Google Project Fi – Another Slice in the Wireless Carrier Pie

google project fi transforming telecom industry 2015

Google’s Project Fi is a dream come true for mobile phone users in the United States. No longer will users be tied to any specific mobile network whose reliability drops depending on where the user is. Also, users will be able to automatically switch between cellular and Wi-Fi communication saving a lot of money on ongoing data connections. Sounds like a death knell for carriers such as T-Mobile and Sprint. So will Google’s Project Fi kill or lessen wireless carriers? Kill maybe a strong word since Google’s Project Fi wouldn’t work without the aforementioned networks. Project Fi actually makes use of them. Kill? No. Put these networks in the background? Yes. Even strengthen them? Perhaps.

For a flat monthly fee, Project Fi makes mobile users dreams come true. To not to be tied to a single network and its relative quirks and problems. To save on data connections which is rather expensive when roaming; and to always receive the strongest signal available in any area. Truly sounds like something any busy professional should invest in, drop their current phone and network and join the empire of a hundred zeros.

What Project Fi does is to automatically switch the user between Sprint and T-Mobile, whoever has the strongest signal in a particular area, so killing these networks is not in the plan. Users no longer have to subscribe to any of these two networks and subscribe to their relative problems as well. Its freedom for users and more of a symbiotic relationship between Google, Sprint and T-Mobile— kind of like Spider-Man and his black suit. Users are automatically switched to whatever has the strongest signal in the area ensuring quality calls and service.

Next, Project Fi will automatically switch off cellular data once the user connects to Wi-Fi saving a bundle on data costs. Project Fi will still allow calls and texts through Wi-Fi networks. However, Project Fi is currently in its infancy and only supports Google’s Nexus 6 phone with its multi-profile-SIM. The SIM allows the phone to handle multiple carriers so Project Fi might not end with Sprint and T-Mobile.

google project fi wireless 2015

Apple and non-Android users might be out of luck unless Google licenses out its multi-profile SIM. But Apple has its own ‘virtual SIM’ scheme within the iPad Air 2 and will later spread to future Apple devices. Unlike Google’s physical multi-profile-SIM, Apple uses software for the virtual SIM. With Apple though, the switching doesn’t happen automatically but that could soon change.

Why would these giant mobile networks allow such a thing? They have to, as the FCC mandates networks to unlock phones that were already paid in full. This means that unlocked phones can immediately come with virtual or multi-profile SIMs. Also, T-Mobile and Sprint signed up to Google of their own accord.

Even though Sprint and T-Mobile will be shunted into the background, they’ve practically subcontracted Google in delivering their signals for a small slice of the pie. Both networks can benefit from each Project Fi user. They don’t have to fight for subscribers anymore as Google does the enlisting for both of them. However, if Project Fi remits to either company based on actual connection times, the one with the weaker infrastructure suffers. Both companies lose their dedicated subscribers who have to put up with weak signals along with users who forget to turn off their data when connected to Wi-Fi. If Google’s contract between them is even, all three companies stand to benefit from Project Fi.

Not everyone uses smartphones and tablets though. There are plenty of old feature phones and smartphones out there that don’t make use of multi-profile or virtual SIMs. There are also many who prefer ordinary feature phones to smartphones and it’s from them that Sprint and T-Mobile will continue to get much of their earnings from. For both networks, Project Fi can benefit them for the time being and even strengthen them in the near future but as Google rolls out more multi-profile-SIM-enabled phones, the Search giant will slowly eat into their handset earnings and they will be relegated to being purely signal providers; unless Google makes them distribution partners. Surely such powerful companies have built-in safeguards in their agreements before allowing any third party to undermine them. Project Fi won’t kill them just yet. Google just becomes another middle man. And we know what they say about something that can’t kill you…

Aaron Hernandez Cash Poor But Sporting A New Prison Tattoo

aaron hernandez gets new lifetime prison tattoo 2015

Ex New England Patriots football player, Aaron Hernandez is making sure to get a media splash this week as his first court appearance happened on Thursday since he was sentenced to life in prison for murder. Naturally he pled not guilty to the charge that he tried to intimidate and silence a witness by shooting him in the face in a another double murder case.

He was just recently in trouble for allegedly standing as a lookout during a gang fight, and now he’s claiming to be cash poor while sporting a new prison tattoo on his neck with the word “Lifetime” over a star. I’m sure plenty of people will analyse that to see what it means.

It’s a violation of Massachusetts prison regulations to get a tattoo, to tattoo someone else or to possess tattoo paraphernalia while incarcerated. Possible sanctions include disciplinary detention for up to 10 days and loss of a privilege such as television or radio for up to 60 days. The Department of Correction did not immediately return calls seeking comment on whether Hernandez has been disciplined.

Hernandez, who grew up in Bristol, Connecticut, was convicted last month in Fall River in the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating Hernandez’s fiancee’s sister.

