Make a List of Everything You Need to Buy

One way to save yourself money and to lower holiday stress at the same time is to make a list. Most people already do this, but what they write down are the things that they plan to buy as gifts.

You need to go a step beyond that and put all of the things that make up the holiday on that list. Break the list into categories and label them as gifts, decorations, stocking stuffers, wrapping paper and supplies, food and last minute gifts.

You want to have some inexpensive last minute gifts on hand to wrap up for someone who might show up unexpectedly. These should be gift items that can be unisex – such as gift cards, a nice set of towels, a candle, or a throw blanket.

You want to write down gifts that you would like to get for each person. What can be helpful is to write down what you think you’re going to be able to get them, but then you need to have an alternative to the first choice.

It might even be helpful to have a second alternative to the original gift idea that you have. This way, if something is out of stock, you can simply move on to your next gift idea.

It can also be helpful after you have the person’s name on your list to write down some of their favorite things to do and some of their favorite foods. You might also want to write down their favorite colors, too.

That way, if you find a sweater or shirt for them, you’ll know what their favorite colors are. Always start your Christmas list with the people who mean the most to you.

That way, you’ll be sure to get the gifts for your loved ones taken care of first. People usually end up spending the most money on a partner or spouse followed by gifts for their children after that.

Next on the list, you want to make sure that you write down the names of the coworkers that you plan to buy gift items for. Sometimes, offices have a gift swap or gift exchange program – and this can really help save on the budget if you take part in that rather than trying to buy for everyone you work with.

When it comes to a boss, if you want to get a gift, getting a gift card to their favorite store is always a big hit. Avoid buying a boss anything too personal. Food baskets, wine baskets and cookie baskets are always a good idea if you don’t want to get a gift card.

You can also buy a special Christmas gift ornament to give to a boss or colleague. If you know they have a favorite sports team; those ornaments are really big sellers this year.

If you plan on getting gift cards for a teacher, you might want to avoid teacher related gift items. They always get plenty of these. It can be nice not to get something that’s associated with the job.

For that, you can pick up things like movie gift cards, music gift cards or holiday entertainment baskets. You can also pick up winter gloves, scarves or baking sets that have treats in them.

Don’t leave the pets out of the picture. If you have a pet, you want to be sure and make him part of the holiday sharing. You can get a stocking with your pet’s name and fill it with treats just for him.

You can get monogrammed pet dishes, pet dish pads or pet clothes. You can also get grooming items or leashes. Pet car seats or carriers are also good ideas if you’re thinking of giving any of these items as gifts to pet lovers in your family.

What most people do every year when it comes to décor is they use a lot of items that have sentimental meaning – such as putting up ornaments that have been passed down through the generations.

If you use an artificial tree, check your tree out before you put it up to make sure it’s not missing a lot of needles and that there aren’t any broken branches. Fluff it out and see how it looks.

You can buy new holiday decorations on sale during the big holiday sales events. What some consumers do is they rotate color themes. You can have red one year, silver the next or white and blue, etc.

You can find holiday bows, tinsel, Christmas bows or balls, tree skirts and candle holders. If you wrap your door in Garland or your staircase, then you might want to go ahead and get new garland.

Although some people do reuse their lights for the trees and outdoors, it’s always a good idea and a safer bet to buy new lights every year. You can find these on sale too.

Some people also buy new stockings every year, and you’ll be able to find beautifully decorated ones. There is a tradition in some families to buy stockings with wider openings so that the name of each family member can be placed on the stocking.

Don’t forget to buy treats for the stockings. You can fill it with candy, but you can also add small gift items such as gift cards, small journals, holiday pens, miniature dolls or vehicles and more.

Buy new wrapping paper to match your holiday color theme for a lovely, polished Christmas décor. If you have holiday paper left over from the previous year, this can be used to help wrap fragile items that need to be taken down and packed away until after the holidays.

When you’re picking up your wrapping paper, remember to grab a bag of bows or colorful ribbon to make your own. Pick up name tags and plenty of tape to wrap the packages.

Always get more tape than you think you’ll need. If you’re like some families, you have kids who want to try and guess what’s under the tree. To preserve the surprise and protect the gifts, be sure and buy an assortment of gift boxes.

If you’re planning to send out Christmas cards this year, buy them on sale and get them in the mail on the first of December so that people can enjoy them. Even food items and containers go on sale during the holiday sales events.

When you’re making your holiday food list, separate the food by categories of dairy, meat, produce, can/box/jar, frozen and bread. You can fit each food item under those categories.

If you’re planning on buying paper goods, just add a “paper goods” category. Be sure to pick up some extra food storage containers in case you have friends or family who want to take home some of the holiday food from your house.

It can seem overwhelming to get everything at once when you have a master list, but when you do that, you save money – plus, you’ll be able to have a relaxing holiday rather than a stressful one.

Make a Budget for Your Shopping

The time of the year when most people go into debt is at Christmas time. No matter how well you plan, it seems that the holidays always ends up kicking many wallets right where it hurts.

We overspend because we want to shower the people we care about with stuff to show them how much we care. We also overspend because we often feel guilty if someone gets us a gift, and we didn’t get them anything. So we buy unplanned gifts.

Or we find out that our children have to exchange a gift, and so we rush out to find a toy that’s suitable for that. And because we don’t want to seem like the Grinch, we can end up spending more on unplanned purchases than we meant to.

This is why the holiday sales events are so helpful. You can buy the stuff that you want to get and not blow the budget if you’re careful. You can find something for everyone on your list and buy taking advantage of the sales; you can end up getting some miscellaneous gifts to give for those unplanned events.

Know ahead of time that if you blow your budget at the end of the year, you could end up paying for it for months after the holidays are over. That, in turn, takes a bite out of the following year’s Christmas spending plan.

Because people do have big hearts and want to give nice gifts, we usually end up with a list that’s far too long. We have more people on it than we have money to spend.

What you have to do when that happens is to take a hard look at the list. If there’s anyone on there that you feel guilty about giving a gift to, you need to remove the name from the list.

The holidays aren’t about making sure that you keep everything fair. If someone gives you a gift and you hadn’t planned to give them one, just simply say thank you and move on.

But if you feel like you just have to reciprocate, then bake holiday cookies. You can make a batch a holiday cookies for next to nothing, place them in a decorative tin lined with holiday tissue paper and it makes a nice gift.

Next, take a look at the items on the list that you wrote down after each individual’s name. Maybe you wrote down that your nephew wants a new Xbox One.

Because you love him, you really would like to make that gift happen. But if you do and it makes you feel the pinch, then it’s not a good idea. As an alternative, you can buy him a game for his current console.

Or you could pick up one of the popular hand held gaming devices. You can save a lot of money simply by being creative with the gifts that you get. If you don’t want to overspend this holiday season, you have to set a spending limit.

Look over your budget and decide what you have to spend. Then look at the list of people you’d like to buy gifts for. Break them down by the amount that you’d like to spend on each person and don’t waver from that amount.

More often than not, the gift-giving becomes more about the giver than it does the receiver. We try to keep up with the Jones’s. What nobody tells you is that Jones’s are probably up to their hairline in debt and after the holidays, they’re going to be filled with regret.

When you’re shopping, look for cheaper brands. If you plan on buying a flat screen television, you can often find the same features that cost less in a different brand.

If you want to buy a gaming console, don’t simply buy the console. Search for bundle deals so that you get the console and some games. That way, you won’t be buying games separately.

Look for two for one deals. Sometimes, these sales events will have you pay for an item at one price, but you get the second item half off or for a discounted rate. You can give the same gift item to different people and be able to take care of buying for two people on your list at once.

Now, if you’ve whittled your list down as far as it goes and there’s still not enough for all of the things that you’d like to buy, then you have a choice to make. You either have to not buy for someone, or you have to bring in more income temporarily.

One way to do that is by taking on a seasonal job. You can find places looking for help everywhere. You can also sell some of the items that you have in your home or stored in your attic that you never use.

