Ray Allen Considering NBA Comeback…Wait, No He’s Not…Okay, Let’s Call It a Maybe
We’re still stuck in that awkward period between NBA Free Agency and the start of the NFL season, but I’ll do my best to keep y’all entertained for the next few weeks.
For starters, there’s Ray Allen. The NBA all-time three point leader is 40 now, but he made it clear this past weekend that he is still a free agent:
“I haven’t said anything about that and I won’t officially retire,” said Allen. “Because if something came to the table, contractually and situationally, I want to be able to take a strong look at it. I don’t want to be that guy that says he’s retiring and then is coming back.”
It’s okay to drop names, Ray, we all know who ‘that guy’ is.
“I didn’t miss it,” continued Allen. “I realized how much time I missed not being home with my kids. I probably missed it in the Finals. Watching Cleveland and Golden State play, it just seemed like an epic battle that required a lot of precision on the floor and that’s when I felt, that was probably the only time that I felt like, ‘Man, I should have been out there.’”
So maybe he’s not considering a comeback? Make up your mind, Ray! Playing on a Championship team every season would be awesome, but that’s not an option.
“It would be one thing if I played 10 or 11 years, but playing 18, I got a lot out of it. I like the feeling of knowing I don’t have to beat myself into the ground.”
Okay, so in conclusion, Ray Allen is only somewhat interested in playing again under the conditions that the team that signs him pays well and makes it to the NBA Finals. I guess when you’re 40 and on route to the Hall of Fame you get to call the shots.
Then again, 40 is pretty old in the NBA. Maybe he’s just rambling. He probably complained about the darn kids always playing on his lawn later in the interview.
Either way, Allen’s trademark shooting isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Don’t be surprised if the San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, or even the Golden State Warriors start calling him come March and April.
