‘Supernatural’ Raising Hell raised much with SPN Fandom

Episode two of the fifteenth and final season of “Supernatural” was called ‘Raising Hell’. I’m not sure why it was called that since Hell was ostensibly already “raised” in the first episode, but it turned out to be sort of fitting anyway since the episode raised a fair amount of disagreement and infighting amongst the stressed-out-because-we’re-about-to-lose-this-show fandom.

As a fan, I sometimes agree with all sides. I understand those who don’t want to hear any complaints or criticisms; who desperately want their last 19 episodes of the show to be something that feels good; a celebration without critique that brings only joy and lots of good memories. I get that feeling; I tend to be good at forgiving, handwaving and even ignoring in order to appreciate the good parts of what I love. On the other hand, I also understand the fans who are critical of an episode. When you only have 19…18….episodes left, having one of those feel unsatisfying is tough to swallow. I’m somewhere in between the extremes.

Supernatural Writers

The writers of this episode are not always my “Supernatural” favorites, as I’ve said before. They have written some good episodes, but there are quite a few that haven’t worked well for me. Whether it’s because they’re seasoned television writers or because they just enjoy juggling, these are the writers who often are given the episodes that include everything but the kitchen sink (which I’m sure, in all fairness, is challenging). Some people like that and are happy to greet each new revelation with a ‘more is better’ attitude. That’s not me. I like to savor each little bit of this show.

I like the show to spool itself out without too much rushing, and for every moment to be invested with depth and a meaning I have to work a bit to figure out. I’m not just here for the action; I expect the show to give me insight into the characters that are why I love it.  I start to get a headache when there’s too much going on that isn’t well connected to the main characters or when there are too many characters jammed into one episode.

Fan Favorites Return

We’ve been told that lots of ‘fan-favorite’ characters will be coming back this season, which makes sense. It’s the last season, our last chance to see some of our favorites and perhaps to give them a proper send-off. I’ve been on board with that revelation, and at the same time concerned that it would be overdone so that each return wouldn’t have the gravity it’s due. For me, that happened in this episode. Rowena and Chuck were back, which was expected, so I won’t consider those a “return” as much as they’re-part-of-the-current-storyline. But in addition to Rowena and Chuck (and new character Belphegor) in this episode, we had three other returns: Amara, Ketch, and Kevin. That’s a lot of returns in one episode!

I like all three of the returning characters, and the actors did a wonderful job with their portrayals. While I initially wasn’t a Ketch fan, I’ve warmed up to the character over the seasons, partly I suspect because David Haydn-Jones is an awesome human being and a talented enough actor that he brings a vulnerability to Ketch that’s unexpected and interesting. Most of fandom was spoiled for all three returns, which also dilutes the impact considerably, and while I don’t entirely know if it made sense for Ketch to turn up there in the nick of time, I could go with it.

Sam Dean Winchester rifle with Jack looking for Ketch 2019

Then we had the return of Amara, something fandom also knew about. I loved Emily Swallow showing us Amara’s evolution (and her snazzy new wardrobe) but by the time we saw her and Chuck, the episode was already feeling a bit crowded.

Welcome Back Kevin Tran

And then we got the most emotional return of all – Kevin Tran. Again, most of us knew he’d be back, which diminished the impact, unfortunately. I was happy he was coming back; It’s no secret that I love Osric Chau to bits and that I adored his character. But by the time Kevin appeared, I think I actually exclaimed, “Kevin too??”

There was so much going on in this episode that I didn’t feel like I had the space and time to appreciate Kevin’s return like I wanted to, and certainly not to grieve his departure the way it should have been grieved. Kevin’s story in this episode was tragic, turning him into even more of a tragic hero. Instead of God/Chuck sending Kevin to Heaven as he’d promised, apparently poor innocent Kevin got sent to Hell. What?? I hate that. I know we’re supposed to ‘hate’ Chuck, and this certainly helps push that along, but …. Kevin? I hope nobody tells Mrs. Tran, because I love her and Lauren Tom too and….damn. Kevin didn’t deserve that. Kevin is still a big damn hero, loyal to the Winchesters and standing up the other ghosts.

Supernatural Chuck bullying Kevin Tran 1502

Plenty Of Action

The episode was so crowded and so full of ‘action’ instead of meaningful conversation (for the most part) that I didn’t even need to reach for my tissues – until Kevin said his goodbyes. Sam and Dean wanted so badly to make it right, to send Kevin to Heaven where he belongs, and it’s heartbreaking that they can’t. The brothers standing there waving, looking so guilty and sad and helpless – and Kevin being brave and forgiving and ‘it is what it is’ as he takes his chances as a ghost – it was the first time in this episode that I felt choked up.

First Real Goodbye

It also felt like the first “real” goodbye of the last season. If Osric indeed won’t be back, that was it. We were saying goodbye to the beloved character of Kevin Tran along with the Winchesters. And it hurt. I just wish it hadn’t been crowded into an episode that was already so crowded.

Rewatch

On rewatch, that scene hurt even more. Not because of Kevin only, but because when Osric turned around and said “Love you guys” I couldn’t help but hear him saying that to Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. I thought about all the years they’ve worked together on the show and traveled the world together for conventions, all those special moments.

I thought about my own adventures with Osric, working with him as he wrote his chapter in “Family Don’t End With Blood;” reassuring him when he was so nervous before his first time singing at the Saturday Night Special; the two of us helping Misha Collins deliver pizza to the Hall H lines at Comic-Con one night. So many memories, and now this is goodbye. This show that brought them together is ending, and they’ll go their separate ways. I cried more as I rewatched than I did the first time, trying to come to terms with the goodbye.

I feel like there are going to be a lot of those times for me – and for many fans – this season.

Best Episode Scenes

The other meaningful scenes were between Castiel and Dean and between Amara and Chuck. (There was little that was meaningful between Sam and Dean, though I’ll take the tidbits of worried big brother Dean that I can get). Cas and Dean have a bit of a showdown, Cas confronting Dean about his obvious anger and Dean admitting it. The problem with that scene was that it was almost a repeat of the conversation that Sam and Dean had the week before. At the end of that conversation, Dean’s perspective seemed to shift a bit after listening to Sam’s more hopeful reframe. In this episode, somehow he’s right back to where he was before, as though that conversation with Sam never happened. Huh?

It’s not that people can’t shift back and forth in their ability to stay hopeful about something in the face of repeated disappointment and failure – obviously, there can be a lot of back and forth and ups and downs. But from a narrative perspective, it was a critical moment when Dean shifted into the familiar Winchester stance of “always keep fighting” alongside his brother; that’s what allowed the iconic moment when they closed the trunk and Dean said, in a voice steely with determination, “we got work to do”.  Having Dean walk back that determination and fall back into hopelessness and cynicism in his conversation with Castiel the very next episode dilutes what is so far my favorite scene of the season (the we got work to do), and that bothers me.

The scene itself is one of the best of the episode though. It’s so much more compelling to me to see the main characters’ emotions and have them interact in a way that’s meaningful and gives some insight into how they’re feeling.  I like that Cas is as unshakeable as Sam in his conviction that they have had some free will, and that what they’ve done has mattered.

Dean scoffs, cynically insisting that nothing about their lives is real.

Dean Winchester angry scoff at Cas SPN 1502

But Cas disagrees.

Cas: You asked what about all this is real? We are.

Dean Winchester asking Cas what is real SPN

Whether that line was intentionally ambiguous or unintentionally, it can be read multiple ways, from the most generic sense of ‘we’ as humanity, to Team Free Will (which is how I read it), to the most put-it-on-a-tee-shirt shipper interpretation possible. Take it as you will, and I certainly understand why shippers want to take it in the narrow sense, but it has a lot of impact if you read it as Cas talking about all three of them and what they’ve accomplished. Dean is having a serious existential crisis, much more destabilized by the revelation of Chuck pulling the strings than either Cas or Sam are.

He’s hanging on by his fingernails, struggling to find that hope and determination that has always kept him going through even the worst of tragedies and losses. If he can’t find it, I don’t think he’ll be able to do that – and I think Cas knows just how close to the edge Dean is right now. His impassioned speech is an attempt to pull Dean out of his existential crisis and set him back on his feet, so Dean can keep fighting. Sam was trying to do the same thing in the last episode – they know Dean, better than anyone. Neither of them want to see him give up, because in a very real sense, that will kill him.

Saved By Fandom

By the way, sometimes after I watch an episode that didn’t leave me jumping up and down, or that left me scratching my head way too much, I’m so effing grateful for fandom. I was having a hard time pulling any deep meaning or emotional resonance out of this episode, and so disappointed about that. Then I ran across a fan vid that traced the evolution of Dean Winchester’s struggle to hang onto his faith and hope and determination, and how many times he’s been so close to giving up, so tired of the fight.

From Dean’s moment of wanting to give up way back in Croatoan right up through the current season, it’s been such a long and difficult fight. I found myself tearing up more from that vid than from the episode itself, suddenly confronted with just how big a deal this is for Dean, and how long and hard his road has been. That made the scene with Castiel so much more emotional and so much more important, and ultimately made the episode more satisfying. Do I wish I could not work quite so hard to get there? Sure. I wish the show itself transported me there like it so often has. But when it doesn’t, I’m grateful for this fandom.

Chuck and Amara

As far as plot, the only thing that moved us forward significantly was the Chuck and Amara interaction (and the Chuck and Sam connection).

