NFL Week 13 Winners & Losers

0

NFL Week 13 Winners & Losers 2015 cam newton imagesCam haters thought Carolina was finally going to get dropped, but Newton was just teasing the Big Easy and his haters. The other MVP candidate, Tom Brady, wasn’t so lucky as his crew lost their second game straight, this time to lowly Philadelphia.

Seattle is rolling like never before, but let’s not get carried away over back to back weeks of superb offensive play from the Hawks. OK, let’s get carried away. They killin it!

Onto the winners and losers. Just four games left in the regular season. Get yo popcorn ready…along with the beer, Rolaids, 3-D glasses, and a cheat sheet to help you determine where your team will land come playoff time.

Atlanta fans can skip the last item.

Check out Chris Maurice’s Hottest Sports Memorabilia List for that sports fan in your life.

NFL Grown Man of the Week: Russell Wilson.  The kid has been on fire the past two weeks. He accounted for four more touchdowns yesterday, making it nine in the past two weeks.

The Seattle QB has his team primed for another playoff run while the rest of the NFL takes notice. The other playoff contending coaches in the League best get plenty of sleep the next couple weeks. They won’t get much should they see Seattle in the postseason.

NFL Child of the Week: The ref who gave Green Bay an extra shot at a Hail Mary against Detroit on TNF. Touching a face mask is not grabbing it. The flag could have been waved off. The Lions got a sack on the biggest play of the game only to have Rodgers kill them with a gift from the zebras.

Winner: Ben Roethlisberger and his receiving corps destroyed the Colts on SNF. Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant looked like they were in a track meet. Big Ben and his offense made it appear they were playing a junior college defense as they racked up over 500 yards on the Indy defense or lack thereof.

Loser: Adrian Peterson had just 18 yards in the debacle against Seattle, leading him to call out his coaches for getting taken to the woodshed by Pete Carroll and company. Seattle is not Atlanta AP. Can’t just run through the Hawks like water my man.

Winner: Cam Newton and company let New Orleans feel good about themselves at home for a while, then ripped their heart out with just one minute left in the game. Newton and the Panthers are undefeated still, with only four games left on their regular season schedule.

Loser: Matt Ryan. Atlanta dropped their fifth game in a row after the offense was less than stellar again, relying on the kicker to supply most of the points. Ryan had the ball with around a minute to play at the end and not shockingly threw it to the opposite team.

Winner: Marcus Mariota was a stud against the Jaguars, throwing for 268 then running for 112. He put his Titans ahead with an 87, yes 87, yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Loser: The Browns. Blasted by Cincinnati 37-3, Cleveland may be the winner of the #1 draft pick next year. They might even take a QB, who’s interested in football more than Instagram party pics.

Winner: Philly beat New England somehow after looking like the dogs of the NFL the past two weeks.

Loser: The special teams coaches and players who will have to deal with Bill Belichick this week after they cost New England an embarrassing loss at home to the Eagles.

Winner: Julio Jones spoke out about his lack of shots in the red zone. “We practice throughout the week throwing jump balls, throwing fades, throwing all these little things. But when the game comes, you never know what’s going to come up.”

Jones has failed to score in the past four games. Mix in one TD for him in each of those games and the Falcons would still have a good record instead of being a .500 team at 6-6.

Loser: Dan Quinn. Atlanta’s coach better learn quickly how to make adjustments in game. Being great at analyzing games on Mondaymorning is useless, the game is over. It appears Quinn can’t even make the adjustments week to week. If he were capable, he would have fixed the issues that have led to his Falcons losing six of the past seven games.

Winner: Brandon Marshall dragged his Jets to the victory over the Giants. The wrong receiver in New York is getting all the attention as the media just adores Odell Beckham, but Marshal has been more consistent, and his team is actually winning games.

Loser: Tom Coughlin, who may lose his job as Giants head coach. Late game collapses won’t be the best bullet points for a resume going forward.

Winner: Fans of the AFC. The NFC is a boat race with Carolina rolling up the conference. With two straight losses by injury depleted New England, the Pats are tied with Denver and Cincinnati at 10-2, setting up very important games as the season winds down.

Loser: Matt Hasselbeck had to come back down to earth eventually. It happened against the Steelers in prime time as he threw two early picks and never got on track. Just when I had him on each of my DraftKings rosters.

Winner: Jameis Winston may not have ran for an 87 yard TD like his counterpart rookie Mariota, but his third down conversion on third and 19 was just as big a play for his team.

Loser: Kickers everywhere this year who are missing extra points right and left. The rule change on the PAT has been great for the game, doing away with the automatic kick of the past. It’s even getting in the heads of kickers on field goals. The usually reliable Robbie Gould missed a FG at the end of regulation that could have given his Bears the win over San Francisco.

Winner: Thomas Rawls got over 100 yards again. The kid is fantastic and just makes Seattle more dangerous as the playoffs loom. If Lynch does come back, Rawls still needs to be used somehow.

