Analysing Paris Saint-Germain’s Chances in Champions League

0

analysing paris saint germain chances 2015 soccer imagesEver since the Qatari investment in Paris Saint-Germain, the club has become one of the biggest forces in European football. They have won the Ligue 1 title for the last three years in succession and have largely been unchallenged in the domestic league, with Marseille, Lyon, Montpellier and Monaco all struggling to maintain a sustained challenge for the title through the course of an entire campaign.

The Parisians were so dominant last season that they ended up pocketing all four domestic trophies available – the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France, the Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophee des Champions.

However, the domestic dominance has increased the expectations of the club, and they are no longer satisfied with only winning domestically. The club has certainly not hidden their ambitions of challenging the traditional European powerhouses for the Champions League.

Laurent Blanc’s men have been a constant presence in the elite European competition for the last three seasons but have failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the tournament.

In the 2012/13 season, they topped their group that comprised of Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Zagreb with five wins and faced Valencia in the round of 16. The Parisians managed to overcome the Spanish outfit 3-2 on aggregate and came up against Barcelona in the quarter-finals. The Catalans managed to eke out a 2-2 draw from the first leg at the Parc des Princes but were facing the prospect of elimination from the competition after they were trailing 1-0 at the Camp Nou in the second in the absence of Lionel Messi, who started on the bench due to an injury. However, the diminutive Argentine came on for Tito Vilanova’s side and proved himself to be enough of a threat even on one leg to help the Catalans clinch an equaliser and oust the Parisians on away goals.

The following season followed a similar pattern for PSG. After progressing from their group, they came up against Bayer Leverkusen and hammered the German giants 6-1 on aggregate. In the quarter-finals, they went head to head against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea and registered a prolific 3-1 win at the Parc des Princes that raised their hopes of finally making the last four. However, the Blues won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and sneaked into the semi-finals.

Last Champions League campaign, too, turned out to be a similar story for the French champions as Barcelona eliminated them quite comprehensively with a 5-1 aggregate score at the quarter-final stage.

Nevertheless, PSG has significantly strengthened their ranks in the summer transfer window, and the most valuable addition is that of Angel di Maria – the player who was named Man of the Match in the 2014 Champions League final.

The Argentine has been touted as the missing ingredient in the French side that should be challenging for the Champions League.

The former Benfica, Real Madrid and Manchester United man has certainly shown the class that made the Red Devils sign him for a record transfer fee. And, indeed, if he keeps going at the same rate, he would surely push PSG towards that one final step.

Kourtney Kardashian & Kanye West Take On Lamar Odom Load

selena gomez ariana grande demi lovato menage a trois fest 2015 gossipWith so many female feuds lately in the entertainment business, such as Nicki vs. Miley and Taylor vs. Katy, it’s a nice change to finally see some women being supportive of each other. On Saturday morning, Ariana Grande tweeted Demi Lovato, congratulating her on her new album Confident.

In the tweet, Ariana said, “had to hit up [Demi Lovato] last night and text her a bunch of “yaaaas”es & “werrrrk”s because of these vocals on #confident! You diiid that!”

Not too long after, Demi returned the favor as she replied to Ariana saying, “it always means a lot coming from you girly [Ariana Grande.] [Love] you tons and I can’t wait for #FOCUS!!!” Here, Demi refers to Ariana’s upcoming single “Focus” from her third studio album, Moonlight.

However, Ariana’s praising didn’t stop there. The young singer also tweeted at Selena Gomez and congratulated her on her new album, Revival. Grande posted a tweet saying, “And while we’re on the topic of new music, I have to mention #REVIVAL is so effing good [Selena Gomez]!! I’m in love. I love nothing more than seeing young women doing what they love & kicking a** at it.”

Gomez responded with a simple “AMEN” to Ariana’s tweet.

kourtney kardashian kanye west take on lamar odom load 2015 gossipWhile the Kardashian clan has certainly had a busy and upsetting week after Lamar Odom was found unconscious at the Love Ranch in Nevada, Kourtney Kardashian and Kanye West have been tasked with holding the fort down when it comes to the children of the family. While Kim was away supporting Khloe and Lamar, Kanye cleared his schedule to ensure he could take care of their daughter North West, which included taking her to a birthday party at a go-cart track.

On Friday, Kourtney and Kanye were spotted bringing Mason, Penelope and Reign Disick, as well as North West to Tyga’s son’s birthday party in Burbank, California. Tyga’s son, King Cairo, turned three at the star-studded event.

Like Kanye, Kourtney was also single parenting for the day, as it was earlier revealed that Scott Disick (father of her children) had admitted himself into rehab for substance abuse problems.