Chuck seeks out his sister, who is enjoying Reno and her massages and her suddenly fabulous wardrobe (who wouldn’t after being stuck in that same black dress for half an eternity?). He tries to make her think he wants to be close again out of sibling love. Amara, however, sees right through her “big brother”, sensing his weakness and figuring out that he’s trapped here without her agreeing to leave with him.

She taunts him, all that flowers and rainbows forgiveness from the end of Season 11 nowhere to be seen. If she and Chuck were ever as mutually forgiving as they claimed to be then, it’s long since disappeared. Amara hasn’t forgiven Chuck for locking her away all those years, taking pleasure in the revenge of now being the one who’s keeping him trapped.

Meta Time

Showrunner Andrew Dabb has said in interviews recently that they’re moving away from the meta version of Chuck as the writer (of the actual show) and just making him a character – but his comment about loving the “Game of Thrones” ending is about as meta as you can get. And just as ominous.

If we’re supposed to hate Chuck, I can’t help but feel a little bad for him here, as Amara rejects him and abandons him. He seems vulnerable with the God gun wound, wincing as he touches it.

Chuck feels Sam Winchester pain in his shoulder SPN 1502

As most of us have suspected, Sam winces at the same time, clutching at his shoulder. We’ve been speculating for some time that Sam and Chuck are somehow joined by their shared wound, and this seems to confirm it.

Sam Winchester shoulder hurting for Dean Raising Hell

Dean: (in worried big brother mode): Still the shoulder, huh?

Sam dismisses it, insisting he’s fine, but Dean stares after him as Sam walks away, clearly worried.

Dean Winchester with Jack worried about Sam wound 1502

That was about as much real (not incidental) interaction as we got between Sam and Dean and now we have eighteen episodes to go. Come on, Show, gimme!

Chuck Sam Connection

I am intrigued by the Chuck and Sam connection, and where it will take us. I hope it’s somewhere compelling and meaningful and not incidental. Please, Show?

Let’s see, what else was in this episode? The odd thing is, the episode felt extremely crowded and yet….small… simultaneously. Lots of people, some of them either random highly annoying townspeople and some of them random highly annoying ghosts who sometimes looked like they’d just come from Halloween Adventure (thanks to the broad daylight). And then a bunch of returning characters who I wish I’d had more time to appreciate.

Rowena

I love Rowena, and I love Ruth Connell’s portrayal of Rowena. I enjoyed her heroic moments of holding out the soul trap and shouting out the incantation that eventually zapped the bad guy.  For some reason, in the midst of all of them in grave danger, there was also the sub-sub-plot of Rowena and Ketch developing a rather intense mutual lust for each other, just like that. Some fans were like yay new ship (Retch, apparently? Unfortunately) and others were like what the hell, why would Rowena go after Ketch? These writers seem to like to write Rowena into awkward romantic interludes with questionable partners, and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Supernatural Rowena and Ketch getting lusty 2019

Dean Sam Winchester finding Rowena 1502

I love the character, and she’s been lusty and unapologetic from the start, which is fine by me, but that’s not all there is to her. I loved seeing both the darker and the softer sides of Rowena in the past, especially her complicated relationship with Fergus. I don’t want her reduced to comic fodder only (with that obnoxious oh-hey-something-funny-is-happening music in the background no less).

Rowena smiling flirty Supernatural Raising Hell
Rowena with Ketch SPN 1502

It looks like we’ll get something more complex for Rowena (for better or worse) next week, but her banter with Ketch didn’t entirely work for me here. Ruth Connell and David Haydn-Jones did a bang up job of playing up the innuendo, it was just sandwiched into an episode that already had too much going on. Oh! I did enjoy the little meta moment when Rowena said Ruth’s real life favorite line “What do ye’ want?” that anyone who’s been to a convention instantly recognizes. Nicely done, Ruth.

Goodbye Ketch…or not?

I don’t know if that was Ketch’s final goodbye or not. If it was, we got a small more genuine moment between him and Dean as he was being loaded into the ambulance. Like Rowena with Fergus, I found the relationship between Dean and Ketch to be complex and thus fascinating. If that was goodbye, I’m glad we at least got that moment, but if that was the last of Ketch, he didn’t get much of a wrap up to the more complex (and interesting) parts of his storyline.

Problems

One of the underlying problems with this episode (and the premiere at times) is that there was nothing particularly scary or suspenseful about it, which is surprising since they were fighting all these ghosts the whole time. This episode was a continuation of the premiere episode, so much of it still took place in an annoyingly brightly sit suburban housing development. The well-lit ghosts just didn’t look scary, so all the tension that should have been there in those scenes was lacking. Definitely not a roller coaster this week. I miss the dark palate of early seasons “Supernatural” so much sometimes that I could cry.

Head Scratchers

There were some scratch-our-head moments, which also give me a headache. Why wasn’t Kevin’s soul drawn into the soul bomb? Why can’t he ever go to Heaven, if John found a way there? (Because God tossed him down there – that’s new). How did Ketch get possessed when he was wearing his stylish iron chain necklace? Why did the Winchesters make the iron necklaces so loose they could easily come off? Wouldn’t a stylish iron collar have been a better choice…hmmm…picture that…

Devouring Ghosts?

Anyway. Why can a ghost devour another ghost? And why do they sometimes zap from place to place and sometimes run? (Slowly). Why was Rowena making the soul bomb at another house that was within the warded zone so that she then had to carry the soul bomb through the streets? And why could possessed Ketch stroll through the warding to grab the soul bomb from Rowena at the end?? Who took his iron chain necklace off?? So much confusion. Enlighten me, please, if you have some answers.

How’d They Miss That?

It was also head scratchy that everyone was so strikingly unobservant – including the Winchesters and Cas. The woman who snuck out into the quarantine area to kick off the episode had an entire long conversation with her former neighbor (now possessed by Jack the Ripper) without ever wondering why he was mutely staring at her with murderous intent. Sam and Dean somehow don’t realize that the man and woman who sneak out later are possessed even though they’re standing on the other side of the warding staring blank faced and mute. Really? Don’t make Sam and Dean look like dumbasses, Show!

High Hopes

If we were in Season 3, I might be content to say well, this wasn’t the most compelling episode and it didn’t make me feel very much. Next episode will be better. I’m trying to say that now too, but the stakes are so much higher. Eighteen episodes to go, and I want all of them to matter. I want to care. I want to feel. I’m aware that I have the bar set relatively high, but I also know this show has been up to that challenge for years and years and years. Keep it up, Show, just a little bit longer. Your cast doesn’t want to fade out, and they deserve for that not to happen.

Let’s end with a few more positives.

I did enjoy Dean unceremoniously pulling out his gun and shooting Ketch when he was possessed by Jack the Ripper. Trust Dean Winchester to just do what needs to be done. And that combo pistol shot and then the one-handed catch of the soul catcher that Ketch tossed? Pretty badass.

Badass Sam

Sam had his badass moment in a different way by showing off his leadership skills trying to calm down the increasingly restless townspeople crammed into the high school. Jared Padalecki’s subtle portrayal of Sam’s exasperation was a lovely little moment of realism and humor.

I realized after the fact that the high school was the filming location for the show the night I arrived in Vancouver for the convention there in August. Unfortunately, my friends and I got distracted with eating pizza and by the time we got to the school, it was just in time to wave goodbye to the cast and crew as everyone drove away. I need to change my “Supernatural” priorities obviously.

Cas got his badass moment, in a way, by standing up to Dean and going out on a limb to try to convince him that free will isn’t entirely an illusion. Wrestling with that notion has been Castiel’s path as much as it has been Sam and Dean’s, and it’s clear that he’s also having to struggle not to succumb to hopelessness and what looks a lot like depression.

I’m rooting for all of them.

And for “Supernatural” too.

‘Supernatural’ Season 15 Premiere: End is near with 19 more to go

The experience of watching “Supernatural” for this season is going to be very different than the fourteen seasons before. It’s Season 15, the final season of the show I’ve been loving for fourteen years and reviewing for almost as long. I usually write an emotional, bouncing-with-anticipation review of the season premiere after waiting impatiently, my heart in my throat and overflowing with gratitude that I get another twenty-plus episodes with my favorite fictional characters. I’ve never watched a season premiere and thought oh god, we’re one episode closer to the end – until now.

I wanted desperately to just watch the episode and savor every second of it, every moment with the Winchesters and company something to cherish now that I know we won’t have that many more moments with them. I didn’t want to think about how it was the last time I’d sit down to watch a season premiere, or that now we have one hour less with “Supernatural” than we had the day before. I just wanted to squee, but I couldn’t shake the knowledge that we’ll need to say goodbye soon. One down, nineteen to go. Somebody stop me from counting down the number of times we get to see Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins!

I’m sure my reviews will be a little different this season too. I can’t be cavalier about anything – not about my intense love for the show and the characters, and not about my frustration when any of those 42 precious minutes of an episode are squandered. So, expect even more passion than usual (if that’s possible) and a little more rage than usual every now and then. I’ll try to temper it, honest.

‘Back And To The Future’ wasn’t the strongest season starter we’ve had, and there were things that made me grind my teeth or scratch my head, but there were also things I enjoyed. I selfishly – and perhaps unfairly – want every second of the last season to be exactly what I want to see, and I recognize that’s not going to happen. I’ll still likely rail against it anyway.

