Champions League Midweek Preview 1: 2015 Season

champions league midweek preview arsenal vs bayern munich soccer 2015 imagesArsenal vs Bayern Munich

The Gunners have endured a torrid time in the Champions League thus far, having lost their first two games. The Premier League heavyweights were handed a 2-1 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb at the Maksimir Stadium in their opening game of the 2015/16 Champions League campaign. The north Londoners were up against reigning Greek champions Olympiacos in their second game at the Emirates Stadium and against all expectations, the hosts were handed a 3-2 defeat by the Greek visitors.

The successive defeats have increased the pressure on Arsene Wenger’s men as they prepare to host reigning German champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday. The Bavarian giants have been in irrepressible form this season, having won all of their first nine games of the league campaign so far. They have also registered successive wins in the Champions League over Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos and sit atop their group standings.

The kind of form Pep Guardiola’s men have exhibited so far has made them firm contenders for the Champions League. The addition of Douglas Costa, Arturo Vidal and Kingsley Coman has come off extremely well as the trio have taken to their new team like a duck to water.

The kind of situation Arsenal find themselves in makes it a must-win game for them, or at the very least secure a draw. But looking at the way the team’s fortunes have panned out either of the results could be unlikely for the Gunners.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Real Madrid

In one of the biggest matches of the third round of the Champions League this season, reigning French champions Paris Saint-Germain will be up against Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Parisians will play host to Rafael Benitez’s men at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Heading into the clash both the teams have a 100 per cent record in Europe this season.

Real Madrid have registered comprehensive wins over Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo, while Paris Saint-Germain have done the same. As a consequence, the match between the two sides is expected to be the decider for the group winner.

The match has an interesting sub-plot as Angel di Maria – who moved to the French capital earlier this summer after a solitary season at Manchester United – will be up against his former side. Interestingly, the last time the Argentine played for Los Blancos was the final of the 2014 Champions League where he helped his side to a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid to clinch them their coveted La Decima. The Argentina international was deservedly declared the Man of the Match in the final and will be eager to prove a point against his former employers when he takes the field in the midweek.

Real Madrid hasn’t been entirely convincing in the early season so far as they have played out three draws out of the eight league games, amidst accusations of Benitez resorting to defensive football. It will be interesting to see what the former Liverpool boss comes up with when Real Madrid face their first credible opposition in Europe this term.

Lamar Odom’s Kardashian Miracle

lamar odoms kardashian miracle images 2015 gossipJust when the odds were nearly all against him, Lamar Odom looks like he’s going to have a full recovery, and having his wife Khloe Kardashian with him through this was definitely a big help. Doctors at the hospital have upgraded his condition as he is now breathing completely on his own without the aid of an oxygen mask or ventilator.

Doctors are keeping him on an oxygen mask though as a way to bring up his oxygen levels for better recovery of his vital organs that were failing earlier this week. His heart is doing very well, and his kidneys have begun to respond also. His two other organs that were reportedly faily are still not responding so he’s not out of the woods yet, but he’s making some amazing progress on his journey out.

As someone who has gone through this with a family member, this is truly a miracle, and I have to give Khloe Kardashian credit for being there the entire time for Lamar. Just having a loved one (even an estranged one) can make all the difference in someone’s recovery.

He truly was just a minute away from dying, but it looks like Khloe may have given him a reason to fight to live. I am not going to be surprised in the least if they wind up reconciling before the court recognizes their divorce. They’ve had a strong bond through thick and thin, and this near tragedy is often the type of thing that brings couples back together. It truly could not have been scripted better for “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” if I must say so myself.

Odom began to regain consciousness on Friday.

He was found unconscious Tuesday afternoon at the Love Ranch Vegas brothel in Crystal, Nev., about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas. He had taken cocaine, alcohol and 10 doses of an herbal sexual-enhancement drug during a four-day stay at the brothel, authorities said.

Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, Odom’s estranged wife, has been with him at the hospital. Kardashian, whose divorce from Odom is not final, has been making medical decisions about his treatment, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Times earlier in the week.

Kardashian and her family members Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner have released statements saying they will not be posting to social media during Odom’s health crisis.

Alvina Alston, a spokeswoman for Odom’s aunt, JaNean Mercer, told The Times that Odom was able to open his mouth and speak on Friday.

Another source close to the situation told The Times on Friday, “Lamar is conscious and was able to say hi to Khloe, but his condition remains guarded.”

Officials have sent blood samples to be tested hoping to find out what drugs may have played a role in Odom’s condition.

