Gareth Thomas & James Haskell Open the Closet On Professional Sports

Gareth Thomas has always been pretty outspoken on being himself both on and off the rugby field which is slowly becoming more common here in the U.S. Still, people here like to view their men in tight padded pants as high testosterone breeding machines, but thankfully, the courage of a few men coming out of the closet in the NFL (Michael Sam), NBA (Jason Collins) and a small handful of others will slowly turn the tide for people to realize that it’s not about what you do off the field, but what you do for your team and fans on it. That’s where it really counts.

The timing couldn’t be better for rugby stars Gareth Thomas and James Haskell to talk about closeted gays in the professional sports world after the recent Kordell Stewart‘s continual attempts to prove that he is straight. The first openly gay international rugby player, Gareth Thomas, joins current England international James Haskell in claiming many professionals in the sport hide their homosexuality, as they discuss work commencing on the Hollywood biopic on the Wales rugby legend’s life story.

Speaking on Sportlobster TV, Thomas, who won 100 caps for his country before taking part in Big Brother, confirmed pre-production has now begun on the movie and Oscar-nominated Mickey Rourke, who owns the rights to the film, will definitely play his part.

gareth thomas shirtless bulge gay rugby players movie 2014

The majority of filming is set to take place in Wales, South Africa and France with rugby scenes being filmed separately to ensure they look convincing and Ellis Park in Johannesburg has been mooted as one of the main locations.

Thomas said:“Mickey has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the film and they are now starting pre-production. It’s been a crazy experience getting to know the Hollywood people and Mickey has had a lot of stick for his image in the past, but he’s been training really hard to play this role. He is the right person to play me as I wanted someone who cares about who I am, not someone who just wants to win an award.

“The rugby scenes are going to be filmed separately as most sport films are let down in the actual playing scenes. Invictus is a good example as it was terrible due to the fact the rugby wasn’t convincing so we’re going to be careful to get the action right.

“Filming this movie isn’t about the money – it is about acceptance in sport for everyone. The fact is that coming out that I was gay in a rugby environment meant I soon realised some people have a real problem. People take courage from my story in all walks of life and this is what is important. For me it’s just another medium for people to take inspiration from and that’s what is important to me.

“I’m not the only sports person to face issues – I met Martina Navratilova once and she said when she played at Wimbledon early in her career, just after she had publicly come out and many in the crowd actually sat on their hands when she came on court. However, she overcame these perceptions and became one of the most popular and successful players of all time, which is a powerful story I would like to see on film.”

When asked what his thoughts were on the questions raised about upcoming sporting events planned for countries where there are laws in place against homosexuality, such as the 2014 Russian Winter Olympics and 2022 Qatar World Cup, Thomas gave strong views: “If I was part of a squad going to these countries – I would go there as a gay man and be the best at what I was doing and prove that their laws can not stop me at being the best I can be in my sport. Athletes can’t have the power to make decisions as to whether to compete in countries where they tolerate homosexuality. They often only have one chance to be the best and they have worked so hard to get there that nothing should hold them back.

England and Wasps flanker, Haskell, supports these views and claims many rugby players are hiding their sexuality due to perceived stigma: “Statistically there must be gay rugby players out there but I don’t know of a single one. I feel bad anyone struggles to be true to who they are, as no one should have to live a lie.

“With Gareth – being gay was just a side story, as he was just a brilliant rugby player first and foremost. I don’t think most in rugby could care less whether a teammate was gay – but there are definitely boundaries where some who you call friends and teammates may look at you a different way if you come out. The fact a rugby player may say they prefer men to women does not mean it should have any relevance in sport. Certainly in rugby it is becoming more acceptable but, regardless of what people may say, there will always be preconceptions and stereotypes in the sport.”

Gareth Thomas announced he is gay in 2009, becoming one of the first openly homosexual male athletes in any major sports team in the world. That year Gareth was also voted the most influential gay person in the UK by topping the Pink List. Sportlobster TV is an online forum where fans can watch their sporting heroes discuss the topics they set at the sport social network.