A witness from the party tells E! News about the party saying, “Kylie was there with Tyga, Kourtney was there with all three of her kids and a nanny and Kanye arrived a few minutes after Kourtney, carrying North in his arms. Travis Barker brought his kids, and Chris Brown was there with [daughter] Royalty as well.” The source added, “Everyone had a really good time considering the circumstances [surrounding Lamar Odom]. It was a good distraction to be watching the kids having fun and be out and about.”

SHARK TANK 704: Mark Cuban Gets Wet For Dude Wipes

Pizza, poo, cookie brownies and dude butt wipes are on tap for this episode of Shark Tank featuring five sharks – Robert Herjavec, Lori Greiner, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O’Leary and Mark Cuban – who were pitched by four different up-and-coming companies that were looking for an investment.

Here is the recap of the four pitches from tonight’s entrepreneurs:

  1. Table 87 Coal Oven Pizza

Asking:  $200,000 for 10%

Owner Tom Cucco is a pizza-loving entrepreneur from Brooklyn, New York. He created Table 87, which is a restaurant that offers coal oven pizza by the slice. He boasts that his restaurant is the first coal oven pizza shop in Brooklyn. In contrast to normal wood or gas burning ovens, Tom cooks his pizzas in ovens that burn at temperatures of 900 to 1100 degrees, which allows him to “flash cook” his pizza slices in minutes.

Tom is hoping to further expand his business by going nationwide and offering his pizzas in the frozen aisle of grocery stores. He has already garnered some success through this route, as he has sold $260,000 worth of frozen pizza.

Initially, Kevin points out how competitive the pizza business is. Not long after, Robert agrees with Kevin’s point and drops out.

The first shark to offer is Barbara. She says she would be willing to give him $200,000 for 30% of his business. Shortly after, O’Leary offers $200,000 with a royalty on every slice Tom sells until he receives $600,000. Lastly, Lori offers Tom $250,000 for 20%.

In the end, Tom accepts a deal from Lori at $250,000 for 18.5%

  1. EZ Pee Z

Asking: $50,000 for 15%

The EZ Pee Z is a potty training device created by entrepreneur, Brian Kleinschmidt. The device attaches to the toilet like an ordinary toilet seat but has an additional flip-up component that quickly converts it into a child size seat. Brian hypes his product by telling the sharks that his product is as easy as, “one…two…Pee!”

Right off the bat, Kevin expresses hesitancy, as he believes that the product would pinch a child’s skin when they sit. In addition, Robert also expresses concern, as he doesn’t think people will actually want to go to the trouble of switching out their toilet seats.

Unfortunately, Mark and Barbara don’t have any interest in the seat and drop out. Afterwards, Robert says Brian became “too transparent” in his selling, and he also drops out. Lori is a bit kinder and tells him that his idea has some merit, but he needs some proof of concept. Both Lori and Kevin drop out.

Thus, Brian walks out with no deal.

  1. Milk + Brookies

Asking: $100,000 for 20%

Milk and Brookies is an e-commerce company that specializes in extra sweet treats, created by Jovon English, Marques Brooks and Naimah Harris. The name “Brookies” comes from their inventive way of blending cookies and brownies together. The three entrepreneurs are hoping to get a partner-shark and an investment, as they believe they have created the newest trend in food.

While all of the sharks enjoy the milk and brookies they are given to taste; they aren’t as impressed with the company’s sales of just $14,000. Additionally, none of the entrepreneurs are full-time in their business, which is always a cause of concern for the sharks.

Kevin and Mark are quick to drop out. Next, Robert drops out as he feels it is too early to invest. However, he does assure them they will be getting plenty of sales after their pitch airs on TV. Lori and Barbara also drop out.

Therefore, Jovon, Marques and Naimah walk out without a deal.

  1. Dude Wipes

Asking: $300,000 for 10%

The last pitch of the night is from Jeff Klimkowski, Sean Riley and Ryan Meegan, the creators of Dude Products. The three men come into the tank with their company’s creation, Dude Wipes. Dude Wipes are flushable wipes that can be used to freshen up without the “girly” scents that most wipes have.

The company currently has sales of $300,000. Additionally, they also have a deal with Kroeger, where their wipes will be distributed to 1500-2200 stores nationwide. Therefore, they are projecting their sales to be $1.5 million by year-end. Ultimately, they are looking for an investment from the sharks to try and get their wipes in more big box stores.

Mark is the first one to take action, as he tells the guys of Dude Wipes that he isn’t a “wipes kind of guy” and he thinks that they are underestimating the capital they will need. Thus, Mark drops out, and Barbara quickly does the same. Herjavec is impressed with their business’ growth, so he offers them $300,000 for 20%. Kevin comes in as well and offers them the exact same offer as Herjavec. Lori likes the product, but she steps out because she doesn’t agree with the evaluation.

Kevin and Robert decide to collaborate and revise their deal as a partnership at $300,000 for 27.5%. However, the guys are hesitant about the increase in equity. Suddenly, Mark jumps in at $300,000 for 25%.