‘The Road So Far’ had Bob Seger’s ‘The Famous Final Scene’ playing, which is not only melancholy and dramatic (which I thought was fitting) but meta as hell, cueing us into the fact that this season is probably going to be very meta indeed.

Supernatural the road so far read of baby impala

And then we got the last title card. Sorry, I couldn’t help the L word.

Supernatural Season 15 title card

The song bled right into the graveyard scene where we left Sam, Dean, Cas and Jack at the end of Season 14, which was interesting. It’s a mellow song for an all out fight, but it sort of worked, and I liked the way the entire scene was filmed, our heroes battling the hordes in the darkness, a flash of angel blade or rusty fence spike, Cas scooping up Jack’s body, Dean jump kicking a ghost as he ran through the graveyard. They take shelter in a crypt of some sort and try to figure out what’s going on.

Dean is angry, and I have to remind myself that for the characters, Chuck was just there a second ago, just snapped his fingers and killed Jack and opened the doors of hell. Dean is pessimistic about their options – killed by the ghosts or starve to death in there.

Cas: Well, I wouldn’t starve…

Dean: Well good for you.

Dean and Cas aren’t getting along too well.

Castiel not happy with Dean Winchester Supernatural 15

Sam comes up with an idea and they try to dig through a wall to a sewer pipe and I immediately wonder why Cas isn’t helping with that. A zombie ghost crawls out the hole they’ve made, and Cas stomps its head, but it zaps out of the body (with some really well done VFX). Jack’s body stands up and says hello, which was a surprise – and I like surprises. Castiel does not like this particular surprise.

Cas: Get out of him!

Castiel tries to force Belphigor out of Jacks body SPN 1501

Cas wants to kill the demon defiling Jack’s corpse but Dean stops him when the demon insists he can be useful. Sam takes Dean’s side, and Cas reluctantly goes along.

The demon Belphigor was one of the best parts of the episode. Alex Calvert was perfection, getting to be snarky and sassy and in control and playing a totally different character than Jack. I didn’t realize quite how much I missed Crowley until we got Crowley Jr. Sure, he probably isn’t who he says he is, and sure, he’s probably going to betray them in the worst possible way, but I enjoyed every minute of Belphigor onscreen so for now, he can stay.

We cut to some teenage girls having a slumber party and some eye rolling happened in my house in response. The girls are someone’s idea of obnoxious teenage girl stereotype, focused solely on appearance and money and saying things like “divorce is awesome”. What?? Obviously they’re going to die but I just wanted the scene to be over so that was sort of okay. The original “Supernatural” Bloody Mary episode is the one that scared me the most. I watched it with my daughter and I can still remember the two of us curled up on the couch clutching each other and screaming as she crawled out of that damn picture frame. TERRIFYING. That episode was dark and was smart enough not to show too much and we cared about the family being terrorized. This group of girls we didn’t care about and it was broad daylight throughout and nobody even said “Bloody Mary” three times, so the scare factor just wasn’t there.

The next few parts were confusing for me. So souls were released from hell – apparently there are 2 or 3 BILLION – but they needed to take bodies so they made zombies from the graveyard where they happened to pop out? Is that right? Is that the only opening, so all 3 billion have to come out right there? If it’s single file, it’s gonna take a while. Or is it happening all over the world? Do the boys even know? Cas says that they’re ghosts technically, and I’m confused about that too. Ghosts that possessed dead bodies? I hate being confused about this show.

The boys take off in the Impala and soon happen upon a car abandoned and bloodied with no body. Somehow Sam and Dean figure out that it looks familiar (does it?) and that it was a Woman in White, maybe “theirs”. I’m not at all sure how they know this, since all they have is an abandoned car with a bloodied windshield. But we get a flashback so we know they’re right. Somehow.

Meanwhile, an evil clown ghost ala John Wayne Gacy stalks a mom and her daughter (not his usual MO) in their home. That was scary, because clowns….I agree with Sam Winchester. This one does act like a ghost; it can zap in and out of rooms. And it’s creepy as hell. Whoever that guest actor is, kudos.

However, this scene goes on so long that I’m wondering out loud where Sam, Dean and Cas are. Don’t waste 5 of the 42 minutes of my nineteenth to last episode on people I don’t freaking know!

Sam unfolds himself from the car and takes off down the street on those long long legs under his short FBI jacket.

Sam Winchester with Cas searching for Dean with clown

Dean wants to go with him and have Cas stay with Belphigor, but Cas says no.

Cas: Dean, I can’t. I can’t even look at him.

That’s a nice bit of canon remembered, because Castiel can of course see the demon possessing Jack’s body.

So Dean stays with Belphigor, which gives us a scene I really enjoyed – and some of “Supernatural’s” trademark humor in the midst of horror.

Belphigor looks out the car window, admiring the men and women walking by.

Belphigor: People are crazy good looking now…when I was alive, we worshipped a giant rock that looked like a huge penis…. People were ugly. They had humps. Like lots of humps.

Belphigor ogles two attractive young men.

Belphigor to Dean: Look at ‘em now. I mean, look at you.

Dean: Me?

Belphigor: You….you’re gorgeous.

Me: He’s not wrong.

Dean looks comically uncomfortable, partly because Belphigor is in Jack’s body.

Belphigor: Who was he?

Dean: He was our kid. Kinda.

Oh, that hurt. Despite all they went through, Dean still feels that way. It’s a terrible loss for all three of them.

They come up with the idea to confine the ghosts to the town, which Belphigor conveniently knows the spell to do. Cas is quite aware of this, to his credit. If it seems like too much of a coincidence, it probably is. Do we really think Belphigor was a lowly clock puncher?

As they work to clear the entire town (it must be a very small town indeed), Sam, of course, ends up in the house with the evil clown. He puts down his salt gun to help the little girl down from the shelf where they’re hiding (psshhh I don’t think Sam Winchester would do that) and then doesn’t pick it up again while he spends time reassuring her, so of course the clown zaps in behind him and ends up nearly killing him.

Cas bursts in just in time to save the day, but not before the evil clown gashes Sam across the chest.

Cas is able to heal him (and mend his shirt too – that’s a first I think!). When Cas also tries to heal Sam’s wound from the God gun, Sam has a red-tinged vision of what looks like Lucifer-possessed Sam snapping the neck of his pleading brother. WHAT?? I liked that part. I like that we don’t know what’s going on with the wound and that we don’t know if Sam is seeing the future or some Alternate Universe Sam and Dean or what. I like not knowing, so thanks for that, Show.

Sam brushes off Castiel’s concern and insists he’s okay, but Cas knows something is up – he sensed a kind of energy he’d never seen before. Hmmm.

Sam: A ghost.

Dean, meanwhile, calls Rowena and convinces her to come help (after calling her ass exquisite and saying please) and honestly, she’s not wrong about her ass at all. Belphigor confesses to Dean that he’s “a fan” – specifically of Dean’s time in hell as Alistair’s apprentice torturer. Dean is clearly uncomfortable being reminded, but he does get some interesting information. All the doors in hell are open – including the Cage. Michael was just sitting there when Belphigor left, but who knows.

Belphigor: I’m sure he wouldn’t hold a grudge…

Dean Winchester reacts to Belphigor being a fan of his SPN

Dean and Belphigor are attacked by the ghost of the Woman In White, which looks so bizarre to me standing in the middle of the street in broad daylight. I love “Supernatural” for its darkness, and its ghosts look a lot more scary when you can’t see them that clearly. In broad daylight, they look too theatrical, no matter how expert the makeup is.

The good guy sheriff gets killed and Belphigor uses the fresh heart for the confining spell – which he says unbelievably SLOWLY and makes me gnash my teeth.  Sam and Cas fight off the three or four ghosts that are after them (during which Sam accidentally shoots Cas and Cas stops in the middle of the fight to deadpan “You shot me” accusingly).

Again, the broad daylight doesn’t work for me, takes all the scare factor out of the scene. When Sam and Cas see the spell create a border, they make a run for it, the ghosts running after them. What? Why are the ghosts running instead of zapping in front of them or something?

I’m confused again, but I do enjoy Jared’s long long legs as he runs, so there’s that. Sam scoops up the little girl and carries her like she weighs nothing and he looks like a big damn hero so there’s that too.

I loved Sam getting to prevail over his nemesis the evil clown ghost.

Everyone squeezes into the back of the Impala so Sam and Dean can have their customary places in front and they take the traumatized mom and daughter to the school where the entire town is apparently holed up.

Sam walks them in for some reason, and Dean looks at Cas.

Dean: You okay?

Cas: Yes, but…

Dean: Good.

Dean Winchester to Castiel You okay after Belphigor

Belphigor: Wow. Awkward.

It was. Apparently Cas and Dean are not going to see eye to eye for a while. Jack’s death has put a wedge between them that will take a little time to work through. Castiel is taking his death hard, looking bereft, and Dean is too – but he’s expressing it with lots of anger. Neither are very good at talking about it.

The ending scene was well worth the price of admission. Dean opens the Impala’s trunk and faces his brother, saying it’s “time we fixed you up.”

Sam protests, but Dean insists.

Dean: Let me see it.

Sam exposes the wound, and Dean checks him over, something you know the Winchesters have done for each other countless times over the decades. Scenes like this, small moments that show us what their lives are like, are the things I treasure the most. I was over the moon to get one in the premiere.

