‘The Walking Dead’ 604 Here’s Not Here & A New Hero Emerges

the walking dead 604 heres not here 2015 imagesIf the first three episodes of The Walking Dead were just too action packed for you, then you were in luck with episode number four. I like Morgan’s character, but I didn’t need an entire show dedicated to showing how he evolved into the peace loving Aikido practitioner he is today.

Some flashbacks during a normal episode would have filled in the blanks nicely. Obviously I was not a huge fan of this episode, and I’m actually into Zen philosophy and love the martial arts. I can imagine the majority of other viewers were even less interested this week than me.

But maybe I’m wrong, fans love Lennie James, who plays Morgan.

In a vacuum, this was not a bad WD episode. Coming after the first three editions of season six, though? It was like being on a roller coaster and some drunk operator accidentally hit the emergency stop button.

We start out with Morgan being completely deranged. He’s killing Walkers and dragging their bodies into a pile for a bonfire. The guy also has to kill a couple of humans that are tracking him. They were up to no good, so he had little choice. He had to “clear” the area.

Morgan eventually wound up at a great cabin in the woods that looked very livable. He got KO’d by a Zen Master named Eastman, who just wanted him to drop his gun. Eastman is a former forensic psychologist who used to determine if criminals were rehabilitated or not, before they were up for parole.

Eastman is also very skilled with a kendo stick, and he winds up teaching Morgan some Aikido skills. This was after he locked Morgan in a cage inside his cabin. He also offered him a book called, “The Art of Peace.”

This guy Eastman was a pretty interesting character. His philosophy of not killing is where Morgan got his code. He makes a compelling argument about how humans are not built to kill. “We have no fangs, no armor, no claws, etc.” He says people need people and that we are all connected as a species.

This is a fine philosophy for judging criminals already behind bars. The world is safe from them as long as they are locked away. But the same ideas don’t work when you are face to face out in the open with dangerous people like the Wolves, Terminites, or the Governor.

The “create peace” philosophy is a nice thought with intelligent, enlightened people around you. It simply doesn’t work with savages, which are the biggest part the human population remaining in Rick’s world.

Eastman understood exactly what was going on in Morgan’s head. He could not escape the death of his wife and young son. The moments of their death were upon him every second of every day, and he could not get away from the thoughts.

Eastman told the story of a prisoner named Dallas that he kept in prison as he saw he was truly evil. The prisoner eventually escaped prison and killed Eastman’s entire family. This broke the psychologist, much like Morgan’s tragedies broke him mentally. Eastman told Morgan how he built the cage in the cabin for Dallas and had intended to watch him starve to death.

Morgan asked if he went through with it and noticed that Eastman was good at “redirecting,” when he only answered that “all life is precious.” Eastman did indeed starve the killer to death as we saw Dallas’ name on one of the posts at the Walker Cemetery at the end of the show.

Eventually, it went bad for Eastman as he ended up bitten by a stray Walker when he saved Morgan as he stood in a trance like state. Morgan did warn him the campsite was no place to practice Aikido.

Of course, Eastman had to be shot in the head before he turned, so his character was one and done. It was a slow burn this week, but the ending was interesting.

Morgan’s flashback to Eastman was actually him telling the story to the Wolves member who attacked him in a home at the end of episode two. Morgan is trying to convince this wicked man that he can change just as Morgan did under the teachings of Eastman.

The Wolfpack guy is not keen on the idea and mentions he is going to try and kill Morgan and anyone else in Alexandria he can. This includes women and children. Morgan lets him live and just locks him inside the home. Bad plan of course.

I get the philosophy of peace. I admire people who are non-violent. I just fail to see how that is supposed to work when facing monsters. Even Eastman said we are to take care of ourselves just like we take care of others.

Morgan is not taking care of himself by allowing a killer to remain in his city. He is not taking care of the other innocents in Alexandria either. He is choosing this savage’s life over everyone else when the man is openly talking about the murders he plans to commit!

I wish Morgan’s philosophy would work. His world would be a better place, even post-apocalypse. The peaceful philosophy is just too risky for those that deserve a peaceful world. The children of Alexandria should not have to suffer because Morgan wants to spread the good news of Zen to people who attacked the city once already.

Rick’s brutal philosophy is hard to accept, but it’s more likely to keep the real peace loving folks alive than Morgan’s ideals. Morgan’s actions are going to let evil gain momentum, not perpetuate peace.

champions league match day 4 real madrid vs parin saint 2015 soccer imagesIn one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the fourth match day of the Champions League, Real Madrid will play host to reigning French champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night. The two sides are odds-on favourites to advance from the group, but will be vying for finishing as group winners to potentially avoid strong opposition in the round of 16 clashes. They played out a scoreless draw in the first leg at the Parc des Princes and fans will be hoping to see some goals at the Bernabeu from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Shakhtar Donetsk will play Malmo in the other match of Group A.

Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw at the Arena Khimki against CSKA Moscow in the last round and they will be hosting the Russian outfit at Old Trafford, where the Red Devils will attempt to grab all three points. Meanwhile, group toppers Wolfsburg will be up against reigning Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven.

In Group C, Atletico Madrid will make the long trip to Kazakhstan to face FC Astana, and having registered a 4-0 win in the home leg, the Spaniards will be eager to repeat a similar thrashing. Benfica will be up against reigning Turkish Super Lig champions Galatasaray.

Borussia Monchengladbach will play host to reigning Italian champions and 2015 Champions League runners-up Juventus while Sevilla will face Manchester City at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, and Unai Emery’s men will be eager to make up for the lost chances in the first leg as they attempt to seal all three points from the encounter.

Reigning Spanish and European champions, Barcelona will face Belarusian giants BATE Borisov at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night. And the Catalan outfit will be favourites to grab all three points from the clash. Roma will be up against Bundesliga opposition Bayer Leverkusen and the Italians will be eager to seal their first win in Europe this term.

Bayern Munich were handed their first defeat of the ongoing campaign by Arsenal in their last Champions League game at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s men will be keen to assert their dominance when they host the Gunners at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. The Germans look to be amongst the strongest contenders for the Champions League this season and they will want to show their credentials at home. Meanwhile, Olympiacos will be up against Dinamo Zagreb.

Reigning English champions Chelsea have endured a nightmare of a campaign so far and they will play host to Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Pressure is rising on Jose Mourinho and a win over the Ukrainians might buy him some more time at the club. Maccabi Tel Aviv will face Porto.

Belgium outfit Gent are set to face Spanish giants Valencia on Wednesday while French outfit Lyon will be up against Russian giants Zenit Saint Petersburg, for whom Hulk has been in the great vein of form.

La Liga Week 10 Soccer Review

0

la liga week 10 soccer review 2015 imagesWeek 10 of La Liga began with Atletico Madrid’s trip to the Estadio Riazor against Deportivo La Coruna. The 2014 Spanish champions took the lead in the encounter courtesy of a goal from Tiago, but the Galicians grabbed an equalising goal and took home a precious point. The 2000 Spanish champions have enjoyed a good start to the season and are lying ninth in the table after collecting five draws and two wins from their first ten games of the season so far.

Isco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jese Rodriguez scored a goal each in the first half of their game against Las Palmas, and it appeared that the newly promoted outfit will be handed an embarrassing thrashing at the Santiago Bernabeu, but they held their own in the second half and managed to keep Rafael Benitez’s men at bay to come home with a 3-1 defeat. Hernan grabbed the solitary goal for the visitors. Los Blancos are looking great contenders for the league title, and it will take some doing for Los Rojiblancos and Barcelona to stop them from winning the title this season. La Liga for sure is looking to be a humdinger of a title race this term.

Paco Alcacer, Sofiane Feghouli and Zakaria Bakkali grabbed a goal apiece to help Valencia grab all three points against city rivals Levante and Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have now risen to seventh in the table as a consequence.

Mario Gaspar and Cedric Bakambu struck once apiece in either half for Villarreal against Sevilla to help the Yellow Submarine grab all three points from their encounter against Unai Emery’s men. The Sevillistas enjoyed a great campaign last term but are struggling to maintain any kind of consistency this season. They will be hosting Manchester City in a Champions League game in the midweek.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Barcelona against Getafe while Neymar doubled the lead in the second half to help the Catalans to a 2-0 defeat of the Madrid side. Lionel Messi is still out of first team action for the Blaugrana, but the Uruguayan and the Brazilian have masterfully shouldered the goalscoring burden in the absence of the Argentine maestro while Sergi Roberto has been exceptional in midfield and assisted both the goals on Saturday. The reigning Spanish champions welcomed Andres Iniesta after his injury layoff.

Iago Aspas grabbed a double for Celta Vigo as they defeated Real Sociedad 3-2 which increased the pressure on former Manchester United boss David Moyes as he struggles to save his job at Anoeta.

Meanwhile, Eibar continued their superlative start to the season as they defeated Rato Vallecano 1-0 on Sunday. The Basques are sixth now.

Espanyol and Granada played out a 1-1 draw at the Cornella-El Prat.

Barcelona loanee Alen Halilovic continued his heroics at Sporting Gijon as he netted a 27th-minute goal against Malaga to help his team rise to 12th in the table.

Athletic Bilbao won 3-1 against Real Betis and have moved to eighth.

NCAA College Football Week 9 Winners & Losers

ncaa college football winners losers week 9 2015 imagesIt is almost hard to believe that we are nine weeks into the 2015 college football season. Finally, after two-plus months of play, we get to see the first College Football Playoff rankings. Who will be in the Top Four? Week 9 had a lot to do with how the first poll plays out. Here are the winners and losers from last week.

