Serie A Game Week 37 Review: Roma beat arch rivals Lazio

0

roma beats lazio serie a soccer 2015

In the Monday’s Derby della Capitale, AS Roma defeated Lazio 2 – 1 at the Stadio Olimpico. The Italian giants have ensured their berth in the Champions League next season. Lazio, on the other hand, will have to wait for the final day to mathematically reach the play-off round for the Champions League.

Despite losing to Roma on the penultimate day, Lazio are in a very good position to finish top three. They are three points ahead of their closest challengers Napoli, who are far behind on goal difference. Even if Lazio loses to Rafa Benitez’s men on Sunday, the goal difference between these two sides might be the problem for Napoli. The Naples based side will most probably feature in the Europa League next season alongside Fiorentina.

No goals were scored in the first half of the Roma-Lazio derby. In the 73rd minute, Roma’s Iturbe gave his side the lead. Djordjevic canceled out goal just eight minutes later. Rudi Garcia’s men had the last laugh as Yanga-Mbiwa netted the winner five minutes before the end of normal time.

It is one of the biggest rivalries in Italy and it was fanned by Garcia a day before the clash.

“Unless I am mistaken,” he said, “Lazio beat Sampdoria with a goal that should have been disallowed. This after they cried a lot about how things went [in their previous game] against Inter.”

There won’t be much movement at the bottom of the table as all the three places for relegation have been filled. Parma’s fate was sealed a long time ago. They lost a whopping 24 matches and drew seven throughout the course of this 2014/15 campaign. Cesena will finish on the 19th spot with 24 points, six points above Parma. Cagliari is seven points ahead of the 19th place Cesena.

AC Milan won 3 – 0 at San Siro against Torino. A brace from Shaarawy and Pazzini’s penalty won three more points for the Rossoneri. Milan will finish in the top half of the table, despite a very average performance throughout the season. It is expected that there will be a change in the managerial position at the club with rumors of Carlo Ancelotti making a comeback to replace Inzaghi. A tenth place finish on the Serie A table is disastrous for the club of the size of Milan and with the standards set by them they need to be competing in Europe each year.

Milan’s hated rivals Inter Milan haven’t had a great year either. They are currently eighth on the table and the 3 – 2 loss at Genoa didn’t help their cause to reach the Europa League.

Juventus will be crowned the kings of Italy after the match against Verona on Sunday. They have already won two silverwares this season and if they manage to beat Barcelona in the Champions League final in Berlin, it would be their first historic treble. The Old Lady can become the eighth European club to achieve this feat.

Bayern Munich lift third successive Bundesliga trophy

Alongside the English and Spanish leagues, the German Bundesliga league was also wrapped up at the weekend. Bayern Munich have added the 25th German championship to their trophy cabinet after dominating at the top of the table throughout the season.

After suffering a series of losses, Pep Guardiola’s men have ended the season on a positive note. They registered a 2 – 0 win over Mainz at the Allianz Arena, courtesy of goals by Lewandowski and Schweinsteiger. The Bavarians’ Spanish boss has hit back at the criticism after his team was eliminated from the Champions League by Barcelona.

baryern munich pep golden showers for bundesliga men 2015

“If Bayern Munich are looking for a coach that has to win the treble every year then I’m not the one they want,” he told reporters at a press conference prior to their final match of the season. “I’m not good enough to do that.

“I’ve learnt that people talk too much here, my advice to my critics is to calm down. They should have more respect for the German champions.

“The Champions League might be the greatest crown in club football but, for us, winning the Bundesliga is the most important thing and we did that.”

VFL Wolfsburg managed to keep the runners-up spot despite a draw on the final day. They drew 2 – 2 at Cologne with Gustavo and Perisic netting one each for Wolfsburg. Monchengladbach’s loss to Augsburg also ensured their position at the second spot. Monchengladbach gave some stunning performances in the second half of the season except on the final day. But it won’t matter as they’ll now be going head to head with the other elite teams in Europe next season.