Rafael Nadal Fighting Back

0

rafael nadal fighting back 2015Rafael Nadal, following what has been a precedent-setting season for all the wrong reasons, appears to be rediscovering some of his touch. The Spaniard has only contested two ATP events and a Davis Cup match since exiting from the 2015 US Open early. However, the results of those matches suggest that he may be a major factor at the upcoming ATP World Tour Finals (November 15th to 22nd).

Last week in Beijing, Rafa cruised through the first four rounds of the 500-series event with only one lost set ahead of the final. Nadal’s string of victories in China included straight-set wins over both Canada’s Vasek Pospisil and Italy’s Fabio Fognini. Importantly, the latter is the player that eliminated the former World No. 1 from the Flushing Meadows draw, perhaps the strongest evidence that there is something in Nadal’s game now that had not been present just a handful of weeks back.

So far this week, at ATP Shanghai, Nadal has shown that, at this point in his career, he is once again capable of putting back-to-back tournaments together in back-to-back weeks. That is generally a very difficult feat on the ATP Tour, one that only the very best players usually accomplish.

In Shanghai, a Masters Series 1000 event, Nadal has thus far defeated Ivo Karlovic, Milos Raonic, and Stan Wawrinka. The Spaniard has Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (Head-to-head: Nadal 8-3) to best in the semifinal to set up what would likely be a championship showdown against Novak Djokovic, a semifinalist in Shanghai who himself still needs to beat Andy Murray to make the final.

ATP staff, writing at ATPWorldTour.com, have noted Nadal’s improved play, citing the win over Wawrinka in particular:

“Rafael Nadal’s growing confidence was clear for all to see as the Spaniard dismissed Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-1 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters and claim his 300th win at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level.”

In watching Nadal play against Wawrinka, I noted that there certainly was a razor sharpness to Rafa’s ball striking. Part of that, I think, is actually due to the Swiss player being below par ever since Roland Garros. Even with both the Flushing Meadows deep run and with the title in Tokyo, Wawrinka still has not beaten a Top Ten player in months. I think the Swiss No. 2 is less motivated following his achievement in Roland Garros, and the best players will expose that in both Paris and London over the next months.

But there is also something extra in Nadal’s game right now that has not been there in 2015. Nadal had not yet qualified for the ATP World Tour finals at the start of Shanghai, but that qualification appears to be imminent. I have him as a second favorite to win the year-end event at this point, behind only Djokovic, with my complete list of favorites below.

1. Djokovic
2. Nadal
3. Roger Federer
4. Kei Nishikori
5. Andy Murray
6. Tomas Berdych
7. Wawrinka
8. David Ferrer

T.I. Backtracks Quickly On ‘Barbershop’ Comments

ti backtracks on barbershop comments 2015 gossipIn the world of the rich and famous, you HAVE to watch what you say because social media will come for your ass in a minute and do so with a vengeance.

I don’t quite know what it is that makes people, in particular, famous men, believe that they can say what they want or voice their jacked up opinions about issues and not have any repercussions. But that is what Atlanta rapper T.I. did, and after having his ass handed to him by women everywhere, he has backtracked on his comments. But is it too late?

If you don’t know what he said, here are some of the statements he made about a woman’s ability to run the United States.

“Not to be sexist, I can’t vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman… Just because every other position that exists, I think a woman could do well. But the president, it’s kind of like, I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally — they make very permanent, cemented decisions — and then later, it’s kind of like it didn’t happen, or they didn’t mean for it to happen.”

As if that wasn’t enough and because I guess he felt we didn’t get what he was saying he added,

“And I sure would hate to set off a nuke…You ain’t gonna be able to negotiate the right kind of foreign policy. The world ain’t ready yet.”

As you can imagine, the backlash was monumental. Women were not having it as well as men who felt his logic was anything but that. So what does T.I do? Apologize… via his Facebook page.

“I never intended to be taken as though I felt women couldn’t be leaders…I know that my daughters, as well as your daughters, can lead this nation as well as any other nation as long as they apply themselves and educate themselves and motivate themselves to do so.”

He goes on to say that he was only joking, and his comments are “not a reflection of how I feel. “

Oh T.I. Not only is his apology in direct opposition to what he expressed during his interview on DJ Whoo Kid‘s SiriusXM, it is bogus. The fact that he took back his statements and not simply clarify them, to me, is a clear indication that his apology is bullshit. He meant every sexist word he said. You don’t go into that much detail or say that much shit without having some truth behind it. Why even mention it at all if he was not serious? No respecting man is going to TOTALLY backtrack on what he said unless higher powers tell him to do so “or else.”