The former New England Patriots tight end was in a Boston courtroom Thursday to be arraigned on a witness intimidation charge in the shooting of his former friend Alexander Bradley.

aaron hernandez new lifetime new prison tattoo 2015

Bradley was in a Boston nightclub with Hernandez on July 16, 2012, when they encountered two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. After de Abreu accidentally bumped into Hernandez, spilling his drink, Hernandez became irate, followed the men and then fired five shots into their car while they were stopped at a red light, killing de Abreu and Furtado and injuring a third man, prosecutors said.

In court Thursday, prosecutor Patrick Haggan said Bradley witnessed the shooting. Seven months later, Haggan said, Hernandez and Bradley were at a nightclub near Riviera Beach, Florida, when Hernandez told Bradley he saw two men he believed were undercover police officers watching him.

Bradley responded by saying, “It’s probably because of the stupid stuff you did up there in Boston,” Haggan said.

The next night, the two men went to another nightclub. They argued over the bill and over a phone Bradley left behind, Haggan said. Bradley fell asleep on the ride back to their hotel, and when he woke up, Hernandez was pointing a handgun at his face, Haggan said.

Bradley suffered a near-fatal wound, resulting in the loss of his right eye, Haggan said. He said Bradley was pushed out of the car and Hernandez drove away.

Prosecutors asked Judge Jeffrey Locke to join the witness intimidation case with the murder charges against Hernandez so the cases can be tried together. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the double murder case, too.

The judge scheduled a hearing for June 4 to discuss combining the cases and to set a trial date. He said he hoped the case could go to trial in November.

Hernandez’s lawyers suggested January instead. They didn’t say anything about the charges in court and wouldn’t comment afterward.

Haggan said prosecutors want to do DNA testing on the handle of a .38-caliber gun they believe was used in the double killing.

In a separate hearing Thursday in New Bedford, Judge Richard Moses ordered a 60-day extension of a restraining order barring Hernandez from selling his 2005 Hummer and keeping the money.

Lloyd’s mother, Ursula Ward, has filed a civil lawsuit against Hernandez, and her lawyers are trying to track down his assets. Ward’s attorneys filed a temporary restraining order after the vehicle turned up for sale at a used car lot in Wrentham.

The judge advised attorneys for Ward and Hernandez to come to an agreement on the sale of the vehicle, and he ordered that the proceeds be held by the court. A status conference on the sale of the vehicle was scheduled for July 20.

Ward’s attorneys have placed an attachment on Hernandez’s $1.3 million house in North Attleboro, meaning it cannot be sold without them being notified.

An attorney for Aaron Hernandez says the former New England Patriots player is running out of money because he’s had to pay so many lawyers.

Attorney John Fitzpatrick made the comments Thursday during a hearing in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Hernandez was convicted last month of the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee. Lloyd’s mother has sued Hernandez, and her lawyers are trying to track down his assets.

Fitzpatrick says Hernandez was paid for only one year of his now-terminated $40 million contract with the team. He says Hernandez has had to hire a ”platoon of lawyers” for his criminal cases.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty Thursday to a witness intimidation charge that prosecutors say is related to a double murder he’s also charged in.

Atlanta Hawks: DeMarre Carroll Game 1 Injury against Cleveland Not Serious

DeMarre Carroll Injury atlanta hawks vs cleveland nba 2015

During the Atlanta Hawks 97-89 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, forward DeMarre Carroll suffered what appeared at first to be a very serious injury. Carroll hit the ground and immediately began grieving with pain and grabbing at his leg.

Good news for the team today—MRIs and X-Rays on Carroll revealed no structural damage, just a knee sprain. Carroll was assumed out for the playoffs, but in reality he will be a game-time decision for Game 2.

“We’re very hopeful. Sometimes you tend to think it can be the worst,” said Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer. “Right now everything we’re getting back is positive. We’ll monitor it the next 24 hours and hope for the best. It’s important to us, obviously.”

They better pray to the basketball gods hard, because losing Carroll would be a devastating blow for the Hawks as they enter Game 2 down 1-0. Not only is Carroll the Hawks leading scorer in the 2015 playoffs, he is also the team’s best defender and the only player on the roster up to the challenge of guarding LeBron James.

DeMarre Carroll Injury not serious for atlanta hawks 2015 nba

Even with Carroll on the court, the Hawks struggled to stop The King as he came to play in Game 1, finishing with 31 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Without Carroll, James didn’t even think twice about taking the ball to the basket on Kent Bazemore.

“He’s a very special player,” said Bazemore—Carroll’s backup with Thabo Sefolosha out for the season after the police broke his leg during a rough arrest—when asked about the difficults of guarding LeBron. “Great passer, so the biggest thing is trying to limit everyone else. He’s going to get what he’s going to get. If you can kind of keep everyone else in the bottle, you have a better chance.