Bayer Leverkusen finished fourth on the Bundesliga table and they have also attained a place in the qualifying round for the Champions League group stages. Schalke lost on the last day, which has allowed Augsburg to grab the automatic qualification to the Europa league and Schalke will have to compete in the play-offs for the spot in group stages. Schalke were defeated 2 – 0 by Hamburg, who have qualified for the relegation play-off.

Against all odds Borussia Dortmund have managed to return back to Europe. Although the tournament wouldn’t be the top tier, but the Dortmund faithful would happily accept the opportunity after a disastrous season. Jurgen Klopp managed Dortmund for the last time on Saturday and his team didn’t disappoint him as they won 3 – 2 against Werder Bremen. Shinji Kagawa, Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan scored one each on the final day of the Bundesliga.

Freiburg lost 2 – 1 to Hannover and they’ll now be demoted to the second division. Hertha BSC has survived mainly because of the goal difference between them and Hamburg.

Alexander Meier of Frankfurt is the top goal scorer of the league with 19 goals in 34 matches. Robert Lewandowski along with Arjen Robben, who missed out the later part of the season, finished second with 17 goals.

FC Barcelona clinch 23rd Spanish La Liga league title

On Saturday, Luis Enrique’s men lifted the La Liga trophy for the sixth time in the last decade. They still have a long way to go if they want to catch the record winners Real Madrid (32).

The Catalonian giants were held by Deportivo La Couna in their final home game of the season but it didn’t affect the celebrations. Leo Messi added two more goals to his tally of 56 goals in the 2 – 2 draw. If the Argentine could lead his side to a triumph in the Champions League final against Juventus, he might most certainly lift the Ballon d’Or in January next year. Messi also has an opportunity to shine in the Copa America to be held in Chile next month.

Real Madrid’s 7 – 3 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu was just a consolation to a disappointing end to their season. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a first half hat-trick in the win over Getafe. The Portuguese ace has ended the season with 61 goals in all competitions – his personal best goal scoring record. There have been a lot of speculation regarding the future of Los Blancos’s main man and it won’t be utterly shocking if he moves away from Spain because of the tough time Bernabeu faithful and Spanish press gave him throughout the year.

Following the defeat in all major competitions, Carlo Ancelotti has been sacked from the helm at Real Madrid. The Italian spearheaded the club to win the much awaited ‘La Decima’ last season, but the club president Florentino Perez claimed that the expectations at Real are extremely high.

“What did Ancelotti do wrong? I don’t know,” Perez added. “The demands here at Real Madrid are very high. The affection that the players and the fans have for Carlo is the same as the affection I myself have for him.”

The La Liga champions last year, Atletico ended this season with a goalless draw at Granada. Diego Simeone’s men finished third on the Spanish league table, 16 points behind the league champions. Antoine Greizmann was probably one of the best players at Atletico and also in the league and he’ll pursued by European giants in the summer transfer window.

Valencia managed to hold on to the Champions League spot on the final day. Almeria went ahead twice but the visitors came from behind to win the game 3 – 2. Garcia netted the winning goal in the 80th minute but Parejo’s sending off in the 89th minute meant a nervy end for Valencia supporters. Sevilla were breathing down Valencia’s neck and a slip would’ve seen Unai Emery’s men advance to the Champions League instead of the Europa League. The fifth place Sevilla also got a 3 – 2 away win and their opponents at the weekend were Malaga.

Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao will join Sevilla in Europa next season, but they’ll have to go through the play-off round prior to that unlike Sevilla.

Granada have survived relegation, but Eibar will go down despite the 3 – 0 win over Cordoba. The goal difference was the key to separate both these sides at the bottom of the table. Almeria and Cordoba are the other two teams that’ll not feature in the top division next season.

Kei Nishikori Projection For French Open 2015

kei nishikori projection for 2015 french open images

Kei Nishikori did not see action at the 2015 French Open on Thursday. Nor will the runnerup from the 2014 US Open see action on Friday. Nishikori, who drew Benjamin Becker in the third round of the French Open, tweeted a message of consolation to the German veteran on Day 5.