If you have services that you can do, you can hire yourself out to do that for a couple of months before the holidays to make the extra cash. You can even make money online writing for others!

Map Out Special Sales Days and Times

To get where you want to be, you need a plan. To get the most savings, you need a plan. Otherwise, you’re just hoping that you get all of the bargains that you’d like to have.

When it comes to the major holiday sales days, planning makes all the difference in the world to those who get what they want and those who are left disappointed.

What you have to do so that you’re not one of the ones left disappointed is to map out each of the days and the times they start. You also want to make a note of any hourly specials or extra perks.

Start by making a list of the sales day and the stores, both online and off, that are participating in the sale. When you do that, you can also make a note of which items the stores are going to have on sale.

You’ll run into cases where two or more stores will have the same items on sale. What you need to do is to figure out which one offers the greater bargain. Sometimes, it will look like one retailer will have the item cheaper.

But if you figure in the cost of shipping, that can end up making the purchase cost more than the store offering the item for a few dollars more but free shipping. So pay attention to details like that.

Also, look for any extras that the retailers are offering if you buy that item from them. Some stores give a free gift card or a bonus item. So be on the lookout for that.

Starting with the categories that you want to shop in, make a list of the ones that you want to get first. You’ll usually find sales in ones like appliances, television sets, game consoles, handheld devices, video games, laptops, desktops, toys and jewelry.

Clothing, shoes and fitness items like heart rate monitors, treadmills, and exercise equipment also go on sale. Each retailer will have special deals for customers. If you shop at Amazon, you’ll want to look for things like Gold Box Deals, Deal of the Day and Lightning Deals.

If you get a Deal of the Day, these are special buys that you can only get for that day. Other retailers have similar deals but under different names like doorbuster, etc.

So even if the retailer is participating in a week of sales for Black Friday, you’d only be able to get that particular deal on that one day. If you want to take part in a Lightning Deal, then you should know that these are items that are offered only in limited quantity – so not everyone is going to be able to get one.

You’ll want to pay attention and shop early for these. These deals are sometimes conditional with a coupon code. If you’re a member of Amazon’s Prime, you can also get special deals on sale that people who aren’t members don’t have access to.

The special holiday sales event Black Friday starts on Thanksgiving Day with some retailers. For ones that don’t choose to open during the day on Thanksgiving, the event begins officially at midnight though some retailers will open a little earlier.

Black Friday this year is on November 27. Cyber Monday this year begins on Monday, November 30 which is after the weekend following Black Friday so you’ll have a few days of savings.

If you plan correctly, you’ll be able to get everything you want to buy. These holiday shopping events are divided into online sales versus in person sales. Some of the stores offer doorbuster items that are of good value.

But there are some things you have to consider to determine if this is a good deal for you or not. Sometimes a doorbuster will require a lot of effort. You’ll have to drive to the store, fight for a parking spot, get through a horde of people and wait in line.

What some consumers discovered last year was that many of these doorbuster items could be purchased online for the same price. Besides saving the same amount of money and shopping from home, you’ll discover that you’ll often be one of the ones to get the item versus taking your chance at the store and maybe not ending up with one of the doorbusters.

There are some risks with the holiday shopping events. Sometimes consumers decide to wait until the last minute to buy what they’re looking for because retailers will often buy too much of a product in the hopes that they’ll have enough of the item to go around.

So savvy shoppers occasionally like to run the risk of waiting in the hopes that the retailer will mark the item down at an even greater discount. This does happen, but it is risky because you might end up not getting what you want.

The best way to shop these special sales days is to make sure that you don’t miss out on buying the items that you really want first. That way, you’ll at least have what you wanted the most.

Divide Your List Between Offline and Online Opportunities

There is a way to have the best of both worlds when these holiday sales roll around. You can make a list and plan to shop offline as well as online. That way, you don’t miss out on any of the great deals.

You’ll want to look at the value of the items that the stores offline are offering. In addition to doorbusters, you’ll often hear about loss leaders. These are items that the store will put out in the hopes that they’re going to draw in a large crowd of shoppers.

These are usually nice items, and the stores don’t even break even on these purchases. More often than not, these are big ticket items like computers and big screen televisions.

It doesn’t seem like a smart move on the part of the retailer, but it actually is – because studies have shown that when people go out shopping for holiday sales events, they never leave with just the item that they came for.

They end up buying more things, so the store then ends up with a profit. Some stores are going to balk and just absolutely refuse to put some of the better deals online.

For those, you’re going to have to go into the store to buy the item that you want. But make sure that getting it offline is truly a great deal. It can be a pain – especially when shopping for bigger items – trying to find a way to get it home if it won’t fit in your vehicle.

Plus, some of the bigger ticket items can be heavy. Check online deals to see if there’s an alternative to what you want to buy. You might be able to get it delivered straight to your door without a hassle and end up saving both time and money.

Most people assume that when it comes to getting ready to buy food items for the holidays, they have to get in their car and actually go to the store. But that’s no longer a necessity thanks to all of the stuff you can get online now.

You can get all of the food items that you need for your holiday entertainment baskets, for your parties and even for your holiday meals delivered right to your door.

If you look through the food categories that Amazon has, you’ll see that they carry everything from gourmet food to regular food to Christmas sweet treats. Plus, you can save money and get free shipping.

If you’re a member of their Prime system, then you can get the items brought out to you fast. There is a problem that you might run into during these holiday sales. Sometimes, the way that they’re structured, you’ll find that the times for the sales actually overlaps each other.

Since you can’t be in two places at once, that means you might run into a situation where you feel you’re going to miss out on deals. There is a solution to that problem.

For the things that you have to physically be in the store to buy, you can still take the time to shop online. When you’re buying at the retailer in person, the odds are good that you’re going to run into some wait times.

That’s when it’s a good idea to pull out your smartphone and shop right there while you’re waiting. By using your smartphone to shop while you’re out, it’s like you are in two places at once.

You’ll end up with double the savings. To get the most savings, group your shopping by sale items coupled with the places you have to go. Always figure in that it’s going to take you more time than you allot.

What some people do when deciding whether or not they’re going to shop offline is they figure the total amount of time it’s going to take them plus the amount they’re expected to save.

So if you can save $100 on an item and you make $20 an hour, then that means that your offline shopping needs to be worth your time. If it takes you three hours and in many cases, that’s figuring low, to get to the store, get the item and wait in line, then you’ve spent $60 of your time.

So you only actually ended up saving $40. If you shop online, and it takes you 5 minutes to drop the item into the cart and get it shipped, then you’ve saved more money.

You also have to look at how it affected you stress-wise. If you go out shopping for the deals, but it leaves you feeling stressed out and brings down your mood, then you might want to consider if it’s really worth it or not.

There are pros and cons for either way of shopping if you don’t want to combine the two ways of doing it. If you choose to shop offline, then you do get the special bargains that you won’t get if you’re not there.

These are special deals that are not advertised. You have to physically be there in order to even know what these deals are. And some of them are great bargains if you get one in the slotted “while supplies last” deal.

By shopping online, you have instant access to more items on sale than you would find in hours of going from store to store for the bargains. You end up with more categories because online stores aren’t limited by space the way that offline stores are.

You can often end up saving more money because, depending on which state you live in, you don’t end up paying tax – and that can be a huge savings on the more expensive items.

If you live in a state that charges 9% tax on items, that means on a $500 television, you’d pay another $45 in taxes. Many online retailers aren’t required to collect sales tax due to interstate commerce.

Using This Year’s Savings for 2016

It used to be many years ago that people planned out a year ahead of time. They knew the benefit of planning and always keeping ahead of the needs before it became a need.

For some reason, many people have gotten away from that kind of planning. The best thing about all the holiday sales that are right around the corner is that you can plan ahead for next year, and it won’t take you any effort at all.

Plus, the amount that you can save can be huge. The smart way to shop is to make sure that you’re looking for bargains on the items that you know you’re going to need.