The real issue I have with what T.I said is that it is representative of the patriarchy system in place in our society. First of all, men can “joke” about that kind of stuff (which I again, I don’t believe he was joking), and it be okay. They make light of a woman’s natural tendencies to be emotional, vulnerable and sensitive, say the most sexist, offensive, discouraging things and then turn around and say, “ha, gotcha.” No, way, I can’t accept that.

The other ugly truth about the man control/lead system is that a healthy majority of men believe as T.I claims he doesn’t. A great deal of Men believe that since women have come such a long way thanks to the feminist movement and an overall shift in thinking over the last five decades, we should be content with the parts of society in which they allow us to have involvement. I mean ladies, we can vote, work, run for local office, head up companies, create products, make more many than ever before and still have some semblance of family. What more can we ask? How dare we want equal pay, equal treatment, professional courtesy and gasp a stab at the highest office in the land. How dare we think we have a right to these things.

I don’t care if T.I was playing. I believe that in every comment of jest there’s a good bit of truth. He could have come up with something better than playing the “I was joking” card. Because the way people feel about him right now, they are not kidding.

Johnny Manziel Alcohol Drama Back Again

0

johnny football alcohol drama with girlfriend nfl manziel 2015Johnny Football Drama with Girlfriend

Was it just a matter of time before Johnny Manziel had another bad moment that made the creators of TMZ happier than a casino elevator video? Probably.

Those who love celebrity gossip got their wish yesterday when a police report was released detailing a domestic dispute between Manziel and his girlfriend, Colleen Elizabeth Crowley.

The couple was in a car together when they were pulled over after a motorist called 911 when Manziel passed them on the shoulder of the road at a high rate of speed. Crowley told officers the couple had been arguing and that he pushed her head against the window.

She also tossed his wallet out the window. Manziel told police the two had been drinking earlier in the day. However, the officers stated that neither of the two was intoxicated to the point that they should have been arrested.

After all the drama hit the internet, the girlfriend went to Instagram to clear things up….aka, do damage control.

“J & I are good. I appreciate the people who stopped to check on us and call the police, I could see how it may have looked.”

“Anytime anyone sees a guy and a girl arguing on the side of the road they should definitely stop, you never know what that could be. Fortunately, it was just an argument, it was private, and we are all good!”

Well, it’s not private anymore!

Also, it wasn’t just an argument. Physical violence was involved according to the report, and it’s confusing to me that the couple was allowed just to drive off together. Just because Crowley said she didn’t want to press charges makes everything OK?

Here’s exactly what the report stated: “Based upon the statements of Mr. Manziel and Ms. Crowley, their relationship status, the lack of physical evidence, with the exception to Ms. Crowley’s left wrist, Ms. Crowley’s level of intoxication, the inconsistencies of Ms. Crowley’s statements ranging from whether Mr. Manziel was physically abusive towards her or not, and neither party wishing to pursue charges, no arrest was made.”

As we get closer to Sunday kickoff, this story will get bigger. Manziel will not be able to sweep this under the rug. ESPN and the NFL Network have about four hours of programming to fill on Sunday morning during the pregame talk. Manziel and domestic violence will fit nicely in those lineups.

I guess the Cleveland Browns think they can just keep this entire matter private as well, stating, “We were aware of the situation. It is a matter that we take seriously and have expressed our concerns to Johnny directly. Those conversations will remain private, and we will refrain from further comment at this time.”

Those conversations will not remain private for long. An NFL franchise will not be allowed just to ignore what happened in that car between a pro athlete and a female college student. People will want accountability from Manziel and his team.

Roger Goodell cannot afford another Ray Rice situation. He will have to act swiftly to avoid any perception that the NFL allows its players to use violence on women. And no matter how Manziel and Crowley try to spin this matter, pushing someone’s head against a window is using violence on them.

If Goodell pursues this matter as vehemently as DeflateGate, then Manziel may be hunted down like an escaped killer and shot on site.

Johnny Football’s stay in a rehab facility back in April made it all too obvious the guy was dealing with demons beyond middle linebackers and edge rushers. It’s not a shock that drinking has popped back up in his life. People with substance abuse problems don’t usually get clean and stay clean without the occasional slip-up.