What Bazemore is trying to say is that he understands he has no chance against James, so his team better pick up the slack by doing well in their matchups. This may sound silly at first, but it’s the same strategy Gregg Popovich used against LeBron back in the 2007 NBA Finals.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, these Cavs are a lot better than the team from 2007. With all the weapons the Cavs have now, Budenholzer better come up with something a little better than that just in case DeMarre Carroll can’t play for a few days.

Anaheim Ducks vs Tampa Bay Lightning: 2015 Stanley Cup Finals

The 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, at this point, are looking as though they will feature a match-up between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Anaheim Ducks.

The Lightning, who were idle on Thursday, kept control of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday night with a 6-5 overtime win over the New York Rangers. The victory gave TB a 2-1 series lead and they are looking stronger and stronger as potential Stanley Cup finalists.

tamby bay lightning beats new york rangers 2015 stanley cup playoffs

Game three on Wednesday was the second consecutive game that saw the Lightning score a half dozen goals following a 6-2 shelling in game two. The offensive outbreak may not be surprising to many that followed Tampa Bay this season. Noteably, the Lightning scored 15 goals in just three regular season games against the Rangers prior to the playoffs commencing.

The Rangers, who will be a road team in game four, will have to buck a serious losing trend if they are going to get back into the series with the Lightning. Now, regular season and post-season combined, the Lightning are 5-1 against New York with game four of the conference finals looming on Friday (8pm ET). Perhaps not surprisingly TB are currently second favorites to win the 2015 Stanley Cup outright, priced at +210 with bet365.

Should Tampa Bay make the Stanley Cup Finals, they could face the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks, who were in Chicago on Thursday night for game three of their series, entered the day much in need of a victory in order to reclaim home ice advantage. In a low-scoring contest Frederik Andersen turned away 27 of 28 shots for Anaheim while Ryan Getlaf had two assists. What resulted was a 2-1 victory for Anaheim over the Blackhawks and a 2-1 series lead for the Ducks.

At present, the Ducks are the outright favorite to win the Stanley Cup (bwin +175). Their series against Chicago will not resume until Saturday at 8pm with the ‘hawks hosting game four.

The Ducks and Lightning have both been to the Stanley Cup Finals in recent times. Anaheim made it in 2007 while the Lightning made in 2004. Each team won the NHL championship in their respective opportunities. However with both conference finals at 2-1, neither New York nor Chicago can be considered out of it but each game four could be considered a near-must win situation for each of those trailing teams.

NSA: Too Much Data, Not Much Information

nsa collecting more information than they know how to use 2015

The infamous National Security Agency, according to another whistleblower (other than Snowden?) is stocked with more data than it can handle and it’s still stocking more. It’s like a competitive eater choking on his meal but keeps on going. Isn’t the point of collecting data to process it so it can have meaning? The NSA may have lost sight of that or maybe they’re just too busy procuring more servers and drives to save all their eavesdropping.

There’s a reason why gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. According to whistleblower former NSA official William Binney, the NSA has too much data to sift through, that it hampers the agency’s effectiveness in detecting threats before they happen with potentially deadly results. Basically, the NSA is no longer as effective in preventing any attacks. What it’s good for now is forensic investigation to trace the perpetrators of any terrorist attack—after it happens. The Boston Marathon gets bombed, the government finds the Tsarnaevs quickly enough, (through a lot of security videos and much later their transmissions) but the agency still failed to prevent the bombing from happening. So all the data the NSA has collected is actually slowing the agency down. Imagine a cop so pumped up with donuts he can’t catch up to a purse snatcher on foot.

former nsa william binney 2015

Binney quit the NSA over a decade ago, a month after 9/11, frustrated that a seemingly more efficient system he helped develop was scrapped in favor of more intrusive and more expensive systems; systems he’s now criticizing. It seems like sour-graping but he does have a point. If the agency is indeed having trouble processing all the data its collected, then it’s not doing its job—which is securing the country from terrorist threats. In fact, Edward Snowden was inspired by Binney and exposed much of the agency’s secrets. According to Binney, should anyone in the agency post a simple query against their petabyte-sized databases, the results would be too overwhelming to sift through resulting in a huge time delay in case they were looking for something.

It would be fascinating if the NSA was able to trace someone through email or voice communications like how Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. found Bruce Banner through his communications with Mr. Blue in the Incredible Hulk; or how the bad guys were able to find hacker Matthew Ferrell by quickly sifting through hundreds of voice communications in Die Hard 4. If the NSA did have such a system, since the plot of Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier reflected how the government was collecting data from its citizens, we should be catching terrorists left and right. Maybe we are but the spy agency would rather not mention it to everyone. Speaking of collecting, Binney said that a lot of companies were in on it. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Verizon and other giant tech and media companies. Apparently, the NSA is much more obsessed in collecting as much data as it could, to be sorted out later. They even expressed their distaste of ordinary people with the ability to perform encryptions since it takes much effort to decrypt any encrypted file. They should even be grateful that if the individual is not working for any company, they’re automatically persons of interest. That narrows down the suspects in the US population to a few thousand.