When shopping ahead becomes a waste is when you buy things that you know you don’t need and will never use. Then that’s just throwing your money away. But big savings waits for people who plan ahead for their needs in 2016.

When you think about it, you buy the exact same items for the holidays every single year. You purchase gifts for the people that you love. You get items for friends.

You shop for coworkers. You run out to buy gifts for your child’s teacher, for your hairdresser, for the mail delivery person and on and on it goes. There are two ways to save big for the holidays and for the following year if you use these sales events the right way.

First, don’t just buy gifts during these sales. Don’t just limit yourself to items that you need for the house or some gadgets that you’ve been wanting to get. Look for deals on what you’d be picking up for the holidays anyway.

These are items that you buy every year without even thinking about it and sometimes, not having these items on hand can become a real time drain. If you’re wrapping presents and run out of wrapping paper or tape, then you have to stop what you’re doing, get in the car and drive to the store.

Before you know it, a couple of hours have passed, and when you get home, you still have all that wrapping left to do. So this year, make sure that you stock up ahead of time on wrapping paper and the staples like it so that you don’t fall short.

Pick up the clear tape that you know you’re going to use. Make sure that you buy the bows and ribbon and plenty of name tags. Pick up gift card boxes, too.

That way, if you have to, you can slip a gift card in a pre-decorated box and have a last minute gift all ready to go.

Buy your stockings and goodies for it during the sale (or even after Christmas) and you’ll be sure to save a bundle. Most people already know to take advantage of the sale to buy the staples that they have to have to get all of their Christmas needs taken care of.

But what people forget is that these items go on such a steep discount for these sales events that it makes sense and saves you money to go ahead and buy them for the next holiday season.

Because this is stuff that you’re going to use anyway, it’s not a waste of time of money. You can stock up on Christmas wrapping paper, and you’ll often find that you can the more expensive paper on sale cheaper than you can find regular wrapping paper.

Grab your bows and all the stuff that goes along with making your holiday look festive. Pick up the Christmas décor that you’ll need. You can buy things for your tree, Christmas rugs, throw blankets, stocking holders, mantel decorations and more.

Choose some holiday dinnerware to add to the sparkle of Christmas. You can find garland and lights and beautiful Christmas trees on sale during the sales events.

You can get shower curtains decorated in holiday themes – or bed linens. If you shop for Christmas items every year, you can end up decking your entire home out in the holiday spirit.

Watch out for evergreen items to buy as gifts. These are gift items that will keep and still be a good idea to give the following year. You’ll find these in things like sweaters, hats, scarves, and gloves.

You can choose belts, cufflinks, bracelets and other assorted jewelry. If you find electronic deals this year shortly after Christmas or before, grab those up to give as gifts for the following year.

Stock up on movies and kids’ games. When you end up buying in advance for the next year like this, you stay ahead financially. This way, you’ll end up having even more money left over in 2016 to be able to spend.

Doing this is a great way to save money, to get the gifts that you want and even to spoil yourself with a few gift items!

Atlanta Falcons Indepth Review vs Minnesota Vikings 2015

atlanta falcons indepth review vs minnesota 2015 nfl imagesAtlanta Falcons Indepth Recap – Falcons 10 Minnesota Vikings 20

No Devonta Freeman. No Leonard Hankerson. This meant two things. A heavy workload for Julio Jones against the Minnesota Vikings and also less dropped balls due to Hankerson’s absence.

Minnesota came into the Georgia Dome hoping to get back on track after getting lashed by Green Bay last week.

The two teams opened up the game by swapping punts. Atlanta was getting to the oft-sacked Teddy Bridgewater consistently early, but the Vikes’ QB was managing to find his tight ends when he needed a quick option.

Minnesota got on the board first after overcoming a taunting call on rookie sensation Stefon Diggs and an embarrassing drop by Adrian Peterson. The Vikings ended up in the end zone when AP took it in on the ground. 7-0 purple and gold.

On the Falcons’ second offensive drive they kept feeding Tevin Coleman. Freeman’s replacement finally found some daylight after a crushing block by Patrick DiMarco, yet had the most Falconesque thing happen ever. Coleman had the ball dislodged after he broke free for 46 yards and was looking to score. Use the jumbotron my man.

Coleman is now officially diagnosed with fumblitis, a malady that ends many a young runner’s career.

The Vikings were set up with the ball after the turnover and they stayed with the plan to feed AP early and often. They also kept working the ball to the tight ends. The drive ate some clock yet ended with Atlanta’s Ricardo Allen snatching Bridgewater’s pass in the endzone. Birds back in business at their own 20 after the touchback on the pick.

This Falcons drive should have resulted in more points as Minnesota was forced to go with two backup safeties after another injury during the drive. Atlanta settled for a FG with replacement kicker Shayne Graham, who filled in for Matt Bryant who sat out with an injury suffered in practice. The Birds were not helped by a dumb penalty on the sideline by Terron Ward. FG good, 7-3 Vikes still up.

Neither QB exactly made a case for MVP in the first half. Ryan wrapped his team’s two-minute drill up with a typical pick as they neared the red zone. Just another bad throw by Ryan, who now has 11 on the year.

Teddy Bridgewater dinked and dunked his way to a long FG try that was missed by Blair Walsh with two seconds left in the half. The Falcons took a knee which while not exciting was better than bizarro padding the pick stats for Matt Ryan. 7-3 Vikings heading to halftime.

Three points by the Falcons at home!

Atlanta opened up the second half with the ball. The Birds began stretching the field a bit and Tevin Coleman was running hard while holding the ball a bit tighter. The home team appeared to be rolling when Coleman took the ball in from a yard out to score, only to have it nullified by a questionable clipping call. A series of ugly play calls and a Vikings’ penalty led to a couple minutes of ‘how not to play pro ball.’ The drive ended with, I’m not making this shit up, Matt Ryan throwing an interception in the end zone to Terence Newman.

Ryan’s picks are not ones that could be prevented by his receivers turning into defenders. The Falcons leader is throwing balls right to defenders as if he were a rookie. Incomprehensible.

The Vikings took over after the Ryan turnover and turned the pick into three points after getting conservative near the red zone. Vikings 10-3 and in good shape despite the commentators saying the “Falcons have to feel pretty good only being down seven.” I have no idea why Atlanta would feel good about their team in any way.

Four plays and out for Atlanta and they punt it back. Julio has three catches for just 36 yards to this point.

Minnesota added to their lead with a 39-yard field goal making it a two-score game with 6:24 left to go. AP ate up most of the drive as he showed why he’s averaging a league-best 8.1 yards per carry in the fourth quarter. 13-3 Vikes in Atlanta’s house.

Atlanta got a big return by Eric Weems to set them up in good field position at their 39. The drive went nowhere as the ATL looked sluggish and clueless. Tevin Coleman dropped a long ball on the sideline then the drive ended on fourth down with a quick sack of Matt Ryan.

The Vikings wasted no time as AP went 35 yards to score making the game out of reach at 20-3. Peterson now sits on 99 touchdowns for his career.

Atlanta got a too little too late TD on a catch from Nick Williams to make it 20-10 Vikings. The onside kick fails and Minnesota runs the clock out.

Atlanta drops to 6-5. Vikings move to 8-3.

Falcons vs. Vikings Game Hightlights:

3 Things:

  • Atlanta cannot get a sack. They get pressure, but can’t seem to close the deal. They came into this game with just 12 sacks on the year. Last in the NFL. Denver leads the NFL with 34 coming into week 12.

  • Turnovers are killing the Falcons. Tevin Coleman must have wanted to take the pressure off Matt Ryan, who is now pick-happy. Coleman’s first half fumble made it three cough ups in 30 carries.

  • Atlanta’s number one rated rushing defense was gashed by Peterson for 158 yards and two TDs.

Julio watch:

  • First catch of the game didn’t come until after 18 minutes had rolled off the game clock. The big man was never targeted deep in the first half.