Therefore, Dude Wipes ends up closing a deal with Mark Cuban.

Crio Bru Update:

Crio before Shark Tank

Crio is a drink designed to replace coffee and hot chocolate by having better health benefits and great taste. It was created by Eric Durtschi and Jon Fortheringham after Eric experimented with a previous drink known as “the drink of the Gods.” With experience and knowledge about this industry after years of traveling, Eric finally figured out a process to create the drink with a proprietary process. The drink is made with 100% cocoa beans and contains no fat, sugars, sodium, or cholesterol.

Eric and Jon were in their fourth year of business before coming on Shark Tank. They were already in 500 retailers and made over 1 million dollars while expecting massive growth. This was due to the positive feedback and heavy demand for healthy alternatives in the food market. Likely wanting help to continue the growth of their business, Eric and Jon applied to be on Shark Tank and were invited for Season Five.

Crio on Shark Tank

Jon and Eric entered the Tank seeking 1 million for 10%. They began the pitch by selling the Sharks on the huge coffee market for their unique drink that has mix of chocolate and coffee with the use of cocoa beans. In addition, the drink is healthy by having only 10 calories per cup and provides gentle energy unlike coffee. They handed out samples to the Sharks as Mark mentioned “for 1 million dollars, it better be a hell of a treat.” All of the Sharks took a sip and, shockingly, most hated the taste! Mark immediately went out, knowing he couldn’t invest in something he didn’t like. Robert and Daymond were both on the same boat, with Daymond stating “it really is horrible” before they went out.

Kevin, not commenting on the taste, wanted to know why Jon and Eric valued the company at 10 million dollars. Jon and Eric mentioned they had 1.5 million in sales and they were expecting to be in over a thousand stores in the upcoming months. They also mentioned they hosted multiple demos with the product and about 9 out of 10 people liked the taste. Kevin brought up his common argument with food products being a commodity and that anyone can do it. Jon and Eric, however, mentioned they have a proprietary process that others couldn’t figure out how to do for nearly 150 years. This process was currently patent pending.  Barbara was interested in whom they were selling to and they mentioned they sold 60% of their product through stores who were reordering. Kevin, however, brought up another concern with the education process as people do not know the product it better for them than coffee and that the taste was the same, which a majority of the Sharks disagreed on.

Barbara, however, was the only Shark to mention she liked the taste and felt the other Sharks disliked it because they were expecting a taste like coffee. Mark disagreed, saying he was expecting a replacement for coffee and did not expect a certain taste. However, he felt the product just tasted like cocoa beans “mashed up with hot water put in.” Kevin went back to the valuation concern and Jon and Eric stated they would profit $150,000 with Mark responding “that is all that really matters.” Kevin, nevertheless, did not see how $150,000 in profit could relate to a 10 million valuation even with the proprietary process and expected growth. Because of this, Kevin went out. Barbara, although hesitant at first, ended up saying they were screwed which led to laughter from the Sharks after she went out. Barbara apologized, but mentioned she went out because of the valuation. Mark also apologized for the response he and the other Sharks gave for the initial taste and how they try to be supportive entrepreneurs. Yet Kevin, like always, felt Mark shouldn’t be supporting a company that came in with a 10 million valuation. Before Jon and Eric left, they mentioned they felt they would do a minimum of 10 million and really wanted a deal, but Kevin stated they would never get a deal by coming in and asking for what they did.

Crio after Shark Tank

Despite the negative feedback, Crio has stayed very successful after Shark Tank. As expected, the Shark Tank effect helped them gain new customers and sales. They have gotten many more positive reviews on their online sale outlets such as Amazon after airing and have over 100,000 likes on Facebook as they constantly update their social media pages. They have also recently updated their packaging the names  of some of their skews, yet have kept the taste that most consumers love.

It would have been very tough for Eric and Jon to get a deal even if they came in with a lower valuation when a majority of the Sharks dislike your product. Nonetheless, the value on their company was indeed too high as a lot of it based on potential and projected sales. Outside of Mark, the Sharks rarely value a company on potential as they do not like to “pay for the future today.” If they really saw value in having a Shark as a partner and came for that over the capital, a reasonable valuation they could have come in with would be around 1.5-2 million because they should include the value they get from having a Shark along with the capital. This pitch, like many, teaches future entrepreneurs that valuing your company wrong can ruin your chances from the get-go.

Champions League Midweek Soccer Preview II: 2015

champions league midweek soccer preview 2015 manchester city vs sevilla imagesManchester City vs Sevilla

The Manchester giants will head into Europe on the back of another comprehensive domestic win. Manuel Pellegrini’s men got the better of newly promoted Bournemouth 5-1 over the weekend. Raheem Sterling, their summer signing from Liverpool, turned on the style with a sparkling hat-trick, while Wilfried Bony, given a starting berth in the absence of Sergio Aguero, contributed with a brace.

