UNDERCOVER BOSS Recap: Todd Pedersen Vivint CEO

UNDERCOVER BOSS Recap Todd Pedersen Vivint CEO

This week on Undercover Boss, Todd Pedersen, CEO of Vivint, went on a mission to observe the inner workings of his company. Based in Utah, Vivint is a company that offers security systems for homes.

For his first undercover mission as Eddie he went to Syracuse, Utah to work on an install job with his company. He met with Mark, the tech he would be working with for the day. Right away he introduced himself as Todd, but then scrambled to have Mark call him Eddie. Todd, as Eddie, then asked questions to determine whether or not Mark was actually onto him. Mark then admitted he knew Eddie was really Todd Peterson and he was told he was on Undercover Boss. Todd/Eddie felt tension over the fact that Mark knew his real identity. Mark said that when Eddie was climbing up the roof of the house they were working on, he was slipping a lot. Eddie then realized that his workers need the proper shoes to prevent them from falling off roofs they are working on. On a break from work Eddie and Mark talked about Mark’s broken engagement and about trying to get custody of his son.

On his second undercover mission he went to St. Paul, Minnesota to work with a monitoring center representative. Since he blew his cover on his first mission he was afraid it would happen again. He then met Sandy, his co-worker for the day. She talked him through the process of taking a call from a customer and he said he hoped he didn’t get a burglary call. He watched Sandy take a call and noticed static interference that made it hard to hear the customer on the phone. When she asked him to take the next call himself he said he was nervous. Eddie awkwardly stumbled his way through the call, forgetting what to do and getting the call disconnected. He said he was embarrassed he couldn’t handle a call from a customer correctly. Sandy then told him the monitoring center needed some fine tuning. She also told Eddie that her 911 operator daughter makes more money per hour than she does. Sandy then told Eddie her husband had died recently and her car was in bad shape. She also confessed she was in debt and needed to liquidate.

For his third undercover mission he went to work in one of the company’s warehouses. He met Alma and she talked him through filling out a work order for a customer. He said he was surprised that the work order involved filling out a piece of paper and he felt that since the company y is a technology company work orders shouldn’t have to be hand written. Alma told him she was a used to the pressure of the job when she realized that he wasn’t used to it. She explained that she needs additional help in the warehouse and Eddie agreed. Alma then said Eddie wasn’t a good candidate for this particular job. She gave him an evaluation of his work performance and told him he needed to move faster. Eddie then asked her how she came about taking her job with his company and she spoke of her struggles along the way. Alma told him her family was number one to her and her daughters motivated her.

For his fourth undercover mission he went to Illinois to work on an installation in a smart home. He stated how important it was that those doing this job made no mistakes in their work. Eddie then met the homeowner and began working with Will, the installation employee on the job. Eddie then said his specialty is the angles found in the rooms of any house. Will said Eddie was moving a little slow and needed to practice working with a drill. He then told Eddie that even though the company had a great product Eddie was exhausted from working excessively long hours and that his wife was unhappy with how much time his job took up. Will then revealed that his wife had cancer and he wasn’t able to be with her many times during treatment because of having to work. Will also said he wanted to save money so when his wife had a medical procedure he could take time off to be with her. He also said that he and his wife had to pay either for his car or her medications because they couldn’t afford both. Eddie expressed his desire to be able to take care of his employees and that he has failed to do that.

Upon completing his missions, Eddie, as Todd, met with each employee he had worked with. He first spoke to Mark and mentioned that Todd had blown his own cover but that he still had a great day working with Mark. He then gave mark a promotion to supervisor, which came with a pay raise. Todd also said salespeople would go on the roof with techs when they are working. Then he told Mark he was paying off his debts and sending him and his son on vacation.

Todd then met with Alma and told her she was incredibly confident in her job. He then told Alma they were getting a new computerized management system. Todd also paid off Alma’s school debts and gave her money to care for her daughters. She then hugged him and thanked him for what he was doing.

When Todd met with Sandy he said he had a good time working with her. He told her he was nervous doing her job and that he was paying for a monitoring center with new equipment. Todd told her he was giving her money to pay off bills and get out of debt.

Todd then told Will that he was professional and Todd would pay for reconstructive surgery for Will’s wife. He also gave him money to buy a car and provide for his wife.

Below Todd talks about how he came to be on Undercover Boss and what his experience was really like.

Q: How did you get on “Undercover Boss?”

A: The Undercover Boss team approached Vivint about participating in the show.

Q: What was your initial response to being on the show?

A: Initially, I wasn’t interested at all as I’m not into “reality” television. Plus, being in front of a camera 24/7 is not my idea of a good time.

Q: So what changed your mind?

A: I actually watched a few of the episodes with my wife, and I was touched by the experiences the bosses had with their employees. We had a discussion about how we used to know the names of every Vivint employee, and often the names of their spouses. But we’ve grown exponentially since I founded this company two decades ago. We now employ 7,000 people and I don’t have daily interaction with many of them. “Undercover Boss” presented an opportunity to not only get to know some of my employees better, but also to learn more about the day-to-day processes that keep the company going.

