Dylann Roof’s Father’s Day Filled With Threats

dylann roof father franklin bennett threatsDylann Roof’s father, Franklin Bennett, gets to spend his Father’s Day fielding off death threat calls because of his son’s actions killing nine members of the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC. The man, who has been reported as being an extremely abusive husband and father, has contacted authorities saying he is fearing for his life as he’s being harrassed and threatened. In my experience, abusers never take the behavior they have dished out for years very easily.

“The victim states that individuals claiming to be with the Black Panther Party have called several times and left messages stating, ‘I’m coming to see you real soon, buddy boy,'” records say.

“The victim states that another individual claiming to be from the Nation of Islam called and stated that they wanted to interview him and make sure his whole family was there. The victim states he believes that these phone calls are implied threats.”

On Friday, the same day Franklin Roof told cops he was being threatened, he released a statement to the media expressing “shock, grief and disbelief” over his son’s arrest for the Wednesday massacre at a bible study group at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.

Franklin Roof told police the calls have kept him from using his cellphone.

“The victim states that whenever his phone is turned on, that he is constantly receiving calls from restricted numbers that are making harassing comments with implied threats to harm, with the intent to intimidate him and his family,” police records say.

“He has to keep his cellphone turned off in order to stop the calls from coming in. The victim is concerned for his safety as well as his family safety.”

Police have been sitting in cars outside Franklin Roof’s home since after the shooting.

dylann roof gravesideCourt papers that have come to light are showing that during his 10-year marriage to Dylann Roof’s step mother Paige Mann, he was both physically and verbally abusive as reported by the Mail. She stepped forward on Friday to let it be known that some of the blame for Roof’s actions were to be laid on her ex-husbands shoulders.

“He controlled my whereabouts, the checkbook and everything about my life,” she said in an interview.

He threatened that he was “cutting off the electricity and taking my car,” she added.

“On September 20, 2008 my whole world fell apart when Benn and I got into an argument. Benn violently pushed me to the ground and hit me in the back of my head,” she said.

The two divorced in 2009 — and Dylann, then 15, was left with his indifferent father.

Dylann Roof soon quit school altogether, family said, preferring to drift between video games and drugs.

Top 10 Movies To Watch On Father’s Day With Dad

top fathers day movies images 2015Father’s Day is here, and if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to sit down and spend some time with dear-old-dad, why not pop in one of these heart-warming films to remind you just how precious the father/child relationship is? Or find it on Netflix, Hulu or On Demand. These will all be in one of those places!

life is beautiful fathers day 2015Life is Beautiful: Said to be controversial for mixing comedy with a story line about the Holocaust, Life is Beautiful is an amazing Academy Award winning film. The beauty in this film can be found in how far one father will go to save his son from facing the harsh realities of what’s going on around him. The bulk of a film follows a man named Guido and his son as they tragically becomes victims of Holocaust. He uses his bold personality to make his son believe their playing a game while at one of the death camps. His amazingly brave and innovative idea saves his son from the horrors going on around him. Get ready for a tear-jerker ending for the ages!

the pursuit of happyness fathers day 2015The Pursuit of Happyness: In a role that I still believe should have garnered Will Smith an Oscar, a man goes through hell and back to try and provide for his son while facing a life-changing internship. When the man’s wife walks away from the marriage (and her son) the man takes custody of his son, goes through homelessness and tries to make it past one of the toughest internships ever! The best part of the story is that it’s true! What this father does for his child is amazing. He never stops believing that he can make a better life for him and his son. In one scene (similar to the movie Life is Beautiful), the father makes a game out of having to sleep in a train station bathroom because they’re homeless. It’s a movie that makes you cry happy tears over the limitless love of a father.

to kill a mockingbird fathers day 2015To Kill a Mockingbird: A classic book and an even more of a classic film, this is the perfect movie to watch with your father if he likes watching old features. Even if it sounds corny, it’s the shining example of how a father’s influence directly shapes the views of their children. In the beloved story, successful attorney Atticus Finch defends a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Keep in mind, this is during the depression-era in the South. Finch also shows his children the negativity of prejudice in hopes they will be different from those in the town. Besides it being a “great white hope” story, it really does drive home the importance of how a father can positively influence his children. With the book’s sequel soon to come out, it will be interesting to see how Finch’s teachings affected his children for the rest of their life.

jack frost fathers day movies 2015Jack Frost: If you need to watch a Father’s Day movie with a younger sibling and your dad, than this movie is perfect! Jack Frost was one of my favorite films as a child. The story starts off tragic: a father who can’t keep his promises dies in a car accident right before Christmas. The following Christmas season, the man returns to life as a snow man in order to do everything he promised with his son. The movie symbolizes a Father’s never-ending love. I think it’s important to point out that the film also shows that sometimes fathers really are doing the best they can.

the family man fathers day movies 2015The Family Man: This movie is a unique take on keeping the positive in perspective about stressful family life. Nicolas Cage plays an ultra-rich investment broker who wakes up one morning to find that instead of having a sports car and a girlfriend, he has a mini-van and wife. Though completely shocked at how ordinary the other half lives, he realizes that the family life provides more happiness than his money could ever provide. A great comedy for a grown father and child.

boyz n the hood fathers day movies 2015Boyz N The Hood: A great film that puts into perspective all some father’s have to go through to turn boys in to men. It’s gritty and should only be watched with adult children, but it does feature an amazingly positive black man as he fights to raise his son right in a rough neighborhood. It’s a nice break on a tired stereotype.