Best Celebrity Gossip Stories Of 2014

Celebrity gossip can be really intriguing, juicy, fascinating or even heartwarming depending on the nature of the gossip. In 2014 there have been some truly great gossip stories that remind us all that not everything in the world is negative.

patrick stewart ian mckellen help man propost marriage to boyfriend 2014

One of those rare heartwarming gossip stories involves a die -hard Star Trek fan’s proposal. A man head over heels in love with his boyfriend wanted to get Patrick Stewart, his boyfriend’s favorite Star Trek actor, to help him with the proposal. Sadly Patrick Stewart wasn’t available the day the proposal was set to happen. So instead he did the couple a favor and sent his good friend Ian McKellen to take his place. The proposal was filmed, as the man who was proposing makes documentaries for a living, with Ian McKellen breaking it to the man’s boyfriend that as much as the boyfriend was in love with Patrick Stewart, Stewart was already happily married. Ian McKellen then told the boyfriend that his partner was available and he should do the right thing and marry him. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime celebrity gossip stories that most wouldn’t expect to be true.

thalias hoax instagram gossip images 2014

While some celebrities end up becoming jaded as a result of their fame, others remain regular people in certain ways. One example of this is Thalia, a Mexican singer and actress who recently posted pictures on her Instagram account implying that she had her ribs removed so she would appear thinner. Thalia had posted a picture of a jar with ribs in it, saying they were her removed ribs. She later posted that she was kidding and that the ribs in the picture were, in fact, not hers. It is refreshing to see a celebrity that can joke around with their friends and play pranks just as regular people would. It serves as a reminder at the end of the day that even celebrities put their pants on one leg at a time.

ashton kutcher mila kunis 2014 long time romance images

One heartwarming piece of gossip for 2014 is the budding romance of former That 70’s Show co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. The couple found their way to real life romance years after playing boyfriend and girlfriend on the long running comedy. Now that they are expecting a baby together each is making the sacrifice of selling the home they lived in when they were single and buying a home where they can raise their as of yet unborn daughter and be a family. This is a breath of fresh air because so many celebrity couples stubbornly hold onto their bachelor/bachelorette pads that it is good to see these two happy and in love.

francis bean cobain reaches out to robin williams daughter zelda after suicide 2014

The heartwarming gossip continues with the announcement that Frances Bean Cobain, now the grown daughter of the late Kurt Cobain, is offering her sympathies to Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams. The two young women are friends in real life and Cobain sent Williams a tweet stating that she would be there for Zelda during this difficult time in her life. With so many petty celebrity feuds between women in Hollywood it is great to see Cobain show compassion for Williams, as she can relate to the loss of her friend’s father. Williams and Cobain now both have fathers who committed suicide.

ciara with baby after leaving man images 2014

Divorce is never a pretty thing and is this even truer when it happens among celebrities because they have an outlet to turn any divorce into a nasty headline grabbing event. That’s why when celebrity couples break up, whether they were married or not, it is always a breath of fresh air when at least one of them is doing better after the breakup than they did before. One great example of this is Ciara, a singer who recently broke up with her fiancé after finding out he was cheating on her. Despite the fact that the two just has a baby, Ciara is reportedly thriving as a single lady. Though she reported being devastated upon learning she had been cheated on by her fiancé and baby’s father, three months later she is loving life, enjoying raising her daughter and making music to entertain others with. Where many celebrities would be falling apart at this point, it is inspiring to see Ciara bounce back from a devastating heartbreak and embracing life as she so clearly is.

brooks wheelan fired from saturday night live images 2014

In another example of a celebrity who has suffered a loss but is still going strong is Brooks Wheelan. The Saturday Night Live actor has stated that he is not surprised he was fired from the show after one season and that when he was cast on the show he figured he would be fired sooner rather than later. Wheelan has a good enough sense of humor to be able to laugh about the fact that he got fired and that is refreshing in a world where many celebrities are known to throw hissy fits like children if they dare get fired. This proves that show biz doesn’t have to force a person to stop being down to earth.

jennifer aniston justin theroux split wedding images 2014

It is always good to see when a celebrity can bounce back from a series of setbacks in their life. One celebrity that has done this beautifully is Jennifer Aniston. After Friends skyrocketed her into worldwide fame she had a whirlwind marriage to Brad Pitt that ended very badly and resulted in a very nasty and hurtful divorce. For years afterwards, Jennifer Aniston continued to have bad luck when it came to romantic relationships. Yet she has finally overcome those obstacles and is now happily vacationing in Tahiti with her fiancé Justin Theroux. The trip was a combination celebration for her fiance’s birthday and the anniversary of them getting engaged. Though the couple has had a two year engagement already, they are no outward signs that they are postponing nuptials for any reason.

