Atlanta Falcons vs Redskins Week 5 Indepth NFL Review

atlanta falcons vs redskins week 4 indepth nfl 2015 imagesAtlanta Falcons 25   Washington Redskins 19

The football gods had mercy on me and my Atlanta Falcons this Sunday. I was blessed with some luxury suite tickets to the game after being punished for two Sundays in a row with no TV service courtesy of Comcast, AKA the devil. And Atlanta found a way to win after everything that could go wrong, did just that.

The two Matts had a rough outing in the Georgia Dome. Bryant missed two field goals, clanging the ball off the upright on back to back misses. Ryan had an ugly fumble and two interceptions that tested the newly dependable ATL defense.

The first half saw little scoring, but was still entertaining. Maybe it was boring for you common folk watching at home, but free beer and food made it seem like a shootout in the Super Suite.

Atlanta moved the ball. They simply could not stick it in the end zone.

The end of the first half had Washington up on the Dirty Birds 7-3.

The second half had more scoring drama, with four lead changes. Kirk Cousins was sacked just once for the game and was able to find the open man repeatedly, though hardly ever over the middle.

Julio had plenty of targets, but did not have the dominant type game we got spoiled with during the first three weeks. Roddy White was more involved this week and even had the entire Dome chanting his name once he registered his first catch. Fans wanted #84 to feel their appreciation after his discontentment came out last week. Matt Ryan even had to ask for quiet as he tried to run the next play. We Atlanta fans are not the brightest.

Devonta Freeman went off again. Three weeks in a row he has carried the offense. Without his production, Atlanta is not undefeated at this point. His apparent score late in the game was overturned due to the NFL’s disastrous stance on what a catch is and isn’t. Freeman did get six a couple plays later on a short run to put Atlanta up 19-16 after the extra point.

Freeman had 153 yards and a TD against PFF’s #1 rated run defense. He also became the first NFLer to score seven touchdowns in his first three starts.

Not bad for a guy that wasn’t even supposed to start this year.

Washington didn’t lay down after losing the lead with just 24 seconds left. Cousins marched his team down in a hurry to get a shot at tying it up with a FG. Dustin Hopkins’ 52 yarder looked like a lame duck that would never make it. However, it got over the crossbar and we headed for overtime.

For the record, the beer is still free during overtime in a luxury box. Drink fast though, it can end quick.

That’s just what happened when Kirk Cousins tossed a pick six to Robert Alford who returned it 59 yards for the walk off touchdown. I was hoping the kid would just go Bo Jackson and head right through the tunnel for the locker room.

The win put Atlanta at 5-0, but they get little rest before they head to New Orleans for a Thursday night game. The Saints are a tough out for the Falcons even though it appears New Orleans is in for a long year at 1-4.

3 Things:

  • Matt Bryant is human after all. What are the odds of hitting the upright on back to back field goal tries?
  • This team looks complete. Unbalanced clubs lose games like this with the star QB turning the ball over three times and being inaccurate most of the game. This team used the running game when passing wasn’t working and relied on the defense to make big plays in the end. And the two successful fourth down calls showed coach Quinn is not afraid of the moment.
  • Jacob Tamme had his way with the Redskins defense, hauling in 8 of his ten targets for 94 yards.

Julio Watch: Jones was dealing with a hamstring problem all week and that could have been the reason for his off game. He had five catches, but never separated from defenders like we are used to seeing. He won’t have much time to heal up with his team set to travel to New Orleans for TNF. We could see Freeman called upon to carry the load again next week. He has been money so far.

Tweets of the game:

No quit in this year’s version of the Birds.

Atlanta Falcons vs Washington Redskins Highlights

KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS 1017 Last Straws

keeping up with kardashians 1017 last straw recap 2015 imagesThis episode on Sunday was the season 10 finale of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In “The Last Straw,” the sisters realized just how serious Kris Jenner’s relationship with her much younger boyfriend Corey Gamble is and Kourtney was forced to deal with the problems that plague her relationship with Scott Disick.

The episode began with Kim showing Khloe a tweet from Caitlyn, which seemed to be Caitlyn’s version of an apology to their mom for “bashing” her in Vanity Fair. Unfortunately, both Kim and Khloe agree that Caitlyn should be apologizing in person and not over a social media platform.

Shortly after, Khloe heads over to Caitlyn’s house to try and sort things out in person. Khloe confronts Caitlyn and finally gets her to somewhat confess to being insensitive about her past relationship with Kris. Although it wasn’t the most elaborate apology ever made, Khloe realizes this is most likely the best she will get from Caitlyn. Off-camera Khloe confesses, “Bruce and I have always had an awesome relationship and I really want my relationship with Caitlyn to be great as well.”

Meanwhile, Scott is busy in Vegas doing multiple club appearances, which leads to him going off on a drawn out partying “bender.” Kourtney is worried about his behavior, but she has clearly seen him go down this road many times in the past so she stays fairly composed when Scott’s friend calls her to tell her about his troubling behavior. Kourtney explains, “I wanna be mad, but then I also worry about Scott’s safety. He definitely has a problem that he has to deal with.”

Later in the episode, we see Kim receive a call while she is having lunch in Kris’ kitchen. Kim puts her cousin Cici on speakerphone and listens as Cici reads out a headline saying that Scott was photographed getting close to a girl while in Monaco. Right away, Kris looks up the article and is in shock to see that the father of her grandchildren seems to be publicly cheating on her daughter. She quickly exclaims, “That piece of s—t!” Both Kim and Kris are disgusted by the pictures of Scott with his arm around another girl and feel bad for Kourtney. However, Kim points out that “maybe it’s time” for Kourtney to finally end her relationship with Scott.