frequency movie fathers day 2015Frequency: A great movie to watch with a sci-fi loving dad, this film follows a son as he accidentally crosses time through a radio link and connects with his father from 30 years ago. The son then tries to save his father’s life, but ends up stirring up some serious trouble. It’s a great drama that makes for an exciting and intriguing watch on Father’s Day afternoon.

taken fathers day movies 2015Taken: Taken, and not the repetitive sequels, is a prime action movie for action loving dads. A retired CIA agent kills just about everyone in a quest to get his daughter back after she is kidnapped during a trip to Paris. It’s Liam Neeson for goodness sake, every father’s hero so, you can’t go wrong when watching one of his films on Father’s Day.

father of the bride best fathers day movies 2015Father of The Bride: This might be a bitter sweet film for dad and his daughter to watch, but it’s still hilarious! The plot is simple: a father finds it hard to let his baby girl walk down the isle. I know my dad is dreading this day so he might find it sweet and sad at the same time. Father of The Bride II where the father is expecting his granddaughter and daughter at the same time is equally hilarious.

the godfather best fathers day movies 2015The GodFather: The Godfather is a classic in every sense of the word and it’s obvious why this is an ideal Father’s Day choice. The story follows the patriarch of a crime dynasty as he struggles to find who will take over his empire. This movie needs no further introduction. You might want to make this one a movie/Father’s day marathon and sneak in part I and II.

Clippers & Hornets Swap Crap Contracts for Lance Stephenson & Spencer Hawes

clippers hornets swap lance stephenson hawes nba 2015After signing Indiana Pacers role player Lance Stephenson to a three-year, $27 million contract last offseason, the Charlotte Hornets have traded the struggling guard to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Matt Barnes and Spencer Hawes.

Stephenson was a starter on the Pacers team with Paul George that won 56 games and made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2014, averaging 13.8 points, over seven rebounds and nearly five assists per game on his way to becoming a star. Well, the Bobcats (now Hornets) in all their wisdom decided to pay him like a star before actually testing him out with a different supporting cast.

“Sometimes when you make a trade or free agent signing it just doesn’t work out for whatever reason,” said Hornets’ general manager Rich Cho when asked about his expensive experiment. “He never fit in great. He is very capable of playing a lot better than he did last year but for whatever reason it wasn’t a good fit. Sometimes you don’t know that until a player actually comes to your team. For whatever reason, he didn’t gel.”

Maybe he just didn’t want to play for the Bobcats. Yeah, they changed the name; but it didn’t make them any better.

Saying the Stephenson didn’t gel is an understatement. By the end of the season, he was an expensive seat warmer who wasn’t even in the rotation. Oh, and his 17 percent shooting from beyond the arc is the worst in NBA history.

We’ll have to wait and see if Stephenson does any better in L.A., but either way the Clippers lucked out—trading away Hawes saves the team from paying the rest of his four-year, $23 million contract. Hawes played in about half of the Clippers games this season, and he just may have the best agent in all of professional sports.

Despite averaging 5.8 points and 3.5 rebounds this past season, Cho seems to think Hawes will fit in well with the Hornets.

“He has the ability to space the floor on offense as an outside shoot, and he’s a great passer with a high basketball IQ.”

Cho’s last big investment worked out well, so why not try again, right?

National League MLB Award Winner Predictions 2015

national league 2015 award winners imagesThe National League continues to produce some fire power a no one team in any of the divisions has really ran away in first place. That being said it should be a pretty fun stretch in the second half as the Mid-Summer classic is slowly approaching.  This also gives us a chance to take a look at the National League Award winners up to this date.

Honestly, the National League might have the best race to watch as we continue to see which rookie will run away with the Rookie of The Year award. Currently we have it as a two man race between the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson and the Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant. Could this race add a few names? You better believe it, as a player like Addison Russell could heat up to put his name into the mix.

bud black fired 2015 movie tv tech geeksAs far as the Manager of the Year award, the early front runner for many is Bud Black who is now on the open market as the San Diego Padres elected to let him go after the team expected big things from this bunch of ball guys. Now one manager that has really put his name into the mix is New York Mets manager Terry Collins. Collins has helped the Mets to the top of the National League East division in a division many had the Washington Nationals in.

Here is our list of award winners in the American League.

terry collins mets manager of year 2015National League Manager of The Year:

Terry Collins, New York Mets: We elected to give the award to the Mets manager over Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals. While Matheny has helped guide the Cardinals to the best record in the National League many experts had them as a favorite for the Central Division crown. Not many experts had the Mets doing much in the East with a possibility to finish in the middle pack of the teams.

That being said the Mets have done great this year playing to a 36-31 record after starting off as one of the hottest teams in all of baseball. After opening up the season at 2-3, the Mets ran off an 11 game winning streak with series wins over three National League East opponents which is never an easy task to complete.

Outside of these two teams many of the other teams have not lived up to their hype to warrant their manager for consideration.

gerrit cole national leauge cy young award winner 2015National League Cy Young:

Gerrit Cole, Pittsburgh Pirates: This is another race that is very close with two Pittsburgh Pirates fighting for the award. One of those starters is Gerrit Cole and the other is the veteran A.J. Burnett. Before you say anything yes it is the same A.J. Burnett that struggled last year and even mulled retirement before joining the Pirates.

That being said, Cole has been brilliant all season going 10-2 with a 1.71 earned run average over his first 13 starts. This type of success on the mound has helped the Pirates get back into consideration in the Central division as well as within striking distance of the Cardinals for first place just five games back after a slow start.

