Miami Heat Shakes NBA Up With Justise Winslow Draft Steal

0

miami heat steal justise winswlo nba 2015 draft

In easily the biggest surprise of the 2015 NBA Draft, Justise Winslow dropped right into the Miami Heat’s lap at No. 10 overall. The Duke star was expected to go to the New York Knicks 4th overall, but after they passed on him the next five teams on the clock followed suit.

Rather than talk about how much of a steal Winslow at the 10th spot is, and how he will be the perfect complement to (or maybe even replacement for) Heat superstar Dwayne Wade, I’d like to talk about how close Winslow was to wearing green and white instead of red and black.

According to multiple reports that have surfaced since the conclusion of the draft, the Boston Celtics made a tremendous—like stupidly tremendous—push to move up after the Knicks passed on Winslow. The team contacted every team from the Orlando Magic at No. 5 to the Charlotte Hornets at No. 9, increasing their offer as they went down the line.

By the time the C’s got to the Bees at 10th overall, the offer had reportedly risen to an insane six draft picks including four 1st round selections. Please do not let my beautifully placed rhyme take away from the stupidity of the Celtics’ offer. Or the fact that the Hornets said no.

That’s the most unbelievable part of this craziness—Charlotte turned down four 1st round draft picks over this season and the next few in order to draft Frank Kaminsky. By agreeing to the Celtics offer, the Hornets would have no only had their future draft picks but also the entire future of the Celtics franchise. But they said no. For Kaminsky. A player who will be a small role player off the bench at best. He’s basically Ryan Anderson except not as good of a shooter but a little more well-known.

“Maybe we were going too hard at it,” said Celtics President Danny Ainge after the draft. “There was a time when I thought, ‘Woah, this is getting a little out of control. We’re putting a lot of eggs in one young player’s basket.’”

Ya think? I guess that about sums it up.

Ironically, the Hornets are now the ones stuck with the burden of proof. If Kaminsky isn’t the next LeBron James, then they obviously made a bad deal by passing up the Celtics offer.

You can change the name, logo, and overall look of the team, but I guess they’ll always be the Bobcats on the inside.

The Face in Facebook Now Has New Meaning

0

facebook gets face recognition site 2015 techNapster founder Sean Parker’s significant contribution to Facebook, according to the movie The Social Network was for them to lose the ‘The’ from The Facebook. It made the company sound catchier but maybe Sean should have suggested to lose the ‘Face’ as well. Because now, due to advancements in facial recognition technology, advertisers and big companies are after people’s faces which can apparently unlock large amounts of data from Facebook and other sites. All without our consent. Why? How? Because soon, biometrics will be the new thing and that our faces, fingerprints and voices will be able to unlock our internet data. It may sound paranoid but recording our faces is the stealthiest way to grab our info.

We’re all for taking pictures, taking selfies and group shots everywhere we go, and it’s now customary to take a picture of our dinner for an Instagram shot before we even say grace. But back when the camera was invented, many thought that it was a device not just for taking pictures, but our souls as well and many were terrified to have their picture taken. Smiles weren’t all the rage back then. Many pictures featured somber, sometimes stressed out faces. Maybe they were right all along.

We welcome the opportunity to have our picture taken but only when we’re inclined, invited and aware. But the camera was designed to mimic the human eye and when a camera looks at us when we aren’t looking back, it’s like being watched. It feels uncomfortable to be watched at a convenience store even if you don’t mean to steal anything. If you feel the same way, then what if we get our picture taken unknowingly to be used commercially? Cameras are now being used not just to take pictures but some essence of what we are.

BUY! You’re on Candid Camera

As facial recognition technology has become more advanced and affordable, many establishments were quick to capitalize on it. Companies like RedPepper and FaceFirst have systems installed in several stores and restaurants enabling them to offer regular patrons targeted deals and tag shoplifters. These require the consent of the customers (not the shoplifters) but they can be used otherwise. This means that pictures can easily be associated with our buying habits.

Now there’s this open secret that our data is being shuffled back and forth between big tech and advertising companies starting with our emails resulting in thousands of unread spam mail in our junk box. As tech keeps on advancing and users becoming more careful on where they browse, the next step is to steal our pictures either while we browse on our laptops facing our webcams or from afar being shot collectively by some stalker. These pictures can then be matched and associated with our narcissistic avatars on social media websites, unlocking our interests, every product, place or concept we ‘liked’  which later become ads to be shoved up our behinds. So even offline, our privacy can be stolen even while innocently walking down the street or on the way to work.

facebook face recognition software 2015Just a Matter of Time

Now technology was already heading that way already. It’s already there in the early stages and a code of conduct is being drafted between US privacy and trade groups as encouraged by the Obama Administration and overseen by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). However, the privacy groups believe that the discussions were getting nowhere and decided to withdraw; with privacy groups stating that the way things were going, people won’t be able to walk down the street without companies tracking their movements and recognizing them by name through facial recognition (much like in sci-fi movies where androids or people with high-tech visors focus on individuals and some info on that person appears, Okay Glass?). The guidelines are still required though, to prevent rampant stolen shots by photo harvesting drones and camera setups in every street corner making a Truman out of everybody. The NTIA will continue the hearings hoping for the return of the privacy groups.

It’s difficult to imagine a marriage between effortless image collection and the potential for use by trade groups, and the requirement of individual consent by privacy groups. Eventually some compromise will be settled with the people getting the short end of the stick. Big business will always win waving that all-important economic flag. Speaking of business, it’s high time to sell shades, caps, hoodies, umbrellas and masks.

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon A Tough Road

0

andy murray tough road at wimbledon tennis 2015 imagesThe Wimbledon 2015 draw was recently released and action starts on Monday at the All England Club. Andy Murray, the three seed at this year’s event, has what appears to be a fair draw through the first three rounds of the grass court Grand Slam with more challenging match-ups likely to follow.