Also in this episode, Khloe begins to realize that Kris’ relationship with Corey Gamble (who is 25 years younger than Kris) is becoming much more serious than Kris is letting on. After some prying, Kris finally admits to her daughters that though she realizes she doesn’t want to get married again, she does really enjoy being with Corey and “loves” him. Additionally, she opens up (a bit too much) and explains her sex life with her relatively new boyfriend, saying, “I literally have too much sex. I’m exhausted.”

After learning just how close Kris and Corey have become, Khloe decides to do her due diligence and invites Corey out for dinner with her and her best friend/interrogator Malika. While at dinner, Khloe and Malika take the time to question Corey on a number of things, including kids and marriage. Malika asks him if he has always been interested in older women, in which Corey jokingly quips back, “Since I was in second grade hitting on my teacher.”

While Scott remains off in France, the family worries about how Kourtney is doing. Kourtney reveals to her mother that she has been feeling dragged down by Scott for some time now, explaining, “When I wake up I feel sick. That’s how I feel pretty much every day.”

The episode ends off with Kourtney having a one-on-one with Kim. Kim tells Kourtney she thinks it’s time that the family rids of all the negative male energy, obviously referring to Scott. Kourtney immediately begins tearing up and tells her she is “on the verge of a mental breakdown.” Kim advises her, “I think you just have to try and move on.” Kourtney seems to agree as she says, “I could never depend on him for a single thing.” However she feels very emotionally invested in Scott, as she has “worked so hard to keep [her] family together.”

The season finale ends with a montage of Kourtney and Scott, showing the happier moments the couple has had throughout the show.  It also highlights some of Scott’s more reckless moments and the ripples they have caused within the family and his relationship with Kourtney. In an off-camera interview Kourtney reveals, “At this point, I’m really just trying to focus on me and the kids, and make them the priority.”

Sneak Peak for Season 11:

In the preview for the upcoming season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, it shows a behind-the-scenes look at Khloe’s infamous Complex magazine shoot, Kim’s struggles with her second pregnancy and a chance to see Scott’s side of the story as he admits, “I f—ked up.”

You can check out the latest Kardashian drama when the show returns for its 11th season on November 15, at 9pm on E!

Tinder Shows Not Much Has Changed In Online Dating

tinders shows not much has changed in online dating 2015 app imagesOnline dating has been a part of social culture for quite some time now. Myself, I got into it a little bit late because I was in a committed relationship when it started to take off and I stayed in that relationship up until 2003. However after it ended I joined the other 20-somethings and soon discovered forums like Lavalife, Plentyoffish, and Match.com. More recently I decided to join Tinder after a young co-worker told me, to my disbelief, what it was all allegedly about.

My initial reaction to her description was that it was too good to be true. A site where you judge someone physically and hooked up with people that liked you too seemed all too easy. However, I gave it a shot with intentions of keeping my 38-year old expectations realistic in consideration of my flabby tummy.

But, now that I have some experience with Tinder, I stand by my original presumption – it was and is too good to be true. While that conclusion left me feeling a little disillusioned I’m usually pretty empathetic in life so I tried to take a different point of view on the app. After further thought it’s my opinion that Tinder is a great place for women to go to get revenge on the male online daters out there after what could arguably be seen as nearly two decades of lies, deceits, and distortions on their parts.

For those that are not familiar with Tinder but that have a general familiarity with modern dating, the former is set apart from other forms of online dating in a couple simple ways. Firstly, Tinder users do not really use a website but instead they use an ‘app’ and that makes it cellular-centric. Secondly, photos of users are far more central to the user’s profile than other online dating approaches. There is no catchy headline with Tinder, there’s no crunched numbers telling you that you are compatible with someone, and there’s no personality assessment.

Tinder is totally shallow and I’m fine with that. It can take years to find someone to marry and people need shallow sex in the mean time, right?

With Tinder you get a user’s first name, age, and a photo. You either swipe that photo to the left to garbage it or you swipe right if you like it. The swiping is done anonymously for the most part but when you both right-swipe one another then the proverbial cat gets let out of the bag for each person.

In short order, each user receives a message indicating that you have selected one another in a Darwinian sense. Banter and common interests may then come into play but Tinder’s reputation is that it is more of an app for ‘hooking-up’ (ie. casual sex without the commitment).

If what I learned in Anthropology 101 back at the University of Alberta is true, then men would like this app more than women. I do not think such an assertion is sexist as long as it is understood that it is not a sweeping assertion: there are exceptions for either sex.

But, on average, men’s instincts are to spread their seeds while women are more selective. If I recall from somewhere or other, this has something to do with how quickly the two can reproduce: a woman takes nine months to fulfill her role while a man needs far less time and could impregnate multiple women in the same day. I guess the issue of reproduction is in the background at all times for us when it comes to sex, even when the foreground is thinking about something far less serious.

But I don’t mean to digress into theories I barely remember. Instead I’ll ask to what extent is Tinder actually an app for hooking-up?

From a heterosexual male perspective, the answer is the same as always: to the extent that a male is able to find a willing female. Those females are definitely out there but Tinder is probably almost as full of women looking for Mr. Right, as opposed to Mr. Right-Now, as any other forum for online dating. While that might understandably frustrate some lustful Tinder-men, in my opinion, it means that online dating has come full circle and back into balance.

In the beginning, a lot of men lied in their online profiles. They seemed to be interested in pursuing relationships, chatted up the lie, and then tried to score with another user under the auspices that it was part of relationship building. But emails from the swooning woman who thought she had a new boyfriend soon followed and went unanswered.

Now Tinder comes along, an app that men are attracted to for the promise of finding ‘hook-ups’ without the lying and guilty conscience, and the site is chocked full of women who are beautiful. The catch is after you swipe one to the right and get lucky enough to get a right-swipe in return you go to read their profiles.

There you will read something to the effect of one of the following statements a fair percentage of the time:

(1) I’m looking for a boyfriend.
(2) Must like my kids.
(3) Must like my dog.
(4) Not into random hook-ups.
(5) Not into hooking up at all.
(6) I’d love to get to know you better.
(7) Not looking to @%$^.