Loser: Jeff Fisher who admitted to the St. Louis media that he’s out of answers when it comes to his offense. His QB, Nick Foles is worse than the awful offensive line that’s supposed to be protecting him. And Todd Gurley has no chance to produce with the defenses only worry being the rookie sensation.

Agnieszka Radwanska Season Recap & 2016 Preview

Agnieszka Radwanska season recap 2016 preview 2015 tennis imagesPoland‘s Agnieszka Radwanska has been a force on the WTA Tour for years. Major career highlights prior to 2015 included making the Wimbledon 2012 final and making the semifinals of the 2014 Australian Open. In 2015, Radwanska had a very rocky season – one where she seemed to be riding a roller coaster from start to finish.

Her roller coaster ride of a season started in a deep valley: the start to her 2015 season was not impressive by her own standards. In Sydney and Melbourne Park, for examples, she failed to make deep runs. Those weak results were followed poor performances in Fed Cup matches, events that saw her lose to both Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova.

However, perhaps Radwanska’s bad form to start the season remained a bit below the radar due to the calibre of the competition she had faced. After all, Kuznetsova and Sharapova combine for seven Grand Slam singles titles. But further losses would come for Radwanska in numerous events, including dropped matches to peripheral players like Heather Watson, Annika Beck, and Monica Niculescu.

Then, the former Wimbledon finalist’s roller coaster of a season started to peak for the first time on the grass court surface. With a run to the final of the Eastbourne event, Radwanska hinted that she was getting back to her best tennis. She followed that performance up with five match wins at the All England Club, finishing that tournament as a semifinalist.

However, just when she started to look as dangerous as ever, Radwanska’s roller coaster hit a free fall. The North American summer hard-court events did not yield a single victory over a Top 20 player. Even in the smaller events, like Stanford and New Haven, Radwanska failed to produce a strong result. It all culminated at the 2015 US Open where Madison Keys knocked out the former World No. 2 in an uncompetitive straight-sets match.

Looking as though her brilliant play on grass was just a flash in the pan, out of the blue, Radwanska’s roller coaster of a season re-peaked. She won a title in Beijing by defeating three Top 20 players, including teenage sensation Belinda Bencic. A semifinal loss in Beijing seemed only a minor setback a little while later before Poland’s top player claimed another title in a different event in China.

A short time later, her entire roller coaster season culminated in the most prestigious title of her career at the 2015 WTA Finals in Singapore. With wins over Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, and Petra Kvitova, Radwanska may have sounded alarm bells off that she will be a force for Grand Slam titles during the 2016 season – a point that others have noted.

According to a WTA article entitled “Grand Slam on the Horizon for Radwanska?” the victory in Singapore could have significant implications:

“Radwanska is the 19th woman to win the WTA Finals, and 17 of the first 18 all finished their careers with at least one Grand Slam title. The only exception? The 1982 WTA Finals winner, Sylvia Hanika. And anyone who didn’t have a major when they won the WTA Finals had one within three years.”

Radwanska’s best Grand Slam events have been the Aussie and Wimbledon. With the 2016 Australian Open just around the corner, her hot play of late certainly makes her a player to watch.

But then with the way she dipped and peaked in 2015, she’s also a player that could suffer an early-round loss, even in big events. Clearly, Radwanska’s challenge is to maintain her form from start to finish during 2016. If she is able to do that, then another appearance in a Grand Slam final would not be surprising. Nor would it be surprising to see her win more than three titles in 2016, the number she won during the 2015 season.

All in all, she is one of the few players that is at least capable of achieving the World No. 1 ranking.

‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ 805 Cynthia’s Kicky Cool Off

real housewives of atlanta 805 cynthias kick cool off 2015 images“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” continues to bring the drama and this week, and it came in all forms.

Picking up right where they left off last week, we see what goes down between Porsha Williams and Cynthia Bailey, and it ain’t pretty. The infamous kick felt all around the world sends Porsha over the top, and a guy literally has to lay on top of her to stop her from kicking the former model’s ass.

As the chaos ensues, everyone rushes to see what’s going on and of course, Kenya takes Cynthia’s side because, “she cannot control herself, you can’t have a simple argument.” She takes her friend to the bottom of the boat while Shamea and Porsha are escorted off and taken back to shore. Cynthia doesn’t want to speak to anyone but Peter. She calls her husband and begs him to come home, and he does.

The next day, as everyone tries to make sense of what happened, each lady has her own version of what happened on the boat. Even Phaedra has an opinion, and she wasn’t even there. Kenya blames Porsha; Kandi Burruss thinks it’s all stupid, and Kim is just all kinds of confused. But none of their thoughts really matter because they weren’t the ones in the fight.

So let’s talk about the ones that do. Porsha shares with her mother the wounds she received from the altercation on her stomach and express how through she is with Cynthia. While she is willing to have an open dialogue about the situation, she doesn’t believe that they can be friends. Because she knows how it feels to have marital problems, she was doing her best to be there for her, but when Cynthia popped off on her, it was pretty much the end of whatever relationship they had.