He’s all big brother proud, doing what has defined his life for most of his life – taking care of his little (big) brother.

Their relationship is much more reciprocal now, though. They start to talk, and now it’s Sam who’s in a sense taking care of Dean.

Dean’s angry, feeling a little hopeless, talking about how they’ve just been rats in a maze.

Dean: We could go right, we could go left, but we were still in the maze. So what did it all mean?

Sam: It meant a lot. We still saved people. And now he’s gone. He gets bored, he moves on. And you know what? GOOD. Because it’s just us now, for the first time. If – WHEN – we win this, it’s just us, and we’re free.

For a second, we get a flashback to the identical iconic scene in the pilot, the way that episode ended – and began this fifteen-year incredible journey.

As it all began…

I loved it. The symmetry of it, the recognition of just how iconic and how meaningful that scene is. I loved that it ended the very first season and ended the first episode of the last season. I let the tears fall and was glad for them. That’s what I want. I want to feel, I don’t want to hold back. I want this show to inspire the kind of strong emotions that it has always brought, even when some of those emotions are the intense grief of impending loss.

It wasn’t a perfect episode, but there was plenty for me to love in that 42 minutes. And for now, I’m grateful.

Tonight it will be “Supernatural,” episode number two – two down, eighteen to go.

I’ve got my tissues ready for “Supernatural” 1502 Raising Hell, and we’re excited for the return of Kevin Tran!

Lizzo’s complicated ‘Truth Hurts’ copyright claim

Lizzo is quickly learning how quickly celebrity brings out everything from the woodwork as her megahit “Truth Hurts” is coming under fire with a copyright claim. The Minneapolis singer spent years working hard to be known, and now that everyone knows her name, some want a piece of the action.

The song struck a chord in the country with its lyrics being a true anthem of empowerment, and it’s become a pop culture phenom appearing in memes by celebrities from TikTok users to Hillary Clinton. “Truth Hurts” put Lizzo into the spotlight for being an outspoken, body-positive strong black woman who has been expected to be a Grammy contender this year.

What started as behind the scenes whispers has grown into a louder voice asking who actually wrote the anthemic song. This has been a dispute for several months now as the song credits four writers; Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson; Ricky Reed, her primary producer; Tele, another producer; and Jesse Saint John.

Now the debate begins about the real truth behind Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.” This also shines a light on copyright laws in America and how vague they can sometimes be for artists.

Lizzo’s breakthrough tune, which spent six weeks on top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart this year, features the signature line: “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch.” The lyric originated from a 2017 tweet by singer Mina Lioness and was turned into a popular meme, which was then used in Lizzo’s song “Healthy,” created in 2017.

The songwriting brothers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen, who worked on “Healthy,” claim states that they deserve writing credit on “Truth Hurts” since the song borrows from “Healthy,” a tune they co-wrote.

“We were never contacted about being credited for the use of the parts of “Healthy” (melody, lyrics, and chords) that appear in “Truth Hurts,” Justin Raisen wrote Tuesday on Instagram, explaining that they worked on “Healthy” in April 2017.

The songwriters credited on “Truth Hurts” are Lizzo, Ricky Reed, Tele and Jesse Saint John. “Truth Hurts” was originally released in September 2017 but got a boost this year after it was featured in the Netflix film “Someone Great,” released on April 19, the same day Lizzo dropped her album, “Cuz I Love You.”

“Truth Hurts” wasn’t originally featured on the 11-track “Cuz I Love You,” but her record label added it to the deluxe version of the album, released on May 3.

“After reaching out to Ricky Reed and Lizzo’s team about fixing it, we put the song in dispute in 2017 when it came out,” Justin Raisen continued on Instagram. “We’ve tried to sort this out quietly for the last two years, only asking for 5% each but were shutdown every time.”

But Lizzo’s lawyer said in a statement that “The Raisens are not writers of” Lizzo’s international hit.

“They did not collaborate with Lizzo or anyone else to create this song, and they did not help write any of the material that they now seek to profit from, which is why they expressly renounced any claim to the work, in writing, months ago,” Cynthia Arato said in a statement Wednesday.

“Although it has become all too commonplace for successful artists to be subjected to these type of opportunistic claims, it is nevertheless disappointing that after all of her hard work, Lizzo has to respond to this specious claim.”

It was reported that the Raisens rescinded an earlier claim over “Truth Hurts” through their publisher, Kobalt.

Outside of the all-genre Hot 100 chart, “Truth Hurts” spent seven weeks at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs and Hot rap songs chart, respectively. It was submitted for the 2020 Grammys in categories like song and record of the year — where songwriters and producers also earn nominations; the Recording Academy will announce its nominees on Nov. 20.

“The last thing we want to do is throw any negativity toward Lizzo’s momentum and movement as a cultural figure. If we believe in what she’s preaching, believing in ourselves & our own voices is something we thought she’d understand,” Justin Raisen wrote.

The brothers are careful to praise Lizzo as a singular and inspiring force. “What she is doing for culture is unlike anything we’ve seen a modern pop star do, maybe ever,” they said in an interview. But as their efforts to obtain credit — as well as a share of the royalties for what may well become a multimillion-dollar song — have dragged on without resolution, they decided to speak out.“It’s not fair that we were not included,” said Justin Raisen, who has developed a specialty working with female artists like Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth.

Lizzo is currently selling T-shirts on her website that read “100% that bitch ” — the line created by Lioness (She didn’t immediately reply to an email from Movie TV Tech Geeks seeking comment).

Cynthia S. Arato, a lawyer for Lizzo, strongly denied the Raisens’ claim.

“The Raisens are not writers of ‘Truth Hurts,’” Arato said in a statement. “They did not collaborate with Lizzo or anyone else to create this song, and they did not help write any of the material that they now seek to profit from, which is why they expressly renounced any claim to the work, in writing, months ago.”

For an industry that has already been shaken by controversial copyright cases, like the multimillion-dollar jury verdicts over Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” the “Truth Hurts” episode raises another knotty question: Who has the right to claim authorship over even small phrases in a song, when multiple people were “in the room” when they were created?

According to the Raisen brothers — who grew up as rock fans on Long Island and are now part of the songwriting and production circuit in Los Angeles — they held a joint songwriting session in April 2017 with Lizzo and two other writers, Saint John and Yves Rothman.

While the five of them worked on a song called “Healthy,” the brothers said, Saint John pulled up a meme on his phone based on a tweet that read: “I did a DNA test and found out I’m 100% that bitch.” They all laughed, and Jeremiah said that he suggested including the lyric in the song.

Lizzo sang it almost identically to the way those words appear in “Truth Hurts,” as demonstrated in a recording from the session that the brothers shared with media outlets and later posted on Instagram. Jeremiah also said he helped write the melody for “Healthy,” including the “DNA test” line.

(In another complication to the song’s origins, the woman who wrote the tweet, a British singer who goes by the name Mina Lioness, has complained bitterly that she, too, deserves credit.)

“If Ricky and Lizzo’s team decide to settle this dispute with us, we would like to share some of the proceeds with Mina for her influence on Healthy,” Justin Raisen wrote.

Danny Riordan, an aspiring songwriter and friend of the Raisens who said he was present for part of the “Healthy” session, remembered the excitement in the room as the song boomed over the studio speakers.

“Everyone was like, ‘Oh my God, this is going to be huge,’” Riordan said.

Five months after the session that produced “Healthy,” “Truth Hurts” was released, and the Raisens said they were surprised that Lizzo’s song contained the “DNA test” line but without credit given to them or Rothman.

“There was a bittersweet emotion, because deep in our hearts we know that we were a part of this song,” Jeremiah Raisen said. “We should feel validated but we’re not.”

The Raisens said they began their campaign shortly after, seeking 5 percent each of the songwriting royalties from “Truth Hurts.” As the song climbed to No. 1 this summer, the brothers took up something of a vigilante campaign on social media, posting congratulatory messages to Lizzo while also aggressively arguing their case.

But the Raisens’ case may be complicated by the fact that they rescinded an earlier claim over “Truth Hurts” through their publisher, Kobalt, which Lizzo’s representatives believe should bar them from pursuing the matter further.

Lizzo’s representatives do not contest that the session yielded “Healthy” and its “DNA test” line. The crux of the disagreement is who did what: The brothers say the session was conducted with the understanding that all parties were contributing to the resulting work, and that Lizzo’s vocal was tailored to the instrumental track they created. Lizzo’s representatives say the Raisens were not involved in creating Lizzo’s vocal line and so have no claim to it now.But the law may favor the Raisens on this point, said Don Gorder, the chairman of the music business and management department of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

“Copyright law says that if a work is created and it’s clearly the intention of all the people who contributed that it’s merged into a whole,” Professor Gorder said, “that they are all equal owners of the song unless they agree otherwise.”

As part of their campaign, the Raisens commissioned an opinion from a musicologist, who concluded that “Truth Hurts” has “some strikingly similar lyric and musical elements to those in ‘Healthy,’” and that Lizzo’s hit “would not exist in its present form without the existence of and the borrowing from ‘Healthy.’”

Lizzo’s representatives portray the Raisens’ claim as a common hazard for artists with a big hit and say that theirs is baseless. After six weeks at No. 1, “Truth Hurts” finally fell to second place on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart on Monday, replaced by Travis Scott’s “Highest in the Room.”

