GAME OF THRONES 510 Finale Best Moments

game of thrones 510 finale best images 2015Sunday’s Game of Thrones finale ended dramatically, capping off another action packed season. With more deaths and naturally, more talking points, here are some thoughts and takeaways on “Mother’s Mercy.”

Myrcella Baratheon’s tragic death

Based on Cersei’s prophecy from Maggy the Frog, we always suspected the death of Myrcella would be upon us soon but the timing was tragic. Having appeared to have made up with Ellaria Sand, she sets off for King’s Landing along with Trystane Martell, Bronn and Jaime.

On the voyage, we see Jaime and Myrcella talking alone where he tells her just how lucky it is that the person she was to wed, was a person she loved. Jaime’s trying to get the point across that you don’t choose who you love and Myrcella immediately understands and confronts him.

myrcella baratheon dies on game of thrones finale 2015She knows that he’s her father. And she had no problem whatsoever with it. They hug with Jaime truly connecting with his own offspring for the first time until Myrcella’s nose starts to bleed and we assume she’s dead as she falls to the ground.

We learn that this was the work of Ellaria, who still doesn’t see that Myrcella had nothing to do with Oberyn’s death. And so, the Dorne story this season ended in an ironic twist where they do indeed kill children.

stannis army deserts him game of thrones finale 2015Battle of…five minutes?

The Battle of Winterfell was one of the big anticipations of this season. Just as Stannis is ready to start with the proceedings, he learns that half his army deserted him after seeing Shireen burnt alive. Then, he learns that his wife hung herself out of guilt. Then as he proceeds to Winterfell, he gets surrounded by a huge army – quite clearly not his day.

But just as the swords are drawn, the epic Battle of Winterfell is over in within five minutes? We cut to Stannis struggling in the woods, just about killing two soldiers before sitting near a tree where he comes face to face with Brienne, the one person who hates his guts. He seems resigned to his fate as Brienne asks if he has any last words.

“Do your duty.” Not only are those badass last words but even as Brienne swung her sword afterwards, right when Stannis said that, her facial expression changed. It’s as if those words reminded her that her duty was to protect Sansa, not kill Stannis.

And this is why I think Stannis is still alive. Every major character’s death is shown and for a character as central to the plot like Stannis, if he’s going to die, we definitely will be seeing it and not be left with a cliffhanger.

Meanwhile, Ramsay is still alive and well. Where was he when Stannis was surrounded? Do bad things ever happen to Boltons? Regardless, the fact that this battle was anything but a battle was a huge disappointment.

cersei humility sparrows game of thrones finale 2015Cersei’s atonement

I thought this scene was done to perfection. As she started walking through King’s Landing, naked and ashamed, you could see that she was doing whatever she could to hold in her humiliation.

At one point, I thought she taking it extremely well but gradually, you could see her slowly collapse emotionally and why not? People are saying all sorts of vulgar things to her, throwing shit, spitting on her and what not.

cersei atonement on game of thrones finale 510 2015Given how we’ve been used to seeing Cersei, it was very shocking to see her in this predicament at all. As she sees the gates and the atomenment comes to an end, the emotions come pouring out as she’s consoled by Maester Qyburn as Kevan Lannister and company watch on. Just wait until she finds out what happened to her only daughter.

Qyburn then introduces what seems to be Ser Robert Strong – or the newly revamped Mountain if you didn’t guess it. Notice those creepy eyes? He’ll definitely come handy in a not so far trial.

jon snow dead game of thrones finale 2015Jon Snow

It was coming. We all saw it but Jon Snow is dead. In the books, it was a bit of a cliffhanger as to whether he was really dead but given the brutal way he was stabbed by Alliser Thorne and company, there’s no doubt in my mind that Jon is dead.

jon snow stabbed to death game of thrones finale 2015But that doesn’t mean his role in the story is over. He’s not warging into Ghost but notice how Melisandre took a deep rooted interested in Jon? Well, she’s back at Castle Black, having presumably lost Stannis and with the powers of R’hllor, she’s surely going to resurrect him now, right?

I’d be very surprised if this is the end of Jon, especially considering Sam’s foreshadowing of “Jon always comes back” in “Hardhome” along with the fact that his true parentage hasn’t been revealed yet. My only question is where were the Wildlings at the time?

arya blind with meryn trant game of thrones 2015arya blind with meryn trant game of thrones 2015Other points

I really enjoyed Arya’s revenge over Meryn Trant. It was definitely one of the more brutal kills of the series but he completely deserved it. And Arya’s punishment for taking the wrong life resulted in her becoming blind ended her Season Five story on a definitely more interesting note when you compare it to the rest of the season.

Reek finally manning up and helping Sansa escape was also an interesting plot point, especially as it involved the death of Myranda. We may actually see Ramsay freak out for once.

tyrion governor of meereen game of thrones 2015Tyrion’s lines were great as always and his new role as governor of Meereen will certainly be something to look out for if it lasts long.

All in all, I might be in the minority but Oberyn aside, I really enjoyed Season Five, considerably more than Four. We got to see so many things that never happened in the books and those last 20 minutes of Hardhome were an absolute masterpiece. Here’s hoping for a successful Season Six.

Rafael Nadal Wins MercedesCup in Stuttgart

0

rafael nadal wins mercedescup in stuttgart 2015 tennisRafael Nadal took home his third MercedesCup title after defeating Victor Troicki 7-6(3), 6-3 in Stuttgart on Sunday. This was his first grass-court title in five years since winning in Wimbledon in 2010.

Nadal, who takes home €104,600 and 250 Emirates ATP Ranking points, clinched his first grass-court crown in five years, since triumphing on the lawns of Wimbledon in 2010. Overall, it was the Spaniard’s 66th tour-level singles title and second on the ATP World Tour this year, having emerged victorious on the clay of Buenos Aires.

“It’s a very special title,” said Nadal. “Since 2011 I didn’t play a final on grass, so win a title here is very good news for my game and for my mentality too. Congrats to Viktor for a great tournament. He’s playing great and will have some positives for the week.

“At this point of the season, every victory is important and every title means a lot to me. I’m happy for that… Thank you very much for all the support here in Stuttgart.”

