‘Steve Jobs’ Movie Review: Not So Applelicious (2015)

steve jobs movie review 2015 not so much imagesBased on the fact that I actually liked 2013’s Jobs, which got a 27% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I definitely had high expectations going into the new Steve Jobs movie, which currently sits at an 85% on the movie-rating site.

I find Steve Jobs’ story very interesting and was happy to see Hollywood give it another go so soon. Steve Jobs is a biopic based on the authorized biography written by Walter Isaacson. I have read this book and found that it did a great job of balancing the off-putting qualities of Steve with his innovative, and admirable traits.

The movie stars X-Men’s Michael Fassbender as Jobs, alongside other notable actors such as Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen and Jeff Daniels. Basically, the whole film is set backstage at various product launches (including one during Steve’s brief stint as the founder of NeXT).

Unfortunately, I was incredibly disappointed and underwhelmed by the movie. As the movie went from launch to launch, I felt there was no real central problem or story. Rather, the movie touched on different issues in Steve’s life very minimally, as it clearly was trying to cover a lot in a short amount of time.

One of the biggest differences between this film and the 2013 Jobs biopic was the focus on his daughter, Lisa. In the film, they address that Steve refused to believe he was the father of a girl, even when the paternity test revealed that there was a 94% chance that he was her father. In Steve’s mind, this meant that 28% of the men in America could potentially be her father as well. However, by the end of the film Jobs takes responsibility for Lisa and realizes his love for her.

While the story in the book surrounding Steve and his relationship is compelling, the way it was portrayed on the screen felt very superficial to me. It was as if the screenwriter was halfway done the script and realized they needed some kind of storyline to tie all of the mismatching scenes together. Therefore, they stuck Lisa in every once and while and ended the movie with a loving scene between her and Jobs. This made it feel like the usual Hollywood cookie cutter ending, and Jobs was far from that.

Unfortunately, Lisa’s character is not developed at all in the movie, so it is hard to feel connected to the story when she just pops up and says a couple of words here and there.

In terms of the portrayal of Jobs, I felt Michael Fassbender’s performance was highly overrated. Going into the movie I will admit I had high expectations as I remember how off-putting Ashton Kutcher’s exaggerated walk was in Jobs. However, now in comparison I much prefer Ashton’s version of Steve. I feel like Kutcher did a much better job at embodying Jobs’ quirkiness. After seeing Jobs, I actually felt like I had a better understanding of Jobs’ infamous charisma. In contrast, after seeing Steve Jobs I was left trying to put fragmented pieces of him together.

Another part of Steve Jobs that I found poorly done was the music. There were several times while watching it that I noticed they used tracks that were obviously meant to build up anticipation. However, nothing ever came out of these moments. For example, as Steve was preparing to give a presentation the music would build up and then all of sudden it would cut away from the scene. Before I knew it, I was once again watching Steve backstage at another launch listening to the same out-of-place background musical tracks.

While the majority of reviews for the movie have been positive, there are a few other critics that agree with me. Sean Burns of Spliced Personality said, “directed with patented flashy sleight-of-hand for no particular purpose by Danny Boyle, Steve Jobs is slick and empty. It looks and sounds like a movie, but it really isn’t about anything.” Basically, his last sentence sums up my thoughts. The movie has all the things you need: an all-star cast, an interesting story and a big budget. However, it failed to bring it all together and actually present it as something worth watching.

The movie failed to utilize any of the actors to their full potential. There was truly no character development for anyone other than Jobs (which I personally believe was done poorly). I mean, if you have Seth Rogen playing Steve Wozniak, it’s pretty much your obligation to give him some room to shine. Unfortunately, this was nowhere near the case.

While I admire that they tried to present a completely different story than the 2013 movie, I wish that they had focused more and realized that they can’t squeeze the man’s life into 2 hours. If they were going to tell the story of Steve and Lisa, they should have done just that. Not that and his rise and fall with Apple, his attempt at starting up NeXT, his relationship with Apple’s Board of Directors, his process when launching products, among far too many other things.

I am left wanting to see his story done the right way and unfortunately, I think I have a long wait ahead of me before another Steve Jobs movie comes out.

‘The Walking Dead’ 603: Thank You & Glenn Lives On Recap

the walking dead 603 thank you glenn 2015 recap imagesThank you for your service, Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun). Your good deeds were finally rewarded. More on that in a minute as we get to this “The Walking Dead” recap and update on Glenn’s fate.

Episode three of season six was on par with the opening two shows this season. And by the way, Rick is not a dumbass, Glenn. If you people would listen to General Grimes things would work out much better.

Not perfectly each time, but better.

This episode stayed on the same timeline as last week with the focus being on Rick, Michonne, and the rest of the herders, while the Wolves attacked Alexandria. The truck horn was blasting as the episode opened, and Rick instructs Daryl to keep moving forward to draw the herd away from the town.

As Michonne and crew head back to Alexandria, shotgun guy gets bit. No big deal. We don’t even know his name. But he is holding a shotgun and knows he has a death sentence so he could become volatile at any time. He stays sane somehow and actually helps the small group move forward.

Rick’s orders to Michonne and Glenn to leave behind any stragglers is overheard by Heath ( a guy with dreads who may get killed anytime since the townies are pretty expendable).