WINNERS

Did anyone know that Oklahoma State was unbeaten? The Cowboys remained 8-0 with a thrilling 70-53 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday. Trailing 38-28 in the third quarter, Jalen McCleskey returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown and then Raymond Taylor exploded for a 28 yard run to give head coach Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State a 42-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The two teams would combine for 43 points in the final quarter. Wide receiver James Washington, who caught four passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns, scored on a 73-yard pass from QB J.W. Walsh and Ramon Richards returned an interception 59 yards for a score with just six seconds to play to set the final score. The Cowboys face TCU next week in the first of several Big 12 showdowns.

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson accounted for six touchdowns as No. 3 Clemson remained undefeated with a 56-41 win over N.C. State. Watson completed 23-of-30 passes for 383 yards and five scores. He also rushed 14 times for 54 yards and another touchdown. The Tigers are now 8-0 and will likely be one of the top four teams in the College Football Playoff poll when it is released Tuesday.

Miami’s kickoff return team pulled off the unthinkable. Needing a touchdown to win on the game’s final play, the Hurricanes lateraled the ball eight times with five different players touching the ball and in 46 seconds went 97 yards to the end zone to give Miami a 30-27 upset win over No. 22 Duke. Miami’s Corn Elder was the recipient of the final lateral and scored the winning touchdown. It appeared Duke would pull off the win when QB Thomas Sirk scored on a sneak with just six seconds to play. It was a huge win for the Hurricanes who won their first game under interim head coach Larry Scott. Miami, now 5-3, had fired Al Golden after last week’s 58-0 loss to Clemson.

Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds tied the NCAA record for career rushing touchdowns in the Midshipmen’s 29-17 win over South Florida. Reynolds carried 26 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns to bring his career total to 77 tying Wisconsin’s Montee Ball. Reynolds was one of three Navy players to run for over 100 yards on the day. The Middies ran for 428 total yards in the win. Reynolds will have a chance to make history next week when Navy faces No. 16 Memphis in a huge American Athletic Conference matchup.

LOSERS

Minnesota blew a chance to beat rival Michigan and take home the Little Brown Jug. Down 29-26, Gophers QB Mitch Leidner hit Drew Wolitarsky with what appeared to be a touchdown, but the ball was ruled down at the 1-yard line. With just 19 seconds remaining and the clock running, Minnesota shifted into a variety of formations and ultimately saw a Leidner pass fall incomplete. With just two seconds left, the Michigan stuffed Leidner as he tried to score on a quarterback sneak.

Central Florida is now 0-9 after a 52-7 loss to Cincinnati. The Knights are the only 0-9 team in the FBS. Just a few years ago, UCF was playing in a New Year’s Day bowl game. Head coach George O’Leary decided to retire last week, and the Knights defense appeared to do the same. Cincinnati QB Gunner Kiel went 15-for-15 – yes, he completed all of his passes – for 319 yards and five touchdowns. UCF will attempt to avert a 0-12 finish as it faces Tulsa, East Carolina, and South Florida to close the season.

After starting the season 5-0 and entering the AP Top 25 at one point, Cal has lost three straight including Saturday’s 27-21 defeat at the hands of USC. Bears QB Jared Goff considered one of the nation’s top QBs, suffered through another tough game. Goff threw two interceptions and tallied just 272 yards passing in the loss to the Trojans.

Boston College has one of the best defenses in all of college football. They have ranked first in scoring defense at several points during the season. The problem for the Eagles is that their offense is just horrible. BC has not scored more than 17 points against any FBS opponent this year. Saturday, the Eagles produced just 80 yards in the first half on their way to a 26-10 loss to Virginia Tech. Head coach Steve Addazio used his fourth starting quarterback in an attempt to get the offense going. Boston College ranks near the bottom (124th in the nation) in passing yards per game averaging just 108.9.

The Elephant In That South Carolina Classroom

0

the elephant in that south carolina classroom 2015 opinionThere has been a lot said about the assault that happened at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina. Supporters of Officer Ben Fields action have spoken out (and I’ll get to that in a few) and people who believe his actions were out of line have as well. While I have my opinions about the situation, which I will express, I want to point out an aspect of the video that bothered me just as much as the actual assault, and that’s the inaction of the black man in the room.

I don’t know who he is, probably the teacher who called the resource officer or maybe a substitute, which would explain why he couldn’t handle the class. But I do know that he stood there and didn’t say or do anything when that girl was manhandled, and I want to explore what I believe to be the reason.

For years, American people of all races have warned about this country becoming a police state where, according to one definition, the government exercises power arbitrarily through the police. But I argue that black people in America are under a type of police state system, and that is the only reason I can explain why that black man standing in the class seeing that white officer drag that black girl around didn’t do anything. I mean I’m not saying he had to jump in and fight the man off of her but to not say anything? Not even, “Hey man that’s enough, or “You’re hurting her?” That makes me sad. But the fear of retribution is too great for black people to exercise their rights to speak up in the heat of the moment as injustices are happening or go about their business. We have to “be careful” not to sass police, look at them funny or say the wrong thing. If they pull you over, don’t ask why because you may not live long enough to hear the answer. We are policed without cause and without a warrant, and that creates an attitude toward black folks that translates into situations like Spring Valley High School. And it’s a two-way street. Black people are on high alert, which causes tension when approached by law enforcement and the ones in uniform, well a lot of them, for whatever reason, just don’t give care. It then comes down to cause and effect.

