French Open Overall Winners & Losers 2015

french open 2015 winners losers images

The 2015 French Open, the terminus of the clay court season, is now over as Stan Wawrinka is the new king of clay court tennis with his surprise title at Roland Garros. Looking back at the last couple of months there are some clear winners and losers on the men’s tours. In reflecting on the results from Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Paris, and the other smaller tournaments here’s a look at the new Top Ten on tour and who won and lost during the clay court season.

novak djokovic french open loser 2015

1. Novak Djokovic – Loser

Djokovic, although he skipped Madrid, did win both Monte Carlo and Rome. That being the case, he stood to go undefeated during the clay court season entering the French Open. That an undefeated clay court season appeared imminent especially seemed to be the case given that Rafael Nadal was playing well below his normal level.

However Djokovic lost the final to Wawrinka and in doing so the World No. 1 missed an amazing opportunity to complete his career Grand Slam. Even with the Rome and Monte Carlo titles, Djokovic has to be considered a loser following the 2015 clay court season as nothing but a French Open title would have made the Serb’s campaign on the dirt a successful one.

roger federer loser french open 2015

2. Roger Federer – Loser

Roger Federer will remain the World No. 2 on Monday when the rankings update. However popular opinion regarding the Swiss Maestro‘s ability to compete on tour, at the highest level, will probably dive a bit after tennis pundits and fans reflect on the last couple of months.

Federer didn’t have much in Monte Carlo as he fell in the round of sixteen to Gael Monfils. In Istanbul, the World No. 2 claimed a title however the event was merely a part of the 250-series on tour and winning the tournament didn’t prove much. Then, in Madrid, Fed practically no-showed the tournament as he lost an opening coin-toss to Nick Kyrgios.

The only event that Federer lived up to expectations in was Rome, a tournament where he lost to Djokovic in the final. But even though Federer beat Wawrinka in Rome he did not back up the win against the same opponent in Paris. In fact Federer had the cushiest of draws in Paris over the last two weeks and still failed to make the semifinals.

Following the French Open and the clay court season, the former World No. 1 looks as though he might be a little easier to pick off during the upcoming grass court season. Fair to say, no one in the Top 20 will dread seeing Fed’s name in an upcoming match.

andy murray winner french open 2015

3. Andy Murray – Winner

Murray missed Monte Carlo a couple months back however he was very active on tour thereafter.

For starters, the Scot claimed his very first clay court title ever in Munich through Roberto Bautista Agut and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

More impressively, Murray then won Madrid the very next week to add another Masters Series title to his resume. Despite having entered the Madrid draw on limited rest Murray wrecked three Top Tenners in straight sets from the quarters onward, namely Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, and Rafael Nadal.
While the Scot withdrew from Rome’s third round, it was an understandable move as he was in his third event in three weeks.

Murray, during the 2015 clay court season, proved himself to be a tough out in Paris once again as he extended Djokovic to five sets in the semifinals. But despite the loss the World No. 3 had his career best clay court season with two titles added to his French Open semifinal appearance.

The Scot, in the months ahead, appears poised to do some damage on his best surfaces, those being grass and cement.

stan wawrinka french open winner 2015

4. Stan Wawrinka – Winner

Stan Wawrinka is the biggest winner following the clay court season. The Swiss may have failed to defend his title in Monte Carlo however he’s undoubtedly on top of the world following his French Open victory. Furthermore, with the second Grand Slam title, Wawrinka has emerged as a more significant player in his generation than he was before the 2015 clay court season.

Wawrinka, after falling in the first round of the 2014 French Open, turned a net gain of 1990 ranking points in Paris. That has shot him up the Top Ten and he has to be the happiest tennis player in the world at the moment.

kei nishikori french open roland garros loser 2015

5. Kei Nishikori – Loser

Nishikori’s clay court season has to be given a minimal fail. Japan’s top player enjoyed success at ATP Barcelona, a 500-series event, however otherwise Nishikori did not see a final- let alone win one.

His result in Roland Garros has to be considered a disappointment as he fell in the quarters to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In the broader picture, Nishikori also failed to beat anyone more proven than David Ferrer during the clay court events.

The current World No. 5 did improve drastically on his 2014 French Open result. However he had a draw at Roland Garros that probably should have taken him to the semifinals. That is especially true given that he had a walkover win in Paris in the third round, something that should have kept him fresh for the later rounds.

With the title in Barca and with the French Open improvement, there are things for Nishikori to feel positive about. However a little bit more should have been achieved and, for that reason, he’s a clay court season loser.

tomas berdych french open loser 2015

6. Tomas Berdych – Loser

Berdych’s clay court season has to be considered a failure largely because of his fourth round exit in Roland Garros. Berdych was opposite to Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray in the Paris draw – about all he could have realistically hoped for.

Therefore losing to Tsonga in the fourth round had to be stinging for the Czech No. 1, a player who could have hoped to have been the finalist on the weak half of the draw at the 2015 French Open. With no titles from the last couple of months, it’s hard to see Berdych taking any consolation in his runnerup finish from Monaco.

david ferrer french open loser 2015

7. David Ferrer – Loser

Ferrer is still consisently putting big dents into big tournaments. Accordingly, he made the quarterfinals or semifinals of every clay court event that he entered during the clay court season.

However time is ticking for the 33-year old and he’s still missing some hardware. An adept clay courter, Ferrer saw another season come and go without any titles added to his trophy case. For that reason, he has to be considered a loser on the 2015 clay court season.

milos raonic loser of french open 2015

8. Milos Raonic – Loser

Raonic has to be considered one of the biggest losers on the 2015 clay court season. Most noteably the Canadian had to miss Roland Garros outright with foot surgery, a circumstance that sent him on a small ranking slide. However, even with the events that he played, there is no result that did anything to prove that he’s a force to be reckoned with on clay.