Murray, in the opening round, will face the unheralded Mikhail Kukushkin. The Kazahkstani veteran, currently ranked 58th in the world, has never really been much of a factor in any Grand Slam. Heading into Wimbledon 2015, Kukushkin has just one fourth round appearance from any major, that coming from the 2012 Australian Open. Murray, who enters the match 2-0 heads up against the World No. 58, should not be threatened in the first round and he promises to improve to 3-0 overall against Kukushkin.

In the second round, Murray would face either Robin Haase or Alejandro Falla, two players that have yet to prove themselves in Grand Slams. Falla has just one fourth round appearance in a major as he made it that far at the French Open a few years back. However the Columbian’s best tennis appears to be behind him and he has only made it out of the first round of a major twice since the 2012 US Open.

Murray, instead of Falla, will likely face Haase in the second round. The Netherlands national is a player with a career victory over the Scot however, as of yet, Haase has never really lived up to the mild hype that surrounded him earlier in his career. Haase was expected to challenge players in the Top 25 a handful of years back however as of yet he has not even made the Top 30. In six previous appearances at the All England Club, Haase has made the third round just once and with Murray in his path to the round of 32, the Dutch player appears likely to falter early again this season.

Andy Murray psych check for wimbledon 2015

Murray could face a tricky opponent in the the third round. Firstly Andreas Seppi, the 25th seed at Wimbledon this year, is in the Scot’s draw to the fourth round. The Italian has not been all that notable on tour lately however he did oust Roger Federer at Melbourne Park early in 2015. With upstart Borna Coric in Murray’s draw to the round of 16 as well, there could be a competitive match in the third round for the former champion this season.

A likely fourth round opponent for Murray is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a player who will surely have the Scot’s full attention. Tsonga resurged at the recently completed French Open and, playing at his best, he’s a threat to make the late rounds of the grass court Grand Slam. The Frenchman did just that in the earlier parts of this decade although he would still be the underdog in most people’s minds should he draw Murray next Monday. Nonetheless, should Murray and Tsonga face one another in the fourth round it would definitely be one to watch.

In the late rounds of the tournament, the Scot currently shares a draw to the semis with both Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. For the former’s part, Nadal has not enjoyed a strong season so far in 2015 and Murray would likely relish the opportunity to claim a win over the Spaniard at Wimbledon. For the latter’s part, Ferrer has never really been a distinguished player at SW19 with just two quarterfinal appearances in his lengthy career. While either Ferrer or Nadal are capable of putting a strong match together, neither appears poised to upset Murray on grass at this point.

Accordingly, I expect Murray to make the semifinals at the All England Club where he would likely face either Tomas Berdych or Roger Federer. I see such a match-up as favorable to the Scot: Berdych rarely plays well in the late rounds of tournaments and Federer’s edge appears to be lost in the five-set matches. If anyone should get into Murray’s way ahead of the final, my expectation is that it would actually be Tsonga, a player with a recent win over Murray from the Canadian Masters last season.

However popular opinion is that Murray will face Novak Djokovic in the final at Wimbledon 2015. The Serb, following a surprise loss in the Roland Garros final and a questionable tune-up for Wimbledon, might just be ripe for the pickings. Arguably, Wimbledon 2015 is the Scot’s best opportunity to add to his Grand Slam title total.

Bristol Palin Staying Mum On Latest Baby Daddy & K Michele’s Killer Kindness

What a great end of the week this has been for history! The GLBT community officially and legally can’t be treated like second hand citizens, although I’m sure plenty will still try, and Bristol Palin has got another baby coming but keeping mum on the dad.

marriage equality passesMarriage Equality is Here… LBGT Can Legally Marry

Today the Supreme Court ruled that anybody can marry anybody. A major win for those who believe that they should have the right to legally marry whomever they choose in any state in America and a major loss for right wings, Christians, and pretty much any one who strongly opposes same sex marriage, homosexuals are free to not only marry who they want but to also reap the full benefits of holy matrimony.

marriage equlity bill passes supreme court 2015To say that this has been a long time coming is an understatement. It has been an up heel battle for same sex couples and those who support them. People even got married today as soon as the announcement was made. It is a major stride in a direction that shows growth in a country that so desperately needs some good news right now.

Congrats to all those lovers who are now able to marry the loves of their lives and gain the marital rights as heterosexual couples.

Now for the ratchedness…

joseline hernandez beats up karlie redd for charity 2015 gossipJoseline Hernandez Beats Up Her “Bestie?”

This bitch is out of control. Not only does she think way more of herself than she should, she obviously doesn’t believe that the rules apply to her.

It has been reported that she and fellow Love and Hip Hop “star” Karlie Redd got into a fight at a charity event in Atlanta and Joseline won. Everything was flying from weave, to legs to fists and it’s so sad because a) they are grown fucking women and they need to stop and b) it was supposed to be for charity.

Now here is what I don’t understand. First of all, the cast of LHHATL supposedly signed an agreement that they would not fight anymore.  Secondly, how they hell are you still resorting to these kinds of actions when you call yourself the fucking Puerto Rican Princess? Princesses don’t fight, they sit back, look pretty are polite and act right because they know they have a reputation to uphold and a kingdom to inherit.

So classless, ghetto and shameful. Joseline has nothing to be proud of in her life right now. She is a joke.

Bristol Palin Pregnant with Second Child out of Wedlockbristol palin pregnant again with unwanted child 2015 gossipSo here is the thing with Bristol Palin (daughter of shamed former Governor and crazy lady Sarah Palin) and people like her, they don’t live what they preach. She chick, who is pregnant with her second child (she’s not married) championed abstinence and staying true to her Christian values but she can’t.

There is nothing wrong with having them, but if you know that you can’t really live up to them, don’t brag about them. We all struggle with different things, of course, but you just put yourself in a position for people to have your ass when shit like this happens.