However, it has been proven time and again that the domestic form is one thing, and Europe is entirely another for the Citizens. Heading into their Champions League opener against Juventus this season, Pellegrini’s men were enjoying a 100 per cent win record but folded up against the Old Lady.

But they recovered in their next match and registered a narrow 2-1 win against German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach. In their next match, they will be up against reigning Europa League champions, Sevilla. The Sevillistas haven’t had the best of starts this term as they sit tenth in La Liga standings. They will be greatly boosted by their recent 2-1 win over reigning Spanish and European champions Barcelona. Under Unai Emery’s management, they will surely fancy their chances against the Citizens, playing the same brand of attacking and nerveless football that has punctuated their European campaigns of the last two seasons. This has seen them pocket successive Europa League trophies.

Pellegrini has come up against Emery many times during his stint in the Spanish league, and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with in the midweek clash. It sure promises to be an enticing game in what is proverbially the Group of Death in the Champions League this season.

Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow

The Red Devils were absolutely hammered by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their last league encounter before the international break as they went 3-0 down by the 20th minute and ultimately lost by the same margin. However, they recovered and registered a stunning 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park – a ground that has proven to be a tough hunting ground for the Red Devils.

Louis van Gaal will hope that the win over the Toffees has erased memories of that bitter defeat to the Gunners as they head into the difficult trip to Moscow to take on CSKA Moscow at the Arena Khimki.

Van Gaal’s men started their European campaign with a 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven – the match saw Luke Shaw suffer a double fracture in his leg that has ruled him out for months – and then they went on to defeat Wolfsburg in their next game. The Manchester giants are second in the group standings behind the Dutchmen and will be eager to grab all three points against the Moscow outfit.

However, CSKA Moscow will be far from pushovers at home, and Van Gaal has also acknowledged the difficulty his side will be up against especially as the trip so close on the heels of the international break.

Fantasy Football Sleepers to Start for Last Minute Week 6 Adjustments

fantasy football sleepers to start week 6 nfl 2015 imagesDid you remember to set your lineups? Well, even if you did, sometimes stuff happens. Always remember to watch the FOX Pre-game show on Sundays for Jay Glazer’s In-or-Out, so you can make those last-minutes changes to injured players.

With that in mind, here’s a few guys that you can pick up or swap in last minute that may have a positive impact on your team this week:

Mike Wallace, WR, Minnesota Vikings: Teddy Bridgewater is one of my sleepers for the week as well, so it only makes sense to go all out and include Wallace on the list too. The Kansas City Chiefs have allowed the most fantasy points in the league to both quarterbacks and wide receivers, so the duo should be hooking up for at least one touchdown come Sunday.

Duke Johnson, RB, Cleveland Browns: Johnson hasn’t done overly much this season, but he’ll be going against a Broncos team that is second in the league in catches out the backfield allowed. Even though Denver has been fantastic at stopping just about everyone, those catches and short yards will add up very quickly. One touchdown by some miracle, and suddenly Johnson was more than worth the start.

Dwayne Harris, WR, New York Giants: Rueben Randle is hurt, Odell Beckham Jr isn’t 100%, Victor Cruz is more than likely still out, and Shane Vereen can’t catch everything. Eli Manning will be forced to spread the ball around against the Philadelphia Eagles, so look for smaller names like Harris to rack up a few points here and there throughout the game. Better than nothing if you need someone to play.

C.J. Anderson, RB, Denver Broncos: As much as I don’t want to put the name ‘Anderson’ on anything ever again having to do with fantasy football, he does have a very favorable matchup. The Cleveland Browns aren’t exactly known for stopping players—even struggling ones. If you absolutely need it, and everyone else on this list is taken or too expensive, maybe you should give Anderson a call.

Champions League Midweek Preview 1: 2015 Season

0

champions league midweek preview arsenal vs bayern munich soccer 2015 imagesArsenal vs Bayern Munich

The Gunners have endured a torrid time in the Champions League thus far, having lost their first two games. The Premier League heavyweights were handed a 2-1 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb at the Maksimir Stadium in their opening game of the 2015/16 Champions League campaign. The north Londoners were up against reigning Greek champions Olympiacos in their second game at the Emirates Stadium and against all expectations, the hosts were handed a 3-2 defeat by the Greek visitors.

The successive defeats have increased the pressure on Arsene Wenger’s men as they prepare to host reigning German champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday. The Bavarian giants have been in irrepressible form this season, having won all of their first nine games of the league campaign so far. They have also registered successive wins in the Champions League over Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos and sit atop their group standings.

The kind of form Pep Guardiola’s men have exhibited so far has made them firm contenders for the Champions League. The addition of Douglas Costa, Arturo Vidal and Kingsley Coman has come off extremely well as the trio have taken to their new team like a duck to water.