The biggest scalp that Raonic claimed during the clay court season was that of Tommy Robredo’s, a player who has lost some punch so far in 2015. Accordingly, the 2015 season did nothing to bolster Roanic’s reputation, in fact it further highlighted that his body might not be built for the rigors of ATP tennis.

marin cilic french open loser 2015

9. Marin Cilic – Loser

Cilic is clinging on to a spot in the Top Ten on tour largely due to one result, his victory from Flushing Meadows last season. Without that, Cilic would not be in the upper echelon of ATP tennis and a ranking slide appears to be in the cards at summer’s end.

Cilic entered a ton of events during the 2015 clay court season but, in doing so, all he did was highlight how off his game is right now. Losses to Juan Monaco, Victor Estrella Burgos, Fernando Verdasco, Guillermo Garcia Lopez, and Santiago Giraldo suggest that Cilic’s true playing level is outside of the Top 30 at present.

The Croat appears to be a high seed that no one will be scared to face in Wimbledon, Canada, Cincinnati, and Flushing Meadows.

french open loser rafael nadal 2015 tennis

10. Rafael Nadal – Loser

The 2015 clay court season revealed Nadal’s mortality. Questions regarding the Spaniard’s ability to challenge for the World No. 1 ranking have to be raised now that he is 29-years old and fading. Losses in all five clay court events that he entered proved that Nadal is not presently the player that he used to be as he’s just fallen to the number 10 spot on the ATP rankings.

Barcelona clinch fifth European championship: Luis Enrique Staying

0

barcelona win fifth championship league 2015 imagesOver the last decade, FC Barcelona have lifted the Champions League trophy for the fourth time. The Catalan giants are the most dominant and successful team in the recent history of the tournament.

It couldn’t have been a better start for Luis Enrique’s career at the helm of Barca. The former Barcelona player attained a lot of success in his playing days and alike Guardiola his managerial stint has started in a glorious way. Juve boss, Massimiliano Allegri, also had an opportunity to earn this honor in his debut season with the Italian champions but his team couldn’t cope with the attacking prowess of the Barcelona front three.

The Champions League final in Berlin ended 3 – 1 with goals from Suarez, Neymar, Rakitic and Juventus’s Morata. The Blaugrana giants broke the deadlock as early as the 4th minute when Rakitic squared the ball past Buffon. The Old Lady equalized in the 55th minute through the former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata. Luis Suarez netted a tap-in 13 minutes later to put Barca on the front foot again. The last few minutes very nervy for Camp Nou faithful before Neymar’s 90th minute strike which ensured their treble.

It has been a dream season Luis Suarez, who didn’t even feature in the last few Champions League tournaments. The Uruguayan carried Liverpool on his shoulders last season and earned them the berth for Champions League qualification and this season his hard work has paid off. The 28-year-old also managed to stay from any controversy despite coming face to face with his old nemesis Patrice Evra. It was also the first Champions League win for the Brazilian skipper, Neymar. The 23-year-old is now among a select few players to win both Copa Libertadores and Champions League.

It was Juventus’s sixth loss in a Champions League final. A team of Juve’s stature wouldn’t want to have such a record. Patrice Evra has featured in five Champions League finals with Monaco, Manchester United and Juventus but the Frenchman has won only one occasion.

It was a sad night for Andrea Pirlo and his numerous fans around the world. The Italian midfield maestro was in tears after the loss as it was his last match in the competition. The outgoing skipper of Barcelona, Xavi will to the Qatari club Al-Sadd after winning 24 major silverwares with his boyhood club. Many aspiring players can only dream to have such illustrious careers as Pirlo and Xavi.

Andres Iniesta yet again proved that he is one of the best big match players in the world. The Spaniard was named the ‘Man of the Match’ despite his time on the pitch was cut short because of substitution. After scoring a goal in the final, Neymar tied with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the top scorer award in Europe.

In the European competition, Barcelona are now tied with the five-time European champions, Liverpool and Bayern Munich and are only behind AC Milan (7) and Real Madrid (10).

Luis Enrique staying on as barcelona manager 2015Luis Enrique is set to continue as Barcelona’s manager after guiding the club to a treble in his debut season, according to the club’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, who also admitted the club are “closely monitoring” the Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Bartomeu said: “I have no doubt regarding Luis Enrique’s continuity. He is under contract and has done a magnificent job.

“I don’t see any impediments for him to continue in a team who have started a winning cycle. I see him as being very enthusiastic. If I am re-elected as president, one of the things I will do is offer Luis Enrique a contract extension.”

The 45-year-old head coach had cast doubt on his future, saying his position at the club would be discussed following Saturday’s Champions League final against Juventus. Victory for the Catalan club completed a treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League, despite difficulties earlier in the season which led to the coach being placed under pressure after a defeat to Real Sociedad in which he opted to rest Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Following that result, Bartomeu had called for presidential elections this summerto relieve “the tension Barça is going through”, but the outstanding end to the season, in which Barça beat Real Madrid to the La Liga title by two points, has seemingly made Luis Enrique’s position secure.

As Bartomeu told Sport: “There is no reason to break our contract with Enrique after he earned full marks for this season.”

Meanwhile, on Pogba, the club president said: “Pogba is an iconic player at Juventus and has a contract there – we have not tried to sign him but we are closely monitoring his progress.”

How Does Stan Wawrinka Rank Among the Greats Now?

stan wawrinka ranks among the greats 2015 french open

Stan Wawrinka, in what was an impressive upset, defeated Novak Djokovic on Sunday in the final of the 2015 French Open. The result is noteable in that it prevents Djokovic from claiming a career Grand Slam, an achievement that is considered one trademark of an all-time great player.

However one question that could be visited following the 2015 French Open doesn’t have to do with Djokovic at all: where does Wawrinka, a two-time Grand Slam champion, now fit among the all-time great players?