Now if the NSA is more into collecting than being proactive, Americans then shouldn’t get too worked up about their privacy since the agency is too busy collecting rather than snooping. The agency’s managers might even be in it for the money as its ever expanding budget involves acquiring more and more surveillance equipment, servers and storage media. Hopefully, that’s not the case or the country’s doomed.

There’s now actually a bill in congress, passed just last week known as the US Freedom Act to stop the agency’s bulk data collection domestically. To stop concentrating on the country’s citizens and more on specific or external threats. US businesses and citizens have become very concerned regarding the bulk collection prompting opposing parties in congress to vote together against the NSA’s dragnet system. The US Freedom Act would certainly cut back on the NSA’s hardware spending and minimize the data the agency has to handle and narrow down its targets making it more efficient to do what the agency was founded for. To protect the citizens of the United States, not to spy on them.

Aaron Hernandez Saga Continues With Witness Intimidation Arraignment

Aaron Hernandez arraignment for witness intimidation 2015

It seems that former New England Patriots football player Aaron Hernandez just can’t keep out of trouble, even the day before he’s arraigned for his second major criminal case, witness intimidation. Just yesterday, it came out that Hernandez was allegedly a lookout while a gang related fight was going on in his prison so, as many suspected, he’s fitting right in at his new home.

He’s set to be arraigned on a charge that he tried to silence a witness in a double murder case by shooting him in the face.

Hernandez’s arraignment is scheduled for Thursday in a Boston courtroom. He was convicted last month in the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee’s sister.

The former star tight end also faces two murder counts in Boston in a 2012 double slaying that prosecutors say happened after a drink was spilled in a nightclub. Hernandez was indicted this month on a witness intimidation charge related to those killings.

Prosecutors say Hernandez shot the witness in February 2013 in Florida after he made a remark about the killings. The witness lost an eye.

Prosecutors haven’t identified the man, but it’s clear from earlier court proceedings it’s his former friend, Alexander Bradley.

In a separate hearing Thursday, Lloyd’s mother, Ursula Ward, is due to go before a judge in New Bedford to ask for a preliminary injunction barring the sale of Hernandez’s Hummer. Ward has sued Hernandez, and her lawyers have been trying to track down his assets. The Hummer turned up for sale in a used car lot this month.

Can Andy Murray Conquer His Novak Djokovic Obstacle?

andy murray obstacle with novak djokovic 2015

Novak Djokovic truly is a force to be reckoned with this season, and in the game of tennis, much of it is mental problems that can stand in a players way. Rafael Nadal appears to be having this issue this year as he’s stumbled, but another player who seems to get in his own way is also Andy Murray. Murray has pushed himself to the limits this season playing and winning back to back opens, but after winning his way into the 2015 Rome Open quarter-finals, he had to pull out due to exhaustion.

The fact that he fit a wedding into all of this just shows how far he’s willing to push himself to win, but that always will come with a cost, and usually there’s that one person who stands in your way that you allow to get into your mind. Murray seems to have this issue with Djokovic.

As Andy Murray gears up for the 2015 French Open, he will do so with more spring in his step than for the last couple of years. Last month he won his first clay-court titles in Munich and Madrid, and on the way defeated Rafael Nadal. Paris is on another level, however.

The latter event is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments on the tennis calendar, along with the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Winning more minor tournaments is one thing, but now will come questions about whether Murray can win another Grand Slam and whether he can reach the top of the ATP world rankings.

The answers depend in large part on the answer to another question: can Murray find a response to Novak Djokovic? The Serb is the world number one, most recently winning the Italian Open a few days ago as Murray rested himself for Paris. He has beaten the Scot seven times out of seven since losing to him at Wimbledon 2013 – notably in the final of the Australian Open in January. Where once the two men seemed evenly matched, now Djokovic looks to have the upper hand. If Murray is to build on his two Grand Slam victories, breaking this cycle looks absolutely key.

andy murray obstacles for french open 2015

Understanding Andy Murray

Despite his recent victories, there is widely held view that the main flaw in Murray’s game is a mental one. Murray himself highlighted his mental lapses in interviews after his defeat to Djokovic in Australia in January.

One approach to examining mental weakness is to look at toughness. Mental toughness was introduced in the sport psychology literature by Jim Loehr in the late 1980s. After years of academic debate about how it could be defined, a 2002 paper provided both a working definition and a list of 12 characteristics. It argued that the fundamentals of mental toughness are around deep robust confidence, resilience, an ability to filter out distractions and strong intrinsic motivation. To get a clear picture of Murray’s situation, I’m going to take each one in turn.

Murray’s game has a deep flaw which every other player knows about. He has the weakest second serve of all the top male players. And Murray’s second service in the Melbourne final was timed as slower on average than that of Serena Williams, the women’s champion.

