NCAA Needs To Take Another Look At Its Marijuana Policy

ncaa need to revisit its marijuana policy 2015

Ohio State defeated Oregon 42-20 to claim college football’s national championship, the first-ever in the new College Football Playoff era. Would it have been any different if the Ducks’ Darren Carrington and Ayele Forde could have played? We will never know.

oregon ducks suspended darren carrington and ayele forde for smoking marijuana 2015 ncaa

Carrington and Forde each tested positive for marijuana and, as a result, were ruled ineligible for the national championship game. What many may not realize is that players who violate the NCAA marijuana policy will now be ineligible for half of a season. According to NCAA rules, players testing positive for banned substances, such as marijuana, are ineligible for a period of one half of the team’s season.

Forde is a senior, but Carrington, a redshirt freshman, could miss six games next season. Oregon can appeal the NCAA decision but, as is most likely, Carrington will miss half of his redshirt sophomore season, which brings up the question: should the NCAA re-evaluate its policy on marijuana?

Should big-time college football players be smoking marijuana? Probably not, but the changes in the perception of the drug are filtering through society. Four states, including Oregon, have passed laws that legalize the use of marijuana. As many as 20 more have made it legal for medicinal purposes.

Are FBS football players smoking weed? Most likely. The NCAA periodically does surveys on drug use among its athletes. The latest was done in 2013 and found that 22 percent of student-athletes have used marijuana in the last year. That includes athletes in all sports, but the survey did show that substance abuse is higher among males. Regardless, are there college football players smoking weed? The answer is yes.

To understand why the NCAA even has a marijuana policy, you have to understand that the drug was grouped with others like heroin and LSD as part of the street drug panic in the 1980s. Smoking weed was viewed as the same as shooting up heroin. Add in the epidemic known as anabolic steroids and the result was that the NCAA joined the federal government in trying to prevent drug use. The result was the NCAA’s drug testing policy, which has changed little through the years.

The NCAA mandates drug testing, but there is really no rhyme or reason to it. There is year-round testing as well as championship testing, but not all players are tested. Rules state that testing is random, but the NCAA can test whoever they like. Year-round testing only tests for substances such as steroids and masking agents not marijuana.

Only teams that qualify for championships, such as those that participate in bowl games, are subject to the championship testing. The NCAA does test for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, during championship testing, which brings up the actual testing itself. The NCAA standard for the amount of THC found in a urine sample is five nanograms per milliliter (5 ng/ml). Any student-athlete with a concentration of THC at 5 ng/ml or higher is found to be in violation of the NCAA drug policy.

Comparing the NCAA test to that of say, the National Football League, illustrates just how out of touch the organization is with its marijuana policy. NFL athletes are not in violation of the league’s substance policy unless the concentration of THC is 35 ng/ml or higher. Even Olympic standards are higher coming in at 150 ng/ml.

mitch mcgary balls for ncaa marijuana policy 2015

While the NCAA’s testing continues to be questioned, its penalties for violating the drug policy are even more ridiculous. During last year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament, Michigan forward Mitch McGary tested positive for marijuana as part of the championship testing done by college athletics’ governing body. McGary, who missed most of the season with an injury, would not even play in the tournament but, as a result of violating the NCAA’s drug policy was suspended for a year.

A one year suspension was the NCAA’s penalty for having 5 ng/ml of marijuana in his system. The length of the suspension was amended just last year to half of a season. McGary, who was a freshman All-American for the Wolverines the year before, decided to turn pro instead of missing another season.

Another twist in drug testing is that most schools have their own drug policies and testing systems in place. The irony of McGary’s story is that if he would have failed a drug test by the university, he would have been reprimanded but would not have been suspended at all.

Forde and Carrington failing their drug test did bring to light the NCAA and its antiquated drug policy. The organization would do itself, and its student-athletes, a world of good by examining its rules and punishments related to the use of banned substances.

Oregon Ducks Quack Out Against Ohio State Recap

ohio state vs oregon ncaa images 2015

I can’t say how many times I have seen it happen in football. Ten, twenty? A high powered offense rolls over teams in the regular season while getting love from all the “experts” and casual fans. Then they get to a title game and are made to look foolish. It just happened again this past Monday night when the Ducks of Oregon fell to the underdog Buckeyes of Ohio State.

Ohio State rolled past Oregon to the tune of 42-20. I have no idea how a team on a roll like the Ducks were can get beat by 22 points when the opponent turned the ball over four times. Teams that give away the ball that much in a game hardly ever win. Oregon had just one turnover, but somehow managed to lose by more than three touchdowns. Simply amazing.

The bottom line is that momentum can swing in an instant. Oregon might beat Ohio State 7 times out of 10 if they played over and over. But that is just useless predicting on paper. The fact is Oregon couldn’t beat the Buckeyes when it mattered. They got one shot and they didn’t execute for whatever reason. It is easy to fault the team that is favored and loses, but to put it simply…..the opponent has players and coaches too. It’s not like Urban Myer let his team just hang out by the pool all week before the game. They practiced just like Oregon and were more ready for the game than the Ducks.

The Buckeyes won this game by keeping the ball out of the hands of the Ducks’ offense. They kept the ball for over 37 minutes to Oregon’s 22 plus minutes. Just how did they manage to hold the ball so long? It was an ancient method called running the football. A method that many fans have forgotten, what with all the fancy passing and hurry up techniques of Oregon. The Buckeyes rolled up nearly 300 yards on the ground. They didn’t do it in large chunks either, averaging 4.9 yards per carry which is better for clock eating.

