‘Shark Tank’ 710 Leaux Racing & Trunkster

shark tank 710 leaux racing trunkster 2015 imagesAfter a week break, Shark Tank returned to ABC with a new batch of entrepreneurs. Sharks Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner and Robert Herjavec were presented four pitches from up-and-coming businesses looking for an investment. From knit handbags to racing tricycles, the Sharks were given diverse options on ventures that they could help fund and develop.

So here is a recap of tonight’s pitches:

Leaux Racing Trike

Asking: $120,000 for 20%

Tyler Hadzicki raced on in with the latest innovation in biking, the Leaux Racing Trike. These bikes are designed similar to a children’s 3-wheeled tricycle. However, they have been altered for more extreme use and relatively high-speed action. The bikes are designed so that the driver is at the lowest possible seating position, with the pedals placed at the very front tire.

Initially, Tyler created the bike for his high school science project. However, after he won first place at a San Diego science fair, he realized he might be on to something. Shortly after, Tyler created a Kick Starter campaign that raised over three times more money than his specified goal. The bikes are sold for $350 and cost approximately $170 to make.

Unfortunately, both Kevin and Barbara drop out, as they don’t see the scalability of the niche product. Meanwhile, Lori advises him to look into licensing down the road but also drops out. Robert says that he needs to determine his true target market, either the kids or the hardcore riders. Soon after Robert drops out, followed by Mark Cuban.

Thus, Tyler walks out without an investment.

Glow Recipe

Asking: $425,000 for 10%

Co-creators Christine Chang and Sarah Lee are New York-based businesswomen who are hoping to bring Korean beauty products to the American market. Glow Recipe is a line of beauty products that are specially formulated using traditional Asian ingredients – such as kelp.

The women explain to the sharks that they use their experience from working for L’Oreal to curate which products they believe are suitable for the US market.  Although they don’t make the products themselves, they feel that they have the special touch that will allow them to successfully infiltrate the market.

The Sharks are impressed as Christine tells them they went from $3,000 in the first two months to making over $500,000 in the 10 months following this. In addition, they are on track to do $1 million this year.

Barbara is the first shark to offer, at $425,000 for 40%. Shortly after, Kevin offers $425,000 for 50% and then Robert comes in at $425,000 for 30%. Unfortunately, Lori says that the cosmetic business is too competitive and drops out.

Christine and Sarah end up accepting Robert’s deal, as he drops down to $425,000 for 25%.

Sarah Oliver Handbags

Asking: $250,000 for 25%

Sarah Oliver created a business around her passion for knitting. She hired a team of senior citizens (referred to as the Purlettes) to help her create hand-knitted handbags.

The company description explains, “the Purlettes + 1 are the backbone of Sarah Oliver Handbags. They are the coolest, most inspiring group of men and women – average age 88 – and we feel like the luckiest team in the world to get to work with them. The founding group nicknamed their selves The Purlettes +1, so named for their “knit one, purl two” expertise, as well as the pearls of wisdom they impart. The +1 represents the sole male knitter, Hector.”

In each bag, there is a tag that explains the story of the elderly citizen who knitted it. The bags are pretty high-priced, as they cost about $47 to make and sell for $225. To date, she has earned $1.9 million in revenue.

Lori really admires the business and tries to get all the sharks to go in on a deal. Lori offers $250,000 for 25%, with each shark paying $50,000 for 5%. Lori explains she hopes to make a statement by getting all the sharks in the deal.

Unfortunately, Mark, Kevin, and Barbara aren’t feeling as giving and drop out. This leaves Lori and Robert in, but Sarah asks Mr. Wonderful to come back in. Kevin agrees but increases the equity to 30%.

Therefore, Sarah makes a deal with Lori, Robert and Kevin at $250,000 for 30%.

shark tank 710 trunkster 2015 images

Trunkster

Asking: $1.4 million for 5%

The last pitch of the night was from Gaston Blanchet and Jesse Potash, the creators of Trunkster. Trunkster is a luggage line that includes GPS, a charger for mobile products, roll-top access, built-in scale and a sturdy handle. It is an innovation that hopes to reduce the stress that many travelers face when dealing with luggage.

Unsurprisingly, the sharks are taken back by their $28 million valuation, especially since they are currently pre-revenue. However, Gaston explains he has full confidence in the concept, as they became the most successful travel campaign in Kick Starter history (raising $1.4 million). In addition, they have already collected $2 million worth of orders.

With all of the innovative features, the product sells for $395 and costs about 20% of that to make. Their plan is to sell their product only online.

Unfortunately, all of the sharks are impressed with the concept, but they aren’t happy with the valuation. Robert tells them they are worth about $3-5 million at this point.

Barbara is the first shark to drop out because she feels the product is too masculine and bulky. Afterward, Robert offers the entrepreneurs $1.4 million for 30%. Kevin follows and offers them $1.4 million for 37%. Lori is nervous about the risk associated with the idea but agrees to give them $1.4 million for 15%.

Ultimately, the guys try to negotiate a deal with Mark and Lori. They offer them 5% for $1.4 million, with a promise to pay them back their total investment within 24 months. If they are unable to do so, Mark and Lori’s equity will increase to 10%. In addition, after they are paid back, Mark and Lori will receive $1 royalty per unit sold.

Lori and Mark agree to Gaston and Jesse’s offer, and they close the deal.

What’s interesting with this one is that it’s not all original as luggage that was similar was pitched on Science Channel’s All-American Makers. This one was to help make you be able to carry more things in your luggage along with the USB ports.

You can catch a new Shark Tank next Friday, December 11 on ABC.