Palin hasn’t announced who the father of the baby is, but she is definitely not happy about it so isn’t that just a great gift for the upcoming child…being unwanted.

She writes on her blog that she wanted to be the first to let people know that she was pregnant. What should be a joyous occasion, however, doesn’t seem to be the case for her.

bristol palin hole show“Honestly, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep my chin up on this one.” “I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you. But please respect [my son] Tripp’s and my privacy during this time. I do not want any lectures and I do not want any sympathy,” she wrote in her blog post.

Keep her chin up? I guess I get it. She was 17 years old when she got pregnant withher first child during her mom’s run as vice president. She has been engaged twice and now, she is single with a second kid on the way.

The whole thing is like a bad movie where the popular girl who leads the virgin’s club is found to be a fraud. This chick was even paid more than a quarter of a million dollars by Candie’s Foundation, a non-profit organization that fights teen pregnancy by supporting abstinence work, to campaign for abstinence.

I just… I just can’t get with her. If you don’t want to have your child, you have options girl or at least put the baby up for adoption as there are so many families out there who would give it a happy home. If you don’t want a child off the start, that’s a horrible way to bring another life into this world.

k michelle gives draya michele some kind words 2015 gossipMichelle Has Some Words for Draya Michele

In the world of the washed up reality TV stars, when can you really trust someone? Everyone is out for themselves and as far as having friends, well that’s a far fetched idea that no body really commits to.

Michelle and Draya Michele, who used opt be friends I guess, recently appeared on BET Post Show and the tension between the two was palpable to say the least. It wa clear that something was going on and with the help of tweets during the show, the host asked if there was some beef.

The songstress didn’t hold back and in a calm but straight forward way she told the Basketball Wives Star that she saw some tweets and things she said, specifically that she called her ugly. Draya couldn’t say anything and K. Michelle told her,

“ I know it’s difficult to be a single mother and I’m sorry that you don’t think I’m pretty enough but I actually like myself.”

Draya’s comeback, “ I don’t even remember saying that.”

I bet you don’t boo, I bet you don’t.

Novak Djokovic Gets An Easier Start For Wimbledon

0

novak djokovic has easier start for wimbledon tennis 2015 imagesThis year, Novak Djokovic has not minded a challenge, but he’s probably feeling good about his draw for Wimbledon as he won’t face the Holy Trinity: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, until further on.

Interestingly enough, the number one ranked tennis player in the world struggled against teenager Alexander Zverev at the Boodles warm-up event losing 6-4, 6-3. The Serb struggled with Zverev’s serve, going down in straight sets marking his second grass court match of 2015. He did beat Richard Gasquet in his first grass court outing.

“I’m getting ready. I played two matches and I think that’s going to be enough to get myself ready for Wimbledon,” said Djokovic afterwards.

“Wimbledon is number one for me because it’s the most prestigious, most historic event we have. I play against Kohlschreiber in the first round there, which is one of the toughest first rounds, so I have to focus on that.”

Novak Djokovic avoided his three biggest rivals in the Wimbledon draw on Friday as the other members of the so-called Big 4 in men’s tennis were placed on the opposite side of the bracket.

Serena Williams had no such luck in the women’s draw, where she may have to get past three former top-ranked players — her sister Venus, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova — just to get to the final.

The draw at the All England Club set up some intriguing possibilities, especially with the former champions Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal — the rest of the Big 4 — grouped together in the bottom half of the men’s draw. Murray and Nadal could face each other in the quarterfinals, with Federer possibly awaiting the winner in the semifinals.

The bottom half also includes the former finalist Tomas Berdych and the former semifinalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Djokovic, the defending champion, could play a semifinal against Stan Wawrinka, who beat him in the French Open final.

Djokovic does face a potentially tricky match at the start of the tournament, though, as he will open play on Centre Court on Monday against the German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber and could face the former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the second round. Hewitt, the 2002 champion, is playing Wimbledon for the final time.

Nadal, a two-time champion, is seeded No. 10 after a disappointing beginning to his season, including only his second loss at the French Open. He could face his fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the fourth round.

Murray, who will be trying to win the tournament for a second time, was given one of the toughest possible draws, potentially facing Tsonga in the fourth round, Nadal in the quarterfinals, Federer in the semifinals and Djokovic in the final.

Federer will start his quest for a record eighth title with a match against Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina and could face Berdych in the quarterfinals.

In the women’s tournament, the top-ranked Williams could come up against her sister — also a five-time champion — in the fourth round, Azarenka in the quarterfinals and Sharapova in the semifinals in the draw’s tough upper half.

Williams, who is halfway to completing a calendar-year Grand Slam, opens play against Margarita Gasparyan of Russia. Williams lost in the third round last year and the fourth round in 2013.

Novak Djokovic, Federer Nadal & Murray Charge Into Wimbledon Plus Draws

0

rafael nadal with andy murray at wimbledon djokofic federer tennis 2015It seems like we were just covering the Roland Garros match and now we’re already back to the power four: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, charging into Wimbledon promising more edge of your seat tennis. We’ve also included the full 2015 Men’s Singles Draw Schedule for Wimbledon just below.

BIG FOUR DOMINATION  – Since 2005 Roland Garros when Rafael Nadal won his first Grand Slam title, the Big 4 of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray have combined to win 37 of the past 41 Grand Slam titles with the only exceptions the 2009 US Open  (del Potro), ‘14 Australian Open & ’15 Roland Garros (Wawrinka) and ’14 US Open (Cilic). It’s the most dominant era in the history of tennis. During the current stretch, Nadal has won 14 titles, Federer 13 titles, Djokovic eight and Murray two. The last Wimbledon champion other than one of the Big Four was No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in 2002. The foursome also have accounted for 44 of the last 48 ATP Masters 1000 titles (since ’10 Monte-Carlo).