These are among the best celebrity gossip stories of 2014 to date. Each of them is a reminder that Hollywood isn’t always a bad place.

Biggest Celebrity Marriage Downfalls Of 2014

1

There has been a lot of scandal surrounding the many celebrity marriage and divorces in 2014. While many Hollywood couples happily hooked up, others sadly ended their marriage. Some of this year’s hottest gossip surrounds the trials and tribulations of celebrities in and out of love.

The latest gossip is centered on the rumored imminent breakup of Kendra Wilkinson’s marriage to Hank Baskett. Rumors are that Wilkinson has already spoken with divorce lawyers on multiple occasions, addressing everything from child custody to finances.

kendra wilkinson hank baskett breaking up rumors 2014

Like many ill-fated celebrity couples, Wilkinson and Baskett have been allowing their life as a married couple to be filmed for a reality show. However, those in the know reports that once the cameras stop working Wilkinson keeps her distance from Baskett. Rumors are swirling that the reason the couple is headed towards divorce is that while Wilkinson was pregnant Baskett was caught cheating on her with not only a model, but a transgendered model at that.

Even the couple’s two young children, four year old Hank and 12 month old Alijah Mary, can already tell that there is tension between their parents. This says a lot about how tense the household must be when innocent babies can sense that something is not right between mom and dad. Whatever mom and dad are dealing with, they are clearly not competent enough to deal with it away from their kids.

katharine mcphee nick cokas breakup 2014 gossip

Another celebrity marriage that hit the rock in 2014 was Katharine McPhee’s divorce from Nick Cokas. The couple had already been legally separated for a year when the divorce papers were filed due to the fact Seven months prior to the divorce papers being filed McPhee had been photographed in a compromising position with the director of her now defunct TV show Smash. McPhee had allegedly been mortified when she was caught on camera, though clearly not mortified enough to try and rectify her actions. Though it is rumored that she attempted to patch things up with Cokas they were never able to reconcile.

sherri shepherd lamar sally celebrity divorces 2014 images

Around the same time the McPhee/Cokas marriage was falling apart so was The View co-host Sheri Shepherd’s marriage to Lamar Sally. He reportedly filed for a separation, which caused her to file for custody of the baby that the couple’s surrogate recently gave birth to. Shepherd reportedly had no idea that her husband had any plans to file for a legal separation. It remains to be seen if the couple will be able or willing to patch things up. This was one divorce that was easy to see from miles and miles away.

I’ve never been a fan of Shepherd as she regularly pulls out her Bible when he rational mind can’t find a logical explanation for things like accepting gay marriage. She loves saying how much she loves her gay friends, but then smacks them down feeling they are beneath her in being able to get married. On The View she loved talking about her man for a couple years, then she began talking about her ‘sinning’ mind while making sure to say that her man would catch hell and brimstone if he even thought like that about another woman. It’s been a rather heated divorce, but the biggest problem has been that soon to be ex Lamar thinks that his wife is a bigger celebrity than she really is. Just wait to hear that silence now that her time on The View is over thankfully!

johnny weir victor voronov celebrity divorce gossip 2014 with beaten puppy

Earlier in the year figure skating star Johnny Weir announced he was seeking a divorce from Victor Voronov. Weir reportedly told Access Hollywood reporter Billy Bush that throughout his marriage to Voronov he felt like he was being isolated from the outside world. Voronov was said to have been shocked when his husband filed for divorce. As a result, Voronov has made outrageous claims about Weir as well. When Voronov officially responded to his husband’s request for a divorce he publicly stated that he had been cheated on and abused by Weir. Voronov claimed that Weir pressured him to come out of the closet when he didn’t want to. Weir allegedly announced on a TV show that Voronv was his gay lover, though this went against Voronov’s wishes. He also reportedly would not allow Voronov to take any interest in anything Weir himself had no interest in. This divorce has gone down as one of the messiest celebrity divorces of 2014. Then there were all those hitting the dog claims too!