This especially rings true for South Carolina where racism is still very much alive and well. Am I saying that Officer Fields is racist? Not necessarily, and his dating of a black woman (allegedly) isn’t the reason why. A lot of time black women who date white men are the most damaging critics of the actions of black people. But that’s a whole other For the Record. Am I saying that Officer Fields more than likely responded to that child the way in which he did because she was black? Yep. SC is known for its racism and according to a young man who receives his education in the state’s school system, as a mixed person (half black, half white) he is told by his guidance counselor to ask no questions, “just do what you are told” if a police officer approaches you. What’s wrong with asking questions?

How can we live in a world where we cannot ask why we are being detained or held, demand humane treatment while in police custody? Aren’t these things that everyone has a right too? Apparently not.

As for the behavior of the student who some argue is the reason all of this happened, I will say this, I do not play when it comes to kids and teenagers being disrespectful. I don’t tolerate it, and if the girl was being as rude as they say and even hit the officer, she was dead wrong. I will never, ever excuse one’s bad behavior, but the punishment for her “crime” far exceeded what’s reasonable. Just as much as I will not condone misconduct, I will never accept the kind of reaction Ben Fields had to the situation as “okay.” Nor should anyone else.

With that, there is a fundamental aspect of all of this that people who support the actions of Officer Fields are missing. And that is if it were their child, their niece, their sister or their friend who was flipped out of her seat and then flung like a rag doll into a wall, they would not think his actions were justified. There wouldn’t be such hateful, and disgusting comments being made about a young teenage victim. I promise you that.

Furthermore, as for the other video that supposedly shows the girl hitting Officer Fields before he used the excessive force that got him fired, that is irrelevant and here is why. If he let the hits of a child get him that riled up to the point were he lost his composure and brutally dealt with the girl, then he didn’t need to be in that position in the first place. When you deal with kids, they push your buttons, and you have to be ready to exact the appropriate response within the scope of your duty. He obviously went outside of that.

Which brings me to my next observation; everything inside of me likes to believe that this situation would have still gone down the way it did had the girl not been black, but my conscious just will not allow me to accept that. Everything inside of me knows that had it been a white girl or girl of another race disobeying, hitting and being disrespectful, he would not have handled her like that. And it all goes back to the way in which black people are policed in this country.

The system in place allows for these situations to happen. So change the system change the outcomes.

Saints Capitalize on Last-Second Giants Punt to Win Historic Shootout

0

new orleans saints capitalize on las second 2015 nfl imagesIf you missed the New York Giants shootout with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, I legitimately feel bad for you. The Saints squeezed out a 52-49 victory in one of the best, most evenly-matched offensive games of all time.

When two Super Bowl MVPs and future Hall of Famers get together, the result isn’t always this fun, but I guess having two of the worst defenses in the NFL definitely helped out. Saints QB Drew Brees finished the day with an insane 511 yards, seven touchdowns (tied for an NFL record), and one interception on 80 percent passing. Eighty. 40 out of 50.

Eli Manning may have been outshined, but not by much. Manning had a day himself with 350 yards and six touchdowns on a little over 73 percent passing.

Of course, great days for Manning and Brees mean great days for the offense as a whole. No surprise for the Giants that Odell Beckham Jr has 130 of those yards and three touchdowns. For the Saints, Marques Colston and tight end Ben Watson both turned back the clock with over 100 yards and a touchdown each.

Basically, the game was full of crazy plays, lead changes, and still a couple of defensive highlights, but the talk of the town right now is Tom Coughlin. Brad Wing’s punt with 20 seconds left set up a 24 yard Marcus Murphy return, a fumble into the hands of Willie Snead (who also had two touchdowns in the game), and then a face mask penalty on Wing which was called, uncalled, and called again. A Kai Forbath 50-yarder then won the game for the Saints in regulation as time expired.

“We kicked in a way that we should’ve had better coverage,” said Coughlin after the game when asked about his decision to punt in bounds.

To be fair to Coughlin, last time he called a punt out of bounds, it didn’t work out anyways. DeSean Jackson and the Miracle at the Meadowlands Pt. II anyone?

“It’s not as easy as you say, punt it out of bounds. We punted it for distance. We got some distance. They would’ve had five seconds left had we covered, they would’ve been beyond midfield and had one play.”

One of the greatest offensive games in league history ends on a special teams blunder.

101 combined points is the third-highest total in NFL history.