The top seed needed one hour and 27 minutes to prevail over Troicki, firing 11 aces, while converting on his lone break point. He won an impressive 86 per cent (42/49) of first serve points as well.

While the first set featured no breaks of serve, Nadal took the initiative to open the second, securing the match’s only break in the fourth game and consolidating for a 4-1 lead. He would eventually convert on his third match point to close out the win.

The Mallorca native, who previously won the Stuttgart title in 2005 and ’07, improved his FedEx ATP Head2Head record to 5-0 against Troicki.

The World No. 28 Serb was bidding to claim his third ATP World Tour title in his seventh final. He hoisted his first trophy of the year to open the season in Sydney (d. Kukushkin). Troicki takes home €55,080 and 150 Emirates ATP Ranking points for his efforts.

“In important moments my focus was not 100 per cent,” said Troicki. “He served very well the whole match. Even though it was a great week in reaching the final, I’m disappointed to lose this match. I had my chances and didn’t use them. I lost to a great champion. He served better and congrats to him.

“It’s a good result. I’m now going to London and we’ll see. I have high expectations for the grass season and this gives me a lot of confidence.”

He seemed a little humbled by his prize presentation as the car was a rival to the car manufacturer he’s well paid to be an ambassador for.

rafael nadal wins stuttgart grass court tennis 2015It was not so much his performance in the Stuttgart final, where he beat Victor Troicki in straight sets to bounce back from his French Open disappointment, but more the prize presentation.

Most people would be delighted with a V8 Mercedes sports car, but perhaps not someone who is a well-paid ambassador for a rival automotive manufacturer.

“It’s not a Kia, but it’s still good,” Nadal said diplomatically after a brief inspection inside the garish yellow vehicle, winning huge laughs from the crowd.

“Will you drive it at home?” came the inevitable question.

Short silence. “Without the cameras around, perhaps yes,” conceded the Spaniard, who has been sponsored by Kia for almost a decade.

Then came the qualifier.

“I don’t know if I can change the color, because the color is a little bit too much for me,” demurred the man well known for his politeness.

It was a lighthearted end to an “emotional” week for Nadal, whose long French Open reign was ended by Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.

While most of the top men’s players took a break after Paris, the 29-year-old went straight back into the fray at a German tournament he won in 2005 and 2007 — this season it switched from clay to a grass surface and moved to after the French grand slam.

“It’s been a tough couple of years playing on grass, with problems in my knees,” said Nadal, who last year lost his opening match at another German grass-court event in Halle and was beaten by young Australian Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

“Today I’m ready to play again on grass, my knees are well and so is my tennis, so I’m very happy.”

While Roger Federer will defend his Halle title this coming week, Nadal will head to Britain for the Queen’s Club Championships in London, lining up with new French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and home hope Andy Murray.

Nadal, the top seed in Stuttgart, triumphed 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 against Troicki in just under an hour and a half, winning the $118,000 first prize.

It was his 66th ATP Tour title, but just his second in a year where the former world No. 1 has dropped to 10th in the rankings. He won Wimbledon for the second time in 2010, and lost for the third time in a final there the following year, but has not passed round four since.

Troicki, ranked 28th, was also seeking his second title this year but had to make do with $62,000.

Meanwhile, veteran Frenchman Nicolas Mahut won his third career title Sunday, beating second seed David Goffin 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 in the final of the grass event in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

The 33-year-old also won the co-sanctioned Dutch tournament in 2013.

Italy’s Camila Giorgi won her first WTA Tour title, beating young Swiss Belinda Bencic 7-5 6-3 in the women’s final.

Highlights of Forbes Highest Paid Athletes List

forbes highest paid athletes 2015

As kids, most of us had wild dreams of one day playing our favorite sport for a living. Getting paid to play a game you love must be awesome. But for most of us those dreams fade away during high school or college. The odds against making it as a professional athlete are just astounding, so only the best of the best even have a shot at making a roster in the NFL, MLB, or NBA.

The odds of being one of the highest paid athletes is even more mind boggling. You are more likely to be eaten by a Great White Shark in the parking lot of a Piggly Wiggly just after buying a winning lottery ticket. Forbes has just released the 2015 list so I want to break down the highlights on the new list of super rich guys and girls who get paid to play a game.

For a sport that is pretty much dead in the U.S., boxing holds not just the top sport on the Forbes highest paid athlete list, but also the number two position. Of course their “super (boring) fight” made Floyd Mayweather (#1) and Manny Pacquiao (#2) the top two athletes. Money May took in $285 million directly from his sport and another $15 million in endorsements. Pacquiao made about half of his rival, raking in $148 million from ring work and $12 million in endorsements. As they say in late night multi-level marketing infomercials, “these results are not typical.” The only other boxer to make the list was Wladimir Klitschko at #63. The heavyweight champ earned less than 10 percent of Mayweather’s total for the year!

We Americans sure do hate soccer. After all the NFL is real football right? That is my sentiment, but no NFLer is close to the two soccer guys who rank three and four on this Forbes list. Cristiano Ronaldo’s total income is $79.6 million, while Lionel Messi eked out a living with $73.8 million for 2015. Each of these soccer dudes earned almost twice in endorsements what Peyton Manning earned for his off the field work, and Peyton is king in the NFL when it comes to endorsement money!

Being the face of tennis pays pretty well still. Roger Federer pulls in $67 mil a year, with $58 million coming in endorsements. Dude is selling a lot of tennis balls I guess?

LeBron James really made a big sacrifice going back to Cleveland for a discount deal. Hopefully the “king” can survive on his $64.8 million per year, earning him the number six spot. To be fair his endorsement deals equal more than double his salary. Kevin Durant is right behind James at number seven. The OKC star takes in over $54 million a year with much of his coming in the form of off the court work. NFLers take note. It’s hard to get these kind of endorsement deals when your face is covered with a helmet and mask. Best find other ways to stand out so that sponsors seek you out to throw more money your way. See Richard Sherman for more details.

Golfing pays really well, even when you start to suck.  Tiger Woods (#9) made just $600K with what’s left of his golfing skill. He made up for it with car commercials and putting his name on other items for sale to the tune of $50 million. No athlete has made more money based on what he used to do. Phil Mickelson (#8) didn’t exactly set the world on fire with his course greatness either. He made $2.8 million on the golf course, with another $48 million coming from endorsements. Pay attention kids. Golf is super easy on the body and you can play until you have one foot in the grave. Be great for a couple of years and you have basically hit the lotto and will be able to coast the rest of your career just like Tiger.