Q: What about the “reality” thing? Is “Undercover Boss” real?

A: I haven’t seen the episode yet, but while undercover I found it to be pretty real. My responses, experiences with the employees, their background stories, etc. – all of that is authentic. I didn’t know anything beforehand. I had no idea which employees I would work with or the jobs I would complete until the morning of the each job. Sometimes I would even get on the plane without knowing my destination.

Q: How did you or the production crew convince employees that they weren’t filming “Undercover Boss?”

A: I actually got to come up with my own alias: Eddie Sorensen, a video store owner from Bend, Oregon. I chose the name Eddie because that’s my grandfather’s name. As for the production crew, those guys went through a lot of effort to convince employees that it was actually a different competition reality show. They created a fake show, wore fake badges, and even had a fake television show host to introduce the show every morning. Sometimes, I even forgot I was on “Undercover Boss.”

Q: Does the show determine the employee rewards at the end of the show?

A: “Undercover Boss” is known for its end-of-the-show rewards, so it is certainly encouraged. As for the amount and type of reward, that was completely my decision, and Vivint covers 100% of this expense.

Q: What was the biggest surprise for you during your experience?

A: I actually didn’t know that I would have that wig glued to my head for an entire week. I thought I would maybe have a nice toupee that I could take off at the end of each day. It turns out that the makeup crew is pretty serious about their hairpieces.

Q: How did this experience change your own perception of being a CEO?

A: I’ve always tried to have a lot of interaction with my employees, but this was a unique opportunity to show up and not be treated like the CEO. My experience on “Undercover Boss” reminded me just how essential Vivint’s employees are to the success of this company. If I could get away with convincing the rest of our executive team to put on wigs and glasses, I would want them all to have the same experience.

2015 NBA Western Conference: Race for 8th Seed

0

2015 NBA Western Conference

The NBA Western Conference has always been more competitive, and the 2014-2015 season is no exception. With only 7 games separating the 8th seed Oklahoma City Thunder from the 3rd seed Houston Rockets, the entire West is still wide open. Every team in the West tried to make some big moves over the All-Star break to push themselves above the competition, but some teams seem to have hurt themselves more than helped—for example, the Phoenix Suns.

The race for the 8th playoff spot in the West has been fierce all season: the Oklahoma City Thunder have been reduced to the 8th spot due to reigning MVP Kevin Durant’s foot injury, while the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans have been fighting to stay in the hunt. Although it was recently announced that Durant would be missing another week or two of action, the Thunder have basically won the competition for the final spot in the postseason by their trades before the NBA Trade Deadline.

The Thunder made a couple of big moves before the deadlines, bringing in Enes Kanter and Steve Novak from the Utah Jazz and D.J. Augustin from the Detroit Pistons. By adding a real big man like Kanter to the roster, the Thunder should have no problem winning even in the absence of Durant.

The Suns were doing a good job of keeping up with the Thunder up to the All-Star break, but by losing Goran Dragic to the Miami Heat they lost any chance of going to the playoffs along with him.

The New Orleans Pelicans had also done a great job of staying around .500 thus far; but with Anthony Davis set to miss up to two more weeks, Ryan Anderson out for as much as a month, and Jrue Holiday being set back three more weeks in his recovery the Pels can kiss any chance of their first playoff berth since trading away Chris Paul goodbye.

With just under half of the season left, the Thunder, Suns, and Pelicans will all give their final push for that last playoff spot. It’ll be interesting to see where they end up come the end of the regular season.

BIG BANG THEORY Season 8 Ep 15 Recap: Howard’s Mom

BIG BANG THEORY Season 8 Ep 15 Recap Howards Mom

This week on a very somber episode of The Big Bang Theory, tragedy strikes amid the opening of Stuart’s new comic book store. Thursday night’s episode of “The Big Bang Theory” was an emotional one for viewers. The CBS comedy addressed the November death of actress Carol Ann Susi, who died at 62 after a battle with cancer. In episode 15, her beloved character, Mrs. Wolowitz, passed away.

The opening scene showed Sheldon and his girlfriend Amy at work when a co-worker comes in and thanked Amy for helping him with a paper he wrote and published online. The couple then discussed why Amy would help Sheldon’s co-worker but not help him and Amy said Sheldon never thinks she can help him with his work.

In the next scene Howard was on the phone with his mother, who was on vacation in Florida. His mother asked him to check on her house because Stuart lives there and she wanted to make sure he was ok.

Then Sheldon and Penny discussed Amy helping Sheldon’s co-worker and how annoyed Sheldon was as a result. The co-worker she helped is Sheldon’s enemy at work, who is performing the same type of work and research Sheldon previously did. Penny told Sheldon to let go of his anger towards Amy and just talk to her about the problem.

As Stuart set up his comic book shop, Raj and Leonard stopped by to help. Then Howard came in and saw that Stuart was using furniture from Howard’s mother’s house in his new store. Howard then accused Stuart of mooching from his mother.