NFL Week 8 Full of Heart-Breaking Injuries

0

and then there were none nfl week 8 steve smith injury 2015 imagesand then there were none nfl week 8 steve smith injury 2015 imagesAnd Then There Were None: NFL Week 8 Full of Heart-Breaking Injuries

Wow. Week 8 was bad. I mean, the football wasn’t bad, in fact, New York Giants at New Orleans Saints might have been the best game I’ve ever watched. But the injuries were just horrible. The worst part of the game was a huge part of Sunday’s action. Le’Veon Bell, Matt Forte, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Reggie Bush, and Steve Smith Sr. to name a few. Let’s just take a look at a few of them:

Steve Smith Sr, WR, Baltimore Ravens: Well, there goes my favorite fantasy receiver week in and week out. 82 yards into the matchup with the San Diego Chargers, Smith went down, clutching at this foot. The 36-year-old most reliable weapon of Joe Flacco has been adamant that this would be his final season, and with a torn Achilles, we may have seen the last of the living legend.

On an up note, Smith passed Cris Carter for 10th all-time in receiving yards today. A bitter-sweet end to a career that could very well end up in Canton one day.

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers: Here’s the good news for those that saw the ugly injury in the Steelers-Cincinnati Bengals matchup—early reports say that the ACL is fine and that it is more likely just an ugly MCL sprain. Bell will more than likely miss a couple of weeks, however, which is horrible news for the Steelers who just got QB Ben Roethlisberger back. Bell is one of the top backs in the league, so the injury isn’t exactly great for the NFL in general.

Matt Forte, RB, Chicago Bears: Forte was able to walk to the locker room on his own, but a knee injury never bodes well for a running back. Forte has been the Bears biggest offensive asset this season (as he usually tends to be) and was averaging over 24 touches per game through last week. In other words, the Bears will have to chance nearly a third of their offensive game plan if Forte has to miss any extended amount of time.

Heroes & Zeros: Change Org & BillBoard North West

0

This week in Heroes and Zeros, there is a petition to put the Raven Symoné mess to rest and an attention whoring magazine with inappropriate tweets for North West.

heroes zeros change org for raven symone 2015 opinionHero- Change.org Petition to Fire Raven Symoné

There are no words for how happy I was to see this and the reason stems from the fact that Raven Symoné is not a real representation of black people. Period. I can’t really put it in any other terms. Yes, the change.org petition demanding Barbara Walters to fire her from The View has gotten close to 100,000 signatures, and it’s because people are tired of sitting back and watching this woman make a fool of herself and make a fool of the black community.

The woman who started the petition, Che Scott- Heron, lives in the UK and hit the nail on the head as to the reason for the petition- Raven Symoné is a joke. I am more than confident that I will never agree with or support anything she does. I don’t trust the former child star, and I believe she thinks she is better than other people from whom she tries so hard to distance herself.

The petition and Scott-Heron are Heroes because change will never come unless those affected by people and issues stand up and take the first step in making things happen. Now, does the petition automatically mean that The View will get rid of Raven? No. But what it does do is let’s them and others know that black people are tired of the bum ass representations that are on TV. Yes, there are other women on other daily talk shows that conduct themselves with respect concerning their “people” but Raven is young and for the sake of ratings I am sure, allowed to say whatever she wants without censorship and that is bad for black people.

And this is why is say that; black people get so much criticism for being destructive, negative, violent and lazy that when we stand up in the ways available to us to express how we feel about a situation, that needs to be recognized and commended as well.

So yes, the change.org petition to remove Raven Symoné from the view is a great hero and one that I hope continues to win.

heroes zeros billboard north west 2015 opinionZero-Billboard

This week, Billboard, the music magazine, that tracks the popularity of songs in different genre’s is this week’s zero for two reasons.

First of all, they used a picture of North West to get attention on Twitter. It would not have been so bad if they had done it in an innocent kid-appropriate way, but they didn’t. They used a picture of the two-year-old licking a lollipop while her mother is holding her and captioned it, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” There are no words so communicate how outrageous and disgusting this was of Billboard and of course, Twitter went in on them about it. How dare they try to cause shock and awe by insinuating that this little girl (who is a cutie by the way) knows how to use her tongue in the same manner in which her mother does or did in the sex tape that made her famous? That was a desperate move that I just don’t understand.

The other reason for their zero status is because they tried to explain away their actions and pin it on us for taking it the way in which most people did. They insulted not only a little girl who can’t fend for herself but our intelligence too as people who know a load of crap when we see it.  They tweeted,

“We apologize for the tweet involving North West. The caption was about her comments to paparazzi. The suggestion some see was not intended.”

What they are saying with this statement is that our minds are so much in the gutter, we default to automatically thinking the worst. But the truth is, we perceived it exactly the way they wanted us to. Because if it were true that they were trying to draw the comparison between Nori telling paparazzi “I said no pictures” to her father’s hatred for the invasive photographers, then they would have used a picture of him point blank. They are, in essence lying. Which goes to show the lengths that magazines and other brands will go to get publicity. Billboard was an attention whore this week and because of the way they went about it, they are definitely a Zero.

