Quite contrary to last game week, Real Madrid dropped points while Barca pick up three points. Luis Enrique’s side lost Malaga at Camp Nou on February 21, while Carlo Ancelotti’s men won at Elche on February 23. All in all, Barca move two points closer to the league leaders in the La Liga standings.
Real Madrid played host to Villarreal on Sunday. Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty put them ahead but twelve minutes later, Gerardo Moreno equalized for Villarreal. Both the goals were scored in the second half and the final score at the Santiago Bernabeu ended 1 – 1 and then Carlo Ancelotti was booed after the substitution of Isco for Illarremendi. The European giants hadn’t lost any league game on home soil since suffering a defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid in September 2014.
After the match, Ancelotti hit back at the Real Madrid fans, who jeered him during the 1 – 1 draw at home.
The Italian said, “A coach is on the pitch and makes changes because he believes it’s best for the team. If the fans don’t understand it I am sorry but I made the decision and made the change to give the team more balance.”
He added: “In the first half, our rhythm was very low. We put in a lot of crosses because the ball circulation was slow.”
“The rhythm changed in the second half but we weren’t efficient with the chances we created.
“We didn’t have good fortune with our efforts on goal. We had 24 shots and only seven were on target.”
Barcelona got an away victory at the weekend against Granada on Saturday. Ivan Rakitic scored in the 25th minute and Suarez added the second only three minutes after the commencement of the second half. A Lionel Messi goal is almost inevitable whenever Barcelona win. He scored in the 70th minute to record a comfortable 1 – 3 win. Barca had 16 shots out of which 9 were on target, whereas Granada had a total of 10 shots out of which 4 were on target.
Alike their city rivals, Atletico Madrid were also involved in a stalemate at the weekend. Diego Simeone’s team were held in a goalless draw by the fifth placed Sevilla. The match referee booked 11 players, one more than half of the total outfield players. Sevilla’s loss was yet again Valencia’s gain. Piatti scored both the goals at the Mestalla Stadium on Sunday to grab all three points against David Moyes’s Real Sociedad. Nuno’s team, 4th on the La Liga table, now have a seven point advantage over Sevilla. After picking up their 16th win of the season, Valencia are now only a point behind the reigning La Liga champions, Atletico Madrid.