  • 5 catches for 56 yards on the game, outpaced by Roddy White and Jacob Tamme.

  • If this was T.O., we would have a meltdown in the locker room.

Tweets of the Game:

Things are bad, but let’s not get stupid.

https://twitter.com/lvngr8/status/671049877061791744

Cute little catch phrases won’t help. Sacks from the ATL defense and fewer turnovers from our $100 million dollar quarterback would help.

Not the most exciting first half ever.

Matty Ice just can’t help himself and leads the league in a dubious stat column.

Not a compliment in case anyone is wondering.

No comment be best.

‘The Walking Dead’ 608 Start To Finish Blowout Finale

the walking dead 608 start finale 2015 images michonneThe Walking Dead: Season 6, Episode 8 – Start to Finish

This week marked the mid season finale of “The Walking Dead.” Once again Team Grimes has to deal with a threat to their new homestead. The producers felt the need to hit us over the head with the symbolism of the invading ants attacking the leftover food in Sam’s room.

We get it. The Alexandrians can’t hide from the ugliness of the world any longer, just like Sam can’t stay hold up in his room with his mom bringing him snacks upon request.

Reality is at the front door in the form of hungry zombies and the Townies can’t stay above the horror any longer.

We got to see the full damage done by the tower falling on the wall section this week. The section that fell is too big to fix quickly, even if the survivors could somehow lure away the walkers. That’s a plan for another day as we see each and every character in full retreat.

Rick does stand around wasting a few bullets as if killing six of the 1,000 walkers is going to matter much. Deanna actually helps, getting him to run away before he gets overrun.

the walking dead 608 start to finish 2015 maggie imagesMaggie had to go American Ninja Warrior as she nearly got knocked off a ladder. I’m thinking some obstacle course training might be best for the group in the future. If there is a future, it could help in situations like this.

Eugene is useless as usual, standing like a scared child as Rosita and Tara save his sorry ass. It doesn’t take long for the walkers to occupy Alexandria. Their sheer numbers have all the humans all locking themselves inside any home they can reach.

Of course, Glenn and Enid can see all the carnage from outside the walls. Emo Enid is not too positive about the chances of those inside so Glenn gives her a pep talk. It would take Knute Rockne to get that girl pumped up though.

Once Sam sees his mom and her group scrambling into the upstairs he has to face the situation. Jessie asks Sam to “be someone else,”  if he can’t be brave on his own. He can’t. Little guy probably pooped himself by now.

The best pairing was Carol and Morgan as they’re forced into a home together to evade the herd. She’s got a nasty head injury and is likely concussed. No time for an NFL-type concussion protocol. The walkers aren’t gonna wait on her to recover before they start munching her her body. The two badasses are with the doctor and Morgan’s prisoner Wolf.

This situation is going to get ugly.

What can you say once you get bit in this universe, realizing your life is over and you’ll soon become a flesh eating monster that will try to kill your friends? “Well shit,” sure sums it up . Those were the words of Deanna after she saw her wound. She had been going downhill ever since Reggie bit the dust at the town hall meeting so it’s not like she was going to live to see 75 years old anyway.

Michonne is broken up about Deanna’s fate and they discuss the future plans that were drawn up by Deanna. The former politician makes it clear to Michonne that she needs to figure out what the future plans will mean for her as an individual. Deanna has known how powerful Michonne is ever since the Samurai conked Rick on the head during his insane rant in the streets.

We know Ron was going to try and kill Carl but got interrupted by the herd invasion. They’re trapped together and we get to hear Ron whine about how all is lost. There’s a lot of give up in these Townies! Ron figures he’ll go ahead and try to kill Carl now since he’s sure everyone is going to bite the dust soon. He fails of course but the fight breaks some glass allowing the undead to flow in.

Carl covers for Ron when Rick and his crew let them inside the main house. When the two are alone Carl takes his weapon and coldly tells Ron what he needs to hear, “Your dad was an asshole.” Carl’s got a great point. Why be so vengeful for a guy that beat your mom?

We almost had a human get hacked up because of a case of mistaken identity. Rick nearly put the axe on Deanna as she creepily hung over Judith’s crib. I told you she looked rough! She hadn’t turned yet though and was just trying to quiet the child. A couple more hours and Deanna would be snacking on the kid’s ears.

Deanna asks Rick to watch over her son Spencer once she’s dead. She asks him to watch over him like one of his own people. “They are all your people now Rick. That’s why I ran over to help you, cause you’re one of us,” she told him.

Eugene update. Still useless. That is unless a world history trivia contest becomes relevant. Rosita and Tara talk about the place not being lost just yet. I’ve got the same feeling. I don’t know how Alexandria can be saved, but it is worth staying and fighting for. The set up is the best the survivors have found so far.

The battle between Carol and Morgan begins when she makes a move to kill off his prisoner. I find it strange that Morgan would be willing to hurt Carol to protect the savage Wolf. But there he stood in between her and this evil bastard. His philosophy is simply flawed.

As Rick devises an escape plan with the camo guts routine, Carol is so eager to kill the Wolf member you can nearly taste it. Morgan says, “With life there’s possibility.” He’s wasting time trying to convince her of any of that Zen talk.

She means to kill the threat before her.

Michonne gets to the meaning of the Latin phrase written on the plans from Deanna as Michonne offered to mercifully kill the former leader of Alexandria. “Someday this pain will be useful to you.”

Deanna passes on her offer, deciding to do it herself when the time comes.

We see little Sam on the verge of a mental break. This kid will be scarred for life and after this disaster.

Carol is willing to die if that’s what it takes to kill Morgan’s prisoner. I love it. She is a total badass, unafraid of anyone or anything now! She makes her move on Morgan, but he winds up with the advantage and eventually slams her, knocking her out.

What’s he get for his efforts? Cracked on the dome by the Wolf as the doctor watches in horror. She tries to reason with the guy to get him to spare Carol and Morgan. That’s barely helpful, but then Rosita and Tara burst in before anything happens. Eugene is there too, but….useless.

The doc is taken hostage and Tara and Rosita drop their weapons as the Wolf member commands. This is off base from what Rosita’s character would do in my opinion. No way she drops her gun and tosses it over to a dangerous guy like this. Go back to Kevin Costner inOpen Range for the right philosophy on giving up guns when faced with villains. There is no point! If the bad guy already has the advantage, why give him even more leverage by handing over your only defense against him?

And so the Wolf still has the doc as a hostage, only now he has guns to boot and could have easily just shot Tara and Rosita for their trouble.

Rick and crew go full on Brad Pitt in “World War Z” as they breeze right past the horde of uninvited walkers in the lower part of the house. Things are going to break down though as Sam starts calling his mom’s name when they hit the streets. I can see Jessie giving the kid a backhand to shut him up.

But we’ll have to wait until after the winter break to find out. Will Glenn and Enid be of any help to those trapped in the city? Also, how much longer until Daryl, Sasha, and Abe get back to Alexandria?

Lots to be answered when “The Walking Dead” gets back with episode nine in mid February. I’m guessing more than one character’s not going to make it to episode ten. This walker invasion is too big for everyone to make it out alive.

Is Black Friday or Cyber Monday Better for Deals?

Is Black Friday or Cyber Monday Better 2015 imagesThe biggest holiday shopping days are undoubtedly Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But the question remains – is Black Friday or Cyber Monday better? To find out, just consider the facts.

Keeping checking our Cyber Monday section as we’ll continually update it along with Cyber Monday for your shopping convenience. You can also check out Amazon’s Black Cyber Monday deals here as they’ll keep changing as fast as a Kardashian’s Instagram page.

More people buy items online on Cyber Monday than they do on Black Friday. The amount that people spend are about the same on both of the shopping sale days. However, there are more bargains to find online than there are in the actual retail stores – which means you end up saving more so you get more when you shop on the Internet.

Plus, there are all the comfort perks that go along with Cyber Monday. First, you don’t have to drag yourself out of your warm bed at the crack of dawn to rush out in the dark so you can get to the store and get what you want.

