anymore; it’s now about her lying, setting a bad example and looking incredibly selfish.

Melanie explains that she was friends with Hundra and wanted to help her out. Geralyn was just strung along because she wanted to please her ex. They end up apologizing, but Nev and MGK are definitely not impressed with the whole situation.

Hundra ends up coming to Nev’s hotel and wants to talk to only him. She tells him that she is not going to apologize, as she wanted her coming out to be “something memorable for [her].”

Two months later, Geralyn and Melanie claim that they “learned their lesson.” In addition, Hundra says she is slowly coming out to her family and friends. She then tells Nev and MGK that she is not sorry for what she did and that they should be happy that she gave them the show that she did.

Needless to say, Nev and (especially) MGK are not too happy with being somewhat catfished themselves. Nonetheless, it did make for an interesting and completely unexpected twist.

2015 Canadian Federal Election Anyone’s Ball Game

2015 canadian federal election anyones ball game toronto blue jaysThe Canadian federal election is about a month away as it will take place on October 19th, 2015. Currently it’s considered a three-horse race between the Conservatives, the Liberals, and the New Democratic Party (NDP). For American readers, that translates to Republicans, Democrats, and can’t-get-elected respectively.

The election is expected to be so close that it seems as though the projected winner is always changing. However what most of the projectionists have failed to factor in at this point is that there could be a major event going on in Canada’s largest city at the same time as the federal election. Here’s the schedule for the upcoming 2015 American League Championship Series (ALCS):

Game 1: October 16th
Game 2: October 17th
Game 3: October 19th (time is to to be announced)
Game 4: October 20th

Game 3 of the ALCS would be in the home building of the road team. What that means is that whoever has the lower winning percentage between the two qualifiers for the ALCS would host game three.

There’s still two to three weeks left in the regular season and then there is a round of divisional series to be played. However, at present, the top two favorites in the American League are the Toronto Blue Jays and the Kansas City Royals – two teams that do not like one another. For the moment it’s the Blue Jays that are favored to win the ALCS as their play over the last couple of months have made them the betting favorite – not just for their league but to win the 2015 World Series outright (source: bet365).

While standings can change as fast as the polls, currently there is a distinct possibility that the Jays and Royals could meet in Toronto in a game that would return the ALCS to Canada’s largest city for the first time since 1993.

However, even if the game is not played in Toronto, as long as the Blue Jays are in it there will surely be a degree of increased voter apathy among baseball fans for the 2015 federal election. While the game-time for game three has not yet been announced surely part of the game will overlap with the election booths being open. From what I recall from past elections, you can vote throughout the day, but for baseball fans the day will be all the more cluttered.

Like I mentioned, the last time the Jays were in the ALCS was 1993, the year of the Carter home run. The instant his homer went over the left-field wall at the Skydome was the last instant of baseball playoffs in Toronto Blue Jays’ history to date.

Kim Campbell was Prime Minister, Roberto Alomar played 2nd base, plenty of current Canadian baseball fans weren’t born yet, and so many of them have never known a Jays’ team that was in contention. Due to the latter, a 2015 playoff run promises to captivate Blue Jays’ fans, which are firmly entrenched in all parts of Canada, as much as any NHL playoff series. After all, the Jays might not contend for another 22 years – you could vote federally a handful of times during that span.

The 2015 election won’t just be between Stephen Harper‘s “old stock Canadians”, Justin Trudeau’s “nice hair,” and Thomas Mulcair’s attempt to put his party into power for the very first time. Josh Donaldson’s batting average, R.A. Dickey’s fastball, and the reality of sports fans not paying attention to politics, Noam Chomsky’s worst nightmare, could be factors as well.

I think, at this point, an astute reader might wonder if baseball fans in Canada tend to favour one party over another and it’s a good question. If they do then baseball-fan-voter-apathy could affect who governs for the next four years. Certainly regions of Canada vary on political loyalties so maybe the start time of the game could affect things in that way.

The voting booths, from what I recall from past elections, are a morning-to-evening thing and employers are supposed to let you have some time to vote during the business day if you need it. Surely this year more than others some Canadians will plan around the game more than they plan around their employer.

Since Political Science was only my minor I won’t offer much more of a guess of how game three of the ALCS could affect things. However I will safely say, with an ever-so clever pun, that the 2015 Canadian election is “anybody’s ball game.”

I’m sure that the newspapers and commentators will think of that pun too as Jose Bautista’s on-base-percentage is displayed on FOX while Peter Mansbridge and all shuffle through their own sets of statistics.

GOODNIGHT MOMMY Movie Review 2015

goodnight mommy review image 2015 horrorThis week I checked out Goodnight Mommy, which is a horror movie from Austria. The movie is about two twin boys, Elias and Lukas, who begin getting concerned when a woman who returns from facial surgery claiming to be their mother doesn’t appear to be so.

When the trailer was initially released, many reviewers titled it as the “scariest trailer” they’d ever seen. Without a doubt, the trailer was eerie as it utilized dramatic pauses, scary movie staples (i.e. bugs, open corn fields and dark forests), while still keeping audiences wondering what will result from the strange relationship between the two boys and their mom.

