Blackhawks Take Stanley Cup Finals Game 1: Betting Odds Shorter

chicago blackhawks beat tampa bay lightning stanley cup finals 2015

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Tampa Bay Lightning opened the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday night from Florida. Following a defensive battle, the Blackhawks took game one and in doing so they claimed home ice advantage in the NHL’s championship series.

A low-scoring affair, the Blackhawks’ offense appeared to arrive late for game one. Through the opening two periods, Chicago managed just 13 shots on net as the Lightning nursed a 1-0 lead on an early goal from Alex Killorn. However the ‘hawks snapped a couple wrist shots by Ben Bishop at 13:28 and 15:26 of the third, goals that were scored by Teuvo Teravainen and Antoine Vermette.

Tampa Bay, with only five shots in the entire third period, failed to mount an effective offense of their own. What resulted was a 2-1 steal-of-a-win for Chicago, a team that’s looking more and more like the forthcoming Stanley Cup champions.

Tampa Bay, if they are to recover, will have to wait until Saturday night before they get back on the ice. Game two will not be played until this weekend and that could make the bad loss harder for the Lightning to put in the past.

With the road-win to open the series, Chicago have to be feeling great knowing they now have home-ice advantage. The ‘hawks also have to be feeling good with the comeback win as they did not receive any offense from their most talented skaters. Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, and Duncan Keith were all blanked for goals in game although the latter did tally an assist.

Betting odds on Chicago are shortening drastically following the win to open the series. Earlier this week, the ‘hawks were priced as long at -125 (ie. BetVictor), betting odds that I recommended taking. Now, following game one, the various sportsbooks are generally updating odds in the futures market for the Stanley Cup at about -300 on the ‘hawks straight-up (ie. Stan James and PaddyPower).

In my view, Tampa Bay would overachieve if they simply made it to game six in the Stanley Cup Finals. But a Chicago sweep is still priced at +1000 with Coral while the same firm has a +550 price on a 4-1 Chicago result.

Game two will be played on Saturday night with a start time of 7:15pm ET. That game could be called a near-do-or-die situation for Tampa Bay as so few teams win a series after losing games one and two in their own rink.

Creflo Dollar’s Jet & Chet Haze’s Nigga Freedom: Celebrity Gossip Roundup

Preacher Creflo Dollar Talks Board into Purchasing $65 Million Jet

This is what I am talking about and another reason why I don’t really fool with church folk, especially preachers, anymore. We reported a few months back that mega church leader Creflo Dollar solicited the support of his followers, and any one else that is crazy enough to feed into his madness, so that he could purchase a $65 million G650 aircraft in order for him to “continue the work of God.”

Of course this is ridiculous and received all kinds of shade from non believers and lay people alike because, really, as a man of God who is supposed to be about supporting and helping the people of God, asking for a $65 million plane is beyond negligent, it is an abuse of power.

creflo dollar gets gulfstream jet for god work 2015 gossip

Well, it looks like he was able to talk his “board” at World Changers Church International into getting the damn plane. And they had this to say about their reasoning behind giving in to the audacious request:

“It is our belief that this ministry is called to serve people globally — to literally change the world according to the Great Commission — and our infrastructure and operational plan reflect the worldwide nature of that assignment…“Our pastors share the gospel of Jesus more than 300 times per year — in churches, arenas, venues, convention centers, stadiums and other facilities across the entire planet — and are committed to aggressive travel schedules that cannot be fulfilled via any means other than private aircraft.”

There are literally no words. I mean, I am utterly speechless. Now I am no bible scholar but this kind of conduct by big time church leaders is just a magnification of what happens in smaller congregations. I could go into how the Bible says that there will come a time when men will turn their hearts from sound teaching and listen to what their etching ears want to hear or that people like Creflo Dollar really don’t serve God but their own appetites, and through smoothing talk and flattery, they fool and deceive naïve people and even “the elect.” but again, I am no bible scholar.

This is just sickening.

chet haze defends right for nigger word in music 2015

Rapper Chet Haze Exercises His “Free Speech Right” to Use Nigga in his Lyrics

For those that don’t know, Tom Hanks has a son and his son is a rapper and that rapper uses the word nigga… a lot.

Chet Haze has been justifying his right to use the “nigga” via his social media accounts and in his music and does not plan to back down.

“If I say the word nigga I say it amongst people I love and who love me. If I say “fuck yall hatin ass niggaz” it’s because that’s really how I felt at the time. And I don’t accept society getting to decide what ANYBODY can or can’t say. That’s something we call FREE SPEECH.”

He goes on to explain that he is very clear on the time in which we live but even so, we are still far more advanced and don’t live in the “Jim Crow era” thus the word nigga doesn’t have to have a negative connation “if we so choose.”

chet haze free speech fight for nigga 2015 gossip

Long-time friend and collaborator Scrilla King, who’s performed with Chet has told the media that he has ended their six year friendship because of Hanks use of the word.

Scrilla says Chet’s black friends are very uncomfortable when Chet uses the word saying, “It’s disrespectful. He thinks it’s a joke.”

He adds that Chet, “He wakes up thinking he can be black today and know what we go through. He doesn’t. I wake up black every day, he does not.”

Scrilla thinks Chet owes the black community a public apology.

I am honestly torn on this one. As a black woman, I use the word nigga freely… but I’m black. And while I totally get were Chet Haze is coming from, there are people in the black community who just will not accept anyone but black folks calling them “the n-word.”

This world is filled with so many mysteries. Like it baffles me how all the evidence in the world can shows (pretty much) that a mother killed her child but yet the bitch gets acquitted.