It read:

Becker, who played the maximum ten sets of tennis in the opening two rounds, is now bothered by a right shoulder injury. But after enduring those two long matches, the soon-to-be 34-year old had basically no chance in the third round against Nishikori, even if healthy.

The walkover is still a huge break for Nishikori as he will enter the second week of play at Roland Garros without any serious fatigue issues blighting him. To summarize his tournament so far, Nishikori got through both rounds one and two having only played the minimum number of sets. That’s not that physically demanding for a player of his conditioning.

kei nishikori tennis run 2015 french open

Now, with the walkover in round three, Nishikori should basically be 100% fresh, even mid-tournament, while his main rivals to make the French Open final should all be exerting themselves – and possibly getting eliminated.

Looking ahead at Nishikori’s draw, those rivals are Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych, Stan Wawrinka, Gilles Simon, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and maybe Gael Monfils. However there is not a lot for those backing Japan’s top player to be worried about in the fourth round. Nishikori could face no one more proven than Lukas Rosol, a player who will probably beat Teymuraz Gabashvili in the third round.

In the quarters, Nishikori could face no one more proven than Berdych, a player who is a late-round underachiever in Grand Slams. Furthermore, Japan’s No. 1 is 3-1 overall against the Birdman, a favorable record that further suggests it will be Nishikori that wins his quarter. Betting odds also favor Nishikori to make the semifinals as the sportsbooks (ie. bet365) generally have him priced shorter than EVEN to do just that.

kei nishikori getting balls at 2015 french open

In the very late rounds, Nishikori may have to battle Roger Federer, another player who received some draw luck at Roland Garros. But I’d take Nishikori to beat Federer should that match-up take place as you have to like fresh and young legs in the late rounds of Slams. Furthermore Federer could be in for a little bit of trouble in the fourth round and quarters as Gael Monfils, Stan Wawrinka, and Gilles Simon are all near the Swiss Maestro in the draw now.

Nishikori was a major factor on his side of the draw from the onset of the tournament. But with the walkover giving him an edge over his competitors when it comes to who is attritioning and who is not, Japan’s No. 1 is now the player most likely to win his half of the draw in my view.

Recent NHL Coaching Changes & Transactions

nhl latest coaching changes 2015 images

The 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs are winding down however there’s still plenty of news regarding transactions. Recently numerous signings have taken place in coaching positions.

Dan Bylsma new coach of buffalo sabres nhl 2015

On Thursday, for instance, Dan Bylsma became the new coach of the Buffalo Sabres, replacing Ted Nolan behind the bench. TSN reported that Bylsma’s deal will be a five-year one as the Sabres look to regroup.

His most noteable coaching achievement was winning the Stanley Cup as the coach of the 2008/09 Pittsburgh Penguins. However, at that time, Bylsma’s lineup included both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and so coaching the Buffalo Sabres may prove testing.

Buffalo finished dead last in the NHL with just 54 points on the entire season. That left them poised to claim top prize for the 2015 NHL Draft however, as bad luck would have it, the Sabres missed out on the Connor McDavid sweepstakes. Time will tell if Bylsma can do something with a lineup that lacks star power.

ken hitchcock staying with st louis blues nhl 2015

In another recent NHL transaction, Ken Hitchcock extended his tenure with the St. Louis Blues. So far, in five seasons behind the bench in St. Louis, Hitchcock has enjoyed both regular season success and post-season failures. The last two seasons have seen the Blues win more than fifty regular season games in each season. However in the playoffs, St. Louis did not get passed the first round on either occasion.

Hitchcock earned a lot of praise while coaching the Dallas Stars in the late 1990s. Noteably he won the Stanley Cup in 1999 on the infamous Brett Hull ‘skate-in-the-crease-allowed-this-time’ goal. However the Edmonton-born coach has not experienced any significant post-season success since the 2003/04 season. With just a one-year deal, it may be do-or-die time for Hitchcock in Missouri.

peter deboer new coach for san jose sharks nhl 2015

In very recent news, according to the verified Twitter account for the San Jose Sharks, Peter DeBoer is the new coach:

In the past two weeks, Mike Babcock left the Red Wings and signed on with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers brought on Todd McLellan as their new coach. We reported on both of these stories.