Penny and Sheldon talked more about how Sheldon should let go of his anger towards Amy and Penny told him how to let go. She told him to visualize his problems as an object and put the object down and walk away from it. Penny then thought back on Amy questioning her intelligence without her knowing it, because Sheldon told Penny that’s what Amy had been doing to her for a while now. Sheldon then told Penny to let go of the anger she felt over realizing Amy periodically tries to test Penny’s intelligence.

Penny then confronted Sheldon about being tested by Amy. Sheldon said Amy had been conducting an experiment where monkeys could figure out puzzles and Amy wanted to see if Penny could figure out the same puzzles the monkeys could.

Bernadette and Howard talked about how upset Howard was that Stuart was using his mom’s furniture in the new comic book shop. Howard told Bernadette he married her so she would support him in whatever he wanted.

Leonard and Raj went to pick up some food for everyone at the store. Raj spots “Firefly’s” Nathan Fillion and tries to figure out with Leonard how to approach him as he’s delicately taking cherry tomatoes off of his salad.

Penny confronted Amy on testing her intelligence as compared to the monkeys Amy has been studying. Amy was trying to get into Sheldon’s apartment, but kept arguing with Penny anyway. Penny said she wanted her dignity back.

Raj and Leonard approach Fillion who at first pretends he’s someone else, but admits he’s himself and offers to take a picture with the two. Then Raj asked him to say a famous line from “Firefly.” Naturally Raj is doubting it’s Fillion, but they still take a picture with him anyway.

Leonard and Penny talked about how Sheldon and Amy were testing Penny and that they had tested Leonard the same way. The tow then confronted Sheldon and Amy about it.

Howard expressed his anger to Bernadette about Stuart using his mom’s furniture. He then got a phone call that changed his entire life. After he got off the phone he told his friends that his aunt just called to tell him his mother had died in her sleep.  Bernadette then comforted Howard and Sheldon told Howard that when Sheldon’s father died Sheldon didn’t have any friends but Howard does.

The gang discusses the death of Howard’s mother and Stuart said if she hadn’t taken him in he would have been homeless. Raj then told the gang that Howard was his first friend when he moved to America and Howard’s mother was there for him. Penny and Amy also shared their memories of her. Sheldon said he didn’t care for her yelling but he was sad she would never yell again. Then the gang made a toast to Howard’s mom.

Rio Tennis Open Semi Finals 2015: Ferrer & Fognini Head To FInals

Rio Tennis Open Semi Finals 2015 Ferrer Fognini Head To FInals

The final for ATP Rio 2015 (Rio Open) is set following semifinal results on Saturday. Rafael Nadal, Fabio Fognini, and David Ferrer were all in action earlier with two of those players advancing to Sunday’s final.

The results from Saturday are below:

David Ferrer d. Andreas Haider-Maurer 7-5, 6-1.

Fabio Fognini d. Rafael Nadal 1-6, 6-2, 7-5

David Ferrer, following what was his third victory over Haider-Maurer, attributed his success in Rio to both his forehand and aggression.

“It is my first final here in Rio and tomorrow I hope to win the title,” said the World No. 9. “The first set was very close and we didn’t serve very well. In the second set I played better with my forehand and the key was I played more aggressive.”

While Ferrer’s victory was not surprising, most would not have picked the Spaniard to win the title – not as long as Nadal remained in the draw. However Italy’s Fognini had other plans as he extended Nadal to a close third set before claiming the upset win in the clay court event.

“I’m really happy about (the match against Nadal),” said Fognini. “I beat the best player on this surface.”

Fognini, implying that he did not like his play in the first set, further commented: “Rafa is always difficult. From the second set I played really well, and I tried to change a little bit to be more positive on court.”

Fognini had entered the Rio semifinal 0-4 against Nadal and his delight at unexpectingly making the championship match is understandable. He refered to himself as “super happy” with the victory but acknowledged that the tournament is not over: “tomorrow,” Fognini claimed, “I will have to battle David, who has always beaten me.”

While Nadal entered the semifinal with an impressive 4-0 record against Fognini, Ferrer enters the final with an even more impressive tally against the Italian. Ferrer, in seven matches, has not known defeat when matched up against Fognini. That winning streak includes clay court victories at Buenos Aires 2014, Acapulco 2013, Buenoes Aires 2013, and Bastad 2010.

Ferrer, having been ranked as such a high player for so long, has more than just a handful of titles. In fact the Spaniard will be looking for his twenty-third career title on Sunday and his second already in 2015. Fognini, in contrast, has just three titles to his credit so far in his career. While all of his titles came on the clay court surface, he has also lost four finals on that surface.

“I will obviously be happy if I win,” Fognini stated, commenting on the final against Ferrer. “If I lose, I will also leave with the good memories from this week in Rio.”

Fognini has not made the Top Ten to date. In making the Rio final, the current World No. 28 has already taken a small step toward reaching that height: even if he loses on Sunday he will crack the Top 25 once again. However if Fognini can find a way to get through Ferrer then he might end up in the Top 20 on Monday with plenty of room for growth in the clay court events to be played later this season.