Before someone else takes all the stuff that you wanted. With Cyber Monday, you avoid the early morning rush. You also don’t have to get into your vehicle and drive all over town to find the deals.

You don’t have to stand in the never ending line wandering if you’ll see the checkout before Christmas. By shopping on Cyber Monday, you can sleep in. You can find everything you want just by typing in what you’re looking for.

There won’t be any lines and you can have all your stuff brought right to your doorstep. If you’re wondering what kind of stuff you can get, you can get whatever it was that you could get on Black Friday.

The difference is you save money and you get what you want. Furniture goes on sale during both holiday events. What a lot of the retailers do is offer a percentage like 10% off for every $100 that you spend so that ends up a huge savings for you if you’re looking for new furniture.

cyber monday amazon deals 2015 images techGet things like kitchen tables and chairs, ottomans, recliners, beds, dressers and more. Kohl’s, JC Penny and Sears all had huge savings on a variety for furniture last year. Keep an eye out for Ikea specials for Cyber Monday because you can find some of their furniture for 20% off the regular price.

But the big splash was on sofa sales last year. You can even get expensive leather sofas at steep discounts. For sofas this year, you’re going to want to watch La-Z-Boy, Simmons and Serta brand sofas to go on sale.

Look for the Lifestyle Solutions when it comes to the Serta brand. Remember that unlike Black Friday where you’d have to arrange for delivery of the furniture yourself, you can have a new sofa delivered directly to your door for Cyber Monday – and all of the other great products you buy that day, too!

Ronda Rousey Surfaces With Fresh Face & Ice T’s Chanel Hits

ronda rousey fresh faced after fight 2015 gossipAfter over two weeks, MMA fighter Ronda Rousey finally emerged following her loss on November 14th. Unfortunately, Ronda, 28, was shaken when she faced her first career loss against 34-year-old Holly Holm. Ronda was immediately hospitalized after she lost the UFC 193 match and Women’s Bantamweight championship to her opponent.  She was defeated as Holly delivered a forceful kick to Ronda’s head.

Following the loss, Ronda was placed on medical suspension. This means that the athlete cannot fight for 60 days and is not allowed to have contact for 45. In addition, Ronda also got stitches to her lip at the hospital and underwent a CT scan. Reports claim that if the scan shows any brain damage from impact Ronda’s suspension will extend to 6 months.

Ronda, who is usually outspoken and confident in front of the cameras, has been in hiding for the past while and covered her face as she headed through the airport following her loss. Therefore, people were surprised to see her casually strolling with her boyfriend and fellow MMA fighter Travis Browne, as they walked their pit bull around downtown Los Angeles over the weekend.

Currently, Ronda’s medical condition remains unknown. However, her opponent Holly Holmes has expressed that she is open to a rematch. While on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Holly stated, “I’ve been on the other end of a losing bout before, getting knocked out and having to come back. I did avenge my loss, and I know that she’ll be wanting to do the same.”

Andy Murray Takes Davis Cup for Britain 2015

The 2015 Davis Cup is over and the ‘team’ event has been won by Great Britain. Andy Murray defeated Belgium’s David Goffin in straight sets on Sunday to give the Brits a 3-1 victory in the final tie. The win marks the first victory in the event for the British since 1936, but perhaps it also highlights the need for the Davis Cup, as a team competition, to better test the depth of a country’s tennis talent. After all, the victory for the ‘British team’ is largely a credit to Andy Murray and no one else.

Murray was a part of all three victories that the Brits needed to win the 2015 Davis Cup. He won two singles matches and he was on the doubles team that won the third rubber. While he couldn’t have won the doubles match without a partner, that fact only affords a sliver of credit to another player involved in British tennis. The Davis Cup can’t quite be won by one player, however if an elite player like Murray is playing his best then, we have to admit, it barely takes another. That makes the notion of the Davis Cup being a team event almost dubious.

The event would probably be a lot more interesting if it moved to best-of-seven rubbers, at least for the final two rounds. That would require four victories and, with matches best-of-five sets, it would be very risky for one player to play in all four matches without facing a realistic threat of injury or at least fatigue. That in turn would force peripheral players into the limelight more often than the current format does. In turn, the Davis Cup would better reveal the country that has the best depth of tennis talent – something a team competition should reveal.

Murray, almost always a class act, interviewed as a member of a team. Accordingly, he took credit using the plural pronoun as opposed to the singular:

“It feels amazing. I never thought WE would have the opportunity to do this. I can’t believe WE did it,” the Scot said (emphasis added).

Murray won, either single-handedly or with a doubles partner, 11 of the 12 matches that Great Britain won this year in the Davis Cup. If the event did move to best-of-seven then a true team would need to win 16 matches to win the event, not just 12. With a player like Murray winning or contributing to 11 victories again, that would still leave a balance of 5 matches for the scrubs to pick up – not just one.

Currently, the best countries for tennis depth are both Spain and France in my opinion. Those are the nations that have tough players to beat even when you get well past their No. 1s. For example, Spain’s No. 4 is Roberto Bautista-Agut while France’s No. 4 is Benoit Paire. Each of those two players would likely rip apart the No. 2s of both Belgium and Great Britain.

However, under the current format, it’s the latter who gets the credit for having the best tennis ‘team.’ While the Brits are celebrating that fact, I think the one-player-dominated results highlight the need for change if Davis Cup titles are truly to be regarded as reflections on a team.

Cyber Monday Protection Tips 2015

cyber monday protection tips 2015 imagesCyber Monday brings out specials of all kinds that we wait for, but it also brings out a lot of people ready to bilk you out of your hard-earned dollars. They do this is many forms, and one big one is malware and phishing schemes that can really ruin your holiday season.

Keeping checking our Cyber Monday section as we’ll continually update it along with Cyber Monday for your shopping convenience. You can also check out Amazon’s Black Cyber Monday deals here as they’ll keep changing as fast as a Kardashian’s Instagram page.

Here’s some great tips on how to protect yourself and your loved ones from getting hit. We know more and more sites are getting hacked, so being prepared will keep you safe.

Some shoppers have already gotten off to a head start online. Of those planning on exchanging gifts this year, 57 percent of consumers have already made at least one purchase online, per the National Retail Federation.

The Federal Trade Commission has issued its top 10 tips for online shopping during the holidays.

  • Make a list and a budget. Include incidentals, like cards, wrapping paper and eating out.
  • Check out websites that compare prices for items sold online, and at stores in your area.
  • Be aware that shopping apps can collect a lot of information, like your name, address, phone number, email, and Social Security number. Look for apps that tell you what they do with your data, and how they keep it secure.
  • Check out product warranties. Although not required by law, warranties come with most major purchases.
  • Don’t give out personal information for a chance to win the newest tech toy or a free gift card. Your information can be sold or used to commit identity theft.
  • Look for rebates. Some can be redeemed at checkout, but most require you to send documentation to the manufacturer to get your rebate.
  • When shopping online, keep copies of your order number, the refund and return policies, shipping costs and warranties.
  • If money’s tight, consider layaway. You typically make a deposit and pay over time; the retailer holds the merchandise until you’ve paid for the item in full.
  • Shipping to loved ones overseas? Check the U.S. Postal Service’s calendar for shipping deadlines.
  • ‘Tis the season to be wary, especially of charities that don’t — or won’t — provide key information in writing. Search the name of the organization online. Use the words “complaints” or “scam.”
  • When shopping online, make sure you see the ‘https’ when you’re on a purchase site. That helps let you know that the website has your information protected and encrypted to avoid scammers getting your credit card info or any personal identification. Amazon is one site you can count on to not worry about.

How Does Cyber Monday Work?

how does cyber monday work 2015 techYou’ve heard of Cyber Monday, and you know that’s like a sister to Black Friday, but do you really know what it’s all about? Here’s a breakdown of just what Cyber Monday is and a little history to go with it.