If he were just caught drinking that would be news of course, but it turned into much more than that when a fight with his girlfriend became public. The decision to drink is likely to blame for the bad decisions afterward.

Those decisions could put Manziel’s career in jeopardy, even though he and his girlfriend would like for all this to just go away.

That’s a real shame because the guy looked like he had turned the corner and was acting more professional this year.

But we are just five weeks into the season, so I guess he didn’t deserve the Walter Payton Award just yet.

I’m sure there are Manziel fans and just casual fans out there who think this story will get too much run. I can hear it now, “He just had a spat with his girl. The media is making a mountain out of a molehill.”

While it’s true that this story will likely grow to the point of annoyance, just imagine if there were a video of Manziel pushing the beautiful young lady’s head up against the glass of his car. Think that would make it resonate a bit more with the public?

Manziel went to Twitter to say the incident was “embarrassing but not serious.”

He’s right about the first part. And he is going to see in the next 48 hours just how wrong he is about the second part once he becomes the focus of halftime reports during college football and is featured on all the pregame shows on Sunday.

Johnny Football is going to feel like he had his head slammed into a window come Monday morning.

Demi Lovato’s Spin Slam & Little Mix Walk Out On Justin Bieber

demi lovato spin slam 2015 gossipDemi Lovato has been keeping busy these days, as she promotes her new album Confident, starts a new record label with former Disney pal Nick Jonas and appears in a nude spread in Vanity Fair. However, even with this all going on the young pop star has found the time to add, “signed model” to her resume.

The 23-year-oldCool for the Summer” singer just signed her first “major modeling” contract with Wilhelmina, which is one of the top modeling agencies that has signed such stars as Robyn Lawley, Ellar Coltrane and Nick Jonas.

Earlier today, Demi released a statement saying:

“I’m thrilled to sign my first major modeling contract with Wilhelmina. I’m very excited to see where our work together will go creatively as I enter the next phase of my career and continue to develop as an artist.”

Alex Vaickus, CEO of Wilhelmina Models, also released a statement about Demi joining the label. Stating, “We are so thrilled to represent such a sophisticated, confident and talented woman, as Demi. She has proved that she is an accomplished singer and actress, and we look forward to seeing her success within the modeling realm.”

Demi made waves last week when she was featured in Vanity Fair, in a completely un-retouched and nude photo spread. Along with the photos, Demi talked candidly about her past struggles with body image and an eating disorder. Demi explained, “the reason I decided to do [the Vanity Fair] photo shoot was because when I think of confident I think of many things, but one thing, in particular, is feeling comfortable in your own skin. I thought there was something incredible about the idea of no makeup whatsoever, no clothes and no retouching.”

You can now listen to Demi’s fifth studio album, Confident, which is available on iTunes.

Spin magazine has called Iggy Azalea’s time on the album “The worst rap verse of 2015” along with slamming the album as a copycat of Katy Perry’s 2015 ‘Dark Horse’ along with Azalea’s ‘Black Widow.’

little mix storms out on justin bieber 2015 gossipRadio hosts of Australia’s Kyle & Jackie O Show learned the hard way that certain subjects are off limits with the girls of Little Mix.  The girls – Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall, Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock – did not react well when the interviewees asked them about One Direction’s upcoming album release date being the same as Justin Bieber.

Surprisingly it wasn’t the One Direction aspect of the question that struck a nerve with the band; it was because of Justin Bieber! You may recall that former One Direction member Zayn Malik abruptly ended his engagement with Perrie earlier this year. However, it wasn’t One Direction that got the girls of Little Mix fired up; it was the fact that they are constantly asked about Justin Bieber.

When asked about the Biebs, Jade responded, “To be honest, I’m sick of talking about it…. just about the whole Justin Bieber thing.” Perrie interjected saying, “it’s a bit of a touchy subject.”

Radio hosts, Kyle and Jackie tried to understand why the girls were so frustrated, in which Jesy explained, “We’re here to promote our single. We don’t really want to talk about Justin Bieber…”

Jade continued to express her frustrations saying, “We want to talk about our music, and then we get asked about him all the time. What’s the point? What’s the point? What’s the point?”

Shortly after Jade and Jesy stormed out of the interview, reportedly in tears.

NHL Calder Trophy Hopefuls 2015

0

NHL Calder Trophy Hopefuls 2015 imagesThe 2015/16 NHL season promises to be special for those keeping an eye on emerging talent. Two rookies that require no introduction at this point are both Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres. However both of those players are with teams that are doing poorly out the gates – Edmonton and Buffalo combine for just one win in eight games.