The consequences of this slow second serve are twofold. It puts a huge pressure on the first serve, which is often resolved by being risk averse: Murray knows that his first serve must go in. The second consequence is that opponents know that his second service is attackable – in Melbourne, Djokovic won 19 more points on Murray’s second serve than the other way around.

In sport psychology, we interpret confidence quite narrowly as the strength of the belief that a specific behavior can be executed. It boils down to, “what is the strength of my belief that I can execute my first service at 93mph to within a few centimeters of the optimal target?” I suspect in Murray’s case, this is reasonably high – especially in contrast to, “What is the strength of my belief that I can execute my second service at over 75mph to within a few centimeters?” Considerably less, I suspect.

To compensate for the lack of threat in his service, Murray has worked on his physical conditioning. His speed and athleticism around the court is comparable to Djokovic. But unfortunately for Murray, Djokovic has another trump card: a return of service so devastating that it is seen as being one of the best ever.

We encourage players to focus on what they are doing rather than become preoccupied with their opponent. However Murray must be conscious that his weakness matches almost exactly Djokovic’s strength. It is difficult to believe that he walks on to court to play Djokovic with an unshakable belief in key parts of his game.

Andy Murray has shown very high levels of resilience to bounce back after short and long-term setbacks, and also of intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the extent to which a person is motivated to achieve without the incentive of rewards. He was not content with being the best player in his own country. At an early age, Murray benchmarked himself against the best in the world.

As he became more successful, he recognized it would have been easy to establish himself among the top players in the world and carve out a comfortable living. But he has appeared unwilling to do this. He continues to work hard on his physical and technical game.

In interviews after the Australian final in January, Murray spoke of being distracted by Djokovic’s thigh injury during the second and third sets. Having won the second set on a tie-break, Murray went on to lose the final set 6-0. Even the most naïve spectator could see that Murray’s mind was elsewhere from the beginning of the third set. He made many unforced errors and his service was inconsistent.

One would need access to Murray’s mind to know exactly what he was thinking. From the visible evidence it appeared that his attention had moved away from executing his skills. My suspicion is that he was second-guessing the type and extent of Djokovic’s injury to determine whether he was fit to continue. The loss of focus for just a few points handed the momentum over to his opponent. By the time Murray regained his focus, Djokovic was away.

Murray knew he had been “mugged” and this led to his final set collapse. Had his focus remained on the skills, nothing his opponent was doing would have mattered. He would simply have carried on playing.

No assessment would be complete without mentioning that after his recent Madrid victory, Murray made headlines by writing on a TV camera that “marriage works” – a reference to his wedding to Kim Sears a couple of weeks earlier. It would lovely to think that this could be making the difference, but the wider evidenceis patchy to say the least. It could just as easily be a pleasant coincidence. I certainly wouldn’t advise him to rely on it.

From my analysis, the problem for Murray and his support team is that they appear to have a blind spot – an unwillingness or inability to address the main flaws in his game, at the interface between the technique and psychology.

If he is to fulfill his potential as a player, starting with the French Open, his team need to systematically address and eliminate the areas of weakness in his game. These are less critical against players of lower ranking: Murray has the technique and fitness to consistently dominate, hence his position in the world’s top three. Against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic the margins are so small that the smallest flaws become accentuated. And in the specific case of Djokovic the match of strengths against weaknesses make it extremely difficult for Murray to succeed.

Career Grand Slam Up For Novak Djokovic: 2015 French Open

career grand slam up for grabs for novak djokovic french open 2015

With such a tumultuous tennis season, it’s no wonder ticket prices for the 2015 French Open seem higher than usual. The regular Roland Garros favorite Raphael Nadal has had a slump that has knocked him down into seventh place on the tennis rankings, and he’s not even a fourth seed at the upcoming open. The king of clay has been whittled down by his own self and number one ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic has swooped in to grab all the goodies in the form of titles, records and now what could be his firth French Open title.

The Serbian tennis star has played it very smart in securing his number one position by taking rest when needed as he pulled out of the 2015 Madrid Open so he could have three weeks down to prepare, and he wound up earning the 2015 Rome Open. Andy Murray ran himself ragged winning back to back titles, but even after he had earned his way into the quarter-finals of the Rome Open, he had to withdraw due to exhaustion.

Less than a week away, the tennis season’s second Grand Slam tournament will be as up for grabs as it’s been in recent memory. The usual attempted conquest of knocking off clay-court mastermind Rafael Nadal is more realistic than ever with the Spaniard not at the form tennis fans have come to expect.

The nine-time French Open champion is obviously still a contender—after all, he is gunning for his sixth consecutive French Open title—but an injury forced him to miss most of the second half of last season and he has yet to find his groove. His recent showing means for the first time in a very long time, the Spaniard will not start as the odds-on favorite to win, a title that now belongs to the world’s No. 1-ranked player, Novak Djokovic.

novak djokovic slams for 2015 french open

With the championship up for grabs, ticket demand is up and prices will continue to rise if the favorites advance deep in the tournament. According to Championship Tennis Tours, the premier marketplace for French Open tickets, only the first day’s action has tickets for under $300. Tickets to Center Court start at $295 on May 24th, but climb up to $495 and $475 for the next two days, respectively.