In answering the question, it has to be stated that Wawrinka’s career is still a work in progress. But I do wonder if his recent success in Grand Slams (he’s won two of the last six) might actually push the 30-year old closer to retirement. Wawrinka appears to be at his peak but if he feels as though he has self-actualized that might set the stage for calling his career a completed one.

novak djokovic rubs up stan wawrinka for 2015 french open

Putting that speculation aside, let’s look at what Wawrinka has accomplished in his career in three important categories:

Highest rank to date: World No. 3 (January 2014)
Grand Slam titles: 2 (2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open)
ATP Titles (including 2 Slams): 10 (only one Masters Series)

Neither Wawrinka’s highest ranking nor his ATP title count merit discussing the Swiss as worthy of inclusion on a SHORT list of all-time great players.
When comparing Wawrinka to the best ever, one has to admit that we’re looking at a much longer list of players than just a Top 10. Instead of dealing with gargantuan tennis names like Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, and John McEnroe we’re assessing Wawrinka against the lesser bright lights that have played on the ATP Tour.

From this point of view what’s definitely noteworthy with Wawrinka is the two majors. Noteably there have been numerous former World No. 1s that did not win two Grand Slam finals despite their best efforts.

Marcelo Rios, the Chilean who spent six weeks as the World No. 1 in 1998, is a case in point. Rios holds the unflattering distinction of being the only player in the history of the ATP rankings (they started in August 1973) to both hold top spot on tour and to have never won a Grand Slam singles title.

In Rios’ defence it probably should be pointed out that he lost to Petr Korda in the 1998 Australian Open final, a player who tested positive for Nandrolone a short time after winning the Aussie. However even if you were to vacate Korda’s result, that would still only give Rios one major title.

Should Wawrinka be considered better than Rios? What about other players who were ranked No. 1 for only a short time?

Carlos Moya, for example, spent a couple weeks ranked No. 1 during his career and, unlike Rios, he won a Grand Slam title (1998 French Open). However he only won the one title, having fallen in the final of the 1997 Aussie in his other major final appearance.

Other former World No. 1s with only one Grand Slam title include, comprehensively, the following:

Andy Roddick
Juan Carlos Ferrero
Thomas Muster

Wawrinka, though he’s never been ranked higher than third, has now won more majors than a handful of players that have been top ranked. That begs a question that I’ve pondered a few times before.

When assessing where a player fits on the all-time greats list, should one consider Grand Slam singles titles or highest ranking achieved (with some further consideration on how long the highest ranking was held for)?

If you go by the latter then you emphasize and are biased toward isolated results, albeit the ones in the toughest tournaments. If you go by the former you emphasize an entire year-long war instead of individual battles.

It’s my opinion that the latter is more important because winning a war is more impressive than winning a battle in my view.

There are plenty of players, like Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro for examples, that can win a Grand Slam tournament but only at great cost. Both of those players won the US Open, in 2009 and 2015 respectively, only to see costly injuries follow shortly thereafter. It’s my view that the best tennis players are those that can show up for every battle in the war with something in the tank afterwards.

Furthermore there are players who win majors that seemingly disappear a short time later. Thomas Johansson was like that in 2002. The Swede won the Australian Open that year and then lost in every single tournament, big or small, until ATP Stockholm 2004.

It seems that some players, perhaps satisfied with themselves, fade after a big win instead of chasing the World No. 1 ranking; and, to be honest, I think Wawrinka was a little like this in the first months of 2014.

After winning the Aussie last season, Wawrinka went on a bit of a hiatus. That hiatus that saw him lose in the rounds of sixteen in both Indian Wells and Miami to both Alexandr Dolgopolov and Kevin Anderson respectively. Arguably, it’s those results that prevented Stan from perhaps challenging for a higher ranking than what he achieved.

But whether Wawrinka will now fade following his French Open title or improve upon his career best ranking in the months ahead remains to be seen. However at this point I think the fair place to put Wawrinka on the all-time list is well down it.

He’s clearly better in my view than several of the non-World No. 1s that have only won one major, players like Michael Stich, Richard Krajicek, and Gaston Gaudio. However Wawrinka is still a cut below the very upper eschelon of tennis greats, players like Federer, Sampras, Nadal, Borg, Djokovic, and others.

At this point I think Wawrinka, with the second Grand Slam title, clearly makes the Top 50 of any list of greatest tennis players of the Open Era that can be taken seriously. More specifically, I think he belongs in the 35th to 45th range and he still has some time to improve on that if he’s still motivated following his achievement.

In conclusion, Wawrinka does not belong in the same category as players like Federer or Nadal? But if someone argued that the new French Open champion is as talented as the likes of Michael Chang, Goran Ivanesevic, Vitas Gerulaitis, and Pat Cash then it would seem to be a defendable position.

Novak Djokovic’s Wawrinka Stumble Won’t Slow Him Down

novak djokovic not letting wawrinka loss slow him down 2015

Novak Djokovic has started 2015 in fantastic fashion.  The first major tournament of the year, the Australian Open, saw the Serbian breeze through the first five rounds of the event without dropping a single set.  In the semi-finals, Stanislas Wawrinka took Djokovic to a deciding set but the world number one raised his game and took that set without conceding a game to his opponent.  In the final, against Andy Murray, Djokovic won in four sets and thus claimed his fifth Australian Open title.  This is a record for Australian Open victories and took Djokovic beyond Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, two greats of the game.

In truth, the Australian Open result was one which was expected.  That in itself, shows how formidable Djokovic is in today’s game.  A glance at any bookmaker before the start of an ATP Tour event or Grand Slam, will find Djokovic at the top of the list, installed as favourite, regardless of what the tournament is, where it’s being staged and what surface it will be played on.