Unlike Hitchcock and Bylsma, DeBoer has not won the Stanley Cup as a coach to date. However he did make the finals in 2011/12, the only year in his coaching career where he did something significant. Otherwise all of his teams have missed the post-season and he was fired in both Florida and New New Jersey.

Novak Djokovic vs Thanasi Kokkinakis: 2015 French Open

novak djokovic beats off gilles muller 2015 french open

Number one tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic has pushed forward again as he defeated Gilles Muller 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 at the 2015 French Open moving him into the third round. The win didn’t come as easily as many of his others at Roland Gaross  when he slipped on the clay stretching his groin muscle.

Djokovic will face Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis next while he chases his first French Open title.

The Serb was rarely troubled during the opening stanza, dropping just the solitary game, though Muller found some rhythm during the following set, but was powerless as Djokovic continued to dominate.

Djokovic took out the 32-year-old veteran for a second straight Grand Slam, having also defeated the Luxembourg native in the Australian Open Round of 16. He has not lost to a left-handed player other than Rafael Nadal since the 2010 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Paris.

In the one hour, 50-minute match, Djokovic tallied 35 winners and converted on five of the 12 break points he created. The Serb also saw success at the net, where he won points on 10 of 14 attempts.

Muller was one of 19 men aged 30 or over to reach the Roland Garros second round. In five career meetings with a World No. 1, he has yet to earn a set.

The top seed wrapped up the set with a near-flawless final set, conceding just four games.

The Serb top seed slipped on the clay during the second set stretched his right groin muscle, calling for the physio at the change of ends after the ninth game.

Apart from that it was a straightforward victory as he dropped serve only once.

After converting match point with a service winner he went and shook hands with Paris St Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who was watching in the crowd.

HBO’s HARD KNOCKS Needs More Coverage

hbo hard knocks with houston texans 2015

With the news that the Houston Texans will be starring in the 2015 version of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” I can’t help but wonder why this great yearly series can’t be expanded. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing bad to say about the show. It’s entertaining each and every season. It is perfect just the way it is in present form. And the Texans are a good fit with lots of interesting personalities to fill the show with entertainment on and off the field.

J.J. Watt is the best defensive player in the League and has a big personality to go along with that. Arian Foster is still one of the better running backs in the pros and isn’t afraid to share deeper thoughts, like how the NCAA takes advantage of college players. The storyline of former number one draft choice JaDeveon Clowney trying to make it back to form after an injury filled rookie season should make for good TV as well.

While I am interested in the Texans sweating it out in training camp, I would like more teams featured. I know there is only one HBO and they have a lot going on. They can’t cover all 32 teams of course. There is a great deal of work that goes into making training camp seem insanely interesting. If they tried to do the entire NFL there’s no doubt the product would get watered down. I definitely wouldn’t want that to happen. But surely there is a way to get more content without ruining the concept.

If HBO is capable of handling just one more team that would be great. They certainly have like seven HBO channels that could use some original content instead of showing “The Wolverine” 82 times in one month. I trust HBO to do this stuff right. Hard Knocks on NBC or CBS that first season would have likely resulted in it being the last season. HBO is different than regular TV, clearly.

more coverage for hbo hard knocks 2015 nfl

What’s wrong with Netflix doing a version of Hard Knocks? After all there are like 42,000 documentaries on there already. What’s a few more? In fact what’s 31 more? I can imagine there are enough independent film makers out there who would love to get a shot at a gig like this with the NFL. Now I certainly wouldn’t have time to watch the training camp documentaries on the other 31 teams, and most people wouldn’t even want to do that. But I would sure watch my Falcons doc each and every preseason. Getting to know the ballers on my home team a little better would enhance the experience for me, as was the case last season with the Birds featured on Hard Knocks.

Every team has a great following. This is the NFL after all. So each theoretical Netflix preseason documentary would have a big viewership. Not to mention the major teams that have a national following. Dallas of course would be close to the most watched along with the Patriots. Pittsburgh has rabid fans all over the country, so there would be no shortage of viewers for their training camp doc. Certain players would make their team relevant in the Netflix queue as well. Who wouldn’t want to get a closer look at Marshawn Lynch even if he said just a few words for the entire show, and of course Russell Wilson is a fan favorite we can’t get enough of it seems.