The most expensive session is currently the Men’s Semifinals on Friday, June 5th at a get-in price of $1,095 at the Philippe Chatrier Center Court. Comparatively, the Women’s Semifinals the day before costs only $395 to get a ticket. Tickets to the Men’s Finals at Championship Tennis Tours cost a minimum of $595, the same price as what it costs to see Quarterfinals action on June 2nd or June 3rd.

Nadal’s consecutive title streak will be put to the test by a few of the usual suspects. Andy Murray is one of them, heading into Paris on a ten-match winning streak and winning his first two titles on the clay surface in Munich and Madrid. Murray reached the semifinal last year before losing to Nadal, who went on to defeat Djokovic in the final.

Djokovic is 35-2 in 2015, winning five titles. He won the first Grand Slam Tournament of the season, the Australian Open, defeating Murray. Djokovic became the first man in the Open Era to win five Australian Open titles and is one short of Australian legend Roy Emerson. The Serbian’s clay court victories this season came in his two most recent victories in Rome and Monte Carlo. Unbelievably, Djokovic has never won a French Open title, and it is the only championship missing to complete his career Grand Slam.

Nadal is entering the tournament as an unprecedented No. 7 seed, which should create some compelling matches earlier than usual. If he can advance to the quarterfinals, it should set up some very intriguing matchups and could lead to an unprecedented increase in ticket  demand, especially if Djokovic and Nadal meet yet again at Roland Garros.

National League MLB Week 6 Winners & Losers

national league week 6 winners losers mlb 2015 images

The Major League Baseball season is only a little over a month in but the firewoks have already begun for the National League. The latest firework to go off was down in Miami as the Marlins elected to fire Mike Redmond after the team lost four straight games and dropped to 16-23 on the season.

Before you start to think we are throwing the players on the losers list just slow down. The players won’t find themselves on this list despite the struggles from a few players as well as a bullpen that has blown eight saves on the season. The front office and owners land on our losers list this week.

While they might not be playing the front office and owner continues to put the Marlins in the news for all the bad moves. Yes the team was struggling but before you go firing the manager you need to take a little deeper look into the struggles. Was it Redmond’s fault the bullpen blew eight games? No, was it Redmond’s fault his top two pitchers have not been on the mound for him over the past two seasons?

That answer is no as well but if you still elect to fire him we can understand. The problem we have is to move your general manager down to manager to save you money? You’re telling me you have no one in the farm you could move up or on your bench. This is why this team continues to be one of the worst teams in the National League.

Here are the rest of the winners and losers around the National League League.

Winners:

Washington Nationals: The Nationals are slowing fighting their way to the top of the National League East division. The latest stretch including winning five of seven games including two of three against the Arizona Diamondbacks before taking three of four against the Padres. All seven of these games came out West as the team was carried by strong pitching in all but three of those starts.

Max Scherzer big national league winner mlb nationals 2015 images

Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals: Some of the Nationals success belongs to Scherzer after another big week. The former Detroit Tigers starter made two starts picking up wins in each contest to improve his record to 4-3 on the year. In those two starts, Scherzer went 14 innings allowing just one earned run while striking out 17 batters. The solid outings helped lower his season earned run average to 1.75 after seeing it jump up to 2.11 just a little over a week ago.

brandon belt week 6 national league winner mlb giants 2015

Brandon Belt, San Francisco Giants: Belt is one of a few Giants playing well of late helping the team find themselves in second place in the National League West division. Last week Belt started off slow picking up just one hit over his first 13 at bats before the weekend arrived. Then we saw an entirely different player as Belt picked up three straight games with three hits including a home run in each game. In those three games, Belt hit .643 with two doubles, three home runs, seven runs driven in, eight runs scored and a walk.

kris bryant week 6 national league winner cubs 2015 mlb

Kris Bryant, Chicago Cubs: For months we all sat back and waited to finally see the top prospect in the Cubs organization finally get his shot in the Majors. Now we all can see the hype around this kid despite seeing him struggle out of the gate. That being said Bryant has started to get hot of late hitting in all seven games the team played last week while picking up three home runs, eight runs driven in and seven walks.