Next Week:

Shark Tank embraces the holiday season, as it features animated glow balls with synchronized musical trees, whimsical knit hats, pop-up greeting cards and natural deodorant that features charcoal.

shark tank passed on bubble soccer 2015 images

Bubble Soccer John Anthony Radosta Bounces Back After A Shark Tank Pass:

Bubble soccer started out as a gag on a Norwegian TV show. Thanks to YouTube’s viral magic, it exploded into a national U.S. sport. The National Association of Bubble Soccer counts 39 leagues across the country with eight to 12 teams each. Unfortunately, it failed to achieve the pinnacle of success for budding businesses — a deal on ABC’s hit reality show Shark Tank.

Bubble soccer impresario John Anthony Radosta bounced into the Nov. 20 episode of Shark Tank to demonstrate how bubble soccer is played just like regular soccer. Except the players are enveloped in giant plastic bubbles and Sharks — especially Kevin O’Leary — laugh hysterically as the players bump into each and roll on the ground. And there are no goalies.

Radosta was seeking $160,000 for 10% equity in his  of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. company, Advanced Sports Technology — “the one-stop shop for prospective bubble soccer entrepreneur” to participate in the sport and run a local league. In addition, the company earns fees for referring prospective players to local teams and renting the bubbles for events. It also manufactures and sells them. Since kicking off in early 2014, Radosta’s business scored $365,000 in sales, as of his July taping. Between the taping and the airing, sales inflated to $470,000.

But none of the Sharks chomped on bubble soccer owing to the “convoluted” business model. Was it a sports league? A franchiser? An equipment provider for corporate events? A bubble soccer manufacturer?

“You’re all over the map,” scolded Kevin O’Leary. “I don’t see how you’re going to make any money. You did a really poor job of explaining it to me.”

“I think it’s great for the consumer. I don’t see the vision for the league,” said Lori Greiner.

“The longer you talked, the more confusing it got,” Robert Herjavec declared. “The longer you talked, the more business models there were.”

“I think you’re going to hit a brick wall,” concluded Daymond John.

“You were so convoluted in trying to show us the numbers,” explained Mark Cuban. “You missed the basic point of what your business was.”

Rodasta, a former sales rep at OpenTable, explains what went wrong in the Shark Tank and how he’s bounced back.

Missing the Goal

So you didn’t get a deal on Shark Tank . What do you think happened? What would you have done differently?

Radosta: Honestly, I think the sharks looked at the business and didn’t know where they could add value to it. I can appreciate that. They’re busy people. Bubble soccer isn’t something that can be sold on QVC or put on the shelf in Target (TGT). We’re literally trying to create an entire sport and scale not only the organization, but also the market for it.

Watching the episode, I’d have to say my only regret was that I wasn’t more aggressive. In hindsight, I think maybe I was too nice and too polite. Maybe I should have pushed back more? I don’t know, I wanted to look and be professional above all else. When Mark called me out for pulling numbers out of thin air, I wasn’t making up numbers and should have said that. You can see on my face I was wincing to remember the exact numbers.

From the moment I auditioned to the moment I stood on that carpet, I had spent seven months memorizing all of my previous and forward-looking financials and watching every episode from seasons one through six. I knew exactly how each shark would value the company. I knew the objections to expect. I saw enough episodes to know that the sharks look for a weak point in an entrepreneur’s knowledge of their own financials.

I felt very confident. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be shot down because I was over-prepared about my business. As Mark hinted toward when he went out, all I could muster at that point was, “wow, that’s surprising.”

How did you value your company when you appeared on Shark Tank?

Radosta: I valued my entity using both a discounted cash flow model and a whole list of comparable deals done by the sharks based on earnings and free cash flow multiples of those deals. Contrary to what Kevin and Robert say about companies being worth only 4x free-cash flow, based on my research of 100 deals they did, the sharks invested at an average 11x earnings multiple or a 24x free-cash flow multiple. It’s exactly the valuation I came in at.

The discounted free cash flow model agreed. Also, the part when I talked about the discounted cash flow valuation, I wasn’t just saying that randomly. I was answering a question from Kevin about my $1.6 million valuation. It probably was edited out because of time constraints.

I also didn’t factor in the other product I invented and patented in the valuation, which would have been a great fit for Daymond or Lori (AquaArm). I wasn’t allowed to discuss it. I figured it would just need to be a nice surprise for them if a deal was done.

Have you gotten other investors to invest in your business? Who? How much?

Radosta: As of right now, I haven’t secured outside funding yet.

How did you come up with the idea for your business? What made you think it could be a successful product and/or service?

Radosta: I have always been a “scratch your own itch” entrepreneur. The National Association of Bubble Soccer, AquaArm, and new invention I’m still developing, all came to fruition because I wasn’t able to find and buy what I was looking for.

Honestly, I just wanted to play bubble soccer and just wanted to buy a hydration system. But nobody was offering bubble soccer anywhere in the country.  I wasn’t happy with the hydration systems available for running. I knew that if I was thinking like this, there were others out there thinking this way too. I would just need to find them.

Key Business Lessons

What did you learn from your Shark Tank experience?

Radosta: To be honest, the one thing I learned is no matter how much you prepare for something, you have to be prepared that it just might not work out for reasons beyond your control. I also learned that once you get even the slightest bit of notoriety, some people will literally go out of their way to insult you and try to distract you from what you’re doing.

But you have to just put the blinders on in both cases and stay focused on the prize. You can’t ever lose sight of the fact that you are making a difference in people’s lives with your products. And when one door closes, another door always opens.

The other thing I learned was the value of cloud computing. Working with a developer of mine, Peter, we rebuilt the entire National Association of Bubble Soccer site. We put the whole site architecture into Amazon Web Services to handle the Shark Tank effect. All of the testing, setting up load-balancers and autoscaling groups, and learning the command line interface all taught me a huge amount about the future of cloud computing in helping companies handle high-traffic loads. Truly remarkable stuff they’re doing at Amazon (AMZN).

