Is Johnny Manzeil Too Good For the NFL?

I heard a strange phrase last week from the mouth of a well-respected NFL analyst on the evil four letter network. Chris Mortensen stated that Johnny Manziel may have too much heart for the NFL. Having a lot of heart is usually a compliment for any sport, especially in the NFL where you are required to absorb big hits from even bigger players. But in this case it was a negative comment when concerning Manziel. Mortensen said that he thought the former Aggie QB had more heart than brains, meaning that his style of play would lead to injuries in the NFL.

Johnny Football does have a ton of heart, not to mention a load of talent. He showed that every time he suited up in college. And he is definitely not a dumb guy, he knows that running around like a wild man can get him blindsided at any time. I halfway agree with Mortensen, in that Manziel will have a hard time making himself play a safer version of his game. It is in his nature to do what is necessary to make a play, on every single play during a game. However, if he does have a good head on his shoulders, and any sense of self preservation, he will quickly adapt to the NFL.

One good example of a quarterback that may have too much heart for the NFL is Mike Vick. Manziel should watch some tape on him if he wants to see what not to do on a regular basis. Vick was one of my favorite players to watch. He was just unbelievable on the field. The consequences of his ability to make plays with his legs though were a pile of injuries over the years. Had Vick been a bit more careful with his body and more selective about when to take off on the run, then he may have avoided many of those injuries.

One current NFL quarterback that Johnny Manziel should look to for a style of play that he could replicate is Russel Wilson. The Seattle QB knows when his team needs him to run for a first down, but he also knows when to fold and just punt the ball away. Wilson is one of the best QBs in the NFL already, and he is not without heart at all. He just knows what is best for his body in the long run, and what is best for his team.

If Manziel can adapt quickly to the speed of the NFL and can have the self-control to only take chances when absolutely necessary, he should be a very good pro QB. He will need to evolve fast though, or else he could get jacked up in his rookie season. The young quarterback is about to be drafted by a team that expects their fortunes to be changed by the guy. He can meet those expectations if he lets his brain control his heart a bit more on Sundays than he did on Saturdays.

How To Make Fantasy Football League’s Hate You

If you are a newbie to the world of NFL fantasy football, first of all, welcome aboard. It took me a while to get into it and now I am glad I did. It makes the games better, which was hard for me to believe, since I already loved the NFL. Competition keeps us on our toes and gives us incentive to pay closer attention to the games. It is one thing to cheer for your favorite team each week, but having your fantasy team destroy your opponent makes each Sunday a little better.

If this is your first season playing fantasy football, there are a few things to keep in mind to prevent people in your league from loathing you. These are not mandatory rules, just some friendly guidelines to keep you from being ‘that guy’ or ‘that girl’. There are just a few unwritten rules about playing fantasy football that will help you avoid being left off the invite list next season. So I am going to write them down for you now.

7. Don’t offer ridiculous trades that you are hoping someone is dumb enough or drunk enough to fall for. It won’t work, for one. And as a bonus you will be remembered as the annoying guy who thinks he is playing with a bunch of idiots who would fall for such a trade.

6. Try to communicate with your league members at least some during the season. Text messages, emails, or message board posts show you’re engaged in the fantasy season.

5. Do not forget to set your line-up! This is vital to you getting invited back next season to the same league. There is nothing worse than seeing your fantasy opponent’s lineup include two or three guys who are injured or on bye weeks. That shows them that you do not care about the league at all. And even worse, is if you luck up and beat them on weeks you forget to set your line-up. Death threats could ensue in this scenario.

4. Joining a couple of NFL fantasy football leagues is fine. I would say three is enough though. Anymore and there is no way all these leagues can hold your attention….unless you have no job, no family to spend time with, and no need to ever leave your house. I am sure there are some folks who can juggle seven or more fantasy teams, but that would take more time than running a real NFL team.

3. This one won’t make your league members mad at you, it will just make your playing experience less fun. Make time to do a live draft. Setting the auto picks is just not the same. Draft night is the best part of fantasy football in my opinion. I know everyone is super busy these days, but you can carve out an hour or two for draft night.

2. When you are drafting your team, you don’t need to use the entire clock to make your selection every time. I can see using every second to decide between Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. However, you should have a good idea mapped out about the players you want and not just wing it each round.

1. Don’t name your team the Falcons or the Bears. Try to be original and do a catchy name, as that is part of the fun as well. These may lead you in the right direction: Megatron’s Johnson, Revis and Butthead, and InGorious Staffords.

2014 NFL Draft: Which Teams Will Benefit Long-Term?

Which teams stand to gain the most from the 2014 draft, which is almost upon us?