The kind of situation Arsenal find themselves in makes it a must-win game for them, or at the very least secure a draw. But looking at the way the team’s fortunes have panned out either of the results could be unlikely for the Gunners.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Real Madrid

In one of the biggest matches of the third round of the Champions League this season, reigning French champions Paris Saint-Germain will be up against Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Parisians will play host to Rafael Benitez’s men at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. Heading into the clash both the teams have a 100 per cent record in Europe this season.

Real Madrid have registered comprehensive wins over Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo, while Paris Saint-Germain have done the same. As a consequence, the match between the two sides is expected to be the decider for the group winner.

The match has an interesting sub-plot as Angel di Maria – who moved to the French capital earlier this summer after a solitary season at Manchester United – will be up against his former side. Interestingly, the last time the Argentine played for Los Blancos was the final of the 2014 Champions League where he helped his side to a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid to clinch them their coveted La Decima. The Argentina international was deservedly declared the Man of the Match in the final and will be eager to prove a point against his former employers when he takes the field in the midweek.

Real Madrid hasn’t been entirely convincing in the early season so far as they have played out three draws out of the eight league games, amidst accusations of Benitez resorting to defensive football. It will be interesting to see what the former Liverpool boss comes up with when Real Madrid face their first credible opposition in Europe this term.

Lamar Odom’s Kardashian Miracle

lamar odoms kardashian miracle images 2015 gossipJust when the odds were nearly all against him, Lamar Odom looks like he’s going to have a full recovery, and having his wife Khloe Kardashian with him through this was definitely a big help. Doctors at the hospital have upgraded his condition as he is now breathing completely on his own without the aid of an oxygen mask or ventilator.

Doctors are keeping him on an oxygen mask though as a way to bring up his oxygen levels for better recovery of his vital organs that were failing earlier this week. His heart is doing very well, and his kidneys have begun to respond also. His two other organs that were reportedly faily are still not responding so he’s not out of the woods yet, but he’s making some amazing progress on his journey out.

As someone who has gone through this with a family member, this is truly a miracle, and I have to give Khloe Kardashian credit for being there the entire time for Lamar. Just having a loved one (even an estranged one) can make all the difference in someone’s recovery.

He truly was just a minute away from dying, but it looks like Khloe may have given him a reason to fight to live. I am not going to be surprised in the least if they wind up reconciling before the court recognizes their divorce. They’ve had a strong bond through thick and thin, and this near tragedy is often the type of thing that brings couples back together. It truly could not have been scripted better for “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” if I must say so myself.

Odom began to regain consciousness on Friday.

He was found unconscious Tuesday afternoon at the Love Ranch Vegas brothel in Crystal, Nev., about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas. He had taken cocaine, alcohol and 10 doses of an herbal sexual-enhancement drug during a four-day stay at the brothel, authorities said.

Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, Odom’s estranged wife, has been with him at the hospital. Kardashian, whose divorce from Odom is not final, has been making medical decisions about his treatment, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Times earlier in the week.

Kardashian and her family members Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner have released statements saying they will not be posting to social media during Odom’s health crisis.

Alvina Alston, a spokeswoman for Odom’s aunt, JaNean Mercer, told The Times that Odom was able to open his mouth and speak on Friday.

Another source close to the situation told The Times on Friday, “Lamar is conscious and was able to say hi to Khloe, but his condition remains guarded.”

Officials have sent blood samples to be tested hoping to find out what drugs may have played a role in Odom’s condition.

To keep up with everyone Lamar Odom just go to all our articles here:

Rafael Nadal Fighting Back

0

rafael nadal fighting back 2015Rafael Nadal, following what has been a precedent-setting season for all the wrong reasons, appears to be rediscovering some of his touch. The Spaniard has only contested two ATP events and a Davis Cup match since exiting from the 2015 US Open early. However, the results of those matches suggest that he may be a major factor at the upcoming ATP World Tour Finals (November 15th to 22nd).

Last week in Beijing, Rafa cruised through the first four rounds of the 500-series event with only one lost set ahead of the final. Nadal’s string of victories in China included straight-set wins over both Canada’s Vasek Pospisil and Italy’s Fabio Fognini. Importantly, the latter is the player that eliminated the former World No. 1 from the Flushing Meadows draw, perhaps the strongest evidence that there is something in Nadal’s game now that had not been present just a handful of weeks back.

So far this week, at ATP Shanghai, Nadal has shown that, at this point in his career, he is once again capable of putting back-to-back tournaments together in back-to-back weeks. That is generally a very difficult feat on the ATP Tour, one that only the very best players usually accomplish.

In Shanghai, a Masters Series 1000 event, Nadal has thus far defeated Ivo Karlovic, Milos Raonic, and Stan Wawrinka. The Spaniard has Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (Head-to-head: Nadal 8-3) to best in the semifinal to set up what would likely be a championship showdown against Novak Djokovic, a semifinalist in Shanghai who himself still needs to beat Andy Murray to make the final.