Speaking of child killers (low blow I know) Casey Anthony is set to possibly have a sit down interview with the Today Show’s Matt Lauer. Of course we all remember how her case went and how she got off back in 2011 and now she stands to get some major dough to talk about how she “didn’t do it.”

Juventus Becomes Italian Serie A Champions 2014-2015 Season

juventus serie a champions 2015

The Old Lady were crowned the kings of Italy after their last Serie A league game against Verona on Saturday. It is their fourth consecutive title win, only a few years after getting promotion from Serie B.

It wasn’t long ago when Juve were playing in the Serie B after suffering relegation because of the 2006 Italian football scandal. During that period the Milan sides were dominant in both Italy and Europe. Since then a lot has changed in the Italian top division. AC Milan barely made it in to the top half of the table after beating Palermo to the tenth position. Inter Milan, on the other hand, finished eighth on the table and 2015/16 season will be the first time when both the Milan giants won’t feature in a European competition.

The AC Milan boss was convinced that his men are now behaving as a team. Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia: “We woke up late, but the club can see this team has an identity now.”

“It’s a shame we woke up a bit late, but this is where we need to begin again from. The club can see that this team plays good football and has an identity now,” SuperPippo added.

“I knew the players would react, we were truly a team in these last four or five games. Now there are strong foundations and with a few new faces Milan will get back to where it was.

“I have a contract. If people believe in me, then we go forward, if not then the club will evaluate the situation.

“I am relaxed and happy, I was pleased to have the whole squad behind me, which is not easy for someone making his Serie A debut as a Coach.

“It is truly emotional to see the response from the people. If you give your all, then you clearly enter into people’s hearts. I like this profession and will continue along my path.”

Ancelotti was tipped to replace Inzaghi at the helm at Milan, but the Italian gracefully declined the offer and claimed that he needed a break.

AS Roma have retained their position in the Champions League after securing the runners-up spot in the league. Although, the gap between them and Juve was a massive 17 points. Lazio could’ve ensured the second spot on the table but they lost to Roma on the penultimate match day. However they have now qualified for the play-off round to reach the Champions League.

Fiorentina and Napoli have booked their berths for the Europa League next season. Rafael Benitez is set to replace Carlo Ancelotti and will move on from the Naples based side. Benitez has a good record in La Liga as he won the league twice with Valencia more than a decade ago. The Spaniard also won the Champions League in the year 2005 with Liverpool, where they miraculously defeated Milan after going 3 – 0 down in the first half. Many are skeptical about the decision made by Real Madrid hierarchy but it won’t be a big surprise if he proves his critics wrong.

The seventh place Samdoria have qualified for the play-off round for the Europa league as Genoa couldn’t get a UEFA license and their appeal was denied, disallowing them an opportunity to compete in the competition despite finishing sixth on the table.

The relegation spots were filled by Cagliari, Cesena and Parma. Atalanta managed to stay clear of demotion. Carpi and Frosinone have achieved promotion from the Serie B, while the third promotion spot will be decided in the coming weeks.

Rafael Nadal Ranking Implications After French Open Loss

rafael nadal defeated by novak djokovic french open 2015

Rafael Nadal, the nine-time champion at Roland Garros, is out of the 2015 French Open. The Spaniard lost on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round to tournament favorite and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 loss, which came in the context of declined play on Nadal’s part over the last several months, will send Nadal down the rankings a little bit – maybe even out of the Top 10 on the ATP World Tour.

Nadal, as he so often has been at Roland Garros, was the defending champion at this year’s clay court Grand Slam. That meant that entering the tournament he had 2000 ranking points to defend, an amount that would require winning the event again.

However in going out in the tournament’s quarterfinals, Nadal only defended a fraction of the 2000 points he earned last season. With quarterfinalists only receiving 360 ranking points, Nadal will lose 1640 of them on Monday. While he will probably be the World No. 10, there is a scenario where Nadal could fall out of the Top 10 next week.

novak djokovic beats rafael nadal ranking implications french open 2015

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a player who was ranked 14th in the world entering the 2015 French Open, remains alive in the tournament’s semifinals. Should Tsonga defeat Stan Wawrinka then the Frenchman would move into the Top 10 once again and Nadal would slide down to 11th.

However Tsonga is considered an underdog in the semis so perhaps Nadal’s current and lengthy stay in the Top 10 is not over. Furthermore, Nadal probably won’t dip down much further in the rankings in the months ahead, in fact the former World No. 1 may even inch up a bit.

The Spaniard did not do all that well at Wimbledon last season, he didn’t do anything in Halle, and he no-showed the North American summertime Masters events in 2014. Furthermore Nadal missed the 2014 US Open, meaning that any ranking points he gets at this year’s event in Flushing Meadows will be a pure net gain. For certain, there’s plenty of ranking points for Nadal to pick up in the next few months – even if he doesn’t play his best.

[pdf-embedder url=”http://movietvtechgeeks.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/2015-french-open-roland-garros-draw-schedule-semi-finals.pdf”]

However, at the moment, there is little for Nadal’s contingent to feel happy about. The clay court season had always been the Spaniard’s bread-and-butter, even in years when he did not play well on other surfaces. But 2015 is much different and Rafa looks as though he could be on the bubble to make the year-end 2015 ATP World Tour Finals. For sure, he does not appear to be a favorite for any of the Grand Slams still to be played this season.

The 2015 French Open, with both Nadal and Roger Federer out, will finally see a new clay court champion. Besides Djokovic, Wawrinka, and Tsonga, Andy Murray also remains alive at Roland Garros. Djokovic, a player looking to complete the career Grand Slam, is the clear favorite and the anticipated final is expected to be between the Serb and Wawrinka.