What’s the best advice you can give other entrepreneurs who are looking for investors?

Radosta: The best advice I’d say is to be patient. Nothing in entrepreneurship is ever guaranteed or just handed to you. You need to be prepared for a lot of rejection. Sometimes that rejection will be very public like it was for me. But honestly, who cares. Frank Sinatra said the best revenge is to be incredibly successful, so that’s what I’m focused on.

Which business books do you recommend most and why?

Radosta: Oh boy, where do I start? I’m a huge Warren Buffett fan. So I’d say pick up The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America, which is a collection of all of his letters to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A). I’m a big believer in that being a better investor makes you a better businessman. And being a better businessman makes you a better investor. Warren Buffett exemplifies that.

I’d also say to pick up Richard Branson’s Losing My Virginity. It’s such a great entrepreneurial journey from a guy who has done everything and had a lot of fun along the way, which is what entrepreneurship should be.

I’m also a big fan of John Paul Dejoria’s story. There’s a great lecture by him on YouTube at the GSB Entrepreneurship Conference about how he grew his business out of his car, all the issues he ran into and how he overcame them. Some fundamental tenets of management he teaches are praising people in public while criticizing in private.

Gary Neville named Valencia head coach

0

gary neville named valencia head coach 2015 soccer imagesThe former Manchester United captain has been appointed as the head coach of La Liga outfit, Valencia. The news came as a big surprise to the whole football community as Phil and Gary Neville will look to guide the club back towards the top of the table.

Gary Neville, 40, was presented as the head coach in a press conference on Thursday. Neville stated that he isn’t looking to bring in the Manchester United philosophy to Valencia.

“I’m not going to insult Valencia by saying I’m coming over here and playing football like Manchester United,” Neville told reporters.

“My experience with Sir Alex Ferguson is invaluable but when you talk about style, it will be very different against Barcelona at the weekend to against Lyon [in the Champions League] next week.

“Every coach wants to play attacking football to entertain the fans, but we’ve also got to find a way to win.”

After his appointment, Gary Neville has become one of the favourites to land the job at Old Trafford after Louis van Gaal. Neville’s close friend and ex-teammate, Ryan Giggs, is the assistant manager at Manchester United and is believed to replace United’s Dutch boss. The Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is also among the suitors for the job at United.

Gary Neville has played down his chances of taking over at United and claimed that he is completely focused on training his new team.

“From a long-term perspective I would never look at that or future jobs,” he insisted. “I’m focused completely on the next two training sessions and the team to pick for Wednesday.

“We all have dreams but the only way you get there is focusing on the individual bits one at a time.”

The former Red Devil also talked about his playing days and recollected memories of facing Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium. The 40-year-old hailed Valencia fans and called for their support.

“I understand, from playing against Valencia, the passion and intimidation of the fans and I want to recreate and harness that,” he said.

“I’m aware of the traditions here at Valencia – I’ve played out here a few times against some fantastic wingers.
One of the former leading presenters at Sky Sports, Gary Neville knows the enormity of the task at hand and also to deliver results as soon as possible.

“I understand my responsibility is to appraise the players as quickly as possible and pick the right system that gets us winning matches right away, irrespective of style.

“On Sunday afternoon when I received this offer it represented a challenge that I couldn’t refuse.”

Gary Neville was also the assistant manager to England’s boss Roy Hodgson. Neville will continue to serve the Three Lions during the international breaks and the upcoming European Championships in France next year.

“When I spoke to Roy Hodgson he was incredibly supportive and positive and enthusiastic.

“He understood completely the opportunity for myself and was wholly supportive that I should do it. We’ve got two games in March, which are in an international break when Valencia don’t play.

“From my point of view, I wanted to continue to complete my job through to Euro 2016 and everyone is completely understanding that Valencia will be my priority 95 percent of the time.”

On Saturday, Gary Neville will make his managerial debut. He faces his first tough test in his first match in-charge as Valencia play host to Luis Enrique’s treble winning Barcelona side.

Fantasy Football Start Em & Sit Em NFL Week 13: CJ Anderson & DeMarco Murray

Fantasy Football Start Em & Sit Em NFL Week 13 2015 imagesFor many fantasy football leagues, this week is the last of the regular season. Playoffs are coming, and so it’s time to fight for that final win. For those playing Draft Kings…well, you get to win money. So set your lineups. Here are my picks for Week 13:

Start—C.J. Anderson/Ronnie Hillman, RB, Denver Broncos: There have been an unusually high amount of injuries this season, so a lot of you are down to midseason reserves. If that’s the case, there’s a very good chance you had the opportunity to pick up one of these guys. I know I said I would never start a Denver running back again, but these guys just keep finding their way back to my heart.

With Brock Osweiler at quarterback, Gary Kubiak is running the ball a lot more, and all of a sudden, these guys are finding success. It kind of reminds you of Anderson’s breakout at the end of last season.

The best part is, you could legitimately start one or both of these guys. Kubiak likes to use both about evenly. Anderson came alive last weekend against the Patriots, and Hillman has actually been playing relatively well for a couple of weeks now.

If you have one of these guys, it’s time to give them a go. Or, if your league-mates are historically bad at what they do, maybe you can still pick one of these guys up on waivers.

Sit—DeMarco Murray, RB, Philadelphia Eagles: Before I saw anything about Murray, I think it should be noted that the Eagles are on a three-game losing streak with the three teams being the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Detroit Lions. The New England Patriots will make it four, and this time Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake won’t be there to get everyone riled up at halftime.