I certainly don’t know the ends and outs of how HBO has all of this set up with the NFL. Maybe they have an exclusive deal and I could understand that. However more content could be spaced out to not compete with HBO since they are the “original.” The NFL is always looking for ways to grow and that seems to be Roger Goodell’s main focus, even to his own detriment. Since no one really cares about the actual preseason games, I can’t believe the League would be opposed to adding more preseason content that actually gets fans fired up. HBO has set the table with Hard Knocks, which is going into its tenth season. All the NFL needs to do is build upon a hit show that people are already talking about, even with months away.

Adrian Peterson Speaks About Minnesota Vikings, Briefly

adrian peterson speaks briefly about vikings 2015

Now that Adrian Peterson has made an official statement, I guess his relationship with the Minnesota Vikings will improve by leaps and bounds. Or not. He didn’t exactly say he can’t wait to get in with his teammates for some off season workouts, which just last week he made public that he would be skipping. There was also the report earlier in the week that Peterson wanted a trade.

In an interview with ESPN on Wednesday, Peterson stated, “The reason I’m not attending OTAs has nothing to do with wanting to be traded. It’s about securing my future with the Vikings. It’s business, not personal and I understand that firsthand. Go Vikings.” He says he doesn’t want out of Minnesota. He simply wants the remainder of his current contract to have more guaranteed money. There is zero guaranteed after the 2015 season.

You certainly can’t blame a guy for trying. Peterson and his agent must surely see the writing on the wall. NFL teams aren’t exactly overjoyed about committing guaranteed money to running backs anymore, especially those with some age on them. AP is 30 years old and while still an athletic freak, will not be able to fend off Father Time, a real ass kicker. Team Peterson is trying to get every last dollar secured before the bright lights of the NFL start to fade out.

adrian peterson with son he beat on vikings 2015
I do believe some of this public battle between the best pure running back in the NFL and Minnesota is personal. The money is always the main factor, but Peterson felt betrayed when the team that drafted him failed to have his back when he was accused of beating his young son. Make no mistake, AP still feels like he had the right to discipline his child with spanking, even though he knows he went too far. He can’t say that publicly of course. Minnesota had no choice but condemn what their All-Pro running back did. No way they could defend it or even stay silent about it, no matter how much they appreciated him as a player.

As for the money part, which is always at the heart of these contract disputes, Peterson has waited for the wrong time to try and secure his future. You don’t ask for a better contract when you have very little leverage. He should have done that at the time he signed his current deal that now leaves him hanging after 2015.

Minnesota has to be plenty pissed that their best player missed all but one game last year. The Vikings hold the hammer now, so why would they give him a better contract with more guaranteed money? AP should have struck while he had hold of that hammer. The team isn’t going to simply hand over more money because of how valuable he has been over his eight year career. Pro teams hand over money based on what they believe a player will do going forward. Peterson already left them hanging last year, and who’s to say 2015 won’t be his last highly productive season. He’s still got plenty in the tank in my opinion, but Minnesota isn’t so sure or they would be in a hurry to change that contract for their guy.

Not only is Minnesota not in a hurry to accommodate AP, they are being downright combative. Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer had this to say in response to a question about Peterson trying to force a trade, “He’s got two choices. He can play for us or not play.” That’s not exactly the tone of a guy who is trying to sweet talk the franchise player into making things right. I don’t see Zimmer saying something that bold without the approval of ownership either.

So what will happen with this saga in the coming weeks and months? It’s possible, but unlikely, that Jerry Jones will swoop in to save Peterson from the awful hell of his $12.75 million the back is set to make this season. Blockbuster NFL trades rarely go through even though I know they are great fun to chat about. What is most likely is AP dressed in purple and gold for 2015. The 2016 season will be determined by his performance this year. If Minnesota feels like he is worth more guaranteed money, then they will give it up. If not they could cut him or even trade him. The Vikes hold the hammer and if Peterson is pissed about that fact, he should have got a better deal back when he was invaluable to the team. Of course he could have chosen basketball or baseball where players aren’t just used up like cheap pornstars then tossed aside as soon as fresher, cheaper ones are available.