Read With Me If You Want To Live…Killer Robot Weapons Debate Late

read with me if you want to live darpa robot 2015

Should We Be Using Robots as Weapons?

Is it ethical to use robots, otherwise known as Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) as weapons of war? Should we even use robots at all to kill human enemies or wanted targets? Robots may be accurate, powerful, expendable and intelligent but they lack compassion and wisdom. They act on parameters given to them that constitute their artificial intelligence but what if those parameters are not enough compared to the complexity of the human brain; for example, that gut instinct to shoot or to spare a child combatant or mortally wounded target? It’s all been laid out in the world of science fiction. There are many things that could go wrong. Movies like I Robot, Stealth, Robocop, The Avengers 2 and especially the Terminator franchise discuss how overlooked parameters and hardware errors can turn robots endowed with artificial intelligence against their masters. But humans are smart enough to build fail safes and kill switches (if they can be used in time). The real question is whether it’s moral or ethical to use LAWS during military operations?

In times of war, there are certain criteria that must be followed. Like the three laws in I Robot, these criteria indicated in the 1949 Geneva Convention must be followed in the field of battle. Attacks must be carried out, out of necessity, warriors must be able to distinguish between combatants and non-combatants and whether the value of the objective is higher than the collateral damage. Seems easy enough but the additional 1977 Martens Clause also states that weapons used must satisfy the ‘principles of humanity and the dictates of public conscience.’ LAWS might be able to satisfy the first three but the fourth is highly subjective. Within those principles lie compassion and political correctness, something current AI technology will be pressed to emulate. Even so, many people are hard-pressed to accept allowing machines to decide who gets to live or die even in times of war.

The Law of Conservation of Man

In movies that tackle robotic soldiers, most recently Iron Man 2 and even Iron Man 3, robots can be deployed in battle instead of humans ‘in order to save lives’. It’s also the argument used when the atomic bombs were used in Japan so instead of prolonging the war killing millions more using conventional warfare, let’s give them a good scare. It worked before and it could work again. Instead of using nuclear weapons, we’ll be using robots. Iron Man 2 was a good example. It featured replacing actual soldiers with drones for all branches of the military and those drones had limited AI. Give them a target and they can attack, pursue and work around obstacles and crowds. So instead of enlisting American citizens for military duty, the US can just manufacture its soldiers and simply upload their training. Apart from saving lives, the US can save money in the long run on food, medicine, training and veterans’ paychecks. Financial efficiency is still the bottom line but ‘saving lives of enlisted personnel’ gets the citizenry every time.

This is now partially true of drone-using countries. Drones are basically flying robots used for patrol or search-and-destroy missions. These drones have limited AI for navigation, flight correction and targeting but they can still need to be activated, flown and guided by an operator. If the drone hits a civilian-populated area in search of its target, the operator is liable to sanctions and the erring country will later have to answer for the loss of innocent lives. But if the drone is successful, that single unit has saved the lives of a platoon or squad of soldiers if the operation had been conventional. In Iron Man 3, one could say that if ordinary soldiers were sent against the Extremis-powered enemies to save the president, the soldiers could have been wiped out. Thank JARVIS.

The Erring Human Element

Which brings us why LAWS are in the works. Human operators can make mistakes. Human operators can disobey or hesitate and jeopardize an operation. A wrong press of a button can send a drone crashing or shooting at the wrong targets. But LAWS with a good AI will not disobey orders, will not hesitate and theoretically cannot make mistakes. They will perform as ordered and will not stop until the mission is complete, cancelled or the unit is destroyed; and the probability is high that they won’t miss.

The Wisdom of Building First and Building Better

In the movie The Core, Project DESTINI which has the ability to induce targeted earthquakes accidentally stopped the earth’s core from rotating. Why was such a machine built? The primary argument was that there were other countries that might build a similar device. It’s the same concept with LAWS. Though morally questionable, research and development continues because if we thought of building it, other countries are thinking about it as well. It’s more prudent to be the first and t has to be better than the rest.

Advanced robotics technology is already available. Bipedal robots are already available like Honda’s Asimov program. There are already kits available to make mini androgynous robots that can dance, ride bicycles and participate in robot wrestling battles. Drone technology is now widely available and on the cheap. With proper AI and weapons, these kits can easily become tools of war.

That’s the reason why the US and Great Britain are pursuing the development of LAWS. With the technology we have today, states like Iran, North Korea, China and Russia may already have their prototypes. It’s a matter of national security that the US should be first and better.

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) already has programs similar to LAWS. Fast Lightweight Autonomy (FLA) and Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE). Both projects involved aerial drones that are able to move into enemy territory and perform the necessary steps of a strike mission. These will be able to act independently in case signals get jammed.

killer robots campaign 2015 images

Is Artificial Intelligence Intelligent Enough?

There are no details on how well CODE and FLA are able to perform strike missions. Weapons, no problem but s their AI sufficient? In Iron Man 2, one of the drones after Iron Man showed that the AI had trouble differentiating a child in costume from the real thing. In Iron Man 3, even JARVIS couldn’t differentiate between Pepper Potts and the other Extremis powered enemies. It’s because the AI were given very specific instructions. How far have we gone in the studies of artificial intelligence? Can we give LAWS enough smarts to follow the Geneva Convention during battle so that if an opponent throws away his/her weapons, the opponent will be spared and an arrest protocol kicks in?

And what if we have gone too far in the studies of artificial intelligence and we do end up with something like Hal, VIKI, Virus, Ultron and Skynet? The way things are right now, VIKI, Virus and Skynet has a point.