To Michonne and Glenn’s moral credit, they disregard these orders and try to save everyone even after some are injured to the point of endangering the group. Michonne even managed to keep herself from killing shotgun guy after he suffered a bite. He did have a pretty moving story about finding a new wife after SHTF with the rise of Walkers.

Nicholas and Glenn tried to create a diversion to keep the half herd that’s following them busy. Too bad the feed store had already been burned to the ground that they planned to blow up. Nicholas has come a long way from his coward days but starts tripping when they come upon the little town where he and Aiden had left team members to die.

Rick ends up with a busted hand but does make it to the RV, and he heads to…..hell I have no idea. I think he’s going to Alexandria, but his plan has gone so far off the rails, who knows.

Once the herd is upon Michonne’s group, the survivors have no choice but leave the girl with the hurt ankle. One thing to try and be as moral and heroic as possible. Quite another to attack 1000 zombies when the outcome is obvious.

If you’re wondering how such a slow group of zombies can catch the survivors, it’s simple. They are relentless. They don’t need to stop to rest, think, or talk things over. They have one thought….move forward. That’s the same one Rick has and is the only way to make it in this world.

We see the shotgun guy bite the dust as he got dragged down off the gate beside Michonne, who was lucky to make it over the gate. His sweet letter to his wife got trampled by the walkers as his body was torn and mashed against the metal by the horde of killers.

There is no beauty in this Walking Dead universe. No place for love notes. It is an ugly existence with only brief moments of goodness. Survival takes all the energy each survivor has inside them. Not many poets or artists will spring up from this Walker Age.

OK, now for the big scene that had Chris Hardwick acting like his dog got ran over just before Talking Dead aired. I get it, Chris. Glenn was a great character that tried to do right throughout the series and according to the after-show counselor had not killed another human ever.

I know one human Glenn should have whacked. Nicholas.

Had he killed Nicholas in the woods at the end of last season then Glenn would not have been knocked under the herd when old Dickless offed himself on top of that damn dumpster. Rick’s way is THE WAY, and because Glenn was softhearted, Maggie is now a widow. I doubt Glenn even had life insurance.

I know. It’s possible Glenn is still alive, and he was watching Nicholas’ guts being torn out on top of him. Possible, but unlikely. We shall see. If he is alive, I can accept that he made it out somehow. It’s not too far-fetched, I guess.

Glenn’s apparent death was not the show ender. We still got to witness Rick deal with the Wolves as they attacked him in the RV. I found it telling how Rick was informing Sasha and Abe how he believed those left in Alexandria could handle whatever attack was going on there. Keep in mind both his kids were there.

Most of his faith lay in Carol being there I am sure, and we saw last week that she did not disappoint.

How badass is Rick? He got jumped in a sneak attack by two Wolves and ended up killing both. Then for good measure he blasted the remaining Wolfpack with the assault rifle through the side wall of the RV. Nice move.

See, he didn’t try to figure out if he could reason with these animals. Rick didn’t think over his emotions before squeezing off a hundred rounds into humans that he couldn’t even see beside the camper. He had one thought, survive.

The people he killed were in his way and he removed them.

Rick’s way is THE WAY…..not forever, but for the foreseeable future. His lieutenants had best get on board with his orders going forward. Soft equals dead and each week the death toll is mounting. But Rick did look somewhat defeated after killing off those wolves that Morgan should have killed back in Alexandria. It’s been a while since he’s looked this downtrodden after the RV won’t start, and it feels like he’s getting close to having visits from Lori again.

GLENN UPDATE:

Glenn’s storyline has not ended yet as Executive Producer Scott M. Gimple has this to say:

“In some way we will see Glenn — some version of Glenn or parts of Glenn — again. Either in flashback or the current story to help complete the story.”

So, we have three possibilities for Glenn:

  1. He’s just plain dead, and there’ll be flashbacks with him.
  2. He’ll come back a walker, and Maggie gets to see him for the last time to say goodbye before Carol sticks a screwdriver in his brain;
  3. If you watch the scene again, Nicholas’ body falls on top of Glenn’s so it could be plausible that he’s walker food/shild for him. Will Glenn roll under the dumpster? How could he get out when there’s walkers on both sides of the fence?

The other big giveaway is that IMDB has Glenn still listed all the way through this season’s 2015/2016 finale. Glenn lives!!!

Khloe Kardashian Leaves Lamar Odom for Party & Danger Prone Jimmy Fallon Does It Again

khloe kardashian leaves lamar odom for kim kardashian baby shower 2015 gossipDue to Lamar Odom’s scary situation, Kim Kardashian cancelled her baby shower that was scheduled for last weekend. However, in the end the party ended up not being cancelled but rather moved to a later date, as the social media queen shared photos from the Troop Beverly Hills themed party she threw on Sunday.

A source tells E! News that Kim had originally cancelled the party indefinitely due to Lamar’s situation but was later convinced to have a celebration in honor of her second child since Lamar’s condition continues to improve. Khloe has been reported to not wanting to leave Lamar’s side until he can either walk fully again or shoot hoops, but those Kardashian’s can’t resist a party that will be turned into a media opportunity along with part of the upcoming season of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Naturally, they’ll be able to incorporate more of the Lamar/ long-suffering wife Khloe into the storyline.