Oregon had big trouble on third down also. They simply couldn’t convert, going 2-12, while Ohio State converted over half of their third downs.

I am no Urban Myer fan, but I will give the man his due. He took a team that lost both the starting QB and the backup, to a National Title. I don’t think there are more than a couple other coaches who could have won the big game with a third stringer at quarterback.

Oregon fans are not alone in their misery after the upset. They can join a list of prolific offenses, both college and pro, who have failed to win the championship game after wowing the football world all season. Here are a few examples. The Denver Broncos just last year lit up the record books only to get destroyed in the Super Bowl by Seattle. The Buffalo Bills were an offensive juggernaut in their heyday, only to lose four Super Bowls in a row, three embarrassingly so. Elway’s Broncos lost three Super Bowls even though they had a high powered offense. Miami’s 2002 team was full of offensive stars only to lose to Ohio State in the championship contest. Oregon lost the 2010 National Title to Auburn as they managed just 19 points. The Minnesota Vikings of 1997 shredded records with a young Randy Moss and Chris Carter in his prime, only to lose to the mundane rushing offense of the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Title game. I don’t think I need to continue.

I’d say that this year’s new playoff system was a success. Fans got to have an extra day of a championship feel as the semi finals played out. Look for an expansion of the playoffs in the coming years. I see no reason to limit the playoffs to just four teams. They don’t need to add an overload of undeserving teams, but I see eight being a good number eventually. Just make sure you don’t put your life savings or even a few dollars on an elite offense in the title game. You will be let down every single time. Just ask Duck fans, who are likely still hung over today from the misery of losing.

Surprise: Rosie Perez Off THE VIEW

rosie perez off the view 2015

Whoopi Goldberg swore up and down that Rosie Perez being off ABC’s The View this month to appear in the Broadway play “Fish In the Dark” had nothing with her being canned from the show, but shockingly, she lied whether she knew it or not. I’ve been hearing since November that Perez would be off the show this month, and Variety has declared it so now. One person who won’t be replacing her is ousted Sherri Shepherd thankfully. But you can be sure that she’s been campaigning to get back on the show as her career is pretty much on that slow down track again.

Perez joined The View on September 15, 2014 as part of a reinvigoration of the declining ratings show when Shepherd Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy were finally put out of their misery. Rosie O’Donnell and Nicole Wallace were also hired to join moderator Whoopi Goldberg. The new Executive Producer Bill Wolff had actually chosen Perez, but it was obvious from the first week that while the actress is great in movies and plays, talk shows are not her strong suit. Even in that first week, she tried to disguise her very strong Brooklyn accent, but finally gave up that ghost and began talking like her true self shortly afterward.

Ratings dropped dramatically last year and have stayed pretty much on par this year with some key demos losing out. The View has been trying out many younger faces and one that is very strong is the running is “Orange Is the New Black‘s” Lorraine Cox, who’s appeared twice as a co-host on the show.

Personally, I used to enjoy Whoopi Goldberg as the moderator, but this season she seems to be on a real downer for some reason, and when a Hot Topic gets going at the table, she quickly changes topics. Now I know many times that because she’s got a producer in her ear telling her to switch, but this only makes the show feel less newsworthy as they have in the past. Goldberg’s been off the show for a, and it’s been much more enjoyable.

Many are calling for Nicole Wallace to step down, but I truly hope ABC doesn’t cut her out as she’s one of the few that’s very smart and reminds me of Meredith Viera and Lisa Ling. ABC is scrambling to find a young face that  hold her own with Goldberg and the funny but domineering Rosie O.

2015 NFL Divisional PLayoffs Recap: Pats, Seahawks, Packers & Colts Move On

2015 nfl divisionals seattle patriots win images

This was certainly an interesting weekend to be sure; however, since both Seattle and New England won nothing else really matters. Looks like we’re in store for a Seahawks Patriots Super Bowl. Here’s a recap of the Divisional weekend:

new england patriots tom brady beats baltimore ravens 2015 nfl images

Baltimore Ravens 31 at New England Patriots 35: The Ravens actually had a 14 point lead at two different points in this game, but unfortunately for Baltimore Rob Gronkowski and a little bit a foul trickery by Bill Bellichick kept the Pats in the game and eventually won it. Gronk was fantastic catching seven passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. Tom Brady had good numbers, but as usual his team did it all for him. The Ravens defensive line could hardly lay a finger on Brady, and of course Gronk was impossible to stop. Joe Flacco had two interceptions including the game-losing one, ending his playoff streak.

russell wilson panthers fighting doug baldwin seahawks for ball nfl divisions 2015

Carolina Panthers 17 at Seattle Seahawks 31: No one really gave the Panthers much of a chance coming into this game, and sure enough they didn’t win. This game actually could have been a lot worse, but Cam Newton had a great game (minus his two killer interceptions). 246 yards and two touchdowns is really a good game considering his opponent. Russell Wilson didn’t do much at all, but that’s not what the stat line says. Wilson finished with 268 yards on 15 completions.