Overkill

Speaking of going too far, if those drones in Iron Man 2 were to be deployed in Afghanistan against guerillas that don’t have full battle gear. The enemy would be so unmatched as to be practically defenseless. Isn’t killing a defenseless opponent tantamount to murder? If we were to get more real, if an autonomous flying drone were to attack the same target using machineguns meant for other aircraft and able to hit a target a thousand feet away, wouldn’t that practically be murder? Using drones in targeting terror targets in populated areas is already considered overkill.

Laws on LAWS

So if DARPA’s CODE is able to perform unguided strike missions, is killing included? If so, it seems that giving machines the power to decide who lives and who dies is somewhat irresponsible. At least when guided, the robot acts as the weapon and the operating soldier decides who and when to kill, but independently, a line of code determines life and death; it’s a very cheap way for the opponent to die. Like it or not, LAWS are already being researched and being made. New provisions to the articles of war should be made immediately to cover the use of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems. Germany and Japan have already expressed their distaste of removing humans from the equation, that sending overpowered LAWS against ordinary opponents is murder. But like bomb disposal robots, LAWS can or should be used just to disable or incapacitate opponents in order for a team of real soldiers to move in. Giving them too much or inadequate intelligence and the ability to kill is just asking for trouble.

Hoping to Fix Offensive Shortcomings, Chicago Bulls Hire ISU Fred Hoiberg as Head Coach

0

chicago bulls hire fred hoiberg as head coach 2015 nba

Just four days after parting ways with Tom Thibodeau, the Chicago Bulls penned Fred Hoiberg as their new head coach. Hoiberg, who played for the Bulls from 1999-2003, coached the Iowa State Cyclones to a 115-56 record along with two Big 12 Championships in his time there, winning Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012.

Clearly Hoiberg knows what he’s doing, and with the announcement coming only four days after Thibodeau’s release, it begs the question, how long were the Bulls planning this hire?

The news that Thibodeau would not be returning to Chicago for the 2015-2016 NBA season didn’t catch anyone off guard. The public was made award of Coach Thib’s problems with the Bulls front office at the beginning of the team’s playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round. Maybe the Bulls have had Hoiberg lined up as their next head coach since early May…at least that would explain the unusually short turnaround.

Either way, Hoiberg—known as “The Mayor” dating back to his playing days—is the next up in a line of fantastic coaches including Doug Collins and, of course, Phil Jackson. He’ll certainly have his work cut out for him.

There was a very mixed reaction among Bulls fans over the firing of Thibodeau, so Hoiberg will need to earn respect in the city. One way he can do so is by fixing the Bulls offense which dropped down to 11th overall this past season. Obviously, Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah’s injuries played a big part in the decline; however, the overbearing reliance on the three-point shot, especially by Rose and Kirk Hinrich, has also contributed to the fall.

Hoiberg ran a very up-tempo offense in Iowa, and bringing that style to the Bulls could definitely help them turn things around on the offensive end.

The Bulls have arguably their best shot at a NBA Championship since Rose’s original injury coming up in 2016, and Hoiberg will be a big part of whether or not they make it that far.

Hopefully he has some new knees for Derrick Rose, too, because that’s really the Bulls’ missing piece in the championship puzzle.

2015 French Open Betting Odds Post Federer & Nishikori

french open betting odds ferrer murray nadal djokovic 2015

The 2015 French Open did not see any of the top favorites eliminated in the early rounds this season. However things changed on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round as both Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori exited the tournament. Those results have lead to a bit of a shake up in the betting market, one that has catapulted Stan Wawrinka up to third favorite.

Before we look at the updated odds, let’s first take a look at what the odds were not long ago. Drawing on an article I wrote that was published on May 25th, here’s what the betting odds for the 2015 French Open looked like at that point:

1. Novak Djokovic (-120 bet365) 5/6
2. Rafael Nadal (+500 Stan James) 5/1
3. Andy Murray (+1000 Boylesports) 10/1
4. Roger Federer (+1000 Stan James) 10/1
5. Kei Nishikori (+1200 Stan James) 12/1
6. Stan Wawrinka (+2500 Stan James) 25/1
7. Tomas Berdych (+2500 bet365) 22/1
8. Gael Monfils (+4000 bet365) 40/1

Read more at http://movietvtechgeeks.com/latest-2015-french-open-betting-odds-mens-singles/#8KvDEWRRyiBDGDZP.99

Here’s an updated look at the odds now that only six players remain in the tournament:

1. Novak Djokovic (-125 bet365) 4/5
2. Rafael Nadal (+400 Bwin) 4/1
3. Stan Wawrinka (+600 WilliamHill) 6/1
4. Andy Murray (+1000 Boylesports) 10/1
5. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (+1600 SportingBet) 16/1
6. David Ferrer (+4000 betway) 40/1

Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, and Ferrer are still in the quarterfinal round. That round will see Djokovic face Nadal in a much anticipated match-up while Murray will face Ferrer in the other quarterfinal yet to be decided. On the opposite side of the draw Wawrinka will face Tsonga in the semifinals, with both players having won one Grand Slam semifinal in their respective careers.

Looking at the odds, not much has changed for Djokovic, Nadal, or Murray as they are still in one another’s way just to make the final. However Wawrinka is now priced at odds to win the French that he has never been priced at before – for any season. The 2015 French Open truly represents a career opportunity for the Swiss No. 2 and he’s fortunate to have a winnable match in the semis.

Betting odds for that upcoming semi, between Wawrinka and Tsonga, make the former the favorite. But the Swiss, currently priced at -225 with bet365 straight-up, does NOT have an edge over Tsonga on head-to-heads. In fact the two players are even at 3-3 heads up and Wawrinka’s status as favorite is likely due to longer-termed form more than anything else.