With no touchdowns over the course of the losing streak and only nine combined fantasy points against the Lions and Bucs, Murray isn’t exactly turning any fantasy heads. The Pats haven’t had the best run defense over the past three games (well, mainly against the two gentlemen above), but it’s still tough to run on them at home. If you have anyone else ready to go, you may want to consider giving them the nod.

Nick Kyrgios Season Recap & 2016 Preview

0

nick kyrgios season recap 2016 preview 2015 tennis imagesNick Kyrgios established himself as a star on the ATP Tour in 2014 when, as a 19-year old, he made the Wimbledon quarterfinals at the expense of both Richard Gasquet and Rafael Nadal. The Aussie followed up his performance at the All England Club with Grand Slam success at Melbourne Park in 2015, making the quarters of that tournament as well. However, Kyrgios is still a player who has a long way to go before he can start being looked at as a serious threat to make the final of a major – and that is not just due to problems with immaturity.

Kyrgios went just 36-30 on the ATP Tour in 2015, and his efforts did not include a title, not even at the 250 level. Many might be quick to dismiss the lackluster record as due to immaturity, a perspective that may have limited insight into what is causing Kyrgios’ lack of success. The Aussie, who often seems to pout on court, is well-known for making very off-handed remarks during a match in Montreal against Stan Wawrinka, remarks that pertained to the Swiss player’s girlfriend.

However, immaturity is just one point of view on a developing player and its relationship to winning is not always clear. From a completely different perspective, Kyrgios simply does not have the body-type that you would look at to win majors – something that is physical as opposed to mental.

Looking at all the Grand Slam results so far in this decade, you find the following men’s singles champions (listed with their heights and Grand Slam totals from 2010 to 2015 inclusive):

Roger Federer: 6’1″, 2 titles
Novak Djokovic: 6’1″, 9 titles
Andy Murray: 6’3″, 2 titles
Rafael Nadal: 6’1″, 8 titles
Stan Wawrinka: 6’0″, 2 titles
Marin Cilic: 6’6″, 1 title

When you compile these stats, it becomes pretty clear that a low center of gravity is helpful in tennis to a certain extent. You can’t be so short as to take power out of your game, but being about 6’0″ to 6’1″ is where you want to be. After all, 21 of the 24 majors won since the 2010 Australian Open has gone to players in this very-very limited height range.

Reasons for this phenomenon – I can only speculate on. But it’s my opinion, for starters, that the taller players are more injury prone. Sure, lightning can strike for Cilic as it did in Flushing Meadows, but the stress on the body from winning so many high-level matches lead to significant injuries that took him out of the game entirely for a long stretch shortly afterward.

A similar point could be made about what happened to Juan Martin del Potro, who is also 6’6″ after he won the 2009 US Open. Delpo dumped Federer; Delpo made the ATP World Tour Finals, and then Delpo missed almost a year. It seems that when a 6’6″ giant in tennis wins a Grand Slam, he does not follow it up with another one. Instead, he hits the sidelines with some kind of ailment shortly thereafter.

But even when a taller player is healthy, the Slams are arduous when it comes to expending energy. I think the taller you are, the more fatigue-prone you are in the very late rounds of majors. Taller players are heavier, it takes more energy for them to move their bodies, and they can’t win a war of attrition in the late rounds against the lighter players like Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, and Wawrinka. I think this is because these players are able to conserve energy better throughout the whole tournament while players like Milos Raonic, Tomas Berdych, Robin Soderling, John Isner, and Kevin Anderson simply cannot do that.

Kyrgios isn’t exactly a mega-giant as his height is only 6’4″. However, since the start of 2010 there has only been one player that tall or taller that has won a major.

While players of comparable height, like Soderling and Berdych, have made Grand Slam finals since the start of this decade those players still showed more potential than Kyrgios in earlier parts of their careers. Soderling, who is the same height as Kyrgios, won an ATP title (Lyon 2004) just after he turned 20 years old. Berdych, who is 6’5″, won Palermo 2004 before he was 20 and he won the 2005 Paris Masters shortly after he turned 20. Kyrgios’ results are lagging behind the results of a couple of the better players from the last decade that are similar in height.

You can say that Kyrgios, who is now closer to 21 than 20, is just immature and obscure his results with that very abstract variable, but I really don’t think that immaturity is the core problem. Andre Agassi wasn’t the most mature player, but he was still taking down titles as a teenager – a lot of them in fact.

The Aussie finished the 2015 season as the World No. 30, and he might have a future ranked that high – and higher. However, I got the Big Four running circles around this guy for a couple of years still, especially if they meet in best-of-five-set matches. Then I got Kei Nishikori, Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric, and Hyeon Chung keeping Kyrgios out of the Grand Slam championships for as long as the Aussie is trying to win them.

Kyrgios should not be considered an heir-apparent to the World No. 1 ranking, nor should he be considered a threat to win majors in his career. He simply is not the body type that the tour favors in general. On top of that, the drama he seems to cause himself and his on-court pouting only adds to the challenges he will face.

Kyrgios is different than a lot of players on tour, because of his style and attitude. But, while his fans might wish, hope, and dream, they shouldn’t expect much out the Aussie in the upcoming 2016 season.

Harry Styles Loses Tattoo Roulette & Dana White Bringing Ronday Rousey Back To Holly Holm

harry styles loses tattoo roulette 2015 gossipOn Thursday night, boy band One Direction appeared on The Late Show with James Corden. While there, the boys played a game of Tattoo Roulette with the host. In this game, each of the band members and James had to choose one of five boxes. Four of these boxes had the word “safe” inside of it while the fifth one had “tattoo” written inside. Unfortunately, whoever ended up with the “tattoo” box was forced to get inked on the air.

All of the band members agreed to the terms, with James saying he would get “1D” tattooed if he was the one to choose the specified box and the boys of One Direction agreeing to get “Late, Late” tattooed on them if any of them were the unlucky one to choose the box.

