Knocking Out 2014 UFC MMA Style: Ronda Rousey Death Stare Rules

0

2014 ufc mma fight images

2014 has come and gone; now it feels like 2015 has hit us like a ton of bricks or a UFC MMA fighter. The UFC looks to get even bigger and already better in the upcoming year with a  great fight that shocked everyone when Jon Jones was taken down by Daniel Cromier. This fight had the highest pay per view numbers of any fight so 2015 is already looking to take out last year.

Before we get to the new year we need to flashback to the best of 2014 in the UFC. From nasty knockouts to epic returns, 2014 was full of MMA drama to the max. That is nothing unusual for the ultimate in fighting as Dana White knows how a sport should be run. Here is what happened in the year that was 2014 in the UFC.

matt brown vs robbie lawler mma ufc fight 2015 images

There were many great fights last year of course. Getting to the meat of the best fights is not hard. Matt Brown versus Robbie Lawler was a fight that could be put in the dictionary to describe a brawl. The two men put on a show that everyone wishes could happen at all UFC events. Lawler also had a classic fight with Johny Hendricks earlier in the year in which he came up short in the decision. Redemption came to Lawler at the end of 2014 as he edged Hendricks in another good fight for the welterweight title. Look for more great battles in 2015 from these three badass fighters.

chris weidman takes out mma ufc lyoto machida images 2014

Chris Weidman was involved in a top fight in 2014 as he got the best of Lyoto Machida. The middleweight champ got the decision after a rough five round fight with the former light heavyweight champ Machida. Weidman could be one of the biggest draws in the UFC if he continues to win. He is good with the media and just has that “it factor” that makes champions into icons.

war machine jon koppenhaver ufc fighter attacks girlfriend 2014

There were a few out of the Octagon issues in 2014, like any other sport. We had maniac Jon Koppenhaver, better known as “War Machine”, allegedly attacking his girlfriend Christy Mack in a brutal fashion. To be fair to the UFC, the nut job was not affiliated with the UFC at the time and had not been for several years. But the UFC did have to deal with a fighter under contract who was involved in a domestic abuse case. Anthony Johnson was suspended by the UFC while his court case was sorted out, but was eventually reinstated once the charges were dropped. After the NFL mess with Ray Rice and several other woman beaters, no sports organization can afford to turn a blind eye to domestic abuse. It’s about time.

dana white ufc head mma 2014

What would a year be without Dana White catching some flak? The guy does a great job running the UFC. He is perfect by no means and I am sure he can be a jerk in some instances. But I can’t envision any other leader of a pro sport working as hard as this man does. The UFC owes him a great deal in terms of how he has grown the sport. Of course everyone is not happy with the UFC or White. That is evident by the antitrust lawsuit filed by some former fighters who see the fight promotion as a monopoly that is holding down fighters. But without White, there are a stack of guys that would not be making the type of living they are through MMA. In a perfect world, MMA would not exist. Punching and choking other humans is not a healthy activity. But in this imperfect world, Dana White has done a good job with his sport.

The Ultimate Fighter wrapped up another season in 2014, crowning another TUF Champ. But interest is not where it once was for this reality show. There is just too much on TV to choose from and it is not easy to make a show stand out. It is fun to watch a group of guys or girls in a house together with all the drama. And we eventually get to see them battle each other in a ring. But it is still the same basic set up every year. The competition is what makes the show good.

cain velasquez ufc hamp out for injuries mma

There was a lot of buzz about how the pay per view numbers were down in the past year for the UFC. Dana White even acknowledged it, but there are no concrete numbers to compare from past years as the UFC plays it close to vest on those stats. The biggest reason for the falloff was lack of star power. The biggest names simply didn’t fight enough to make a dent in the PPV stats. The heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, didn’t fight at all last year due to an injury late in 2014. Anderson Silva was out all year with his awful leg break. Georges St-Pierre was one of the biggest PPV draws in UFC history, but he decided to retire at the end of 2013. His absence may have hurt the sport more than any other fighter when it came to selling a $60 fight card.