Pictures from the gathering showed the guests all in matching pajamas while sipping on hot chocolate surrounded by camp-themed décor with a poster that read, “Troop Beverly Hills.”

Surprisingly, Kim’s sister Khloe was present for the baby shower. Khloe has been by Lamar’s bedside in the hospital since he was found unconscious in a Las Vegas brothel about a week and a half ago. Since he is continuing to improve, he was flown out to do the rest of his recovery in Los Angeles, which allowed for Khloe to be in town for Kim’s shower.

Along with the sisters, other guests included Kris Jenner, Caitlyn, Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Malika and Khadijah Haqq.

Kim announced her pregnancy back in May and revealed that it is going to be a boy. Sources close to the star claim that the baby is due sometime around Christmas.

danger prone jimmy fallon does it again 2015 gossipUnfortunately, Jimmy Fallon didn’t have too lucky of a weekend, as the late night host was rushed to the hospital after falling during an award ceremony.

Jimmy was accepting an award at Harvard University in Cambridge on Saturday when he suddenly tripped and fell. Immediately, he was rushed off to the Massachusetts hospital. A witness explained the accident, saying, “it was all part of the celebration in the street and some random girl kneeled down in front of him abruptly as he as turning around and he tripped over her because he didn’t see her.”

Another attendee caught the incident on video and shared it on Instagram:

The video shows Jimmy holding a bottle of Jaegermeister in his hand, as he turns around and trips.

The celebration was supposed to be a good time for Jimmy, as he was being honored by the university’s humor magazine – the Harvard Lampoon. The star was being awarded with the Elmer Award for Excellence in Humor – which marks the first time that the award has been given out this century. Unfortunately, due to a fairly severe hand injury he sustained earlier in the year, his fall had to be taken a lot more seriously.

Luckily, Jimmy was able to get medical attention quickly and was seen later at the party celebrating with his hand heavily bandaged.

The Ultimate ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer Every Fan Will Crave

ultimate star wars force awakens trailer 2015 images

Now that the ‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ white genocide brouhaha has died down, one huge ‘Star Wars’ fan has created the ultimate trailer combo for those of you without enough time to scour and find every teaser trailer and clips out there.

This version has three trailers strung together with some great clips from Comic-Con, and unlike many put together versions, this one is rather impressive in its seamlessness. It takes everything and put it into a logical order that builds up to some pretty incredible moments in less than four minutes. Like our ‘The Walking Dead’ season recaps in a minute we posted earlier today, this trailer hits all the sweet spots leading up to some Han Solo with Chewbacca moments.

The most recent trailer hit on ESPN during Monday Night Football, and on Monday, tickets went on sale. Naturally they were scooped up in a hurry, even while many had taken to Twitter to rant about a black actor having a lead role in the film. These people were quickly reminded of James Earl Jones voicing Darth Vader, but that didn’t shut them up. Thankfully, they’ve quieted down now.

Once again, another film from an American studio won’t open in our country first. ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in theaters throughout Europe and Australia on December 17 while Americans have to wait a day until it opens on December 18.

Set 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens finds a galaxy torn asunder by the ongoing conflict between the Resistance (formerly the Rebel Alliance) and the First Order (formerly the Empire). The film will have a cast of familiar actors, but they won’t share as much screen time as the new characters who will be carrying the saga forward.

The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendolyn Christie, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams andBryan Burk are producing with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Abrams & Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt.

Lamar Odom & Khloe Kardashian’s Idealized Fairy Tale

lamar odom khloe kardashian idealized fairy tale 2015 gossip imagesYou know your love is a match made in heaven when it can survive even the darkest hours. When your man’s condition is described as “yet to be determined” and you stand by his side despite the fact that you haven’t lived together since 2013, and you along with you family consistently trash his name publicly, your love has redefined the notion “to the moon and back.”

Yes, we have seen this scenario play out in the media these past two weeks in a “fairytale love story” starring Khloe Kardashian and her knight in shining armor Lamar Odom. They have shown us the true meaning of “forgive and forget” haven’t they? Right?

I mean, let’s look back to when it all started; which is fitting to see how their “love” has grown to a point where brothel visits, overdoses, transsexual love workers, hundred thousand dollar binges and 911 calls can’t even shake a couple who has shown time and time again they will do anything… to capitalize on their relationship.

From the televised event that started it all, Khloe and Lamar have been very open with their relationship. We saw how their love blossomed on her family’s reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and it was clear from the start that these two had something special. Even Kim, her sister who knows a thing or three about love (she’s been married thrice) said that her sister and Lamar are the true definition of finding your soul mate.

And it had to be love at first sight. It had, had, had to be because they married in September of 2009 just one month you hear me, one month, after meeting. Of course we were all partakers in their wedding ceremony because, like their spats and reunions, it was televised, and we were left thinking, “maybe I should spend that extra $3000 on my wedding dress.”

From there, as with any marriage, Khloe and Lamar dealt with the challenges that come with married life, which was intensified I am sure by the fact that E! gave them their own reality TV show not even one year after tying the knot. Khloe & Lamar (oh he’s so sweet he let her name go before his in the title) wasn’t just what friends referred to them as when going through their Christmas guest list of people to invite, it was a bonafide TV show, so that had to mean they were doing okay. But as we all know in life how the story goes, things are not always what they seem.