The championship match from Rio, a 500-series event, is to be played not before 6pm on Sunday, following the women’s final between Sara Errani and Anna Schmiedlova. Below is a little blast from the past where Rafael Nadal accidentally knocked Fabio Fognini’s towel off him in the locker room so there was a little belated revenge in today’s match.

Rio Tennis Open Quarter Finals 2015 Nadal Moves On

The biggest tournament this week is the ATP Rio 2015 draw, a tournament that is part of the 500 series on tour. The tournament’s quarterfinals are now complete and three of the four top seeds advanced to the tournament’s semifinals.

rafael nadal sweat dripping after defeating pablo cuevas rio tennis open 2015

All the results from Friday are below and interestingly enough, each final went three sets:

(1) Rafael Nadal d. (6) Pablo Cuevas 4-6, 7-5, 6-0

(4) Fabio Fognini d. Federico Delbonis 6-4, 6-7, 7-6

Andreas Haider-Maurer d. Joao Souza 7-6, 1-6, 6-4

(2) David Ferrer d. Juan Monaco 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Ferrer, who faced a test in veteran Juan Monaco on Friday, now has what should be a routine match to make the championship. Haider-Maurer, a 27-year old Austrian, is somewhat of an obscure player on tour and, to date, he has only made one singles final in his career (Vienna 2010). Haider-Maurer is alive in a quarter of the draw where Tommy Robredo was the top seed.

Ferrer, following his win in the quarterfinal round, had the following comments regarding his match and the next one coming up:

“(Monaco) played very aggressive… I tried to be focused on every point and I took my chances,” said the Spaniard. “I will try my best to be in the final.”

andreas haider maurer beats joao souza rio open 2015

Haider-Maurer, in defeating Souza, eliminated the only Brazilian left in the Rio draw. The Austrian referenced the difficulty he persevered through in playing the crowd favorite:

“The crowd was tough, but I had a good feeling on the center court,” said Haider-Maurer. “It was a pleasure to play in front of this crowd. It was a tough match, up and down, but I’m very happy that I won.”

Haider-Maurer also reflected on his past matches against Ferrer ahead of Saturday’s semifinals:

“I can enjoy the match against him,” the Austrian said. “I played him two times already and in both, I had no chance against him. But I want to go on the court and enjoy this match. I think I have a chance if I play my game.”

pablo cuevas serving to rafael nadal rio open 2015

Rafael Nadal’s victory over Cuevas featured two hard fought sets and then a very lopsided final set. But Cuevas, it should be pointed out, did win a clay court event just last week. He therefore entered the quarterfinal round having played a ton of recent tennis. Perhaps he may have played a more competitive final set against Nadal if the Uruguayan had entered this week’s event better rested.

rafael nadal hitting tennis ball back to pablo cuevas rio open

The semifinals now set up with Nadal vs. Fognini in the top half of the draw. In the bottom half, Haider-Maurer will face Ferrer. Nadal, currently ranked third in the world, is a perfect 4-0 against Fognini. Ferrer, perhaps the player in the draw with the best chance of stopping the World No. 3, does have six victories over Nadal. However the current World No. 9 has also suffered twenty-two defeats to the more talented Spaniard over the years. By all measures, the title in Rio appears to be Nadal’s to lose.

ATP Rio, which will see its final played on Sunday, offers 500 ranking points to the tournament champion, making it a moderately important tournament on tour.

Jacksonville Jaguars Season Recap & 2015 NFL Draft Needs

Jacksonville Jaguars Season Recap 2015 NFL Draft Needs

Another year, another disappointing season from the Jacksonville Jaguars. For a team that consistently picks top five in the NFL Draft, the Jaguars never seem to improve anything. The Jags finished 2014 with a 3-13 record, missing the playoffs for the seventh year in a row. Some people seem to believe that combination of general manager Dave Caldwell, head coach Gus Bradley, and quarterback Blake Bortles (the 3rd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft) is leading the franchise in the right direction; but at 3-13 it is hard to make that argument. In fact, the Jaguars didn’t win a single game on the road this season—the second time that has happened ion franchise history. At least they were only second to last in the AFC South thanks to the Tennessee Titans.

jacksonville jaguars celebrate new york giants win 2015 images

The only glimmer of hope in the Jaguars 2014 season came in Week 13 against the New York Giants. Down 21-0 in the first half, the Jaguars pulled off the biggest comeback in their young franchise’s history, pulling up a 25-24 victory. The Jags had two defensive touchdowns on their way to outscoring the Giants 25-3 in the second half of the game.