Wawrinka, unlike Tsonga, has been playing excellent tennis for several months. He went deep in Rome in May, he won Rotterdam outright in February, he made the semifinals in Melbourne, and Wawrinka won Chennai. All totaled, entering the French Open Wawrinka was 22-8 and he has improved that record to 27-8 with the five match-wins he’s earned already at Roland Garros. It’s this consisent play over several months that has likely garnered Wawrinka support in what otherwise appears to be a semifinal coin toss.

Tsonga, priced at +190 with Boylesports to beat Wawrinka, entered the 2015 French Open off of the radar. Prior to Roland Garros, he was just 6-5 on the year with losses to David Goffin, Tomas Berdych, Marcel Granollers, Marin Cilic, and Gael Monfils. The Frenchman, following several months of below standard play, remained off the radar through the opening rounds of the French because he did not have a difficult draw to prove himself with.

But, in hindsight, Tsonga probably should have caught more people’s attention after dispatching Christian Lindell, Dudi Sela, and Pablo Andujar because he took them each out in straight sets. Those lopsided wins, even against weaker players, hinted that the Frenchman was more of a threat to Berdych and Nishikori than what many tennis fans realized.

When assessing Tsonga and his odds the wins over Berdych and Nishikori should definitely be given more weight than longer-termed results. Players dip and peak quite often on tour and Tsonga appears to be at the top of his game, even following a lengthy period of mediocrity. Accordingly, the Tsonga and Wawrinka match appears to be more of a coin-toss situation than the “favorite vs. underdog” situation that the odds suggest. Due to the lengthy odds on Tsonga, it’s his odds that value bettors should be taking.

On Djokovic’s side of the draw, things are a lot more complicated. Nadal remains a difficult player to read as he has not played well this season. Although he is into the quarters relatively fresh Nadal’s wins over Jack Sock, Andrey Kuznetsov, and one Quentin Halys do not prove much. Where the Spaniard is at right now is difficult to assess but he’s probably a bigger longshot against Djokovic than what his odds of +225 with bet365 to beat the Serb straight up suggests.

The two quarterfinal matches remaining will be played on Wednesday. The French Open semifinals will then be played on Friday and the final will be played on Sunday. This year appears to be Djokovic’s opportunity to complete his career Grand Slam however, priced at -125, his betting value isn’t clear. The best play is probably to take a poke at Tsonga’s odds to beat Wawrinka straight up in their upcoming semifinal.

Aaron Hernandez Retrial Due To Jury Corruption?

aaron hernandez seeks new trial 2015 jury issues

As we told you long ago, Aaron Hernandez’s saga was far from over, and now his attorneys are looking to get the former New England Patriots former football star back to square one by overturning his murder conviction due to possible jury corruption. They are looking to have Hernandez get a new trial because they feel that one of the jurors might have considered evidence against him that wasn’t introduced at trial.

That’s one area that gets very muddled and confusing, especially when information is snuck in by a lawyer and the judge tells the jury to disregard that. I’ve always wondered how a jury can just simply ‘forget’ something that might have been pretty big.

His attorneys, have filed four motions asking that their client’s verdict be overturned because of this matter. In plain terms, they say that a jury found out something he or she shouldn’t have and used that in determining his guilt. With as much coverage as the arrest, indictment and trial had, it wouldn’t be too hard for something like that to happen. The documents have been sealed from the public, so it’s unclear what the juror was exposed too.

During the trial, Judge Garsh did rule to withhold certain evidence or testimony from the trail like the fact that Hernandez hadn’t been charged for a separate double-homicide or that one of the prosecutor’s witnesses alleged the football player shot him in the face to silence him. This evidence had been deemed too prejudicial against Hernandez.

Besides being convicted of the June 2013 killing of Lloyd, Hernandez is also facing double murder charges in connection with a drive-by shooting outside a downtown Boston nightclub in the summer of 2012.

aaron hernendez retrial for jury corruption 2015

Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado both died in a hail of bullets as they waited at a stop light and a trigger-man opened fire from a vehicle that pulled up alongside them. Police have since speculated Hernandez shot the victims because one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him inside the club and failed to apologize.

With a ruling in their favor, Hernandez’s attorneys may be granted the right to question one or more of the jurors about potential developments.

During the trial, the jury was never sequestered making it more than reasonably possible that one of them may have been exposed to other information or allegations lodged against Hernandez.

The 25-year-old Hernandez has also been accused of shooting another man, Alexander Bradley, in the face in the heat of an argument, resulting in the man losing sight in his right eye.

Federer & Kei Nishikori Out, Nadal & Djokovic Next: 2015 French Open

roger federer vs stan wawrinka 2015 french open

The matches are complete in the men’s and women’s singles draws from Day 10 at Roland Garros. The matches on the women’s side went pretty much according to expectation while the matches on the men’s side saw two lower-seeds advance.

In the women’s draw Lucie Safarova has made back into the semifinals of a Grand Slam. The Czech player made the Wimbledon semifinals last season before losing to eventual champion Petra Kvitova. Safarova, who defeated Maria Sharapova earlier in the tournament, took out Garbine Muguruza in the quarters on Day 10, a match that ended in straight sets at 7-6, 6-3.

Safarova will now face former champion Ana Ivanovic, a player who defeated Elina Svitolina on Tuesday. Since winning the entire tournament in 2008 Ivanovic had not made the semifinals of any Grand Slam tournament before the currently running Roland Garros event. The Serb promises to be in tough in the semifinals against Safarova, a player who has a 5-3 winning record against Ivanovic. However between the two, Ivanovic is the only one who has won a Grand Slam semifinal match.