But that didn’t matter and damn it, now more than ever, it doesn’t matter. So Lamar has a little too much love for brothels, everybody has their guilty pleasure. And yes Khloe may sometimes get upset with him and vent to her mother and sisters who then turn around and exploit her need for sound advice into major storylines and headlines; who doesn’t have those kind of women in their families? Oh and as far as his drug addiction and all around carelessness because he was not able to receive the love of his mother the way he needed because she tragically died when he was twelve years old, that’s something you learn to drown with cognac and other reckless behavior. When you put their love that way and look at all that they have been through in those lenses, who wouldn’t want to make their marriage work?

What woman wouldn’t want to be there for a man that she repeatedly puts down and makes to look like a fool? What man wouldn’t want to be with a woman who creates paparazzi photo and video opportunities at his expense which not only paints him as a lunatic who can’t let his estrange wife go, but also makes him look like the big, scary black man that he tries to so hard to prove he’s not? I am telling you people, paying for your husband’s brothel visits on the regular is not that bad, because yea he’s getting it on with random women, but at least you know where he is. How many other wives can say that?

Khloe and Lamar’s love may be standing the test of time, which could turn out to be until the end of the next season of KUWTK, but can we not dwell on that. Can we not focus on the absurdity of these two buying into the notion that tragedy really can create or recreate the kind of love that lasts or that this may be the worst “in the heat of the moment” decision either one of them has ever made?

Life is not about truly enjoying marital bliss. It’s about doing whatever you have to in order to secure your financial freedom and legacy. And hell, if that means bearing another year with someone you just not too long ago showed, through your actions, you were afraid might hurt you, that’s okay because there ain’t nothing a little something called divorce can’t fix.

khloe kardashian leaves lamar odom for kim kardashian baby shower 2015 gossipKhloe has said that she won’t be leaving Lamar’s side until he’s walking, etc., so a miracle must have occurred as she left him to make it to sister Kim Kardashian’s baby shower on Saturday. Sources were telling media outlets that she would have to miss this blessed ode to ‘Troop Beverly Hills’ event, but let no man get between the Kardashian clan and a media opportunity.

‘Step It Up’: 105 Play Less, You Hot Mess Recap

step it up 105 play less 2015 recap imagesThis week on Step It Up, Traci and YCDT (Young Contemporary Dance Theatre) are pulling double duty.

It is a big challenge because the team is doing two separate events. They are dancing at Busch Gardens and another popular Miami establishment. These are opportunities for them to perform, so they are not competing, but each one is still important because it gives them a lot of exposures.  That means the pressure is really on and their time is stretched thin. Traci puts it on them just a little more because of everything that is at stake, and she has to see who can take the heat.

One of the girls having a hard time is Jakirah. Her issue is her feet, so she needs to work on it, and Traci lets her know in front of everyone. At the end of practice, Traci asks them to be patient because they are still getting their studio built. Because they have been going from place to place to practice, he has been hard on them but relief is not that far away.

Speaking of the studio, her husband Jean lets her know that a pallet was broken so their floor can’t be laid yet which means it’s going to take a little longer. So she goes off on him and even threatens him (as married people do). Traci blames him for things going wrong with contractors delivering it and that’s immature.

The next day at practice, she makes the dancers “bring it” and she does not let Jakirah slack. In fact, she’s harder on her. Traci grabs her foot and nearly breaks it (according to Jakirah). She tells them to “get right or get the hell left.”

To cool off and get herself together, she meets up with some of her girls at the gym. Working out is very important to Traci, and she puts them through. She doesn’t push them as hard as she does her dancers, because, you know, these are grown women, and they aren’t going to take her talking to them like she’s crazy.

A few days later, Traci holds cuts, the kids dance, and she watches in silence. After they finish the routine she calls the names of those who will not be dancing and surprise, Jakirah makes it. One of the guys, however, is a bit confused as to why he got cut. He actually gets back in the line with the dancers who will be performing and looks at Traci kind of sideways. She tells him “bye”, and he walks out slowly because he just can’t believe he won’t be dancing.

Before the competition, Traci meets with one of her friends for lunch, and she doesn’t want to think about anything dealing with dancing. Her girlfriend tells her that she’s crazy and too hard on her dancers. But she understands why. This makes Tracy feel good because it’s important to her for people to see why she is the way she is. She loves her kids and cares about them and for her, it’s about preparing them for the real world, whether they want to be a dancer or not.

“I’m tough on my dancers because of the real world.”

It doesn’t play so Traci doesn’t either.

Performance day comes, and the dancers are beyond the hype.  Traci tells them they need to keep their energy up because all 1500 of the people in attendance at the first gig are there for a great show.

They go on stage and are “dancing their behinds off.” They do a great job, and everyone is super proud of their work.

After they leave the stage, Traci let’s them know how great a job they did and reminds them about the need for their energy to stay just as high at Busch Gardens. They agree and are ready to put on another stellar performance.

As they head to their second show, the dancers are tired and noticeably slow. Traci doesn’t like what she sees because, in the real dance world, you may dance a couple times a day, every day, so they need to get their wind up.