Some people started questioning whether the UFC had oversaturated the market with fights and fighters in 2014. It is kind of a ridiculous thing to say. Unless these fights are getting no live crowd and just a few eyeballs on the TV, it is nowhere near oversaturated. I am sure there are ups and downs with the casual sports fans watching UFC events. But the hardcore fan base is not going anywhere. Where would we go? To boxing? Hardly.

ufc ultimate fighting championship logo 2015

A few numbers from 2014 in the UFC before we call it a wrap. 229 fighters made their UFC debut last year. There were 46 UFC events with 503 fights. 431,712 fans attended those events live. Fight bonuses, one of my favorite aspects of the UFC, were totaled at nearly nine million dollars.

ronda rousey death stare ufc mma images 2015

Some of my most memorable side notes of 2014 were seeing Ronda Rousey’s death stare as she entered the Octagon. Also seeing Rousey, the hottest warrior alive, at any point doing anything whatsoever. The brawl between Jon Jones and Daniel Cromier in what appears to be real hatred between the two guys. Watching fighters caught using performance enhancing drugs try to explain away their failed drug tests. Seeing a guy come from nowhere to become interim heavyweight champ in Fabricio Werdum.

I look for more awesomeness from the UFC in 2015. Hopefully the biggest stars pick up the pace by fighting more regularly. But there will no doubt be newcomers that will blossom into stars of tomorrow to take up the slack if that is not the case.

Joe Rogan: UFC’s Best Ambassador

0

joe rogan best ufc ambassador dana white images

There’s probably a lot of people who think of Joe Rogan as the guy who oversaw the idiocy of “Fear Factor“. While that is true, he is much more than that. Many people know Rogan from his commentator role on UFC fights. This is still not his main gig, as he does stand up comedy to this day, and some acting. It is hard to imagine a stand up comedian being the go-to guy when it comes to calling MMA fights, but he is the best in the business. I pay close attention to the in game commentators for all the sports I enjoy, and their analysis matters. It can enhance the game or put a damper on it for me. Guys like Joe Rogan make the events much better. The passion he has for the fight game is overtly apparent to anyone watching and listening to UFC fights. That makes him the perfect ambassador to the UFC.

The UFC is lucky to have a guy like Joe Rogan and he is lucky to have them. The sport is growing and he will be there to experience how far the sport can go. It is cool that he gets to be a part of it all. The sport can thank him for introducing a ton of new fans to MMA. He is a huge advocate for fitness, martial arts in general, and human optimization. His interests carry over to his followers, and he has followers galore. The guy is big time on Twitter, sells out stand up shows everywhere he goes, and his podcast is listened to by millions every week. His fans like what he likes, so when he gets excited about a UFC event or a fighter, his fans naturally get interested in the topics he promotes.

I was already into the UFC when I started listening to Rogan’s podcast. After hearing a few fighter interviews and feeling his passion for it all, it made me more involved in the sport. It made me want to be as closely connected to the sport as possible. Some guys can fake their way through jobs. I can see when an analyst is not that into the subject they are talking about when it comes to sports. I want to connect with people who love the sport that they are covering. If they love it, they will put their heart and soul into their job. It is like watching a fight with a buddy. They get excited about a great fight and that makes you get more excited as well. That is what it is like hearing Joe Rogan on the call with his UFC partner Mike Goldberg.

Rogan has been into the martial arts for a long time. He was a Tae Kwon Do champion in his younger years. He won the Massachusetts title four years in a row. He later won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championship. To say he has been a high level martial artist is right on the money. He knows what it is like to compete at the highest levels. That means a lot when it comes to trusting what a commentator has to say about a fight or fighter. I know there are experts that have never stepped foot in a fighting ring, and I know they have good info to put out there. But an expert who does his homework and has been in similar combat, is going to get a bit more respect from me.

joe rogan holding mma ufc fighters for dana white 2015

As Rogan gets better at calling UFC fights, he is also still involved in MMA at ground level. He is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. That is what I call being involved in your profession. That is why he can anticipate moves in a UFC fight better than anyone. He knows the techniques that fighters are going to try, as he has rolled in gyms in similar situations. Also, the guy is a pro and makes sure he is prepared to do a great job. He may be a self proclaimed weed enthusiast, but he is not like some stereotypical stoner. He is at the top of his game at all times. He may not do things the mainstream way, but there is no one better at their job when it comes to calling UFC action. The fact that he is off the beaten path is more appealing to me. I like a guy with different ideas and perspectives. I get my fill of the ordinary in most everything I see on TV or in other media. I enjoy the outlier.