Losers:

Miami Marlins: We could have listed a few players from this team including Michael Morse or Ichiro Suzuki on this list. That being said this organization at the top continues to make some bad decisions and it showed up again this week as they let go Mike Redmond go and then decided to move general manager Dan Jennings to the head coach position. Jennings who hasn’t coached a team since coaching a high school team has one bright spot to look forward to and that is Stanton. For Redmond it is hard to blame him for the teams bullpen struggles as they have blown eight games this season.

matt garz national league week 6 loser brewers mlb 2015

Matt Garza, Milwaukee Brewers: Not quite sure if there is anyone on this list that is warrant a spot on the winners list. This week Garza finds himself on our losers list after one of the worst starts we have seen from any starter this season. The Brewers veteran managed to get through only 3.1 innings while allowing 10 hit and 10 runs with just one home run. Garza struggled with his command walking three batters in route to falling to 2-5 on the season in eight games started.

Troy Tulowitzki national league rockiers week 6 loser mlb 2015

Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies: The games highest paid short stop continues to struggle this year while picking up just two home runs in his first 34 games. Add in the struggles of the Rockies and now we will hear his name in trade talks for the next eight weeks or so till the trade deadline shows up. Overall Tulowitzki is hitting .283 which isn’t bad around the game but the limited home runs have many concerned. Last week Tulowitzki appeared in four games for the club picking up just two hits in 15 at bats with only one run driven in. Once the Rockies elect to move on from the All-Star they will also find themselves on our losers list!

American League MLB Week 6 Winners & Losers 2015

The Major League Baseball season continues to heat up as summer approaches. One of those teams that have gotten hot of late is the Chicago White Sox. The same White Sox team that had struggled to start the season and could have even landed on our losers list a few times. Now the White Sox is just one of a few key winners around the American League for week 6 of the MLB season. After a 10-7 loss last Monday to the Milwaukee Brewers, the White Sox ran off five straight wins to round out the weekend. This included the final two games against the Brewers as well as a three game sweep of the Oakland A’s. The team has been getting some solid contributions from a handful of players including the pitching staff. Outside of the 10 runs allowed in the first game of the week. The staff allowed three or less runs in four of their next five games. One of those starters was Chris Sale who improved to 3-1 on the season after allowing just two runs over eight innings while striking out 11 Brewers. Here are the rest of the winners and losers around the American League. Winners: Avisail Garcia, Chicago White Sox: Since the White Sox have been one of the hotter teams in baseball it is easy to put a few players from their team on our AL Winners list. Garcia stands out as the top option as he currently leads the team in batting average, on base percentage and hits. The White Sox outfielder also is second in the team in home runs with four and runs batted in with 17. Last week Garcia was red hot picking up hits in five straight games including four multi-hit games. In total Garcia picked up 11 hits including two doubles, two home runs and seven runs driven in. Mike Wright, Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles rookie made his debut on Sunday for the Orioles against Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels. The 25 year old from East Carolina managed to go 7.1 innings allowing just four hits, zero runs while striking out six Angels. That included his first career strikeout coming against one of the best hitters in the game in Trout. Houston Astros: Seems like the Astros continue to play some of the best ball in all of baseball and it has shown up on our winners list. Last week the Astros managed to pick up five wins in six tries with their only loss coming last Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants. After losing their first contest to the Giants the Astros picked up the second game of the two game series before sweeping the struggling Toronto Blue Jays. Dallas Keuchel moved to 5-0 on the season with his 8-4 win on Friday while Collin McHugh moved to 5-1 after allowing just two runs in the team’s 4-2 win over the Blue Jays on Sunday. Brad Miller, Seattle Mariners: The Mariners infielder took home the American League player of the week award joining teammate Nelson Cruz who took home the award back in April. Miller picked up a hit in all six games he appeared in last week including three multi-hit performances over that stretch. Along with the hits, Miller picked up three doubles, four home runs, five runs driven in, three walks and six runs scored. The hot stretch also helped increase his season batting average from .233 to .264 on the year. Losers: Caleb Joseph, Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles front office is counting down the days till Matt Wieters can return from the disabled list. While Joseph has provided some pop over the past year and half as he gets hot then goes cold for a long period of time. That cold time showed up last week as hit picked up one hit in six games. Overall Joseph record 18 at bats but did manage to drive in three runs but struck out four more times while lowering his season overage to .258 after sitting near the .300 mark for most of the start of the season. R.A. Dickey, Toronto Blue Jays: While we are only going to take a look at his start on Friday Night, Dickey has in reality put together back-to-back terrible games. On Friday against the Astros, the Blue Jays starter gave up 10 hits over five innings including two home runs and seven earned runs. The outing moved his record to 1-5 in eight starts while raising his earned run average up to 5.76 for the season. Oakland A’s: The A’s got off to a solid start last Tuesday picking up a 9-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately for the team that would be the last game they would win for the week losing the second game of the two game series before losing three straight to the White Sox. The team’s issue this year has been their ability to score runs losing three of those four games last week while scoring three or fewer runs. Bruce Chen, Retired: The 16 year old veteran called it quits this week after allowing three runs over 2.1 innings. In two outings this season Chen struggled allowing nine runs, 17 hits, three home runs while striking out four hitters. While it is hard to put anyone on the losers list after pitching that long in baseball but he will be leaving the game he loves something every ball player hates to do.