KNOCK KNOCK: Eli Roth Brings Keanu Reeves Back

0

eli roth knock knock trailer 2015

The official trailer for the upcoming horror film Knock, Knock has been released and if you’re a sometime fan of Eli Roth, like I am, then this trailer might really grab your attention. Knock, Knock stars Keanu Reeves as a family man who gets caught up in every man’s nightmare. Two pretty young girls knock on his door late at night begging to use his phone. They end up seducing the father and husband in to having a steamy threesome that he will soon regret when the women show up the next day to brutally torture him!

The film is being considered an unofficial remake of the 1977 exploitation film Death Game. Eli Roth is the writer and director of the film. If you know anything about his other films which include Hostel I & II, then you know he’s a big fan of the torture porn genre. His films helped aid in the development of the term “torture porn.” I’m sure he won’t go light on the violence in this one.

The beginning half of the film will have a big erotica feel to it no doubt. Does anyone else find creepy that Eli Roth is directing his own wife Lorenza Izzo in a threesome scene?

keanu reeves tied up for eli roths knock knock movie 2015

Guess it’s just me then.

The film reminds me of a classic psychological thriller/horror film Funny Games (the original film, not the 2007 remake although the remake was not that bad). Funny Games followed two young psychopathic men as they take a family hostage while they’re on vacation and play terrible, torturous games with them. The film is highly controversial and forces the audience to question why we often enjoy seeing such meaningless violence play out on the big screen. It makes it even more bizarre when you like the film because of the guilt trip it pulls on you.

I have no doubt that Knock, Knock won’t be nearly as psychologically smart as Funny Games, but you never know. Keanu Reeves has not been knocking it out of the park at the box office as much as he used to, but his last film John Wick was a big success. That was due to the fact that it was a mainstream action flick. A torture porn movie with a threesome sex scene is not exactly the normal Saturday night choice of entertainment. Keanu is still looking good for his age and it is not hard to believe that a man wouldn’t be able to resist two pretty girls grabbing all over his junk. The real test will come in at how authentic the torture scenes are..or how close they will come to being authentic.

The terror begins with an innocent knock at the door. It is pouring down rain and when he opens the door, the are two attractive young ladies completely wet and seductive. They seem innocent enough.

The girls request help with using his phone and give him the “stranded with no help” routine.

He lets them in, and one thing leads to another. The next thing he knows, they have seduced him into an erotic scene of a threesome. That seems to be the end of the night, and we see him regretting his decision the next day.

But the girls are back to punish and torture him in classic Eli Roth style. The sinister antics of the two girls lead him on a torturous journey for survival against the exploits of their disturbed minds. What started out as a good deed quickly spirals into hellish situation.

It’s been said to be a modernization of the 1977 Peter Traynor film “Death Game.”

“Knock Knock” stars Reeves, Lorenza Izzo, Ana de Armas, Aaron Burns, Ignacia Allam and Colleen Camp.

The film actually debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January before Lionsgate quickly stepped in and snagged it.

Sadly, the movie only has a U.K. Release date of June 26th, but no US release date. We can only hope it will come sometime soon.

Will Windows 10 have much effect on PC sales?

windows 10 helping pc sales intel 2015

Windows 10 is the latest version of the Windows Operating system, produced by Microsoft. The new version is due for release sometime this summer although the technical preview has been available for quite some time so there is a lot of information available as to the look and feel of the new operating system.

Having said that, since the preview is now closed there will very likely be a lot of changes and new features that have not yet been made public when the operating system is officially released.

By all accounts version 10 of the Microsoft Windows Operating system is going to be quite well received though – as is almost always the case with Microsoft it takes a couple of versions of their operating system before they get it right – we have seen this when Windows XP came out and blew Windows ME out of the water and also when Windows 7 came out and was a massive leap forward in terms of usability compared to its predecessor Windows Vista.