As the UFC continues to reach new heights, I hope Joe Rogan always remains a part of it. He is a weird man, so I could see him just going away for a few years to “think” or get high daily. But I hope that doesn’t happen. UFC fans need him. People yet to become UFC fans need him as well. They don’t know what they are missing with this sport. But as long as “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast is ongoing, these fans will keep coming on board with MMA and the UFC. If they like Joe, they will like mixed martial arts if they give it a chance.

joe rogan watching mma ufc fighters bulge for dana white

I once thought that the sport was just ‘human cockfighting’ before I gave it a chance at all. I now see all the intricacies and details involved in this fight game. I know what makes many of these fighters tick. I see techniques evolving year after year. I just have a clearer vision of what the hell is happening in the ring and around the sport. That has been helped along by the UFC’s best ambassador, Joe Rogan. Without him, I am not the UFC nut that I am today. Without him, I am not sure I would have had the desire to lose 40 pounds last year and work on my fitness. I’ve even had the itch to find a local MMA gym for myself. I have to thank Mr. Rogan for what he has done for me. The UFC certainly owes him a big thank you as well.

2015 Academy Award Nominations

academy awards oscars logo 2015

Yup, it’s already that time of year again to race and check out all those films that have been nominated for an Academy Award. This year, there’s been a great source of films to check with eight movies being nominated. Yup, some are heavy, but that’s what the Oscars are all about, giving credit to those films that many people don’t really check out at their local multiplex.

neil patrick harris bulge host for academy awards 2015

Neil Patrick Harris will be hosting the Academy Awards 2015 this year, but producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron weren’t too quiet about who their first choice was. After seeing an eight percent increase at last years Oscars, Ellen Degeneres was their first choice and they begged for her to return a third time. She said no, and I think there was some ego since last year she received some very mixed reviews. I, for one, wasn’t too crazy about it as it is that one awards show that just seems to take itself way too seriously even when it’s supposedly not trying to.

Next on the producers list was Chris Rock and then Veep’s Julia Louise Dreyfuss but they also passed. Most people are wise to as it is a thankless job that can usually put a tarnish on many who just aren’t ready for it.

So here’s the full list below along with some fancy images for those that like their noms with fancy writing.

TOP CHEF: BOSTON Week 11 Recap: Family Ties Plus Last Chance Kitchen Winner

top chef boston week 10 contestants images

As the Top Chef: Boston competition is coming to its conclusion in just a few short weeks, there are four chefs left competing for the ultimate prize. This week’s episode started with the chefs proclaiming that the competition wouldn’t be the same without Doug, who was eliminated on last week’s show. Melissa said that going from the top of the competition to the bottom was hard on her and that she was struggling to make it through the competition without her girlfriend present to support her.

Padma then introduced Ashley Christianson to help judge this week’s challenge and Padma announced there was no quickfire this week. Instead, chefs were being sent on a mission to catch their own oysters to use in an appetizer and an entrée. Padma then brought out some family members of the remaining cheftestants, so that the chefs could receive help from their loved one in the form of serving as their sous chefs. George stated that his father was by his side but is very intimidating and hard for him to work with. Padma then informed the chefs that their appetizers would be prepared by their loved ones. She announced that no one was going to be eliminated from the competition after this challenge. The winner will move forward to the Top Chef finals, taking place in Mexico. Mei stated that her family does not support her being in the culinary business and that her brother was her parents’ preferred child.

When the cheftestants and their loved ones arrived at an oyster farm they were taken out to catch them. Mei complained that her brother made it more difficult for them to catch their oysters. George also said that he feels like he has an advantage because his father knows his way around a kitchen. Mei then said that she was thinking about incorporating clams into her dish and this might be her ticket to making it into the finals. Melissa then said she might have her mom make an egg custard because she used to make them for Melissa when she was a kid. Gregory and his sister talked about the time they tried to bake a cake together and ended up throwing it away after they burned it. George said shopping with his father was a memorable experience and that he wanted to make a flavorful dish that was not too complicated so he could keep an eye on his dad while he made the appetizer. Mei complained she gave her brother a list of ingredients to get and he was too slow about shopping for them.

The chefs arrived at the place where they would stay overnight. Gregory talked about how close he and his sister are, especially when he cleaned himself up after getting hooked on drugs and alcohol. Melissa’s mom then said her dad does not accept Melissa’s career choice and avoids having her in his life due to the fact that she is gay. Melissa then said her mom had always supported and encouraged her. George stated that when he graduated from culinary school he was supposed to work for the family’s diner but he wanted to work in fine dining instead. When George opened his own restaurant his dad sold the family diner to help George run the restaurant from a financial standpoint. Mei then stated that neither of her parents approved of her becoming a chef.