While the Calder Memorial Trophy, the season ‘s end award for the best rookie, often goes to a newbie who is on a poor team McDavid and Eichel combine for just three goals so far in the young season. Accordingly, perhaps this season the trophy will go to a rookie who is on a more talented team. Artemi Panarin of Chicago, Dylan Larkin of Detroit, Max Domi of Arizona, and Oscar Lindberg of the New York Rangers all fit that bill.

The Chicago Blackhawks, despite going 2-3-0 in their first five games, remain one of the favorites to win the 2016 Stanley Cup (Source: bet365). Panarin, a 23-year old who played in Russia last season, has been a key player on the Blackhawks so far this season. Playing in all five games, Panarin has scored twice and assisted three times while posting a +2 for plus/minus. If Chicago can improve on their slow start and if the rookie keeps scoring then the Russian promises to be in the headlines a lot – something that can only help his Calder Memorial Trophy hopes.

The Detroit Red Wings are not really considered a contender to win the Stanley Cup this season. In fact, at 33 to 1 with William Hill, Detroit are a middle-of-the-pack team at best when one goes by betting odds. However, they are 3-0 thus far with a +7 goal differential against their competition. Larkin, a 19-year old rookie out of the Big Ten, has been a part of their success. In three games, he has a goal and three assists while posting a very impressive +6 on plus/minus.

The Arizona Coyotes have to be considered one of the surprises in the NHL after about a week of action. With a 3-1 record Arizona has a lopsided victory over the Anaheim Ducks, the Pacific Division favorite at this point. Furthermore, Arizona’s only loss came under trying circumstances as they played on back-to-back nights, losing to the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in the second game. Domi, a 20-year old out of Winnipeg (Tie’s son), has been a major part of Arizona’s surprise start. With three goals and three assists so far he is among the league leaders for points.

Lastly, the Rangers currently sit on top of the Metropolitan Division with a 3-2 record and they remain one of the heavy favorites in the NHL. Lindberg has a been a surprise on that team as the 23-year old Swede tallied four goals in the first three games of his NHL career. Even though his team has posted a couple of losses, Lindberg still has a plus/minus of +5, a stat that proves that when he’s on the ice things generally go his team’s way.

Hot starts are one thing, but there’s also regression toward the mean. The Calder Memorial Trophy is not about how you start or how you finish. Rather it is a ‘big picture’ award that is meant to capture the results of a rookie’s entire season.

Over the long term, I think McDavid will show the best learning curve and come through with a big time second half of the season for Edmonton. He is my pick to win the Calder Trophy with Max Domi my second favorite now.

Master P On Lamar Odom & Ann Coulter Shuts Down Raven Symoné

Master P just keeps opening his mouth and having more nonsense come out as he attacks Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom. Raven Symone has met her match in Ann Coulter and ESPN’s Erin Andrews sues Marriott.

master p on lamar odom 2015 gossipMaster P Blames Kobe for Lamar Odom Condition

NBA player Lamar Odom has been fighting for his life since being found unconscious in a Las Vegas brothel on Tuesday. We have all been trying to make sense out of what happened and in some folks’ attempt to do so, placing blame on others is how they find their answers. While the Kardashians have gotten their fair share of the blame, rapper Master P called out one of the people he believes is to blame-Kobe Bryant. This is what he had to say when asked by TMZ Sports for his thoughts:

“So many phony and fake people out here now… I’m talking about Kobe [Bryant], all his men with whom he plays basketball. If Kobe was [Odom’s] friend…Kobe, like, owns the team. He could’ve got the man back on the team…that’s all he wanted.”

Bryant and Odom have been teammates and Bryant even left in the middle of a game to be by his side, but that doesn’t mean anything to the New Orleans born rapper. According to him, Kobe is a phony friend because he didn’t help Lamar when he need him the most.

But the interesting thing about Master P’s latest comments in which he said, “I tried to mentor him and give him advice, but he is a grown man and made his own decisions ….So that’s why I stopped dealing with Lamar,” is that he didn’t consider that maybe Kobe did the same thing. Bryant’s the one who showed up at the hospital and not him.

Kobe has seemed to respond to Master P’s criticism by tweeting,

“When WE feel the need to question the support of others in moments as critical as a life hanging in the balance, then we must question the kind of culture we have created that has led the US to such insensitive suspicion. “

Very true Black Mamba. Very true.

ann coulter shuts down raven symone 2015 gossipAnn Coulter Rips Raven Symoné for Hypocritical question on The View

See this is what happens when we don’t think before we speak. The shit we say comes right back around to bite us in the ass when we least expect it, and we are left speechless. And by we here I am talking about Raven Symoné.