pamela anderson divorces rick salomon again 2014 celebrity gossip

Former Playboy model Pamela Anderson has reportedly divorced husband Rick Salomon for the second time. Anderson and Salomon were first married in 2007 and divorced in 2008. Between their first and second marriage they reportedly stayed friends, though this apparently didn’t stop them from jumping into the sack together anyway. This time around the divorce between the two was reportedly still amicable. This is perhaps one of the most unusual celebrity marriage and divorce situations of 2014.

hilary duff mike comrie divorce celebrity gossip images 2014

One of the first celebrity couples to announce their divorce in early 2014 was Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie. They were rumored to be having problems in their marriage long before the divorce announcement came. While some blame this on the couple getting married at a young age others blame it on the fact that there were accusations of cheating during the marriage. In the fall of 2013 the couple reportedly underwent marriage counseling in a last ditch effort to kiss and make up. Comrie is doing everything possible to keep the marriage together, but it looks like Hilary has made up her mind.

david letterman regina lasko celebrity divorces 2014 images

David Letterman’s infamous cheating has reportedly nailed the final straw in the coffin that is his marriage. Ever since Letterman was involved in a 2009 sex scandal that later came out in the media he and wife Regina Lasko have been having problems in their marriage. As of May of 2014 the couple was rumored to not even be living together anymore. There is speculation that the couple will not officially divorce until after David Letterman retires from his late night talk show sometime in 2015. Lasko is reportedly holding off on the divorce to prevent Letterman from having to endure another scandal during his show’s run. Some believe that the entire reason Letterman is retiring is so that he can spend more time with his family and try to patch up his marriage to Lasko.

nicole kidman keith urban celebrity divorce rumors images 2014

As of June 2014 there have been rumors circulating that the marriage between Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban is coming to an end. Some of the tension between the two reportedly comes from the fact that Urban lives part time in Australia and part time in L.A. Source close to the couple claim Kidman feels like a single mom as a result. There are also rumors that Kidman has jealousy issues and that is the main thing destroying their marriage. Only time will tell if this divorce becomes a reality or not.

2014 has been a very tumultuous year for celebrity couples so far. There have been many shakeups of long time couples and several newer couples that are parting ways.

2014’s Most Underrated NFL Football Players

There are 32 NFL teams with 53 men on each roster. Each team has specific coaches for each position not too mention the head guy and the coordinators. With all these players, there are bound to be some that just do not get the playing time or the media attention that they deserve. So these underrated NFL guys are simply overlooked.

Even with all the talent evaluators and the coaches available, they are still going to occasionally overlook a future star in the making. And there are some players that play well on a consistent basis that get praised, but still do not receive the attention that they deserve. While other players on the same level get their name mentioned on SportsCenter and the like, over and over.

There are a few reasons for an NFLer to be underrated. Playing on a bad team or a small market franchise doesn’t allow for the national exposure that some players get. Play on the Cowboys and you are hard to overlook, for better or worse. Start for the Jaguars or Bills and your success or failures won’t make it to the limelight most likely.

Also a player can hype himself up into a better player than he is in reality. Being good with interviews and tooting your own horn will get you some attention. It is bad, but sometimes it is necessary to let people know how good you are if they are not noticing. A shy player will not be at the forefront of the NFL commentators’ minds, so they may get mentioned less often than a boisterous guy like Richard Sherman. Unless a player is at the level of a Barry Sanders, who was notoriously opposed to turning the spotlight on himself, they are easy to ignore. Sanders did not need to come up with a TD celebration dance since he knew he would be returning to the end zone frequently. Not many guys are at that level obviously.

earl thomas nfl underrated bulge football players 2014

So who are some of the most underrated players going into 2014? I’ll start with Earl Thomas of the Seahawks. This free safety makes it possible for his teammate, Richard Sherman, to do what he does. Thomas is an ultra competitive guy by nature and he does not miss games. He covers his area of the field and simply makes big plays. He had five interceptions as a rookie and matched that number last year. Mix in 105 tackles and you have a play maker that keeps offensive coordinators up at night popping Rolaids with a bottle of Jack on their desk.

roddy white nfl most underrated bulge football players 2014

Roddy White of the Atlanta Falcons is an underrated receiver who is a pro’s pro. While the media focuses on players like Megatron and Larry Fitzgerald, White has been playing close to their level for years. Fitz and Calvin Johnson deserve all the accolades they receive, but Roddy White needs to be put in their category. The Falcons receiver does get some press, but is often even overshadowed by teammate Julio Jones. Jones is going to be great and is spectacular right now to watch. But he is not what White is to his team yet. If the Falcons can right their ship this year and get back to the playoffs or possibly the Super Bowl, hopefully Roddy White will receive his just due. Being on HBO’s Hard Knocks should help as well.