Who the finalist will be on Ivanovic’s side of the draw may prove academic in the days ahead. World No. 1 Serena Williams is still alive in the tournament and there is no one left in the draw that is likely to stop her. Williams will next face Sara Errani, a player that the American is 8-0 against. Surviving that match, Williams will face an inexperienced player in either Timea Bacsinszky or Alison Van Uytvanck. Against Safarova and Ivanovic combined, Williams is 16-1 and therefore it’s not surprising to see the American priced as short as -175 to win the 2015 French Open despite having not won her quarterfinal match yet.

roger federer loses to stan wawrinka

On the men’s side, there were a couple of upsets on Day 10. Firstly, Roger Federer is out of Roland Garros having suffered a defeat to countryman Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss No. 2, in making the semifinals, is now enjoying his best result from the French Open. But, in order to make the final, Wawrinka will still need to survive the last remaining French player in the 2015 Roland Garros draw.

jo wilfried tsonga beats kei nishikori 2015 french open

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the fourteenth seed at this year’s Roland Garros tournament, took out Kei Nishikori on Tuesday in an epic five-setter. Tsonga, after jumping out to a two sets to love lead, appeared as though he might lose his quarterfinal match as Japan’s top player battled back in the third and fourth sets. However the Frenchman re-stabilized himself in the fifth set to earn his spot in the semifinals. In doing so, Tsonga has re-established himself as one of the best players on tour after fading a bit during the 2014 season.

Wawrinka and Tsonga remain the survivors on what was – and remains – the very weak half of the draw in Paris. The two players combined have just one Grand Slam title between them, that belonging to the Swiss. Conversely the top half of the draw still features Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray. Those three players combine for 24 Grand Slam titles and they will likely combine for 25 by the end of the French Open.

Djokovic remains the favorite in the tournament however he has Nadal to deal with in the immediate future. Djokovic and Nadal are set to meet in the second match of the day on Wednesday on Philippe-Chatrier Court. The match, regardless of the outcome, is noteworthy in that it pits the top two favorites to win the tournament outright against one another in a quarterfinal. Djokovic, following a strong start to his season, is considered the favorite to win, priced at -275 with bet365 for example.

Murray can never be counted out however the quarterfinal between Nadal and Djokovic is the “final before the final.” If Djokovic wins then he can be fully expected to go on and claim the 2015 French Open, thereby completing his career Slam. If Nadal, despite playing below his standard for the much of the last year, should defeat Djokovic then it can be taken to mean that the Spaniard is at his best. He could then be expected to win the 2015 French Open, even if he has to go through both Murray and Wawrinka to do it.

The men’s and women’s finals from Paris will be played this weekend. At present, the women’s championship appears to be Serena Williams’ to lose while there is a lot to play for on the men’s side as Djokovic, the favorite, does not have a smooth path to the final.

Edmonton Oilers Should Trade Top Pick: 2015 NHL Draft

Connor McDavid top pick for edmonton oilers 2015 nhl draft

The 2015 NHL Draft, a two-day event, is scheduled for late this month from Sunrise, Florida, a city in the metro Miami area. The Edmonton Oilers hold first pick and it is considered a foregone conclusion that they will use that pick to select Connor McDavid. Suggesting anything otherwise may be considered tantamount to idiocy by many however I’m of the opinion that Edmonton should trade their right to select first for several proven players at the NHL level. Conversely, should the Oilers draft McDavid as expected then I think they should trade him for a cast of other proven talents.

Why should Edmonton do this? One simple proverb explains my opinion: you shouldn’t put all of your eggs in one basket.

McDavid is considered a generational talent, a player that comes along only once every ten to twenty years. He’s already been compared to Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky following an incredibly impressive junior career with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League.

However before Edmonton select McDavid, I think they should review some very relevant history: namely I think Edmonton should look back at the 1991 NHL Draft and the events that followed.

For those too young to remember, in 1991 Eric Lindros was considered a major talent. Looking back, he was not a so-called “generational talent” as Jaromir Jagr was selected in the 1990 draft, a player who ended up proving more on the ice than Lindross did. But therein lays part of the point that I want to make: there was ample hype surrounding Lindros and yet things did not go as well for the team that got him as they did for the team that traded him.

It’s this point that I think the Edmonton Oilers should consider.

Lindros was drafted first overall by the Quebec Nordiques, a franchise that would soon relocate to Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche. The Nordiques selected Lindros despite the fact that the English-speaking Canadian had previously announced that he would not play in Quebec City. Eventually the Nordiques traded Lindros and this is what they got in return:

Peter Forsberg
Steve Duschene
Kerry Huffman
Mike Ricci
Ron Hextall
Chris Simon
Philadelphia¡¯s first-round picks in both 1993 and 1994
$15 million in cash

Forsberg, the best player in the group mentioned above, is now in the Hall of Fame and, without looking further, the Nordiques/Avalanche won the trade just because they got the Swede. However Mike Ricci also enjoyed a respectable career which included five full seasons of play for Quebec/Colorado.

Looking further, with the 1993 draft pick Quebec took Jocelyn Thibault, a player who was a part of the trade that brought Patrick Roy to Colorado. Furthermore, the $15,000,000 that the Nordiques/Avs franchise received was useful for a lot more than just office equipment. Back in 1991, $15,000,000 could get you Wayne Gretzky for five years, Mario Lemieux for seven, or Brett Hull until he was old.

The Avs, with a nucleus that included Forsberg and Roy, won both the 1996 Stanley Cup and the 2001 Stanley Cup.