What the right-swipe giveth, the profile taketh away.

Of course there are women that do use Tinder in the spirit and intent that men want it used but there are plenty that aren’t as well. While I can see why the latter might frustrate men I think those men could be honest with themselves.

Did you ever, including in online dating, lead a woman to believe that you were interested in her socially when you were only physically interested? If you answer “yes” to yourself then I think there’s some justice in you seeing a pretty woman that matches your type on Tinder, one that you want to hook-up with as the app implicitly promises, only to find out that she’s looking for a boyfriend that likes her kids and dog and that she doesn’t want to $%^& without commitment.

It may sound misanthropic but well – that’s me: over the long run men and women deserve each other. There are unfair battles along the way but overall a cosmic balance exists.

Men that have probably mis-used other online dating forums to score with wannabe-brides have met women that don’t want to hook-up despite the fact that they are using the app meant to facilitate exactly that – and only that.

It’s clear that Tinder, as a hook-up app, misses the mark but maybe they could tweek things just a bit to solve their problem to a degree. It needs to be redundant and make “what you are looking for” a searchable criteria.

But then, in my opinion, that modification would probably just lead to some women stating that they are looking for hook-ups just to get their faces into search results before stating the opposite in chat or in their profiles. After all, that’s basically what the “I’m on Tinder but not into hooking up” contingent do as soon as they join the site. Yet without that contingent how many woman users would there be?

The original intent of the app has largely lost to the human nature of the users which only makes sense. Sexual selection processes can’t be avoided because they are bigger than Tinder. My guess is that the app, from a male’s point of view, only works for the genius-men, the rich, the very good-looking, or men that use it for the precise reason it wasn’t designed for (ie. finding a soulmate).

For those men that are outside of these groups the sad commentary is that the fundamentals of scoring from online dating likely remains the same. Play the entire field to get feedback from the slim percentage that likes you and then re-pick from them. What I mean is that you should indiscriminately right-swipe a thousand women to find the eight that right-swiped you and then, of those eight, pick the two best ones.

That was always the game but at least with Tinder there’s mitigating circumstances to manage the guilt. Just as it’s not honest to join Match.com when you are looking for a one-night stand it’s not totally honest to join an app meant for facilitating hook-ups when you know second base, or even first base, is only going to happen after dinner with one another’s parents.

New & Improved Andy Dalton Shows Clutch Side with Seahawks Victory

0

new improved andy dalton nfl 2015 imagesMike Nugent’s 42-yard field goal nails the upright and bounces in between them. Just like that, the Cincinnati Bengals were 5-0. That’s right—the Cincinnati Bengals, led by red-headed wonder Andy Dalton, are undefeated.

As one of Dalton’s biggest critics over the years, I have to say, I’m extremely impressed. Dalton led the Bengals back from a 24-7 fourth quarter deficit to tie up the game and eventually win it in extra time.

The Bengals have their first statement win of the year, and Dalton is easily the biggest reason why. His 331 yards through the air, two touchdowns to tight end Tyler Eifert, and five-yard TD scramble was enough to lift the team over the Super Bowl XLVIII and 2014 NFC Champs.

Dalton isn’t just winning on the field, however, he is also turning into the leader that this team and this offense needs in practice and around the facilities in general.

“Right when you clear the defender, look back. There will be a hole, and I’ll have a chance to dot you,” said Marvin Jones, recalling Dalton’s explicit advice earlier in the week which turned into a 44-yard completion on the opening drive. “That’s a play that we obviously practiced, and it was open and it worked out.”

I guess all the jokes at his expense caused Dalton to really buckle down. And a win like this is more than enough to slingshot the Bengals into Super Bowl talk around the water cooler.

“It’s huge. We played a really good team,” said Dalton after orchestrating the game-winning drive in OT. “This was a big game, because we were facing a good team.”

The Seattle Seahawks may be sitting on a 2-3 record right now, but that doesn’t mean much moving forward. Let’s not forget this team was 3-3 around this time last season.

The Bengals schedule doesn’t exactly get easier moving forward from here, but with matchups against division-rivals Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns coming up over the next three weeks, Cincinnati can really separate themselves from the pack in the AFC North at the halfway point of the season with a couple more big wins.

“We don’t flinch, man,” said A.J. Green. “That’s our motto: Don’t flinch.”

Kanye West Gives AMERICAN IDOL A Boost Audition & KUWTK Scott Storm Hits

Kanye West KUWTK Scott Storm Hits 2015 gossipE! has released an exclusive clip from tonight’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In the promo, Kim Kardasian and her mother Kris Jenner are seen discovering the pictures of Scott Disick cuddling up to his ex-girlfriend, Chloe Bartolli. Check out the clip just below.

You may recall that these photos first surfaced early on in the summer. Shortly after, it was announced that Kourtney Kardashian broke up with Scott, who she had been dating for over 9-years and has 3 kids with.

scott disick playing chloe bartoli 2015 gossipThe short clip shows Kim receiving a call from her cousin Cici Bussey while over at Kris’ house. Her cousin gets right to the point and tells Kim, “Scott, front and center, Daily Mail, arms around a girl laying down together with their arms around each other.”

Right away, Kris (who is listening in to the conversation) exclaims “No! That piece of s—t.” She quickly goes online and finds the headline herself.

Kim comments on the unfortunate situation, saying, “it’s just embarrassing.”

Kris tells Kim that she feels bad for Kourtney, in which Kim says “maybe its time,” referring to her sister ending her almost decade long relationship with Scott.

kanye west gives american idol a boost audition 2015 gossipRapper Kanye West surprised judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. as they filmed the auditions for the last season of American Idol. On Saturday, the rapper surprised the cast of the show in San Francisco, as he came for a visit with his wife Kim Kardashian.