“Although it has become all too commonplace for successful artists to be subjected to these types of opportunistic claims,” Arato said, “it is nevertheless disappointing that after all of her hard work, Lizzo has to respond to this specious claim.”

The disagreement over “Truth Hurts” may involve another precious currency: a Grammy. Although the song is two years old, Grammy rules allow it to be nominated for next year’s awards because it was part of a 2019 album — it was added to “Cuz I Love You” as a bonus track — and had not been previously submitted. (The song’s popularity exploded this year thanks in part to TikTok memes and a prominent Netflix placement, and as Lizzo’s public appearances established her as a charismatic new star.)At the Grammys, “Truth Hurts” is under consideration for both record and song of the year, and Lizzo is considered a leading candidate for best new artist. Nominations will be announced Nov. 20.

Tarzan Actor Ron Ely Incident

A woman was killed at the home of former “Tarzan” actor Ron Ely and sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a suspect on the property, authorities in Southern California said Wednesday.

A Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office statement did not identify any of those involved but noted that a disabled elderly man living at the home was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The deaths occurred Tuesday night in Hope Ranch, a suburb of luxury homes outside Santa Barbara.

A 911 call after 8 p.m. reported a family disturbance and deputies found a woman who was the victim of an apparent homicide, authorities said.

Deputies shot and killed a suspect they found on the property in response to an unspecified threat, the sheriff’s statement said.

The 81-year-old Ely played the title character on the NBC series “Tarzan,” which ran from 1966 to 1968.

The tall, musclebound Ely was not quite as well-known as Johnny Weismuller, the Olympic swimmer who played the role in movies in the 1930s and 40s, but formed the image of the shirtless, loincloth-wearing character remembered by many in the baby-boom generation. Tarzan was a fictional character raised in the African jungle.

Ely also played the title character in the 1975 action film “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze,” but otherwise had mostly small roles in TV and films including the 1958 movie musical “South Pacific.”

Ely was host of the Miss America pageant in 1980 and 1981 and married a former Miss Florida, Valerie Lundeen, with whom he had three children.

Google pitches privacy with Pixel 4, Zuckerberg political heat builds

As big tech comes under more intense scrutiny when it comes to privacy issues, Google has decided to make a big claim with some reservations. With the unveiling of the Pixel 4 smartphone, Google said that it cares about users’ data, but then, it also turned around to let you know how much they still need that same user data.

Google’s latest phone and smart-home devices came packaged with a not-so-subtle message: Google cares about your privacy. Does it?

The tech company has had a complicated relationship with user information in the past. Google’s latest steps offer consumers some additional protections, although it’s unclear how much more secure users will feel.

Google unveiled a new Pixel smartphone and other hardware devices on Tuesday, all aimed at getting people more hooked on services powered by the company’s Google Assistant and other artificial-intelligence technology.

But privacy has emerged as a bigger issue with these products thanks to the growing popularity of always-listening “smart speakers” and similar devices. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple have all recently acknowledged employing human contractors to listen to and transcribe some voice recordings captured by AI software.

Most such AI work, from interpreting voice requests to answering questions to turning on your lights, takes place in the cloud, not on your device. Users have very little control of what happens to their data in the cloud.

On Tuesday, though, Google emphasized that much of what you do on its new phones will stay there. Its new facial recognition unlock feature won’t transmit details to Google servers for processing, for instance, and its Assistant can also handle many queries directly on the phone. A new recording transcription feature and radar technology that recognizes gestures are also done on the device.

“You need to know what your data is safe,” Rick Osterloh, Google senior vice president of hardware, said at the company’s New York launch event Tuesday. “When computing is always available, designing for computing and privacy becomes more important than ever.”

Apple and Amazon have also emphasized their privacy commitments at recent product launches.

The goal is to give people more choice over privacy settings, Osterloh said. Nest speakers and cameras now come with physical switches to turn off cameras and mics, for example.

Still, Google relies heavily on customer information to build user-specific profiles it uses to target digital advertising, which produces the vast majority of its income.

The Assistant, akin in basic function to Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, is emerging as Google’s latest digital data collector. It can learn more about you from your queries and can direct you to other Google services such as maps and search, which also feed into Google’s multi-billion dollar advertising business.

“Their end game is trying to collect all this data and target you with advertising,” said Victoria Petrock, principal analyst at eMarketer. “The voice is a whole new way to capture people’s behaviors.”

The more helpful the Assistant becomes, the more likely people are to use it.

On the hardware front, Google’s new Pixel 4 features a fancier camera that will recognize people who’ve appeared previously in your photos in order to automatically focus on them in new shots.

The new phone also comes with motion-sensing technology that allows people to skip songs or switch apps by gesturing near the phone.

The Pixel 4 will carry a starting price tag of $799 — $100 more than the entry-level iPhone 11 — and will go on sale Oct. 24. The larger XL version will cost $899, or about $200 less than the similar-sized iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Google’s phones have been well-reviewed, but have yet to make much of a splash in the market dominated by Apple, Huawei, and Samsung. In fact, Google’s hardware products have never been big moneymakers. Rather, they offer a way for Google to showcase its money-making services.

The company also unveiled true wireless earbuds, called Pixel Buds, Google’s answer to Apple’s AirPods. The new model, which will go on sale early next year for $179, does away with the wire that connects the two buds.

Google introduced Nest Mini, the smaller version of its smart speaker. It comes out next Tuesday for $49. Google’s refreshed Wi-Fi router, Nest Wi-Fi, will be available in the coming weeks for $269. A new Pixelbook Go laptop goes on sale in January starting at $649.

Google hardware team, including many former Google Glass engineers, work from a light-filled, architecturally impressive building near the company’s main campus in Mountain View, California. The building is complete with a “color lab” for finding the perfect device hues, a materials library for all sorts of elemental inspiration and a small model shop to build device prototypes on site.

“We started by defining what it feels like to hold Google in your hands,” hardware design executive Ivy Ross said. “The good thing about coming a little bit late to the hardware arena is you get to stand back and look at everyone else.”

One of the challenges this time around was finding a way to make the products more sustainable, a feat especially notable on the Nest Mini, which has a “fabric” casing made of yarn created from plastic water bottles.

mark zuckerberg facebook feels political heat now 2020

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Feeling the Heat

Mark Zuckerberg defended meetings he’s reportedly had with conservative leaders after #DeleteFacebook began trending on social media.

Politico reported this week that the Facebook CEO held private meetings with, among others, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson and conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Conservatives have long accused Facebook of suppressing conservative political view and the company has tried to dispel that belief.

Zuckerberg says he meets with many people “across the spectrum on lots of different issues.”

“Meeting new people and hearing from a wide range of viewpoints is part of learning,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. “If you haven’t tried it, I suggest you do!”

Facebook has fought allegations since the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election that it’s not doing enough to stop bogus accounts and political ads on its platform.

Those charges are surfacing again ahead of the 2020 election, with Democratic candidates Joe Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren demanding that Facebook remove Trump campaign ads that make false claims.

elizabeth warren fake facebook ad for mark zuckerberg trump 2019

After Facebook refused to remove the ad saying that it’s not a political gatekeeper, Warren paid for a fake political ad that claimed Zuckerberg and Facebook have endorsed President Donald Trump.

The ad states in the next sentence that it’s not true.

Pressure on the social media platform is escalating as the 2020 general election approaches.

Biden said that he’d be open to breaking up Facebook. Sen. Kamala Harris of California has said she’s would consider new controls on the tech giant.

Facebook faces the risk of more accusations of political bias by blocking or suspending accounts, but also of creating a toxic online environment by doing nothing to remove bogus political ads and groups.

Research has revealed that millions of people get at least some political news on social platforms. A Pew Research Center survey found that a majority of American adults believe the news they see on such platforms is largely inaccurate.

‘Joker’ continues box office reign hitting $200 million in 11 days

0

DC Films has another hit on its hands with “Joker,” proving that the first weekend box office win was no fluke: “Joker” is a bona fide hit already making history. Monday, which was a holiday for some, saw the film bring in another $8.4 million domestically pushing it past the $200 million mark. In 11 days, that is a domestic haul of $201.99 million. The studio gave it a very conservative weekend estimate of $40 million, but it blew past that with nearly $56 million.

“Joker” set a new record for the biggest second weekend for an October film in box office history, passing “Gravity” from 2013 which brought in $43.1. It broke the previous record set by “Venom” for Friday box office along with being a career-best opening for director Todd Phillips. His highest opening up to then was “The Hangover 2” with $85.9 million. It was also a career-high for Joaquin Phoenix whose highest opening up to then was $60.1 million with “Signs” in 2002.

This is the highest-grossing film for Warner Bros. in 2019 globally. Studio analysts were impressed with the only 13 percent Monday to Monday drop for “Joker”. We can assume that the film will hit the $600 million worldwide mark within the next 48 hours making it the eighth biggest R-rated grosser right behind “The Passion of the Christ” ($612 million), “Logan” ($619 million), “It” ($700 million), “Matrix Reloaded” ($742 million), “Deadpool” ($783 million), “Deadpool 2” ($785 million) along with China’s unrated “Wolf Warrior 2” ($854 million).

The R-rated comic book villain origin story had a phenomenal second weekend at the box office, topping the charts once more over newcomers such as the animated “The Addams Family” and the Will Smith action pic “Gemini Man.”

Warner Bros. said Sunday that “Joker” added $55.9 million from North American theaters this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $193.6 million.