dallas cowboys nfl vs green bay packers 2015

Dallas Cowboys 21 at Green Bay Packers 26: I think it’s funny that Cowboy fans seem to think that they were robbed on the Dez Bryant incompletion at the end of the game. That’s right, the team that was only in this game because of one of the worst calls in NFL history feels they were cheated by the refs. The rule stats that the ball must be secured through the catch going to the ground. Sure, it was a beautiful play; but by NFL rules that’s not a catch (remember the Calvin Johnson debacle from a few years ago). Whether or not the rule is fair, the Cowboys lost and the Packers won the right to lose to Seattle.

andrew luck and peyton manning face off colts vs broncos nfl 2015

Indianapolis Colts 24 at Denver Broncos 13: It’s hard to believe that this game started with a Colts 3 and out and a Peyton Manning march down the field ending in a beautiful touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead for the Broncos. The game looked like it was going to be a blowout and it was—expect not in the Broncos favor. The Broncos defense did absolutely nothing in this game. Andrew Luck finished with 265 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions on 27 of 43 passing. He would have had 40 completions easily if he was more accurate. The two interceptions were both third down heaves in which Luck was simply trying to make something happen, so they were basically punts. The biggest problem in this game was not the drops and poor play by Denver’s receivers but the sad performance from Von Miller, Demarcus Ware, and the rest of the Broncos defensive line. Luck had a very bad game when you take in to account the time he had in the pocket.

Top Ten Biggest Obstacles For NFL Rookie Quarterbacks

johnny manziel rookie quarterbacks nfl 2015

If you have ever started a new job, then you know the feeling of trying to fit into a new place. The people around you are unfamiliar and little things like finding the break room seem difficult. We all like to be comfortable with our surroundings. A new gig is usually anything but comfortable. Now imagine what it must be like for rookie quarterbacks entering the NFL. Trying to make it as a professional QB is one of the hardest things to do in the world. There are only 32 starting jobs like that and these newbies have to overcome quite a bit to get to QB1 status. Here’s ten of the biggest obstacles that NFL rookie quarterbacks face.

biggest challenges for rookie manziel quarterbacks 2015

  1. A new environment can be a big change for young players. Bigger cities, more fan interaction, and sometimes more media to deal with can be a grind on these rookies.
  1. Training camp hazing and basic harassment from the veteran NFLers can’t be fun. If the youngsters are smart they just accept the pranks, but it can’t be a fun process for these victims.
  1. Going from the big man on campus to being the new guy in the pros is a hurdle that some QBs can never get over.
  1. How many times have we seen pro athletes in general with moochers all around them. Some players call these people their ‘entourage’. For an NFL QB, these hangers-on are in no way valuable.
  1. In the NFL sometimes a play has to be given up on. A young QB is not used to throwing the ball away to avoid disaster. In college they can take a few more chances…not here with the big boys.
  1. Unless a rookie quarterback has a desire to meet defensive ends face to face repeatedly, they better learn to get rid of the ball faster.
  1. Gaining the respect of the vets on their team is a big key to success. Some guys have that ‘it factor’. Some do not.
  1. A 16 game NFL season is tough on rookies who are used to a much shorter college season. They need to know how to stay on the field for this long campaign.
  1. Playbooks get thicker in the pros. To hit the ground running, a new NFL quarterback best be ready to put in the time to learn the team playbook. Russell Wilson was a prime example of a rookie putting in the time needed to know his playbook like the back of his hand.
  1. If these newbies think they know what speed is, then they are in for a rude awakening. NFL cornerbacks can close in on a pass in the blink of an eye. A throw that was good enough at ‘Don’t-Play-Anybody St.’ won’t cut it in The League.

Most Overrated & Underrated Soccer Players of 2014 – 2015 Season

0

2015 most underrated overrated soccer players

With the domestic seasons long underway, here’s a look at some of the most overrated and underrated players in European football.

Overrated

gerard pique most overrated soccer players 2015

Gerard Pique

It’s true that the Catalan defender was one of, if not, the best defender in the world at one point during Barcelona’s successful period under Pep Guardiola. A backup defender at Manchester United, Pique signed for his hometown club and excelled immediately at the heart of the defense alongside club captain, Carles Puyol.

However, with Pep’s departure as well as Puyol’s constant injury problems, Pique suffered as a result and hasn’t been the same defender. Despite fans still rating him as one of the best that is simply not true anymore as Barcelona’s latest trophyless season and Spain’s World Cup campaign clearly showed.

Pique himself knows that he can do better as he mentioned in a recent interview:

“Right now I’m not even in the top three [defenders] in the world. I can’t be for the season I had with Barca and the World Cup with the national team. I know that to play at Barca I have to be among the top three in the world. I also know that I can regain form and I will do. But if I can’t live up to the highest standards, I’m the first to raise my hand and say I can’t.”

vincent kompany most overrated soccer players 2015

Vincent Kompany

Like Pique, Kompany was the best defender in the Premier League and potentially in the world at one point, especially during Manchester City’s title winning season in 2011/2012. He was commanding, a great leader and scored crucial goals for the Citizens.

However, once that reputation was formed in the minds of fans and journalists alike, it wasn’t going to change for a while. Since that title winning season, the Belgian defender has been average to say the least, hardly replicating the performances that earned him such an esteemed reputation. And yet, he is still considered one of the best defenders in the world when in reality, he isn’t even the best defender in England.