The Jaguars are undoubtedly one of the worst teams in the NFL talent-wise, and one of the worst franchises overall. They have a lot of issues that need to be addressed this offseason if they ever want to at least finish a season at .500 anytime in the near future. The Jags have the 3rd overall selection once again in this year’s draft, so with a little luck and a few good picks maybe the Jaguars can do something soon. Here are the Jacksonville Jaguars biggest needs heading into the 2015 NFL Draft:

toby gerhart jaguars running back 2015 images

Running Back: The Jaguars signed ex-Minnesota Vikings backup Toby Gerhart heading into the 2014 season; however, he did not amount to anything. Gerhart was injured half the season, and when he did play he did very little. The Jags moved Denard Robinson to running back this past season, and that certainly shows some promise. In reality, Robinson and Gerhart could prove to be a solid one-two punch coming out of the back field for the Jaguars, but bringing in some young blood to compete for a spot on the roster never hurts. An early selection here on a running back couldn’t hurt.

josh evans jacksonville jaguars nfl 2015 images

Secondary Players: There’s a reason the Jags aren’t exactly known for their secondary. The Jaguars are in desperate need of help in their secondary, especially at the free safety position. Strong safety Josh Evans has started 24 games in his two years pro, and he seems to be a solid contributor for the secondary. Unfortunately, he’s the only one really contributing. The Jags really need a young playmaker that can step in and start playing immediately. Look for the Jaguars to address the issue in the draft with an early to mid-round selection.

senderrick marks jaguars defense 2015 imagessenderrick marks jaguars defense 2015 images

Pass Rushing: One of the few parts of the team that the Jaguars have actually done a good job of building up over the years is the defensive line. Sen’Derrick Marks and Roy Miller have both turned out to be great additions to the team, and the Jags have penned them both to long term deals. The only foreseeable problem with the Jaguars defensive line is its age. The average age for the defensive line starters is a little over 29 years. This is not a problem for the next few seasons, but the Jags are in a rebuilding stage not a championship window. The Jaguars need to address this issue by drafting a young pass rusher that they can build their defense around moving forward. Look for the Jaguars to address this need as early as the 3rd overall pick.

BRING IT! Season 3 Recap: Same Team Different Name & Creeper Coach

Go Hard or Go Home. That was pretty much the theme this week on Bring it! It was also the name of the competition the Dancing Dolls did in New Orleans. Their rival this week is the Infamous Dancerettes (ID) and the stakes are higher than ever before.

coach john bring it infamous dancerettes queen 2015 images

The coach for the team, John, has apparently been snooping around at the Dancing Dolls competitions that they have been doing throughout the south (like a stalker).  He has created a new team in order to beat them and trains them based on what DD does. “I’m not accepting anything less than first place.”

The Dancing Dolls are under a lot of pressure, even more so, because they only have a couple of days to get ready. This week to, a good portion of the story focuses on Selena and her girls Sanjay and her twin sisters Star and Sky. They feel a certain amount of weight too because they have some “big shoes to fill.”

bring it selena talking to twins for recap 2015

Ms. D tells the girls that they have to get it together because the beef between her and John is that real. This week too, Sanjay’s dad, Jay, shows up, which is refreshing because he is a very active father. He is there to support his girls and they are his number one priority. He definitely believes in his daughters and puts into them positive reinforcement. I like him.

girls watch miss d yell at zatia bring it 2015

Diana knows that they have an uphill battle and she is willing to do what needs to be done to win, including cussing at the girls and cutting them. With this, Selena is going to be there for her twins “1000 percent” because she wants them to be like their sister. Her girls make the cut and Selena goes on a wallowing parade in front of the other mothers who look at her like “shut the hell up.”

bring it miss d stand battle images 2015

Let me say here that it is interesting to see how John pumps up his girls to beat DD. He constantly talks about them and every time he addresses his team, he talks about DD and Diana.  I mean damn John, there are other teams competing that you have to worry about. Remember that.

bring it dancing dolls practise 2015

The day of competition, Selena goes to the back to talk to her twins and while she is telling them they better get it, Diana pulls her by her jacket away from the girls. She says that she is putting unneeded pressure on them and if she doesn’t back down, all three of her girls will be off the team. Ugh, why does she always have to go there? She’s only doing it to spite Selena.

It is time for pompom competition and John is so cocky saying “My girls are doing a phenomenal job, it’s over, we don’t have to do anything else.” ID does their routine and even Diana says that they do a good job but it is not good for pom competition.

infamous dancerettes slow stand for bring it 2015 images

Then DD performs and they look better in their routine but something happens, one of the girls loses her pompom and of course Diana is pissed.  Here too, John show just how much of a hater he really. I mean like really, he is catty and hating like he’s a female. It’s actually quit irritating and unbecoming. He’s not impressed with what he sees from thee Dancing Dolls. He even directs ID that “when they win” gloat in their faces because they took their trophy.

It then comes time for the stand battle. Diana and John come face to face right before they go on exchange fake pleasantries. She confronts him about coming to see them at compeiitons and he says “Oh yea.” I guess the only thing I give him credit for is doing his homework. I mean this dude has driven from Memphis to these other competitions to see the Dancing Dolls and even watched their videos. He admits in his confessionals to taking moves from DD routines to show the judges that his team can do it better.

infamous dancerettes watching dancing dolls bring it 2015 recap

His team finishes and he stands there looking at the DD like “really.” So the Dancing Dolls do their signature up down move that ID did and Diana goes over to him and wraps her arm around him like, “Look at this, this is how it’s done.” I just don’t get why everything he did was geared toward either copying DD or insulting them. Like be more original dude.  I think this shows that he is just doing what he feels will win, even if that means copying the team you are battling. That’s whack!