In the meanwhile, Peter is back in Atlanta and right by his wife’s side. It’s good to see him come through for her. Cynthia tells him her side of the story and he says “it’s never going to feel good when you hurt somebody” to which she says, “I didn’t say I hurt her, I didn’t even know I hurt her, I hope I didn’t hurt her you, think I hurt her?” Peter keeps it real with his wife and tells her, “you kick somebody you hurt them” and she just doesn’t want to hear it. It is clear that Cynthia feels bad about what happened, and her denial and defensiveness shows it. She knows that she hasn’t been herself and realizes that she overreacted. Peter tells her straight up that all this stuff she is feeling is not about Porsha so,“When you see her later apologize to her.” He wants to talk about where she is, and they do.

Kenya Moore, who seems to be the thrower of parties this season, in an attempt to bring the ladies together once again, gives a brunch to “reunite and maybe get this whole thing back on track.” And because she has the answers, she meets with Porsha first to make sure they are on the same page.

Now, remember that Porsha and Kenya have had their issues in the past which is why she feels she is the perfect person to help rectify the situation but their history is also the reason Porsha has her up her guard. The day of the brunch, they have a conversation about what happened on the boat before the other ladies arrive and Porsha tells her that she didn’t like the way Kenya treated Shamea. Kenya feels like she’s blaming her for what happened and they have a tense moment in which Porsha tells her, “I don’t need you to speak to me like that because for one I don’t trust you.” Kenya tells her “that’s unnecessary” but I beg to differ Ms. Moore. A person can only deal with another from the standpoint of their experiences with them, and that’s what Porsha is doing. Nonetheless, Kenya is the bigger person, de-escalates the situation, and they move on.

After they iron out their issues, the other ladies show up, and there is an expectation in the air and not the good kind. Once everyone is seated, Kenya makes an announcement about the purpose of the brunch and gives Porsha and Cynthia an opportunity to speak to each other in private.

During that conversation, for the first time in a long time on the show, people take responsibility. They both have an open heart about hearing the other out on the situation. While they talk it out, back at the table, Kandi tells Kenya about herself.  “Sometimes Kenya I feel like you’ve always been good at pointing out what the other person has done, but you’re not good at pointing out what you do yourself.” Kenya takes offense to this and says, “I’m glad she has such an advocate over here because I would really like for you to advocate for me when you think I’m in the right, and you never do that.” They have a back and forth, but Kenya quickly ends it because, “Fighting with a pregnant woman is just not good Karma.”

In the end, Cynthia and Porsha make up and walk back into the branch to the applause of the rest of the cast. They move forward with the expectation to be cool again.

In the words of Kim Fields, “That’s how you get your grown woman on.”

WTF? Johnny Manziel Back To Starter For Browns Week 14

0

wtf Johnny Manziel moved back to Starter for Week 14 2015 nfl imagesJohnny Manziel’s 9 Lives with the Cleveland Browns Continues On

How do the boneheads of the NFL stay employed? Why is bad behavior overlooked by management? Just ask Johnny Manziel, who is now back to QB1 status.

I’m sure J-Football has learned his lesson Mike Pettine.

Cleveland’s coach moved Manziel to third sting hell after the second year QB appeared in a video online showing him drinking it up at a party. The Browns went back to Josh McCown who ended up hurt so they had to let Austin Davis start in week 13 against the Bengals.

Davis was ineffective of course, so Johnny Manziel is back! That exclamation point should be a simple “period.” Nobody with a lick of football sense thinks Manziel would have fared much better against Cincinnati. The Browns gained just 68 yards rushing in Sunday’s game, and the defense barely slowed Dalton and company down.

The Browns are not a good football team and they are grasping at straws. Manziel is just another straw.

The fact that he is getting another shot at starting is just a lesson in the reality of pro football. You can act like an idiot and keep your job, maybe even start. That is, as long as your team needs you.

Manziel has not impressed anyone, yet his team has no options. McCown is out for the year. Austin Davis clearly doesn’t have the confidence of ownership or else they would just let the kid play out the rest of the year so Johnny Football could learn his lesson.

Mike Pettine may be a hard ass who would like to keep Manziel grounded from his Xbox the rest of the year, but the head coach has a boss too.

Think this emboldens Manziel? You bet your ass. He can have a domestic dispute with his girl, act like a drunken fool on video for the world to see, and be mediocre on the field, yet still be trusted to run the Browns offense.

They have no choice. It’s just the reality of pro sports.

The history of sports is littered with bad guys getting chance after chance to earn big money while getting cheered for their efforts on the field of play. Johnny Manziel hasn’t killed anyone like Leonard Little, but he sure hasn’t conducted himself like a professional. His conduct has been unbecoming of an NFL quarterback especially.

Manziel is just another example of the unbalanced scales of on and off the field issues. A player’s on the field value will almost always outweigh what they do off the field. If Manziel was a backup on the Patriots’ team, he would have been cut this year. Not because Belichick and Robert Kraft have a higher moral standard than the Browns’ management. J-Football would be gone because he wasn’t needed. Tom Brady is the solid starter so Manziel would be expendable. Same situation if Manziel was with Green Bay, Cincinnati, and Carolina.