Ryan Seacrest took to Instagram to share the unexpected encounter with Kim and Kanye. He posted a photo alongside a caption saying, “Look who’s going to Hollywood! #IdolAuditions #KanyeWest.”

Numerous photos and videos have been posted on social media, revealing that Kanye performed his 2005 hit “Gold Digger” for the 3 judges. Kanye and his family were already in San Francisco to attend the Democratic National Committee fundraiser for President Barack Obama, where Kanye performed. At the event, Obama took some time to give Kanye some humorous tips for his supposed 2020 presidential run.

Obama said, “In case Kanye is serious about this POTUS thing, or as he calls it, Peezy.” First of all, you have to spend a lot of time dealing with strange characters that behave as if they are on a reality TV show. So you’ve got to be cool with that. And second, this is the second important tip: Saying you have a beautiful twisted fantasy – that’s what’s known as ‘off message’ in politics. You can’t say something like that.”

The President finished his advice for Kanye by sarcastically noting, “Do you really think this country is going to elect a black guy from the south side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States? That is crazy! That’s cray!”

Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

0

jurgen klopp at liverpool 2015 soccer imagesFollowing the sacking of Brendan Rodgers from the helm of Liverpool, the club have brought in former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp. The German had a successful seven-year stint at the Signal Iduna Park during the course of which he guided the Black and Yellows to successive league titles in the 2011 and 2012, a DFB Pokal and the final of the Champions League at Wembley in 2013.

However, more than the trophies the fact that the Swabian made the mid table club into the second most powerful club in Germany is the single most astonishing achievement of his tenure at the club.

His appointment at Liverpool has sent the Anfield faithful in frenzy and they are hopeful of finally landing their first Premier League title.

The German took a sabbatical from management after his final season at the Signal Induna Park, and has returned after an all too brief break, looking slimmer than his Borussia Dortmund avatar, but with the same enthusiasm, charm and wit that he has been known for.

The positivity that he emanates – in stark contrast to the stoic demeanour of Rodgers – has no doubt made the Anfield faithful believers in Klopp.

The 48-year-old’s time at Borussia Dortmund saw him develop young and unknown players into superstars. The likes of Nuri Sahin, Ilkay Gundogan and Shinji Kagawa amongst others were unknown quantities before the arrival of Klopp at the club, but under his tutelage they became huge stars and earned big moves – Sahin went to Real Madrid, whereas Kagawa was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. He also brought in the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Mario Goetze and Marco Reus and its telling that he won successive league titles before the latter trio were regulars in his team.

Klopp has a similar team at his disposal at Anfield. There are no big stars and the team is relatively young and the lack of success at the club is likely to motivate them into buying into Klopp’s methodology and give their all for the affable German.

He will have an assortment of forwards in Christian Benteke, Danny Ings, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi to call upon. The midfield has the riches in the form of Philippe Coutinho, James Henderson, Adam Lallana and James Milner. A matter of concern for the German could be in defence as Dejan Lovren has not really got going since he left St Mary’s for Southampton last summer.

The Croatia international is too mistake prone for a defender and often comes across as a liability on the pitch. Martin Skrtel might not fit in the first team if Klopp plays with a high defensive line like he did with Borussia Dortmund. He might be tempted to play Joe Gomez, who was deployed by Rodgers at left-back, in central defence and pair him with Frenchman Mamadou Sakho. Klopp will be pleased with his technical and energetic full-backs in Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno.

It sure promises to be an enticing time for Liverpool supporters.

Nick Chubb: No Workers Comp for Free Football Play

nick chubb no workers nfl ncaa 2015It is truly disgusting to watch college football. How you all continue to do it is beyond me. I know, I know. You love the game of football.

Me, too. I just happen to have a conscience. And seeing what happened to Nick Chubb online (wasn’t watching due to my self-imposed ban on college football) makes me even more determined to stay away from the college game.

At this point I do not know the severity of Chubb’s injury, but it looked really freaking nasty. Like 12 months of rehab nasty.

I almost typed, “don’t know how long Chubb will be out of action.” That’s pitiful.

As if the length of time he will be unable to play for Georgia is more important than how badly this young man is hurt. I guarantee that is the prevailing thought of all the Dawg fans though….” damn, I hope he doesn’t miss the rest of the season.”

Nick Chubb plays for free. Yes, he barters his football abilities for a college scholarship, but he gets no real money. That is a good trade for a guy that never touches the field. But for one of the top ten players in the nation, the deal is clearly unfair.

Seeing Todd Gurley go down last year in similar fashion got my blood boiling since he made the effort to come back after being suspended and was left hung out to dry by his school.

Now here we are again, not even a year later with another Heisman hopeful getting his leg jacked up.

When will these players learn? There is no point in risking injury when you are a top tier player. Nick Chubb would have been a first round draft pick as soon as he declared for the NFL. Now that is up in the air. I’m aware the NFL isn’t perfect. They certainly aren’t player friendly, but at least they pay them for services rendered.

The University of Georgia may teach Nick Chubb enough to earn a degree, but he helps them sell thousands of tickets each week, even for meaningless games against Southern and ULM. Not to mention all that TV money that gets raked in because of superstars like Chubb.

As far as I’m concerned, Nick Chubb is the most valuable employee at UGA. Yet he will receive no worker’s compensation for getting hurt “on the clock.” Fans will leave the game, mostly drunk, worrying about who will step up to take Chubb’s place more than they worry about the man himself. It’s all about the school and the team…except the team forgets about the guy who just got his NFL career put in jeopardy.

The team will suit up next week and keep rolling. Mark Richt will continue to cash huge checks, as will the athletic director at UGA. The TV crew will get paid for their work the rest of the season as they cover the remaining games.

And Nick Chubb will begin the lonely task of rehabbing his knee while cashing no checks.

There is a lesson to be learned here. Actually it should have been learned last year with Todd Gurley being punished by the football gods for his team loyalty.