While Harry, Louis and Liam are not newbies to the tattoo scene, both Niall and host James do not have any tattoos and therefore, were rightfully nervous before choosing their boxes. James pointed out Niall’s nerves saying, “your hands are actually shaking.” Niall tried to play it cool and joked, “It’s my first time on TV.” On the other hand, Harry claimed to be completely “fine” as he proceeded to participate in the game.

Fortunately Harry, who was the most relaxed out of the group, was the one who ended up picking the “tattoo” box. Thus right there in the middle of The Late Show set, Harry got the words “Late, Late” inked on his left arm. Luckily for him he is already so inked up, so adding one more really wasn’t a big deal.

dana white bringing ronda rousey back to holly holm 2015 gossipMeanwhile, President of the UFC Dana White revealed to ESPN Radio that there is definitely going to be a rematch between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm.

Since her defeat, usually outspoken Ronda has been maintaining a low profile as she recovers from her unexpected loss. In Mid-November Ronda, 28, lost to her opponent Holly, 34, just under a minute into the second round of UFC 193. At that point, Ronda was on a 12-fight winning streak, and this marked her first MMA career loss. In addition, Ronda was also taken to the hospital immediately after the fight, as it was a forceful kick to the head that ultimately lead to her defeat.

While on ESPN Radio, Dana stated, “I think that if we didn’t make the rematch, me and Lorenzo [Fertitta, UFC CEO] should probably lose our promoter’s license.” Going on to say, “That’s the fight that’s going to happen. I don’t know when, but that’s the fight.”

Dana also explained, “Ronda Rousey has gone undefeated; she’s taken the sport to another level and beaten the best women in the world in 14 seconds, 30 seconds. She deserves a rematch. Holly agrees she deserves a rematch. We’ll figure it out.”

At this point there have been no talks on when the rematch will occur. However, UFC has confirmed that it is no longer a question of if, but rather when. Until then, undoubtedly both Ronda and Holly will be training harder than they ever have before.

Packers Epic Comeback aided by Phantom Facemask

Packers Epic Comeback aided by Phantom Facemask 2015 nfl imagesGreen Bay Packers fans woke up elated on Friday morning after Green Bay came back from 20 points down to shock the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football. Lions fans woke up pissed off at the world and more directly at the refs who gave the Pack one last chance with zeroes on the clock.

The epic Hail Mary from Rodgers to Rodgers never happens unless the officiating crew has mercy on Green Bay by throwing a flag on Detroit for a facemask.

The Lions defense did exactly what was necessary to get the win despite letting the Pack back into the game in the second half.

On the second to last play of the game as time ran out, Aaron Rodgers was sacked by Detroit’s Devin Taylor. That’s the worst way for an offense to go out. Not even getting the ball in flight for a jump ball in the end zone.

The Lions did their job, only they got popped with the facemask call that gave Aaron Rodgers one more shot to launch the ball about 60 yards in the air for the win. Detroit’s nightmare was complete when Richard Rodgers came down with the ball for the touchdown. 27-23 Packers, ballgame.

Detroit fans are livid of course while Packers fans say this game is just payback for the Fail Mary from 2012.

I don’t blame Lions fan for feeling cheated. I’m sure they see this call as a gift to one of the biggest names in the game, Aaron Rodgers. No way Matt Stafford gets the same call on the last play of the game. That had to be the general feeling in Motor City on Friday morning. I’d agree.

As an unbiased observer I’d rather see the refs swallow the whistle on a last gasp play. No matter if one team has mounted a tremendous comeback, just like we saw in TNF with Green Bay. If the comeback falls short then so be it.

Needing a flag to help turn a nice try into a comeback for the ages takes a little mystique out of the game.

Of course we can go back through the game film and find numerous infractions that weren’t called. Even some that were similar to the play in question. Pics on Twitter showed a few from a Packers defender basically reaching inside an opponent’s eye socket through the facemask in a previous game this year.

No, call in that one. Thing is, everything gets magnified in the final minutes of a game.

The pattern in many historical comebacks is for the game officials to resist the urge to toss a yellow hanky when the chips are down. Or even pick the flag up. Think the Immaculate Reception and the Music City Miracle. Those game winning touchdowns could have been called back. But we know they weren’t.

In today’s NFL, defenses have a hard enough time stopping offenses who get the benefit of the League trying to protect the QB and receivers. If defenders are going to be flagged for ticky tack stuff in the last few seconds of every comeback attempt, then offenses end up with all the chips stacked in their favor.

Detroit made the play of the night when they sacked Rodgers with no time left. The best QB in the game only got a chance to be the hero because the refs helped him. For that reason today’s great quarterbacks can never compare to the Montanas, Aikmans, Moons, Kellys, etc.

The old school quarterbacks had to earn their fourth quarter comebacks. Just remember that the next time you see one of our modern passers with an unbelievable amount of wins after bringing his team back late in games. Not as hard to do now as it was in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s.

It sucks for Detroit to have a game end like that, not to mention their three game winning streak being no more.

But at least fans got to see an awesome Thursday Night Football game for once. And before long the record books will simply show this ending as another bookmark in the legendary career of Aaron Rodgers.

Only Lions fans will have the phantom facemask call burned into their memories forever.

Okay so the beef is not over (I mean honestly did you really think it would be). Neo Soul singer Erykah Badu truly has no chill when it comes to telling it like it is and being that she is a kind of honorary hip hop head because of her romantic relationships with famous rappers; she takes the music genre pretty seriously.

Which is probably the reason she keeps shading Iggy Azalea. After clearly dissing her in a huge way at this year’s 2015 Soul Train Music Awards and then Iggy clapping back, Erykah checked the Australian rapper via Twitter, once again.