Premier League Game Week 37 Review: Sunderland out of danger zone

premier league week 37 recap images soccer 2015

The tussle for the third spot on the Premier League table is alive. Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal held the Manchester giants to a 1 – 1 draw at Old Trafford and on Wednesday the Londoners again dropped points against the relegation battlers Sunderland.

arsenal draws with manchester united premier league 2015

After the 0 – 0 draw at the Emirates, Sunderland have ensured their stay in the top division. One out of Newcastle and Hull City will be eliminated on Sunday as we get ready for the season finale. Newcastle will entertain Sam Allardyce’s West Ham while Hull will play host to Steve Bruce’s former club Manchester United. From the looks of it, Hull City will go down to the Championship until and unless Newcastle and Man United both lose on the last day.

Manchester United can still grab the third place as Arsenal dropped points for the third time in a row. These two English giants are separated by three points and have a goal difference of seven. The North Londoners face West Brom, who are in outstanding form led by the former United player, Darren Fletcher. If United win by a good margin of goals against Hull and Tony Pulis’s West Brom defeat Arsenal then the Gunners will be back to their usual spot – the fourth place.

West Brom handed the new champions their biggest defeat of this campaign. Jose Mourinho’s men have already clinched the title and they couldn’t care less about the result on Monday. The Blues’ boss claimed that the top contenders in England are as much responsible for the result as they allowed Chelsea to be crowned champions far too early.

“I think the top contenders are also guilty because they let us win the title so early,” Mourinho said. “I can’t just blame the players, I have to blame myself. I also lost that salt and pepper you need during the week to work at a high level.

“We are champions. You can’t expect us to go on the bus crying because we lost 3-0. Am I happy because we lose? Of course I’m not happy. Am I sad? No. The ideal scenario would be to be champions, close the shop and go home.”

Manchester City won 2 – 4 at the Liberty Stadium and have now sealed their place just below Chelsea. Last few results in the Premier League can save Pellegrini’s job at the Etihad if Manchester City are unable to find a suitable replacement for the Chilean. City face Ronald Koeman’s Southampton on Sunday and it will be a good entertaining fixture before the curtain draws. There is still a good chance of a shuffle in the ranks of teams at fifth to seventh. There is a very good chance that it might happen and the final day of the league is notoriously famous for such happenings.

Steven Gerrard’s last game at Anfield was spoiled by Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace. Brendan Rodgers’ men lost 1 – 3 after going in front courtesy of Adam Lallana’s strike in the 26th minute. Gerrard will be hoping to end his long illustrious career at his home town club with a win.

La Liga Game Week 37 Review: Barcelona wraps up La Liga

Barcelona have clinched their fifth league title in the past seven years. More silverwares can follow as the Spanish giants are two matches away from completing their second treble.

Luis Enrique’s men won first of their three finals in the penultimate match week of the season. They defeated the former La Liga champions 0 – 1 at Vicente Calderon. Last year, Atletico Madrid won the league at Barcelona’s home ground Camp Nou and it couldn’t have been a more fitting end to the season by Barca’s perspective. Enrique, in his debut season with the Catalan giants, has lifted his first major silverware and more could follow in a span of few weeks.

Lionel Messi’s 65th minute strike separated the two sides on Sunday. Diego Simeone’s men are no longer the champions of Spain. Also, despite the 4 – 1 win at Espanyol, Real Madrid are out of contention. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick but Los Blancos will end this season without any silverware. Marcelo also got on the score sheet as Carlo Ancelotti’s men picked up their 29th victory in the league. Their next game against Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu will be of very little significance and Madrid faithful might want to see this campaign end with one last consolation win.

valencia draws with celta vigo la liga 2015

Valencia was held in a 1 – 1 draw at home against Celta Vigo. They can still finish third on the table if Atletico lose and they win their last match. It will ensure them automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage. Although a defeat could allow the fifth place Sevilla to take up the fourth spot. Unai Emery’s men are just one point behind Valencia and have already sealed the Europa league spot. One slip-up by Nuno’s Valencia could take Sevilla to the Champions League play-off round. Hence the last day of the season would be pretty exciting.

The fight at the bottom of the table will also have close end. The four relegation threatened teams are Granada, Deportivo, Eibar and Almeria. Cordoba’s fate is already decided as they are at the foot of the table with 20 points – 12 points far from their nearest rivals. Deportivo and Granada face the top sides Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively. Hence both these teams will have to come up their A-game to remain in the Spanish top division. Almeria also have a tough last fixture at the weekend as they are up against Valencia, who have a very little margin of error. Cordoba can still do some damage despite their position on the table. They will face Eibar and a win or draw will ensure Eibar’s relegation to the second division. Almeria will also need three points for any realistic chance of staying in La Liga.

All the ten matches this week will be played on Saturday and I can assure you that there won’t be a dull moment in La Liga this weekend.