As the chefs showed up at the kitchen where they would be preparing their dishes they gave instructions to their loved ones. Mei admitted that she is prone to becoming a control freak in the kitchen. She once again stated that her brother was working too slowly and she didn’t want that to lessen her chances of making it into the final leg of the competition. Tom then showed up to check on the chefs as they prepared their dishes. Later Mei said that after she yelled at her brother for moving too slow he finally started to speed up his pace.

top chef boston melissa with mei week 11 2015

Mei was the first to present her dishes to the judges. Tom said the seafood was perfectly cooked and Gail said it was well seasoned. Mei then stated that she and her brother had bonded throughout the course of this challenge. Gregory got so busy helping his sister he let his oven get too warm and had to pull his halibut off of it so it did not end up overcooked. He also stated he wasn’t sure if his dish was good enough to get him into the finals. When he presented it to the judges he introduced his sister, Jessica. Jessica described her tomato watermelon soup and Richard Blais told her she prepared it well. He also told Gregory he did a great job teaching his sister. Other judges said that the soup could have been saltier. George said he and his father worked hard to make these dishes and that he felt like his father was proud of him now. Mei complimented her mother on moving so efficiently through the process of making the dish. The judges praised Mei’s mother’s custard. Mei made a lobster dish and the judges said it was perfectly cooked. Mei then stated she was grateful that the judges liked her dishes and that winning with her mom’s help would be a sweet victory. Tom then said that Gregory’s sister did a better job on her dish than he did on his. Padma complimented Mei on her lobster entrée.

top chef boston melissa with mother week 11

Padma then announced the other judges that she felt like they had their winner chosen for this challenge. She then called all of them to the judge’s table. Tom said that this challenge helped bring people together and that some family members did better than their chef did. The one chef chosen to go onto the final rounds of the competition was Melissa, who was very relieved to hear this news. The chefs had to say goodbye to their family members.

Editor’s Note: Last Change Kitchen surprised both Adam and Doug as they were waiting for the next cheftestant to walk through the doors, but then Tom did his wiseass smirk. He let the boys know that since no one was eliminated from Top Chef Boston this week, they’d be duking it out in their third head to head battle. They were tied at one to one so this was their tie-breaker. It centered around one of Top Chef’s biggest sponsor’s Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing where they had to create a meal using it and vegetables found in crudite.

Adam’s been the strong one in this part of the competition as it was his fourth round, but Doug bested him even though he overcooked his first choice of steak and went with pork for Tom. So Doug rejoins the cast for the finale after we see who moves on next week.

Dana White is the most fascinating head of a pro sport today. The president of the UFC is actually one of the most interesting sports figures in any position. His style is a straight shooting, no BS way of doing business. He does not mind ruffling some feathers no matter the subject or the person he is dealing with. With such a character and his penchant for speaking his mind, I would like to ask Dana White these 10 questions if I ever got the chance.

  1. What do you think of all the NFL lawsuits by former players and how can the UFC avoid such legal issues?
  1. Who is the best boxer in the history of the sport? I know Anderson Silva is his choice for best MMA fighter ever.
  1. Is there any point in boxing continuing as a sport? Isn’t it too far gone to recover?
  1. How will you know when the UFC is oversaturated or watered down? Could you really be objective on this or would you need some advisers to help with this?
  1. Can Anderson Silva really come back to being anything close to what he was prior to his leg being shattered in the rematch with Weidman?
  1. Do you think there is someone out there to replace Ronda Rousey if she leaves for a Hollywood type career?
  1. Who is the most disappointing UFC fighter ever?
  1. If you had to narrow it down, what is the one turning point that made the UFC go from irrelevant to a big time sport?
  1. Would you ever try a PPV right after the Super Bowl? It seems like a good way to get a big audience to carry over to a UFC event.
  1. What UFC fighter has been the biggest headache over the years? I have a feeling I know the answer, but White might surprise me on this one.

Most Overrated & Underrated Euro Soccer Teams 2014 – 2015

most overrated underrated euro soccer teams 2015

There are great soccer teams, then there are decent soccer teams, then comes the overrated and underrated teams. Here’s a look at some of them as of now.

Overrated

tottenham hotspurs most overrated euro soccer teams 2015

Tottenham

If big things such as league titles are expected of Arsenal who ultimately fail, then their north London rivals Tottenham are the top four equivalent. The Londoners are supposedly permanent dark horses – such that they’re expected to give the top four a run for their money and yet, barely finish 5th or 6th.