I do not mean which team will benefit the most in the long term. That is an article for about three years from today. The teams I want to discuss are the few teams that can get better by leaps and bounds in 2014 with the help of the draft. Believe it or not, a team can make such a rebound from a poor season in 2013 with the right draft picks or trades involving some picks.

I will go ahead and list a few the hapless teams that could not be helped by 14 draft picks in the first round. ClevelandSt. LouisJacksonville, and Oakland are stuck in ruts that will take some time in which to dig themselves out. I hesitate to list Oakland, as I do not wish to find a spiked shoulderpad wearing freak waiting at my front door later today. These teams can get better through this upcoming draft, but the turnaround won’t come very quickly. That is not to say it is impossible for these teams to have a better year than in 2013. But if they rebound in a big way, it will not likely be the result of a fantastic draft.

There are two teams that have the best chance to greatly increase their chances of a deep playoff run in 2014 through the draft. Those franchises are the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans, both of which had terribly disappointing records in 2013.

They had high expectations going into last year and for many different reasons just could not get on the right track in 2013. But their overall team is still of high quality and should be able to get back to the level of 2012, that made them both Super Bowl picks by many prognosticators. Since both teams had awful seasons last year they have top ten picks, with the Texans at #1 and the Birds at #6.

The Texans have had a problem getting over the hump of going from regular season winner to a high performing playoff team, in large part because of their QB, Matt Schaub. And after the wheels really fell off last year, Schaub was dropped like a hot potato. If the Texans end up taking the right rookie quarterback in the draft, they could easily get back in the playoff hunt. That is a big if, but some young QBs, like Russell Wilson of the Seahawks, have helped their teams almost immediately. Johnny Manziel or Blake Bortles could be the prescription for change that theTexans need. They just have to pull the trigger on the right guy.

Atlanta went from a few yards away from a Super Bowl appearance in 2012, to getting beaten up on a weekly basis in 2013. Their offense was still in tact, but they just could not seem to get everything together like they had the prior season. The defense was atrocious, just like in 2012, but the offense was not able to make up the difference this time around. They need lots of help on defense clearly, but a great pass rush would cover up many deficiencies. That pass rush could come in the form of one Jadeveon Clowney. The Falcons are rumored to be in talks to get high enough in the draft order to get the former Gamecock. Whether they can pull it off remains to be seen, but they made a similar move a few years ago to snatch Julio Jones up. Clowney can’t fix the entire Falcon defense, but he can cause enough chaos for opposing offenses that the other positions will benefit from his presence.

Most teams will not receive a grade on the draft for a couple years from now. But the Texans andFalcons have a chance to get an A+ this very season. They both are poised to make another playoff run. They just need the right guys with their first picks, and a little luck.

Best & Worst of Celeb-Owned Franchises

When it comes to celebrities and sports, there’s ample overlap. Not only are top athletes celebrities in their own right, but Hollywood also loves to depict sports heroes in the cinema.

Major athletes like Jim Brown have even made a successful transition from the gridiron to the big screen. Though there’s yet to be a Hollywood bigwig to make it in sports, celebrities have found other ways to get in on the US’s major leagues: investment.

Musicians, actors, and other big-name talents have been pouring resources into their beloved teams for decades. In fact, they’ve even started investing in video games and eSports. However, over the years, some franchises have benefitted greatly from a Hollywood touch. Others… not so much.

Mark Cuban & the Dallas Mavericks

In 2000, business tycoon Mark Cuban bought a majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks, which had many scratching their heads given the team’s losing streak.

However, Cuban diverted crucial resources that saw his franchise take the 2011 NBA Championship title. Today, punters familiar with NBA betting odds throughout the season may see the Mavericks as the rival of nearby Houston Rockets, which leads to a few highly-charged games every season. However, long-time fans of the NBA likely associate the Dallas franchise with their Cuban-led rise to infamy.

Usher & the Cleveland Cavaliers

In 2005, Usher was at the top of his R&B career. However, he wanted to pivot toward business. In the end, Usher’s 1% stake in the Cavaliers franchise cost him a cool $9 million in investment—however, there’s likely been quite a bit of ROI for the singer-turned-investor.

In 2016, the Cavaliers took the NBA Championship with stars like LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. It marked the first Cavaliers league title since 1964 and skyrocketed the value of the Ohio team.

Will Ferrell & LA FC

In 2016, the comedian and actor Will Ferrell took an opportunity to invest in the MLS’s LA FC, an expansion team hoping to share LA Galaxy’s success. He wasn’t the only big-name investor either. Soccer legend Mia Hamm and NBA all-star Magic Johnson also helped back the young LA-based franchise.