The only reason Manziel still has a roster spot is because he is on an awful team with average quarterbacks around him, one of which is injured. He is able to act a fool, and keep his job. And now gets to be the starter once again.

Manziel should seize this opportunity. Not to be the best he can be on the field, but to take his partying to the next level. He should go out and party however he wants.

Do it nightly if he feels like it. Maybe even rent a party bus for the next road game in San Francisco. What’s Mike Pettine gonna do? The head coach’s punishment has no teeth.

The Browns need little Johnny on the field. That may change next year if the Browns can get lucky in the draft, but for now Manziel has the leverage.

If you’re wondering why Manziel has gotten away with his actions all this time, likely since high school, it should be obvious. The guy has just done what he was allowed to get away with. As long as he was valuable on the football field he could afford to go off the rails a bit in the real world.

His value is diminishing fast in the NFL though and he’s going to have plenty of time to party as soon as the Browns have a better option at quarterback.

For now though, Manziel is back to QB1. No lesson learned from his grounding. It’s not like he did some community service over the past couple weeks to atone for his public screw-up.

He just sat back and waited for Cleveland to be in need of his services once again.

‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ 1104 Kylie’s Growing Pains & Tyga

keeping up with the kardashians 1104 growing pains 2015 imagesOn tonight’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians “All Grown Up,” we got a taste of what it’s like to house a pregnant Kim Kardashian and a behind-the-scenes look at Kylie’s extravagant 18th birthday celebrations.

The episode began with Kourtney and Khloe calling up Kylie after they found out she hadn’t officially invited them to her party. Kylie reveals that she hadn’t made her birthday plans public yet, but assumed that Kourtney and Khloe wouldn’t have any conflicting plans anyways so she could tell them last minute.

Shortly after, Kim is talking with her mother Kris about her weight gain from her second pregnancy. Kim reveals that she has gained 25 pounds and is only “halfway there.” Kris reminds her that she gained a lot of weight with North, but was able to get into the best shape of her life afterwards. Kim tells Kris that she is not too worried about the weight gain this time around, but she is starting to doubt her body will be able to bounce back when she gets pregnant the third time. Kris is shocked and exclaims, “Number three?! Whoa! Can we just slow down and have number two?”

Meanwhile, Kylie is in Malibu visiting her father Caitlyn’s house. While there, Caitlyn asks Kylie what her plans are for her birthday and even offers to throw her a party at her house. However, Kylie confesses that she has been avoiding planning a big party as she has anxiety about the tension in Kris and Caitlyn’s relationship. While there, Caitlyn gives Kylie a crop top and matching underwear set that has Caitlyn’s face printed all over it. Rightfully, Kylie is weirded out but refuses to give the set back.

Back in Calabasas, Kris and Kim have some conflicting views over Kim’s plan to move into Kris’ house with her husband Kanye and daughter North West. Kim tells Kris that she is planning to have her second child while still living in her house and, therefore, needs to convert one of the extra rooms into a nursery. Needless to say, Kris is not too pleased with her daughter taking over her house once again.

Later in the episode, Kris returns home with three of her friends. To her surprise, she walks in on Kim having an impromptu exercise class in the front lobby. Shortly after, Kris vents to her friends about Kim having no appreciation for Kris letting her stay in her home. She goes on to say that she will most likely need to set some concrete boundaries if things continue to go this way with Kim.

In an attempt to smooth things over, Kris heads over to Malibu to meet face-to-face with Caitlyn for the first time. They show a scene, which was featured in I Am Cait during the summer, except this time from Kris’ perspective. While there, Kris tries to get Caitlyn to understand why she was so upset over the Vanity Fair article, especially the part where Caitlyn claimed that Kris didn’t treat her well in their marriage. However, Kris realizes that Caitlyn is even more stubborn than Bruce and will most likely never show empathy towards the situation.

Although things didn’t go too well while she was in Malibu, Kris still invites Caitlyn to a family dinner at Nobu to kick off Kylie’s birthday. At first, things were a bit tense at dinner, as Kris couldn’t help but make a few passive aggressive comments about the fact that Caitlyn was late for the dinner. In confessional, Kylie admits that this tension was exactly what she wanted to avoid. However, Caitlyn finally shows up, and the dinner goes well. During dinner, Caitlyn even goes on to explain how she now uses the women’s washroom. This surprises some of the family members, but Khloe pipes in “well she is wearing a Tom Ford dress.”

Later on in the dinner, the family begins discussing Lamar Odom. At the time, Khloe was waiting for her divorce to be finalized from Lamar (although this has changed since the taping of this episode). Khloe explains that although filing for divorce was hard, it was the right thing to do considering Lamar wasn’t making any positive progress. Kris goes on to show Khloe her text conversation with Lamar, which upsets Khloe. In the texts, Lamar asks Kris if Khloe is dating James Harden, in which Kris replies that she doesn’t know.