Philadelphia didn’t exactly miss out on success with Lindros as the Flyers made the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. However they also got swept in those finals and Lindros acquired a reputation as being a little bit of a pain during his time in Philly. Furthermore the Canadian had trouble with concussions during his career that ended up limited his offensive totals. In fact they hurt his career totals such that he is not currently in the Hockey Hall of Fame despite being eligible (he should already be in).

In short, the Nordiques/Avs were far better off for trading a major talent than the team that received that talent. It’s worth pointing out that they only succeeded by accident as it was Lindros’ snubbery of Quebec that caused the trade but lessons can still be learned.

Who and what can the Edmonton Oilers get by trading their rights to select Connor McDavid? Or who and what can Edmonton get if they trade McDavid after drafting him?

Without getting into hypothetical trades, my guess is that the Oilers can end up with a lineup loaded with solid players and a future hall of famer. Making that move would probably land Edmonton in a better position for success in the years ahead than putting all of their proverbial eggs in the proverbial basket does.

But at this point, suggesting that the Oilers should not draft McDavid will draw you some raised eyebrows. In fairness, things could definitely work out for the Oilers with McDavid in their lineup however I still think the best mathematical move is to load up with depth.

When you bank on just one player you risk losing all to bad knees, a bad back, or (knock-on-wood) concussions. Lindros was affected by the latter and Sidney Crosby has been too, another former No. 1 pick.

With depth, you have talented players night-in night-out, even when a key player misses time. The Oilers should pursue this scenario while letting another franchise sink or swim with the OHL standout.

Arsenal Seals Record FA Cup Victory

Arsene Wenger’s men have now become the most successful team in the history of the oldest club competition in the world after a win over Aston Villa on Saturday. With their second successive FA Cup triumph at the Wembley, Arsenal have surpassed Manchester United’s trophy haul of 11 FA Cups.

Aston Villa escaped relegation in the final weeks of the Premier League and it was expected that the Tim Sherwood’s underdogs could inflict some damage in the final. Both the teams were separated by 14 positions on the final Barclays Premier League table. There was an obvious disparity in the quality of both the squads. The North Londoners were the favorites after thrashing the Villans 3 – 0 and 4 – 0 in the league this season. Although there was still a ray hope for the Clarets and Blues’ supporters as there team had outdone Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool in the semi-final.

Aston Villa couldn’t muster a shot on target throughout the ninety minutes. The Gunners completely dominated over Villa but they couldn’t find a breakthrough until the 41st minute. Theo Walcott, who was preferred over the French striker Giroud, opened the scoring. After the break, the Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez doubled their lead and Mertesacker headed in the third. The game ended 4 – 0 in favor of the Londoners as Giroud netted the fourth, a few minutes before the final whistle. Arsenal have now become the eighth team to successfully retain the FA Cup (to be known as The Emirates FA Cup from the 2015/16 season onwards).

Arsene Wenger is now the first manager in the post-war period to win six FA Cups. When asked if his men could replicate similar performances in the Premier League the 65-year-old claimed, “I think of course we can push on.

“Why not? We have won the league in the past when we had the potential to do it and that is what we want to do again.”

The Frenchman may have had to deal with a lot of critics in the second half of his 19-year reign, but he has iterated that his hunger to steer the club to glory hasn’t diminished by any means.

“I have two more years of contract and I will sit down with my directors and see how much they believe and trust,” he added.

“My hunger is great but I want to do well.”

Wenger’s opponent at the weekend, Tim Sherwood, has expressed his desire to be active in the transfer market but before that he’d be off for a holiday to clear his head

“It’s been draining. Since I came in here, it’s been non-stop,” he said. “I haven’t had time to think really. But I’m never going to be able to switch off. There’s a lot of work to be done and what we do between now and the summer will be crucial to how we perform next season.”

Sherwood has vowed to take Aston Villa back to the heights it deserves mainly because of the fantastic supporters of the club.

He added: “As much as I feel it [hurt] for myself I feel it for other people more. When I drove in here and saw the support it was fantastic. I feel for them. It’s such a big club and they are such good people around the club, and they’ve welcomed me. I wanted to win this trophy for them. Now I need to dust myself down and make sure this is a club they want to support again – and I will do that.”

Novak Djokovic Takes On Rafael Nadal: 2015 French Open Roland Garros

novak djokoic vs rafael nadal 2015 roland garros ready

This is the match everyone has been waiting for, and it’s finally happening when Novak Djokovic steps into the ring…errr court with Rafael Nadal. It actually feels like it’s a ring since these two contenders have something major to prove at the 2015 French Open. Djokovic wants to finally add this title to his long list and Rafa wants to pick up a tenth Roland Garros trophy.

Anticipation is high for Wednesday’s game and tickets are extremely hard to come by now, but what’s most interesting is that while this feels like a finals match, it’s only the quarter-finals. The draws were interesting this year as the power trio: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nada, and Andy Murray were on one side while Roger Federer had it much easier all my himself on the other side. It didn’t turn out so easy as Federer wound up getting beaten by Stan Wawrinka, who did the same thing to Nadal at the 2015 Rome Open.

Stan Wawrinka advanced to theRoland Garros semi-finals for the first time Tuesday as he upset countryman Roger Federer 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4) in blustery conditions in Paris. Wawrinka beat Federer at a Grand Slam championship for the first time (Federer was previously 4-0 at majors). The Lausanne native is through to his fourth major semi-final; he went on to win his first Grand Slam title at the 2014Australian Open (d. Nadal). The 30-year-old Wawrinka goes on to face either home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals.