While City won the league this past season, it wasn’t an easy ride whatsoever as there were many doubts lingering over City’s defense especially with Kompany’s new partner, Martin Demichelis. The Argentine – who is rather old and slow – was blamed for most of Kompany’s errors despite actually doing well in most cases.

As Michael Cox put in his Zonal Marking blog:

“Kompany remains a fine player, but he’s committed almost every kind of defensive error in the last year or so – vulnerable to pace, capable of scoring crazy own goals, mistiming tackles, getting spun high up the pitch, jumping into tackles two-footed, losing his man at set-pieces, getting caught in possession. English football seems to have a blind spot to his failings, too: one newspaper column declared him the player of the season on the morning of this game, another gave him 8/10 for this display where, again, he was responsible for all three goals. Imagine the reaction had Demichelis cost City three goals in three different ways…”

Kompany needs to emulate his old performances if he wants to be in the reckoning as one of the world’s best defenders. As of now, he’s overrated simply because he is being rated on his past reputation and performances rather than his current displays.

mario balotelli most overrated soccer players 2015

Mario Balotelli

He might be an enigma who can score all sorts of goals, but Balotelli is far from the ideal striker. Known for his antics worldwide, Balotelli still hasn’t grown up completely and can be very inconsistent and moody on the pitch as was shown perfectly in the World Cup for Italy.

If Balotelli truly wants to be the best, he needs to follow the footsteps of his former teammate, Zlatan Ibrahimovic – another player who was eccentric and known for his antics but one who eventually matured, was consistent on the field and always delivered when it came to performances and trophies.

As of now, Balotelli isn’t doing either of that for club and country – after all, there’s a reason why despite probably being their best player, AC Milan wanted to offload him and get as much money as possible.

It seems like he’s been there forever but the fact is Balotelli is just 23-years-old – he still has time to deliver and perform to his potential. But right now, he just isn’t doing that and so, is pretty overrated in our eyes, considering how most fans speak of the Italian enigma.

Underrated

willian most underrated soccer players 2015

Willian

When Chelsea forked out £32 million for the services of Willian, right under Tottenham’s noses, most fans expected an explosive winger, capable of producing something out of nothing. While that hasn’t been the case – especially as Willian only scored 4 goals in his debut season – coming off the back of a slow start, Willian has proved to be an astute piece of business for the London side.

With technical qualities, immense work rate and tracking back, the Brazilian is one of the first names on the team sheet for Jose Mourinho. Despite a trophyless season, Chelsea reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and finished 3rd in the Premier League, losing all but one game against the top seven – and Willian was a key part of that success, especially with his defensive ability which is probably the strongest out of all the Chelsea attacking midfielders.

After a 3-0 win over Stoke City where he scored, Mourinho said that Willian’s next target should be scoring more goals:

“The goal was really good but I think a player with his quality, that gives so much to the team, not just in possession but in the defensive work and balance of the team, I want to see him score more goals. He has to do that in the second season, he has to bring his game into other levels.”

If Willian can do that, he will finally start being appreciated by the rest of the world.

edin dzeko most underrated soccer players 2015

Edin Dzeko

One of those players who is barely appreciated by his own fans, it’s amazing how Dzeko isn’t rated higher. One of the most lethal strikers in world football, Dzeko has played a key role in Manchester City’s rise as one of the top clubs in Europe.

The issue with the Bosnian is that he can be very inconsistent and lazy in the eyes of fans such that one game, he would score a hat-trick and in the next game, be completely anonymous. As one City fan put it:

“An infuriating striker whose troubles of last season still haunt him now. His touch very often lets him down, his attitude veers from uninterested to appalling and the system City play doesn’t really suit him.”

However, Dzeko proved many people wrong this season as with the injury to Sergio Aguero and the patchy form of Alvaro Negredo, the Bosnian’s 16 league goals in 31 games helped City win their second league title in three years. He even earned praise from Mourinho:

“He was the third striker at the beginning of the season and when the team needed him, in crucial moments, he made the difference. He has 16 goals. Sixteen for the third striker is something spectacular. He’s not just a goalscorer. He assists, he plays.”

Dzeko as a result is close to earning a new contract at Manchester and is slowly getting the respect and appreciation that a player of his quality deserves.

Why Doesn’t the NCAA Treat Its Athletes Fairly?

2015 ncaa treating athletes fairly

The National Collegiate Athletic Association was formed in 1910 to regulate institutions, conferences, organizations, and athletes competing in intercollegiate sports. The non-profit organization states that it is “dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of student-athletes and equipping them with the skills to succeed on the playing field, in the classroom, and throughout life.”

ncaa suspends todd gurley 2015

Wow. Powerful stuff. The problem is that college athletics’ governing body has developed into an organization that appears to care nothing for those it oversees. Take the case of University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley entered the 2014 college football season as one of the top returning running backs in the nation and as a possible Heisman Trophy candidate. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder also entered his junior year as a 20-year-old at one of the South’s most respected universities. Like many of his peers, Gurley earned some cash prior to the school year.

ncaa suspends todd gurley for autograph money nfl 2015

Unlike his peers however, Gurley’s means of earning compensation, signing sports memorabilia that contained his likeness, is not permitted by the NCAA. Gurley earned roughly $3,000 for signing a variety of items that may have included things like bobbleheads, photos, and more.