“Well that’ll be the LAST time I send an uber for you! I can guaran DAMN tee you THAT.”

Not only did she get the last word on the situation, but she also made no apologies for shading Iggy in the first place.

I mean it’s Erykah Badu so why would we even expect anything less?

tank apologizes to tyrese 2015 gossipTank Apologizes to Tyrese for Twitter Rant

Egos are a dime a dozen in the entertainment industry, especially when you are a man who is issued a challenge by another man that seemingly thinks he’s the prototype for success.

Some people are saying that about singer Tyrese, who’s latest independently produced and pushed album has done exceptionally well. So well apparently that he is issuing challenges to other R&B singers to step their game up and, essentially, get on his level. But not everyone sees his charge as a means to lift others up.

“Here’s my R&B Challenge #TAG the REAL R&B Soul Singers and see if they will “Accept” the challenge……… In their response, they just have to write “I accept” #BlackRoseAlbum has one ft Snoop…… On my song #DumbShit otherwise you already know what I came with – pure R&B Soul….”

Tank, who is his fellow group member and a powerhouse artist himself, checked his friend for still bragging about the success of his Black Rose album. He initially posted this to his social media:

“No, the challenge is shade! None of us have heard of Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Alicia Keys, etc!! It’s not a challenge he’s just indirectly flaunting his success!..lol. Which is fine but don’t act like you the only one doing R&B Music!.. lol.”

Well, it seems that he has had a change of heart and being that he and Tyrese are actually close friends, he posted this to his Instagram today.

“When you give negativity the power to believe that it can be effective then it begins to work overtime!! Negativity would love for this to be over! It would love to destroy bonds of close to 20 yrs! It loves it so much it’ll use you, the haters, to keep it going! The people who thrive on negativity will try to keep this going, but we honestly don’t hear you!”

I don’t really know what this means as he is the one who came with the negativity first. He is blaming other people for the shade he threw Tyrese’s way?

Maybe it was all fun and games.

leah remini sister harrassed by scientology 2015 gossipLeah Remini’s Sister Claims Harassment by the Church of Scientology

The saga that is actress Leah Remini’s public denouncement and war with Scientology continues to take very interesting turns. The most recent claim is that Scientologists harassed her sister after Leah’s departure from the organization.

Nicole Remini-Wiskow says that she and her daughter were targeted when her sister left the church in 2013. She told Radar Online:

“The church was calling me like crazy. When [Leah] was first declared a suppressive person they called me every day…I would hang up and then they would call me right back.”

She claims that they even called her then 15-year-old daughter. She is now saying that the harassment is back (it stopped before when she threatened to sue) with the release of Leah’s memoir, Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology. From her social media accounts being hacked to other mysterious happenings, Nicole believes that it is all the work of Scientologists.

“That was the weirdest thing that ever happened to me,” Remini-Wiskow said of the online attack.”

The Remini sisters have been a part of the Church of Scientology since they were eight and six years old. Nicole left the organization in 2000 and Leah credits her sister’s support as a big contributor to finally getting the courage up to leave the church 13 years later.

NHL Recap & Weekend Preview: Drew Miller Out

0

nhl recap weekend preview drew miller out 2015 imagesnhl recap weekend preview drew miller out 2015 imagesThe weekend is almost here, and that means it’s time to look back on the last week of developments in the NHL, the standings, and the upcoming weekend of games.

One recent headline at NHL.com delivers some bad news for the fans of the Detroit Red Wings. According to a recent article, both Teemu Pulkkinen and Drew Miller will be missing several weeks of play. The former will miss “will miss 6-8 weeks with a dislocated shoulder” while the latter “will be out six weeks with a broken jaw.” The injuries were suffered in a victory over the Arizona Coyotes this week. Both players are forwards that, prior to their injuries, added to Detroit’s depth. But between the two it is likely the absence of Pulkkinen that Detroit will miss more as he had chipped in on offense this season with 11 points in 24 games.

Switching to good news, reports this week included an update for the Connor McDavid injury. The Edmonton Oilers’ rookie sensation is said to be “recovering better than expected from a broken left clavicle.” McDavid’s absence has made other less talented rookies the focal point for the Calder Trophy. In truth, it would likely take a return in January and an amazing season after that for the top pick to re-emerge as the favorite for the award.

According to the website of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Jon Cooper has been signed to a contract extension, one that the franchise called “a multi-year contract.” The franchise, in their article, cites an “especially remarkable” season in 2014/15, one that saw the Lightning advance to the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals through the Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadiens, and the New York Rangers. The announcement comes after 26 games in TB’s current schedule, games that they have underachieved in when compared to pre-season expectations. Currently, Tampa Bay sit 6th in the Atlantic Division despite pre-season expectations to finish first.

In the standings, the Metro Division features the closest race at this point. The New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals both have 37 points with the latter having played three fewer games. Washington are currently the hottest team in the NHL as they have both won six in a row and claimed 17 points in their last ten games.

The Atlantic Division is business as usual as the weekend starts. The Montreal Canadiens have been the front-runners there since they opened the season with a lengthy winning streak. Currently, Montreal are playing without Carey Price, another injured player who is expected be out of the lineup until mid-January. However, the Habs still hold a 9-point lead in the Atlantic, one that might get chipped away at a bit while Price is out.

In the Central Division, it’s been all Dallas of late. The current Western Conference favorites, according to betting odds (SkyBet), are 8-1-1 in their last ten games. Those winning ways have seen the Stars open up an eight-point lead over the St. Louis Blues while pre-season favorites, Chicago, are buried down in 5th place at the moment.