“Not only did Joker over-perform in North America, but also internationally where the acclaim, buzz and controversy surrounding the film resonated strongly with moviegoers who put the film at the top of their cinematic priority list,” Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted. “Movies that become part of the general conversation due to their controversial nature are often those that transcend their status as a movie to become a cultural event and this is exactly what happened with Joker.”

Not only are the pure grosses impressive, but “Joker” also dropped only 42% from its record-breaking debut.

For comic book films, which are often front-loaded and regularly see second weekend falls that are over 50%, it’s a notably small dip. It’s also a slightly lower drop than “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” — both of which had higher initial openings and went on to have long lives in theaters.

“These are incredible numbers and really reflect how interested and excited people were,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore.

The film had a rollercoaster ride to release, with highs like winning the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, and lows when concerns about the film inciting violence made headlines and prompted increased security at many theaters across the country. But audiences have spoken with their dollars and “were not going to be deterred,” Dergarabedian said.

“It shows that content wins. A great movie will rise up above all the noise over whatever controversy or security concerns there were,” he added. “You’re totally left out of the water cooler conversation if you haven’t seen ‘Joker.’”

Internationally, “Joker” added $123.7 million from 79 markets, bringing its global total to $548.3 million after just 12 days in theaters.

“Joker’s” second weekend success played well alongside the counterprogramming of the kid-friendly “Addams Family,” which exceeded expectations and came in a strong second with $30.3 million.

DC Films upcoming film slate includes “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, “Wonder Woman 1984” on June 5, 2020, “The Batman” on June 25, 2021, “The Suicide Squad” on August 6, 2021 and the highly anticipated “Aquaman 2” on December 16, 2022.

United Artists Releasing distributed the film from MGM and BRON Creative that features the voices of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron and Bette Midler. “The Addams Family” defied middling reviews (43% on Rotten Tomatoes) and benefited from a marketplace with relatively few family friendly options in theaters right now, aside from “Abominable” which is now in its third weekend.

The ambitious, star-driven “Gemini Man” was not so lucky. The visual effects-heavy Ang Lee film about an assassin on the run from a younger version of himself (both played by Smith using state of the art de-aging technology) opened in third place with only $20.5 million. Even Smith’s disastrous “After Earth” had a better debut ($27.5 million).

Reviews were overwhelmingly poor (it’s currently at 26% on Rotten Tomatoes) but “Gemini Man” also had the “Joker” factor to contend with, which may have contributed to the disappointing opening, according to Dergarabedian.

“Gemini Man” was not a cheap endeavor either. The film from Paramount and Skydance cost a reported $140 million to make after rebates and will have a difficult time breaking even.

Rounding out the top five were “Abominable,” with $6.2 million, and “Downton Abbey,” with $4.9 million.

In limited release, Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” had an extraordinary weekend, earning $376,264 from only 3 locations. Its $125,421 per theater average is a record for 2019.

“It’s amazing how well (“Parasite”) did. It’s one of the biggest stories of the weekend,” Dergarabedian said. “That per theater average means that those movie theaters were full. The demand far outweighed the supply.”

Neon is distributing the class-conscious Korean thriller, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and is already a massive hit internationally, with over $70.9 million from South Korea alone. With near-unanimous rave reviews, “Parasite” is also expected to be an awards contender and will be expanding in North America in the coming weeks.

Facebook’s Libra gets unbalanced as majors pull out

0

Mark Zuckerberg is feeling a rather large setback with his Libra plan to create a whole new Facebook currency. First, Paypal left last week, Congress wants to discuss this with him, and now several large companies that would have cemented his new cryptocurrency plan are out. These sudden departures leave Libra with no major United States payment processor, which could kill this venture.

On Friday, Visa and Mastercard along with Stripe, eBay, and Marcado Pago announced their departure from Facebook’s Libra project, a potentially fatal blow to the social network’s plan for a worldwide digital currency.

A Visa spokesperson told media outlets. “Visa has decided not to join the Libra Association at this time,” the spokesperson said. “We will continue to evaluate and our ultimate decision will be determined by a number of factors, including the Association’s ability to fully satisfy all requisite regulatory expectations.”

PayPal was the first of Libra’s big partners to leave, announcing last week it would no longer be involved.

“We highly respect the vision of the Libra Association,” eBay said in a statement. “However, eBay has made the decision to not move forward as a founding member. At this time, we are focused on rolling out eBay’s managed payments experience for our customers.”

Stripe gave a similar explanation for its withdrawal. “Stripe is supportive of projects that aim to make online commerce more accessible for people around the world,” the company said. “Libra has this potential. We will follow its progress closely and remain open to working with the Libra Association at a later stage.” Mastercard did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In response, Libra Association policy chief Dante Disparte thanked the companies for their ongoing support of the organization’s mission.

“We are focused on moving forward and continuing to build a strong association of some of the world’s leading enterprises, social impact organizations and other stakeholders,” Disparte said. “We look forward to the inaugural Libra Association Council meeting in just 3 days and announcing the initial members of the Libra Association.”

Facebook has faced substantial criticism over its plans to create a separate, private currency system to allow cross-border payments. The Libra Association, based in Switzerland, was supposed to give the currency project a comfortable arm’s length distance from Facebook, which wouldn’t own Libra.

Despite those efforts, financial regulators, as well as members of Congress on both sides of the political divide, noted the privacy issues raised with the social networking company controlling a currency, while also expressing concern about money laundering. Even President Donald Trump tweeted that Facebook should be subject to U.S. banking laws if the Libra project were to move forward.

The impact of Libra’s loss of Visa and Mastercard cannot be understated. The two hold an effective duopoly over credit and debit cards in the U.S. and Europe, and are making substantial inroads into developing countries’ payment systems. Their initial agreement to join the Libra Association instantly gave Facebook’s project legitimacy. It also gave Facebook access to Visa and Mastercard’s networks, which could have given a pathway for users to convert traditional currency into Libra.

But both companies made it clear from the onset that their interest in Libra was at least partly out of curiosity. It now appears that the political pressure on Facebook to drop the project was enough to convince a chunk of the original members to cut ties.

Visa said Friday that it would re-examine a potential membership in the Libra Association if and when Facebook is able “to fully satisfy all requisite regulatory expectations” in its development of Libra — a sign that the regulatory and political hurdles Libra is facing were becoming too much to bear.

“Visa’s continued interest in Libra stems from our belief that well-regulated blockchain-based networks could extend the value of secure digital payments to a greater number of people and places, particularly in emerging and developing markets,” the company said.

Gartner analyst Avivah Litan said that while the defections are “a big setback” for Facebook and Libra, they won’t kill the project.

“It’s not the end of the effort, it just becomes much more contentious,” she said.

With the recent departures, Libra’s membership now consists mostly of venture capital firms and nonprofits. Uber, Spotify and Lyft were still listed as members on Friday, and none of them responded to requests for comment. Vodafone, the Europe-based telecommunications company that has a substantial presence in Africa and has specialization in mobile payments, was also still listed as a member.

In response to the news, Libra chief David Marcus, a former president of former Libra Association, PayPal, conceded the news was not “great in the short term,” but “liberating” to “know that you’re on to something when so much pressure builds up.” Marcus also casts the news of Mastercard and Visa’s withdrawal from the project as the two payment giants simply waiting until there’s proper “regulatory clarity” on Libra.

big tech under fire from politicians on both sides 2019

Big Tech Feels Political Heat From Both Parties

Republicans and Democrats don’t agree on health care, immigration or taxing the rich. But one subject draws critics from both parties: Big Tech.

The list of grievances is long and growing by the week. Companies like Google, Facebook and Amazon are too big and powerful. They’re bad for privacy, public discourse, democracy and small business. They’re spying on us, contributing to economic inequality and hooking us and our children on addictive, useless services.

The companies themselves object to these characterizations, though how loudly they object varies.

Sen. Kamala Harris, a California Democrat, urged Twitter to suspend President Donald Trump’s account for violating the service’s rules, while Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri is battling what he considers tech companies’ bias against conservatives. Hawley has also told Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg that he should sell off WhatsApp and Instagram.

The companies are trying to maintain a neutral stance, even if that draws the ire of politicians as divergent as the president and those trying to impeach him. Behind the scenes, though, they are spending millions on lobbying in hopes of warding off breakups or intrusive regulation.

Not that there is any danger of either happening any time soon, especially with an ongoing impeachment probe. Still, talking up Big Tech’s problems has proven to be popular political rhetoric.

When it comes to policing content, social media services are “caught between a rock and a hard place,” said Andrew Guess, a Princeton University political scientist who studies social media and its effects on political opinion.

Blocking or suspending accounts for hate speech can prompt complaints of political bias or censorship, but a hands-off approach may be viewed as a free pass to politicians like Trump.

“Anything they do is going to attract criticism,” Guess said. “That, of course, makes them a target.”

Beyond discourse and privacy, antitrust concerns have emerged as a major concern for lawmakers and candidates. This wasn’t the case in 2016, when grumbling about the outsized power of tech was largely confined to activists and those on the most liberal end of the spectrum.

Leading the pack has been Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Democratic presidential candidate who in March proposed breaking up big tech companies. She garnered immediate support, even from rivals such as Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican who retweeted Warren for what he said was the first time. Cruz said “she’s right — Big Tech has way too much power to silence Free Speech.”