Since then, the team has managed to take their Western Conference title and make it to playoffs, both in 2019. Though it’s no championship win, they did manage to vanquish the LA Galaxy for their Western Conference title.

Miami Dolphins

As one of the NFL’s most laughable franchises, it’s difficult to understand why so many celebrities have chosen to own stakes in the seemingly hopeless team. Sure, it’s easy to love an underdog just like it’s easy to love the sunny, jovial city of Miami, but there’s no ROI on a failing franchise.

Since the Dan Marino and Don Shula days ended, the Dolphins may be lacking in silverware, but certainly not investments. Celebrities like Serena and Venus Williams, Fergie, Jimmy Buffett, and Gloria Estefan have all donned Dolphins jerseys and signed checks.

Jay-Z & the Brooklyn Nets

Back in 2004, as Usher signed on for the Cavaliers and Cuban began his overhaul of the Mavericks, mogul Jay-Z invested a cool $1 million for a minority stake in the Brooklyn Nets (then the New Jersey Nets). Under his watch, Jay-Z helped relocate to Brooklyn and push for a new stadium for the team. By the time he sold he stakes in 2013, he’d more than doubled his ROI.

Unfortunately, the Nets haven’t taken notice of Jay-Z’s work ethic. Since moving to the Barclay’s Center in 2012, they haven’t made any waves in the Eastern Conference. The business checks out, but the basketball… not so much.

Bill Maher & the New York Mets

In 2012, TV personality Bill Maher bought a small share in the New York Mets MLB franchise. As a New Yorker, Maher has long been a fan of the team. However, given his shrewd personality, it was a surprising choice to spend big money on a team forever caught in the Yankees’ shadow.

Aside from a title-grab from the East Division in 2015 and a wild card ticket to post-season play, the Mets haven’t done much since Maher invested in 2012.

NFL’s Rather Dull Wild Card Weekend 2014

0

The NFL didn’t exactly wow the average sports fan with the opening round of the playoffs. Three of the four games were not close with those winners being ahead by double digits at the end. Luckily for the league, Dallas and Detroit put on a good show. Actually it should have been a lopsided game also, but Detroit decided to get conservative which let the Cowboys get back in the game.

All this is not a big deal. It’s not like NFL fans are going to find something better to watch on TV next weekend in lieu of the second round of the post season. And two of those lopsided games really weren’t as bad as people are claiming. The Cincinnati and Indy game was a three point affair at the half. I never felt like Pittsburgh was truly out of the game with Baltimore until Big Ben threw that last pick after getting whiplash. The Arizona versus Carolina game was not a banner game for the league obviously. The only star power was Cam Newton in the entire game and he played so-so for the most part.

For those who don’t follow the NFL like a religion, they may be unaware of the reasons for the lopsided games. The Steelers were without their best offensive player in Le’Veon Bell. This guy was responsible for a huge chunk of the Steelers offense and he is the brightest star on the rise at running back in all of the league. The Ravens were at a big time advantage, even playing on the road, not having to deal with Bell’s production in the running and passing game. The guy had 83 catches during the year for Pete Rozelle’s sake.

Arizona was of course down to their third QB so they had little chance in their game. Third string corners or linebackers have a shot at holding their own at times. Emergency quarterbacks, which is what a third stringer is, just do not have a prayer as there is such a falloff in talent. Amazingly they actually led their game at the half with the Panthers by a point.

The Bengals may have fared no better had they had A.J. Green back from his concussion. But I have to believe they would have put up a fight a bit longer. Cincinnati has been awful in the past four years once they reached the playoffs. Their offense has simply been non-existent. A.J. Green in the lineup may not have pushed them past the Colts, but it certainly would have made a difference in their competitiveness.

The Dallas comeback ended the Wild Card Weekend on a high note, except for Detroit fans. I saw a couple of headlines claiming that Tony Romo came up clutch in this game. This is the furthest thing from the truth. He got lucky toward the end of the game, but the guy played like he always has in the playoffs, badly. He took sacks when he could have easily thrown the ball away. He missed open receivers repeatedly. He was the same old Tony Romo and if my guess is right, Aaron Rodgers is going to make him look really bad next week in comparison. Really, really bad.

Hopefully, next weekend’s games will be a bit better overall. I have seen tons of blowouts in the playoffs and in Super Bowls over the years. I have also seen some of the best games and individual moments during those years. That’s what keeps football fans coming back for more, the possibility of great games and epic performances. I just hope injuries don’t play a role the rest of the way.