Atlanta Falcons vs Buccaneers Indepth Recap

0

atlanta falcons vs buccaneers 2015 nfl imagesIt appeared the Tampa Bay Bucs were content to stuff the run as the game started in the Georgia Dome Sunday. Lovie Smith had seen enough of Devonta Freeman the past five weeks to know he was the force driving the Atlanta offense.

The Falcons’ first drive was impressive during the 14 play march downfield, but the ending was just another three points as they failed to punch it in for six.

Julio had the play of the game early on as he chased down a defender that picked off Ryan in the endzone to keep the defender from scoring. A flag negated the pick, however Jones’ effort didn’t go unappreciated by the crowd or Dan Quinn.

Julio quickly provided the lowlight of the game when he had the ball ripped out by Kwon Alexander after a nice catch and run. Think Bama v Miami in ‘92. Not a good look for the most physically impressive player on the Falcons roster.

Tampa converted the fumble into a field goal to tie it up and 3 -3 was the score after a quarter.

Tampa kept Freeman in check as the second quarter ticked away. The leading rusher in the NFL was being held to under two yards a carry.

The Falcons’ third drive ended in another red zone opportunity wasted. That one ended in Halloween type fashion with the Buccaneers recovering a low snap that Ryan couldn’t gather up.

Atlanta has gone from a taker of turnovers in the first four games into a giver of picks and fumbles the past three weeks.

The low snap turned into another field goal for Tampa, and the score was 6 – 3 Bucs near the end of the second.

The impressive Falcons of the first four weeks are nowhere to be found, and they would get killed by New England or Green Bay right now.

The last drive of the half by the home team culminated in another turnover as Matt Ryan threw a bad ball that ended up in the arms of Kwon Anderson. Ryan launched himself into Anderson for the stop as if he wanted no part of the second half. The Georgia Dome crowd would go along with that at this point.

Ryan has looked no better than a bottom tier QB the past three weeks.

This interception led to a Jameis Winston to Cameron Brate touchdown catch. Bucs up 13-3 at the half as the Falcons heard the boo birds from the home crowd. All the Bucs points coming off Atlanta turnovers.

Eric Weems set up the ATL with nice field position around midfield with his punt return to start the third quarter after a three and out from the Bucs.

The next drive by the Birds was a familiar one. A few good plays that were wasted by a red zone turnover as Ryan and Freeman could not complete a simple handoff. Bucs ball, defense pissed, Ryan booed.

Tampa is no team to get behind on. They can salt away a game with their running game when they get a rare lead.

The run game did set up a big pass interference call on Desmond Trufant to put Tampa deep in Atlanta territory. Trufant had back to back PI calls as he struggled against the monstrous Mike Evans. Trufant also went out with an injury after being embarrassed two plays in a row. Hate to say a guy faked an injury but even hall of famer DBs have done so to cover for being burnt. #DeionSanders

Winston took it into the end zone on a broken play to put his team up 20-3.

I’m forced to close my DraftKings app as I have visions of garbage time Devonta Freeman fantasy points. This damn game is not over!

The Birds closed the gap when Ryan hit Jacob Tamme for a seven-yard score to make it 20-10 with the PAT.

It’s tempting to watch the rest of the game on mute, so I don’t have to hear anymore about how Jameis Winston loves the game of football and was born for big moments. I just ate lunch.

Winston continued to move his team down the field on the next possession but had a big third-down pass dropped by Mike Evans. The Falcons gave the Bucs a first down anyway with another offsides penalty.

Atlanta did get the ball on a punt back after the Bucs drive stalled.

Atlanta got a huge fourth down conversion with Freeman picking up a drive saving yard. Roddy White got a big first down on his first catch of the game on a 19-yard pickup.  Another red zone stall and the Birds ended up going for a field goal to make it 20-13 with just under five minutes to go.

Jameis Winston kept the Bucs’ next drive alive as he stayed upright to find Martin for a first down. Later facing a fourth down at the two-minute warning Tampa went with a bootleg by Winston that was stuffed by a great open field tackle by Ricardo Allen.

Atlanta started their last chance drive with under two to play. Penalties continued to hurt the home team. They overcame those as Ryan found Julio for an eight-yard score to make it a tie game with just 17 seconds remaining.

And we headed for overtime. Tampa would receive the kickoff. They put together a nice drive that was helped along by another PI call on a Falcons’ DB covering Mike Evans. That set the Bucs up on the Atlanta ten, but they failed to get in the end zone, settling for a field goal.

The field goal turned out to be enough as Atlanta failed to find any offensive flow in overtime. Their fourth down attempt was a failure like the entire drive. Tampa gets the win inside Atlanta’s home stadium 23-20.

The Falcons are still winless in the NFC South and headed nowhere fast.