While Cole is our choice, Burnett has been brilliant as well going 6-2 with a 1.89 earned run average over his first 13 starts as well. Other candidates include Max Scherzer who is 7-5 with a 1.93 earned run average, Zach Greinke with a 5-2 record and 1.95 earned run average and Shelby Miller with a 2.02 earned run average to go with a 5-2 record.

paul goldschmidt national league mvp diamondbacks 2015National League MVP:

Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona Diamondbacks: Before anyone rips me for taking him over Bryce Harper we recommend looking at their numbers as they both stack up and I would be up for a Co-MVP award for these two with Giancarlo Stanton coming in just behind them. This might be one of the better MVP races we have seen and we can only imagine how this race could shape up over the rest of the season.

The Diamondbacks first baseman currently leads all of Major League Baseball with a .363 batting average to go with 15 doubles, 19 home runs, 54 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases. Flip over to Harper, the Nationals outfielder has 14 doubles, 22 home runs, 52 runs batted in and a league high 54 walks with 19 fewer at bats than Goldschmidt.

Then you have Stanton who leads all of Major League Baseball with 24 home runs and 62 runs batted in. Only thing holding the Marlins outfielder out of making this a Tri-MVP award is his batting average that currently sits at .261 for the season.

Outside of these three the only other player really in the mix for the award is Todd Frazier for the Cincinnati Reds. Frazier is hitting .294 with 22 home runs and 46 runs batted in for the season to go with 19 doubles and 48 runs scored.

Kris Bryant national league rookie of the year 2015 movie tv tech geeksNational League Rookie of The Year:

Kris Bryant, Chicago Cubs: We are giving the nod to the Cubs third baseman right over Pederson for the Dodgers. Bryant is hitting .295 with eight home runs and 39 runs batted in after appearing in 55 games after waiting for his name to be called up.

While Bryant has taking home the award, Pederson is putting together an unbelievable season as well with no one really calling it before the season. The Dodgers outfielder is currently fifth in the National League with 17 home runs only trailing four players who could be fighting for the MVP award. Pederson has also hit .252 to go with nine doubles, one triple and 33 runs batted in.

One other name to monitor would be Pederson’ s teammate Alex Guerrero who is hitting .287 with 10 home runs and 29 runs batted in.

Danny Ings is set to join Liverpool this summer as the Merseyside giants have already agreed personal terms with the striker. The 22-year-old scored 11 goals in all competitions for Burnley last season and his contract is set at Burnley is set to expire this summer. Ings isn’t the only free agent snapped up by Liverpool. James Milner will also be seen at Anfield next season after the player was released by Manchester City. Here are the top ten players available for free in this Premier League transfer window.

ron vlaar top free agents premier league 2015 imagesRon Vlaar

The Dutch centre-back was heavily linked with Manchester United but Louis van Gaal decided not to utilize the service of his former player who turned 30 in February. The Aston Villa player is still capable of competing at a top level and would be a fantastic signing for mid-ranking team.

didier drogba top free agent premier league 2015Didier Drogba

The Blues legend netted 7 goals in 38 appearances for the West Londoners this season. The 37-year-old striker can’t feature for full ninety minutes in the Premier League now but the Ivory Coast legend can still grab some goals playing in a league with lower intensity. His rumored move to MLS seems inevitable now as Radamel Falcao’s transfer to Chelsea is just a matter of time.

glen johnson top free agent premier league 2015Glen Johnson

The Liverpool full back has been a loyal servant to the club since 2009 and since then he has made 160 appearances for the five-time European champions. Glen Johnson, 30, will be out of contract this summer but there might be many suitors in the Premier League and Championship for the Englishman.

micah richards top free agent premier league 2015Micah Richards

Micah Richards has spent most of his football career at Manchester City but this summer the defender would be released by the club following his return from loan from Fiorentina. Richards was expected to do well at the Etihad but the influx of big money signings at the club impeded his progress. Aston Villa are ahead in the race to sign the 26-year-old in the coming weeks.

thomas thorpe top agent premier league soccer 2015Thomas Thorpe

Tom Thorpe appeared only once for Manchester United last season before being released by Van Gaal. The centre-back proved his worth playing for the youth teams of United, thereby winning a lot of silverwares with the reserve team but it wasn’t enough to impress the Dutch manager.  The former skipper of the youth team might prove to be a fantastic signing for some other club as he is only 22 and has an ingrained winner’s mentality.

Jonas Gutierrez top man premier league 2015 soccerJonas Gutierrez

Gutierrez won’t play for Newcastle United anymore as the Toons released the player at the end of the season. Over the last few years, the Argentine midfielder has been through a lot and he hasn’t received enough respect from the Newcastle hierarchy, which is why he wouldn’t think twice to move away from the club.

joey barton top free agent premier league 2015Joey Barton

The former QPR skipper couldn’t save his side from getting relegated to the Championship last season. The midfielder who turns 33 in September can still compete at a top level and he’d be a quality addition to any team looking to stay in the Premier League next season.

Mikel Arteta top agent premier league soccer 2015Mikel Arteta

Arsene Wenger brought in Mikel Arteta from Everton in 2011 and since then the Spanish midfielder has made 101 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions. Arteta’s spot at the North London club has been taken by Francis Coquelin.

youssouf mulumbu top agent premier league soccer 2015 imagesYoussouf Mulumbu

The fan favourite of West Bromwich Albion fans’ was released after the final game of the 2014/15 Premier League season. The midfielder would be a decent addition to the clubs in the top flight. Norwich City have shown interest in Mulumbu as they are hoping to partner him in midfield with Graham Dorrans.