Kobe Bryant came in at number ten on the Forbes list. Kobe still plays basketball?
Ben Roethlisberger highest paid football nfl player 2015Ben Roethlisberger is the top earning NFL player for the year with $48.9 million total income. Many people are fooled by these high profile NFL contracts. We often hear about $100 million deals, but the fine print leaves some of that money hanging in the balance at the end of a player’s career. Lose a step or fail to hit the deep pass on a regular basis and $100 million can look more like $75 million once you get cut with two years left on the deal.

Ndamukong Suh may not be the cleanest football player ever…OK he’s downright dirty. But it is nice to see a guy in the trenches make serious money. His new contract with Miami got him to #16 on the highest paid list. Suh makes nearly nothing from endorsements so he earns that $38.6 mil on the gridiron chasing QBs like a rabid dog.

Derrick Rose made it to the number 20 slot on the list even though he has been injured much of his career. The Bulls have paid this snake bitten guy a lot of money over the years. At least most people know who Rose is, as opposed to some guy names Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The fact that this cricket player is even on the top 100 list makes me wonder if the thing wasn’t all made up by Forbes just to be cute.

A soccer player with just one name made it to the #23 spot cashing checks for a total of $31 million dollars. I won’t bother mentioning his name since he must be world famous, what with one name and all. It’s nice to see Carmelo Anthony earning over $30 million dollars a year as he helps the Knicks embarrass themselves on a yearly basis.

Maria Sharapova is the top female athlete on the big money list. The beautiful tennis player understandably made most of her $29.7 million off the court. Nike and Avon (not door to door) help keep the lights on at the Sharapova homestead.

The NFL runs players off just before they start to be a shadow of their old selves. The NBA does just the opposite. They sign players to huge deals and have to keep paying them long after they begin to resemble a YMCA league player. Amar’e Stoudemire made the top 100 highest paid athlete list. Not only that, he is at    #44! This guy is totally washed up and made more than the best NASCAR driver alive, Jimmie Johnson. Stoudemire also made more cash than Tony Romo and Drew Brees. I hope Russell Westbrook is sitting down when he runs across this list. Finding out he makes $5 million less than Stoudemire might send him into freakout mode.

The best quarterback in the NFL is all the way down at #95. The Packers are getting a good deal with Aaron Rodgers at just $11.6 mil per year. Rodgers does well with endorsements at $7.5 million, but certainly could pull in more than that. He should be at least at Peyton Manning level when it comes to sponsors. These NFL guys need to talk to agents for tennis and racing guys. They are missing a piece of the puzzle somewhere.

The Forbes list is a super interesting look at just where the big money truly resides in the world of sports. The NFL may be king in the USA, but the players are not paid on the same scale as other sports clearly. College players of any sport should brush up on their communication skills and take as many marketing classes as possible. Endorsements are an easy way to multiple their earnings that come directly from their sport of choice.

It’s not very likely your kid playing pee wee football or little league baseball will one day earn a living as an athlete. But on the off chance they are that fortunate, you might want to steer them in the direction of the easier riches that lie in the world of golf, baseball, basketball, or even tennis. If they love football, advise them to enjoy it from the stands instead of getting their head turned into a canoe on the field.

NFL’s $5.4 Million ‘Salute to Service’ Demands An Answer for Taxpayers

nfl salute to service campaign cost to taxpayers 2015Maybe you’ve heard this story by now, maybe you haven’t. The NFL has done their best to hide this, and it’s hard to blame them—it’s a blatant embarrassment to the organization and the teams involved.

The Pentagon reported recently that since 2011 the U.S. Department of Defense has paid 14 NFL teams a total of $5.4 million to honor active members and veterans of the United States military at football games. You know, those guys that put their lives on the line to preserve the basic freedoms and liberties that we enjoy? Yeah, those troops.

The money was given to the teams in return for honoring soldiers and their families on the Jumbotron before games and at halftime, as well as box tickets for soldiers and their family and friends.

I’m not even going to get into the fact that the government threw away $5 million in taxpayer money so a couple of billionaires would do something that they should do for free and want to do as a thank you to these men and women. Sure, that’s a stupid way to spend our money; but the real problem here are these teams (probably the owners) and Roger Goodell.

First, I would like to publicly shame the teams who accepted this money in ascending order of how many they received (that way you know how hard to cheer against each team): Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and finally the Atlanta Falcons, who accepted an insane $1,049,500.

“Those of us go to sporting events and see them honoring the heroes. You get a good feeling in your heart,” said U.S. Senator Jeff Flake. “Then to find out they’re doing it because they’re compensated for it, it leaves you underwhelmed. It seems a little unseemly.”

That’s about right. In a country where all too often football and basketball players are seen as heroes and the military is simply taken for granted, it was always nice to watch the NFL give back to the real heroes. At least 18 franchises were honoring the troops for free…

nfl salute to service campaign cost 2015Flake continued to describe this behavior as “an egregious and unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars”; but he also proposing a potential explanation for why this money was being handed out under the table: the NFL’s ‘Salute to Service’ program is a huge recruitment tool. That doesn’t make what these teams did okay, but at least it’s somewhat of an explanation from the government’s side.

Now, do I believe that the teams were honoring the troops solely for the money? Of course not. I have no doubt that they were completely sincere in the actions and would have done the same if they didn’t receive any money. I mean, 18 teams were not being paid, but they still participated in the Salute to Service.

I truly believe that the problem here is simply corporate greed, which is why I am honestly not the least surprised that Jerry Jones (Cowboys) and Jim Irsay (Colts) are on here. This is something I just picture them doing, especially Irsay. Apparently a net worth of a couple billion isn’t enough, so they accepted money from the government for something that they should (and probably would) have done at no charge.

“They realize the public believes they’re doing it as a public service or a sense of patriotism,” continued Flake. “It leaves a bad taste in your mouth.”

The first question that came to my mind when I heard about this whole situation was where the hell is Roger Goodell and why didn’t he do or say anything about this?