So the time comes for the awards ceremony. In the pompom competition, ID came in third place and DD came in first place. And of course the Dancing Dolls won first place. “Pick ya face up.”

bring it dancing dolls beat infamous dancerettes

John eats his words and says that they are coming back. They did their best. Um okay John. I mean come on, do you really think the judges don’t know DD’S moves too. Do better boo, boo.

I’m not going to lie, this week I was on edge and I have never wanted the Dancing Dolls to win as much as I did against ID.

project maelstrom bittorrents answer for website protection 2015

The internet can take on a whole new shape when Bittorrent’s Project Maelstrom becomes reality. Websites won’t be hosted in one or several mirrors, instead, they’ll be hosted by thousands of computers. Websites will be indestructible, no longer prone to denial-of-service attacks, financial problems or server breakdown. Like the Avenger’s enemy Ultron, websites become as indestructible or perpetual as long as bits of it survive somewhere in the internet. That is the aim of Bittorrent’s Project Maelstrom, to speed up website access and make them immortal. Bittorent’s aims also include keeping the internet open, free and neutral, along the lines of ‘letting the people own the internet.’

Everyone should be familiar by now of the concept of file-sharing via torrents. Files, especially large ones are shared in bits and pieces making them faster to download. These bits and pieces are shared and stored on the computers of everyone downloading or has already downloaded them and these pieces get transmitted at the same time. As long as someone seeds, the file will be available. The more seeds a file has, the faster it gets downloaded. So what if websites were treated the same way?

project maelstrom the next version of internet people 2015

If websites were treated the same way, they will be able to perform faster being hosted on multiple computers, not just on one or two servers. The more popular a website, the faster it gets. Websites virtually become crowd-funded. Websites could become immune to distributed denial-of-service attacks because there’s not one host to attack. Websites won’t go down because of sudden request surges, in fact they’ll perform faster with more and more access. Bandwidth cap hosting could also become obsolete or websites won’t be locked because a certain amount of bandwidth assigned to it has been reached. Websites won’t be taken down if the owner runs out of funding or if their servers crash.

The downside for websites that enter this type of hosting is that new and unpopular websites will load very slowly if not hosted on an already powerful computer. In this system, the creator becomes the first seed and must ensure his website gets off the ground as quickly as possible. Owners will have to resort to advertising and social media to get off the ground which is basically the same as the old fashioned way. The more people access the site at the same time, the more seeds there will be. One good thing is that website owners can do away with their hosting subscriptions when their website gets off the ground.

Another downside is that illegal websites become hard to take down so long as there are people who support them, no matter where they are. Sites considered illegal such as The Pirate Bay will remain open and won’t even require any servers for authorities to raid. On the other side, sites advocating free speech, the spread of ideologies considered illegal in countries that host them will remain open even after their servers are raided which is in keeping with Bittorrent’s aim of maintaining internet freedom.

As previously mentioned, when a website becomes popular, it gains plenty of seeds, takes on a life of its own and will no longer require its dedicated server. This enables website owners to cut costs of maintaining or even upgrading their servers. Popular content-providing websites such as Hulu or Netflix or even Xbox and PlayStation Network can benefit through Project Maelstrom. These websites can cut costs big time by streaming themselves the old fashioned way only through computers that use traditional access methods and letting the internet do the rest for Maelstrom users. They would no longer need to expand on their hardware as much as they should in traditional internet. Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg for instance will no longer need to ask for donations. DDOS which continue to plague or threaten them will be a thing of the past or rather the DDOS effect would be put in reverse speeding up websites rather than shutting them down.

To put it simply, Project Maelstrom will be done via web browser (similar to Google Chrome) and later specialized apps or clients. Like cookies, parts of websites will be stored on the users’ computer and seeded. The more people access a particular website, at the same time, the faster it gets.

Technically, it’s a good idea born out of good intentions such as the quest for good performance and freedom. Low costs, free speech and all that. Anyone will be able to host a website without monthly hosting and server costs. Positive advocacy, educational sites and even charity institutions can continue to operate with minimal funding.

However, in the comics, Ultron and even Skynet of the Terminator franchise, were made by their creators with good intentions only to turn on them. They became practically immortal as long as they have copies of themselves stashed safely somewhere. Criminals could take advantage of this and create websites that will be impossible to take down. Everything considered illegal on the internet such as piracy sites, hate groups and child porn, could become perpetually present long after their creators are prosecuted. There’s always two sides of the coin but hopefully, Project Maelstrom could turn into a trick coin where it’s always heads up.

French Battle For Gail Monfils & Gilles Simon at Open 13 Finals

Now the Open 13 ATP Marseille finals will be a battle of the French as Gael Monfils is pitted against Gilles Simon. While Monfils moved past fourth-seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-2 relatively comfortably, Simon was made to work harder by Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky before progressing 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Local favorite Gael Monfils maintained his perfect record against fourth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut to reach the final of the Open 13 where he will meet fellow Frenchman Gilles Simon.