Shaun Wright-Phillips top free agent premier league 2015Shaun Wright-Phillips

Shaun Wright-Phillips also faces unclear future in the Premier League and it is believed that the forward would move to New York and feature in the MLS, following in the footsteps of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

National League MLB Week 9 Winners & Losers

national league logo 2015The bats are starting to come alive in the National League as we noticed a few big time players putting together big weeks last week. One of those players was short stop Troy Tulowitzki for the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies third baseman is slowly starting to turn around his season after some what of a slow start in 2015.

This past week, Tulowitzki picked up hits in all five of the games he appeared in and did everything in his power to help his ball club win. Unfortunately the team managed to pick up just one win over that four game stretch.

In those five games Tulowitzki managed to pick up 11 hits in 21 at bats including one double, two home runs, five runs scored, nine runs batted in and two walks. His recent hot stretch helped raise his average to .306 on the season while he saw his on base percentage to rise to .333 and his ops to slowly creep up to .849 for the year.

This hot stretch will also bring his name up for the next few weeks as the 2015 Major League Baseball trading deadline approaches at the end of July. The Rockies third baseman has been rumored to be on the block for the past few seasons and now might be the best time to move him especially if he continues to swing a hot bat.

Here are the rest of the winners and losers around the National  League.

Winners:

anthony rizzo winner american league week 9 mlb 2015 imagesAnthony Rizzo, Chicago Cubs: While you might not hear Rizzo’s name mentioned as much as it is deserved since he is competing with a first base class that includes Paul Goldschmidt and Adrian Gonzalez as the top candidates. That being said, the Cubs first baseman is putting together another fine season as he currently sits at .332 on the season. Last week, Rizzo managed to hit in all seven games the team played including four straight multi-hit performances to end the week. Rizzo also managed to add five doubles, two home runs and six runs scored.

Miami Marlins: The National League East is representing the Winner/Loser list during the ninth week of the season. One deserving team to land on the winners list is the Miami Marlins after their 4-2 record. The Marlins managed to bounce back after a loss on Monday to take two of three against a very talented Cubs ball club. The success would continue over the weekend as the Marlins would take two of three against the Rockies.

Maikel Franco, Philadelphia Phillies: The 2015 Major League Baseball season hasn’t delivered much positivity to the Phillies fans. That changed this past week as the teams third baseman was able to put together one of the better weeks we have seen during the 2015 season. Franco managed to pick up hits in all six ball games he appeared in while posting four multi hit games. Overall, Franco managed to score seven runs, hit three doubles, four home runs and drive in eight runs.

Jacob deGrom, New York Mets: Much like Chris Archer over in the American League, deGrom was able to dominate in his two outings last week. The Mets starter made two starts picking up wins in both outings to improve to 7-4 on the season. In those two starts, deGrom allowed just two earned runs while striking out 18 total hitters. The strong outings also lowered his seasons earned run average down to 2.42 after it sat as high as 3.46 just a few outings ago.

 Losers:

Arizona Diamondbacks: We completely feel sorry for the Diamondbacks as they have the talent to win and now the front office has elected to send away one of their best hitters. That player was Mark Trumbo who they acquired from the Los Angeles Angels just a few short seasons ago. Now Trumbo has been shipped to the Seattle Mariners for a package built around Vladimir Gerrero’s nephew. Many experts believed the return of prospects was a little light based on the talent they were sending away. Those same experts have also stated they believe they could have gotten more as the trade deadline approached.

Washington Nationals: After a week on the winners list, the Nationals have managed to land on the losers list. This comes after the has managed to put together just an 2-8 record over their past 10 games. After a rainout on Monday, the Nationals managed to split a double header with the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday before losing the final game of the three game series on Wednesday. The wins wouldn’t show up against the Cubs either over the weekend as they managed to win the Friday game while the Cubs took three of four.

David Phelps, Miami Marlins: The Marlins starter was roughed up in his last outing as he saw his record drop to 2-3 while his season earned run average rose up to 4.68. Phelps struggled on June 6th finishing just 3.2 innings allowing 11 hits including two home runs and nine earned runs.

Aramis Ramirez, Milwaukee Brewers: Ramirez has been one of the top third basemans for a long time as he is appearing in his 17th MLB season. That being said we have yet to see someone defeat father time and that could be the case with the Brewers third baseman. Ramirez started five of the teams six games while also getting a chance to pitch hit. Unfortunately Ramirez didn’t produce picking up just one hit over 20 at bats while striking out six total times. Ramirez lowered his season batting average to .204 while he has only 16 runs batted in.

American League MLB Week 9 Winners & Losers

american league mlb baseball logo 2015Jose Bautista’s bat came alive this past week as he helped carry his Toronto Blue Jays for the week. We saw a very similar style of production from his teammate Josh Donaldson last week but with out the team running off five straight wins.

The Blue Jays power hitting outfielder picked up hits in six straight contests starting back on June 2nd against the Washing Nationals. In that contest, Bautista would pickup a hitin four at bats. The hits would keep coming as he would pick up a total of nine hits over the six game stretch.

Along with the nine hits, Bautista was able to cross the plate nine times while picking up four home runs, six runs batted in. Bautista also did what he has done best over the past few seasons and that was work a walk. In the six games, Bautista was able to pick up five walks.