Three things:

  • What the hell happened to Matt Ryan? He looked like a kingslayer the first few weeks and now resembles a bumbling court jester. With the running game going so well there is no need to force passes in the red zone that swing the game dramatically.
  • The Atlanta defense continues to be put in bad spots by the vaunted Falcons offense. The “D” has handled these situations well recently, but can’t be expected to cover the offense’s ass on a weekly basis.
  • The Falcons let Jameis Winston get comfortable, and that was a recipe for disaster. The Bucs QB is a rhythm passer that they let settle in when they had ample opportunity to rough him.

Highlights:

Julio Watch: Going into halftime Julio Jones had seven catches on eight targets to tally 112 yards. He was being outscored by a rookie tight end out of Harvard however and has to find the end zone more.

NBA Recap Week 1: Detroit Pistons Surprising

0

nba recap week 1 detroit pistons 2015 imagesThe first weekend of the 2015/16 NBA season is over, and most teams in the Association have played two to three games. That’s not a big enough volume to form any serious opinions regarding who the surprise teams will be this year. However, there are some early hints that the Detroit Pistons are going to over-achieve when compared to pre-season expectations.

Here’s a look at the division leaders where every pre-season divisional favorite has at least a share of the division lead except for the Cleveland Cavaliers:

Atlantic – Toronto Raptors, 3-0
Central – Detroit Pistons, 3-0
Southeast – Atlanta Hawks, 3-1

Northwest – OKC Thunder, 3-0
Pacific – LA Clippers/Golden State Warriors, 3-0
Southwest – Three teams, including San Antonio, 2-1

Detroit, who entered the season as 125 to 1 longshots to win their division (bet365), still have a perfect record following a close win on Saturday night against the Chicago Bulls. Coach Stan Van Gundy has to like the fact that his side won all three of their games as underdogs, defeating Atlanta and Utah additional to Chicago. That is a major hint that his side is below the radar a bit, and it will be interesting to see how they are doing after 12 to 15 games are played. In my opinion, Cleveland will still emerge as divisional champs, but the Pistons could prove themselves to be a playoff team this year.

There are not many other surprises in the standings, nor are there many surprises for individual statistical leaders in the NBA.

Steph Curry has been massive so far in the association, averaging nearly 40 points per game and 7.3 assists. Surely, he is off to a fantastic start when it comes to repeating as league MVP, something I think he is going to do.

On the boards, Andre Drummond is the king rebounder so far. Detroit’s center has been a monster through three games, averaging 16.3 per outing. Importantly, he is a major presence on the offensive glass with 6.3 offensive boards per game. With those often leading to put backs, it’s not surprising to see Drummond averaging nearly 19 points per and he should get a ton of double-doubles this season.

Ricky Rubio is the player leading in assists per game so far. In what is expected to be a quiet season in Minnesota, Rubio has helped his team off to a 2-0 start. With both wins coming on the road, the Timberwolves’ fans have to be feeling good about the first week of games.

Key games on Monday night will feature Cleveland in Philadelphia and Memphis in Oakland to face Golden State. A couple other games to look forward to are the LA Clippers at Golden State on Wednesday (ESPN) and the OKC Thunder at Chicago on Thursday (TNT).

Heidi Klum Vamps & Viola Davis’ Mini Oscar Homage

heidi klum vamps 2015 gossipLots of celebrities were out Saturday night sporting some pretty elaborate and clever costumes. Whether it was Neil Patrick Harris and his family decked out in Star Wars themed attire or Kourtney Kardashian’s superhero crew, the stars were dressed to impress for Halloween night.

However, one of the most anticipated costume reveals was supermodel Heidi Klum’s. Every year the multi-talented model throws an extravagant Halloween bash and always shows up in a complex, well-planned costume. Over the past few weeks, Heidi has been giving fans a glimpse of her costume and had everyone guessing what she might be. While many guessed that she was channeling her inner Kim Kardashian or Sasha Fierce (due to pictures she posted where she was getting enhancements modeled to her chest and bottom), Heidi came out in a completely different look…Jessica Rabbit!

heidi klum jessica rabbit 2015 gossipHeidi was photographed while walking the red carpet at her annual holiday party, which was held at Lavo in New York City. On the carpet, Klum donned purple gloves, a red wig and a tight red dress that showed off her notable boob and butt prosthetics. In addition to enhancements to her curves, Heidi also wore a prosthetic mask that had been molded to her face to ensure she would be comfortable throughout the night.

Once again, Heidi pulled out all the stops and did not disappoint!

Other stars in attendance included singers Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Scherzinger, Project Runway winner Christian Siriano and supermodel (and recently announced Victoria’s Secret angel) Gigi Hadid.

viola davis daughter oscar halloween 2015 gossipAnother costume that garnered lots of attention was Viola Davis’ daughter, Genesis. Viola’s 4-year-old daughter with husband Julius Tennon was photographed wearing a white top and lipstick while holding up a golden statuette resembling an Oscar. Evidently, Genesis decided to channel her Oscar-winning mother on Halloween night.