TOP FOUR SEEDS TITLE HOLDERS – The last time a player seeded outside of the Top 4 won the Wimbledon title was in 2001 when No. 125th-ranked Goran Ivanisevic took advantage of a wild card opportunity to defeat Patrick Rafter in a five-set Monday final. This is the longest current stretch of Top 4 titles of any Grand Slam tournament. Since ’02 when No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt won the title, four other players have won the Wimbledon crown – Federer (seven times), Djokovic and Nadal (twice) and Andy Murray (once).  In fact, only seven players in the Open Era (since 1968) not seeded among the Top 4 have won the title.

[pdf-embedder url=”http://movietvtechgeeks.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/2015-wimbledon-draw-mens-singles-full-schedule.pdf”]

TOP SEED/REIGNING CHAMP – Djokovic is the No. 1 seed for the fourth straight year at Wimbledon. Last year he was ranked No. 2 and he edged out Federer in a five-set thriller. The 28-year-old Serb won the Wimbledon crown in 2011 as the No. 2 seed. Djokovic has a 45-8 career record at the All England Club and has advanced to the semi-finals or better the last five years. He also was runner-up in ’13. He is coming off his third runner-up at Roland Garros in four years (l. to Wawrinka). Djokovic is the first player seeded No. 1 for four or more consecutive years at the All England Club since Federer from 2004-08. Djokovic is guaranteed to remain No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings after Wimbledon. At the start of Wimbledon, he’s held No.1 for 153 weeks in his career, including every week since July 7 last year.

djokovic federer rafael nadal and andy murray hit wimbledon 2015 imagesTHE KING OF GRASS – Federer has a record 15 grass court titles (15-5 in finals) and a career record of 136-19 (.877) on grass, the best winning percentage in the Open Era. He’s won at least one grass court title in 11 of the past 13 years (except 2010-11). In 2007, he became the second player (Bjorn Borg) in the Open Era to capture five consecutive Wimbledon titles. Federer’s 40-match unbeaten streak at Wimbledon ended to Nadal in 2008. Borg won a record 41 matches in a row at the All England Club (five titles from 1976-80 before losing in ‘81 final to McEnroe). Prior to Federer’s winning streak, he had a 16-11 career record on grass from 1999-2002. Since 2003-present he is 120-8 on grass. He comes into Wimbledon with a 34-6 match record on the season and off his eighth career title in Halle (d. Seppi). The 33-year-old Swiss is 4-2 in finals this year. Two years ago Federer won his record-tying seventh Wimbledon title, defeating Murray. Federer tied Pete Sampras and William Renshaw for the most singles titles at the All England Club. At 30, Federer became the oldest singles champion since Arthur Ashe (31) in 1975. Federer is making his 17th consecutive appearance at Wimbledon and he’s reached the quarter-finals or better in 11 of the last 12 years. This is the 13th straight year he’s a Top 4 seed. Last year as No. 4 seed he lost in a five-set final to Djokovic.

ALL-TIME GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONS – Federer is the all-time Grand Slam titles leader and Nadal is tied for No. 2:

Grand Slam Finals W-L Wimbledon Titles
1) Roger Federer 17-8 7
2) Rafael Nadal 14-6 2
    Pete Sampras 14-4 7
4) Roy Emerson 12-3 2
5) Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver 11-5 & 11-6 5 & 4

FEDERER GRAND SLAM STREAK —  This is Federer’s record 63rd consecutive Grand Slam tournament played. Federer’s streak began at the 2000 Australian Open and he is the only player to compete in every Grand Slam singles draw in this century. There are six other players in the Top 10 longest consecutive Grand Slam tournaments played, including Feliciano Lopez (54) and David Ferrer (51). Here is a look at the Top 10 longest streaks in the Open Era and players competing at Wimbledon in bold:

Legal Wranglings Begin For Aaron Hernandez Co-defendant

aaron hernandez co defendent legal wranglings of police coercion 2015While Aaron Hernandez’s legal team is working overtime to have a judge overturn his first-degree murder conviction due to possible jury corruption, the former New England Patriot‘s tight end’s co-defendant is claiming police coercion to keep evidence out of his trial. Carlos Ortiz is now on trial for the June 2015 shooting death of Odin Lloyd along with Ernest Wallace.

Defense attorney John Connors said at a hearing on a motion to suppress that police acted improperly when they questioned Carlos Ortiz about the June 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd. Police misstated the Miranda warning and used coercive tactics, suggesting Ortiz was being used by Hernandez, the defense said.

carlos ortiz claims police coercion with john connors 2015“We believe he did ask for an attorney and that was not followed up on,” Connors said. “We believe the tactics were coercive. We believe it was not a voluntary waiver. We believe he was coerced into taking a lie detector test. Pretty much on every possible way they were wrong.”

Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, a third defendant, have pleaded not guilty to murder charges. Hernandez was convicted of the killing in April and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Prosecutors say Ortiz and Wallace helped Hernandez carry out the killing.

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. John Moran acknowledged in court Friday that he suggested to Ortiz during questioning that Ortiz was a “patsy” or the “throwaway guy” for Hernandez.

Judge Susan Garsh did not make a decision on the defense request. The hearing is to continue Tuesday.

Ortiz appeared in Bristol County Superior Court after an earlier appearance with Wallace for a status conference. It was their first time in court since Hernandez was convicted.

The parties discussed trial schedules for the two men, who will be tried separately.

Prosecutors said Ortiz’s trial will take about four to six weeks and Wallace’s trial will take about six to eight weeks.

Wallace’s attorneys requested a Feb. 1 trial date. But the judge suggested pushing the date to March 1 because of her schedule. Ortiz’s trial would start sometime late next spring.