Overall, Bautista is hitting .262 with 11 home runs, 36 runs batted in, 40 runs scored and 40 walks. Bautista also has posted a .400 on base percentage to go with a .937 ops through his first 52 games played. Bautistas success this past week has landed him on our American League Winners list.

Here are the rest of the winners and losers around the American League.

Winners:

Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles: The Baltimore Orioles outfielder has always been one of those hitters that can get red hot and put up some big numbers. That has been the case of late after hitting just one home run in the month of may while seeing his batting average drop nearly 40 points. Jones has picked up hits in five of hits last six games including four multi hit games. In that stretch Jones has 10 hits to go with seven runs scored, one double, two triples, three home runs and four runs batted in.

Albert Pujols, Los Angeles Angels: Not sure if every one has been paying attention lately to the struggling Los Angeles Angels. If you haven’t then you have been missing teams around the American League walking Mike Trout to get to Pujols. That has helped him over the past week as the future Hall of Famer has picked up four home runs and six runs batted in.

Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox have been one of the hotter teams in the American League over the past week. Yes you red that correctly but the team has some ground to catch as they sit in fourth place in the American League East. That being said the teams hot week started when the team took split a four game series with the Minnesota Twins before sweeping the last place Oakland A’s. This is what fans of the Red Sox expected after the team landed Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval this offseason.

chris archer week 9 american league winner rays 2015 imagesChris Archer, Tampa Bay Rays: Archer has been brilliant of late for the Rays helping them to battle it out with the New York Yankees for first place in the American Leauge. This past week Archer made two starts picking up wins in both contests as he managed to throw 15 innings. In that stretch, Archer managed to allow just one earned run while striking out 26 total batters. On the season Arhcer is 7-4 with a 1.84 earned run average to go along with 108 strikeouts.

 Losers:

David Lough, Baltimore Orioles: The Baltimore Orioles have yet to find that magic hitter to fill the void in the lineup. Over the past few seasons we have seen players put together some solid seasons for Buck Showalter including both Nate McLouth and Steve Pearce. This year Lough looked to be a candidate but he has struggled. Lough managed to post just two hits in 12 at bats last week including three strike outs.

Seattle Mariners: Another busy offseason that saw the Mariners add multiple weapons to the lineup including power hitting outfielder/designated hitter Nelson Cruz. Unfortuantly for the club he has one of the only offensive players to show up at the plate. The teams struggles mounted this week as the team managed to win just one game over a seven game period. In those six losses, the Mariners managed to score just eight total runs.

American League All-Star Voting: Yes we are putting the voting system on the AL losers list for this past week. On Monday the updated list of leading vote getters were announced and the Kansas City Royals have a record seven players locked into starting positions with a eighth player just barely sitting out of reach at second base. This is completely out of control as this will leave off deserving starters including someone like Josh Donaldson and centerfield Adam jones.

Omar Infante, Kansas City Royals: Infante is just one of two Royals starters that are anchoring a starting spot down on the All-Star team. The Royals second baseman struggled this past week as he saw his batting average move to just .221 during 49 games played this season for the club. In his five starts this week, Infante managed to pick up just two hits in 16 at bats.

American League Week 9: Twins & Astro’s Hold Top Spots

american league mlb baseball logo 2015The first full week of June is in the book as the Major League Baseball season continues to roll along. As we prepare for the warmer months of the season as well as the upcoming All-Star Game taking place in Cincinnati.

This week the trends staid the same around the American League as the New York Yankees still hold a slight lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, the Minnesota Twins hold a one game lead over the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central while the Houston Astros continue to be the top team in the AL West.

That being said we have seen a few teams make some significant strides over the past week including the Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers. All three of these teams have played themselves back into a chance to fight for a playoff spot once September has arrived.

Now we will take a look at each of the divisions and how they played around the American League.

East Division: The AL East continues to be an up and down roller coaster ride that has seen both the Rays and Yankees atop the standings over the past few weeks. Following them the Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox continue to fight for the middle spots as well as last place. That being said the Orioles currently hold the last spot but only trail the Yankees by 5.5 games entering their series with the Red Sox on Tuesday.

As we look at the division overall from this past week the Yankees and Blue Jays have been the hottest two teams. The Yankees are currently riding a six game winning streak while the Blue Jays are sitting on a five game streak of their own. These two teams continue to score a ton of runs as the Blue Jays have outscored opponents by 45 runs while the Yankees have a plus run differential of 30.

In the end the Yankees won all six games they played last week sweeping the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field before returning home to take all three game’s over the Los Angeles Angels. In that stretch the Yankees starting rotation only allowed more than three runs in one contest against two lineups that can put up some runs.

The Blue Jays only hiccup came on Tuesday in game one of a double header against the Washington Nationals. In that game Jordan Zimmerman held the Blue Jays lineup in check allowing zero runs. The Blue Jays would respond winning game two 7-3 before winning the third contest 8-0. The team would continue their hot streak sweeping the Houston Astros at home over the weekend.

While the Orioles continue to struggle they team showed some life over the weekend taking two of three from a somewhat hot Indians team after Matt Wieters returned from the disabled list.

twins astros hold top spot in american league mlb 2015 imagesCentral Division: If you haven’t paid attention to the AL Central race of late you might be surprised to see the Tigers sitting in third place behind the Twins and the Kansas City Royals. Much of that has to do with a recent stretch that saw the Tigers win only two games over their past 10 contests.