Keeping checking our Cyber Monday section as we’ll continually update it along with Cyber Monday for your shopping convenience. You can also check out Amazon’s Black Cyber Monday deals here as they’ll keep changing as fast as a Kardashian’s Instagram page.

There are few sale days as anticipated during the year as Cyber Monday is. That’s because so many items go on sale for such great prices, you can find everything you need and want.

How does Cyber Monday work? It’s pretty simple. Every year, retailers put loads of items on sale as discounted rates. Some of them will also offer you a lot of bonus perks if you choose to buy from them rather than their competitor.

You can get these items by ordering them online from the retailer. Things that are really popular during this sale are electronic readers. These e-readers have become a staple in many homes already.

Not only do adults love them, but so do kids. They’re handy – plus, they encourage kids to enjoy reading. A variety of different e-readers go on sale, so you have a lot of different options to choose from.

Take last year, for example. When the sale arrived, Kindle sales skyrocketed as people ordered these devices at steep discounts. You could easily find one for $20 or more off the retail price.

This year, keep your eye out for sales on the Kindle 6” glare-free model that makes reading a breeze even when you’re outside on a bright sunny day. The model weighs less than an actual paperback book does, yet it can hold numerous books.

It has a long lasting battery that will give you weeks of reading pleasure. It has some perks for kids like Vocabulary Builder and more. The purchase includes the opportunity to try out Kindle Unlimited at no charge for a trial period.

You’re going to also want to watch for a sale on the new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. This offers high resolution for the reading display and has a built-in light that can change to make reading even easier.

It comes with Bookerly, which helps prevent eyestrain. It offers consumers features such as Page Flip and Family Library, to help you get even more out of your purchase. The battery lasts as long as six weeks.

Also, look for sales on the Kindle Voyage. This e-reader has a sensor that knows what environment it’s in – whether it’s light or dark – and it will self-adjust the lighting to make it easy on your eyes as you read. This is a high-resolution e-reader with 300 ppi. It comes with PagePress sensors, a long lasting battery, and built-in Wi-Fi.

Watch for the Kindle for Kids Bundle to go on sale. With this deal, you get the newest Kindle version plus 24-month protection against accidental damage to the device and a cover for the Kindle.

cyber monday amazon deals 2015 images tech

A history of Cyber Monday:

Back in the day, Americans spent hours fighting traffic, crowds and sore feet in order to tackle their Holiday shopping list. But on Monday, many will finish all of their shopping in minutes by barely lifting a finger.

Cyber Monday has changed Holiday shopping forever — but there was a time not so long ago when online shopping was practically unthinkable.

A video produced by Mashable describes the rise of Black Friday in the 1980s, as retailers began to realize that Americans would use the Friday after Thanksgiving to complete their holiday shopping. As more retailers encouraged “Door Buster” deals and early-morning shopping, crowds became larger and harder to control. The peak came in 2008, when a Walmart employee was trampled to death by a crowd of shoppers.

With Black Friday crowds growing out of control in the early 200s and internet connections becoming faster and more widely available, online shopping began to look much more attractive to consumers. Researches began to notice that consumers continued to shop online into the work week, as most Americans had a more reliable internet connection at their jobs.

In 2005, the National Retail Federation first used the term “Cyber Monday” in a press release. Online retailers jumped on the bandwagon, and the unofficial shopping holiday continues to grow to this day.

So now you know what exactly Cyber Monday is and how it came about. Much like Valentine’s Day, it was cooked up by the retail stores as just another way to get you spending your hard earned dollars.

Is Cyber Monday Worth It? Plus Some Hot Deals

is cyber monday worth it 2015 techCyber Monday is obviously just as gimmicky as Black Friday, but the big question is ‘are all those deals advertised worth all the anxiety and work?’ There are some sale events that are flat out gimmicks. Some are hassles, and some will offer sale items, but have such a limited supply of the sale items that only a handful of people are able to get any kind of savings.

Keeping checking our Cyber Monday section as we’ll continually update it along with Cyber Monday for your shopping convenience. You can also check out Amazon’s Black Cyber Monday deals here as they’ll keep changing as fast as a Kardashian’s Instagram page.

This kind of experience with sales that weren’t helpful have some people trying to decide – is Cyber Monday worth it? But for people who think like that, it’s only because they haven’t experienced the fun of getting great items at unbelievable prices before.

It’s definitely worth it to get the things you want to have for yourself or others and save money in the process. When you think about the sale day, think about big-ticket items that you could get.

With the majority of these, you end up saving hundreds of dollars. So if you’re in the market for something like a new appliance, then you need to make a list of the items you want and go shopping on Cyber Monday.

You can find things such as refrigerators. And not the low end, off brand ones either. You can find top of the line, name brand refrigerators on sale. Online stores like Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, Amazon and more had appliances on sale.

Last year, there were Kenmore refrigerators on sale, both the 18 as well as the 25 cu ft on sale. You could get the standard model or the side by side even in the popular stainless steel.

Plus, the amount that some people were able to save on a refrigerator was as much as $1,000 on some models like the Kenmore 22.1 cu. ft French door one that had the bottom freezer.

Because some of the most popular refrigerators were on sale, you can expect that again this year. Keep an eye on the LG 20.7 cu. ft. refrigerator that’s made for counter depth. That’s a popular choice, and so are the four-door refrigerators. Those will be highly popular sale items.

If you’ve never used a four door refrigerator, once you get it, you’ll love it and won’t ever want to switch back to what you had before. The one to watch for sale this year is the Samsung 28. 15 cu. ft. French Door model that also has an ice maker. The finish for this one is stainless steel.

Besides being on the lookout for sales with refrigerators, you want to look for stoves like the GE Profile 30” slide in that has the smooth surface top which are always easier to clean than models that aren’t smooth surface.

While you’re looking for refrigerators or a stove, don’t forget to look up how much you can save on a new washer and dryer while you’re at it. In some cases, you can save so much on one appliance, it’s almost as if the second one is free.

Caitlyn Jenner Bangs It Out & Porsche Claims Paul Walker’s Fault for Crash

caitlyn jenner bangs it out 2015 gossipOn Friday, reality star and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner sported a new hairstyle while out and about in Los Angeles. The 66-year-old was photographed leaving an L.A. movie theatre donning dark brunette locks with bangs.

Since her transition earlier this year, Caitlyn has kept her hair fairly similar to her natural color and is often seen with it down in loose curls. Thus, this is the first big hair transformation for the star since she declared publicly she was transgender.

Over the past few months, Caitlyn has seemingly become more and more comfortable with embracing her own feminine fashion and even documented her ability to wear a women’s bathing suit in public for the first time on her docu-series, I Am Cait.

While she has received mainly praise for her fashion choices thus far, Caitlyn has also been called out for seemingly being inspired by Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge. This speculation is further fueled by Caitlyn’s change in hairstyle, as it is eerily similar to Kate’s. In addition, Caitlyn was photographed wearing the same sapphire dress in October that Kate wore when she announced her engagement to Prince William.

Clearly, Caitlyn is pulling inspiration from some of the most powerful women in the world, as actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie also inspired her when it came to the gown she wore for the 2015 ESPY awards.

porshe claims paul walkers fault for crash 2015 gossipAlmost two years after the untimely and tragic death of Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker, another lawsuit has been filed regarding the cause behind the accident that took Paul’s life.

Back in September, Paul’s daughter Meadow Walker filed a lawsuit against car company Porsche, as she believed it was due to their car’s poor design that her father passed away. Unfortunately, Porsche denied this claim and stated that Paul “knowingly and voluntarily assumed all risk, perils and danger in respect to the use of the subject 2005 Carrera GT.”

In addition, Paul’s friend Roger Rodas was also killed in the accident. Thus, his widowed wife, Kristine, opted to sue Porsche as well. In her claim, she alleged that there were faulty parts in the car’s suspension system that exuberated the severity of the crash.