Take the 2015 French Open as an example.  This is the one Grand Slam that Djokovic has yet to win and this would count against many players in their odds prior to the start of a tournament.  However, Djokovic was installed as favourite and rightly so.  In the build up to the 2015 French Open, Djokovic played in two clay court tournaments, the Monte Carlo Masters and the Italian Open.  He won both of them.  Prior to the 2015 French Open final, Djokovic was on an unbeaten run of 28 matches and by defeating the ‘King of Clay‘ Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, claimed that he was that pinnacle of his career.

However, the defeat to Stanislas Wawrinka in the final prevented Djokovic from achieving the career Grand Slam, which shows that the Serbian can be stopped.  That being said, it is only the French Open that appears to be out of reach for Djokovic and whether tiredness was an issue in the final is to be debated.  That does not take anything away from Wawrinka, who played superb tennis and mentally the defeat will really hurt Djokovic.  The question is, can he bounce back from it?

novak djokovic wont let stan wawrinka slow him down 2015 tennis

Current overall form, suggests that answer is a resounding yes.  Not only has Djokovic been playing like a well-oiled machine but his most serious opponents for tennis’ main titles are currently stuttering somewhat.  Roger Federer is always going to be a threat at any tennis tournament he enters but, the Swiss maestro is now in decline and this will continue, whereas Djokovic is at the peak of his powers.  The same can be said for Rafael Nadal, who has struggled with injury of late and seems to be lacking confidence on the court.  Andy Murray has performed well on clay this year but again came up short when it mattered most in the semi-final of the French Open, which means the Scot has now lost his last eight matches against Djokovic.

In fact, there is currently not a single player on the ATP Tour who has a good recent record against Djokovic, and the struggles of the men closest to him in the world rankings is only going to make things easier.  Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are great names but they no longer seem to have what it takes to defeat Djokovic and therefore the challenge for Djokovic is perhaps not as it once was.

That being said, Djokovic’s potentially great year cannot simply be put down to a lack of serious competition at the top of the men’s game.  Yes, Federer and Nadal are weaker than they have been in the past but Djokovic is moving in the other direction, getting better, stronger.  Therefore, how dominant Djokovic actually is this year, could come down to Djokovic himself.  Getting to the top is very tough but staying there, well that is tougher again.  The pressure is enormous and surely that has increased, having lost the French Open title and career Grand Slam for another year.

Many tennis commentators believe the semi-final of the French Open really showed where Djokovic is at right now.  Andy Murray played some fantastic tennis during that match and at times was probably playing at his peak.  However, before anyone had time to barely blink, Djokovic had taken the match away from him in the deciding set, sensational.

That being said, having lost the 2015 French Open final, both the career Grand Slam and the calendar year Grand Slam is once again out of reach.  The last person to come close to achieving the calendar year Grand Slam was Djokovic himself, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in 2011 but bowing out in the semi-final of the French Open.  Prior to that, Roger Federer also failed to complete the calendar year Grand Slam in 2006 and 2007, losing the French Open final twice.  Therefore, it’s been the French Open that has always prevented a player from winning all four Grand Slam events in the same year.

The big task for Djokovic now, will be to move on from the French Open as quickly as possible and the best way to do that is by playing and winning matches.  Despite the French Open final defeat, Djokovic is still the best player on the ATP Tour, not unstoppable but definitely the best.

Kevin Durant Fine To Sign With Washington Wizards

0

kevin durant signs with washington wizards 2015 nba

NBA superstar and Washington, D.C.-native Kevin Durant announced this past week that if he were to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder at the end of the 2015-2016 season, it would be to return home and sign with the Washington Wizards.

Durant didn’t exactly have the best season. In fact, as arguably one of the top three players in the league, Durant had possibly the quietest season a star could ever have. Really, if it weren’t for those Sonic commercials, the only time he would have even been mentioned on TV was in regards to another foot injury or the Lil B Based God curse that he brought upon himself by tweeting “I tried to listen to Lil B and my mind wouldn’t let me do it….can’t believe this guy is relevant.”

I guess after Durant’s woes this season and James Harden’s bad games in the Western Conference Finals players will start being a little nicer to Lil B.

Of course Durant would have been talked about a lot more if Russell Westbrook wasn’t having a career year with triple-doubles every other night. The team actually came within one win of the playoffs. Considering Durant was only able to play in 27 games, that’s definitely an impressive finish.

The real question here is, WILL Durant actually leave OKC after all the success he’s had with the organization?

Yeah, probably. Well, maybe.

Obviously injuries are a part of sports, but no one likes to go through them. I imagine Durant started to feel a bit disconnected from the team throughout the season simply because he wasn’t able to go out on the court and contribute on a nightly basis. So the season ends, the Thunder miss the playoffs; and seemingly out of nowhere they decide to fire head coach Scott Brooks—who, among others on the roster, was passionately backed and supported by Durant.

Sure, general manager Sam Presti shouldn’t be letting Durant or anyone else determine how he does his job or what transactions he makes; but you would think Presti would be a little quicker to ensure Durant is happy, especially with his contract expiring at the end of this coming season.

So Durant probably isn’t happy about Brooks getting canned.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what KD decides to do. Personally, I believe he’ll leave. I think that the firing of Brooks planted the seeds of doubt (in the loyalty of the organization) and then Russ will only make things worse. Let’s be honest, he was a hot topic this season. Now he has to go back to being the second best player on the Thunder. No way he’s going to be okay with that.

You’ll mesh better with John Wall anyways, Kevin.

Lebron James was just 11 for 35 on the night, meaning a lot of possessions that went through him offensively ended up as Golden State rebounds. But, fortunately for Warrior fans, Stephen Curry also shot poorly in game two as he hit just 5 of 23 from the field. James and Curry had 39 points and 19 points respectively with a major difference between the two being the former’s ability to get to the free throw line as James hit 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.