Luckily for them the Royals only managed to win three of their past 10 while the Twins split in that stretch. Starting at the top the Twins struggled this past week losing their first two against the Red Sox before losing two of three to the Milwaukee Brewers. This came just a little over a week after the team posted a five game winning streak.

The Royals on the other hand were dealt back to back series losses as they couldn’t find a way to take care of two of the hotter teams in baseball. The first stop for the Royals landed in Cleveland as the Royals offense managed to score just seven runs over a three game stretch. From there the Royals traveled to Texas managing to scrape out a win on Sunday to avoid a four game losing streak. The same issues arrived as the team’s offense managed to score just six runs in three games.

Rounding out the rest of the Central is the Indians in fourth place after winning three of six and the Chicago White Sox in last place.

West Division: The AL West division continues to be the biggest surprise in the American League and possible even in all of baseball. The Houston Astros continue to find themselves atop the division despite losing three straight contests over the weekend to the Toronto Blue Jays.

That has a lot to do with the teams below them as the Los Angeles Angels after making a move to catch them have only won five of their past ten games. The Astros recent stretch has also allowed the red hot Rangers to move within 3.5 games after the team won seven games over their last 10. That included taking two of three from the White Sox before taking two of three over the weekend from the Royals.

Following the Rangers is the Los Angeles Angels who have struggled of late losing five straight games to close out the week. That stretch came after picking up game 1 against the Rays to open the week. The team would go on to lose the next two to the Rays before being swept at Yankee stadium over the weekend. The Angels managed to score more rhan two runs in just two of those five losses.

Below the Angels are the Mariners who continue to struggle winning just two games over their past 10 contest. Followed by an Oakland A’s team that has lost three straight games.

Now that we have taken a look at each of the divisions around Major League Baseball we can take a look at a few individuals. Here is our list of top individual performers over the ninth week of the season in the American League.

Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays: Last week we saw Josh Donaldson appear on this list for the Blue Jays. This week it is Bautista who put together a big game four stretch starting with the last game against the Nationals. In six games the Blue Jays outfielder picked up nine hits with four home runs and six runs batted in.

Chris Archer, Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays starter was brilliant this past week picking up wo wins. The first came back in the team’s 6-1 win over the Angels as he went eight innings striking out 15. Archer would follow that performance up with another one run outing over seven innings striking out 11 hitters.

Week 9 National League MLB: Cardinals Stay On Top

national league logo 2015The baseball action is starting to heat up in the National League as the calendar month flipped to June. One of the races we are keeping our eye on is the National League Central as the St. Louis Cardinals still hold on to the top spot and the best record in all of baseball at 38-19.

Following the Cardinals are the Pittsburgh Pirates who have had a solid run of late winning seven of their past 10 games. That includes five of six games last week making them one of the hotter teams in all of baseball. Then you have the Chicago Cubs just one back in the win column of the Pirates at 30-25.

This division should continue to be one of the more action packed divisions filled with some great talent. As we look around the Cardinals have guys like Matt Carpenter, Kolten Wong, Jhonny Pearlta and Michael Wacha. While the Pirates are built around former MVP Andrew McCuthen. Then you have the Cubs who are filled with up and coming stars like Kris Bryant as well as veterans like Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro.

This continues to be one of the better divisions in baseball through the ninth week of the season.

Now we will take a look at each of the divisions and how they played around the National League.

East Division: The New York Mets have found themselves back atop the National League East despite losing six of their past 10 games. Luckily for them the Washington Nationals have cooled down of late posing only two wins over their past 10 games. This helped the Mets move back atop the division.

This past week Jacob deGrom helped carried the load for the Mets as they went 2-0in both of his starts while only going 3-4 overall for the week. In those two starts deGrom managed to work 15 innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out 18 batters. The two wins moved the Mets starters record to 7-4 on the season while securing him a 2.42 earned run average.

Meanwhile the Nationals cooled off after making a run to position them atop the division after a slow start. The team opened up the week picking up game 1 of the teams double header on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. The losing would continue, as they would lose two more in a row including the first game in a four game series against the Cubs before picking up a win on Friday. The Nationals bats would continue to struggle as the team would lose both games on Saturday and Sunday.

One team that made up some ground was the Miami Marlins who played to a 4-2 record over the past week while allowing opponents to score no more than three runs in the teams four wins. Currently the Atlanta Braves sit in third place followed by the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies.

st louis cardinals top spot week 9 mlb 2015Central Division: Moving to the Central Division we continue to become a believer that the National League Central division might be the best division in baseball. The St. Louis Cardinals currently sit with the best record in baseball while both the Pirates and Cubs are built to contend in 2015.

Entering play on Monday the Cardinals sat at 38-19 while the Pirates trailed them at 31-25 with the Cubs at 30-25. The one thing that is interesting about this division is all five teams have the talent to contend for the division despite slow starts by both the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.

Over the past week plus only the Brewers failed to post at least five wins in their last 10 games.

West Division: While we believe the NL Central might be the best division we also believe the National League West might be the most underachieving division in baseball.

Now that we have taken a look at each of the divisions around Major League Baseball we can take a look at a few individuals. Here is our list of top individual performers over the ninth week of the season in the American League.

As we sit and look back at week 9 the Los Angeles Dodgers still hold the top spot followed by the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. Of those team the Padres, Diamondbacks and Rockies have all struggled but have played well of late as all three teams posted six wins over their past 10 games.