It even got to the point where in the 2011/2012 season, title ambitions were being spoken of when they eventually fell to 4th place, remarkably still losing out on Champions League football because 6th place Chelsea won the competition.

After the departure of star men, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, big things were expected of Tottenham – they had the cash and they spent a lot on various players, hoping to push on with a Champions League spot being the minimum requirement. And as usual, they faltered.

As Jonathan Wilson perfectly put it on his Betting Expert blog:

There is a golden rule in writing season previews, which is never to assume Tottenham Hotspur will do anything other than what they’ve been doing for the majority of the last half century, which is to say producing the odd glowing performance, flattering to deceive and ultimately disappointing. They have become the hungry ghosts of the Premier League, doomed always to haunt the netherworld that lies between Champions League qualification and midtable, never really threatening even to get far enough in the Europa League for people to start taking that competition seriously.

Tottenham however, seem to finally have a promising manager in Mauricio Pochettino and with some decent signings so far as well as a season of stability and experience under last season’s new signings belts, maybe this year can be something different?

juventus most overrated soccer teams of 2015

Juventus

It feels weird to call a team who have won the league three times in a row – at the time of writing – overrated but that’s what Juventus are. The first time they did it under new manager, Antonio Conte in 2012 was a remarkable achievement as they finished 7th the previous season and accomplished the feat unbeaten.

However, since then, more than the Bianconeri having the talent and experience, the league has just gotten that much weaker. With Napoli losing stars in Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi, Milan losing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva and Inter losing Philippe Coutinho among others, the competition has drastically weakened.

Where Juventus are really overrated though is when it comes to Europe – they have simply flattered to deceive in the Champions League, even getting knocked out in the group stage this past season in a relatively easy group.

When you have players like Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and company, it is simply unacceptable to finish 3rd in the Champion’s League group stage behind Galatasaray with all due respect.

And with Conte no longer at the helm, being replaced by the not so popular, Massimiliano Allegri, things could get rough for the Serie A champions, having lost a lot of stability that their dear coach had brought them. There could also be the departure of key man, Vidal while Pirlo isnt getting any younger either. With Roma looking like a side worthy of challenging for honors now, we could really see how overrated Juventus are this season.

Underrated

everton most underrated soccer teams 2015

Everton

While they are virtually everyone’s second favorite team in the Premier League, Everton are still a pretty underrated side. Given their net spend over the years, it’s remarkable that they’ve still remained in the Europa League spots, on some occasions, even challenging for a top four spot.

Unlike Tottenham, Everton have less resources, a less expensive squad and importantly, less expectations. This past season, Everton made their biggest push for a Champions League spot since the last time they finished 4th – challenging Arsenal right to the wire, they failed, falling 7 points behind in 5th but it was a great effort especially considering it was manager, Roberto Martinez’s debut season.

If we look at other aspects of the season, Everton beat Manchester United at Old Trafford while being the only top seven side to inflict a defeat on Chelsea. Adding to this, they were unbeaten against Arsenal, even beating the Gunners 3-0 at home while they also finished above Tottenham and Manchester United – a great feat considering the depth in resources between the clubs.

Having signed Romelu Lukaku, the Toffees finally have a reliable striker who can score goals – something which has been somewhat of an Achilles heel over the years. And with Ross Barkley’s contract extended and a promising manager in Martinez, more and more people will be appreciating the side from Merseyside who could push for a top four spot this year.

manchester united most underrated soccer teams euro 2015

Manchester United

This is somewhat of a controversial pick given that they’re the most successful team in England and were champions in 2013 but it’s only based on the current scenario at hand. Under new manager, David Moyes, the red devils faltered badly, finishing in an astonishing 7th place – a huge decline in the space of a year.

It’s not that they had bad players – it was just appalling management by Sir Alex Fergusons successor while there many cracks which were papered over the years such as United’s problems in midfield.

Under new manager, Louis van Gaal, they have a proven winner who is confident in his managing ability, isn’t afraid of making tough decisions and is already having a positive effect on the players as can be seen in pre-season. He’s already signed Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera whilst deploying a new 3-5-2 formation which seems to be working well. The players seem happy and confident too.

Despite this, people seem to think United won’t get back into the top four which is a ridiculous claim. Of course, no one expected United to fall to 7th but no one is expecting United to win the title this time either. Top four is the goal and while van Gaal will want to be champions, it’s hard to see United not getting a Champions League spot as they also have a decent run of opening fixtures which could help build momentum.

