The past week has produced some prime time action around the American League starting with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays entered the week on a hot streak winning five straight games to close out the previous week before picking up three games sweeps over the Miami Marlins and Boston Red Sox this past week.
As you start to look at this club you can see a variety of stars producing each week as Jose Bautista put up some big numbers last week while Josh Donaldson put up some big numbers a few weeks back. This past week some of the big time production was coming from catcher Russell Martin.
Martin appeared in five of the six ball games picking up at least one hit in each of those contest. Overall the Blue Jays catcher went nine for 21 with nine runs scored, one double, one triple, two home runs and eight runs batted in. This type of production helped the Blue Jays to win eleven straight games and make a move in the American League East.
Winners:
Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles whirlwind season continues to ride along like a ride at an amusement park. This week that ride was at a season high as the team managed to put together a six game winning streak including five games to start the week including a sweep of the Boston Red Sox before winning the first of three against the New York Yankees. The move helped the Orioles out of last place in the American League East a spot that is currently held by the Red Sox.
Manny Machado, Baltimore Orioles: As we have seen over the past week the teams that land on the winners list are typically carried by a few players putting up some big numbers. That was the case by the Orioles third baseman who picked up 11 hits over the teams six games with one double, two home runs and five runs batted in. The Orioles leadoff man found a way to get on base as he finished with nine runs scored in that stretch as well.
Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers: The Tigers first baseman is putting together another solid season in 2015. Over the past week, Cabrera picked up hits in four of the five games he appeared on the field including two games with three hits. In that stretch, the former American League MVP picked up one double, two home runs, seven runs batted in and five runs scored.
Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays join the Baltimore Orioles on the list of teams deserving of a spot on the winners list after winning four of six games last week. In that stretch the team managed to hold opposing teams to under four runs in three of those games. Now the question for the Rays is despite winning a bunch of games early how will the team continue to put up runs to help one of the games pitching staffs win ball games?
Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox: The White Sox ace went 1-1 last week to move his record to 6-3 on the season while lowering his earned run average to 3.01 for the year. In game one last week, Sale went eight innings allowing just one run while striking out 14 Houston Astros hitters. Sale bounced back on Sunday to allow two earned runs in six and two thirds of a inning while striking out 12 Rays hitters. The end result despite allowing just three earned runs over 14.2 innings was just a 1-1 record.
Losers:
Boston Red Sox: While the Orioles, Rays and Blue Jays represented the American League East in a good way, the Red Sox manage to make the losers list this week. The ball club managed to get swept by the Baltimore Orioles to open up the week at Camden Yards before returning home to Fenway Park to lose three straight to the Blue Jays. The recent struggles have put the ball club five games behind the fourth place Orioles.
Omar Infante, Kansas City Royals: Infante lands on this list for two reasons one is his play on the field and one is for him actually hold a starting spot for second base in the American League. Last week the Royals infielder managed to pick up just one 19 at bats while seeing his batting average lower to .204 for the season.
Chicago White Sox: Seems like just a few weeks back the White Sox were making a run to get back into the race in the American League Central division. That wasn’t the case last week as the team managed to start off hot sweeping the Astros but traveled to Tampa where the Rays would pick up the three game sweep.
Shane Greene, Detroit Tigers: The struggles have continued for the Tigers starter as he has seen his earned run average climb to 5.82 for the season. This comes after another four plus run performance marking his fourth straight game with at least four earned runs. The final stat sheet showed Greene pitching three innings while allowing five earned runs over that stretch.
Matt Barnes, Boston Red Sox: Barnes is just one part of the struggles in Boston that includes seeing former All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia miss play to balls in the sun over the weekend. The Red Sox reliever struggled allowing five earned runs in three appearances including three on Friday without retiring on Blue Jay hitter.