Yes, the same organization whose president earned $1.7 million in 2011 (the last year that his tax returns are available) reprimanded a somewhat ordinary 20-year-old student-athlete for signing his name. Mark Emmert is the current president of the non-profit NCAA, the organization that is supposed to equip student-athletes with the skills necessary to be successful in life. Isn’t one of those skills how to earn a living?

Gurley, like every other student-athlete at NCAA member institutions, cannot profit in any fashion off of his athletic talents, yet the NCAA and others can generate millions as a result of the talents of student-athletes. Hardly sounds fair, doesn’t it?

Throw in the NCAA’s ruling on the Gurley situation and it’s enough to make any sane person mad. Gurley, who was suspended by the university while the NCAA determined its ruling, was ruled out of four games and, unbelievably, was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service and donate a portion of his $3,000 to charity. Community service, really? That must also serve the purpose of “preparing student-athletes” for the future.

Emmert’s comments on the ruling? The NCAA head proclaimed that the rules regarding compensation for athletes need to be reviewed. Revolutions like that are what make Emmert worth every penny of his almost $2 million salary. Surely, you can feel the sarcasm in that last statement.

Yes, the NCAA does some great things for student-athletes. Those at Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision), Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision), and Division II schools have the opportunity to receive athletic scholarships that cover most or all of their college expenses. As mentioned, the NCAA also does things like put on the event known as March Madness, the men’s college basketball national championship tournament.

johnny manziel ncaa autograph money 2015

What the NCAA needs to do, though, is win over those fans that it has lost with its list of epic fails, including scenarios like the Gurley incident. The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel went through a similar tale to Gurley. Manziel apparently was involved in signing some memorabilia. In the end, the former Texas A&M star missed one half of one game.

ed obannon sues ncaa 2015

The NCAA was sued by a group of former student-athletes, led by former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon, for allowing companies like EA Sports to use the likenesses of college athletes and profit from it. The video game company, which no longer uses actual player likenesses, made billions of dollars, as did the NCAA, all from the talents of the student-athletes that it is supposed to protect.

How does the NCAA win fans back? Very easily. Get out of the business of trying to regulate anything related to Division I FBS football and Division I basketball. Most of the NCAA’s rules regarding eligibility and compensation are outdated. Consider the plight of an FBS football player who wishes to transfer from, say the University of Pittsburgh to Wisconsin. That football player must, by rule, sit out a full year before he is eligible to play. A coach, say Pitt’s Paul Chryst, can transfer from one school to another with no penalty. Chryst, of course, did just that when the former University of Pittsburgh head coach accepted the head coaching job at Wisconsin in December.

It’s very simple for the NCAA: either revamp the outdated rules that govern college football (and basketball) or disband. Why a 20-year-old electrical engineering student on an academic scholarship can spend his summer earning $25 an hour as an apprentice electrician, but student-athletes like Todd Gurley cannot sell their own signature is beyond logical. If the NCAA wants to be viewed as treating its athletes fairly, the organization should consider big changes.

In much less romantic news, there was reportedly some tension for Taylor Swift when she encountered ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal at the Golden Globes after party thrown by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Swift reportedly became very upset when her ex talked to Malin Akerman during the party and danced with Rita Ortiz. At one point during the party he was reportedly surrounded by both of them and this upset Taylor to the point where she was said to have had a meltdown and had to be led out by her friend. However, eyewitnesses reported that Swift arrived at the party just as Gyllenhaal was leaving and that the two happily encountered each other at the door. Other witnesses report that Swift was at another after party with her girlfriends and Harvey Feinstein attempted to call Gyllenhaal over to where they were sitting. Feinstein wasn’t able to get Gyllenhaal’s attention but Swift promptly took her girlfriends and left the party anyway.

There have been ongoing rumors that Beyonce and Jay Z are expecting baby number two, but Beyonce’s BFF Michelle Williams has been shooting down these rumors, most recently when she was co-host for the day on The View. The rumors stem from the fact that Beyonce recently posted a picture of her at the beach with sand concealing her stomach from view. For months rumors have been fueled by a Jay Z concert where he performed a song that included the lyrics “cause she pregnant with another one.” It doesn’t help the rumor mill that Beyonce and Jay Z had publicly stated they would like to have a second child.

During a recent Access Hollywood interview Billy Bob Thornton played “Who Would You Rather” with the show’s hosts. When asked would he rather be with Reese Witherspoon or Jennifer Aniston he jokingly said that Aniston was his choice and that he had a crush on her. The truth is that a relationship of any kind would be difficult because his ex-wife is Angelina Jolie, who is married to Brad Pitt, who is Jennifer Aniston’s ex. That sounds like the plot of a bad soap opera.

Margaret Cho has come under fire this week for a racist act she put on at the recent Golden Globes Awards Show. She used her Twitter account to defend herself from those who are turning the heat up on her. Margaret denied playing the race card and made a stupid pun to lighten the mood. To do damage control Margaret gave a phone interview to BuzzFeed where she stated that the impressions of Asians she did at the Golden Globes was not meant to offend anyone and impressions are what she does. She said that since she’s Asian it is ok for her to make jokes about other Asians. Apparently a lot of Golden Globe viewers disagree with that.

That’s it for this week’s celebrity gossip. So far 2015 is starting out on the slow side when it comes to celebrity gossip, but most likely in the coming months that will change and all the hot juicy gossip will spin out of control like it always does.