A week after making her controversial comments about ghetto sounding names in which she said she would never hire a person with a name like “Watermonaldrea,” Ann Coulter embarrassed her today while on The View after Raven asked her a question. For whatever reason, she was tasked with asking Ann:

“My mom taught me when I was younger, if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. Why do you think it’s important to mudsling and have these word that obviously touch the hearts and souls of so many people of America being said when we are taught something different as a child, can you explain that to me and why do you think your success is based on that.

Raven kind of set herself up for the answer she received and if you know anything about Ann Coulter, she is the epitome of privilege in this country and does not apologize for it. Her conservative views are more than over the top so you can really only expect this kind of bitchy answer from someone like her.

“Well I’m at least talking about policy, you have a position on what people’s names should be. Watermelondrea. I mean you’ll insult people for their names, I’m talking about a government policy that affects all Americans and immigrants and the people living here and is harming our country, So you don’t follow it.

Raven is left wide-eyed speechless. She starts to say something and then leaves it alone

An embarrassing moment indeed.

Erin Andrews Sues Marriott for Peephole Video

NFL sideline reporter Erin Andrews has filed a $75 million lawsuit against Marriott International. According to court documents obtained by The Smoking Gun, Erin is suing because she was secretly videotaped in the buff in a Tennessee hotel room in 2008.

The video was filmed via a peephole in a room in which she was staying. The suit was first filed in 2011 in Nashville Circuit Court and claims the defendants were negligent and invaded her privacy after a stalker named Michael David Barrett was able to film her through a peephole in a room right next to hers. Barrett posted the clips online which caught the eye of the FBI after the footage when viral. He too is being sued.

Erin feels that Marriott employees were in the wrong for giving Barrett the information he needed in order to know which room she was in and the acted without consideration in giving him the adjacent room.

Everton vs Manchester United Soccer Preview 2015

0

everton vs manchester united soccer preveiw 2015 imagesManchester United will be away at Goodison Park this weekend where they take on Everton. The Toffees haven’t been the easiest of opponents for the Red Devils and especially hit top gear when they take on Manchester United at home.

The Merseyside outfit are unbeaten against Manchester United for the last three seasons at home, and not just that, they haven’t conceded even once in the last three encounters against the Red Devils.

In the 2012/13 season, Everton registered a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from Marouane Fellaini – who is now plying his trade at Old Trafford. The following season, Leighton Baines and Kevin Mirallas struck one each to help the Toffees to a 2-0 win. Last term, the winning margin was even bigger as Jamie McCarthy, John Stones and Mirallas were on the scoresheet to inflict a 3-0 defeat.

And Louis van Gaal, too, has acknowledged the difficulty of the task at his team’s hand when he conceded at the pre-match press conference: “Everton has always been difficult for United in history.”

Manchester United will head into the game on the back of their stunning 3-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners were in superlative form as they ran riot over the Red Devils and went into a 3-0 lead by only the 20th minute of the clash. Then they put a good defensive show to keep the visitors at an arm’s length to comprehensively pocket the three points.

Van Gaal will have the task of motivating his charges after such a sound defeat, and he will have most of his players available for the fixture. Ashley Young will be the only player missing from the encounter. Meanwhile Wayne Rooney, who missed out on both of the England national team fixtures during the recent European Championship qualifiers, will be available, as the Dutchman has acknowledged. He will also be able to call upon the services of Phil Jones, who has endured an injury-marred campaign and has featured only sporadically for the Red Devils so far this campaign.

Everton has been beaten only once this season when they were defeated 2-0 at home by Premier League title contenders and current table toppers Manchester City in their third game of the league campaign. With a tally of 13 points from their eight games, they are just three points shy of Manchester United’s tally.

Roberto Martinez appears to have ironed most of the flaws that marred their last season as he targets a top four spot this term and guide the Toffees to a place in the Champions League next year.

They have been unbeaten in their last five encounters, in which they have won twice and drawn the other three games, and will be eager to continue their unbeaten run.

The Toffees have already scalped reigning Premier League champions Chelsea when they soundly beat Jose Mourinho’s men 3-1 in September.

Manchester United will be eager to overturn their poor record at Goodison Park this weekend.