First off, I am definitely not a scary movie junkie. Although I have watched a fair share of horror flicks, I do not venture out to watch new ones as they are released. However, I thought I would give Goodnight Mommy a try as I have not seen a foreign horror movie before and many people note them as being quite different from the normal U.S. horror movie. I will admit that, for comfort purposes, I had to invite two friends over to actually watch the movie.

The movie begins with an old audio clip of the mother’s voice, which is warm and loving as she sings a lullaby. There is also a reference to an accident, as photos are shown of the family with a father figure, who is notably absent from the rest of the film.

From the get-go, it is clear that Elias and Lukas are very close. They rely on each other for fun and socialization as they live in an isolated house in the Austrian countryside. Together they run through cornstalks, play in the lake and jump for hours on their trampoline.

The movie quickly dives into the strange storyline featuring the mother. I definitely appreciate how the film gets straight to the point, as it shows the mother wrapped in white gauze following her surgery just minutes into the start of the film.

At first, the film had me believing that the mother was the monster of the film. Her creepy appearance, cold interactions and harsh treatment of her sons, painted her to be an intruder attempting to portray the two young boys’ mom. In addition, since it isn’t clear at first why the mother had facial surgery, my initial assumption was that she went through with the operation simply for her own vanity. Thus, she obviously did not take into account the affect it would have on her two young children, making her seem even more evil.

Things begin to take a slow turn when the two sons start plotting a way to figure out whether the woman who returned is truly their mother or not.  However, about half way through the film things begin to escalate. The twin boys end up tying up the woman and keep her as prisoner. After enduring several grotesque forms of torture (i.e. burning of skin, supergluing of the lips) from the two boys, the woman is still unable to convince Lukas and Elias that she is truly their mother.

The big twist happens when the woman is finally able to break free, but ends up falling into a booby trap set up by the boys and wakes up on the living room floor as Elias threatens to set her and their house on fire. Here, it is revealed to the audience that Lukas has been a figment of Elias’ imagination the whole time. Lukas was actually killed in an unfortunate accident (presumably with their father as well) and the mother’s facial surgery was actually reconstructive surgery due to injury.

However, Elias is unable to realize that Lukas is no longer with him, he sees his mother as the liar, and the movie ends in her death.

Although the movie had its suspenseful and thrilling moments, I personally didn’t find it that scary. Definitely not the scariest movie I have seen, or even close to be honest. The only time I found myself turning away was when the torture got gory.

Overall, I thought the story of the movie was interesting and it definitely delivered with a plot twist. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the execution of the movie all too intriguing, especially since it was marketed as a horror film. To me, the trailer for the movie was deceptive, as the movie turned out to be much more of a psychological thriller, not the groundbreaking horror story that I thought it was coming into it.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a horror movie that will leave you trembling, I suggest you keep looking. This movie offers a unique and interesting back-story, one that definitely surprised me, but I would say it is debatable whether it is enough to carry the whole film (in my opinion, it wasn’t).

Can Barcelona Defend The Champions League?

0

barcelona defends champions league soccer image 2015Barcelona created history last season as they won a treble of the league title, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey to become the only club in the world to have won a treble twice in their history – they achieved the same feat under Pep Guardiola in the 2008/09 season.

As they begin their 2015/16 Champions League, they have another crack at football history: if they can successfully defend the European Cup they won after defeating Juventus in Berlin in June, then they will become the only side to have won back-to-back Champions League.

The Catalan side have started their 2015/16 La Liga campaign strongly, having successfully negotiated away trips to the San Mames, where they defeated Athletic Bilbao 1-0 courtesy of a Luis Suarez strike and they also came away triumphant from a visit to the Vicente Calderon, where they dispatched Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid 2-1 with the help of a goal each from Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Luis Enrique’s side have been drawn in a Champions League group comprising of Italian giants Roma, Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen and Belarussian outfit BATE Borisov and will begin their campaign with a visit to the Stadio Olimpico of Roma.

The group is not the toughest for the Catalan giants and they will fancy their chances of topping it ahead of their rivals. Barcelona have already played Rudi Garcia’s side once, in a pre-season friendly at the Camp Nou and dispatched the Italian outfit 3-0.

However, the result from the friendly cannot be taken as definitive, but it will be a major surprise if any of the three sides in Barcelona’s Champions League group finish up top ahead of them.

Past the group stages, there are two teams that have been regulars in the Champions League semi-finals for the past few seasons: Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Barcelona defeated Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich at the semi-final stage last term and they did it in style – they ran away 3-0 winners in the first leg at home, before doing enough in the second leg to put their foot off the gas in the second half at the Allianz Arena.

Rafael Benitez’s Real Madrid have started their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 shellacking of Shakhtar Donetsk and are yet to concede a goal from their first four matches across all competitions so far.

They have added some quality players including Mateo Kovacic, Danilo and Lucas Vazquez amongst others and the new arrivals have added depth to the squad. Under Carlo Ancelotti’s management last season, Los Blancos were running empty towards the end of the season, so tired they were due to the Italian’s insistence on playing the same set of players match after match.