While the Dodgers and Giants only posted a 4-6 record over the same 10 games. Another odd ball piece of information we noticed looking over our notes was the fact that all five teams lost on Sunday. Now it might not be important in the baseball world but it still was an interesting piece of

Now that we have taken a look at each of the divisions around Major League Baseball we can take a look at a few individuals. Here is our list of top individual performers over the ninth week of the season in the National League.

Jacob deGrom, New York Mets: The Mets have found a way to get back to the top of the National League East. deGrom made two starts last week picking up wins in both contests to improve his record to 7-4 while lowering his earned run average to 2.42 for the season.

Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies: Tulowitzki has been hot of late raising his batting average all the way up to .306 after a slow start. Over his last five games the Rockies short stop has four multi hit games, nine total hits including two home runs while driving in nine runs.

2015 NBA Finals Posting Best Viewer Ratings since Michael Jordan

0

nba finals posts best ratings 2015It’s no secret that basketball popularity is on a steady rise worldwide; and with LeBron James and the Golden State Warriors going at each other in one of the more exciting NBA Finals in recent memory, ratings are on the rise as well.

The average viewership per game is an outstanding 19.2 million—more than a 25 percent increase from last season, and the most since 1998 when the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls defeated the Utah Jazz while 29 million tuned in. Since ’98, the only other Finals matchup that came this close to 20 million was the Los Angeles Lakers dismantling of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001.

Good games and nail-biting finishes don’t always draw a crowd, which makes what these two teams are doing even more impressive. The Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t a huge market team, and LeBron is a very familiar superstar; and the Warriors on the other hand practically became a championship contender overnight. Yet, somehow these two teams are bringing a resurgence to the sport’s biggest event.

It could be any number of things: LeBron and Steph Curry are two of the biggest basketball stars in the world right now with massive followings. The Cavs and Warriors are both desperate to win and bring home a championship for the first time in who knows how long—or, in the Cavs’ case, the first time ever.

Maybe it’s the media coverage on The King and the greatness that has been pulsing out of him in this series. Two triple-doubles, the first player to average 35-10-5 in the Finals, and all without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love on the court. What James has done cannot be ignored, and people don’t like to feel like they’re missing out. And at the end of the day, whether you like him or hate him, LeBron makes plays that amaze.

Curry does too. So do the rest of the Warriors. Maybe it just goes to show that people want excitement when they watch a game. They want to say LeBron dunk over a center or Steph break someone’s ankles before pulling up and drilling his eight 3-ball of the game.

No offense to Tim Duncan or the San Antonio Spurs, but fundamentals just don’t draw a crowd like electrifying dunks.

Dylann Roof Finds Supporter in Rick Perry & Blanket Turns Bigi: Celebrity Gossip

Things are heating up and there is so much going on as this week had another sad day when Dylann Storm Roof decided to kill several innocent churchgoers and now Rick Perry is giving his weird support claiming it was all just an accident.

blanket jackson name changed to bigiBlanket Jackson Changes His Name

Life can either be great or totally awful when you are famous. Add in being the child of one of the most beloved mega stars of all time and life probably leans toward more of the latter.

I guess that is why Blanket Jackson, the last child (or something like that) of the late Michael Jackson, has decided to change his name. But his new name doesn’t seem that much more normal thank “Blanket.”

Call him Bigi from now on. The reasons for the 13 year old wanting to change his name has something to do with being picked on and being the target of jokes. He chose the name because of it’s German origins meaning “idealistic, sensitive, and inspirational.”

At least he changed it to something meaningful. Some kids just go with what is cool, hip or different for the sake of being different. Good job Bigi!

safaree samules wild n out not good 2015 gossipSafaree Samuels’ Turn on Wild N’ Out Not a Good Look

You know Sarafree Samuel’s, Nicki Minaj’s ex, really makes it hard to feel sympathy for him. He is cocky, he’s opportunistic and as I mentioned before, he is a joke.

And the joke is obviously on him. For the life of my I don’t know why he even thought appearing on Nick Cannon’s MTV show Wild N’ Out would be a good idea or a good look, but he did and needless to say, he got served.

He didn’t really get a chance to say much but ya know, what can you really say when you are known more for being with a super star than your actual talents. Ah, sounds like a female celebrity I know… ahem… Kim K… cough. But then again I guess it depends on who you ask when you consider what “talents” she used to make herself famous.

Dylann Storm Roof church killer 2015Dylann Storm Roof, Charleston Church Massacre… Killer Caught Charged with First Degree Murder

Even as I type this is it hard because how many more times am I and other writers going to have to include these kinds of stories in our writings?

21-year-old white male Dylann Roof, a household name by now, shot and killed nine members of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC on Wednesday because he is a racist terrorist who has no soul.

dylann roof charleston church killer 2015 gossipThe shooting is being considered a hate crime as it should, and the whole situation just weighs so heavily on the heart of this nation. The man sat in the prayer service with his victims for more than an hour before he committed his crime and even said that he almost didn’t do it because they were so nice to him. How heartbreaking is that.

For those who believe, for what ever reason, that racism is dead in America and that it is not a problem, go crawl under a rock somewhere and live your delusional lives because this crime and so many others continue to show that we are still dealing with racism on very large scales.

dylann roof captured

And then the fucking cop that arrested him put a damn bullet proof vest on him but chokes out, body slams, shoots and kills unarmed black folks who haven’t committed a crime? Literally, I can’t.

Rick Perry gives support for dylann roofRick Perry… Shut the Fuck Up

I just don’t get it. How can these kinds of people exist? And there is no way in hell I would ever vote for them in any capacity.