Things are tighter in the Pacific, but Los Angeles are currently holding their own. The Kings have a small 3-point lead on San Jose with both Arizona and Vancouver not far behind either. The Anaheim Ducks, another underachieving pre-season favorite, are buried deep as well as the offensively-challenged club is down in 5th spot.

Friday night will see San Jose in Anaheim in the evening’s late game. Starting time is at 7 pm PT with television coverage available in Canada on SportsNet.

Dallas are the only division leader scheduled to play on Friday night. They are completing a road swing through Western Canada that saw them lose to Calgary and defeat Vancouver. Edmonton should be easy pickings for Dallas given that the Oilers are a depleted club and that the Stars simply do not drop many games on the road, even against much better competition than what Edmonton can put on the ice right now.

CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada programming with the feature, as always, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The bottom-dwellers of the Atlantic Division are unworthy of nationally-televised games except for the fact that they are based in Canada’s largest city. Fortunately, SportsNet will feature the Canadiens at Carolina concurrent to the Leafs’ game. Toronto will be in St. Louis to take on the Blues at 7 pm ET on Saturday, the same start time as Montreal vs. Carolina, with Boston at Vancouver to wrap up CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada (10 pm ET/7pm PT).

Liverpool ready to win titles claims Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool ready to win titles claims Jurgen Klopp 2015 imagesLiverpool’s Jurgen Klopp believes that his team can challenge for the trophies if they work hard and stay injury-free.

Liverpool defeated Ronald Koeman’s Southampton in the Capital One Cup tie. The Merseyside giants were rampant in the match that ended 6 – 1. Klopp took charge of Anfield in October after Brendan Rodgers’ removal from the helm at the club.

According to the former Borussia Dortmund boss, Liverpool can compete for major silverwares if they keep their head down and work hard. They would also need some luck with injuries in order to be consistent until the end of the season.

“We do not have magic ideas,” the German told Sky Sports. “It’s about working hard. You cannot be in Liverpool because of the weather, so it must be because of the football club.

“We need luck with injuries, but the squad is strong enough for us to be challengers.

Klopp has won seven of his last 11 matches as a Liverpool boss. They have advanced to the semi-final of the Capital One Cup, and they are set to face Stoke City in the next round. The winner between Manchester City and Everton will make it to the final, and it would be a very interesting affair if either of those sides potentially meet Liverpool at Wembley.

“At the moment, we don’t have to be any more than that. If you shoot the ball between the posts, it’s better than when you don’t do it.”

Sturridge, who netted two goals, was making his first start since October 4. Klopp admitted that he would have to continue to manage the injury-hit England striker’s minutes. The England international has struggled a lot with injuries, but he has always been a consistent goal scorer since making his debut for the Reds.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about this [Sturridge’s fitness],” he added. “We try to do what we can to keep him fit.

“Sometimes it can be bad luck, even for a long period, but he felt good during the game and at the end of it.

“He doesn’t have to play in all the games, but if we can decide when is the right moment to fight, and when is the right moment for recovery, everything should be okay.”

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League table, only six points behind the league leaders. The Merseyside giants will travel to Newcastle on Sunday for their 15th league match of the season. The Reds will hope to be in a comfortable position at the start of the second half of the campaign. Liverpool have comparatively easier teams to face in the busiest time of the season, and thus it will give them an edge over the other contenders for the top four finish. They can certainly climb higher by the end of this year and even challenge for the Premier League title if they keep similar form.

‘Empire’ 210 Et tu Brute? aka Gullible Hakeem

Empir' 210 Et tu Brute 2015 hakeem images“Empire’s” Hakeem is a gullible ass bitch. Okay, I had to get that out. If you can’t tell from that statement, “Empire” was something else this week, and for a few moments during the mid-season finale, it recaptured the essence of its first season.

With Alex out of the picture, Cookie is having a hard time finding a new venue for her cookout. But that will soon be an easy fix because the American Sound Awards a.k.a. ASA nominations are here, and when Hakeem gets nominated, they’ll have not problem finding a place. But I’m going to tell you now that doesn’t happen.

In fact, Freda Gatz is the one who is nominated (along with others) for the award, which is crazy to me because I don’t ever remember her officially releasing a song. That aside, Hakeem is upset and pouts and acts like a little momma’s boy.

Now, how is Hakeem a gullible ass bitch you ask? Well, there’s no need in waiting until the end of this recap to tell you- He’s the reason that Lucious loses his place as CEO and Chairman of Empire. Yep, that’s right, Hakeem had a chance to save his father’s company from the hands of Mimi and…are you ready for it… Camilla, but he deliberately doesn’t give his father the vote he needs. He sits there and remembers all the things is father did to him and instead of giving a “nay” at ousting his daddy, he gives an “I.”

And let’s talk about Mimi. She, apparently, has been in cahoots with Camilla (Naomi Campbell) from the very beginning. In fact, Hakeem’s ex-lover is Mimi’s wife and is back on the scene. Mimi meets with Lucious and during said meeting, records him saying, pretty much, that “the board ain’t shit” and he doesn’t need them to do anything with Empire. She has had it in for him from the beginning, and he fell into her plan perfectly. Now since all the Lyons hold a share in the company, they along with a certain number of votes from the rest of the board would give them what they need to keep Lu in power. But Hakeem is too in his feelings to see that.

It’s really messed up the way things go down for Lucious…AND for Rhonda, which brings me to Anika’s stalker ass. She continues to visits Rhonda, which should raise a flag but doesn’t. This time around, Rhonda tells her that Lu refers to their baby as “the heir” and she does not like that shit. And we see how much Anika doesn’t like when she knocks over a stuffed animal when Rhonda leaves the room. The big story here is that we are pretty sure she is the person who sneaks into the house later that night (while Dre is dealing with Hakeem’s betrayal) trips the alarm causing Rhonda to come out of her room and pushes her down the stairs. It doesn’t  look good for the soon to be mom.