Sure, I’m pretty tough on the commissioner. I don’t think he’s qualified to run the football program at an elementary school, but to be fair I’m a New Orleans Saints fan and still upset that the New England Patriots weren’t crucified for Spygate. The whole Ray Rice thing wasn’t handled well either.

Honestly, this should be the straw that breaks the commish’s back. I’m not 100 percent sure how payments like this are recorded and reported; but unless the money was being transferred in cash directly between the Pentagon director and the owner, someone must have said something at some point over the four seasons that this has been going on.

Goodell and the NFL have done a great job covering up this story, but hopefully this will reach a few people and generate some buzz about the story. This situation is disgraceful. Someone needs to answer some questions.

Who knows, maybe someone big in the sports world will read this and you’ll see me on SportsCenter next week. Or maybe Goodell himself will read this and call a hit on me for writing it and being a Saints fan. I don’t really care. I just want people to see that this is happening, because I want to know more about why it happened and who let it happen so those people can be held responsible.

I love the NFL, and I love football; but letting the organization get away with this sets a horrible precedent, especially if it is discovered that other professional leagues are doing the same thing.

Maybe I’m too late, but hopefully we’ll get some answers.

Chicago Blackhawks Take Another Game For Stanley Cup Finals

0

blackhawks beat lightning stanley cup finals 2015Chicago Blackhawks continue moving forward eager to land that Stanley Cup as they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 2-1. This gives them a 3-2 lead in the Final. The odds have been favoring the Blackhawks lately, and they’ll be playing on home turf so this could wrap everything up.

What happened: The Blackhawks broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period and moved within one game of their third Stanley Cup in six seasons Saturday night, continuing to shut down the biggest stars of the Lightning. Oh, much of the attention today will focus on Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop, who returned to play after missing Game 4 and going through several days of speculation. But along the way, the stars of the Lightning have been missing from the score sheet, too. Captain Steven Stamkos has now gone seven games without a goal. Tyler Johnson has scored only one time in his last nine games, and Nikita Kucherov only one in the last seven.

The Blackhawks are beginning to take on the look of a team that has just been in pressurized situations too often for the young Lightning. The first period, for instance, was perhaps Chicago’s finest of the series as they outshot the Lightning 14-5. Tampa Bay got the goal back in the second period, but couldn’t stem the Chicago tide.

The Blackhawks scored their tie-breaking goal with 17:55 to go in the game. Kris Versteeg got off a nice shot on a breakaway, and all Bishop could do was block it.Antoine Vermette poked in the rebound cleanly for the goal.

chicago blackhawks beat tampa bay lightning game 5 stanley cup 2015Ben Bishop stood in the crease looking as brave as he could in the third period Saturday as the Chicago Blackhawks mounted another charge toward him. The Blackhawks knew that Bishop, the Tampa Bay Lightning goalie, was dealing with an undisclosed injury, and they had challenged him every chance they could, testing the limits of his will and his tolerance for pain.

Now, Kris Versteeg had picked up a loose puck and created a breakaway. As the Lightning defense caught up to him, Versteeg briefly lost the puck and then slid it toward the crease. Amid the commotion, ice sprayed Bishop’s face. He did all he could to stick out his foot and kick the puck away. But the puck skidded to Antoine Vermette, who rifled in the go-ahead goal.

Bishop dropped his arms to his side in exhaustion, as if to say, oh well. He had been knocked down by his own teammate on Chicago’s first goal. He ended up at the bottom of a pile after another scrum in front of the net. He slid, kicked and dived, expending all his energy to finish with 27 saves and give the Lightning a chance to win.

The difference between the two teams was, perhaps, that the Blackhawks had the healthier goalie. Behind Corey Crawford and his 31 saves, Chicago beat Tampa Bay, 2-1, in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals, on the Lightning’s home ice. The Cup will be on hand Monday, for Game 6, back in Chicago.

“This is not near over,” Lightning Coach Jon Cooper said.

And it was hard not to believe him. This has been the closest finals in 64 years, with the first five games being decided by one goal each. Every goal is precious, every save a near miracle. That is why Bishop’s health has been so important.

He looked noticeably hurt during Game 3, but the Lightning won. He missed Game 4, and the Lightning lost, and in the days after, the Lightning had kept his status a secret. So when Bishop took the ice for the morning skate, reporters watched his every move.

“There’s progress being made,” Bishop said, repeating that line or some variation of it three more times throughout his morning news conference. He refused to go into any further detail.

But the Blackhawks seemed to sense that he was weakened. They started the game firing shots from a distance, testing Bishop’s mobility. Maybe they could tire him, or catch him off guard. They made nine shots on goal in the first five minutes. They kept firing, kept pressuring Bishop and it led to an easy goal.

The sequence started when the Blackhawks dumped the puck into the offensive zone, trying to create more pressure. The play seemed innocuous enough. Patrick Sharp was the only Blackhawk there to give chase, and only Victor Hedman was there between Sharp and the puck, looking over his shoulder, shielding him.

But Bishop had wandered away from the crease, about 30 feet from the net, in an attempt to clear the puck. Bishop saw Hedman and yelled at him, thinking he would back off, but Hedman could not hear him over the crowd. They collided, and Bishop lay in a heap. Sharp collected the puck and scored on the empty net.

Bishop lay on the ice, then slowly got up. When he retreated to the crease, a Lightning staff member came to check on him. Yet Bishop stayed in.

“I feel better,” Bishop said after the game, without elaborating.

This was how goals have been scored most of the series. The games are so tight that no star has had a breakout game — just hustle plays and hard-earned bounces. Neither Steven Stamkos nor Patrick Kane has scored; Tyler Johnson and Jonathan Toews have one goal apiece. Frustration seems to be mounting.

“We’ve been right there,” Stamkos said, sitting at his locker with a cut on his nose. “It’s just, we’ve got to push a little deeper and find a way.”

All that physicality that was choking off the open ice also cost the Lightning one of their better scorers. In the first period, after Crawford turned the puck over to Nikita Kucherov and left the net empty, he dived into Kucherov’s path, sent him flying into the post headfirst, and saved a goal. But Kucherov did not return.

“It wasn’t a smart play,” Crawford said. “But luckily it just didn’t go in the net.”

Even without Kucherov, the Lightning played with more urgency in the second period and worked the Blackhawks’ defense, until Jason Garrison made a cross-ice pass through five tired defenders, to Valtteri Filppula, who ripped home a goal.