The seventh-seeded Monfils, who also beat the Spaniard in the second round last week in Rotterdam, put Bautista Agut under pressure with excellent return games, and converted four of his five break points to produce an easy 6-4, 6-2 win on Saturday.

Simon took a slower start against Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine and rallied to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory after hitting nine aces.

It will be the first all-French final in the coastal city since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Michael Llodra six years ago.

Monfils, who also had nine aces to extend his record against Bautista Agut to 3-0, will be chasing his first title since winning in Montpellier last year. He has a poor 5-16 record in ATP tournament finals but has won three of his five titles in France.

“My coach gave me good tactics and I played differently compared to last week,” Monfils said. “Today I kept it simple and it helped me playing a big match.”

Monfils, who has decided against playing for France against Germany in the first round of the Davis Cup next month on the advice of his coach Jan de Witt to reduce his schedule, has yet to lose a set.

“It’s been a while since I’ve played good tennis here,” said Monfils, who never progressed beyond the quarterfinals in Marseille in six previous appearances. “Hopefully I’ll be able to win another title in France.”

The 17th-ranked Simon raised his game following the loss of the opening set and made a decisive break at love in the eighth game of the second set. He then raced to a 5-2 lead in the decider with a superb crosscourt forehand pass before closing out the match.

Simon, the 2007 champion, is also advised by de Witt. He will play the final in Marseille for the second time and bid for a 12th title. He leads Monfils 4-1 in their head to heads.

ATP Marseille 2015 (Open 13), a 250-series event on the ATP World Tour, featured two semifinal matches on Saturday. The results of the matches, posted below, have produced an all French final upcoming this Sunday.

Here’s the Saturday results from the semifinals for men’s singles:

[7] Gael Monfils (FRA) d. [4] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) 64 62

[5] Gilles Simon (FRA) d. Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR) 36 63 62

Monfils, a player who has spent a lot of time in the Top Ten on tour, enters the final in Marseille with a history of failure at the last hurdle of so many previous ATP events. The athletic Frenchman, though very experienced going deep into ATP draws, is not strong at closing out tournaments. Heading into the final at ATP Marseille on Sunday, Monfils is just 5-16 in championship matches.

Here’s a look at the titles that he has claimed in his handful of championship final victories:

2014: Montpellier (Indoor/Hard)

2011: Stockholm (Indoor/Hard)

2010: Montpellier (Indoor/Hard)

2009: Metz (Indoor/Hard)

2005: Sopot  (Outdoor/Clay)

Despite Monfils’ 23.8% winning percentage in championship matches, it is more than noteworthy that 80% of his titles have been won on the hard court surface in indoor events. ATP Marseille, an indoor/hard court event, fits that bill exactly and the five-time titlist on tour should feel optimistic about his chances on Sunday because of that.

However Simon, currently ranked 17th in the world, is much more adept at closing out tournaments. Heading into the Sunday final the veteran is an impressive 11-5 in singles finals on the ATP Tour. His wins in championship matches include victories in indoor events from ATP Metz (2013/2010) and ATP Marseille.

Here’s a complete look at all of Simon’s titles to date:

2013: Metz (Indoor/Hard)

2012: Bucharest (Outdoor/Clay)

2011: Hamburg (Outdoor/Clay), Sydney (Outdoor/Hard)

2010: Metz (Indoor/Hard)

2009: Bangkok (Indoor/Hard)

2008: Bucharest (Outdoor/Clay), Indianapolis (Outdoor/Hard), Casablanca (Outdoor/Clay)

2007: Bucharest (Outdoor/Clay), Marseille (Indoor/Hard)

2005: Lyon (Indoor/Carpet), Metz (Indoor/Hard)

Heading into the championship match, it is Simon that holds the clear edge on head-to-heads. He has defeated Monfils in four of their five meetings, including two wins in Grand Slam matches. However those that are looking to back Monfils will note that his sole victory over Simon came in an indoor hardcourt tournament, ATP Montpellier 2012.

The Sunday final from Marseille is a match that will draw a lot of attention in France however neither player should be affected by nerves. Both Monfils and Simon are veterans on tour and both players are experienced in big matches.

The Open 13 final should be a competitive one, especially in consideration of how their most recent match went. French tennis fans will surely remember the 2013 Aussie, where Monfils and Simon played to a 8-6 fifth set in a match that nearly took five hours to complete.

The singles championship in Marseille is scheduled for Sunday following the doubles championship. The starting time of the match is not before 3pm.

Favorite: Simon, based on head-to-heads and previous results in finals.

ATP Marseilles Quarter Open 13 Finals Review

stan wawrinka loses atp marseille to sergiy stakhovsky tennis 2015

The quarterfinal matches from ATP Marseille are complete and Friday’s results include one surprise upset. Stan Wawrinka, a champion last week in Rotterdam, entered the final eight as the top seed remaining in the draw. However the Swiss No. 2 fell to Sergiy Stakhovsky in the round of eight, thereby ending his bid for back-to-back titles in back-to-back weeks.