Taylor Swift Knocks Out Beyonce Jayz & Ed Sheeran To Rescue: Celebrity Gossip Roundup

beyonce jay z taylor swift selena gomez affleck 2015 gossipWell, it looks like Beyonce and Jay Z are days away from officially being dethroned off the top of the Forbes highest-earning celebrity couple. This year Forbes will be ranking the world’s top earning stars by annual income only and this has lead to two new faces reigning on the top of the list. Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris are the ones who are responsible for the take-down of Beyonce and Jay Z. And it’s not been days, it’s happened already. We knew Tidal was going to cause a crash of cold water of Beyonce and Jay Z as fan backlash has been mounting.

beyonce jay z knocked off forbes by taylor swift calvin harris 2015 gossipAs far dating goes, Swift and Harris might be considered a new couple but that hasn’t stopped them from making a big splash in the world of celebrity power couples. Together earning $146 million, they overpower Bey and Jay by nearly $36 million.

All that money is coming from their success in the music and entertainment business. Taylor, for example, could arguably be called the most popular artist in the world. After her release of1989 Taylor, who already had loyal country fans, gained the attention of the pop music crowd as well. As for Calvin, he actually topped Forbes’ list of world’s highest-paid DJs. He has collaborated with big names such as Rihanna and Kesha and he has been able to take over not only EDM-related events but also such festivals as Coachella, allowing him to have a broad fan base as well.

On top of their music, both Taylor and Calvin are involved in successful endorsement deals. Taylor is lending her name and branding to companies such as Coke, Keds and Sony. Meanwhile, Calvin has become the face of Giorgio Armani and Sol Republic headphones.

If this relationship is to last, these two have the potential to have a long-time reign atop Forbes’ list.

tyler posey on hoda kotb show for miley cyrus 2015Over at the Today show, Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey stopped by on Thursday to chat with hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee. While on the show both hosts pried at Tyler to reveal whom his first kiss was. Tyler revealed he was just a kid at the time when a Disney star and him locked lips.

Well, there are plenty of potential Disney stars that he could be talking about such as Demi Lovato or Selena Gomez. However, it wasn’t long before the hosts dropped the right name and Tyler gave in and revealed they had guessed it. So who was it?

Hannah Montana star, Miley Cyrus!

Tyler went on to explain that they had actually met before her Hannah Montana days. According to Posey they actually met on the Toronto set of a show her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, had been a lead on (assumedly Doc). Miley and him quickly befriended each other and hung out constantly to the point that their relationship grew into somewhat of a boyfriend/girlfriend scenario. This being said, Tyler added that they only shared “one kiss one time.”

I wonder what Tyler thinks of her new image and antics these days?

Do Torrent Sites Really Affect Media Companies’ Bottom Line?

0

do torrent sites really affect media companies pirate bay 2015Piracy has long been blamed on the revenue decrease of various media companies including film, television, music, gaming and software. Long before torrents were invented, these companies have been plagued ever since the introduction of recordable media to the consumer. But these companies go on producing, growing or failing. However, their failure has often been reported due to other factors. Hardly any news of failure has been attributed to continuous leeching of revenues due to illegal downloads. But that doesn’t mean their bottom line doesn’t get dragged down with every downloaded file. So has the downing of The Pirate Bay and other file sharing sites stop a bleeding artery or simply soothed a scratch? The answer may lie in a recent study conducted by Carnegie Melon University. Hopefully, they find the time to solve once and for all, whether coffee is good or bad for the body.

The study dealt with monitoring consumer behavior during blocks of copyright-infringing websites such as Pirate Bay and KickAss Torrents. The team that conducted the study had access to data from the UK from 2011 to 2013 when the High Court ordered ISPs to block the Pirate Bay and 19 other websites.

Copyright holders claimed that there had been slight benefits whenever a copyright-infringing site is shut down such as what happened with MegaUpload. Many argue though that users would only access alternative sites for every blocked pirate haven. If Pirate Bay is shut down, KickAss Torrents visits increase. If KAT is shut down, other sites would take its place and once users have access to a particular torrent file, there’s really no stopping the download. That may be true for the more tenacious users but when multiple sites are down at the same period, some users have no choice but to go legit. A tentative conclusion to this study is that the more torrent sites go offline, some torrent users have the tendency to go legit, given a viable service is available like iTunes or Netflix.

That would mean that cutting off one head of the hydra, doesn’t really affect the media companies’ sales. You’d have to mortally wound the beast to actually have any effect. Doing so like what happened in the UK has marginally increased sales but the question is whether the increase is due to conversion of real pirates or the return of the ones who set sail to pillage and plunder.

In a continuously fluctuating world of haves and have-nots, it’s often debated that the haves who can afford to pay for their entertainment continue to be the constant paying customers for media content, keeping these companies in the market; while the have-nots who used to settle for nothing, now have torrents and streaming sites for media such as music, movies and TV. In this widely debated argument, film studios and music labels hardly lose anything because their customer base largely stays the same, the paying haves, the ones who put up with antiquated distribution models of media companies; while the have-nots who have no intention to pay, don’t have access or can’t pay at all, now have a means to get what the haves are paying for. Quite unfair for both the copyright holders and the real paying customers. By blocking sites like Pirate Bay, it just denies downloaders their content and doesn’t really affect the studios’ bottom lines.

online piracy kills cinema 2015

So piracy is also a matter of access. Deny access to piracy sites and consumers either go legit or bide their time. But denial of access goes both ways. When studios deny access to their content to consumers, these consumers resort to piracy and media companies cry foul. Why would studios deny access when it’s in the best interest of both parties not to do so? Denial of access comes in the form of overpricing, geo-locking and other bad distribution models that need to catch up with today’s digital landscape. We do not justify piracy since it’s just plain wrong but the way products are being distributed really needs some correcting.