frank gore nfl underrated bulge football players 2014

Unless you follow the San Francisco 49ers on a weekly basis, you might not realize what Frank Gore has meant to that franchise. As a bruising running back for the Niners, Gore has been a rock for them since 2005. To be as physical as he is, it is hard to believe he has been this productive. He doesn’t tear off 80 yard runs like Adrian Peterson, but he does give his team over 1,000 yards almost every single year. The guys in his own locker room know his value I am certain, even if his lack of flashiness keeps him out of the mainstream spotlight. As a running back, his shelf life should be coming to an end. But until some rookie unseats him as the starter, I won’t believe it until I see it.

alex smith 49ers most underrated bulge football players 2014

I hate to use the word ‘game manager’ for an NFL quarterback, but that is about what Alex Smith is to his team. Smith was the man in San Francisco at one point and had them on the verge of a Super Bowl three years ago when some fumbled punts cost them a big game trip. He lost his job to the more athletic Colin Kaepernick, and is now in Kansas City. He led the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2013. If the Chiefs just get better around their new quarterback, he can lead them where that need to go. He is good enough to do it, but he does need the team around him to improve. His stats do not wow people so he gets ignored. But I will take a consistent guy like Smith over an athletic QB who does not know when to throw a ball away or run out of bounds.

anquan boldin nfl underrated nfl bulge players 2014

If there is a more dedicated NFL football player than Anquan Boldin, please point him out to me. This man, with a capital MAN, is still making big time catches even at 33 years old. He had 85 catches, seven touchdowns, and almost 1,200 receiving yards in 2013. Experts do note how consistent he is when covering his games, but he does not get the credit he deserves. He is tough as nails, as he showed when he came back so quickly after breaking his face in 2008. He is the ultimate team player as well. At Florida St., he switched his position to quarterback for the 2003 Sugar Bowl when the starter was ruled ineligible. Over Boldin’s 11 years in the NFL, no team could have asked for a better receiver. Salary cap issues have caused him to move to three different teams, and that may have cost him some glory. But if I were needing one catch for a first down to ice a game, there are not many guys I would call out to do it, but Anquan Boldin would be my sure bet.

NFL Pre-Season Week 1 Overview

With week two of the NFL preseason starting tonight on the NFL Network, we can now take a look back at week one. It is not the regular season yet so I don’t want to get carried away, but there are some things that were worthy of noting.

Let me start with Johnny Football. Manziel did get plenty of playing time in his first NFL outing. The kid completed seven out of eleven passes, which is good, but it was against preseason players of course. His running was fun to watch but kind of concerning. He is not afraid to stick his head into the defenders, which will eventually cost him dearly. Concussions are no fun obviously, and now lead to multiple games missed. Also, he had a nice run for a first down, but the most glaring part of that run was the fact that he could have tossed the ball to the full back for an easier play. He depends on his running so much that he is going to make it hard on himself I am afraid. It is a challenge for athletic guys like Manziel to trust their passing ability when the option to run is so handy.

Detroit’s Nick Fairley, one of the dirtiest college players of the past ten years, is not impressing his coaches. Fairley, who should be tearing up the league along with Ndamukong Suh, seems to be just coasting along in his NFL career. He has had weight troubles but did trim down before camp. But now he is ballooning back up to ice cream lover level. It is not hard to get booted out of the NFL when you do not perform at the level you are being paid. The former Auburn defensive terror is about to find that out the hard way.

In some Cowboy news, it is apparent that some fans are absolutely incapable of acting civilized. Raider fan is more than happy to remind us of that when we start to forget. Some genius fan decided to get into the fray that started up between a couple of Cowboys and Raiders players. The fan swung a helmet at Dallas cornerback B.W. Webb, who of course retaliated until being pulled back. Hopefully the moron in the stands will have his tickets to any meaningful games revoked. Better yet, I wish he had gotten onto the field and received a proper punch to the face. It is easy to take a swing from the peanut gallery. Much different to walk up to a pro football player and take a swing at him man to man.