Based on findings by investigators, it was evident that both Paul and Roger were wearing seat belts and both of their airbags deployed upon impact. Additionally, the investigators note that there was neither drugs nor alcohol in both of their systems at the time. However, they did feel that the victims were driving at an “unsafe speed for the roadway conditions,” with the coroner stating about 100mph.

Although neither Meadow nor Kristine’s lawsuits have been resolved, Paul’s father Paul Walker III has also chosen to file a wrongful death suit against Porsche. In his claim, Paul alleges that the car his son was a passenger in “lacked safety features that are found on well-designed racing cars or even Porsche’s least expensive road cars – features that could have prevented the accident, or, at a minimum, allowed Paul Walker to survive the crash.”

Unfortunately, Porsche continues to refute claims made in the numerous lawsuits involving this accident. The company tells NBC Los Angeles that the car was “abused and altered” and “misused or improperly maintained.”

MMA Weekly: Cathal Pendred Retires, Cro Cop Suspended & TUF Tryouts

MMA Weekly Cathal Pendred Retires Cro Cop 2015 ufc imagesThis Week in MMA: Plenty of Announcements, Some Solid Fights

Thanksgiving week has brought some interesting MMA UFC news—as well as some exciting fights—for fans. Accordingly, there’s a good deal of information to recap. Let’s take a look!

UFC Lightweight Title Challenger Announces Weight Drop

Gray Maynard has announced that he is planning to leave the lightweight division for one hundred and forty-five pounds, on the heels of a four-fight losing streak.

Most widely known for his awesome trilogy against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, Maynard hasn’t been able to find his groove after his last loss to “The Answer”—although the level of competition that he’s been competing against certainly has something to do with his limited success (many fans considered the Guida win to be more of a loss for “The Carpenter” than a win for Maynard, as well).

While the move has been criticized by many fans, only Maynard knows if the drop is a good idea or not; in fact, he may have some good success at featherweight. However, a single loss in this new division would be disastrous for the thirty-six-year old’s Octagon career, likely resulting in a cut.

Hopefully “The Bully” will find some success in his new division.

The UFC Announces Tryouts for Another TUF Season

In a more minor development, the UFC announced that it will be holding tryouts for the next season of TUF, in both women’s strawweight and bantamweight, as well as men’s light heavyweight.

The promotion is certainly trying to secure some talent where it’s needed, but TUF may not be the best way to do so. The talent levels of the competition have dropped steadily, as more fighters sign straight to the UFC and other big-name promotions.

Additionally, the TUF format—which has remained largely unchanged—has become incredibly bland after over twenty-five total seasons! The promotion will have a hard time getting any sizable number of viewers to tune in (as they have this season, even with the star power of McGregor).

Nevertheless, the show is a great way for up-and-coming fighters to get their foot in the UFC—hopefully some solid talent and format changes will accompany this season (a return to the TUF Live format is unlikely, but would be a step in the right direction).

Bellator Announces Italy Event Date

Bellator has announced that its recently unveiled Italy event will take place on April 16th.

The promotion will cooperate with Oktagon Kickboxing to bring both kickboxing and MMA fights to the event, although it is being reported that only MMA bouts will air live on Spike.

Bellator bolstered its middleweight division for the show, as it was also revealed that UFC veteran and exciting Italian MMA fighter Alessio Sakara had been signed to the promotion, and will compete on the card.

This is certainly an exciting event and development for all—especially Italian fans.

USADA Suspends “Cro Cop” For Two Years

Although it was inevitable, the USADA has handed out its suspension to Mirko Cro Cop for his HGH-positive drug test earlier this month.

The now-retired veteran probably won’t be feeling the suspension very much, but it’s still an unfortunate way to (likely) end his MMA career. Nevertheless, he is certainly going out with a bang in terms of his last fight—a dominant, revenge knockout over Gabriel Gonzaga to even the score (as Gonzaga previously defeated him).

Major Promotions Make Exciting Fight Announcements

Most every large MMA organization made at least one exciting fight announcement over the week.

Bellator announced that Roufsport-prospect Emmanuel Sanchez will clash with UFC-veteran Daniel Pineda at February’s Bellator 149 (which is main-evented by Shamrock vs. Gracie). It’s telling that Pineda wasn’t resigned by the UFC following his latest three-fight win streak; it will be interesting to see if this trend continues in the future, with other fighters.

Nevertheless, this is a solid fight that hardcore fans can get excited for—and the main and co-main events should do well to draw additional eyes to these ever-improving athletes.

Turning around quickly, fan-favorite Josh Barnett will look to build on his latest win over Roy Nelson in his next contest against the surging Ben Rothwell, on January 30th.

Both long-time veterans are coming off impressive victories, and another triumph here will (especially in Rothwell’s case) move each of them much closer to a title shot.

Plainly, this is a solid match-up that should make for an awesome fight.

Invicta announced that its biggest star—Cris “Cyborg”—will compete once again inside the organization, against Cindy Dandois in January.

This isn’t much of a surprise, given Rousey’s recent loss; “Rowdy” versus Cyborg was the fight that most fans wanted to see. But, from competing and losing in Muay Thai to her delaying of fighting Rousey, Cyborg frankly doesn’t make very intelligent decisions in regards to her career (more pressingly, her management doesn’t do so either).

Even with another win here, she won’t get a crack at the UFC champ for quite a while. And the promotion doesn’t really need to be very urgent in signing her now, as the aforementioned match (and payday) has been squashed.

Still, this will be interesting to watch.

Finally, the World Series of Fighting announced some solid additions to WSOF 26, namely that featherweight champion Lance Palmer will battle Marcos Alexandre in the main event, and that Tyrone Spong will make his return to the MMA cage against Jake Heun in the co-main tilt.

Both solid fights with some of the promotion’s most impressive stars, WSOF 26 is building up to be an enjoyable card.

Cathal Pendred Announces Retirement

UFC welterweight Cathal Pendred has announced his retirement from the sport at just twenty-eight years of age.

Citing a lost interest in the sport, the Irishman will retire with a solid TUF run and a four and two UFC record (although some of these wins were very controversial).

As is commonly the case when fighters with back-to-back losses retire, the UFC may have informed Pendred of his termination, resulting in his decision to call it a career while still under the promotion’s banner. This is especially believable given the frankly poor general reception he had with the fans.

Nevertheless, the door will be open—and quite possibly used—for Pendred to return to the sport, given his age.

UFC 194 Loses Waterson, Gets Replacement

One of the biggest fight cards of the year had a bit of a scare when women’s strawweight Michelle Waterson announced that she would be withdrawing from her scheduled bout against Tecia Torres.

On very short notice, Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger has stepped up to battle Torres—and the promotion is certainly thankful for the initiative.

Hopefully, Waterson will be back in action soon.

UFC Seoul Delivers, Despite Late Injuries

UFN 79 had some exciting and interesting bouts, despite losing its main and co-main event fighters earlier this month.

In the main event, Benson Henderson defeated Jorge Masvidal via split decision, in a technical and exciting affair. The bout was especially pivotal for Henderson, as prior to the fight he announced that he’d test the free market following the contest’s conclusion. This will give him a notable increase in bargaining power.

In the co-main event, Dong Hyun Kim (the more well-known of the Kims, as another fighter of the exact same name, also competed on the card) faced his replacement opponent for Masvidal, Dominic Waters.

Although Waters gave it everything he had in the contest, it simply wasn’t enough, as the elite Kim overwhelmed him for the first-round stoppage. Nevertheless, Waters certainly did the UFC a favor by stepping up and traveling halfway across the world to fight such a skilled competitor (seriously, this shouldn’t be undervalued), and will most certainly get another chance inside the Octagon.

This week brought some interesting announcement and solid fights—let’s hope that next week is even better!