2015 NFL Divisional Recap Sunday: Dez Robbery & Luck Greater Than Manning

Sunday’s playoff games offered a so-called Ice Bowl II between Dallas and Green Bay. Good to know that Fox Sports has such a creative team to name these games. We also had Andrew Luck taking on the aging Peyton Manning in a battle of the old guard versus the new. I got goosebumps watching the CBS intro for this QB matchup. That vibe went away 34 seconds later as soon as Phil Simms opened his mouth.

Dallas v. Green Bay

The Packers took control of this game on their first drive. With Aaron Rodgers not looking very stable on that bum calf, the Packers still got in the end zone to go up 7-0 on the Cowboys. Tight end Andrew Quarless was the recipient of this TD pass from #12.

The Cowboys never panicked even though you don’t want to be down early in a game at Lambeau field. Dallas was determined to stay with the run and they never wavered even when they were getting only a couple yards per carry from Murray. Romo led his Boys down the field to finally score on a pass to Tyler Clutts, who could have been on a pro wrestling tour at local high school gyms before this game for all I know. This was his second reception of the entire season! 7-7 game.

Dallas took advantage of the Packers’ screw up on the snap as Rodgers got sacked and lost the ball. The Boys were set up nicely at mid field. The turnover was costly for the Packers. Romo hit Terrance Williams for a TD strike reminiscent of his big plays versus the Lions last week. 14-7 Dallas on top.

Rodgers was clearly not himself early in this game. He never offered to scramble and really that was to his credit. It would not have taken much to put him out of the game with that leg giving him such trouble. As for Dallas, their defensive line was in charge of the line of scrimmage to this point.

Dallas continued to move the ball on their next drive and Dez Bryant finally got a ball thrown his way. It has to be frustrating for these big time receivers to be shut out in major games. Jason Whitten had a nice game and found openings consistently over the middle. Romo bobbled the snap on third and one which led to a fourth down. The field goal try was no good as it was tipped by the Packers’ Datone Jones.

Green Bay got a much needed score before the half ended. Randall Cobb had a huge game and made some key catches on this drive. Rodgers threw a perfect pass to the wide out on the sideline to set up a FG just before halftime. 14-10, Dallas still up.

Dallas’ coverage must have been smothering or Rodgers wouldn’t have been 9/17 so far in the game. Green Bay punted it away and Dallas continued to force the ball to Murray, which was the right game plan. The running back did have a big fumble on this possession where he had daylight for days and would have scored. It’s truly a game of inches, as Julius Peppers just reached Murray’s arm in time to cause the fumble before the back would have headed for glory. Packers’ ball.

packers eddie lacy runs from cowboys nfl game 2015

Eddie Lacy showed his talent as he had a 29 yard burst behind a nice fullback block. A nasty scuffle on this drive cost Green Bay a third and one, making it third and 16. That led to a FG to make it 14-13 Cowboys.

On Dallas’ next drive they got the ball to Dez for just his second catch of the day. Romo got away with a reckless throw to Whitten, but his tight end made the catch as usual. Murray stormed in to cap the drive off from a yard out. Cowboys extend the lead to 21-13. This led into another commercial for NFL mobile. Who is going to watch the Super Bowl on their cell phone? People at work? If your job requires you to work during the Super Bowl, you should dust off your resume.

Randall Cobb could have been the MVP of this game as he kept making big catches. Jordy Nelson was a non factor. Devante Adams brought the Pack to within a point on his 46 yard score from Rodgers. Adams got high praise from his QB after the game for the way he prepares each week. 21-20 Dallas.

cowboys tony romo sacked by packers nfl 2015 images

Green Bay put the hurting on an already banged up Tony Romo. Dallas punts it away to the Packers and a heating up Rodgers. The Packers marched down the torn up field with Adams making another big catch and Cobb giving the Cowboys secondary hell. The TD came on the eighth play of the drive as Rodgers found Richard Rogers for a 13 yard strike between two defenders. 26-21 after the two point attempt was no good.

Dallas would get the ball back with about nine minutes left to play. They didn’t panic at all, sticking with the run game. Murray was smashing fools late in this one. Dez had a nice catch on a low throw from Romo. Then the Dallas QB took a big sack on a play that saw some receivers open for short gains. The drive came down to fourth and two with about four minutes left to play. With Stonehenge sized stones, Jason Garret went for the throat. He dialed up a jump ball to Dez Bryant and the call seemingly worked, as Bryant made one hell of a catch. However, the Packers challenged the call and of course the call was reversed, nullifying a brilliant effort on the part of X. Instant replay is great for every instance except receptions, where apparently you have to get off the ground with the ball, sign a statement saying you caught it, take a lie detector test, then hand the ball directly to Roger Goodell to make it legal. Packers take over possession still up 26-21.

Dallas still had a chance if they could have stopped Green Bay from getting a first down. That however was not to be. Rodgers worked some magic and got lucky on a tipped pass that Cobb rounded up for a critical first down. They ran the clock out as Dallas’ offense never made it back on the field. Packers win 26-21.

green bay packers beat cowboys nfl 2015 playoffs

The Dez Bryant no catch was the story of the game, but I’m not sure Rodgers would not have been able to get the Pack close enough for a FG to still win had Dallas scored on the Bryant catch. Anything can happen though. It is a shame the refs were the story in this one at the end.

colts vs broncos nfl 2015

Colts v. Broncos

Denver looked like their fans expected on their first drive of the game. They took the ball on a methodical march down the field with little pressure on Peyton. This was after a three and out effort by the Colts. Demaryius Thomas caught the touchdown pass to make it 7-0 Broncos. This would be the best that Denver’s offense would offer all day however.