Once Vermette scored two minutes into the third, the Blackhawks sank back into their zone as the Lightning crashed the net. Each time they were turned away by Crawford, their desperation grew. When the final whistle blew, that pent-up energy led to a skirmish. Then the Blackhawks huddled around Crawford to celebrate.

Asked if he would be ready for Game 6, Bishop said, “Hope so.”

GAME OF THRONES 509 Dragons Dance People Burn

jon snow bringing home wildings game of thrones 2015 509Almost perfect. That’s how I would describe “The Dance of Dragons.” The next to last episode of Game of Thrones for 2015 showed the dark side of war with Stannis making a terrible sacrifice. Then the show turns around and shows the glory of another leader when Dany made her greatness evident to a stadium full of people.

I was wrong to doubt the deviousness of Ramsay Bolton. His 20 men wreaked havoc on Stannis’ already suffering army. Burning up the food storages and using fire to create chaos was brilliant. That move should break Stannis and company. At the very least it made Baratheon consider using the nuclear option, sacrificing his own kid.

We didn’t get much from Jon Snow and the Wildlings this week. They did make it back to the Wall as they were allowed to pass through the tunnel. The shot of the giant compared to the normal sized men was very cool. Dude is immense!

Stannis sends his right hand man Davos back to the Wall to get help. He needs Davos to convince Jon Snow of the urgency of the situation. Stannis also needs this good man to be out of the way when he sends his daughter to the wood stack. The army is a hot mess with lots of coughing among the starving warriors. Princess Shireen is reading “A Dance of Dragons,” as Davos tells her goodbye with a small gift he has carved. This man tried to save the girl by offering to take her with him back to Castle Black, but Stannis would not allow it.

Not much happened in Dorne this week. Jaime and Bronn are freed by the merciful Doran Martell. There are conditions, including the engagement between Trystane Martell and Myrcella Baratheon remaining intact. Also Trystane will take Oberyn’s old slot on the Small Council. These Martell’s should know better than send their people to King’s Landing by now!

Arya gets sideways in her training when she fails to kill her target, the insurance guy from last week. She is derailed by the despicable Meryn Trant who is there with Mace Tyrell to visit the Iron Bank reps. Arya is still Arya as she cannot let go of the past, or her hit list. I imagine next week will be the last episode for Mr. Trant as Arya maybe transforms into a faceless prostitute in order to take his soul.
game of thrones shireen gets burned stake 2015We knew it was coming, but little Princess Shireen’s march to the burning stake was a tough watch. Stannis had told her abut destiny and how the world sometimes forces a man’s hand. He had asked her to forgive him, but she didn’t understand at the time. How an army of fighting men could watch a little girl being burned alive by Milesandre is beyond me. How can they follow a “king” that would sacrifice his own daughter to gain power?
shireen tied to stake game of thrones dance of dragons 2015The biggest scene of the episode and most likely this season was during the Great Games. The fighting pits were on the biggest stage and HBO pulled it off brilliantly. The fighting wasn’t as smooth as we have seen before, but it was not bad. Jorah just seemed clunky and slower than before. Could be the greyscale I guess.

Daenerys is seated front and center of course, along with her inner circle, Tyrion included now. Her new hubby is suspiciously late and is harassed by Daario the entire time. Tyrion is disgusted by these games and doesn’t hide his displeasure. He says the world has enough death to go around without him having to view it in his leisure time.

Dany was surprised to see Jorah back in the fighting world as he spoke directly to her in old Valyrian. Dany’s hubby tries to interrupt but is quickly told to STFU by Daario. Daenerys could have stopped the fighting anytime she wanted and pardoned Jorah, but she let the fights go forward. Jorah was nearly killed at one point, but she still let it continue. Jorah finally wins the contest with all the other gladiators fallen. He sees something in the stands then hurls a spear in Dany’s direction….killing a member of The Sons of the Harpy. The Harpy was just before attacking Dany while everyone focused on the pits. Jorah saved Khaleesi once again. Yes he was a spy, but her protector he has always been. She finally forgave Jorah as she took his hand when he climbed up to lead her to safety as all hell broke loose in the stadium. Great to see his redemption.

Dany’s new spouse was stabbed to death by a SOTH member so even if he was in on the revolt, it did him no good. The crowd was in full panic as Harpy guys slit throats, stabbed many Unsullied, and generally ruined the Great Games. The killing was supposed to stay in the pits, not spread to the stands in a Ron Artest type scenario. Dany should try and sell the remaining members of the Unsullied army or at least let them be an offensive force only. They are horrible at defensive tactics, as they nearly let their Queen get whacked in the most public place possible.

It looked like Dany and crew may not make it out alive. They were encircled by the SOTH and Khaleesi closed her eyes as she realized it was just about over. Once again she had a card that no other leader has…..a full grown, man eating, fire setting dragon! Drogon came roaring out of the sky spitting fire and landed on the floor of the stadium to save his mother. Drogon chewed up and spat out a SOTH dude before setting several more on fire. The surviving fans that came to the Great Games got their money’s worth seeing this giant dragon wreak hot havoc.

Drogon did get hurt as the Harpies tossed a few spears his way. Daenerys pulled one out of his back then stood in his face as he roared at her fiercely. She IS the Mother of Dragons, unafraid. She finally climbed on the back of Drogon, commanding him to fly away out of danger. She is on the back of the dragon flying out of the stadium with the great pyramid in the background and Tyrion looking up at her astounded. The little man now knows what Jorah was talking about when he was forever changed by seeing Dany walk out of the fire with the baby dragons.

I loved the final scene. It was something that you would expect to see in a blockbuster movie, not part of a weekly series. The gladiator fighting could have been better in my opinion and I don’t like the fact that Dany just left the place. Maybe her inner circle needed more help for all she knew. And I certainly do not want to spend all next week or the off season wondering where she and Drogon have gone!

These Harpies are some sneaky rat bastards that are impossible to deal with like a normal opponent. You can’t line up and fight them like a regular army. They just randomly show up and create chaos. It may take turning Meereen into dust to solve this problem like Dany mentioned before the fighting started up.