ATP staff, writing at ATPWorldTour.com, have noted Nadal’s improved play, citing the win over Wawrinka in particular:

“Rafael Nadal’s growing confidence was clear for all to see as the Spaniard dismissed Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-1 on Friday to reach the semi-finals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters and claim his 300th win at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level.”

In watching Nadal play against Wawrinka, I noted that there certainly was a razor sharpness to Rafa’s ball striking. Part of that, I think, is actually due to the Swiss player being below par ever since Roland Garros. Even with both the Flushing Meadows deep run and with the title in Tokyo, Wawrinka still has not beaten a Top Ten player in months. I think the Swiss No. 2 is less motivated following his achievement in Roland Garros, and the best players will expose that in both Paris and London over the next months.

But there is also something extra in Nadal’s game right now that has not been there in 2015. Nadal had not yet qualified for the ATP World Tour finals at the start of Shanghai, but that qualification appears to be imminent. I have him as a second favorite to win the year-end event at this point, behind only Djokovic, with my complete list of favorites below.

1. Djokovic
2. Nadal
3. Roger Federer
4. Kei Nishikori
5. Andy Murray
6. Tomas Berdych
7. Wawrinka
8. David Ferrer

T.I. Backtracks Quickly On ‘Barbershop’ Comments

ti backtracks on barbershop comments 2015 gossipIn the world of the rich and famous, you HAVE to watch what you say because social media will come for your ass in a minute and do so with a vengeance.

I don’t quite know what it is that makes people, in particular, famous men, believe that they can say what they want or voice their jacked up opinions about issues and not have any repercussions. But that is what Atlanta rapper T.I. did, and after having his ass handed to him by women everywhere, he has backtracked on his comments. But is it too late?

If you don’t know what he said, here are some of the statements he made about a woman’s ability to run the United States.

“Not to be sexist, I can’t vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman… Just because every other position that exists, I think a woman could do well. But the president, it’s kind of like, I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally — they make very permanent, cemented decisions — and then later, it’s kind of like it didn’t happen, or they didn’t mean for it to happen.”

As if that wasn’t enough and because I guess he felt we didn’t get what he was saying he added,

“And I sure would hate to set off a nuke…You ain’t gonna be able to negotiate the right kind of foreign policy. The world ain’t ready yet.”

As you can imagine, the backlash was monumental. Women were not having it as well as men who felt his logic was anything but that. So what does T.I do? Apologize… via his Facebook page.

“I never intended to be taken as though I felt women couldn’t be leaders…I know that my daughters, as well as your daughters, can lead this nation as well as any other nation as long as they apply themselves and educate themselves and motivate themselves to do so.”

He goes on to say that he was only joking, and his comments are “not a reflection of how I feel. “

Oh T.I. Not only is his apology in direct opposition to what he expressed during his interview on DJ Whoo Kid‘s SiriusXM, it is bogus. The fact that he took back his statements and not simply clarify them, to me, is a clear indication that his apology is bullshit. He meant every sexist word he said. You don’t go into that much detail or say that much shit without having some truth behind it. Why even mention it at all if he was not serious? No respecting man is going to TOTALLY backtrack on what he said unless higher powers tell him to do so “or else.”

The real issue I have with what T.I said is that it is representative of the patriarchy system in place in our society. First of all, men can “joke” about that kind of stuff (which I again, I don’t believe he was joking), and it be okay. They make light of a woman’s natural tendencies to be emotional, vulnerable and sensitive, say the most sexist, offensive, discouraging things and then turn around and say, “ha, gotcha.” No, way, I can’t accept that.

The other ugly truth about the man control/lead system is that a healthy majority of men believe as T.I claims he doesn’t. A great deal of Men believe that since women have come such a long way thanks to the feminist movement and an overall shift in thinking over the last five decades, we should be content with the parts of society in which they allow us to have involvement. I mean ladies, we can vote, work, run for local office, head up companies, create products, make more many than ever before and still have some semblance of family. What more can we ask? How dare we want equal pay, equal treatment, professional courtesy and gasp a stab at the highest office in the land. How dare we think we have a right to these things.

I don’t care if T.I was playing. I believe that in every comment of jest there’s a good bit of truth. He could have come up with something better than playing the “I was joking” card. Because the way people feel about him right now, they are not kidding.

Johnny Manziel Alcohol Drama Back Again

Was it just a matter of time before Johnny Manziel had another bad moment that made the creators of TMZ happier than a casino elevator video? Probably.

Those who love celebrity gossip got their wish yesterday when a police report was released detailing a domestic dispute between Manziel and his girlfriend, Colleen Elizabeth Crowley.

The couple was in a car together when they were pulled over after a motorist called 911 when Manziel passed them on the shoulder of the road at a high rate of speed. Crowley told officers the couple had been arguing and that he pushed her head against the window.