James turned in a triple-double to remember, Matthew Dellavedova made the go-ahead free throws in overtime, and the Cavaliers overcame a fourth-quarter collapse to outlast the Golden State Warriors 95-93 on Sunday night to even the NBA Finals at a game apiece.

James finished with 39 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists in 50 minutes, carrying Cleveland’s depleted roster to victory on the NBA’s toughest home floor. The Warriors had been 47-3 at ear-piercing Oracle Arena.

”I tried to give it all to my teammates. And they do a great job of giving it back to me. Total team effort,” said James, who shot 11 of 34 from the floor and seemed to wear down as the game dragged on. ”To be back in the same position we were in three days ago and to come back and even the series is big time.”

The game might also be remembered for its similarities to game one. The Cavaliers held a big lead in game two, just as they did in the opener, only to see it winnow away. In both games one and games two regulation concluded with a missed shot by James, one that could have given his side victory.

However unlike game one, the Cavaliers actually showed up to play in the overtime session on Sunday. The drama in game two peaked when Matthew Dellavedova, after getting fouled with about 10 seconds to play, approached the line for two free throw shots. The 24-year old Aussie, who played sparingly in game one, was arguably only in the game in the clutch due to the injury to Kyrie Irving earlier in the series.

Dellavedova made both of his free throws to give Cleveland the lead, one that they would hang onto following a Curry airball in the dying seconds (final score: 95-93).

The Cavaliers had drifted in the betting market following both the game one loss and the loss of Irving for the remainder of the season. However, despite the attrition of star players that they’ve seen during the 2015 playoffs, the Cavaliers showed that they would not just fold on their season. The sportsbooks do not know what to make of this Cavalier team as some, like Unibet, price the Cavs as favorites while others, like BetVictor and Paddy Power, make Golden State the favorites still.

Stephen Curry had a horrific shooting performance but converted the tying layup for the Warriors late in regulation. The MVP also put Golden State in front 93-92 on free throws with 29.5 seconds left in overtime.

Then, Draymond Green met James at the rim to block his left-handed layup, but the Cavs retained possession. After James Jones missed a 3-pointer, Dellavedova grabbed the rebound and was fouled.

Dellavedova made both free throws to put Cleveland up with 10.1 seconds to play. Curry air-balled a jumper contested by Dellavedova, James got the rebound and hit one of two free throws with 4.4 seconds left.

”He was huge for us,” James said about Dellavedova. ”We knew we could count on him because we’ve been in this situation before. He gave us everything that he had and more.”

After James’ made the free throw, Curry, without a timeout, raced up court and tried to pass ahead to Klay Thompson. But Iman Shumpert batted the ball away to seal the Cavs’ win.

That truly is a baffling situation as usually sports betting odds, despite variance, have the favorites and underdogs aligned across the board.

Game three goes on Tuesday night at 9pm ET from Ohio.

Stan Wawrinka Defeats Last of Holy Trinity Winning 2015 French Open

stan wawrinka knocks out holy trinity for french open title 2015

Stan Wawrinka has been on a role knocking out one after the other of the power tennis Holy Trinity consisting of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and now Novak Djokovic. Yes, some call them the Power 3 but these guys play on a whole other level, and the only person who been consistently bringing them down to earth is the Swiss Wawrinka who seems as surprised with winning the 2015 French Open title as Djokovic. He took down the worlds number one ranked tennis player in four sets, one in which he was down until he rallied back, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

This makes his second Grand Slam win, but more importantly stopped the seemingly unstoppable Serbian tennis star from taking home his first Roland Garros title. It truly seemed like nothing could stop Djokovic’s momentum as he’s knocked out everyone in his path, but Wawrinka has been doing exactly the same thing, but he doesn’t garner as much press so it’s not as noticeable to the average person. Until now.

The Swiss was warmly congratulated at the handshake by Djokovic before climbing into the stands to celebrate with his coach, Magnus Norman – the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2000 – and his family. He then returned to the court to embrace Djokovic once more.

Three-time Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten, who beat Norman in the 2000 final, presented La Coupe des Mousquetaires to Wawrinka. There was a special and prolonged ovation for three-time runner-up Djokovic, who was moved to tears by the reception he received on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Wawrinka was rewarded for playing lights-out tennis for much of the three-hour, 12-minute contest. He struck 59 winners, almost twice as many as Djokovic, and never let his head drop as the Serb relentlessly fended off break points. After rallying from 0/40 down in the eighth game of the fourth set – having already been a break down – Wawrinka red-lined a backhand winner to break Djokovic and served out the contest, saving break point before finishing with another lethal backhand.

Wawrinka will return to the Top 4 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday after joining Roger Federer (2009) as the only Swiss champions at the clay-court Grand Slam. The Lausanne native added to the Australian Open crown he won in January 2014 (d. Nadal), making him just the sixth active player to win multiple major titles.

The 30-year-old Wawrinka, who won the boys’ singles title in Paris in 2003 (d. Baker), is the first former junior champion to lift the men’s singles trophy since Mats Wilander in 1988.

Wawrinka had beaten 17-time major champion and good friend Federer in the quarter-finals before denying home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals. At 30 years and 71 days, he is the third oldest first-time Roland Garros champion in the Open Era.

World No. 1 Djokovic was bidding to become the eighth man in history to complete the career Grand Slam. It is the third time that the Belgrade native has finished runner-up in Paris, having fallen to Rafael Nadal in the 2012 and 2014 finals.

The Serb had stunned nine-time Roland Garros champion Nadal in straight sets in the quarter-finals before edging Andy Murray in a five-set semi-final that spanned two days.

Djokovic was looking to win his ninth Grand Slam championship, having opened the 2015 season by triumphing at the Australian Open (d. Murray). The right-hander suffered just his third defeat of the season and saw his 28-match winning streak come to an end; his last defeat had come against Federer in the Dubai final.