We have just one episode left for Game of Thrones this season. I hate that it goes so fast, but that’s what happens with a show this good. I will be doing a season wrap up after next week’s recap so be sure to catch that as well.

Will there be another Silk Road on the deep dark web?

0

silk road gone but will return 2015 tech deep webThe US government through the FBI has imposed a massive crackdown on online illegal drug markets within the Dark aka Deep Web. The best known of these was Silk Road, an online black market best known for selling illegal drugs, fake IDs and other illegal items except for stolen credit cards, weapons and child porn. Its owner, Ross William Ulbricht also known as Dread Pirate Roberts was arrested and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Rather harsh for an internet entrepreneur – of drugs.

The name Silk Road can hardly be associated with illegal drugs but it was named after a lucrative trade route between China and the Middle East. The site traded using bitcoins so the money trail would be hard to trace. The site started small in 2011 but later became as lucrative as its namesake trade route. So lucrative and popular that it got the internets and later the government’s attention. One by one, dealers in the site were later traced and arrested until finally it was shut down on October 2013 with the arrest of its founder Ross William Ulbricht.

Back in the day, pirates were hanged but Dread Pirate Roberts got the next best thing, life imprisonment for effectively mass-marketing illegal drugs. The government wanted to make an example for others who plan to fill his shoes. After Silk Road was shut down, as an act of defiance, Silk Road 2.0 was launched which was run by the first Silk Road’s former administrators. It too was shut down on November 2014 after the arrest of its last administrator Blake Benthall aka Defcon.

Other sites in the dark web that deal in drugs include Atlantis, Silk Road’s direct competitor which shut down their site just before Silk Road was shut down by the FBI; Evolution which became more popular than Silk Road which dealt in more illegal items also abruptly shut down their sites. Atlantis and Evolution took off with some of their users bitcoins in the process. Russian Anonymous Marketplace or RAMP is still in operation in Russia which is out of the FBI’s reach and there’s also a Silk Road 3.0 formerly known as Diabolus Market. What actually did the Silk Road in was its own popularity. It somehow became viral on the upper web and people looking to get their fix found their way to it, to the Dark Web.

guns bought on deep web silk road 2015The dark web is like the vast territory beneath our oceans, dark and unexplored and for those who don’t know what they’re doing, dangerous. It’s an internet beneath what we know as the internet and its home to the sale of illegal items such as drugs, guns, stolen financial and personal information and child pornography. It’s also the place for file sharing, communications between political dissidents, racists, hate groups, supremacists, and other forms of deviant behavior. Basically anything not accepted in mainstream society can be found and discussed in the dark web. It’s also the avenue for hiring mercenaries, and assassins. It’s that dangerous. Like the proverbial ice berg, the dark web or the deep web may even be just as large as the internet that we know of. Accessing the dark web requires special software and specific network configurations that make use of supported but not-so-used protocols. Known ways to access the dark web include TOR (The Onion Router), I2P (Invisible Internet Project), Freenet, OneSwarm, Retroshare and Tribler.

Because drug and arms dealing are very lucrative markets, there may be more sites like Silk Road that may be just as large or even larger but not as popular. The problem with notoriety is best described by villain Aldritch Killian in Iron Man 3.

“Anonymity, Tony. Thanks to you, it’s been my mantra ever since, right? You simply rule from behind the scenes. Because the second you give evil a face, a Bin Laden, a Gaddafi, the Mandarin…you hand the people a target.”

…which is basically what happened to Silk Road when a 2011 article from American blog site Gawker was published. Silk Road’s competitor Atlantis even advertised through YouTube, and Silk Road 2 through Twitter.

If there’s one lesson that could be learned after Silk Road’s downfall, is to avoid attracting attention. There may already be one or several successors to Silk Road operating in the Dark Web, their users briefed in making sure they clean up their tracks through higher security and better encryption. But the Dark Web is a large and dangerous place. We won’t really know unless we dive in.

Violet Chachki & Katya Take Top Awards For RUPAUL’s DRAG RACE

The RuPaul’s Drag Race season finale for season seven took place in a Downtown Los Angeles auditorium. Previously eliminated drag queens from this season appeared at the finale. RuPaul came on stage and brought all the drag queens out at once.

Ginger, Violet and Pearl then had to lip sync songs that were written specifically for each of them. Michelle Visage said Ginger’s performance was great and her co-judges agreed. Ginger then answered questions asked to her by some of the members of the audience in the auditorium. John Waters had recorded a message for Ginger Minj saying he was behind her. Ginger also got a prerecorded message from her dad stating he was proud of her for everything she has accomplished. Ginger said she wanted to be part of the legacy of RuPaul’s Drag Race winners.

Pearl then hit the stage for her lip sync performance and Michelle Visage said when Pearl came into the competition she had an attitude but had become lovable since then. Ross Matthews told Pearl people really liked her and that she had come a long way. Pearl then took questions from the audience as well. She said she wanted people to think she is unique and talented. Pearl also got a prerecorded message from her family telling her they loved her, were proud of her and wished her all the luck in the world. Pearl said if she won the season she would probably buy wigs with the money.

Violet then came onstage for her lip sync performance. Michelle Visage said she loves Violet and Carson said she always presented herself well on stage. She told RuPaul she used to sew her own uniforms when she went to catholic school. She also said she had decided to live her life for her and no one else. Violet then got a congratulatory message from her mother and another one from her father; both said they were proud of her and loved her. Violet said it would mean everything to her if she became the next winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The other drag queens eliminated earlier in the season caught up with each other and rehashed parts of this season’s competition. Sasha Belle said that she thought she knew the show well enough to win it, but then she realized every season of the show is different and that is why she was eliminated earlier in the competition.

Jasmine said meeting Kennedy was the most important part of the show for her. She also said she was inspired by Patti Labelle. RuPaul then showed Jasmine a video message Labelle recorded just for her.

Mrs. Kasha Davis said she felt the younger girls on the show had a sense of entitlement but that she learned a lot from them. She was then asked about Mr. Kasha Davis, who was pointed out in the audience.