Atlanta Falcons Week 6 Indepth Recap vs New Orleans Saints

0

atlanta falcons week 6 nfl recap 2015 imagesAtlanta Falcons Indepth Recap

Falcons 21  Saints 31

What can I say about this game, the first loss of my Falcons’ season?

I told ya so. Well, I didn’t say it aloud, but mostly to myself. I had a sinking feeling that the lowly Saints would steal one from Atlanta. The Falcons were riding high, but coming off a tough overtime game versus Washington, and they were the road team on Thursday Night Football.

If I were forced to bet, I would have taken the Saints regardless of the records.

Unfortunately, I was right. New Orleans jumped on the Birds early and never really let them back in the game. The blocked punt by Michael Mauti that was so reminiscent of Steve Gleason’s play back in 2006 let me know this game belonged to New Orleans.

Sure Devonta Freeman had his usual fantasy freakish game with 100 yards on just 13 carries. But that was not enough as Drew Brees carved up the ATL defense by hitting Benjamin Watson 10 times for 127 yards including a touchdown.

Ben Watson left UGA with Hershel right?

New Orleans got out to a 14-0 lead then watched Atlanta hang around within a touchdown before the Saints took a ten-point lead in the third quarter.

At 24-7 the Falcons were all but finished. The Birds had been down big time to Dallas earlier this year, so they made an effort to climb back in. They just didn’t execute well enough to get it done in week six.

Coach Quinn never threw in the towel, though I would argue he would have done so if he had a few more seasons under his belt. I get the point of fighting until the end as he tries to mold this team into his image. But the risk of injury to Matt Ryan, Julio, and Freeman is not worth making a point.

Freeman scored twice in the fourth to make fantasy owners happy again this week. His final score came with 2:28 to play and was followed by a failed onside kick.

Atlanta Falcons vs New Orleans Saints Highlights

Devonta ‘Fantasy’ Freeman

3 things:

  • The Falcons just lost the most important game of the year so far. 5-0 looked great, but 0-1 in a division is not helpful clearly. If Carolina keeps playing at a high level, this first division loss could prove very costly.
  • Devonta Freeman is the real deal. He’s not just a fantasy gem; he is the workhorse of the Falcons offense. It’s clear from the couple nice carries Tevin Coleman had that the O-line makes it easy on whoever is carrying the ball.
  • Thursday Night Football is great for fans. Not so great for players and coaches. The road team on a short week has a big hill to overcome. Whether it’s more mental than physical, I don’t know, but Thursdays can ruin an undefeated record.

Julio Watch: Julio looked better than last week even on short rest. It might have been a good idea to sit him once the game was basically over. One thing to prove a point about not quitting if you’re Dan Quinn, quite another to risk your best player with zero chance to come back.

CRIMSON PEAK Featurette Sneaks In

0

crimson peak featurette sneaks in 2015 imagesThe movie Crimson Peak just arrived in theaters in time for Halloween. The movie is about a young woman named Edith who marries the seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe. Shortly after they wed, Thomas takes her to live with him in his remote Gothic mansion set in the English hills. Living with them is Thomas’ sister, Lady Lucille, who is protective over the mansion and the family secrets that lie within it. Since Edith is able to communicate with the deceased, she tries to decipher the mystery behind the mysterious visions that have begun haunting her since she moved into her new home.

The movie was written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, who is known for writing such screenplays as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Pan’s Labyrinth. Mia Wasikowska of Alice in Wonderland stars as Edith, alongside co-stars Tom Hiddleston (Avengers) and Jessica Chastain (Interstellar/Zero Dark Thirty).

Director Del Toro brings a blend of psychological horror and gothic beauty to this film that plays with the realm of dark fairy-tales. He chooses to set the story in the year 1901, where he could emphasize contemporary gothic visuals throughout the film.

Crimson Peaks is set in Allerdale Hall, which is a well-known gothic mansion that sits atop the English hillside. The hall is located in the middle of a bleak, barren landscape and is perched above a red clay deposit – hence the name “Crimson Peak.” The Hall was originally a complex set that Del Toro had constructed in his mind. However, while writing the script the house quickly became one of the most compelling characters of the story and therefore, Del Toro had a crew work endlessly for six months to create a replica of what he had been envisioning when writing Crimson Peak.

Unique to most sets, Allerdale Hall was built like an actual house, complete with ceilings and hallways that connected all the rooms. Basically, the equivalent of 10 sets were all made into one. Del Toro wanted to ensure he was able to seamlessly film the scenes authentically and not to use any digital stitching of shots in post-production.