At Busch Gardens, the parents as well the dancers are super excited because most of them have never been anywhere outside of “the hood.” Being at Busch Gardens is a big deal for everyone for so many reasons.

Traci goes off on them before they head on stage, especially the girls because they don’t look good. Their hair is messy, their makeup is not on point, and she tells them, “ya’ll look thrown together.”

They hit the floor and Jakirah leads the way. She is a great dancer! The rest of the team joins her on stage, and they do a good job. Not as great as their first performance, which more than likely is due to the back-to-back shows. But Traci is happy with what they did, and she releases them to have fun in Busch Gardens.

Catch Up On All ‘The Walking Dead’ Seasons In 5 Minutes

Run Through the First Five Seasons of The Walking Dead

So you’ve been living under a rock for a few years and have yet to see even a single episode of The Walking Dead. Or maybe you’ve been trying to earn a degree over the past five years or working on a weird invention, and that has kept you away from the most popular cable TV series ever. Or maybe you’ve forgotten a key scene or plot point and just don’t have the time to sit through a season box set, well we’re here for you.

Either way, it’s never too late to catch up with Rick Grimes and his band of zombie slaying, people executing (when need be) characters.

With the sixth season just getting started, it would be great for folks who are behind on the show to catch up in a hurry. The best thing to do would be to quit work and take a few weeks to watch each and every episode so you can enjoy the show along with your friends in real time.

What about those that can’t just stop working? Kids to feed. Selves to feed. House payments to make, etc.

Luckily for all you guys with limited time, the good folks over at Direct TV have made it quick and easy to get familiar with the first five seasons of The Walking Dead.

No hour long podcast or Youtube video for each episode you have missed. That would take too long clearly.

All you need is five good minutes to devote to some cool and funny animated videos that tell you everything you missed while the rest of the world was watching Walker wickedness every week on AMC.

That’s one minute per season. Surely you have a minute to spare in the next few days to catch up before episode three pops off this Sunday for season six. By the way, the first two episodes of The Walking Dead this fall have been nothing short of sick!

We’re talking the biggest zombie herd since the one that overran Hershel’s farm. The 2015 herd would run roughshod over the one that forced Rick’s group to head to the prison.

the walkind dead carl gets shot with rick 2015

No idea who Hershel is or why any group would seek out a prison to avoid a herd of undead humans? Good. Watch the animated videos so you can figure some of this stuff out.

I can’t tell you everything. I’m pretty busy myself.

carl kills shane walking dead 2015

I checked out the vids in my free time, which equals about five minutes a day. Yes, I watched while in the shower with a ziplock bag over my iPhone…a trick I learned in season three from Carol. Not really, but how would you know if you’re behind on the series?

I could tell you any lie about TWD just to jerk with you all. I wouldn’t do that, though. You’ve been through enough already, what with the ridicule from friends and family because they can’t discuss The Walking Dead with you since you have not seen a season yet.

I have watched the show from the jump, and I even benefitted from these animated catch up videos for seasons 1 – 5.

I forgot that Glenn was a pizza delivery guy when he made his debut on The Walking Dead. No idea why he was still delivering pizzas after the apocalypse. You would think the pizza infrastructure would have been the first to crumble.  Maybe Glenn was just too loyal to Dominos.

Also, I somehow thought that the hopeless scientist at the CDC was in season two or three. Turns out it was season one. He was not the most inspirational guy. Dr. Kevorkian may have been the guy’s mentor at some point.
I got to relive the appearance of the Governor. This guy was worse than a modern day politician. Hard to believe I know, but he really enjoyed torturing people and Walkers. Great dad though.

The Governor made it into two seasons but was eventually taken down by Michonne, the baddest samurai on the planet.

It may be hard for some of you to see animated Carol take things into her own hands when a plague (flu) hits the prison. Yes her actions got her exiled for a time, but what she did helped turn her into the most ruthless good guy ever.

Rick felt pretty bad about the whole exile thing after Carol saved his ass along with everyone else from becoming batting practice at a place called Terminus.

Please check out these cool below. Most of them even have some bloopers at the end with the audio.

Of course, there are spoilers in these clips, but they won’t ruin the show if you do ever get time to go back and watch each season in its entirety. They are just one minute long so not all the details are included.

Even if you have watched every episode, these vids will really help you remember key points that you lost since you first watched.

If you start watching right now, you should be caught up faster than it took Rick to decide to kill a certain surgeon with a hot blonde for a wife, which was right after he met him.

Don Cherry Sounds Off On Toronto Blue Jays Loss

don cherry sounds off on toronto 2015 sportsDon Cherry sounded off regarding the result from the 2015 American League Championship Series on Friday night, a series that was contested between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Kansas City Royals. Game six of the series, the only one that was competitive, has probably hurt Major League Baseball’s reputation a bit. At least it seems that way if you put some stock in the opinions of one of Canada’s best-known sports personalities.

The following tweets were part of a series made at the blue-check-marked and verified Twitter account for Don Cherry:

“I know the Blue Jays read my tweets…You got stiffed! Why? Because a Canadian…” (quote resumes in another tweet due to limitations) “…team in the World Series would be a TV disaster in the States. Blue Jays you can’t beat Kansas City and the umpires too.”

in other tweets, Cherry noted the missed call that would have tied game six of Ithe ALCS in the ninth; the well out of the strike zone pitch that was called a strike against Ben Revere as the game peaked, and an apparent fan-interference double that instead went in KC’s favor as a home run.