Here are some concerns often discussed in forums:

  • Overpricing – consumers complain that prices of DVD or Blu-ray copies of new movies are often exorbitant, except maybe when these sets include special tidbits like the xenomorph head which acts as the casing for the Alien quadrilogy DVDs. Instead of charging fifteen plus dollars for a Blu-ray copy of new blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy, inducing nerdgasms to only those who can afford them, distributors should charge, say five dollars and everyone who has a DVD, Blu-ray or computer can enjoy the movie. What happens with the former is that media companies get their sales and wait for the pirates to pillage that new release. With the latter, there’s little reason for anyone to pirate the movie and that tiny sugary feeling of non-guilt is worth more than five dollars.
  • Quality – yours truly just finished watching a certain Season 2 episode of Supernatural, Hollywood Babylon (for those not familiar, it’s a classic). It’s a parody about some studio making a crappy movie. The point is, many studios nowadays come up with explosive box office bombs such as Cutthroat Island, Mars Needs Moms and John Carter that are way more expensive for their own good. (John Carter was a nice movie by the way, just not much re-watch value). It would be a dishonor to the consumer if they’d have to put up with Item 1 for these movies. So instead of watching them, these movies find their way to the digital Caribbean to be downloaded for the sake of the bored and the curious. It also happens to be a reason why studios fail, putting out failure after failure, as well as bad decisions by suits (referencing the episode mentioned). Fortunately for Disney, they’re too big to fail. It’s hard to blame pirates for this one.
  • Distribution or Business Models – It used to be troublesome for many to buy that one hit single without having to buy the whole album along with the excrement or mediocrity that comes with it. Now it’s not, thanks to services like iTunes (Thanks, Apple). Unfortunately, that’s still the case when it comes to physical media distribution. Simply put, customers are forced to buy a haystack for a pin they already see. Perhaps if music labels would just release their top 20s on one CD every other week, then many would benefit, the labels, the artists and the consumers. Then there’s licensing and syndication for movies and TV shows which is tied into the geo-locking issue leading to Australia’s VPN problems. The latter actually has led some paying users to resort to piracy either through VPNs or torrents because they couldn’t access what they actually pay for. For example, travelling customers cannot access the US Netflix library in Australia or in other countries which they find preposterous even if given the excuse of exclusive airtime deals with local Australian cable and TV companies. Not everyone has computers or smart TVs so producers needn’t worry about their cable and TV deals but they need to address the model as soon as possible because that no-computer-demographic is dwindling fast.

Coming back to the topic of access, many people in the same forums would gladly pay for their media instead of opening a can of worms and spilling it on their computers in search of torrents that they want; given that they have access anywhere, anytime and for reasonable prices. So does denying access to torrent sites affect the media companies’ bottom line? Only marginally, but they can actually worry less about torrent sites and their bottom lines would come out on top if they fix their business models fast and soon.

Catching Up With THE BACHELORETTE Season 11

the bachelorette kaitlyn wake 1107 images 2015Since it is now the 11th season of ABC’s The Bachelorette, it is not a huge surprise that they have chosen to throw as many curveballs into the show this time around as possible. From the very beginning, this season was unlike anything we have seen before on the show.

the bachelorette two season 11 2015This season began with two potential bachelorettes, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Britt Nilsson. While both women share the experience of being on season 19 of The Bachelor, there doesn’t seem to be much else these two ladies have in common.

Kaitlyn Bristowe is a 30-year-old dance instructor living in Vancouver. She is outspoken, sarcastic and can either be found cracking a joke or laughing at one. On the other-hand, Britt Nilsson, a 27-year-old waitress in Hollywood, California, is much more soft-spoken and seemingly more serious when it comes to interacting with potential partners.

kaityln bristown kissing chris strandburg bachelorette season 11 2015Both women were present as 25 male bachelors arrived in various modes of transportation – including limos, hot tub cars, and cupcake mobiles – as they introduced themselves to not one, but both of the bachelorettes. Filled with plenty cringe-worthy moments, the men had to walk up to each one of the potential bachelorettes one at a time as they stood a few feet a part in front of the bachelorette mansion’s entrance. One particular hard-to-watch scene was when one of the contestants decided to use the same spiel of admiration to both ladies, who were obviously in hearing distance of each other.

After many expressed opinions from both men on #TeamKaitlyn and #TeamBritt, the second episode revealed that our full-time bachelorette for this season would be Canada’s very own Kaitlyn Bristowe.

sumo hot guys for kaitlyn bachelorette 2015 season 11Just when we thought we had said our final goodbyes to Britt, the producers decided to throw in another twist. Brady, one of the bachelors who initially voted for Britt, decides that it is best he leaves the bachelor mansion and goes after Britt, as he feels she is the one who “has his heart.” Throughout each episode there have been some glimpses into the status of relationship of Britt and Brady, including an introduction of Brady to Britt’s mother.

So what other twists and turns does this season of The Bachelorette have for us? Well for those of you who watched Andi Dorfman’s season and are familiar with the titled villain Nick Viall, he is back for more. Nick Viall joined the cast in week 4 and definitely caused some upset amongst the remaining men. Kaitlyn reveals that she had connected with Nick over social media and text message and felt she needed to give him a chance when he approached her looking to have a shot at her love. Nick continues to rock the bachelorette boat, when it is revealed to the audience that he and Kaitlyn had sex in the sixth week of shooting. Although it is not unheard of for contestants to have sex on the show, it is a first to happen outside of the established rules of doing so within the fantasy-suite.

the bachelorette season 11 man dancing 2015This rebellion against The Bachelorette norms has put Kaitlyn under much scrutiny, with media, fans and even contestants shaming her overtly sexual ways. Contestant Ian even decided to leave based on his observation that it seemed as though Kaitlyn was “here to make out with a bunch of dudes on TV.”  The scandal has brought up much discussion about whether the show is “slut-shaming” Kaitlyn by presenting her in such an excessively sexual way, in order to gain media attention and shake up the show. Nevertheless under all this scrutiny, I find it quite impressive how Kaitlyn continues to she so reassured of her actions and herself, despite all the upset. She chooses to be very open with her decisions and refuses to feel guilty for exploring the physical aspects of her relationships with the bachelors.

shawn booth confronts kaitlyn on the bachelorette catching up 2015At the end of episode 7 (week 6), contestant Sean is taken back by Kaitlyn’s choice of giving the group date rose to another man, as he felt so sure of the connection they had. He decides to confront Kaitlyn in her hotel room. His intense demeanor confuses Kaitlyn, which leads her to assume that he found out about her and Nick’s time behind closed doors (at this point only the audience knows). The show leaves us waiting till next episode to see if Kaitlyn and Nick’s secret will be spilled to all of the remaining contestants, as well as how Sean will resolve his frustrations towards Kaitlyn’s choices.