Along with the photo, Viola captioned her Instagram picture of her daughter with, “So…the Elsa costume? Didn’t work for her. The Pirate? A no go. So she finally said, ‘I just want to be YOU Mommy’! So…uhh…this is ME!”

Viola Davis, Instagram post:

More specifically, Genesis wore an outfit that was a mini version of what Davis wore when she won her first Emmy in September. Viola received the award for her role on the show How To Get Away with Murder. Her honor marked the first time that a black woman won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series.

Viola and her husband Julius adopted Genesis when she was a baby back in 2011. Julius also has two other adult children from previous relationships.

Better Search? Google’s Been Ranking its Brains

0

better search googles been ranking 2015 tech imagesWhat makes Google search better than the competition? What could have possibly led it to become the top search engine and its name synonymous with search? Google has the most complex search algorithm of all search engines that uses over 200 major factors or signals to rank web pages. Compliance with those 200 signals is what makes SEO a science and knowledge of how to use them keeps thousands of webmasters at work and changes to these signals keeps them on their toes. Now Google’s search algorithm codenamed Hummingbird has several components to process those signals many SEO practitioners are familiar with, such as Panda, Penguin and PageRank. One of those components has been revealed to be a machine learning artificial intelligence that Google calls RankBrain.

What does this revelation mean for website owners and what exactly is RankBrain? When we think about AI, Skynet and Terminator often comes to mind. Will this make searching Google better? What happens if it goes awry? Will Google go after anyone named Sarah Connor? Seriously, Google hails RankBrain as its third most important signal for ranking web pages. What’s the other two?

“…RankBrain is one of the ‘hundreds’ of signals that go into an algorithm that determines what results appear on a Google search page and where they are ranked… In the few months it has been deployed, RankBrain has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query…”

–Greg Corrado, Google senior research scientist

Though Google says it’s the third most important signal, the company is mum as to what the first and second are. It’s either an industrial secret or they’re just mimicking George Lucas and will disclose the first two after disclosing the fourth and fifth.

RankBrain basically handles a large majority of queries the search engine hasn’t encountered yet from simple phrases to direct human-like questions on an obscure topic like What is the average weight of a person in the state of Ohio or what is the annual rate of corn consumption in California? In contrast to simple queries such as ‘Katy Perry free music downloads’ or ‘Scarlett Johansson nude pics’.

Google says that 15 percent of queries per day are unfamiliar and obscure, and these are now handled by RankBrain. First, RankBrain translates the queries into more understandable bits. Then, for unfamiliar terms, RankBrain looks for synonymous terms or phrases then processes the whole query. RankBrain is apparently better at it than Google’s engineers and has the potential to be applied to other applications.

“Our investments in machine learning and artificial intelligence are a priority for us. Machine learning has long powered things like voice search, translation, and much more. And our machine learning is hard at work in mobile services like Now on Tap, which quickly assist you by providing additional useful information for whatever you’re doing, right in the moment, anywhere on your phone. If you’re an Android user that runs Marshmallow, try it out by long pressing the home button, when you’re in the Map, it’s very cool… Machine learning is core transformative way by which we are rethinking everything we are doing. We’ve been investing in this area for a while. We believe we are state-of-the-art here. And the progress, particularly in the last two years, has been pretty dramatic. And so we are – we are thoughtfully applying it across all our products, be it search, be it ads, be it YouTube and Play et cetera. And we are in early days, but you will see us in a systematic manner, think about how we can apply machine learning to all these areas.”

–Sundar Pichai, Google CEO

For website owners, this could mean more complex SEO techniques down the line. And if RankBrain is better than Google engineers expected, even Google might find it difficult to publish new SEO guides. RankBrain is also a recent implementation and old SEO might mean nothing in the near future. As a learning AI, influencing RankBrain can be more difficult than a complex algorithm of IFs and THENs. Hopefully, it doesn’t put many SEOs out of business. Luckily, it’s Google’s third most important signal as the first and second might already be familiar to everybody except they don’t know what they are exactly. And that RankBrain cannot supersede them, and that majority of Google searches are often simple words and phrases.

For everyone else. RankBrain can be a boon to people doing research as they sometimes need to enter whole sentences, phrases or long original questions on obscure topics. Many such queries get scrambled by Yahoo, Bing and DuckduckGo. Speaking of other engines, why did Google go through the trouble of disclosing this information? Is it part of an upcoming SEO update announcement or much-needed PR? In light of Yahoo’s resurgence, Yahoo becoming the default engine for Firefox and Safari, Microsoft’s aggressive marketing of Windows 10 and Bing, and an antitrust case in Europe, Google search could sure use a little PR. Whatever the case, RankBrain can only make Google search better and better the more it learns as time goes by. And if something does go wrong and it goes offline, Google says that it would be as if half of Wikipedia has gone down. Basically, it means there’s no turning back for Google. It’s RankBrain or bust.