In the overall context of Cherry’s remarks, the reference to the Jays being “a TV disaster in the States” can only be taken to mean that Cherry regards the result/umpiring of game six being more in line with economics than any kind of fair play. In truth, it’s a point that has been made many times before.

Kendall Thu isn’t someone that sports fans will be too familiar with, but I guarantee that he knows a lot more about sports than your average nacho eater. A cultural anthropologist with Northern Illinois University, Thu and others argued in a 2002 paper entitled “Keeping the Game Close: Fair Play Among Men’s College Basketball Referees” that there was a foul-calling phenomenon in college basketball.

“Referees,” Thu claimed, “tend to keep nationally televised games close by calling a significantly higher number of fouls against teams that are ahead in the score. This results in more competitive games that maintain an edge of suspense for viewers. Interestingly, we don’t find the same pattern in games televised on a regional basis.”

Basically, when the stakes are high for advertising revenue in nationally televised games, the refs aren’t objective regarding the rules and codes of the game. Instead, Thu’s claim suggests, they are motivated to keep people from changing the channel as economic forces trump the rules of basketball.

Another example of economics seemingly trumping fair play could be taken from game six of the 2002 Western Conference Finals in the NBA. Up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, the small-market Sacramento Kings were handing it to the gigantic market Los Angeles Lakers big time. The Kings winning game six would have set up a less-than-marquee NBA Finals match-up between the Kings and the New Jersey Nets.

It was too much.

Los Angeles was awarded 27 free throws in the final quarter, and so many key players on Sacramento fouled out that Lawrence Funderburke had to come in. Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, in one of the most notorious plays, leveled Mike Bibby. For Kobe’s efforts, he was awarded free throws instead of what could have been called a flagrant foul against him.

Michael Wilbon of The Washington Post was covering the game: “I wrote down in my notebook six calls that were STUNNINGLY incorrect, all against Sacramento, all in the fourth quarter when the Lakers made five baskets and 21 foul shots to hold on to their championship” (emphasis added).

Los Angeles won game six. Los Angeles won game seven. Los Angeles won the 2002 NBA Finals, and everyone thinks the title reflects on how great Bryant is.

Years later in 2008 Tim Donaghy, a disgraced NBA referee, claimed that the game was fixed. Years after that, following many unsuccessful seasons and declining profits, the Kings wanted to move to the greater Los Angeles area – and why not?

The bigger your market, the bigger your fan base. The bigger your fan base, the more the league will want you to stay alive in the playoffs. That’s how you play NBA basketball, ain’t it? Or is it about the wind sprints, weight lifting, and teamwork still?

Of course the Lakers didn’t like the thought of Sacramento infringing on their market any more than people like chickens coming home to roost. So Sacramento remain in limbo, all because they were too small to make it, in my opinion – even if their players were the best that season.

I could think of many more examples of sporting results that I am suspicious of. But then how do you ever know if a bad call is crooked or just genuinely an error? At bottom, you don’t know but I would like to see a greater awareness on the parts of fans for the economics that surround sports, economics that could be determining or at least influencing the outcomes of games.

Regarding the 2015 ALCS, it is unquestionable that Major League Baseball’s reputation has just nose-dived in Canada. I don’t know what the long-termed effects will be but if Toronto fans assume that their team is disadvantaged, even with the best lineup, it can’t be good for the popularity of baseball north of the border. On the matter of whether the Royals got the nod to go to the World Series to avoid a “TV disaster” or whether they earned it, my personal feeling is in line with Mr. Cherry’s.

But regardless, all should agree that Major League Baseball is in need of improved consumer relations and enhanced officiating. Without the results of key games being respected by fans of both teams, interest could decline.

As far the 2015 Royals go, they are a team who barely beat the Houston Astros, who did not prove that they could beat the Jays, and who have been gifted a World Series coin-toss against the New York Mets.

In short, the asterisks for baseball are still mounting.

Pharrell Williams & Robin Thicke’s Blurred Memories

pharrell williams robin thick blurred memories 2015 gossip imagesEarlier this year, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were ordered to pay $7.3 million to Marvin Gaye’s family for their song “Blurred Lines.” In 2014, Marvin Gaye’s family filed a lawsuit claiming that Thicke and Williams hit song was a rip off of Marvin Gay’s 1977 “Got to Give it Up.”

According to the New York Times, the $7.3 million settlement is broken up between $4 million in damages, $3.3 million from the profits that ‘Blurred Lines’ has made and about $10,000 in statutory damages. This will all be paid to Marvin Gaye’s children, Nona, Frankie and Marvin Gaye III.

Although the lawsuit was settled months back, the story has caught wind again as The Hollywood Reporter posted the deposition videos of both Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams.

In Thicke’s video, he is asked if he was drunk and on Vicodin in a VH1 interview that was played in court. The singer replies, “I didn’t do a single interview last year without being high on both [alcohol and Vicodin].” Going on to say, that he was also under the influence of both while on The Oprah Show.