Kaitlyn Bristowe is definitely a unique bachelorette, which when tied in with the unique set-up of the season, makes for some good reality television.

Windows 10 is Almost Here, Are You Ready for It?

0

Earlier today my boss called me and asked a question. Why is there an icon in his system tray similar to the Start Button? That icon appeared on his Windows 8.1 powered Lenovo C440 All-in-one. Yes, my boss uses Windows 8.1 and he’s completely fine with it. Well, he has me around to get around it. And yes! I said, it’s finally here! That new addition to the system tray is the new Get Windows 10 icon which appears in all Windows 8.1 systems qualified for Microsoft’s free upgrade. I was expecting that icon to appear as it’s one of the ways to know that a system can download Windows 10 for free. Microsoft recently made it official. July 29, 2015 is the launch date for the much-anticipated Windows 10.

How to Get It

As Microsoft earlier announced, the upgrade is free for users of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8.1 except for Enterprise versions. For Windows 8.1 systems, eligible users will see the icon I described earlier. When the user clicks the icon, it will start a process of configuring Windows Update to download upgrade files and queue the device to the upgrade server. The upgrade may not begin immediately but will be put on queue.

The same goes for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1. The icon won’t appear automatically unless the user installs recommended updates. I run a Pro version at work and checked for the icon but haven’t found it (yet). What I did find is the Windows\System32\GWX (Get Windows 10) folder that was installed by update KB3035583. I’ve yet to see the icon on the system tray or may not entirely since my machine is connected to a domain.

Starting July 29, 2015, Windows 10 will also be available on new systems released by various manufacturers. For system builders, Windows 10 CDs and licenses will also be sold in stores with Windows 10 Home version on sale at $119.00 and $199.00 dollars for the Pro version.

For anyone else who wants to try out Windows 10 if it’s worth the upgrade, join Microsoft’s Windows Insider program to be able to download ISO images for installation on test machines or virtual machines. Be warned though if you intend to use Windows 10 Preview as a working platform. It is the best way to do real live testing but be sure to back up your data. There’s also a possibility that the Insider Preview will be updated to the final release.

windows 10 almost here ready for it images 2015

What to Expect

Importantly, traditional Windows users will not be embroiled (much) in the user interface snafu that is Windows 8. The Start Menu is back, the OS boots to the desktop and many elements is where they’re supposed to be. For tablet users, Windows 10 switches to tablet mode and displays the Start Screen with the familiar live tiles of Windows 8.1. On desktops and laptops equipped with touch screens, users can easily switch between desktop and tablet mode.

Many settings have been ‘simplified’ but the traditional control panel is still available if you know where to look. Though some settings such as turning Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on and off can be found on the Notifications screen in the system tray, same as you would on a smartphone. Compared to Windows 7, the system will boot and perform faster. Windows 7 users who have shied away from Windows 8 can expect a rather flat interface with some Aero elements included.

One major change is the Cortana personal assistant which more powerful systems can surely take advantage of. It’s Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Siri. Windows 10 also debuts the new Edge browser codenamed Project Spartan. It’s a completely new browser which coexists with Internet Explorer. Another new development is the addition of virtual desktops which have been a staple Linux for years now. Better late than never.

And finally, there’s Windows Hello, a biometric security component which should work on systems with existing fingerprint readers. New systems will soon be available to take advantage of its fingerprint and facial recognition. Current webcams cannot make use of Windows Hello unless they make use of Intel’s Realsense technology.

Upgrade Concerns

There are three important questions that pop to mind whenever people are faced with the prospective ‘upgrade’ to a new operating system. Usability, Capability and Compatibility. First is whether or not they’ll be able to use it easily. The best, honest answer I can give is that it should be easy enough. It will take some getting used to. It’s not quite reassuring for users that are uninitiated with Windows 8.1. Windows 10 mixes both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The most important of which is the return of the Start Menu and default booting to desktop. The Start Menu reflects the mixing of old and new technologies from Windows 7 and 8.1 and there are several features that should make life easier for new users. The Start menu combines the traditional Start Menu to launch programs on the left side and on the right, a mini Start Screen to launch what Microsoft now calls universal apps (which can also be used on Windows tablets and Windows Phone).

Second question, can the system handle it? Unlike before when new OS versions call for new hardware, both Windows 8 and Windows 10 have very little requirements. Computers as old as seven years can easily handle it since Microsoft seeks to gain as much coverage as possible. The minimum requirement for Windows 10 is a computer that has a processor running at 1 GHz and above, 1 GB of RAM, at lease 16GB of storage and a minimum resolution of 1000 x 600. Basically any system that can run Windows 7 will be able to run Windows 10.

Third question, will all my programs run? Almost all programs designed to run on Windows 7 and Windows XP should have relatively no problems with Windows 10, though some low-level system utilities may need updates from developers. The Windows 10 compatibility checker should point out whatever issues may exist. Windows 10 will also run all apps designed for Windows 8.1.

Are you Ready to Lose These?

Unfortunately, some programs will no longer be available on Windows 10. Desktop Gadgets introduced on Windows Vista will no longer be available. Built-in drivers for floppy disk drives have been removed as well as built-in DVD playback. What many people complain in forums is the removal of Windows Media Center first introduced in Windows XP Media Center Edition which users can use to watch and record television and play local media files. Theoretically, it could still run for users who downloaded the Windows 8 Media Center Pack and have the product key. Hearts fans might be disappointed since it won’t be included in Windows 10.