Kandy Ho said she was thinking of moving away from Puerto Rico, where she had lived since she was 10 years old. Jaiydenn said she didn’t realize they would be locked up so much throughout the course of the season. She also said that her mom and brother knew she was a drag queen already but didn’t know she was gay. Jaiydenn then got to watch a video message from her mother who said she loved Jaiydenn based on who she is and not what she does. She said now her family could finally get to know the real Jaiydenn. Miss Fame then had a live chicken brought out on stage after RuPaul asked her if she could speak chicken. Miss Fame said she could because she had grown up on a farm with only chickens to talk to.

Trixie then did an impression of RuPaul right in front of her and was jokingly told to sashay away. Katya said she was terrified through the whole season because RuPaul made her nervous. She also said she had the feeling RuPaul wanted to kill her during the competition. Katya also said the show had given her higher self -esteem than she had before.

Kennedy talked about how she had a rough childhood with her mother but her mother had come to support her in the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race. RuPaul recommended viewers go see Kennedy in concert if they could. Kennedy was asked who she would nominate to come back to the show for an all- star season and she said Katya.

The season 7 Miss Congeniality Award was presented to Katya; who also won $5,000 as a result and RuPaul thanked everyone for voting. Ginger, Pearl and Violet then reappeared onstage. RuPaul then announced the winner for the season is Violet. Violet took to the stage to thunderous applause and tears of joy from her parents.

Kennedy Takes Flight From RUPAUL’s DRAG RACE 712

kennedy davenport eliminated from rupauls drag race 712 images 2015This week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race had Ginger Minj sad and walking into the work room saying it just isn’t the same with Katya gone. She also said the heat was on and it was going to explode.

Violet said it felt awesome to walk into the work room knowing the remaining drag queens are the final four. The drag queens then found out that this week they would have to act out a RuPaul music video. Candi Cayne then came out to work with the drag queens on their choreography. Ginger Minj said the part of the music video making her nervous was the dancing but that she wasn’t going to let it get the best of her this time. Candi Cayne told Violet not to psych herself out while rehearsing for the music video.

RuPaul then asked Kennedy Davenport about auditioning for the show and he said he had kept putting it off until after his father passed away two years ago. She then asked him what winning would mean to him and he said that everything in his life was a struggle and that his sister has struggled with retardation and that winning the show would be a reward to him for taking care of her since their father’s death.

Violet said she was just going to enjoy being in the top four in the competition for this season after Ginger Minj asked her what her approach was to avoiding elimination at this point in the competition.

RuPaul asked Ginger Minj if she had any allies at home and she admitted her father left Ginger and her mother to be with his girlfriend instead. She said her whole life she felt like she didn’t know her father and that she was tormented growing up. She also said she hoped her father was proud of her and RuPaul told Ginger Minj she was proud of her.

Violet told RuPaul she imagined winning the show as soon as she auditioned for it. RuPaul told Violet she was really special and that others would take their whole life to get where Violet is now.

Pearl told RuPaul she was surprised she became shy during the competition. RuPaul asked Pearl what she was like as a kid. Pearl said she had dealt with mental, physical and psychological torment and that she didn’t open up to other people much. RuPaul told her there had been a huge transformation in her throughout the competition.

While rehearsing for the music video Pearl struggled to succeed. She was having a hard time keeping her wig secure. Violet said she was trying so hard during rehearsal she forget her choreography.

The drag queens then had to film their acting scenes for the music video. They worked with a real director to polish their acting techniques. Pearl said Kennedy was an amazing performer by her biggest weakness was her short term memory. Ginger Minj said Violet was flat lining trying to play her character in the video.

Kennedy said Violet had been full of herself since day one of the competition and that Violet was too young to be competing, which Ginger Minj agreed with. Pearl said Violet had changed since the beginning of the season and that she now listened more than she did in the beginning.

RuPaul then presented the drag queens for the runway walk. Kennedy came out in a multi colored dress and matching shoes. Violet came out dressed in a black pantsuit with a green sleeveless top. Ginger Minj came out in a fringe and rhinestone dress and made sure the judges could see all of it. Pearl was told her outfit looked like it was from the “Dee Snider Intimate Collection.”

RuPaul told Kennedy she had become a fierce drag queen and asked all of the drag queens what they would say to their child self and Kennedy said it was OK to be different than the other kids. Violet’s answer to the question was that she would tell her child self to be more patient with everyone, especially her parents. Ginger Minj’s answer was when it feels like the whole world is against you, you can be a friend to yourself and that throughout life you would have to deal with bigoted people. Pearl’s answer to the question was a warning about entering the toughest years of life.

The judges then gave critiques. Michelle Visage said Ginger Minj’s dancing was good this time. She was also told she performed beautifully in the music video. Ginger Minj was told her characters were the most flushed out and she was praised for handing a wig mishap very well. Pearl was told that she was a weirdo but she pushed herself out of her comfort zone this week. She was told she looked beautiful and Michelle Visage was proud of her. All four drag queens then stated why they should be the one to move on in the competition. Kennedy said she and Ginger were the only ones ready for this competition and that Pearl and Violet didn’t have much to offer. Pearl said she had looked for validation from this show and that her fellow contestants represented the future. Ginger Minj said Violet has the shortest temper she has ever seen. She also criticized Pearl for almost walking away from the competition. Pearl said she busted her butt for everything she has and that she had more to show America.

RuPaul and the other judges then discussed each drag queen. They said Kennedy’s dancing was great and she is a glamorous and hard worker. They said Violet gave it all she got and did some great singing and acting. They said Ginger Minj was an all- around great performer. They said Pearl fought her way through the competition and she had a certain charm.

After the lip sync competition among the remaining four drag queens RuPaul then announced that Kennedy Davenport was being sent home from the competition.

Matt Damon’s THE MARTIAN Latest Trailer Continues Exciting Fans

0

matt damon martian trailer lands well 2015Book and Matt Damon fans rejoice! Another bestselling book is making its way to the screen, but this time it’s something we all can be proud of (unlike 50 Shades of Grey becoming a massive success). The bestselling Sci-Fi novel The Martian is hitting the theater as a big screen adaption. As many fellow book lovers couldn’t be more excited about the movie, I also rejoiced. It’s a smart, action filled humorous book that should only be read by those that don’t want to immediately check out during the reading process. The only thing that makes me nervous about the movie’s release is that the adaption is being directed by Ridley Scott.