That lesson? College athletes will continue to be screwed over until they unionize…either formally or they just all decide to take a week or two off collectively. I would love to see the day ESPN and the like get hammered by advertisers who want a refund after all the college games are cancelled over a weekend.

Until that happens I must make a plea to parents all over the U.S. Do not let your child play running back! At best they get their head turned into a canoe over a long career. At worst they tear their knee up just before being able to enter a league that will actually pay them to work.

Unless little Johnny can play QB, punt, or kick consistently, parents should encourage their kids to play an easier sport. The odds are against the kid making it to the professional level anyway. As a running back, the odds are even whose. Just ask Todd Gurley and now Nick Chubb.

UPDATED: THE VIEW: Raven Symoné’s Race Complex

raven symone race complexHow can a people expect to get ahead when even members of its own community deny them the chance to advance themselves via employment opportunities based on an age old method of discrimination rooted in racism? Once more, what does it say about the state of our future when those saying that they are more than willing to show this form of bias are millennials. Aren’t we supposed to be the most advanced and socially accepting generation yet?

Can someone let Raven-Symoné know that please! Her comments on “The View” in which she STANDS UP and proclaims that she would not hair someone with a “ghetto sounding name” has gotten her in hot water once again. People are calling her hypocritical (I mean look at her name) they are accusing her of racism, they are saying she is discriminating and they are right about all these things. But why does she feel like this? What causes her form her mouth and make these kinds of statements? If you have no clue what she said, let me help you, plus we have the full video below, and you can see that even Whoopi Goldberg was rendered speechless.

“Just to bring it back, can we take back ‘racist’ and say ‘discriminatory,’ because I think that’s a better word…And I’m very discriminatory against words like the ones they were saying in those names. I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea. It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.”

Raven said this during a segment in which she and her co-hosts discussed a new study that found Americans make racist assumptions about a person based on their name (because we need a study to tell us that). In the segment, it listed the 60 “most ghetto names” as well which prompted her to show her ass.

Aside from Raven feeling this way, which I will get into more in a bit; the thing that really stings about her words is that it is true. So many employers discriminate in this way and I know first had for this to be the case. I legally have four valid names. My father gave me two last names and a very non ethnic middle name. When I use to apply for jobs as the questionable, Rasheda Abdullah, I didn’t really get any hits back. In fact, I didn’t get any. But, when I applied for jobs with my “other name,” I was able to not only get callbacks and interviews, I actually got a job.

So what Raven is doing when she expresses her disgust with ghetto names is affirming a mindset in corporate America that many companies have because hell, if a black person won’t even hire another black person because of their name, non-black folks who share her sentiment feel justified in their discriminatory practices.

We all know that Raven is wrong, but bringing it back to my question above, what makes her say these things? As you know (or if you don’t) this is not the first time she has made comments rooted in self-hate. With that, the two conclusions I have come to are a) she is way out of touch with reality or b) she thinks she is better than other black people who are “not on her level.”

Sometimes a person doesn’t realize how they come off when they say certain things. That is due to a lack of experience with a subject or a situation, which garners an incomplete view of the world. Raven has never had to apply for a job where her name wasn’t known. I mean she was on a “black show” since she was like four years old. What does she know about having to apply to a job as a no body? Nothing.  That’s why I don’t get why she made those statements and then tried to laugh it off. She has not empathy on this subject.

Which brings me to the other reason and one I believe more and more every time she makes these kinds of statements. She thinks that she is better than other black people. You have been around folks, black or white or whatever, who think that their station in life gives them the right to make snap judgments of others who don’t have what they have. Raven has probably never had the experience of interviewing for a job based solely on your resume and qualifications. That type of treatment breeds entitlement and a feeling of entitlement will always show in a person’s words and actions. Plus, the fact that she didn’t take into consideration that her name is pretty damn “black” further shows that she thinks she is exempted from the ails of the black community. AND it’s hyphenated.

Raven-Symone continues to show how she feels about people who are not like her and it is disgusting. What will it take for her to see other black people as she sees herself- smart, capable and worthy?

UPDATE:

Raven-Symoné waited until the last minute on Sunday to ‘clarify’ her View comments. Here’s what she had to say:

In a Facebook post shared Sunday evening, the co-host clarified her remarks and promised that she has “never discriminated against a name.”

“I’d like to begin by saying that I was not attacking a specific race, but repeating a name that was said in a viral video which has received over 2 million likes,” she wrote to her 4.8 million followers. “My comment was in poor taste. My lack of empathy towards name discrimination was uncalled for….As an equal opportunity employer, I have never discriminated against a name….even though I said I would, it’s not true.”

As soon as the episode aired, a number of viewers began slamming the 29-year-old for her comments. Even Raven’s father had some words to say on Facebook over the weekend.

“I certainly don’t agree with what she said….but she is damn near thirty years old,” Christopher B. Pearman explained on social media. “She’s a grown ass woman making grown ass mistakes. We all have been guilty of this.”

He added, “Her Mother and I Love her Very much and will always support her and have her back. Even if sometimes……….she says some dumb S#%T!”

Tonight, Raven wants to make sure her comments don’t spin further out of control. At the same time, she’s also opening up about her own experiences with discrimination.

“I have been denied many jobs because of my skin color, body size, and age. Each time I was rejected, my self-esteem was negatively affected, so I empathize with those who feel victimized by what I said,” she wrote. “We would hope that when it comes to hiring, our names, physical appearance, sexual orientation, and age would never outweigh our qualifications, but often times, they do, that’s the truth and it sucks. But I should not be part of the problem, I should be part of the solution.”

THE WALKING DEAD Conquering Recap

walking dead 516 conquer finale images 2015The season five finale of “The Walking Dead” covered a lot of ground in the last 90 minutes of the 2015 season. We found out more about the Wolves and just how devious a group they are. Sasha continued her march to crazy town. Daryl and Aaron found themselves in one of the worst case scenarios ever on a show known for hopeless situations. Morgan finally got some quality time on screen while Alexandria lost its innocence along with one hell of an architect.