This proves the marketing brilliance of the Kardashian family as they are slowing building up this storyline with little mentions of Lamar Odom here and there. Last season, the only mention he got was in the finale, which many said was responsible for his drug bender at Dennis Hof‘s Love Ranch. We can only imagine the storyline they will create with Khloe being the Mother Theresa of the bunch, etc. I’ll be very curious to see if they have footage of him in the hospital as that would easily show them for what many think they are.

The last few minutes of the episode show Kylie’s big birthday celebration held at Bootsy Bellows. For the first time on the show, Kylie admits that she is dating rapper Tyga and gets affectionate with him. She ends up getting a Ferrari from Tyga, who she claims is the most “selfless” person she has ever met. These shows are always feeling dated since the family loves having their life play out daily in the press, so we all know that the two are on a hiatus again.

You can catch the next episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians on Sunday, December 13 on E!

Next Week:

Khloe and Kendall head off to Mexico City to visit the big cat rescue foundation. Meanwhile, Kylie makes her first club appearance as an adult in Montreal.

This Week in MMA: Solid Action, Interesting Announcements

Although it wasn’t quite as packed with news and developments as last week, this week in MMA still had some exciting fight action and announcements.

Let’s take a look at what the week of December 6th brought MMA fans!

The UFC Announces Two New Events

The UFC has announced that it will be returning to London and Pittsburg in 2016.

Michael Bisping and Gegard Mousasi will clash in the main event of the London card, in what should be an outstanding battle between two of the most technical strikers in the sport.

Several other contests were announced for the card as well, including:

The high-level Dagestani product Rustam Khabilov against TUF Smashes winner Norman Parke, undefeated Englishman and Tristar-product Tom Breese versus Japanese submission specialist Keita Nakamura, and “Mr. Finland” Makwan Amirkhani against the ever-improving Mike Wilkinson.

Especially with the strength of the main event, this is a card that won’t be missed by many (although it isn’t popular to say, most fans—regardless of whether they want to see him win or lose—are interested in the results of any contest involving Michael Bisping). The local anticipation of the card is evidently great as well, as the event’s tickets sold out in just under half of an hour.

The only downside to these developments is that UFC Fight Night: London won’t go down until February 27th—nearly a quarter of a year from its announcement! Nevertheless, it should be exciting when it does roll around.

In a more surprising announcement, the UFC revealed plans to return to Pittsburg for a Fight Night event, one week prior to UFN London, on the 21st of February. Unlike the London card, most of the fights have yet to be announced, although an intriguing middleweight contest between Derek Brunson and Roan Carneiro has been revealed.

The last time that the UFC visited Pittsburgh was nearly half of a decade ago, for UFC Live 4: Kongo vs. Barry.

WSOF 26 Loses Co-Main Event Star, Tyrone Spong

Tyrone Spong just can’t seem to stay healthy.

In a development that was equally as upsetting for fans and the WSOF, multi-sport competitor Tyrone Spong was injured in training and forced to withdraw from his scheduled co-main event tilt against  Jake Heun. Heun is now scheduled to meet late-replacement Clinton Williams on the preliminary portion of WSOF 26.

Spong has voiced his interest in competing in three combat sports—kickboxing, boxing, and MMA, and although he’s achieved success in each, perhaps the time has come to give some thought to picking and sticking with just one of them. The talented thirty-year-old injured his leg in his last kickboxing contest against Gökhan Saki, and the injury may not have transpired by chance; competing against the best that each sport has to offer may place too much strain and pressure on any athlete’s body (although he has largely faced non-considerable boxing opponents).

Spong and his team probably know what’s best for him as an athlete, but it’s certain that many fans would like to see him healthy and competing—especially in MMA or kickboxing—in the near future. Competing in three separate sports simply may not allow for that.

UFN 81: Dillashaw vs. Cruz, Loses Beneil Dariush and Dennis Bermudez, Gains Chris Wade

Beneil Dariush has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled contest with Mairbek Taisumov due to injury and has been replaced with Chris Wade.

Additionally, Dennis Bermudez was forced to withdraw from his scheduled contest against Maximo Blanco at UFN 81, due to a staph infection.

While temporarily debilitating, the infection shouldn’t take too long to heal; hopefully Bermudez will recover and find a spot on an upcoming card.

A replacement opponent for Maximo Blanco has yet to be announced.

Bellator 147 Delivers in Final Event of 2015

Bellator booked some solid fights for its final event of the year, and although the night wasn’t terribly action-packed, it did feature some solid fights between very skilled competitors.

Bellator 147’s main card kicked off with an enjoyable light heavyweight bout between durable veteran Virgil Zwicker, and the ultra-explosive Brian Rogers.

In his move up to light heavyweight, Rodgers was more relaxed and attentive to his techniques—and it showed. Zwicker had some success on the feet, but “The Professional Predator” maintained a cool demeanor that wasn’t found in many of his previous fights. He blasted Zwicker with a takedown in the second round and followed up with ground-and-pound that ultimately created the opening for an arm-triangle finish.