However, Benitez has a penchant for rotating players and the addition of new faces to the first team will facilitate his methods even more.

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are likely to go deep in the Champions League and if Barcelona can see off their challenge they may just create yet another history next year.

Analysing Manchester City’s Champions League Soccer Group

0

manchester city champions league group image soccer 2015Manchester City have consistently struggled in the Champions League. They have been unlucky to have been pitted in some of the most difficult groups ever since they started qualifying regularly for the elite European competition and have made a meal of progressing to the knock-out stage of the competition. For the last two seasons, they have come up against Barcelona at the round of 16 stage and have been eliminated by the Catalan giants.

This season, too, the Citizens find themselves in one of the toughest groups. They are up against reigning Italian champions and last season’s European Cup finalists Juventus, reigning Europa League champions Sevilla and Bundesliga giants Borussia Monchengladbach.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side started their 2015/16 Champions League campaign against Juventus at the Etihad Stadium and went toe to toe with the Italians in the first half of the game. They went ahead in the 57th minute courtesy of a controversial Vincent Kompany strike, but Mario Mandzukic brought the scores level minutes later. A late strike from Alvaro Morata sealed all three points for the Old Lady and left the Citizens with a sense of déjà vu as they again succumbed at home in a Champions League clash.

The Manchester giants are absolutely flying in the Premier League, having won all five of their league games. They have scored 11 times in their outings and are yet to concede a goal, such has been their domestic dominance, but in Europe they have encountered familiar failings.

Manchester City will be up against Borussia Monchengladbach at the Stadion im Borussia-Park on 30th September in their next Champions League encounter. And they will fancy their chances of getting all three points against a side that are sitting rock bottom in the Bundesliga standings, having lost all four of their games, and who also lost their opening game of the Champions League to Sevilla 3-0.

However, it is difficult to predict any Manchester City game in the elite European game considering the fact they always make it difficult for themselves. Their draw against CSKA Moscow away from home last season after dominating the early proceedings is a case in point.

There are also similarities between the form of Lucien Favre’s side and that of Juventus. The Old Lady have endured a torrid start to their league campaign in Italy and are yet to win a game, but against Manchester City they proved themselves to be the better side. Not many will count against the Foals doing the same on 30th September.

Sevilla, led by Unai Emery, will also prove to be a hard set of fixtures for Manchester City as the Spanish giants are led by an astute man at the helm. Emery has guided his side to successive Europa League triumphs and their home ground, Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, has proven to be a fortress where they went over a year unbeaten.

The Andalusians will be extremely difficult opponents for Manchester City and it remains to be seen if the Citizens have it in them to navigate successfully through this difficult group.

Kris Jenner Holding Out For Scott Disick

kris jenner still holding on with scott disick 2015 gossipWhile most sources are reporting that there is no chance for a Kourtney Kardashian-Scott Disick reunion after their break up a few months ago, it seems that mom Kris Jenner still has some faith.

When asked about the split, Kris explained how she still remains close with her daughters ex-boyfriend Scott saying, “Scott is like my son. He came over yesterday. He was on his way over to see the kids. He’s a great dad. They’ve got things to figure out.”

Back in July, Kourtney dumped Scott after photos surfaced of him getting close with his ex-girlfriend on a yacht while on vacation. Although the Kourtney and Scott were not married, they have been in an on-and-off relationship for 9 years and share three young children together.

When asked about Scott’s reported drinking and prescription drug problem, Kris simply replied, “You know what. I don’t see that side, so I don’t want to talk about what I don’t know. I just know that you know, they’ll figure it out.”

She goes on to explain how she isn’t forcing any pressure on her daughter to forgive Scott, however she is hoping for a reconciliation between the two saying, “I don’t tell her things like [you should forgive Scott] because I don’t think that’s my place. But my kids were brought up to be very forgiving people. My wish is that, you know, they work it out and figure it out and we’ll see what happens.”

Kris ended the interview stating, “[Scott’s] a great dad and he loves the kids and he loves Kourtney…I love him.”

joy behar miss america nurse comment on the view 2015 gossipThe View was on major damage control following the controversy earlier this week.

The show was hit with huge public backlash after co-hosts Michelle Collins and Joy Behar commented on Miss Colarado Kelly Johnson, questioning why she was wearing a stethoscope if she was “just” a nurse.

Soon after the show aired, thousands of viewers (including many nurses) criticized the hosts for disrespecting the nursing profession. In addition, Kelly Johnson appeared on Ellen where she talked about the attention she was able to bring to nurses through the pageant, although she chose to forgo talking about The View scandal.

Rightfully, the insensitive and ignorant commentary from Michelle and Joy caused for the show to lose several big sponsors, including Johnson & Johnson and Eggland.

Therefore on Friday, not only did the hosts apologize for their comments, but they also invited a slew of nurses as special guests. The hosts talked to several nurses from NYU College of Nursing about their training, their jobs and the struggles they face as they provide healthcare to others.

I have a feeling this scandal will definitely have Joy and Michelle thinking twice before poking fun at any group that provides a positive service to the public. Although the controversy probably did help bring publicity to The View, which has been a sinking ship for the past few seasons.