You know the guy that recently produced the completely white washed film Exodus based off of the story of Moses? His movies often sacrifice genuine great content for potential big box office numbers. And although white washing didn’t do him any favors in Exodus, The Martian is a totally different gravy train. There’s much potential for dumbing down the movie to fit the masses.

matt damon stranded on mars trailer martian 2015The trailer does leave me hopeful however, as the major events in the book do seem to take place in the film. In the preview, Astronaut Mark Watney is thought to be dead by NASA when he is separated from his crew during a horrible storm on Mars. As a result, he is left behind. Surprisingly however, Mark is not dead. Now, he’s alone on a hostile planet with no way to get back to earth.

The good thing he’s a highly intelligent engineer. I mean we wouldn’t send a complete moron to mars after all, right? With barely-there supplies, Mark must draw from deep down inside to pull off all the intelligence and spirit he can muster in order to stay alive. When Mark gets things slightly under control, he is able to signal to Earth that he’s alive.

Now his crew is faced with what seems like the impossible mission of suiting up and going back to save Mark. Will the crew get back to Mars in time to save him or will politics get in the way? Mark might not be able to survive by himself on an alien planet forever.

matt damon shirtless martian movie 2015The film looks to be the typical style of Ridley Scott which is usually big, glossy and loud with how many millions of dollars they’ve poured in to it. It’s a really intelligent read. A large majority of the movie going audience that wants to think while they watch would enjoy this brainy novel. It’s got a lot of heart and doesn’t go down as simply another nerdy, dry book about a failed mission to mars.

Mat Damon really does have everything it takes to play Mark. His boyishly handsome  appearance and warm sense of humor is exactly what is needed to pull off that character. Seeing Kristin Wiig in a Sci-Fi role should be…interesting. A great supporting cast is rounded off with Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The film has a release date of November 25, 2015.

NINA FOREVER’s Messed Up Fairy Tale Trailer

0

nina forever movie poster images 2015Nina Forever is being hailed by the movie’s website as a “fucked up fairy tale.” Ok horror fans, how can you not be drawn to a film with a description like that? The film follows an awkward girl named Holly who wants to save Rob’s life with whom she works. Rob is just as strange as she is. They both work a dead-end job at a supermarket (although Holly’s training to be a paramedic). Rob is still angry and depressed over the death of his girlfriend Nina. He’s even tried to kill himself, but Holly thinks she has what it takes to save Rob’s life.

Their relationship gets deep and on the first night they decide to make love, something so crazy happens my mouth hit the floor when I saw it! His ex, dead girlfriend pops up in bed with them as a bloody and tangled mess! This is not enough to make Holly run. She’s determined to help Rob move on from his past. Holly will do whatever it takes to stay with Rob and make him whole again. Even if that means having a dead ex-girlfriend in their bed every time they make love.

The movie is an obvious metaphor of how not moving on from a past relationship can greatly damage a new one, but damn do they do it in such a bold fashion! The scene where the girlfriend appears in their bed for the first time is seen in the trailer in all its morbid and shocking style. The corpse is naked, bloody and talking! In fact, Nina the corpse does not have a hard time telling Holly she is not Rob’s “ex” girlfriend. I’m pretty sure most women would throw their hands up and say “hey, you win! I’m out.”

nina forever movie trailer fairy tale images 2015I’m not sure why the film makers are calling this a “fairy tale” at all. I can’t think of any Grimm’s Fairy Tale where a woman woke up from the dead to terrorize her living boyfriend away from having sex. Maybe the director is trying to build their own dark fairy tale and that’s pretty cool too.

The trailer reminded me immediately of the movie Excision ( a horrific movie about a girl who’s obsessed with performing surgery and goes to disgusting lengths to do so). Excision in all it’s blood and gore (it featured a scene of a girl having sex with a boy as her period blood gushed all over him) made my stomach churn and I barely got to the end. I vowed to never see that film again and I haven’t.

Nina Forever gave me the same dirty feeling, but it really feels like worth a try. Early reviews are very positive. Although the release date is mentioned as March 14, 2015, I’m guessing that was for the film festival circuit.

Hopefully, it will a get a DVD, VOD and On Demand release date soon!

THE STRAIN’S Kevin Durand Trailer: DARK WAS THE NIGHT

0

dark was the night poster images 2015Dark Was The Night has released its official trailer for what seems to be an atmospheric and performance driven new horror film. The film was released on a small festival circuit in 2014. The film’s plot line involves a small town named Maiden Woods who’s set in to a panic by a very mysterious force. There’s a mysterious force hiding out in the forest surrounding the town. While no one can figure out what’s happening, people continue to get attacked by the unknown. Sheriff Paul Shields (played by actor Kevin Durand, star of FX show The Strain) is strugglig to overcome his own troubles while trying to save his town by an entity.

The trailer has a dark, cold feel to it that’s very enticing. Too many horror films lately have a glossy, Hollywood look to it. Since the film has not had a widespread release yet, it’s safe to say that it is most likely an independent film. That’s also what the film has going on its favor. While not all independent films are great, you certainly have a better chance of them being better when they’re not Hollywood produced.

The trailer features many jump scares which has me wondering if this is smart horror or just horror that depends on making you suddenly jump out of your seat. That’s not scary, that’s just lazy. Giving the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt, the film does have a 7.5/10 rating on IMBD and that’s a touch crowd to please. While their are jump scares in the trailer they’re all smashed together so you can’t get a real sense of their placement in the movie.

There does seem to be some gore spread lightly throughout. Gore in a movie like this can be highly effective to the senses. I mean even as a horror fan, I still squirm at the sight of fresh oozing blood.

dark was the night horror movie images 2015The film takes place in a small, cold and grey town. That gives it a huge atmospheric advantage. It gives the movie a real sense of isolation and claustrophobia. With dark woods surrounding every corner, could you lay your head down at night knowing an evil creature is out there to kill you? The movie scenes seem to be shot in either grey or black which gives you a constant feeling of literally being “left out in the dark.”

Many movie goers say the movie gives them the feeling of the movie Jaws, but instead they’re trading ocean for land. That feeling of always being surrounded by something you can’t escape is enough to send a deep chill through anyone’s bones.

From some of the festival reviews, viewers said the ending is a chilling climax. An epic ending can always save even the most boring of movies. Hopefully, we’ll get a wide release date sometime soon.