Theyre still the biggest club in the world and have some world class stars in Juan Mata, Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and more – they could also be signing Arturo Vidal who will galvanize their midfield entirely. And so, as of now, United – believe it or not – are pretty underrated at the moment.

Top 10 Issues UFC Faces As It Keeps Growing

ufc issues to fix 2015

The UFC is where Dana White wants it to be, everywhere. Live events, online streaming, and they are a major network in Fox. With the Ultimate Fighting Championship doing well and available on a broader basis, what will come next? These are the ten biggest issues facing the UFC as it keeps on growing.

war machine jon koppenhaver problems for ufc 2015

  1. Out of the ring incidents like the recent one with ‘War Machine’, Jon Koppenhaver, will have to be dealt with as they pop up. Violent people occupy this violent sport, just like football.

ultimate fighter show on ufc

  1. Keeping ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ reality show relevant. Reality TV shows tend to fade out over time. They will have to give viewers real reasons to hang around season after season.
  1. Keeping corruption out of the sport. When gambling is involved there will always be slimy judges. The UFC, just like boxing, will always have the possibility of terrible decisions due to some people on the take.
  1. Engaging young kids is the key to the UFC’s, or any sport’s future. Ignore the little ones and who is left to watch in 25 years?
  1. Making pay per views more available. Paying $60 for a High Def pay per view is no joke. It is nothing if you split it up between friends, but many people have to shell out that money solo. Maybe giving restaurants and bars more incentive to carry the ppvs is part of the answer.

  1. Fighter compensation has been very secretive by Dana White’s mandate. These star fighters will eventually want a bigger piece of the pie as the UFC generates more dollars.
  1. Steroid use is a problem in every sport. Guys see a chance for an advantage so they are going to try and get away with it.
  1. Concussions are a huge issue in the NFL now with the recent settlement for former players. Clearly, getting knocked out is not good for the brain. Lawyers are licking their lips all over the country to get a shot at the UFC eventually.
  1. Overexposure. Being everywhere all the time is great for the hardcore MMA fan. But casual viewers may have a hard time keeping up with all the action. There are only so many hours in the day.

  1. Fighters coming together as a union. This may be a longshot with such an individualistic sport. But it would mean gigantic changes to the UFC.

Three Timeless Kings Of Football

three kings of nfl football 2015

There have been some great coaches in the long storied history of football. From college to the NFL, there are numerous men who have earned the title of “great coach”. Then there are the true legends of the game. Names like Lombardi, Bear Bryant, and Bill Walsh come to the forefront of that group. But there is an even smaller group that has done what even the most worshiped football coaches have not. This tribe is only three strong and they are distinguished by having won a college national title and a Super Bowl.

Winning a college football national title is not easy. A Super Bowl victory is even harder to get. Most football coaches never get to either of these goals. The only three coaches that have achieved the ultimate in football success, winning a Super Bowl and college national championship, are Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, and Pete Carroll. Switzer and Johnson are out of the game but Carroll has a chance to add to his accomplishments. Carroll is at the helm of defending Super Bowl champion, Seattle. His team has the possibility to get another Super Bowl trophy this year.

Some people might say that there have been better coaches than these three guys who happen to have been at the very top in college and the NFL. That would be a good debate to have indeed. There are college coaches who had longer runs at a high level. Similarly in the NFL, there have been coaches who have won over a longer time period. But what Johnson, Switzer, and Carroll have done is truly unique and deserves proper credit.

barry switzer king of nfl football 2015

Out of these three kings of football, I would say that Barry Switzer is the least of the coaches. That takes nothing away from him as a football coach. I just don’t believe he was at the same level as Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll. In college, Switzer was “the man” at Oklahoma. His teams ran rough shod over any and everyone for many years. His winning record against other top notch coaches, including Jimmy Johnson and Tom Osborne, is a good indicator of his dominance from 1973-1988. Switzer won three national titles at Oklahoma and one Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys in 1995. His Super Bowl, while impressive, is not on the level of the other two coaches on this short list. He basically took over Jimmy Johnson’s team that had won two Super Bowls already. The roster was full of Hall Of Famers and was one of the greatest NFL teams in history. The fact that Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson could not get along anymore was the only reason Switzer was even in the position to coach a Super Bowl team in the first place. All that being said, he did do what was necessary for the Cowboys to win a third Super Bowl with that same core group of players.