Since then, calling out the tech behemoths and other big corporations has been a pillar of Warren’s presidential campaign. Sen. Bernie Sanders, another leading Democratic candidate, has also said breaking up Amazon, Google and Apple is “something we should definitely take a look at.”

Still, while there have been congressional hearings, investigations and fines, including a record $5 billion against Facebook, little has changed for Big Tech.

A Republican-controlled Senate is unlikely to pass legislation that seems too anti-business. That includes breaking up tech companies seen as too monopolistic. The same likely goes for any privacy law that restricts companies’ ability to target ads to their liking.

While the two parties agree that Big Tech has problems, they often differ on what those problems are — and how to fix them. You won’t find many Democrats complaining about tech’s perceived conservative bias, for instance. Nor will you find many conservatives complaining of algorithmic bias against people of color.

Trump has been uneven in his criticisms. Amazon has been a frequent target, though that is due in part to CEO Jeff Bezos’s ownership of The Washington Post. He’s met with Zuckerberg privately, but he’s also tweeted that “Facebook was always anti-Trump” and accused it of colluding with the news media against him.

Amid all this, at least in public, the companies have mostly kept a low profile. But there are occasional glimpses of behind-the-scenes activity. Leaked audio from an internal Facebook meeting in July captured Zuckerberg acknowledging that if “someone like” Warren is elected, he expects Facebook to fight back — and prevail — against efforts to break it up in court. But he added: “And does that still suck for us? Yeah.”

Amazon, by contrast, briefly tried to debate the candidates on Twitter.

In April, after Warren complained that Amazon and other big tech companies have “too much power,” the company responded by pointing the finger at its main rival: “Walmart is much larger; Amazon is less than 4% of U.S. retail.”

When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said in a TV interview in June that Amazon pays workers “starvation wages,” the company tweeted that she “is just wrong.”

And Amazon gave former Vice President Joe Biden a corporate tax lesson after he tweeted that it shouldn’t be paying a “lower tax rate than firefighters and teachers.”

“We pay every penny we owe,” Amazon tweeted back. “Congress designed tax laws to encourage companies to reinvest in the American economy. We have.”

This was in June. Amazon seems to have backed off since.

Expect the political pushback to continue, from both parties, said Joshua Tucker, co-director of New York University’s Social Media and Political Participation Lab.

“It’s a bipartisan issue,” he said. “But the right and the left are criticizing it for different reasons.”

Donald Trump’s temporary cease fire with China tariffs

0

Donald Trump finally had some good news to share on Friday that will hold off that worrisome tariff hike on $250 billion in Chinese imports that were set to take effect Tuesday, and China agreed to buy $40 billion to $50 billion in U.S. farm products as the world’s two biggest economies reached a cease-fire in their 15-month trade war. It’s only a temporary fix to a much larger issue that many Americans have been feeling in 2019.

Trump spoke from the Oval Office stating that the two sides had reached an oral “phase one” agreement that could take several weeks to write up and would hopefully be signed in November. Getting both sides in agreement to sign this could wind up taking much longer, White House sources said.

The White House said the two sides made some progress on the thornier issues, including China’s lax protection of foreign intellectual property. But more work remains to be done on key differences in later negotiations, including U.S. allegations that China forces foreign countries to hand over trade secrets in return for access to the Chinese market.

The U.S. and Chinese negotiators have so far reached their tentative agreement only in principle. No documents have been signed.

President Donald Trump announced the trade truce in a White House meeting with the top Chinese negotiator, Vice Premier Liu He. The news followed two days of talks in Washington, the 13th round of negotiations.

“It took us a long time to get here, but it’s something that’s going to be great for China and great for the USA,” Trump said.

Trump has yet to drop plans to impose tariffs that are set to take effect Dec. 15 on an additional $160 billion in Chinese products — a move that would extend the sanctions to just about everything China ships to the United States. The December tariffs would cover a wide range of consumer goods, including clothes, toys, and smartphones and would likely be felt by many American shoppers.

While providing scant details of just what was agreed to Friday, the White House said Beijing has pledged to be more transparent about how it sets the value of its currency, the yuan. The administration has accused China of manipulating the yuan lower to give its exporters a competitive advantage in foreign markets.

China has also agreed to open its markets to U.S. banks and other financial services providers, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

Earlier Friday, China announced a timetable for carrying out a promise to allow full foreign ownership of some finance businesses, starting with futures traders on Jan. 1. Ownership limits will be ended for mutual fund companies on April 1 and for securities firm on Dec. 1. Until now, foreign investors have been limited to owning 51% of such businesses.

For now, the two sides have come to “almost a complete agreement” on both financial services and currency issues, Mnuchin said.

most traded goods for united states china tariff ware

The trade war has inflicted an economic toll on both countries. U.S. manufacturers have been hurt by rising costs from the tariffs and by uncertainty over when and how the trade hostilities may end.

“They’re trying to de-escalate,” said Timothy Keeler, a former chief of staff at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representatives. “I think it serves both sides’ interests because both sides were feeling pain.”

Stock prices had been up substantially all day, mainly in anticipation of a significant trade agreement. But once the White House announced the contours of the tentative accord, the market shed some of its gains. The Dow Jones industrial average, which had risen more than 500 points at its high, closed up 319.

The U.S. and Chinese negotiators did not deal this week with a major dispute over the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on Huawei, saying it poses a threat to national security because its equipment can be used for espionage. Trump has said he was willing to use Huawei as a bargaining chip in the trade talks.

The United States still has in place tariffs on more than $360 billion worth of Chinese imports. What changed Friday was that Trump suspended plans to raise existing tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese products from 25% to 30% next week.

Beijing has lashed back by taxing about $120 billion in U.S. goods, focusing on soybeans and other agricultural products in a shot at Trump supporters in rural America.

Last year, U.S. farm exports to China plummeted 53% to less than $9.2 billion. The additional Chinese purchases promised Friday — up to $50 billion over two years — would amount to a substantial boost to U.S. farmers.

But the toughest issues remain unresolved. And so do the details of what has apparently been agreed to in principle.

“This is an encouraging first phase,” said Craig Allen, president of the U.S.-China Business Council. “We await word on how implementation will be measured and in what timeframe, as well as details on scheduling subsequent phases”

Among the skeptics of Friday’s agreement is Derek Scissors, a China expert at the American Enterprise Institute, who suggested that the deal amounted to merely a temporary pause in the conflict.

“The president is acting as if a lot of Chinese concessions have been nailed down, and they just haven’t,” Scissors said.

The two countries were close to a more comprehensive deal in early May. But talks stalled after the U.S. accused China of reneging on earlier commitments. Trump acknowledged that Friday’s deal has yet to be put down on paper but said that wouldn’t be a problem.

“China wants it badly, and we want it also,” Trump said. “We should be able to get that done over the next four weeks.”

Myron Brilliant, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, drew encouragement from Friday’s developments.

“Finally, a ray of hope for the U.S.-China trade relationship,” he said. “While there remains significant work ahead to address many of the most important U.S. trade and investment priorities, we will continue to lend our full support.”

Still, Gregory Daco, an economist at Oxford Economics, suggested that the partial nature of the deal won’t relieve much of the uncertainty surrounding trade policy that has discouraged many American companies from investing in new equipment and expanding.

“For businesses, this will mean less damage, not greater certainty,” Daco said in a research note.

Daco has estimated that the trade fight will cut U.S. growth by about 0.6 percentage points in 2020. Friday’s pact might reduce that slightly to 0.5 percentage point, he said.

“Beyond the promises and niceties, the deal doesn’t address key underlying issues,” Daco wrote.

The two countries are deadlocked primarily over the Trump administration’s assertions that China deploys predatory tactics — including outright theft — in a sharp-elbowed drive to become the global leader in robotics, self-driving cars, and other advanced technology.

Beijing has been reluctant to make the kind of substantive policy reforms that would satisfy the administration. Doing so would likely require scaling back China’s aspirations for technological supremacy, which it sees as crucial to its prosperity.

Mark Zuckerberg heads back to Congress for Facebook Libra chat

Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg should soon be getting his own chair in Congress as many times as he’s gone, but with his Libra digital currency, he’ll be returning once again. It’s no surprise as his new plan to create a new form of money could wind up in that ‘too big to fail category’ that is very scary to many Americans.

Many can recall how the government had to bail many of those companies out in 2008, and with signs of another recession heading at us, bailing out Facebook isn’t something they relish the thought of. Many Americans would agree, but Zuckerberg and company are moving forward, but after all those pesky privacy issues they keep having, this could be an uphill battle for the social media titan.

Zuckerberg will appear before Congress this month as the tech giant is under pressure from lawmakers and regulators over its massive market power and record of privacy breaches.

Rep. Maxine Waters, the California Democrat who heads the House Financial Services Committee, announced Wednesday that Zuckerberg will testify at a hearing by the panel on Oct. 23. The focus will be on Facebook’s plan to create a digital currency and its role in housing. The company agreed in a legal settlement in March to overhaul its ad-targeting systems to prevent discrimination in housing, credit and employment ads.

Lawmakers from both parties and top regulators, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, have criticized Facebook’s plan for the new currency, expressing concern that it could be used for illicit activity such as money laundering or drug trafficking. There also is a concern that the massive reserve created with money used to buy the new currency, to be called Libra, could supplant the Fed and destabilize the financial system, and that consumers could be hurt by Libra losses.

