2016 BAFTA Nominations show love for ‘Bridge of Spies’ & ‘Carol’

2016 BAFTA nominations show love for bridge of spies imagesThe 2016 BAFTA Award nominations just came out early Friday morning. Having moved their air date to Valentine’s Day, which is just two weeks before the Academy Awards, the BAFTA’s have become much more aligned with the Oscars and in predicting who will run that big race.

In not so surprising news, Eddie Redmayne, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Brie Larson, Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba were shortlisted in the acting categories, while Carol, Bridge of Spies and The Martian earned multiple nominations across categories.

In 2015, the BAFTA main category winners went on to win the Academy Aware in all but the best film and best director sections (the BAFTA went for Boyhood over Birdman in both), with Redmayne, Julianne Moore, J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette winning both.

Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star award in 2015, announced the nominees in a live video stream from BAFTA’s London headquarters on Friday morning. The awards ceremony itself will take place on Feb. 14, with Stephen Fry hosting.