Early in the game was the only time that Denver was able to get any amount of pressure on Andrew Luck. As the game went on, the Colts’ offensive line did a better job of protecting the ALL Pro QB.

colts boom herron touchdown against broncos nfl 2015

Indianapolis’ offense got the biggest play of the game for them so far when Luck hooked up with T.Y. Hilton for a 23 yard catch. The Colts ended the drive with a six yard touchdown from Boom Herron, a great value on daily fantasy leagues FYI. 7-7 ball game.

Manning got sack swiped on their next possession. It was the break the younger Colts needed to get momentum in a road playoff game. Indy recovered and Luck was set up at the Denver 41. Luck made Peyton pay for the fumble as he threw a touchdown pass to Dwayne Allen eight plays later. Colts on top 14-7.

andrew luck and peyton manning face off colts vs broncos nfl 2015

The CBS crew made endless comparisons between Manning and Luck. I figured they would pull out a real stretch of a link with Simms having seen them use the same bathroom stall at the airport on multiple occasions.

Denver could do little on their next drive as they gave their punter a workout on this day. Indy made some plays when they got possession to get in FG position, including a 20 yard run by Luck. The oldest man alive with the ability to make clutch kicks, Adam Vinatieri, missed for just the second time all season long.

The missed FG was of little consequence. Denver could do nothing with the ball again as Manning was struggling to complete any deep balls. The guy was just not himself the past few weeks and certainly didn’t perform any better on Sunday. He had some injuries that made a difference, but I believe his arm is shot, period.

Denver got some help from their defense on the next Colts drive. Luck was picked off by Roby near mid field. Manning was off target again his next series and they were fortunate to even get a FG out of it. 14-10 Colts at the half.

Denver got the ball at the start of the second half but were no more effective then. Three and out.

Luck and the gang made short work of the Denver defense when they got possession back. They went on an 11 play drive that saw Luck hit Fleener for a big gain. That set up the eventual scoring pass to Nicks. 21-10 Colts and the game was in the hands of Indy at this point. They would have had to melted down completely to lose after this score.

Denver had no success on offense once again and had to punt. They got a break when it appeared the Colts’ return man fumbled the ball. The call was reversed however and Indy retained possession. Luck gave it right back via an INT though.

Denver scored after a 13 play drive, but they needed a TD not another FG. 21-13 Colts still on top.

After the teams swapped punts on consecutive drives, Indy finally got it going again on a long drive of their own. 13 plays later, Vinatieri hit a 30 yard FG to make it 24-13 Colts.

broncos peyton manning sacked by colts nfl 2015

That would be the final score as Manning had one last unsuccessful drive that showed his inability to hit any receiver deep. The Colts gained confidence early and never looked back. Luck is as good or better than Manning at the same point in Peyton’s early career. The 2015 version of Peyton should probably retire, but I doubt he will unless John Elway runs him off like he had to do John Fox on the Monday following the loss.

The Colts travel to New England for the AFC Title next week in the late game. They will be facing a QB who is still able to throw the deep ball, unlike Manning. And Brady will not be an easy out as Baltimore found out this past Saturday with the Golden Boy coming back twice from 14 down.

Most Overrated NFL Players Of 2014 – 2015 Season

2015 Most Overrated NFL Players Images

In the NFL millions and millions of dollars get thrown around every year. Many of the players in the league work hard for their money throughout their careers; however, some players have millions of dollars thrown at them for seemingly nothing. Let’s take a look at some of the top overrated, overpaid players in the NFL today:

eric decker most overrated bulge nfl players 2015 images

Eric Decker: Over the past two seasons, Decker has enjoyed the perks of playing with quarterback Peyton Manning. In 2012 and 2013 Decker had over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns—a significant improvement from his first two seasons with the Denver Broncos. What people do not release is that Decker had the highest drop rate in the NFL this past season, dropping over 30 percent of passes thrown his way. The New York Jets recently dropped over $30 million on the NFL drop leader, but they may not like what they receive.

russell wilson most overrated bulge nfl players 2015 images

Russell Wilson: Wilson has received the ‘Joe Flacco treatment’ since winning Super Bowl XLVIII—that is, he has been vastly overrated because of the Super Bowl victory. Make no mistake, the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl because of their record setting defense, not because of Wilson. Wilson is the perfect example of an average quarterback with a Super Bowl caliber team. Wilson is not a horrible quarterback, but he did nothing to deserve his name being put into the MVP discussion this past season.

john abraham most overrated nfl bulge players 2015 images

John Abraham: This is probably not a name you were expecting to see—after all, Abraham was had 10 or more sacks in eight of 15 years in the NFL. The problem with Abraham is that these sacks never come when his team needs them. Abraham racks up a lot of sacks against bad teams. For example, in 2013 Abraham had 11.5 sacks; but only three of his sacks came in games against teams with a winning record. Instead, most of Abraham’s came against teams like the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

jermon bushrod most overrated nfl bulge players 2015 images

Jermon Bushrod: The former New Orleans Saints offensive lineman just signed a huge 5 year contract with the Chicago Bears worth over $35 million; however, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler may be in for a rude awakening this season with Bushrod on the line. Sure, Bushrod did not give up many sacks this past season; but that is mainly thanks to quarterback Drew Brees’s ability to get rid of the ball quickly. Bushrod did, however, give up a lot of knockdowns and cause a lot of pressure for Brees. Cutler is not nearly as good as Brees when it comes to dealing with pressure and getting rid of the ball quickly; so unless Bushrod greatly improved over the offseason, Cutler may be on the ground even more than he was in 2013.