Morgan made some waves early on as his morning was interrupted by a member of the Wolfpack. After some small talk Morgan destroyed the guy along with his accomplice using his kendo stick. The guy who threatened Morgan was apparently using a pistol with no bullets. Are the Wolves that low on ammo?

Last week’s previews were even more misleading than usual. It had looked like Rick was as good as evicted from Alexandria. But he was not even under house arrest. Michonne was there with him when he woke up from the knockout blow she had delivered. She was not there to hold him prisoner and let him know she was still with him. She did what she did for him not for the Alexandrians.

The Aaron and Daryl adventures continued as they tracked a guy in a red poncho. Aaron gives Daryl the info on the people that got exiled from their community. It’s a good bet these exiles evolved into the Wolves that are out branding the undead and the about to be dead. Evidently they brand themselves as well as we saw with the guys that made the mistake of rolling up on Morgan trying to enjoy a cup of coffee.

Glenn v. Dickless was close to its conclusion with the cowardly Nicholas scaling the walls only to be followed by Glenn. It was a pretty dumb move by Glenn to go out with no gun following a man that has every reason to kill him. Gabriel also decided to head out for a stroll unarmed. This man was just looking to die. His guilt over locking his flock out of the church has pushed him to the edge. I for one was happy he was on a suicide mission. Sasha laying down in a mass grave with her collection of walkers just confirmed her need for a stay in a mental institution.

The town meeting is set to decide the fate of Rick, although Deanna says they are just going to talk things over. Carol wants Rick to tell the town’s folk a story since “the people here are children and children like to hear stories.” Rick forbids Carl from attending the meeting because things may get ugly….and he is likely embarrassed by the crumpled hat his boy refuses to give up. Rick has not backed off much from last week’s mantra of doing what it takes to survive. He says he may have to kill someone at the meeting to make them see his point. His thinking is correct, but his methods are not going to work. You can’t make people follow you by telling them there is a boogeyman, then behaving like said boogeyman.

When Aaron and Daryl wound up at the food warehouse I knew it was too good to be true. There were clear signs of a trap with cans hung on a string along the trailers. But super scout Daryl didn’t notice or care. He wished he had paid more attention once they lifted the trailer door which set off a chain reaction of walker release. There were enough zombies there to overrun all of Alexandria. Daryl had a nice three headed kill with a chain and Aaron had a cool smashing of a walker head in a car door. These epic kills were nice, but didn’t keep the two recruiters from having to climb into a car slash deathtrap as their only means of escape. Aaron found a note in the car that read, “trap, don’t stay, bad people.” Not staying wasn’t really an option at this point.

The Wolves set this trap and apparently have done so on several occasions. I am curious to find out their motivations. Are they cannibals like the Terminites, power hungry like the Governor, or just plain evil? I want to know their end game. Maybe they just want to witness chaos.

The scene with Carol bringing Pete some food then threatening him with a blade to his throat was absolutely gratifying. Here we have a former battered wife that is openly begging for a known abuser to come at her, just so she has a good reason to shank him into nonexistence. Carol is completely confident in who and what she has become. Pete wisely declined her invitation. This confrontation may have been his breaking point that led to his eventual downfall.

If I’m Aaron, stuck in a car with Daryl, I would have had to protest him lighting up a cigarette. I don’t care if he was about to sacrifice himself so I could escape. No smoking in a closed up sedan! Gotta think about your health Daryl! I was impressed with Aaron refusing to let Daryl be the bait so Aaron could make a run for it. They were going to make a run for it together when Morgan arrived as a savior, giving them room to bounce from the car and get behind the fence safely. Daryl asked Morgan a simple question, “Why.” His response was, “because all life is precious.”

The aimless Gabriel has the same feeling I have about him. He wants to die. He somehow thinks he has the gumption to let a walker just come up and eat him alive. He thinks better of it as he uses the noose around the walker’s neck to pull his head slap off! I can’t imagine the situation that lead to this person being fitted for a noose. Unfortunately Father Gabriel survived this encounter. Damn it.

Speaking of characters that need to die, why is Eugene still on this show? If they simply wrote him out of the plot and never mentioned what happened, I’d be OK with it. His robotic hillbilly speak is enough for me to skip over his scenes. Could not care less what his thoughts are, what his goal is going forward, or what happens to him. His scene with Abraham was utterly useless.

The Glenn and Nicholas battle continued with Glenn now shot (shoulder of course, A-Team style). The two scuffle then Glenn is left for dead under an unplayful dogpile of walkers. Gabriel is shell shocked and does something dumb just as I have been waiting for him to do. The gate guard asks him to lock the gate for him and he simply forgets in his trance like state. What kind of guard asks someone else to close the gate any way. Of all the duties in Alexandria, I would think that closing the gate is in the top one or two.

the walking dead 516 conquer recap 2015 imagesThe gate being left open turns out to be exactly what Rick needs in a strange twist. Gabriel’s stupidity lets in a few walkers that Rick has to deal with on his way to the town meeting. Michonne was right when she told Rick that “something would happen to convince the people they needed him so he didn’t need to make something happen.” Unfortunately for Rick he looks like a madman again with walker blood all over his face as he had a grisly kill after a zombie had a full mount on the constable. Dropping the walker in the middle of the meeting may have excused his personal appearance this time though.

The final minutes of this episode were a flurry of activity as Glenn came close to offing Nicholas, but showed mercy. Sasha was close to killing the preacher man for accusing her of misdeeds. Gabriel finally confessed to letting his flock perish. Rick’s people spoke up for him at the meeting since he was running late.