In order to showcase the film’s visuals, Legendary and Universal pictures are also releasing Crimson Peaks in IMAX. Therefore, IMAX has released a short featurette that explains the film’s “Throwback to Gothic Horror.”

The featurette begins with lead actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays Sir Thomas Sharpe, explaining that director and writer Guillermo Del Toro wanted to make a “classical gothic romance.” Going on to say he wanted to, “reclaim the horror genre to infuse it with a classical tone to make it romantic again.”

Next, Guillermo is shown explaining the inspiration behind the film. He states, “There is a beautiful genre called Gothic Romance that combines an almost fairy tale, dark atmosphere, ghostly, supernatural but very classy with a heightened melodrama.” He goes on to explain that this particular genre used to be much more common in Hollywood, as big budgets and production efforts were put towards creating such films. However, after the 1950s and 60s, he felt that Gothic Romance “got lost,” and therefore Crimson Peaks was his way of bringing it back.

The featurette also shows Academy Award nominated actress Jessica Chastain discussing how the house itself became a character in the film. She feels that the movie is almost a “throwback to another era,” as the set was built so intricately and with so much detail. Actress Mia Wasikowska notes that the built-to-scale mansion helped the actors embrace the world that is showcased within the movie. It truly gave them a sense of the story that Del Toro was trying to tell through his script and visuals. She also claims that it was the “most amazing, beautiful set [she] has ever seen,” which is an impressive feat considering she was on set of the imaginative Alice and Wonderland.

By seeing the film in IMAX, Jessica explains that you are not simply watching the film…you are “experiencing it.”

With the incredibly high attention to details, both the movie’s set and story brings audiences into another era. With a mansion that is as much luxurious as it is dark and spooky, Crimson Peaks puts a new high-quality spin on the typical Halloween thriller.

You can immerse yourself into the world of Allerdale Hall now that Crimson Peaks is in theaters everywhere.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool Soccer Preview 2015

tottenham hotspur vs liverpool preview soccer 2015 imagesThis weekend’s fixture at White Hart Lane will see more eyeballs than some of the recent clashes at the London venue as Jurgen Klopp makes his Premier League debut with Liverpool on Saturday.

The Reds sacked Brendan Rodgers earlier this month after the Northern Irishman endured a difficult start to the campaign as they sit tenth in the league standings at the conclusion of the first eight rounds of games. The Merseyside giants had been hugely unimpressive in some of their recent games, which led to the Anfield faithful booing their own team during their League Cup game against League Two side Carlisle United.

However Klopp, who earned his reputation at Borussia Dortmund – where he stayed for seven seasons and guided them to back to back Bundesliga titles, a DFB Pokal and the final of the 2013 Champions League with attacking and fast transition football – will be expected to bring the same at Anfield. But it sounds easier than it actually is. At the Rhine outfit, Klopp had the players to fit the bill, or to put it another way, he had spent enough time at the club to shape the players into his mould.

Meanwhile, he is barely a week into his stint at Anfield and has hardly had any time with his players to teach them any nuances of his football philosophy. In the prevailing circumstances, he will be keen to use his first few games as testing water to see the kind of personnel he has at his disposal and if he needs to bring in any new players during the winter transfer market.

On the other hand, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are flying high as they have grabbed ten points from their last four fixtures. Their run included 1-0 wins over Sunderland – who are currently in the relegation zone – Crystal Palace and a hugely impressive 4-1 hammering of Premier League title contenders Manchester City at White Hart Lane.

The three wins, which all came in the month of September, helped Pochettino clinch Premier League Manager of the Month award and he will be eager to get his team back to their best as they head into the first game after the recent international break.

Encouragingly for the Lilywhites, their frontman Harry Kane has gotten off the mark with his goal against the Citizens and Spurs will be counting on his heroics this weekend.

Klopp has been dealt two injury setbacks in his early days at Anfield as young defender Joe Gomez and former Burnley striker Danny Ings have both been ruled out for months after they suffered anterior cruciate ligament tears recently.

To compound his problems, Christian Benteke and former Hoffenheim forward, Roberto Firmino will also be unavailable.

Klopp will be expected to play his trusted 4-2-3-1 – the formation he preferred at both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund – and will be counting on the heroics of Divock Origi and an injury prone Daniel Sturridge during his Premier League managerial debut.

Whatever the result, it sure promises to be an enticing affair.