Having fallen to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round last year, Wawrinka is the first player to return the following year and lift the trophy at the same Grand Slam championship since Federer won at 2003 Wimbledon. One year earlier, the Swiss had fallen in his opener to Mario Ancic at the All England Club.

Wawrinka is also the first player to defeat the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds en route to the Roland Garros title since Sergi Bruguera in 1993. Bruguera defeated No. 1 Pete Sampras in the quarter-finals and No. 2 Jim Courier in the final.

Game of Thrones Hopelessness Equals Hardhome 508

game of thrones 508 hardhome 2015 images collage

This week’s Game of Thrones Hardhome episode could have easily been named “Hopeless,” due to what we witnessed from the White Walkers and their fearsome leader, the Night King. Dude has some mad skills. He is the Bear Bryant of Westeros. He can take his’n and beat your’n, or take your’n and beat his’n….literally. Not sure how you defeat an army with the ability to get up from death and steal your guys as well.

We see Jorah is no closer to forgiveness from Daenerys. He and Tyrion appear before her to state their case. Actually it’s just Tyrion who gets to talk at all. Girl holds a grudge now! Tyrion sees how she does not trust Jorah so he visually distances himself from the guy as he steps closer to Dany. He tells her that be believes Jorah would die for her and thinks he is in love with her as well. Tyrion ultimately advises the Mother of Dragons that she cannot have Ser Jorah by her side though. Jorah is removed from the city and he heads back to the fighting pits to try and get in front of Dany once again by winning the big tournament. We shall see if devolving into a stone man with greyscale makes him a more vicious fighter or gets him killed. I hope for the former. Jorah has been one of my favorite characters in his underdog role. He stuck with Dany when she had nothing, then just when she was gaining power, he gets exiled because of his past deeds.
game of thrones sance after ramsay rapes her 2015 got
We get to see Cersei rotting away in her cell making idle threats to her female jailer. The threats are not very impressive this week as the Queen Mother is dirty and very common looking on the floor of the jail. I am really starting to feel sorry for Cersei. That’s a joke. She deserves much worse and I hope she gets all that is coming her way.

Cersei is later visited by her mad scientist buddy Qyburn. He tells her of Tommen’s fear to even leave his room to eat and how her uncle Kevin will not visit her either. He advises her to confess so she will be released possibly, but her pride isn’t going to allow that. Qyburn tells Cersei on his way out that “the work continues,” so I assume he means the repair of Ser Gregor. Perhaps the “Mountain” will be unleashed on the High Sparrow and company at some point. That would be most entertaining.

Arya continues to move forward in her plans to be a real assassin. At this rate most of her enemies may be dead from old age or the White Walkers though. She needs to step it up a bit, but her first real target is an shady insurance guy who fails to pay off when a sailor meets his death on a voyage. Everyone hates insurance salesmen and the shady part is a given, so I hope his death is not so quick.

Sansa feels the need to ask Reek why he told Ramsay of her plans to call for help. It should be obvious that he is a sniveling shell of a man that is terrified to disobey his owner, Ramsay. During the exchange Reek confesses that he did not kill her two younger brothers. It was “only” two farm boys. That doesn’t make Reek into a better person, but it just gives Sansa a glimmer of hope…until the next awful thing that happens to her that is.

Roose Bolton is content to let Stannis’ army freeze, but Ramsay wants to take the offensive and says he only needs 20 men. This boy is foolish and wants to impress his daddy. I have no idea what kind of damage he can do with just 20 guys, unless he thinks he can get to Stannis himself.

There’s a great scene between Tyrion and Dany as they sip wine and discuss terrible family stories. Dany is not happy about Varys being the one who talked Tyrion into seeking her out. He was the spy master that kept tabs on her also. Tyrion says he suspects Varys may have had a hand in keeping the Targaryen alive as a child though. We hear the fantastic wheel speech that was previewed before the season. Daenerys intends to break the wheel that contains the spokes of all the powerful families. Again, this hints at a new system that isn’t just person after person scrambling to get on the Iron Throne. Tyrion suggests the Throne isn’t necessarily the main goal either, pointing out how many lives she has improved in the regions she has conquered already.

Another shot of Cersei in jail, sipping water off the nasty floor! Sympathy check….still none here.
game of thrones 508 hardhome images 2015 1920x1080The major scene of the night was akin to the Wildlings assault on The Wall, although it wasn’t as long obviously. Jon Snow and Tormund arrive at Hardhome where the Wildlings are camped. The initial meeting with one of the elders goes Ok, if you consider a deadly beating a good start to an peace treaty meeting. Tormund knows better how to handle the Wildlings since he is one of them though, so the beating lead to a more peaceful meeting with all the elders. Eventually the elders agree to join with Snow in a temporary unification to fight off these White Walkers that Snow tells them about. This is not a friendship. That is made crystal clear.
game of thrones 508 hardhome images 2015 3606x2400After the agreement they are ready to set sail for The Wall to pass through the tunnel. That’s when all hell broke loose. White Walkers poured over the mountain slamming themselves in to the Wildlings’ fortress. Full blown panic hit as the Free Folk scampered into any and all available boats. It was clearly time to get the hell out of Dodge. There were so many zombified soldiers that it was a useless fight, although entertaining to watch. We got to enjoy the giant, who survived The Wall battle, mashing the Walkers in thunderous fashion. The big guy knows how to kill.
game of thrones 508 hardhome images 2015 1920x1080-003

The fight between Jon Snow and one of the leaders of the White Walkers was cool. Snow got treated like a lil bastard and nearly had his chest caved in at one point. He finally managed some success when he got hold of a sword made of Valyrian Steel, which didn’t get disintegrated like normal weapons by these Walkers. Jon destroyed his opponent with the sword that is apparently as good as dragon glass. It’s a good thing too since the glass was left behind in the ruckus. Not that a little bag of dragon glass would have helped against the thousands of undead soldiers they were up against.