She also tossed his wallet out the window. Manziel told police the two had been drinking earlier in the day. However, the officers stated that neither of the two was intoxicated to the point that they should have been arrested.

After all the drama hit the internet, the girlfriend went to Instagram to clear things up….aka, do damage control.

“J & I are good. I appreciate the people who stopped to check on us and call the police, I could see how it may have looked.”

“Anytime anyone sees a guy and a girl arguing on the side of the road they should definitely stop, you never know what that could be. Fortunately, it was just an argument, it was private, and we are all good!”

Well, it’s not private anymore!

Also, it wasn’t just an argument. Physical violence was involved according to the report, and it’s confusing to me that the couple was allowed just to drive off together. Just because Crowley said she didn’t want to press charges makes everything OK?

Here’s exactly what the report stated: “Based upon the statements of Mr. Manziel and Ms. Crowley, their relationship status, the lack of physical evidence, with the exception to Ms. Crowley’s left wrist, Ms. Crowley’s level of intoxication, the inconsistencies of Ms. Crowley’s statements ranging from whether Mr. Manziel was physically abusive towards her or not, and neither party wishing to pursue charges, no arrest was made.”

As we get closer to Sunday kickoff, this story will get bigger. Manziel will not be able to sweep this under the rug. ESPN and the NFL Network have about four hours of programming to fill on Sunday morning during the pregame talk. Manziel and domestic violence will fit nicely in those lineups.

I guess the Cleveland Browns think they can just keep this entire matter private as well, stating, “We were aware of the situation. It is a matter that we take seriously and have expressed our concerns to Johnny directly. Those conversations will remain private, and we will refrain from further comment at this time.”

Those conversations will not remain private for long. An NFL franchise will not be allowed just to ignore what happened in that car between a pro athlete and a female college student. People will want accountability from Manziel and his team.

Roger Goodell cannot afford another Ray Rice situation. He will have to act swiftly to avoid any perception that the NFL allows its players to use violence on women. And no matter how Manziel and Crowley try to spin this matter, pushing someone’s head against a window is using violence on them.

If Goodell pursues this matter as vehemently as DeflateGate, then Manziel may be hunted down like an escaped killer and shot on site.

Johnny Football’s stay in a rehab facility back in April made it all too obvious the guy was dealing with demons beyond middle linebackers and edge rushers. It’s not a shock that drinking has popped back up in his life. People with substance abuse problems don’t usually get clean and stay clean without the occasional slip-up.

If he were just caught drinking that would be news of course, but it turned into much more than that when a fight with his girlfriend became public. The decision to drink is likely to blame for the bad decisions afterward.

Those decisions could put Manziel’s career in jeopardy, even though he and his girlfriend would like for all this to just go away.

That’s a real shame because the guy looked like he had turned the corner and was acting more professional this year.

But we are just five weeks into the season, so I guess he didn’t deserve the Walter Payton Award just yet.

I’m sure there are Manziel fans and just casual fans out there who think this story will get too much run. I can hear it now, “He just had a spat with his girl. The media is making a mountain out of a molehill.”

While it’s true that this story will likely grow to the point of annoyance, just imagine if there were a video of Manziel pushing the beautiful young lady’s head up against the glass of his car. Think that would make it resonate a bit more with the public?

Manziel went to Twitter to say the incident was “embarrassing but not serious.”

He’s right about the first part. And he is going to see in the next 48 hours just how wrong he is about the second part once he becomes the focus of halftime reports during college football and is featured on all the pregame shows on Sunday.

Johnny Football is going to feel like he had his head slammed into a window come Monday morning.

Demi Lovato’s Spin Slam & Little Mix Walk Out On Justin Bieber

demi lovato spin slam 2015 gossipDemi Lovato has been keeping busy these days, as she promotes her new album Confident, starts a new record label with former Disney pal Nick Jonas and appears in a nude spread in Vanity Fair. However, even with this all going on the young pop star has found the time to add, “signed model” to her resume.

The 23-year-oldCool for the Summer” singer just signed her first “major modeling” contract with Wilhelmina, which is one of the top modeling agencies that has signed such stars as Robyn Lawley, Ellar Coltrane and Nick Jonas.

Earlier today, Demi released a statement saying:

“I’m thrilled to sign my first major modeling contract with Wilhelmina. I’m very excited to see where our work together will go creatively as I enter the next phase of my career and continue to develop as an artist.”

Alex Vaickus, CEO of Wilhelmina Models, also released a statement about Demi joining the label. Stating, “We are so thrilled to represent such a sophisticated, confident and talented woman, as Demi. She has proved that she is an accomplished singer and actress, and we look forward to seeing her success within the modeling realm.”