jimmy johnson king of nfl football 2015

Jimmy Johnson was in charge of one of the most controversial college teams ever assembled. The Miami Hurricanes of the 80’s were a brash group of players who did not shy away from showboating and trash talking. They took it to another level and were hated for it on a national basis for the most part. The Canes won one national title under Johnson and had an incredible regular season record. If there was one criticism of Jimmy Johnson, it was that he couldn’t win the big game in college. He had lost three straight bowl games before the national title year in 1987. When Johnson was hired to take over the Dallas Cowboys, he had a huge task before him. The team was not very good and had few players to build around. His first year in the NFL was a 1-15 disaster, but that turned quickly. In his fourth year, he took the Cowboys to a Super Bowl win and then repeated the next season. Back to back Super Bowls after getting to the top in college was truly an amazing accomplishment. It is a real shame that Johnson did not get to help his Dallas team as they tried for a three-peat in 1994. The team lost in the NFC title game to the 49ers, with Switzer leading the team. Troy Aikman still feels like the team could have made history had Johnson been able to stay with his team. No team has ever won three Super Bowls in a row.

pete carroll king of nfl football 2015

The latest addition to this tiny club of coaching royalty is Pete Carroll. At USC, Carrol created a team that was electrifying and dominated their competition on a regular basis. The Trojans won a BCS college title in 2004 and an AP national title in 2003. They were one yard away from a first down that would have sealed a third college championship in 2005, but failed on that fourth down attempt. After bolting for the Seahawks job in 2010, Carroll was thought of as another college coach who would not be able to hack it in the NFL. He had a rough go of it previously with the Jets and Patriots years earlier. Experts didn’t think his “rah-rah” attitude would transfer to the pro players. But in year four, Carroll surprised the football world by getting his young team into the Super Bowl in the 2013 season. The Seahawks were a gigantic underdog in the big game but ending up destroying the favored Broncos. This win cemented Carroll’s place in history. He is still not done, as the Seahawks are talented and young enough to make another couple runs at another Super Bowl.

Getting another championship in the NFL won’t be easy. Switzer and Johnson can attest to that. One title is hard enough to get in the NFL. If Carroll manages to get two Super Bowl wins, then he and Johnson are equals in  my eyes. And I might even put Carroll ahead of Jimmy Johnson as it is much harder to keep a team together and motivated in 2014 than it was in the early 90’s. Either way, these three men have done something that sets them apart from the rest of the pack. They won where they were most comfortable, in college. Then they got into the meat grinder of the NFL and came out with the jewelry to prove they more than belonged. Bragging rights are forever the property of Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, and Pete Carroll.

Johnny Manziel’s Athleticism Is A Double Edged Sword

johnny manziel fighting bulge cleveland browns 2015

How would you like to be Johnny Manziel? The kid is on top of the world. He is an NFL quarterback with the universe at his finger tips. And unless he just messes up big time in some way, he is going to be given the chance to start for his Cleveland Browns. He has every chance to make it as a big time NFL star. One underlying issue facing him is the double edged sword of his athleticism. It seems like his ability to run on defenses is nothing but a positive, but if you look closer it could shape his career negatively.

Johnny Manziel appears to be as quick as almost any other QB in the NFL right now. Kid is fast. Taking off when he sees an opening or when a play goes to hell is a natural instinct to him. In a fantasy world where humans were immune to injury, Manziel could rush for 1,000 yards this year. And that would be cool to see, but unfortunately for the guy, this is the real world of the NFL. When it comes to injuries, the NFL is as real as it gets. Ripped up knees, broken collar bones, and  concussions that can affect these men for a lifetime are no joke.

I have no doubt that Manziel can get and keep the starting job in Cleveland if he plays the style that comes to him most naturally. That style has gotten him to where he is today, one of the best 32 quarterbacks on this planet. But to be a longterm NFL quarterback that has real success in the pros, he will have to evolve into more. His athleticism can wow fans and make the Top Plays segment on SportsCenter. But he will have to get uncomfortable to reach his full potential. Getting uncomfortable means relying on his arm more than his legs. That is hard for a guy to do when his entire life he has been able to make defenders look silly when he takes off toward the first down marker.

johnny manziel tight bulge spot for cleveland browns 2015

If I could get inside Johnny Manziel’s head, I would see him thinking that in order to win the starting job he needs to make plays. If that involves him running for 60 yards a game so be it. In his mind he needs to win the starting gig by any means necessary. That may be true, but once he earns the spot, he will need to become a passer with the ability to run when only absolutely necessary. He is now a quarterback that is a threat to run at any time. That mindset will only get him so far. Then it will get him jacked up.