But for every loss, there’s a replacement. After Windows 8 took away Solitaire, Windows 10 brings it back as the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. Hearts will be replaced with the equally cerebral and addictive Candy Crush Saga. Instead of desktop gadgets, there are live tiles and a notification area. Sadly, there’s no replacement for WMC as Microsoft justifies its loss to a small dwindling user base. Development on WMC has been stopped since 2009 and made into an add-on for Windows 8.1. WMC users will have to keep their Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 systems for the time being or run them in a virtual machine.

Overall, Windows 10 should be a big leap forward for Windows 8.1 users and Windows 7 holdouts. XP users are urged to move on and purchase new systems unless there are compelling economic and compatibility issues at hand. Under the hood, Windows 10 is faster and has much more to offer. It’s not as visually compelling as Windows 7 but it shouldn’t hold users back. There’s no need to fear tiles since they’re supposed to be walked on. With biometric security, Bitlocker encryption and constant updates, Windows 10 should be more secure.

With regards to my boss, I’m excited to click that icon of his but I need his explicit permission which he’ll only give when he sees Windows 10 in person and he’s also wary of that unlikely danger the upgrade could end up temporarily bricking or slabbing his Lenovo All-in-one.

HANNIBAL 303 Keeps Secondo Slow

Another slow episode in season 3, Secondo just scratched the surface of Hannibal’s troubled past. It also posed the question of why Hannibal is the way he is. The episode uses the themes expressed in Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Rising novel to try and explain why Hannibal is the cannibal serial killer he is. Unlike in the book, the characters question if his experiences really drove him off the deep end or if Hannibal would have been a cannibal anyways.

The episode begins with Bedelia and Hannibal talking about what it was like to connect with Will again. Hannibal simply says that “it was nice” and that Will “knew where to find me.” Bedelia is now clearly settled in to her life as wifey. She presses Hannibal to sort out his feelings about forgiveness towards Will, but it shows that she no longer fears Hannibal. So, is she now his willing accomplice?

The show cuts to Will who has now discovered Hannibal’s childhood home in Luthuania. A creative sequence begins with Hannibal and Will that feels a bit like filler, but is interrupted by a gun shot. Will looks up to see a beautiful women shoot a duck and take it back to her home. The woman begins to pluck the duck’s feathers and slice it open almost identical to Mr. Hannibal.

This is when we see the show switch quickly over to Hannibal slicing up a freakin’ human arm for dinner. Hannibal is having the ever annoying Sogliato, the pretentious academic that challenged him over his knowledge of Dante in the opening episode of the season. In the most exciting sequence of the episode, Hannibal looses his temper with the babbling Sogliato and stabs him in the head with an ice pick. The man laughs hysterically and goes blind at the same time. Bedelia, shocked at Hannibal’s sudden loss of control, pulls the pick out.

hannibal second recap keeps it slow images 2015

Hannibal in his sadistic and cruel fashion tells Bedelia, “Let the record show, you technically killed him.” It’s at this moment you realize that Bedelia is more of a captive to Hannibal than an actual lover because he is willing to turn on her without any guilt.

We soon find out that Jack Cawford is alive. Hannibal most likely left Crawford alive on purpose as well. Crawford meets police inspector Pazzi at a church and explains to him that he’s not there to catch Hannibal, but to find will. I guess he’s there as some kind of one man support group? Lord knows Will needs it!

When Will finally makes his way to Lecter’s estate, he discovers a huge cage that houses a starving man. Startled by the young woman who pulls a gun on him, Will discovers that the man is her prisoner. The woman’s name is revealed to be Chiyoh. We don’t know how she came in to Hannibal’s life, but she apparently knows him pretty well. She explains to Will that Hannibal witnessed the prisoner kill and eat his sister. This explanation deviates from the novel Hannibal Rising as it was a group of Nazis that ate Misha and forced him to eat her as well. Personally, the story with the Nazis is more interesting.

Will doesn’t buy this is as Hannibal’s definitive “origin” story, he believes Hannibal was pretty much just born bad. In a confusing scene, Will decides to free the man. Instead of running off like any rational person would, the man attacks Chiyoh. Chiyoh then fights him off and shoves a knife in his throat. Will says he did this so that he could see what Chiyoh would do.

But why? Chiyoh says that is something Hannibal would have done and that he would have been proud of Will. Seeing that Will is so attached to Hannibal psychologically, she agrees to help will find Hannibal. She knows what it’s like to be so attached to him. Will is clearly showing similar traits to Hannibal and this is extremely troubling.

In the final scenes between Hannibal and Bedelia, we are again taken back by how the relationship between Hannibal and Bedelia continues to change. Hannibal is cruel to her one minute and loving the next. In fact, as she takes a hot bath Hannibal washes Bedelia’s hair. As they speak, she reveals that she also knows about his doomed little sister Misha. Hannibal tells her that he recognizes that Mischa influenced him, but that he forgave her for that influence. I can feel a collective eye-roll from the audience because seriously, that can’t possibly be the only thing that made Hannibal the monster he is.

As Bedelia and Hannibal chat further over the piano, Bedelia pushes that there is only one way for Hannibal to forgive Will. In the show’s closing line Hannibal utters that in order to forgive Will he has “to eat him.”

This season’s viewership is currently pretty low bringing in below 2 million viewers and the show is not doing itself any favors. The show is building its momentum too slowly without any of the shocking twists and turns it had in the past. Some of the artistic sequences are beginning to feel forced and they don’t seem to make much sense at all. Sure, they look pretty, but are they really adding to the story? I always felt like this show would bloom even more on Netflix if they could jump right out of some of the filler content and get to the real slicing and dicing. A girl can dream, but if this masterpiece is canceled, it would be Bryan Fullers’ own fault.