Next, in a rather one-sided affair, one of Bellator’s up-and-coming stars, Adam Piccolotti, dominated Mario Soto en route to a second-round rear-naked-choke finish. Soto showed off his impressive toughness and ground game, but it was clear early on that Piccolotti had the definitive grappling advantage.

The win improved the undefeated lightweight’s record to seven and zero.

In what was considered by many to be the fight of the night, Derek Anderson bested Patricky Freire once again, albeit by the narrowest of margins.

In the first round, the technical boxing of Anderson—along with a well-timed takedown—allowed him to win it pretty convincingly.

Similarly, but even more clearly, the second round belonged to Pitbull, as he landed some solid standing techniques and dominated the fight on the ground.

The third round was very close, and was also the reason for the split decision, as Pitbull began to slow down and allowed Anderson back into the fight. Both men had some success, and it certainly was a tough round to call.

It was an exciting contest to watch, however, and both men have bright futures in the cage—Bellator and otherwise.

In the co-main event, Georgi Karakhanyan fell to Daniel Weichel by way of a unanimous decision.

This wasn’t a back-and-forth war in any way, but many fans (myself included) enjoyed watching and were impressed by the crisp and technical boxing of Weichel, who was simply too unemotional (as he promised to be, especially after his last loss) and effective for Karakhanyan to find very much success on the feet—by calling him in to brawl or otherwise.

As was mentioned in the broadcast, Karakhanyan suffered an ACL injury just nine months or so ago; three of these last nine months were spent training for this fight, so it’s possible that his knee isn’t fully healed.

Whatever the case, hopefully, we get to see both men competing inside the cage again soon, as they are some of Bellator’s top (and fun-to-watch) featherweight athletes.

The main event’s result surprised essentially nobody, as Josh Thomson dominated Pablo Villaseca, before securing the second-round TKO finish. It was a bold move for Villaseca to take the fight, and he may very well have some Bellator success of his own in the future, but the bout played out essentially as one would expect, given that Thomson was technically superior in every facet of the game.

Overall, Bellator 147 was a solid card—and one that many fans appear to be underrating.

Next week should make up for the comparatively barren fight-card landscape of this week and then some, as the UFC will hold three events—including UFC 194—on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (UFN 80 on Thursday, TUF 22 Finale on Friday, and 194 on Saturday). Enjoy the fights!

College Football Week 14 Winners & Losers

college football week 14 winners losers 2015 matt johnson imagesWinners & Losers From College Football’s Week 14

It is one of the Saturdays that every true college football fan looks forward to each year. Championship Saturday 2015 did not disappoint. The day started with two good ones – the first-ever American Athletic Conference title game and the Conference USA championship. It ended with the Big Ten and ACC titles and left many wondering what will happen when the College Football Playoff field is announced. Here are the winners and losers from Week 14, championship week.

WINNERS

Dino Babers capped off his two-year stint at Bowling Green with a 34-14 win over Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship on Friday night. Babers was then named the new head coach at Syracuse. RB Travis Greene rushed 29 times for 183 yards, and two touchdowns and QB Matt Johnson continued his impressive season with 235 passing yards and two scores to take his season total to 43 TD passes. Babers high octane offense and 18 wins in two seasons with the Falcons will hopefully usher Syracuse into a new era.

Trailing 28-21 in the third quarter, Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty led the Hilltoppers offense on a scoring spree that netted 24 unanswered points and a Conference USA championship in the process. It was the school’s first title, a 45-28 win over Southern Mississippi. Doughty ended the day 34-of-52 for 410 yards passing and three touchdowns.

The Texas Longhorns had a hard time beating anybody this season but somehow managed to beat Oklahoma and Baylor. The Longhorns jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead before winning 23-17. QB Tyrone Swoopes completed 12-of-19 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown for Texas. The victory gives the Longhorns and head coach Charlie Strong a 5-7 record for the season.

The American Athletic Conference held its first conference title game, and 19th-ranked Houston outlasted 22nd-ranked Temple, 24-13, to claim the championship. The Cougars, now 12-1, will enjoy a New Year’s Six bowl bid, their first major bowl game in 30 years. Junior QB Greg Ward Jr. only threw for 88 yards, but he ran 17 times for 148 and two touchdowns. Temple had trouble running the football (just 98 yards on the ground) but ends the season with a 10-3 record. Add in 9-2 Navy and 9-3 Memphis, both of whom were ranked at some point during the season, and the AAC had quite a year.

LOSERS

Banged up Baylor was held to season lows, 17 points, and 479 yards, in its season-ending loss to Texas. Head coach Art Briles was down to his fourth QB after Chris Johnson got hurt. The Bears threw for just 84 yards. They did, however, run for 395, but it wasn’t enough. The loss takes 9-3 Baylor out of the Sugar Bowl.