Thicke is also questioned whether he makes it a “habit” to be dishonest in interviews, in which he answer, “when I give interviews, I tell whatever I want to say to help sell records.” The deposition also shows Thicke confessing that he doesn’t consider himself an honest person.

Needless to say, I don’t think his deposition played in his favor.

Arguably, things got even worse in Pharrell’s deposition. The successful musician and producer quickly becomes combative when questioned about his musical abilities.

The ‘Happy’ singer is asked what chords are used in a typical bluegrass song, in which Pharrell bluntly replies, “you should check it out…I’m not a teacher.” The opposing lawyer continues to try and get an answer out of him, but Pharrell simply responds, “I’m not here to teach you music.”

The lead attorney for the Gayes goes on to point out that Pharrell has never received any formal education when it comes to music. However, the singer states that he can read musical notation though he is unable to write it or know the pitch simply by reading a note. Unfortunately, this doesn’t look all too good considering he is the mentor for aspiring singers on The Voice that can do much of what he admits he is unable to do.

The deposition continues, as the lawyer asks Pharrell to name two musical notes. However, he seems unable to do so and repeatedly replies, “I’m not comfortable with this question.” Adding, “I can’t answer you at this time.” Cringe worthy to say the least.

Basically, every question regarding musical notation, such as timing, scales and notes, Pharrell refuses to answer, as he “is not comfortable.” On multiple occasions, he tells the lawyer to refer to the musicologist in the room.

As they begin to dive into the similarities between ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘Got to Give it Up,’ Williams admits that he understands how people can say they hear a connection between the two songs. However he goes on to point out, “silk and rayon are two different things, they just feel the same.”

Next, he explains, “I did not go into the studio with the intention of making anything feel like, or sound like, Marvin Gaye.”

Unfortunately, he gets himself into some hot water when the lawyer brings up an interview where Pharrell says that he was channeling his inner Marvin Gaye when coming up with the percussion for the song. Evidently, this statement contradicts his earlier statement saying that he never thought about Marvin Gaye or ‘Got to Give it Up’ during the creation of ‘Blurred Lines.’

Pharrell makes a point of saying that now that he looks back he feels he encompassed some Marvin Gaye-like groove when creating the song, but reiterates that during the process he did not channel Gaye.

Unfortunately, Williams’ argument and subtle distinction between what he says is true (in hindsight he was influenced by Marvin Gaye) and what the opposing parties are trying to prove (that he was influenced by Marvin Gaye) didn’t hold up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the $7.3 million settlement is record-breaking for a copyright infringement suit. Following shortly behind it is the $5.4 million Michael Bolton had to pay for using the Isley Brothers’ ‘Love is a Wonderful Thing’ in his own 1994 song ‘Love is a Wonderful Thing.’

NFL Wide Receiver Fantasy Sleepers Week 7: Allen Hurns & Donte Moncrief

nfl wide receiver fantasy sleepers week 7 2015 imagesIf you’re like me and don’t really pay attention to player bye weeks when drafting, you may be stuck in the unfortunate position of having half your starts off this week. Time to make some waiver claims! Here are few guys that may be available in your league and worth giving a go this week:

Allen Hurns, Jacksonville Jaguars: Hurns doesn’t have much fantasy value from week to week being the No. 2 option on the league’s worst team, but the Buffalo Bills have been fantastic at locking down teams’ top receivers. A.J. Green, Odell Beckham Jr, Kendall Wright, and Jarvis Landry all struggled to get going against Buffalo, and so I can’t imagine Allen Robinson breaking the mold.

As a result, the torch goes to Hurns. With four games in a row with a touchdown, Hurns is starting to become a relatively consistent threat. If Blake Bortles is forced to go his way even more this week, it could turn into a great thing for desperate fantasy owners.

Donte Moncrief, Indianapolis Colts: T.Y. Hilton is still the number one guy on the Colts offense of course, but Moncrief has emerged as a solid second option. In fact, Andrew Luck threw to Moncrief 11 times this past Sunday against the New England Patriots.

Moncrief finished with 69 yards and a touchdown in that game, marking the third game this season in which he put up double digit fantasy points.

This week the Colts are playing the New Orleans Saints and their fantastic secondary. Rob Ryan is probably the best defensive coach in NFL history… Yes, I’m kidding. Hilton and Moncrief will both have more than their fair share of success this weekend.

The Saints have given up five receiving touchdowns this season and allowed four players to get 10 or more points against their sad defense. Luck may be slipping, but you can still expect a pretty big game from him this week, making Hilton, Moncrief, and even Dwayne Allen all worthy starters for Week 7.

NFL Fantasy Football Week 7 Start & Sit: Todd Gurley & Sam Bradford

nfl fantasy football week 7 start sit sam bradford 2015 imagesTime to set those lineups again, boys and girls. The San Francisco 49ers embarrassed themselves to kick off Week 7, but there will be plenty of other teams making fools of themselves before the weeks over. Just don’t run a Chuck Pagano fake punt and no one will remember it by Wednesday.

Anyways, here’s some help picking players in both your season-long leagues and on DraftKings:

Star of the Week—Todd Gurley, RB, St. Louis Rams: Todd Gurley wasn’t even supposed to make his NFL debut until this week after tearing his ACL last season, but instead he has four games under his belt heading into the matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

So Gurley’s got his feet under him, and he’s playing the Browns. It’s the perfect storm.