30 Years with Windows: A Love Hate Long-term Relationship

0

30 years with windows 2015 microsoft tech imagesIt’s more like 20 for me actually, but I’m writing this to celebrate Windows’ 30th anniversary. While Apple and the Lisa introduced the world to the GUI, it was Microsoft Windows that helped the world embrace it. Windows 1.0 was first introduced in 1985 but never gained traction. It was a novelty at best and it would be 10 years before I could actually get to use Windows. It’s Windows’ 30th anniversary and I thought I’d write a short personal history of it. I’ve been using Windows since college starting with Windows 3.1, the same version that would propel Microsoft to become the world’s top software company. It was hard to think of 3.1 as a version number back then as for me it was more part of the name. Not many people actually thought of versions 1 and 2. I only got to try Windows 1.0 recently emulated on some website. Google it if you want a go.

Actually, my first experience with the graphical user interface was with DOS 5’s Dosshell. Back then I didn’t really know what it was but it was cool and it made DOS easy to use. I started using computers as an extra subject back in high school and got my own PC when I graduated to college. It was a PC-AT compatible with an AMD 286-compatible processor, a 40MB hard disk, the standard 640KB RAM complemented by an extra 1MB extended RAM on a card. Compared to my university’s computers, mine was fast. But by then PCs with the Intel 80386 processors were already out and so was Windows 3.1 which came out in 1990. I saw those in back issues of Byte and PC Magazine and was actually salivating to use Windows. I got a Windows PC on my 3rd year in college and it was cool. I loved to draw and write so I quickly maximized the use of Write and Paint for my studies and spent hours trying to beat Solitaire and Minesweeper in under 30 seconds. Those were the times. By my fourth year, Windows 95 was out and had the opportunity to use it through a pretty classmate who just bought her own PC, a 486-based computer with 4MB of RAM. I visited her often to use Windows 95 doing our thesis, among other reasons. It was my first taste of the Start Menu which organized the cluttered desktop of Windows 3.1. The interface was cleaner and more sophisticated. We developed our thesis using Foxpro for Windows which came out beautifully on Windows 95. As for Windows 3.11, otherwise known as Windows for Workgroups, I only got a glimpse of it running on our university’s file server but I saw a lot of it after graduation.

I had to endure the archaic style of Windows 3.11 when I started working as it was the company OS as we of course needed to be networked. My long stint with 3.1 meant that 3.11 was a breeze and my experience with GUI-based development during my college thesis made it easy for me to get hired. There were only three of us that year who developed Windows-based programs for our thesis. Eventually, we graduated to Windows 95. I did some small jobs before my second regular job and it was then that I appreciated Windows 95s new features such as USB support and Plug n Play after it had a major update prior to the release of Windows 98. We affectionately called it Windows 97.

My second regular job got me using Windows 98, which came out in, 1998. It was the same as Windows 95, except it was more integrated with the fledgling internet. Windows 98 also had better USB support though there were still a ton of non-USB devices going around. It also bundled Internet Explorer, which got Microsoft into a great deal of trouble. Bundling Internet Explorer resulted in antitrust cases as the company had an unfair advantage over the competition, particularly Netscape. Why buy a browser when it’s already on the operating system? Windows XP came out in 2001, and our company skipped Windows Me otherwise known as Windows Millennium Edition which was a disaster for Microsoft due to its high level of instability. I envied the company’s XP users as I was stuck on Windows 98 for a couple more years until we were sure our sensitive Payroll software would run on it without issues. Meanwhile, our company was using Windows NT as our server operating system and was off limits to us developer grunts. I read up on it even before graduating college. My first actual foray into server operating systems was when I had to set up Microsoft’s Sharepoint on a Windows 2003 server. Unfortunately, I never got to finish the project when I moved to a new consulting job but I got to use Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 a lot. Now Windows XP did prove to be a lot more stable as I kept crashing my Windows 98 PC in my last job. Thankfully fewer BSODs and a prettier interface. Now back then, Windows XP wasn’t the slow, bloated operating system it is now as it ran happily on a Pentium 3 IBM Thinkpad laptop with 256 MB of RAM. At the latest, it would crawl on a 1GHz Core2Duo with 1GB of RAM. Microsoft pulled the plug on XP last April 2014. I would use both Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 for years to come.

PDAs were the rage during my second job. It was the time of the Palm Pilots. Microsoft, of course, followed up with Pocket PC, which would later become Windows Mobile. Apart from my Handspring Treo 180, I got my hands on an HP Ipaq. Windows on such a small screen was awkward as well the memory management. I stuck with the Treo instead. The rise of Blackberry was writing on the wall for Palm and Windows Mobile.  The launch of the iPhone killed Windows Mobile. I still keep my Treo 680.

I’ve been reading up on the Windows XP follow-up Project Longhorn while in my third job. Microsoft, who has so far been following Moore’s law, came up with a follow-up version every two to three years has been late to follow up on Windows XP. At long last, Windows Vista came up but was a big disappointment. One, our company didn’t implement it as its hardware requirements were expensive at the time and two, its hard-to-deal-with UAC and lousy backward compatibility with older peripherals meant it was unsuited for our use. I skipped using Vista altogether and only encountered it on some laptops in my most recent job. Windows 7 came out in 2009 which was, as everybody says, what Vista should have been. I got to appreciate it fully in 2010 and still use it as the office operating system, only because it’s a requirement as most of our software runs smoothly on it.

When Windows 8 was announced in 2012, I was with it from the start. From the earliest developer’s preview until the final build. I replaced my Windows 7 laptop with my ASUS Vivobook, which initially ran Windows 8. Windows 8 was new, Windows 8 was fresh, you could say I’m one of the operating system’s very few fans. Windows 8 was a different beast which I considered a departure from all the icon grids I kept seeing on older Windows versions, Linux, iOS and Android screens. The interface was pulled from Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7. I was completely fine without the Start Menu as, under the hood, it felt fast and optimized. Compared to Windows 8, I felt like Windows 7 just crawled along. I’m a power user myself and like many had to get used to a new way of doing things. It was basically Microsoft’s attempt at bringing together desktop and tablet functionality in one package. The majority of users, of course, hated the change, and it seemed to have exacerbated Microsoft’s dilemma of being late in the mobile game. 2012 practically spelled the proverbial end of the world for Microsoft as the dominant authority on desktop operating systems. The PC is dead and all that. But honestly, I never liked Charms.

Never gave up on Windows 8 but I had to upgrade to Windows 8.1 when it came out on 2013 to keep up with the changes. Still no Start Menu though it calmed many people when the Start button came back along with a few other improvements. In fact, still using Windows 8.1 on my HP Stream 7 as I find 8.1 fast and perfect. My Vivobook has Windows 10. Like Windows 8, I followed Windows 10 closely as you could glean on previous articles. I’m currently time and strapped of bandwidth so I haven’t upgraded to the latest build which is 10586. Now Windows 10 brings back the Start Menu which I honestly feel is inferior to Windows 7. The addition of a dedicated search box on the task bar is a cool idea and Cortana for me, like iPhone’s Siri is a passing fling. Windows 10 unfortunately boots slower than Windows 8, or it could just be my old notebook. I also bought a powerful i7 Lenovo laptop for my boss loaded with Windows 10 but to be honest doesn’t feel as fast as it ought to be. Right now, I support a mix of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2008 systems.

I’ve dabbled with a few Linux distros, tried Android on a large HP Slate but still couldn’t recommend them for real work among my colleagues. I did install Linux on their old home computers and taught them a few moves and they tell me they still feel limited. Windows still rules on the workplace and in homes without Macs or iPads. My Windows 10 experience has so far been okay, but hopefully Microsoft could bring back that fast, optimized feel I got with Windows 8. Then Windows 10 would really be a blast. Microsoft seems to have gotten its act together with hits like the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book so if they want to stay where they are now, a few more improvements to Windows 10 are in order. No doubt there will be as Microsoft says that Windows 10 is the last Windows version. Updates and tweaks will come through Windows Update. The world has been with Windows for 30 years now while I’ve been with Windows for 20, and would probably be for several years more, that is, until Microsoft or someone else comes up with something comparatively better.