Is the Florida offense really that bad? Well, yes. Head coach Jim McElwain’s unit is simply terrible. Against Alabama in the SEC championship game, the Gators rushed for minus three yards. Not only did they not gain any yards; they went backward. QB Treon Harris is just not much of a threat. The Gators only touchdown came on a punt return. That makes it two games in a row that the Florida offense has not scored a point.

After all the turmoil surrounding the Illinois football program at the beginning of the season, the Illini looked like they might take their 5-7 record to a bowl game. That all changed when Georgia State upset Georgia Southern to finish the season 6-6 and take a bowl spot that was expected to be available. San Jose State, Minnesota, and Nebraska are all 5-7 but have higher APRs and will likely fill those extra bowl slots.

The ACC title game was one of the most entertaining championship games, one which top-ranked Clemson won 45-37, but the end of the game will continue to be talked about for all the wrong reasons. ACC officials blew a call that could have made a difference in the outcome of the game. Trailing by eight, North Carolina attempted and successfully recovered an onside kick with 1:13 remaining in the game. For some reason, officials threw a flag against the Tar Heels claiming they were offside. Every replay angle clearly showed that North Carolina was, in fact, not offside. It was not the first display of poor officiating by ACC officials. Remember the Miami kickoff return against Duke? That crew was suspended as a result of their missed calls.

Jose Mourinho: Eden Hazard is returning to his form of last season

0

Jose Mourinho Eden Hazard is returning to his form 2015 soccer imagesEden Hazard was unarguably the best player in the Premier League last season. The Belgian forward set stadiums alight with his performances as Chelsea clinched the Premier League title in May.

Hazard’s form in the opening matches for Chelsea this season took a big hit, but the Premier League Player of the Year 2014/15 is returning to his best. According to Jose Mourinho, Hazard can play as a 9, 10, 7 or 11 and thus he is one of the most important players in the Chelsea line-up.

“His performance last week was good in every aspect,” Mourinho told reporters. “He got the feedback. Even written feedback because we analysed his performance in great detail and I thought it was good for him to get it in a written document with graphics on every aspect.

“That was unusual, yes. It had everything. Lots of everything – my feedback, my vision, numbers, figures, stats. Stats, for me, mean very little on their own. It was so impressive he needs that feedback and to know his efforts were recognised by myself.

The Portuguese manager believes that it is a crucial time for Hazard with the European Championship in France next year.

“He knows how good he was. Hopefully, he can build from now. The good is coming. The decisions, the Euros at the end of the season and the Champions League next week. The Premier League is crucial for us too – every point important because we want to finish top four. He knows how much we need him.

“With that attitude and dynamic, playing with the ball and attacking them, he can play in every position. He can be 9, 10, 7 or 11.”

The Blues boss hailed another Belgium international as he makes his return to the Chelsea squad for the game against Bournemouth. Thibaut Courtois will give a major boost to the struggling English champions as they aim for the Champions League spot.

“Courtois is Courtois. To miss Courtois for a couple of matches, we knew we had good protection in a good goalkeeper [Asmir Begovic],” he concluded.

According to Mourinho, Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world and the team certainly missed him in his absence. The former Real Madrid and Inter boss believes that Chelsea are again in a very good position, and they can climb towards the top half of the Premier League table.

“But to lose your best goalkeeper for three months and 19 matches in all competitions. 19 matches without the best goalkeeper in the world. It was hard for us. Now we are again in a super situation by having the best and a very good one.”

Chelsea are currently 14th in the Premier League table after 14 matches. The West Londoners face Bournemouth on Saturday. Their next Premier League encounter, after their Champions League tie against Porto, will be against Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City. It will be interesting to see how the troubled defense of Chelsea will fare against the Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy.

Pellegrini: Manchester City striving to bring best players in the world

Pellegrini Manchester City striving to bring best players 2015 soccer imagesAfter 14 game weeks, Manchester City are leading the Premier League table and with Chelsea seemingly out of contention, Pellegrini’s men are being labeled as the favourites to clinch the league in May.

Manuel Pellegrini believes that the club needs to attract the best players in the world to challenge for the major trophies. He also stated that the competition for top players is quite intense and is mainly among five or six teams in Europe.

“If you want to be the most important people in football or one of the most important, you must be able to bring all the best players here,” he told reporters.

“We are always trying to do it, but it is not easy because there are a lot of clubs, five or six, that can do it also.

“That depends on the style, in the work, but it is important not to give an advantage in the options you have to buy those players.”

The Chilean manager is convinced that he has enough quality to end the season with silverware.

“The squad for this year is ready,” he added. “We are not thinking to replace for the amount of injuries we’ve had.

“It was a decision last year because we have the three players injured a lot of times before, so we didn’t want to take the risk to finish the year in the same way.

“But in that year Kelechi was one-year younger, so he was not the player he is today. We had Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic.

“Jovetic and Kun had a lot of injuries in the first half of the season and Dzeko also. That’s why we decided to bring Bony.

“I think, in this case, the fourth [striker] should be Kelechi.”