Based on this history as well as the fact that we have seen many usability issues with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 it is a fair estimation that (hopefully) Microsoft will have perfected their vision with the release of Windows 10. Some people take this as a negative but there is a good methodology behind the hit and miss of Microsoft’s operating system releases; First of all it’s important to understand that technology by definition has to always be hitting boundaries and thus any company operating in the technology niche has to take risks and perhaps more so than in any other sector. Microsoft certainly fall into this category and will happily take risks at every opportunity – of course with taking risks you inevitably have failures which explains some of their failed operating systems.

Microsoft have a very good strategy for developing these failures into success though and they rely heavily on their user base for doing so. When you think about the strategy it is very efficient – they take a risk, a leap in the deployment of technology in the hope that it will work and once that technology (in this case an operating system) is out in the public they see how it is adopted, see how each new feature is taken up and used by the consumers and then they further develop the technology, change ideas and perfect the product on the next release.

This is great for product development and clearly works as Microsoft have one of the most successful operating systems in the world. However, there are some issues with the strategy and one of the key things that people tend to have an issue with is the fact that everyone who purchases the operating system that “doesn’t quite work” feels like they have been taken for a ride.

2015 first quarter pc sales slump windows 10 2015

Putting this into context – for the people that shelled out the money to upgrade from say Windows 7 to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 as soon as it came out will now be feeling like they have wasted their time and would have been better to wait for the release of Windows 10 which has come relatively soon after. This is especially true when you look at the negative feedback that has come as a result of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

Microsoft addressed this issue very well when they announced recently that they will provide a free upgrade to Windows 10 for all retail users that are currently running either Windows 7 or Windows 8. This is fantastic news for consumers because it means anyone who recently purchased one of those new operating systems does not have to pay again to get the new version.

Despite being good for the consumer it may have a negative effect on PC sales though – where the release of a new operating system would traditionally encourage people to upgrade their PCs – replacing old hardware with new – the fact that there is a free upgrade available means that people are far more likely to keep their existing hardware so that they can benefit from this upgrade – which of course is only available if you already have one of the covered versions running on your computer.

The up side is that there are now many new devices available that will be running on Windows 10 such as Microsoft’s surface – which is sort of a cross between a tablet and a laptop. In addition it is highly likely that there will be many features in Windows 10 that require the latest hardware to be taken advantage of.

All said and done it is no doubt a sensible move by Microsoft as it will ensure customer loyalty whilst also encouraging a far greater number of users to start using the new version of the operating system which is exactly what Microsoft want. It probably will have some effect on PC sales through but hopefully in the long run it will encourage the continuing use of PCs and laptops over other devices such as phones and tablets.

NSA Bug for Android: Available on Google Play

nsa bug for android google play 2015

You just purchased a brand new swanking Android smart phone with Google Play, congratulations! Unless you’re a model citizen with nothing to hide, you might want to think twice before downloading anything from Google’s app store. Gone are the days when suspicious persons break into homes and install bugs into handsets. Thanks to technology, bugging is done en masse. According to the latest leaked documents from Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency apparently hijacked Google Play in order to distribute spy software into Android phones. As if we already didn’t have enough malware. The bug is basically harmless but if you’re worried, consider downloading from other Android app stores, if they haven’t been bugged already.

Even after spending months in exile in Russia, Edward Snowden remains relevant. In his latest leak to the press, the NSA had a program codenamed Irritant Horn that goes as far back as 2011, which aims to use Google’s Android Market (what Google Play was called back then) to distribute malware to track specific targets (by bugging en masse). The program’s foremost use was to spy on African countries such as Congo, Sudan and Senegal in order to watch out for surprises such as the Arab Spring last 2010 which by now eventually resulted in the rise of ISIS. The program of course aims to track and collect data on suspected terrorists and other persons of interest. The program also aims to somehow send misinformation to its targets, to send propaganda. According to the document, this is actually a joint effort by the NSA and its counterparts in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, collectively known as the Five Eyes. The malware would be spread in the local app store servers used by the target countries but knowing the NSA, the malware would be present in the countries’ respective citizens as well.