Rafael Nadal, the nine-time French Open champion, will indeed face Novak Djokovic, the world’s indisputable No. 1 player, in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

That heavyweight bout — a final of sorts before the final — is to be fought on Nadal’s 29th birthday, and Nadal, the greatest clay-court player in history, will presumably need to be at or near his very best to keep it a festive occasion.

Nadal advanced out of the fourth round on Monday with a 6-3, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Jack Sock, a young, unseeded American whose power and hustle helped turn a rout into a contest.

Nadal faltered after serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but Djokovic had fewer problems in closing out his 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Richard Gasquet, the 20th-seeded French veteran.

“Now we can talk,” Nadal said, finally addressing the Djokovic match after refusing to look ahead earlier in the tournament. “It’s probably the toughest quarterfinal in my career here at Roland Garros, without a doubt.”

It is, quite possibly, the highest-profile men’s quarterfinal of the Open era. Nadal is on the quest for “La Decima” — a 10th title in Paris. Djokovic is trying to win the only Grand Slam singles title he lacks, having been thwarted here six times by Nadal in the past decade.

novak djokovic in quarter finals against rafael nadal 2015 french open

The only recent quarterfinal with this kind of heft was the 2001 duel between the American yin and yang, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, at the United States Open. That produced one of their finest matches, won by Sampras after four tiebreakers.

But both of those superstars had already won in New York. Wednesday’s match has more at stake and could also represent the end of a remarkable era of dominance for Nadal, who is 70-1 at the French Open but has lost five matches on clay, his favorite surface, this year. That is more defeats than he had on clay from 2006 to 2010.

His downbeat season, full of out-of-character mis-hits and abrupt dips in form, explains why he is seeded only No. 6.

“It does feel different, because it’s quarterfinals,” Djokovic said. “I’m not used to playing him that early. But you know, that’s the reality, and that’s a challenge that both of us have to accept. It was always a possibility before the draw came out because he dropped in the rankings.

“Playing him here and playing him in any other tournament in the world is completely different. Conditions are very suitable to his style of the game.”

The other quarterfinal in the top half of the draw will match Andy Murray of Britain against David Ferrer of Spain. Murray, undefeated on clay this season, beat Jérémy Chardy of France, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, on Monday. Ferrer, a finalist here in 2013, defeated Marin Cilic of Croatia, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

The quarterfinals in the bottom half, to be played Tuesday, will match Kei Nishikori of Japan against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France and, in the latest all-Swiss matchup, Stan Wawrinka has beaten Roger Federer.

Federer roared past Gaël Monfils on Monday in a fourth-round match that had been halted at one set each on Sunday because of fading light. Monfils’s last two shots before the interruption were clean winners, but the night’s rest did him and his momentum no favors, even though he had been hoping to use the break to recover from an illness that he said had left him feverish on Sunday.

“I think I have a flu,” Monfils said. “Especially when you’re 100 percent, it’s never easy to beat Rog, so when you’re not 100 percent, it’s definitely impossible.”

Federer looked particularly sharp and explosive off his forehand wing and was moving convincingly as he closed out the 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. With a record 17 Grand Slam singles titles but only one French Open title, Federer was asked whether he had begun to think about what it might mean to win in Paris again at age 33.

“It would be unbelievable, no doubt,” he said. “Everything crosses your mind as you sit at breakfast, and you have, for once, a quiet moment when the kids are not right there. I mean, I don’t know. I’m realistic. I know there is a chance. At the same time, I know how hard it is.”

The top half of the draw clearly presents the rockier road, but in truth, every man remaining has serious credentials. All eight quarterfinalists have reached a Grand Slam singles final.

For now, however, nearly all eyes will be on Nadal-Djokovic, which feels like a summit meeting that has been shifted unexpectedly to base camp. Nadal leads their series by 23-20. They have not played each other in a quarterfinal since 2007 in Rome, and their last three matches at Roland Garros were in the 2012 final, the 2013 semifinals and the 2014 final — all won, with varying degrees of great difficulty, by you know whom.

“You can write what you want if it sells, but this is not the match of the year,” Nadal said. “Matches of the year are finals, decisive matches.”

Nadal makes a fair point. Winning on Wednesday is no free pass to the trophy, and if it turns into one of their ultramarathons — like their 5-hour-53-minute tussle in the 2012 Australian Open — it could definitely sap the winner’s strength for the heavy lifting to come.

“I’d be very surprised if this is not a tight match,” said Paul Annacone, who has coached Sampras and Federer. “Before the tournament started, I favored Novak, and I still do. But I still think the hardest thing in men’s tennis is to beat Rafa three out of five sets on clay.”

For now, Nadal-Djokovic in Paris is undoubtedly the matchup of the year, at least until one of the Big Four has to try to stop Djokovic from completing a calendar-year Grand Slam — if he somehow gets that far.

The pressure would seem heavier on Djokovic, who is both the favorite based on his 2015 form and the man without a title here. But he is now so accustomed to bearing that burden that it may no longer be such a burden.

“Of course, it is a different approach, mentally, when you play Nadal in quarterfinals than any other player,” he said. “There’s no doubt about that. I’m going to try to keep my routine the same and not give so much importance to the match. I don’t want to spend too much energy before getting on the court, because I know that for me it’s necessary to have every source of strength and energy possible. And I know what to do.”

The tricky thing and, from a spectator’s perspective, the delightful thing is that Nadal does, too.

“He’s got to keep the ball deep, and keep the margins good,” Annacone said. “He can’t play short too often. He’s got to use his forehand up the line to back Novak up, and just have to play like the Rafa of old. If he does that, he’s got a really good chance, and if he doesn’t, he won’t win.”