Demi made waves last week when she was featured in Vanity Fair, in a completely un-retouched and nude photo spread. Along with the photos, Demi talked candidly about her past struggles with body image and an eating disorder. Demi explained, “the reason I decided to do [the Vanity Fair] photo shoot was because when I think of confident I think of many things, but one thing, in particular, is feeling comfortable in your own skin. I thought there was something incredible about the idea of no makeup whatsoever, no clothes and no retouching.”

You can now listen to Demi’s fifth studio album, Confident, which is available on iTunes.

Spin magazine has called Iggy Azalea’s time on the album “The worst rap verse of 2015” along with slamming the album as a copycat of Katy Perry’s 2015 ‘Dark Horse’ along with Azalea’s ‘Black Widow.’

little mix storms out on justin bieber 2015 gossipRadio hosts of Australia’s Kyle & Jackie O Show learned the hard way that certain subjects are off limits with the girls of Little Mix.  The girls – Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall, Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock – did not react well when the interviewees asked them about One Direction’s upcoming album release date being the same as Justin Bieber.

Surprisingly it wasn’t the One Direction aspect of the question that struck a nerve with the band; it was because of Justin Bieber! You may recall that former One Direction member Zayn Malik abruptly ended his engagement with Perrie earlier this year. However, it wasn’t One Direction that got the girls of Little Mix fired up; it was the fact that they are constantly asked about Justin Bieber.

When asked about the Biebs, Jade responded, “To be honest, I’m sick of talking about it…. just about the whole Justin Bieber thing.” Perrie interjected saying, “it’s a bit of a touchy subject.”

Radio hosts, Kyle and Jackie tried to understand why the girls were so frustrated, in which Jesy explained, “We’re here to promote our single. We don’t really want to talk about Justin Bieber…”

Jade continued to express her frustrations saying, “We want to talk about our music, and then we get asked about him all the time. What’s the point? What’s the point? What’s the point?”

Shortly after Jade and Jesy stormed out of the interview, reportedly in tears.

NHL Calder Trophy Hopefuls 2015

NHL Calder Trophy Hopefuls 2015 imagesThe 2015/16 NHL season promises to be special for those keeping an eye on emerging talent. Two rookies that require no introduction at this point are both Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Jack Eichel of the Buffalo Sabres. However both of those players are with teams that are doing poorly out the gates – Edmonton and Buffalo combine for just one win in eight games.

While the Calder Memorial Trophy, the season ‘s end award for the best rookie, often goes to a newbie who is on a poor team McDavid and Eichel combine for just three goals so far in the young season. Accordingly, perhaps this season the trophy will go to a rookie who is on a more talented team. Artemi Panarin of Chicago, Dylan Larkin of Detroit, Max Domi of Arizona, and Oscar Lindberg of the New York Rangers all fit that bill.

The Chicago Blackhawks, despite going 2-3-0 in their first five games, remain one of the favorites to win the 2016 Stanley Cup (Source: bet365). Panarin, a 23-year old who played in Russia last season, has been a key player on the Blackhawks so far this season. Playing in all five games, Panarin has scored twice and assisted three times while posting a +2 for plus/minus. If Chicago can improve on their slow start and if the rookie keeps scoring then the Russian promises to be in the headlines a lot – something that can only help his Calder Memorial Trophy hopes.

The Detroit Red Wings are not really considered a contender to win the Stanley Cup this season. In fact, at 33 to 1 with William Hill, Detroit are a middle-of-the-pack team at best when one goes by betting odds. However, they are 3-0 thus far with a +7 goal differential against their competition. Larkin, a 19-year old rookie out of the Big Ten, has been a part of their success. In three games, he has a goal and three assists while posting a very impressive +6 on plus/minus.

The Arizona Coyotes have to be considered one of the surprises in the NHL after about a week of action. With a 3-1 record Arizona has a lopsided victory over the Anaheim Ducks, the Pacific Division favorite at this point. Furthermore, Arizona’s only loss came under trying circumstances as they played on back-to-back nights, losing to the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in the second game. Domi, a 20-year old out of Winnipeg (Tie’s son), has been a major part of Arizona’s surprise start. With three goals and three assists so far he is among the league leaders for points.

Lastly, the Rangers currently sit on top of the Metropolitan Division with a 3-2 record and they remain one of the heavy favorites in the NHL. Lindberg has a been a surprise on that team as the 23-year old Swede tallied four goals in the first three games of his NHL career. Even though his team has posted a couple of losses, Lindberg still has a plus/minus of +5, a stat that proves that when he’s on the ice things generally go his team’s way.

Hot starts are one thing, but there’s also regression toward the mean. The Calder Memorial Trophy is not about how you start or how you finish. Rather it is a ‘big picture’ award that is meant to capture the results of a rookie’s entire season.

Over the long term, I think McDavid will show the best learning curve and come through with a big time second half of the season for Edmonton. He is my pick to win the Calder Trophy with Max Domi my second favorite now.