The program works as a man-in-the-middle by running between Google Play and the users’ smartphone and introduce the malware as a separate but invisible app or an altered update to popular social media apps. With Android phones having the largest market share for smartphones, it’s logical for the NSA to hijack Google Play. Since the plot dates back to 2011, and if implemented, Google Play might not be the only app store compromised. Not to be an alarmist, but the Apple App Store and Windows Store could be bugged already as well as 3rd party Android app distributors. Your old favorite phone could be bugged already. The attack is subtle and would hardly be noticed by users. Without the leak, no one but the best computer professionals would be aware of it.

It’s been a long time since 2011 and it’s unknown whether this program has been implemented or not. If so, how do we know we’ve been bugged? We don’t. We can only be sure if your smartphone is brand new, has not been to any app store or is older than 4 years like my trusty Palm Treo or a more secure Blackberry. Also, if your phone employs encryption, you can’t easily be tracked or snooped on.

Speaking of encryption, the FBI and other agencies have been urging Microsoft, Google and Apple to keep encryption to a minimum on mobile devices which actually goes against the necessity of making communication devices as secure as possible. If government institutions did implement such an absurdity first, you get Wikileaks, more terrorist attacks and a personal call from the Mandarin. The tech companies mentioned meanwhile are urging the government to accept encryption and make necessary changes.

Google and the NSA both declined to comment about the latest from Edward Snowden. Whether irritated and horny smartphones really exist, we’re not sure. But if you want a smartphone and stay secure and bug free, I’ll put up my Treo on eBay but I won’t negotiate with terrorists.

Golden State Warriors vs Cleveland Cavaliers: 2015 NBA Finals

golden state warriors beat houston rockets 2015 nba finals

The Golden State Warriors have made it back to the NBA Finals for the first time in decades. Steve Kerr‘s squad defeated the Houston Rockets in game five from Oakland on Wednesday night to wrap up the Western Conference Finals 4-1. The Warriors will now have eight day’s rest before they face Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the championship series.

The Rockets, although they had earned a reputation for playing their best when their backs were against the wall, went out in game five without much of a fight. The two seed in the west lost by 14 in no small part due to a horrible game by James Harden. He had just 14 points but, more un-impressively, Harden committed 13 turnovers – more than the rest of the team combined.

Stephen Curry lead all scorers with 26 points on the night. He was trailed by Harrison Barnes, a player who played well above his averages with 24 points and seven rebounds. Klay Thompson, in limited action, also had 20 points although his playing time was curbed thanks to a knee to the head that he appeared to recover from.

The Warriors are now back into the NBA Finals for the first time since 1975, the last time the franchise won the championship series. While many will be attributing a fair chunk of the success to the players on the court, especially Curry, Steve Kerr undoubtedly deserves a huge chunk of the credit.

A first year coach in the association, Kerr’s mind for the game of basketball cannot be denied. As a player, he was a potent offensive weapon and he remains the all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage. He’s the perfect coaching match for Curry, a player who shot .443 from beyond the arc during the regular season.

With both the Eastern Conference Finals and the Western Conference Finals finishing quickly, NBA fans will have quite the wait for the playoffs to resume. In fact there is an eight day layoff as game one of the NBA Finals will not go until next Thursday night. Accordingly both teams will enter the championship series well-rested and there will be a lot of time for hype.

The match-up for the 2015 NBA Finals is noteable in that it does not include a franchise with a history or either short-termed or long-termed success. The Boston Celtics aren’t in it, the Miami Heat aren’t in it, and neither are the Los Angeles Lakers. The 2015 NBA Finals will see two typically “have-not” franchises square off and, just maybe, that might hurt the ratings a bit.

Cleveland fans will be looking for their first-ever championship while Golden State fans, at least the ones who can’t remember 1975 (ie. 95% of them?), might as well have the same outlook.

Game one goes on June 4th at 9pm ET from Oakland. Popular opinion, as suggested by betting odds, make the Warriors the series favorite (source: bet365).