If any J-Football fans believe Manziel can be different, then they have not paid attention to past case studies in athletic quarterbacks. Mike Vick is one of the fastest players I have ever witnessed in the NFL. He could make guys miss and could outrun most any player in the entire league. But he still was not untouchable. He took shots that were detrimental to his career longterm and his team at the time. They needed him to be on the field for each play and in each of the 16 regular season games, not to mention any playoff games. By risking life and limb, Vick took himself away from his team for valuable minutes of game play. J-Football is fast and he is good. But if Vick did not get away unscathed with his running style, no way this kid will be able to do it.

Letting their franchise quarterback turn into the passer they need him to be will take patience from the Brown’s staff. If Manziel plays it safe and tries to avoid those risky runs, the coaches have to accept and encourage it. He can win a few games a year with his legs, sure. But as a pocket passer, he can string together multiple winning seasons. That is what NFL franchises need. It is a marathon, not a sprint. The Redskins found it out with RG3. Get your star quarterback hurt and the pain can be felt in multiple seasons.

johnny manziel top man bottoms out for nfl 2014 images

No matter how much the coaching staff drills it into Johnny Football‘s head, he has to be the one making the decisions on the field. Throw or run? The choice is easy in the short term. Stick with what works. The problem is that it will only work so many times before it costs the guy a few games due to getting whacked. Sure Manziel or any other QB can get hurt in the pocket. But with all the new safety rules to protect NFL quarterbacks, that is a lot less likely. Once they are out of the pocket, it is a different story. Anything can and does happen in the open field.

johnny manziel injured by luke kuechly bulge nfl cry

All a Cleveland fan has to do is look around the league at what QBs have the most success. I know Johnny Manziel is not Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. But he could play like Russell Wilson or like John Elway did back in the day. Save those thrilling runs for when the team needs them the most, not every fifth play. Need a first down late in the fourth quarter? Then take off and do your thing. The first quarter of a 3-0 game is not the time to be testing the closing ability of a 240 pound safety.

Count me as a fan of Johnny Football. I like his care free attitude. I like the fact that he is not going to let the media dictate how he lives his life. Most of all, he is fun to watch. I want to see him have a long and success filled career. His athleticism is what most of his fans enjoy. If he uses it in the right way, it may carry him to the top of his profession someday. If he leans on it too heavily, he will plateau pretty quickly. Whatever the outcome, I have a feeling it will be a fun ride to watch.

2015 NFL Championship Weekend Preview Plus Super Bowl XLIX Predictions

2015 nfl championship images

Championship weekend is quickly approaching, and it seems like the closer we get to the AFC and NFC showdowns the more lopsided they become. Spoiler alert: Seahawks and Patriots Super Bowl XLIX. Here’s a preview of this weekend’s championship games:

green bay packers vs seattle seahawks nfl championship 2015

Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks: Here we are back to square one. The NFC Championship this year features a rematch of the Green Bay Packers trip to CenturyLink Field against the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks won that game 36-16, but the Packers certainly aren’t looking to lose by 20 in the NFC Championship Game. Sure, the Packers are a good team; but they don’t have the offense style necessary to compete with the Seahawks. The Packers biggest weakness however is there defense. Any defense that gives up 36 points to a Russell Wilson is not fit to be in the NFL. The Seahawks defense is dominant at home, and just a few turnovers by Aaron Rodgers might led to a Seahawks led that the Pack can’t bounce back from. That being said, the Seahawks have not had any overly impressive victories lately. They had big margins of victory against the 49ers, Cardinals, and Panthers; but none of those teams really proved to be competitors this season. All in all, this is a difficult game to predict. I could see the Packers getting same-site revenge on the Seahawks and silencing the crowd, but it is also very likely that the Seahawks will take over in the second half and win by 20 again. At the end of the day I like the Seahawks. The Packers defense will definitely prove to be an issue as the game progresses. Seahawks advance to the Super Bowl for the second year in a row.

colts vs new england patriots nfl championship 2015 images

Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots: This preview will be pretty short. The Patriots have absolutely owned Andrew Luck and the Colts since his career began. The Colts really don’t even deserve to be in this game, but they did earn their trip and that can’t be taken away from them. The Colts don’t have the defense to stop Rob Gronkowski or Julian Edelman or the offense to be able to compete with the Patriots top ranked defense. The only edge the Colts have in this game is Vegas. Almost 65 percent of the bets on this game favor the Colts, so if they win you can certainly toss that up to bookie magic. Patriots win easily and advance to Super Bowl XLIX.
