Wow, this was one of those surprises for even the geekworld as it was announced that Rose Byrne who portrayed Moira MacTaggert in the first “X-Men” prequel “X-Men: First Class” is returning to take that role over again in a bigger plot scenario. If you recall, her role was rather small with the biggest part being her love interest with Professor X. Now that her mind’s been scrubbed clean, will she be able to rekindle this or not?
Rose Byrne is returning in the upcoming “X-Men: Apocalypse” film as Moira MacTaggert, Entertainment Weekly reported yesterday in an interview with writerSimon Kinberg. The characer was introduced in the 1960s-set film, “X-Men: First Class”, and it wasn’t a large role, but the role will be much bigger this time around.
Fans were disappointed that no mention of MacTaggert was made in the sequel to the prequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past” even though she and Professor Xavier shared an intimate kiss right before he erased her memory. We’re assuming the memory erase was contagious to everyone else in the cast. Plus all the characters were rather busy dealing with time travel and keeping the world from ending.
Now that “X-Men: Apocalypse” will be focusing on the “X-Men: First Class” characters, bringing MacTaggert back to the fold works great for the story.
“She’s a significant character in the movie,: Kinberg said. “We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them… It’s certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class, and would like to mine more in this one.”
Kinberg has previous said that Charles, Eric, Raven and Hank; the mutants we met in the first film will be completing the arc dealing with the first phase of their lives in the upcoming movie directed by Bryan Singer. It’s also been hinted that the film will deal head-on with the 1980’s, including music, clothing and best of all, that hair.
News of Byrne’s return comes just after the announcement that Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark on “Game of Thrones,” will take on the role of Jean Grey in the film. “X-Men: Apocalypse” director Bryan Singer tweeted the news on Jan. 22, also revealing that Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp will join as Cyclops and Storm, respectively.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” has a planned release date of May 27, 2017.