game of thrones 508 hardhome images 2015 1920x1080-001Eventually another round of Walkers stream off the mountain to attack. They are akin to fire ants with their shear numbers. Jon and company retreat to the last boat wisely. I guess the White Walkers can’t swim since they do not follow. The giant survived as he walked out into the sea as well, but he is going to need a bigger boat at some point.
game of thrones 508 hardhome images 2015 1920x1080-002Jon watches the shore from his boat and sees just what they are up against. You can see the dismay all over the Lord Commander’s face. How can you defeat such a foe? The Night King, leader of the Walkers and basically a blue eyed devil, raises his arms to raise the dead. A simple motion that revives not only his fallen soldiers, but the enemy’s dead as well. An opponent that increases his numbers with your dead soldiers is quite a quandary indeed. You can hardly kill his guys and he can “recruit” your people once they are slaughtered. In future battles with these creatures it would be pointless to kill them with anything other than fire, Valyrian Steel, or dragon glass. The best tactic would be to keep a sea between yourself and these ruthless White Walkers.
This episode was probably the best of the season. Next week’s preview looked like it may rival it. With only two episodes left this season, better prepare yourself for a long offseason. Damn these ten episodes go by fast every year!

Can we ever secure the cloud?

Cloud computing and big data are both taking the world by storm and are hot topics on all technology related conversations.

It is no great secret though that the biggest barrier to these technologies really taking off is security. Whilst everyone in the tech industry will argue that the cloud is in fact far more secure than traditional on site IT systems there is still a real fear – and a just fear – that technology in general is nowhere near as secure as it needs to be and this fear is really debilitating the progress of these new and somewhat experimental technologies.

The current security landscape

Regardless of the security that is in place for any particular cloud based service there is no denying the fact that many IT systems and cloud services are getting hacked in to one way or another.

There have been several high profile cases recently that confirm these security issues including the Sony Pictures Entertainment hack in 2014 and the Dropbox hack to name just a few.

As well as these high profile cases there are also dozens of hacking attempts accruing across all sectors of the market with the education sector being one of the most targeted but least policed.

It is important to note that as was the case in the Dropbox incident many of these breaches do not come as a result of the service provider’s infrastructure being compromised but are more often the result of individual user accounts being compromised or through third party providers who have API access to these systems and services. However, whilst this might abscond the providers from their legal culpability it is hardly an excuse from and ethical of technical point of view.

cloud security a problem for government 2015

Taking responsibility for data security

Before getting into any of the technicalities of data securities or any of thing things that need to change in order to improve security I think the most important step is understanding the importance of data security, the effect that we can all have on its effectiveness and ultimately realising that we all need to take responsibility for this security.

If companies like Dropbox provide API access to their systems then they must take some responsibility for all parties that have access via these means and equally as users we should all take responsibility for the security of these services because even if we don’t personally have any important information stored in Dropbox a breach of our account could indirectly provide a hacker with access to other more sensitive data.

How can security be improved?

We all need to take more responsibility for the security of our data but at the same time the technical measures need to be available to realise the security of our data. Whilst there are measures already in place I think that if these measures were coupled with a new understanding and sense of responsibility then they could be far more effective.

Two step authentication is a case in point and is a fantastic security measure that can go a long way to preventing user accounts from being compromised. Whilst many companies are offering two step authentication very few of those are making it mandatory and equally the end user is often reluctant to implement this security measure because they feel that it is not necessary for them – once again though we should be looking at the bigger picture here and appreciate that overall two step authentication would be working towards a greater good in terms of data security.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the technology it involves authenticating not only with a password but also using an external device to provide further authentication normally in the form of a random and regularly changing pass code. Google provide a two-step authentication service known as Google Authenticator which consists of a smartphone app that can be linked with a supported online service such as the payment processor Stripe, after which it will constantly generate random codes every minute or so and when you log in to a connected service account you have to enter the current code along with your password.

This type of service takes away the possibility of a password being compromised or brute forced and whilst not bullet proof is exactly the type of security measure that being compulsory would cut down a huge amount of hacking attempts.

Server, network and resource security

As well as the responsibility that users should have in terms of security service providers also have a great responsibility in terms of network and server security – this should include not only the perimeter defences that are in place for the servers that these systems run on but also the data that is stored on those servers as well as all forms of access – including third party connections made available by API access.

It is perhaps time for a reform of all of these components with security being at the forefront – encryption of all data at rest similar to the policies that are in place within the financial sector would be a good start as well as new protocols and security measures for API access – perhaps an enterprise version of two step authentication.

In addition service providers also have the responsibility of ensuring password security for all of their users which could be improved by implementing stronger password requirements as well as mandatory password expiry. This point can be highlighting when you look at password complexity indicators across different service providers and see how much these indicators can vary with the same password being deemed very weak by one provider and extremely strong by another. Perhaps we also need standards in place across the board that dictate the requirements of a password for it to be considered strong.

These are just my thoughts on the subject and I would love to hear the opinion of our readers as to other measures that could be put in place to temper the issue of data security. In my opinion I don’t think we will really see the full potential of technologies such as the cloud, big data or the internet of things until we can overcome these issues with security – only then will the consumer really begin to trust these new technologies.

Stop Punishing Josh Duggar & His Family

0

josh duggar touching young girl extras 2015

In recent weeks a 2006 report accounting a confession from Josh Duggar, the oldest son from TLC’s 19 Kids & Counting, about molestation of five young girls has surfaced. This has caused the Duggar family to go on the defensive as the allegations sharply contrast the wholesome Christian family values that they are known for espousing.

First, let’s review exactly what has surfaced regarding Josh Duggar’s controversial past.