“Mark looks forward to testifying before the House Financial Services Committee and responding to lawmakers’ questions,” Facebook said in a statement Wednesday.

In July, Waters and other committee Democrats sent a letter to Facebook requesting a halt on moving forward with the currency and with the digital wallet, called Calibra, which would be used in the new currency system. House Democrats also have threatened legislation that would block big tech companies from getting into banking.

Waters has called Libra “a new Swiss-based financial system” that potentially is too big to fail and could require a taxpayer bailout.

France’s finance minister said Wednesday that the European Union should not allow Facebook to develop the currency project on “European territory” because it threatens the monetary sovereignty of member countries. “It should not be the role of a private company to try to get a sovereign currency like a sovereign state,” Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said.

Unlike digital currencies such as bitcoin or Ethereum, Facebook’s plan calls for Libra to be backed by real currencies.

David Marcus, the Facebook executive leading the project, told lawmakers over two days of congressional hearings in July that Facebook would not launch the currency project until it had received all the necessary approvals from regulators and secured safeguards to protect the privacy of users’ data. He said Facebook will not control Libra because Facebook will be only one of about 100 companies and nonprofits in an association that will manage the currency.

The plan would open low-cost online commerce to millions of people around the world who lack access to bank accounts, and would make it cheaper to send money across borders, Marcus said. He did not agree to a suspension of the plan or a pilot project, as several lawmakers urged.

Facebook, a social media giant based in Menlo Park, California, with nearly 2.5 billion users around the globe, is under heavy scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators following a series of data privacy scandals, including lapses in opening the personal data of millions of users to President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

The Justice Department, the Federal Trade Commission and the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee are all conducting investigations of Facebook and the other big tech companies amid accusations of abuse of their market power to crush competition.

Zuckerberg had three days of private meetings in Washington last month with Trump and several lawmakers who, like the president, are critics of the tech industry. He also met with the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee to discuss ways to prevent foreign actors from disrupting next year’s elections. In a separate session, Zuckerberg told the leaders of the House Judiciary Committee that the company would cooperate with their antitrust investigation.

Zuckerberg last testified to Congress in the spring, when he was questioned about privacy, election interference, and other issues.

‘Joker’ proves Hollywood risks can pay off at box office

Controversy can be a fickle thing where at one time it could nearly guarantee record audience turnout as was the case with “Joker,” which smashed records as the largest October launch of all time. In other cases like Nate Parker’s “Birth Of A Nation,” negative press killed it immediately. Overcoming all the controversy and security worries, the R-rated comic book film opened bigger than Warner Bros. anticipated. Hollywood hates taking risks of any kind, but this is one that paid off very well for the studio.

The filmmakers and studio behind “Joker” have reason to put on a happy face. Despite concerns over its violent themes and ramped up theater security, audiences flocked to the multiplex to check out the R-rated film this weekend resulting in a record October opening.

Warner Bros. said Sunday that “Joker” grossed $96.2 million in ticket sales from 4,374 screens in North America. The previous October record-holder was the Spider-Man spinoff “Venom” which opened to $80 million last year. Internationally, “Joker” earned $152.2 million from 73 markets, resulting in a stunning $234 million global debut.

“This was a much larger result at the box office than we had ever anticipated globally,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.′ president of domestic distribution. “Putting records aside, we’re just thrilled that audiences are embracing the movie as strong as they are.”

Since debuting at the Venice Film Festival where it won the prestigious Golden Lion last month, “Joker” has been both praised and criticized for its dark spin on the classic Batman villain played by Joaquin Phoenix. The film from director and co-writer Todd Phillips was always seen as a bit of a gamble with one of the studios’ most valuable pieces of intellectual property, hence its modest-for-a-comic-book-film $55 million budget.

“Joker” has inspired waves of headlines over apprehensions that its depiction of a mentally ill assassin could incite violence, prompting movie theaters across the country to take extra security precautions. New York and Los Angeles police increased their presence around multiplexes, and exhibition owners outlawed costumes and face masks in some venues. The industry started to make some of these moves following the 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. that took place during a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” and left 12 people dead and 70 injured. Members of families affected by the Aurora shooting had spoken against “Joker.” Relatives and friends of those killed in that shooting sent a letter to Warner Bros. expressing their concern over the film.

“When we learned that Warner Bros. was releasing a movie called ‘Joker’ that presents the character as a protagonist with a sympathetic origin story, it gave us pause,” the letter said.

In its own statement, Warner Bros. wrote that “it is not the intention of the film, the filmmakers or the studio to hold this character up as a hero.”

Jeff Goldstein, Warner’s president of domestic distribution, told Variety the studio’s marketing emphasized the fact that “Joker” is a dark R-rated drama.

“People knew what the movie was and the noise in the background did not slow it down,” he said. “It’s a thought-provoking film. We are enormously proud of Todd Phillips and the whole marketing team.”

But in the weeks leading up to its release, hype and uneasiness intensified beyond how audiences would react to placing this character in a realistic and unambiguously adult setting with “Taxi Driver” undertones. Responding to anxiety that the film might have the potential to inspire violence, multiple theater chains banned costumes or reaffirmed earlier policies regarding masks and authorities in numerous cities said they were stepping police patrols around theaters.

In the lead-up to the release of “Joker,” the F.B.I. warned of online threats, adding to fears that screenings of the movie might be targeted with violence. That prompted the police in cities including New York and Los Angeles to step up theater security.

While some worried this would impact the box office, it did not ultimately detract audiences from turning out opening weekend; the box office surpassed industry expectations and may rise even higher when weekend actuals are reported Monday. Although the film got a B+ CinemaScore from opening night audiences, the studio is optimistic about its long-term playability.

The movie opened without incident, though signs of audiences’ anxiety were apparent. According to media outlets, a number of moviegoers left a screening in midtown Manhattan on Friday night after a man cheered and applauded on-screen murders. Consuming what appeared to be alcohol, he reportedly spat on patrons as they left the theater.

“All the nervousness built around the film” made the experience particularly unsettling, one moviegoer, Etai Benson, wrote in an online exchange with the news agency.

Warner Bros. made a bet that audiences would respond to an edgy, artsy, boundary-pushing movie — and this weekend proved them right.

While opening sales for “Joker” were not as high as they were for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($166 million in 2016) or “The Dark Knight Rises” (about $161 million in 2012), Gross, the movie consultant, noted in his report that character spinoffs typically make less money than the original movies. “Joker” was able to perform roughly in line with other spinoffs relative to their main series counterpart. “The Batman franchise, including this spinoff, is playing at an extremely high level,” Gross added.

Reinforcing that success is the fact that “Joker” cost $55 million to make, a modest amount for a major production. “The Dark Knight Rises,” by comparison, cost a reported $250 million to bring to life.

“Sixty-six percent of the audience was under the age of 35,” Goldstein said. “That tells you that the audience will expand out with that younger group as time goes on.” The younger audience also gave the film a more favorable A- CinemaScore.

Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for box office tracker Comscore, said that the convergence of critical acclaim and controversy actually helped the film become bigger than expected at the box office.

“It’s the ultimate water-cooler movie right now,” Dergarabedian said. “Not only did ‘Joker’ over-perform in North America, but also internationally where the acclaim, buzz and controversy surrounding the film resonated strongly with moviegoers who put the film at the top of their cinematic priority list,” he said. “Movies that become part of the general conversation due to their controversial nature are often those that transcend their status as a movie to become a cultural event and this is exactly what happened with ‘Joker.’”

He added that it was important that “Joker” was always marketed as a “very dark, R-rated film.”

“It always had an element of mystery and danger surrounding it,” Dergarabedian said. “If it were a G-rated film, controversy like this would not be a good thing.”

In the landscape of R-rated comic book films, “Joker” is nestled between “Deadpool” and its sequel, both of which opened over $125 million, and “Logan,” which launched with $88.4 million.

“Joker” was the only new wide release this weekend, which is down from last year when both “Venom” and “A Star is Born” opened. Holdovers populated the top 10: The more family friendly “Abominable” landed in second place with $12 million in its second weekend and “Downton Abbey” took third in its third weekend with $8 million at 3,548 theaters lifting its North American box office sales to $73 million.

With awards buzz behind it, the Judy Garland biopic “Judy,” starring Renee Zellweger, added nearly 1,000 screens this weekend and placed seventh with $4.6 million from 1,458 locations.

Lionsgate and Millennium’s “Rambo: Last Blood” declined 59% in its third weekend, landing at No. 8 with $3.6 million. After three weeks in theaters, the fifth film in Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo universe has made nearly $40 million.

Specialty openings saw Sony Classics’ platform launch of “Pain and Glory” scoring impressively with $160,087 at four locations. The Pedro Almodovar drama opened at the Cannes Film Festival, where Antonio Banderas earned a best actor award for his portrayal of a film director in his decline. “Pain and Glory” is Spain’s entry for best international feature at the Academy Awards.

Fox Searchlight’s launch of Natalie Portman’s astronaut drama “Lucy in the Sky” showed little traction in limited release, picking up just $55,000 from 37 theaters across Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. “Lucy” opened at the Toronto International Film Festival and has unimpressed by critics, resulting in a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Overall domestic business for 2019 has hit $8.64 billion as of Saturday, down 5% from the same date last year. The gap has narrowed considerably from early July, when the figure was 9.1%, according to Comscore.