All of the quarterfinal results from Marseille are below:

Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR) d [2] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) 64 36 64

[4] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) d Dominic Thiem (AUT) 76(7) 63

[5] Gilles Simon (FRA) d Jeremy Chardy (FRA) 75 76(6)

[7] [WC] Gael Monfils (FRA) d Simone Bolelli (ITA) 64 64

Following the upset, Stakhovksy had the following comments which suggested that his coach, Fabrice Santoro was a part of the win:

“Fabrice gave me a game plan but it was not easy, as Stan usually puts a lot of pressure,” the Ukrainian said.

Wawrinka managed to claim a set but attributed the loss in part to poor footspeed:

“I was very slow,” said the champion from Rotterdam last week. “I was not very active, especially in the first set, and he played really well. I tried my best to make it change, but it didn’t happen.”

gilles simon and gael monfils to semifinals atp marseille tennis 2015

The two French players still remaining in the draw are Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils. They are on opposite sides of the draw so there is a chance for an all-French final in Marseille.

The semifinals will see Stakhovsky duel Simon while Monfils will face Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain. The fourth seeded Spaniard is now the highest seed remaining in the tournament as he looks for what would be his first title on the hard court surface.

With the top three seeds in the tournament all eliminated (ie. Milos Raonic, Wawrinka, and Ernests Gulbis) the title at the Open 13 really is up for grabs. While Bautista Agut is the highest seed remaining in the draw, both Monfils and Simon are proven hard court players.

Monfils, a quarterfinalist at the 2014 US Open, has four hard court titles to his credit. Furthermore the athletic and spontaneous showman has made the final of two Paris Masters events and his best Grand Slam showing to date is from Roland Garros. Those results prove that the Frenchman plays his best tennis in his home country, perhaps suggesting that he will plow through to a title in Marseille.

But Simon can by no means be discounted in the draw either as he has a handful of hard court titles in his career. Perhaps the only player that would be considered a surprise champion is Stakhovsky. Despite the upset of what had to be a tired Wawrinka following his title run last week, the Ukrainian, although he has big wins in his career, is not known for consistently posting wins against the best players on tour. He will need to do that to claim the Marseille title and, accordingly, of the quartet of semifinalists, Stakhovsky is the clear underdog in the draw.

The Order of Play for the two semifinal matches is below for Saturday:

Not Before 2:30 pm

[7] [WC] Gael Monfils (FRA) vs [4] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP)

[5] Gilles Simon (FRA) vs Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR)

Arsenal Facing Manchester United at Old Trafford in 6th Round FA Cup

arsenal vs liverpool jumping soccer action 2015 images

No replays in the fifth round of the FA Cup and we’re all set for the next round. The draws for the quarter final were determined a little before the tie between Manchester United and Preston North End. As we are reaching the later stages of the tournament, it is getting more and more interesting. On March 9th, we’ll witness two of the most successful teams in the history of the competition go head to head. Yes, Manchester United will host the Gunners at Old Trafford for the sixth round of matches.

The North Londoners and the Manchester giants have won the FA Cup eleven times and both these sides are capable of winning it for the twelfth time. United’s last win in the Cup came in 2004 under Sir Alex Ferguson. Since then they have won almost every possible trophy in their way and it certainly would be the right time to set this record straight. It will also ease the pressure on Louis van Gaal, who is trying to implement his philosophy at the club which is clearly in transition state. Moreover, no player in the current line-up of Manchester United has won this trophy with the 20-time English champions.

On the other hand, Arsenal are the holders of the trophy and they have a very good chance of retaining it this season. Wenger’s men defeated Hull City in last year’s final to end the trophy drought. If they fail to make it in the top four and don’t win a silverware, it could spell the end of Frenchman’s career at the Emirates.

arsenal facing manchester united 2015

In all the clashes between United and Arsenal at Old Trafford since United’s FA Cup win in 2004, Arsenal has won only once. It is quite surprising as Emirates based team is among the top sides in English division and numbers, 12 losses out of 14 matches and one draw, don’t suit their image.

The history suggests that United will cruise past their opponents, but the recent form says Arsenal might go through. The Londoners have picked form off late after a slow start to the season and they are only two points Manchester United on the Premier League table. Man United are getting satisfactory results, but their game play is being touted as monotonous and unattractive. But, all these criticisms don’t matter much to the Dutch manager, Van Gaal and his aim would be a finish in top four and the win at Wembley.

United and Gunners aren’t the only giants remaining in the tournament. Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool are also in hunt for their eighth FA Cup trophy. This trophy is eluding them from 2006, when they won it under Rafa Benitez. It could be the last piece of silverware Steven Gerrard wins with his beloved club and what a great sending off gift it would be!

The aforementioned teams are truly the most successful clubs in England and it will be interesting to see if any of them reaches this 134th FA Cup final in May.

FA Cup is the oldest football tournament in the history of soccer.