According to Rick Perry Republican presidential candidate and former Texas Gov., what happened in Charleston was an accident and the Obama administration always blows up these kinds of stories to get their gun control agenda passed.

What the fuck!

“This is the M.O. of this administration, any time there is an accident like this — the president is clear, he doesn’t like for Americans to have guns and so he uses every opportunity, this being another one, to basically go parrot that message.”

Then (like I am about to close this fucking computer) he says that the shooter (not alleged shooter because ya know, he did confess that he did it) was more than likely under the influence of drugs and a conversation needs to be had about that “real issue.”

“This is the M.O. of this administration, any time there is an accident like this — the president is clear, he doesn’t like for Americans to have guns and so he uses every opportunity, this being another one, to basically go parrot that message.”

There is nothing that he nor anyone can say that will take the focus off of the shooter and what he did. We cannot let Perry or anyone else desensitize us to these situations by their words.

HANNIBAL 302 Primavera Made Me Carb Crash

hannibal 302 primavera carb crash images 2015Hannibal’s season 3 episode 2 entitled Primavera might be the first time I ever felt like falling asleep during an episode. This season is already off to a very slow start and I can only hope that the third episode is the charmed (and more exciting one). While the first episode of the season was slow, it did feel like it served a purpose. It followed Hannibal and his new “bride” as they adjust to their “new life” in Italy. This episode felt more like filler.

The events in this episode felt like it could be absorbed in to another episode through a few brief flashbacks. They did not need to have their own hour. The episode began with a flashback from the season 2 finale. It felt like a complete waste of time because the flashback they focused on was one of (if not the) most memorable moments of season 3: the gutting of Will Grahm and the moment when he cut Abigail’s throat in front of Will. The flashback feels like a reminder of the betrayal Hannibal felt when Will betrayed him and tried to have him locked up.

Hannibal even says to Will in what comes across as a hurt school boy routine, “ I let you know me, I let you see me. You would deny me my life? You would deny me my freedom?” The entire episode, although not particularly exciting, is very stylish and artistic. After a blood drenched artistic death scene we are then led to Will waking up in a hospital bed. He clearly isn’t sure whether he made the right choice or not. He’s astonished ( and so is the audience) when it is revealed that Abigail survived yet another throat cutting. Will is happy to see Abigail alive as he was feeling responsible for her potentially chilling death.

In a twisted revelation, Abigail tells Will that she’s upset about the fact that he betrayed Hannibal instead of allowing them to become some strange happy family. Will believes that everything happens for a reason and that the massacre with Hannibal was the end for them.

Abigail explains that it’s not the end for them at all. The audience knows that she’s right.

Like in the first episode of the season, the man and woman pair ( Will and Abigail) go of to Italy. The episode shows the pair in Italy eight months later looking at the corpse of the narcissistic poet from episode one. His corpse has been twisted and bent in to the shape of a heart and placed on a church podium by Hannibal.

Will is taken to the police station and meets Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi. Pazzi is obsessed with capturing Hannibal as he chased him 20 years earlier when he was known as “The Monster of Florence.” Hannibal murdered people and arranged them to depict people in the Sandro Botticellia painting Primavera. Primavera means spring so the murder signifies the “springing” of Hannibal as a serial killer.

The detective does not feel completely legit as he admires Hannibal and doesn’t seem too concerned about bringing him to justice. He seems to be after more of a sit down. Will revisits the crime scene and does his usual round of disturbing deductive reasoning. He soon realizes that the poets body signifies Hannibal’s broken heart. The meat begins to pulsate and come alive after mutating in to this strange deer monster. The scene is pretty creepy and equally confusing.

Abigail suddenly arrives back at the church just in time to get Will out of the dark part in his head. Will is filled with guilt about wanting to till be friends with Hannibal. Abigail tells him it’s OK, because she wants to be with Hannibal too. In a shocking moment, Abigail’s throat slits open and gushes blood.

In a flashback it’s revealed that Abigail did die after Hannibal slit her throat. Everything makes sense now as it was very hard to buy that Abigail could withstand another slice to the throat, especially such a brutal one. It’s clear that Will has been feeling guilty for many months about the death of Abigail and that keeping her alive in his mind is the only way he could cope. Guilt is one thing, but Will’s obsession with Abigail is even more creepy then his obsession with Hannibal. He’s failed every time he tried to save Abigail and this time was absolutely no different.

It’s clear from his delusions that even though he was cured of meningitis previously, his sanity is clearly still slipping away. When the detective senses that Hannibal is still in the Church, him and will chase Hannibal throughout the underground tunnel. It’s a very atmospheric and dark scene. It feels like everyone is now drenched in the darkness of Hannibal and all they can do is chase him and hope that they catch him

When Will feels Hannibal’s presence close to him he tells Hannibal that “he forgives him.” Hannibal considers this, but it doesn’t look like plans to end his game will happen anytime soon. This episode focuses primarily on Will’s tortured feelings about his friend “Hannibal.” This entire hour feels like a filler as these feelings have already been rehashed a million times over towards the end of season 2.

We still don’t know whether Crawford or Alana is a live and if they are, what is the emotional repercussions for them from the massacre? Alana was sleeping with Hannibal for God’s sake; there has to be some hurt feelings there!

My hope for season 3 episode 3 is that the entire old team hooks back up to pursue Hannibal and he struggles to keep his cool while making a new life in Italy. As much as I love this show, this season is heading in to the dangerous territory of taking it’s self too artistically serious and muddling their great story line technique.

Time will only tell where this season leads as all relationships and plot lines are up in the air.