Manchester City brought Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling in the summer transfer window, and both these signings have settled very well at the Etihad. De Bruyne is arguably the best player at the club, considering his form of late. The Belgian forward was named Bundesliga Player of the Year for his performances with Wolfsburg last season. Sergio Aguero, who has missed many games of injuries this season, is impressed by De Bruyne.

“I’m really happy because I think the club did a great piece of business bringing Kevin in. You are always happy when a quality player arrives, and he is certainly that.

“The few chances I’ve had to play alongside him have been encouraging because we started to get an understanding of how each other plays.

“He is a great player and it’s really important he settles in and shows us what he can do. He’s also a great lad off the field as well so I’m looking forward to playing alongside him again.”

Manchester City will be a force to be reckoned with when all their players are fit. Not many teams in the Premier League have such firepower, and they will certainly be hard to beat. The Citizens seem to be ready to progress to the later stages of the Champions League this season.

Justin Bieber Not Ready To Hand Selena Gomez Over To Niall Horan & Kylie Jenner Happy

justin bieber not ready to hand selena gomez to niall horan 2015 gossipOn Friday night, it was reported that Selena Gomez was showing some major PDA with One Direction member Niall Horan. Both Gomez and Horan performed earlier in the evening at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball and then headed off to Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s 35th birthday party together afterwards.

So while Selena was showing some clear signs that she was ready to move on from her relationship with Justin Bieber, it appears as though Justin is not ready to do the same.

On Saturday, Justin posted yet another throwback picture of him and Selena on his Instagram. Along with the photo of him and Selena holding hands while dressed up, Justin captioned “crazy throwback.”

Justin and Selena were in a rocky relationship for about three years. However, they have both expressed publicly that they are actively looking to move on from the relationship. And while Selena is practicing what she preaches, Justin is having a hard time doing the same.

kylie jenner happy for jaden smith sarah snyder 2015 gossipIn other relationship news, sources close to Kylie Jenner claim that the 18-year-old is a big fan of her friend Jaden Smith’s relationship with Sarah Snyder. This comes as a surprise, as many speculated Kylie’s short-term break up with Tyga a few weeks back was due to Kylie’s close relationship with Jaden.

A source revealed, “Kylie knows Jaden is very into Sarah and respects it and likes her as well. Jaden and Kylie are still really good friends, and that is it. They will always care for each other but at this point in their lives, they just want each other to be happy.”

Sarah, 20, and Jaden, 17, sparked romance rumors back in September when they were photographed being affectionate with one another at New York Fashion Week. Since then they have been relatively open with their relationship, as they appear on each other’s social media pages.

Although Sarah’s relationship is going well, the same cannot be said about other aspects of her personal life. In mid-June, Sarah was arrested for allegedly stealing a Hermes Birkin Handbag, worth nearly $16,000. Documents state that Sarah actually took the bag back in February, but was charged with felony grand larceny in the summer.

Atlanta Falcons Indepth Review vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Atlanta Falcons 19  Tampa Bay Bucs 23

If you’re looking for discount jerseys, now is the time to get your Atlanta Falcons gear on the cheap. You may even get paid to accept a shipment of Matt Ryan jerseys in order to make room for on the shelves for elite QBs.

This one hurt folks. Atlanta drops another division game, making them 0-3 for the year. Their playoff hopes are effectively shot to hell and who’d want to see em in the postseason anyway? It would be a wasted spot.

After winning their first five games, Atlanta is now 1-6 in the past seven weeks. That’s hard to do, even for this franchise.

This game in Tampa was not a thing of beauty. Ryan was maybe a bit better than rookie Jameis Winston in the passing department, but Winston did more in order to get the win. Winston scored on the ground to start the game then came up with a huge run to get a first down on 3rd and 19!

A drive that ended up the difference in the game.

Devonta Freeman was largely ineffective on the ground but did gain over 100 yards in total offense. It just wasn’t enough for the Falcons to get a much-needed win, however.

Matt Ryan did move his team in position to win in the fourth quarter, tossing a touchdown to Nick Williams with ten minutes left in the game. Up to that point though it was kicker Shayne Graham who was responsible for all the Falcons’ scoring. Just 12 points headed into the fourth quarter puts too much pressure on the defense.

That pressure resulted in a Jameis Winston touchdown pass to Mike Evans with just 1:39 left to play in the game. The Bucs led by four, so it was on Matt Ryan and company to answer in a hurry.

That went about like the past few weeks with Ryan throwing the ball away to the defense. Ryan tried to force it to Julio over the middle, and the ball was picked by Tampa’s Lavonte David. Ryan must have figured he’d save Falcons fans some time this week and got the pick out of the way so we all could get back to our Sunday plans.

Ryan had the following to say about the game ending interception. “I shouldn’t have made that throw. … That wasn’t the time to do it.”

Hope that makes you Falcons fans feel better. For Carolina fans like myself, I have to keep moving forward.

The Birds will travel to Charlotte next week for their scheduled beating against said Panthers at 1 pm. Hide the women and children. That game will be rated “M” for “Massacre.”