Gurley put up 146 yards on the Arizona Cardinals and 159 on the Green Bay Packers, both on the road. Now he’s at home against the Browns. You do the math.

Todd may not have found the end zone yet, but the yardage he’s putting up is more than enough to help you win. Maybe he’s been saving up all the TDs for the home crowd this week.

Don’t Do It—Sam Bradford, QB, Philadelphia Eagles: Bradford actually looked really good against the New Orleans Saints, and people were talking about how he finally turned the corner. Apparently they don’t realize just how bad the Saints defense is.

Bradford looked trashy again this past week against the New York Giants. His team may have won, but 280 passing yards and three interceptions to one touchdown doesn’t really help anyone much from a fantasy standpoint.

This week Bradford will be lining up across from the Carolina Panthers defense, so if he thought the Giants D was tough, I’m not sure what he’ll do this week. The Panthers have eight interceptions this season and have only given up five touchdowns, so Bradford definitely has his work cut out for him.

The Eagles have a bye after this week, so may Bradford can get his act together during the off week. Until then, it’s probably better to keep him on the sideline.

Soccer Teen Silenced

0

soccer teen silenced 2015 sportsThe CBC ran a story about both a young Vancouver Island teen and her mother stuck in a bit of a dilemma. The teen is named Freyja Reed, her mother’s name is Anissa Reed and, according to Duncan McCue writing at CBC.ca, the former “has two great passions: soccer and wild salmon.” Of course, since life just can’t be easy, with those “two great passions” the 14-year old adolescent has been thrown into a situation where her soccer team is being sponsored by Marine Harvest, “the biggest operator of open-net fish farms in B.C.” (CBC.ca).

If you’ll pardon the horrible pun, here’s the meat of the story:

“When Anissa Reed objected to youth teams being branded by a fish farm company, the association told her Freyja could have her fees back and find another club.

Reed says the closest Tier 2 club is over an hour’s drive away. Instead, she reached an agreement with the Riptide that Freyja wouldn’t have to wear Marine Harvest gear, appear in promotional photos, or participate in fundraising activities” (CBC.ca).

However Freyja not having to participate in certain events/activities raised questions from teammates regarding her exclusion. The Reeds also made a Facebook page “created to oppose the Marine Harvest sponsorship” (CBC.ca). The result was a gag order and that caught the attention of a law professor at the University of British Columbia.

According to Margot Young:

“She is being muzzled. To say: ‘You give up soccer or you give up free speech’ is outrageous.”

The problem, however, is that free speech laws in Canada do not apply to sports teams or corporations. I think that means that they can give the Reeds an ultimatum like the one Ian Roberts, a spokesperson for Marine Harvest, gave:

“You can find another program to play in or choose to do a different sport,” says Roberts.

In regard to the first alternative, I think Anissa Reed would object on the grounds of travel expenses and time. She and her daughter live in the Comox/Courtenay area which in itself is an urban area; however it is also a fair stretch between urban centers in those parts.

I’ll get back to that problem but in regard to the second option that Roberts offers, he really does not show any sensitivity to the situation. Freyja is “PASSIONATE” (emphasis added) about soccer and she wants to try and get an education with it. You don’t just drop your passions in life without causing an implosion and Roberts’ remark comes across as both non-chalant and very selfish. For a company spokesperson, you might actually expect better.

Even if you support a “love-it or leave-it” position let’s not forget that we are talking about a 14-year old in this case. You can take this or leave it: when you are supporting people of that age and around it you should be doing so out of pure philanthropy – not to tattoo them with your logo to advance a profit agenda.

I do realize that such an expectation is too much to ask of a corporation however that Marine West are NOT interested in supporting youth soccer should be very clear. It follows that, to the extent that people figure that out, what seems more like an attempt to improve their corporate image by seeming to support youth soccer has failed. In this case they should have just tolerated the dissent, let the 14-year old play without prejudice, and the issue would probably just die. Instead they have managed to come across to Joe/Jane Public as far less dis-likable.

But for young Freyda Reed, I think she’s about to learn that you can’t escape the times you live in. Even if she dropped out of Marine Harvest Riptide and drove an hour away to another soccer club, what if they needed similar corporate sponsorship too? Maybe she can hope for a corporate sponsor that she doesn’t feel directly opposed to but, as she plays more, it would probably just be a matter of time before something else she opposed poked its head into her life.

Now I’m all for bursting bubbles but I still think 14 might be too young to force someone into the world of corporations and their ruthlessness.

“You can find another program to play in or choose to do a different sport,” was a nauseating comment.

I think youth sports in Canada would be better if they were ALL run through the school systems, including the less popular sports. At present a lot of sports are, like basketball, volleyball, and football. However I would like to see all sports grow in schools – with an appropriate increase of funding to support the extra staff/facilities.

But, while that’s the future I hope for, it does nothing to solve a current problem. My message for Freyda would be to just keep playing soccer for Riptide, delete the Facebook account, get that education, and use it to work toward what you believe in. That won’t help you out today but trying to escape the times you live in won’t help either and corporate rule over top of youth sports – and a lot else – seems to be unavoidable right now.