Revisiting My Super Bowl Predictions

superbowl 2015 predictions images

Back in the preseason I made some not so humble predictions about the top teams headed to Super Bowl XLIX. My memory is not as good as it used to be and neither is yours with all the digital input we let ourselves take in nowadays. So we need to take a look back at my predictions to see just how brilliant I am in terms of NFL football guruism. I hope this doesn’t hurt too terribly.

carolina panterhs vs seattle seahawks nfl divisions 2015

Seattle Seahawks – Hey they are not out of this thing yet! Sure, they have little to no offense. Marshawn Lynch is brooding over his possible removal come 2015. And Pete Carroll isn’t quite as excitable as he was last year. But they are still the defending champs until they are not anymore. How you like that John Madden logic? The fact is they are 8-3 and a projected 5th seed in the playoffs. They have four games left on the schedule and none of those games will be easy wins. Even the last game against the Rams is certainly not a guarantee, as St. Louis beat them in the first contest this season. The Hawks beat San Francisco on Thanksgiving easily but have to play them again in a couple of weeks. How they fare against division leading Arizona will tell us a lot about their chances in the post season. I am not convinced they are going to be left out of a Super Bowl rerun. But they certainly do not strike fear in teams like they did at the end of last year.

eddie royal san diego chargers beats down chris culliver san francisco 49ers 2014 nfl season images

San Francisco 49ers – I am out on this team. They can still smash mouth with the best of them on occasion, but my confidence is low on Harbaugh’s crew. A three year run in the NFC Conference Title Game was great. A fourth edition in a row is asking too much I am afraid. It looks like Jim Harbaugh will be coaching another team soon, as the Raiders and Jets have expressed interest in the guy. Teams may try a trade to get him before his contract is up with the Niners. San Fran is still a quality team, but at 7-5 they can’t afford much more in the loss column.

denver broncos vs indianapolis colts nfl playoffs 2015 images

Denver Broncos – I can see Denver getting back to the Super Bowl this year. They have looked good most of this year with Peyton Manning dominating defenses like normal. The team has been more well rounded with the amped up defensive pieces also. They have key losses this year to the Patriots and the Seahawks. Both games were at the opponents’ house and was the difference in the games. Seattle beat Denver up early but had to withstand a comeback from Peyton and company to get the win. The Patriots had no trouble with Denver at all. Chalk that one up to Belichick just having Manning’s number and Brady always trying to prove he is the better QB. The Patriots are the biggest obstacle to Denver’s Super Bowl return.

dallas cowboys vs green bay packers 2015 nfl playoffs images

Green Bay PackersAaron Rodgers may be having his best season ever. We won’t know until the end, as Green Bay judges its players by championships. The way it should be. And if Rodgers gets the Pack another ring, he will be held up above that tractor driving Brett Favre. But he needs that ring. Early in the year it looked like Green Bay was not able to play with the best in the league. They lost to Detroit and got hammered by Seattle. Pundits were not impressed. But once the team found its rhythm, they have looked like one of the top four teams in the NFL. Last week they beat the super hot Patriots in Green Bay. The result could have been different in Foxboro. The two meeting in a neutral site would be interesting. That could happen on February 1, 2015.

Those previous four teams were my highest hopes for this year’s Super Bowl. I am still with all of them except San Francisco. Seattle is my least favorite of the three. I would go with Green Bay over Denver to win the Super Bowl if I had to bet.

On to the teams I didn’t have on my radar in the preseason. The Patriots are an obvious one. I felt like they were not going to be much different than last year. No good receivers and a badly damaged Gronkowski were going to hinder the offense. That was my feeling and that was reality early in the year. However, Tom Brady keeps on working his magic by making scrub receivers relevant. Gronk has gotten more dominant every week and avoided injury so far. He even smashed a defender into a camera stand to make it clear he was back. The cornerback has not been heard from since. I still want to see how the Pats fare in the playoffs when they have to play the best of the best. The past few years have not been kind to them, as their weaknesses have been exploited in the post season.

Arizona has had the best record in the NFL most of the year. They are a tough team that is coached very well by Bruce Arians. They are leaning on a backup quarterback for the rest of the way however. Drew Stanton is playing well and it isn’t like Carson Palmer was at the top of the NFL rung of quarterbacks anyway. I still would hesitate to bet on the Cardinals to make it to the Super Bowl. They have the feel of a good regular season team that may get knocked out in the first playoff game they are in.

The other two teams that are playing at a Super Bowl level are the Eagles and Colts. Both are projected Wildcard teams at the moment, but could climb higher in the next few weeks. Philadelphia has been almost as consistent as Arizona all year long. The Colts can put up big points at will and I trust Andrew Luck as much as any QB not named Aaron Rodgers.

So there you have it, my renewed Super Bowl outlook. I think you will find my results pretty impressive once the season ends. If not, there is always next year.