Last month, Springdale City police chief Kathy O’Kelley released a 2006 police report containing accounts of five instances of child molestation by Josh Duggar. At the time of these incidents Josh was between 14 and 15 years old. The alleged victims were all young females, two of which were Josh’s sisters Jessa Seewald and Jill Dillard. According to reports, Josh first confessed to his father, Jim Bob, and was promptly sent to a Christian-based counseling program. Following Josh’s return, Jim Bob brought him to the local authorities where Josh remorsefully recounted his wrongful actions.

Although the Josh Duggar report should not be taken lightly I think the media frenzy has taken a drastic stance on an issue that is far in the past. First, it should be noted that Josh is now 27 years old with a wife and three kids. He has admitted to his wrongdoings, expressed great regret, and has shown that he has moved on to a healthier path in life (ie. he established a career, he is active in the community, etc).

That doesn’t mean that the issue should be ignored. From reading the reported aftermath, after Josh confessed to his family and authorities, it seems that Josh was mainly put through programs that focused on the religious aspects of righting his sins. In fact, the first counseling he received was reportedly from a Christian non-licensed counseling service [reported on www.salon.com]. One question this raises is if he’s received any treatment that focuses on his mental wellbeing and values as a human being, rather than what his religious views are. Also perhaps some limited action should be taken to ensure his new family have been and always will be in a safe environment.

But I think the media is forcing Josh into an indefinite punishment that takes away his opportunity to live a full, rejuvenated life. While I do not agree with most of Josh and his family’s conservative views, I do not believe this should cloud people’s judgment on how Josh and the victims should be treated.

The fact that Josh has expressed such strong Christian opinions regarding what he believes is the wrongfulness of same sex marriage has played against him in this situation. People who are offended by Duggar’s opinions are now using something against him from a time when he was only a teenager.  While molestation is certainly not your normal and forgivable youthful indiscretion it’s probably still something that should not stick with you forever, provided that the behavior is not repeated after a certain age.

The other side of the story, one that doesn’t have to do with Josh directly, is that of the victims. In a recent sit down with FOX’s Megyn Kelly the sisters who were victims of the molestation, Jessa and Jill, expressed their frustration with the media. They feel as though the media outlets are re-victimizing them and they feel more distraught by the coverage of the story now than they ever did from the 2002 events.

It should be noted that they were very young at the time and the family has admitted that the girls had very little awareness of the wrongfulness of Josh’s. I hope that the sisters will be more appropriately protected against the publicity of this event. As minors during the time of the molestation, they would normally be protected from any embarrassment that comes from such an event becoming public knowledge. Unfortunately as part of the 19 Kids & Counting cast, this privacy was never an option and, realistically, probably won’t be in the future.

But I still believe there should have been some form of privacy procedures put into place protecting what is to be published about the victims. These girls have new families now: Jill with a husband/child and Jessa with a husband/child-on-the-way.

letting the duggar family be alone 2015 tvWhat should be a time of joy and focus on family has turned into a time of distress and constant reiteration of events that only cause pain to the victims and families. Both sisters have expressed forgiveness, love and encouragement for Josh’s movement forward in a more positive path. The issue resurfacing in their lives can’t be helpful for them and it appears it is only helpful to those who want to cast Josh Duggar in a negative light.

There is no doubt the actions Josh took as an adolescent were wrong and merit rehabilitation if a problem still exists. But I do not believe in a punishment that will forever entail a dark cloud above him. With proper acknowledgement, compliance, growth from Josh, and some level of peace from the victims, I think this family should be able to move on to the lives they have worked to create all this time since the incidents originally took place.

This doesn’t mean that the Duggar’s disapproval of other people’s sex lives is correct. However the fact that he did something wrong when he was a non-adult teenager doesn’t really reflect that much on him or his views now as a man who is closer to 30 than 20.

Will the Internet ever give power back to the little guy?

For many years the corporate giants have ruled almost all areas of business and have really held the power when it comes to the consumer marketplace.

These large companies have been able to hold a joint monopoly in the provision of goods and services due to their huge buying powers and large advertising budgets.

These powers have seen the small business being pushed out of the marketplace, unable to compete, and this has resulted in the larger corporations having power over their competition and ultimately over the consumer as well.

The Internet initially promised to see an end to this with equality always being one of its core values but unfortunately with the arrival of Google and other search engines we started to see exactly the same struggle for power and once again the large corporations were coming out on top largely due to the fact that they were able to through huge amounts of money at online advertising in the form of both pay per click campaigns and search engine optimisation.

Up until recently this has made it almost impossible for the little guy to make it on the Internet – even with the best content or products in the world it has been an impossible task trying to get above these giants in the search engines and the likes of Google seem like the high streets of today where only the largest retailers can afford the floor space.

is internet putting power back in hands of little guy 2015 images

However, this is all starting to change as we are seeing the arrival of a new type of online marketplace that threatens to bypass the likes of Google and other search engines – services such as Ebay and Amazon which provide a new and unbiased platform where buyers and sellers can come together from around the world in order to broker goods and services.

This type of marketplace was always a natural progression of the Internet because by its very nature the Internet is ultimately an unbiased platform and does not stand for monopolies, price fixing or split economies. The Internet instead provides a single global marketplace where anyone can trade with anyone else and this strategy provides the ultimate competition which in turn ensures that products and services are traded fairly.

With this type of global marketplace if a product is being sold at an inflated value another provider will simply come along and sell that same product at a fair price – because there are no physical or geographical boundaries everyone can get involved in this marketplace and there are very few barriers to entry in terms of sourcing, supply, advertising or communications.

Even the little guy that used to sell handmade products at a market stall in some remote part of the world can now sell his products to the entire world with very few additional overheads and can comfortably compete with the biggest retailers out there.

Whilst the Internet has paved a bumpy road in terms of e-commerce despite the best efforts of the giant corporations the little man is once again coming out on top and ultimately will flourish on the Internet.