The climax of the finale was great. Drunk Pete finally went too far. Deanna was willing to let him physically harm Jessie, but her feelings changed when he did an impromptu throatotomy on Reg. She ordered Rick to execute Pete. Rick really had to mull it over….for like .0002 seconds, before blowing Pete’s brains all over the ground. Now that’s what I call a town hall meeting. A bloody police officer dumping a zombie next to a fire, the local doc accidentally slashing the throat of the greatest architect left on Earth, and the shortest time between judgement and execution ever.

The downside of the execution was Morgan seeing Rick and recognizing that all life isn’t so precious in reality. It’s hard to say how Morgan will react to this going forward. He was crazy the last time he and Rick were together and now he seems stable, but who knows where this story line will go.

Michonne is standing at the mantel where she had hung her sword. She decides to keep it strapped to her. Alexandria is a near perfect place, but it won’t stay that way without people ready and willing to defend it. Civilization can start again here. It won’t always be pretty though.

THE WALKING DEAD: Season 5’s Most Shocking Moments

0

Season five of “The Walking Dead” was possibly the best yet from the most popular show on cable TV. There were very few episodes that the plot didn’t move at a good pace, and there were plenty of surprises to keep us all hooked. The 16 episode season went from the demise of Terminus to a trip to a “nice little country church,” then wound up in a hopeful place called Alexandria instead of Eugene’s mythical safe haven in Washington D.C.

We are not too far away from the start of season six, although it will certainly seem like it. Surely we can entertain ourselves with some summer fun in the sun while we await the next gore and slaughter filled season which will start up in the fall of 2015. While we wait, we might as well take a look at ten of the most shocking moments of season five. There were plenty to choose from so the list took some whittling to get down to just ten.

walking dead season 5 most shocking moments 2015 tv

10. Beth sees Carol being wheeled into the same hospital she is being held “prisoner” at so that gives her hope. Beth is surrounded by cops that have survived due to sheer will, luck, and the motivation of legal rape in their facility. Carol’s arrival lets her know her group is looking for her.

9. Raining zombies was a pretty cool moment as Daryl and Carol wound up in a van that toppled over a bridge. Let’s ignore the fact that the van would have never landed on all four wheels perfectly. Let’s focus on the fact that after that there were walkers pelting the top of the van repeatedly as they simply walked off the bridge to follow their prey. Hearing them fall on the top of the van before seeing them was a very nice touch to a shocking scene. Zombie tip: Don’t go near a van teetering on the edge of a bridge, even if you are bad ass survivors like Carol and Daryl.

8. Poor Bob having his leg eaten right in front of him by the remaining Terminites. This was a horrible situation of course, but the guy got some satisfaction when he revealed they were eating tainted meat as he showed them his walker bite. Bob’s insane laugh was about as shocking as the cannibalism being displayed by Gareth and crew.

8. Aaron’s arrival to recruit Team Grimes led to a close to death encounter with zombies hitting their windshield faster than gnats on a road lined with chicken houses. Rick didn’t trust Aaron of course so his decision to go toward Alexandria at night nearly got them killed. Aaron helped save them all and earned some trust at that point.

7. Abraham nearly killed Eugene after the mullet wearing “scientist” revealed his lie about being able to find a cure for the pesky Walker Flu. A couple of punches to the head and a face fall into the pavement almost ended the run of one of the most hateable “good guys” on the show.

6. We knew Carol was capable of anything after she killed off a couple of sicklies at the prison back in the day. Her confidence has continued to grow to Ronda Rousey levels now. Her chilling threat to wife beating Dr. Pete as the two stood alone in his house showed the fearless woman into which she has evolved.

5. Deanna was calm and collected. She seemed to be an easy going lady with good intentions. She happened to be the mother of nut job Aiden though. And when he bit the dust she was close to losing it. She didn’t know what really happened so she wasn’t aware how dumb her boy was and that he was lucky to have lasted this long anyway.

4. Carol went full blown bad ass warrior with her destruction of Terminus in the season opener. If not for her, Rick and company would have been batting practice for the Terminus cattle herders, then later their supper. Once exiled, unfairly in my opinion, she redeemed herself in Rick’s eyes and after this rescue she could get away with any future murders that may be necessary to save the group as a whole.

3. The hostage swap at Grady Memorial Hospital went pretty smoothly….right up til the point that Beth’s brains exploded out of her skull. Dawn just couldn’t let peace happen and tried to change the deal at the last minute. Beth wouldn’t have it and stabbed the out of control lady cop, which resulted in Beth’s death.

2. The season finale was awesome, but Deanna’s husband had to be killed to make it shocking enough for a finale. Drunken Pete accidentally killed poor Reg at the town hall meeting. That led to Deanna changing her stance on capital punishment. She told Rick to kill Pete and he did so with a great deal of glee.

1. The fist fight between Rick and Pete was very good. The “broken window theory” paid off as both men crashed through the front window, carrying the brawl into the streets as the community gathered to watch the chaos. It was a even fight for a while, then Rick eventually wound up on top, but had to pull his gun when Deanna ordered him to be stopped. He went on a crazy rant about how the Alexandrians were weak and unprepared. This was the worst light Rick had been shown in, maybe ever. He went a bit overboard so Michonne, of all people, stepped in and cracked him in his damn head. I never saw that coming at all. It’s great when a TV show can shock me, since it is not an easy thing to do.

The Unfortunate Case of Soccer Great Victor Valdes

0

unfortunate case of victor valdes soccer news 2015 imagesSpanish champion in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, Copa del Rey winner in 2009 and 2012, Spanish Super Cup winner in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013, UEFA Super Cup champion in 2009 and 2011, FIFA Club World Cup winner in 2009 and 2011, and European champion in 2006, 2009 and 2011. If you have lost count, that adds up to a total of 21 prestigious first team trophies over the course of a formidable career that is still far from over.

These are the numbers of Victor Valdes, the number 1 goalkeeper of all the all conquering Barcelona of the recent past.