Let me say here that the total 180 the writers have done with Anika’s character is confusing and disheartening. I mean, they didn’t even set it up that she was capable of this kind of behavior and I don’t understand the reason for this storyline. She would be better off back with Lu if they were looking for a way to keep her on the show.

Speaking of Lucious, he walks in on Jamal and Sky “sharing a moment.” He (and we) find out that they not only kissed but had sex, which makes Lucious proud because that means she “fixed” Jamal. They perform their new song later in the episode and then Charlamagne tha God, who is so corny and so whack, guest starring as himself, comes out and asks Sky why she feels it’s alright for her to all of a sudden start doing “black music” when she is clearly pop. This whole scene is obviously so that he can be himself and it feels forced.

A lot of the stuff they do on Empire feels forced. I was taught to write for necessity not because something sounds good or is clever. Don’t get me wrong there is a time and place for that, but too often this show makes time for moments that have no place.

Bringing it back to the major shocker of the night, after Hakeem broke his daddy’s heart by siding with the board, Cookie, who stands outside the office with Camilla, looks at her and spits in her face.

Other noteworthy moments of this night are the following:

Although they slept together, Sky and Jamal are not an item because she doesn’t want to change him, and she knows he’ll never love her the way he loves a man.

Da Brat guest stars as Jazzie, one of Cookie’s fellow inmates whom she promises a record deal when her time is up. That, however,  is a no-go because she now has a life sentence for killing her cellmate over some toothpaste.

Since the ASA’s are announced throughout the day, the saving grace after “losing” Empire is Lucious being nominated for Song of the Year for “Boom, Boom, Boom.”

See there’s your silver lining. The moment Cookie and Lu share in which she calms him is one of the best of the episode because it shows their chemistry as actors and the connection their characters have to each other.

I have to admit that there are some good storyline set-ups for the rest of the season, so hopeful the folks behind the scenes (as in the words of my girl RuPaul) “don’t fuck it up.”

‘Modern Family’ 708 Junk Drawers

modern family 708 junk drawers 2015 imagesThis week on “Modern Family,” everyone, except Luke and Manny, who are not in this episode, come face to face with the realities of their relationships or as it’s called in therapy, ‘Cleaning Out Your Junk Drawer.’

Gloria won a session with a therapist/author at a silent auction, and while she is super excited, the other people involved can’t say the same. Mitch and Cam, Claire and Phil and Jay all attend but as far as letting their feelings out in the open or has the book says their “emotional junk drawers,” they don’t plan to let that happen.

While the adults are cooped up in the Dunphy’s house for the next three hours, Alex and Haley spend some sister time together. It is refreshing to see their evolution as siblings. With Alex in college experiencing college stuff, it puts them on the same playing field so to speak. A field that gives both of them the courage to confide in each other about their “love lives.” And that’s exactly what they do. Alex tells Haley about the high school playboy, and Luke’s friend Reuben and Haley tells her about Andy, which totally blows her sister away. Especially since we find out that they actually had sex at the sexy house from the last episode.

Back at the house, Jay is determined to get out of talking about his feelings which is causing him to miss Sunday Football. He protests he complains, and the only thing left for him to do is “fake it,” and that’s what he does. Mitch is determined not to be the “sideshow gay couple”, so he tells Cam to “keep a low profile” and “no bedroom stuff.” Claire, like her brother and father, thinks the whole thing is stupid, but she copes by turning it into a competition. In her mind, she and Phil are going to win because they are the most put together.

During one of the exercises, Jay sees it as the perfect time to get “emotional” and retreats to the bathroom. The rest of the crew find it touching that he opened up and rush to the door to make sure he is okay, especially since he was holding his heart. They pound on the door for him to let them in and their worry rises when he doesn’t’ open. Phil comes to the rescue with a bobby pin, and when they open the door, Jay has earphones on watching the game on his tablet. Caught!

At the restaurant, Haley and Alex decide that they need to get themselves together and vow that they each will end it with the men in their lives. Haley texts Andy who thinks that it is a booty call. They meet in her car and talk about what happened. They are both very clear that it cannot happen again, and so they go their separate ways believing that it is over between them. In the meantime, Alex has broken things off with Rueben. She “did it quickly like ripping off one of his incredible Hulk band aids.” She calls to let her sister know and to confirm that she has done the same and asks her, “Did you do it” and we see that yes, she did indeed “do it” as Andy is laying right next to her. So much for that plan.

They have moved on from Jay’s bluff back at Claire and Phil’s place and are now at the point where they each have to write down what bothers them about the other. This is where things get interesting. Phil claims there is nothing about Claire he doesn’t like, but Cam and Mitch can think of a few things. This causes Claire to feel a certain way especially when Phil says her tepee joke is childish. She rebuts,“Really cause you’re the one who can’t stop playing with his pogo stick” to which he says “you know what maybe you’d be happier if you played with my pogo stick once in a while” to which Mitch says, “What’s sad is they’re actually talking about a pogo stick.” It’s an intense scene, and it climaxes moments later when Mitch tells Cam in the midst of their argument, “When I have to nag you it makes me feel like I am your mother which could be why it’s been a month since we played with each other’s pogo sticks.” Yes, Mitch not only embarrasses the hell out of himself but also broke his own “no bedroom stuff” rule.

In the end, after the therapist leaves, rather rudely, because of a family issue, Jay brings is all to a close when he genuinely opens up about his father teaching him how to be a man. He breaks down; Gloria comforts him, and it brings a calm over the entire room.

In the closing scene, everyone makes an effort to make the changes their partner suggests, but as any of us in a long-term relationship, those changes are usually short-lived.