The custodian is still only 33 years old, prime age for goalkeepers – for comparison: Gianluigi Buffon is 37 and is still the number 1 for the Italian national team and reigning Serie A champions Juventus, Iker Casillas, at 34, is manning the goal for the Spanish national team and Champions League contestants Porto, 33-year-old Petr Cech is still keeping forwards at bay for Arsenal and the Czech Republic team.

However, Valdes is languishing on the bench of Manchester United and not just that his fall out – for whatever reason – with Louis van Gaal has been such that the goalkeeper has not even been allowed a locker in the dressing room this campaign, he is not allowed by the authoritative Dutchman to train with the first team – the goalkeepers’ practice sessions are planned as such that it never coincides with those of his Red Devils’ team-mates.

It is indeed a very sorry state of affairs for a goalkeeper who was the undisputed number 1 for a team considered to be the best ever in the history of the game. And he was absolutely essential for the side to function the way they did.

So what went wrong?

Towards the end of the 2013/14 season Valdes suffered that most dreaded of injuries, an anterior cruciate ligament tear, and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Crucially, his contract with Barcelona was to run out at the end of the season and he had made it clear well in advance that he didn’t want to renew and instead look for a different club in the summer.

Valdes was reported to have had a pre-contract with Monaco and join the principality outfit in the summer of 2014 but his injury and financial troubles at the club gave them a chance to renege on the deal. As a result, Valdes was now without a club and still recovering from his injury.

Valdes got a hand from an old pal in Van Gaal, when the Manchester United boss offered him a chance to continue his rehabilitation at Old Traffod and later signed him on a contract that ended at the end of the 2015/16 season. It looked to be a great deal for both the parties involved.

As things turned, there was a falling out in the dressing room between Valdes and the headstrong manager. And now he is again left ruing what might have been.

Can the US Draw the Line on Espionage Hacking?

0

can us draw line on espionage hacking tech images 2015China would probably scream to high heavens should they prove that they’re on the receiving end of a hack attack from the US. But for the US, the government doesn’t seem to have a clue. The hack on the Office of Personnel Management where information of over 21.5 million federal employees was stolen should have been a clear signal that whichever country was the culprit should be on the receiving end of an ICBM.

“We’re still working our way through that issue… It has to be something that’s communicated that generates… a sense of consequence…”

–U.S. Navy Admiral Mike Rogers

According to early investigations, many of the high profile hacking attacks the US has suffered originated from China. That the attacks were state sponsored, coming from hackers in the employ of the People’s Liberation Army. US Intelligence has even narrowed it down to one building in Shanghai. But of course, the whole thing can be denied by China and without solid evidence, the US can’t do much. I recall a discussion on CNN about US accusations of hacking by China but the Chinese representative just threw the accusation back, and what was supposed to be an intelligent discussion turned into an exchange between two children on which of them farted. China has repeatedly slammed further accusations of hacking.

Now, there hasn’t been any further high profile hacking news since the attack on the OPM. Either US government agencies beefed up their security or they stopped disclosing further attacks to the public out of embarrassment. But one thing’s for sure according to U.S. national intelligence director James Clapper, the attacks are ongoing.

“Cyber threats to U.S. national and economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication and severity of impact…What we could expect next is data manipulation, which then calls into question the integrity of the data, which in many ways is more insidious than the attacks we’ve suffered thus far…”

–U.S. national intelligence director James Clapper

Please sir, don’t give them any ideas. They might actually pull it off. We’re reminded of two movies with such a scenario. Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4) and Terminator: Rise of the Machines. Both movies detail what could happen should the US suffer a major hacking attack on its agencies, businesses and connected infrastructure. While the US won’t probably get nuked anytime soon, any manipulation of data in financial institutions such as the stock market could easily end up in disaster. If anyone decides to mess with bank balances, banks will no longer be trusted. Hackers could mess with American 401Ks and riots could ensue. The show Fear the Walking Dead also discussed and showed how quickly society can break down when communications and utilities go offline. It’s only a matter of time before someone actually does mess with the system or data, not just steal it.

So if some hostile country does such a thing, will the US consider it as an act of, or declaration of war? But wouldn’t it be too late by then if hackers gain access to power grids, weather data, military data or nuclear launch codes? Aren’t stolen federal employee data and defense contractor blueprints not sufficient grounds to go on Defcon 5? Someone needs to quickly draw the line and issue a very stern warning to any hostile nation not to mess with US systems and data. The country could sure use another George W. Bush post-9-11 statement and treat the next high-profile hack as a missile attack, then discreetly whack the offending nation where the sun don’t shine.

The threat of severe consequence to hacking is needed because everything will soon be connected once the cloud and the Internet of Things is fully realized. Hacking then could reach a whole new level. Everything can be used to spy on people or be turned off to cause chaos. Driverless cars could be controlled into Maximum Overdrive and actually hurt someone.

The holdup is because there must be definite proof that any hostile nation is truly the one responsible for a hack attack. The US can’t just use a satellite-based rail gun to vaporize that PLA building in Shanghai. As it stands, the government isn’t 100 percent sure because of differing degrees in confidence and China will just keep with its rhetorical denials. The investigators could have been misled by the hackers to wherever their IP trace led them. But if the trace was definite, what then? The big question is, is the United States of America still the badass country it used to be? Is it tough enough to issue sanctions to a country such as China and endanger an already fragile geo-political and economic status quo?

In cyberspace, the opponents are invisible and real-world finger pointing against a strong suspected opponent is probably the most that can be done. Like it or not, an invisible war may already be going on in cyberspace and the best the US can do is beef up its defenses against increasingly clever foreign (and domestic) hackers. Fortify the walls and build a keep. But the US can always bare its teeth when threatened. The US can still write a bill and draw that line, and like any intruder seeing the bared teeth of a large barking guard dog, foreign hackers might just think twice before crossing it.