Week two of the preseason offers some interesting matchups. The Falcons will travel to Texas to face Houston. The best parts of that game will make it to HBO’s Hard Knocks. The Patriots will play the Eagles. Also the Broncos and 49ers will face off on Sunday. The Monday night game will have more Johnny Football as the Browns go head to head with Washington.

If you don’t have time to catch all the preseason action, there are ways to get caught up. NFL.com has game rewind available for a fee. You can see all the games in 2014 plus archived film back to 2009. Games are also available in the condensed format as well as the coach’s film. NFL radio is also an option if listening while you work is your thing. Be careful with the NFL Mobile app from Verizon. Once you download it, you are automatically subscribed to a monthly fee on your phone bill.

Most Overrated NBA Players – 2014/2015 Season

1

The NBA is full of big names; however, sometimes players can become well known without actually being that good. These overrated players tend to make a lot of money even though no one can really explain why. Here’s a list of the most overrated players in the NBA for this coming season:

deron williams overrated nba bulge basketball players 2014

Deron Williams:

Williams averaged only 14.3 points per game and 6.1 assists per game this season with the Brooklyn Nets. These numbers would be great for a point guard coming off the bench, but Williams is a starter and making almost $20 million a season. The Nets would be better off trading him, but Williams’s huge contract and sad performance makes him very unattractive to potential teams.

chandler parsons overrated gay bulge nba basketball players 2014

Chandler Parsons:

For a small forward making about $14 million a season, 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game just does not cut it. Parsons simply does not produce well enough to earn the money he is making. There is a reason the Houston Rockets got rid of him this season despite having the cap room to be able to keep him.

josh smith overrated nba bulge basketball players 2014

Josh Smith:

Smith has been in the NBA for 10 seasons, yet his style of play has not improved at all. Smith shoots less than 30 percent from beyond the arc and less than 55 percent from the free throw line. That’s right—Smith makes over $13 million a season and he can barely hit a free throw.

dwight howard overrated nba bulge basketball players 2014

Dwight Howard:

Howard puts up great numbers pretty consistently with the Houston Rockets, but what he lacks is leadership. Howard does not seem to have the passion and drive to lead a team to a championship. Until he gets an attitude adjustment, Howard will never be a legend.

tony allen overrated nba bulge basketball players 2014

Tony Allen:

Allen may be one of the best defenders in the NBA, but he simply cannot play offense. He is a big reason for the Memphis Grizzles offensive struggles this past season. Allen averaged only 9 points per game this past season while making less than 25 percent of his three point shots and only 62.8 percent of his free throws.

oj mayo overrated nba bulge basketball players 2014

O.J. Mayo:

Mayo brought nothing but confrontations with the head coach and sub-par effort to the Milwaukee Bucks this season. Mayo averaged under 12 points a game and clearly was unhappy with his new team. Hopefully a new coach and the addition of Jabari Parker will encourage Mayo to try a little harder this season.

carmelo anthony overrated nba bulge basketball players 2014

Carmelo Anthony:

Anthony is without a doubt a very exciting player to watch, and the fans in New York will surely continue to fill the stands to see him play. However, Anthony is about to make $22 million this coming season; and he has a hard time leading his team to the playoffs. Anthony puts up large numbers, but until he steps up as a leader on the Knicks the team will continue to lose.

Most Underrated NBA Players – 2014/2015 Season

0

Every basketball fan knows who LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are, but many less dedicated fans probably would not recognize a smaller name player such as Jeff Teague. Many of these players hold their teams together; however, they seem to go unnoticed to the average basketball fan. Here’s a list of the most underrated, unappreciated players in the NBA for this coming season:

mirza teletovic underrated bulge nba basketball player 2014 images

Mirza Teletovic:

At Brooklyn Nets games, Teletovic lighting up the court with his spot on shooting is a common sight; however, unless you are a big Nets fan you have probably never heard of him. Teletovic is a matchup problem for defenders because he can knock down shots from basically anywhere on the court—especially from behind the ark.

anderson varejao underrated bulge nba basketball players 2014 iamges

Anderson Varejão:

Varajeo is a fan favorite in Cleveland—he is an exciting player to watch, a terrific offensive and defensive rebounder, and a top-notch rim protector. He is an all-around team player and one of LeBron’s favorite teammates.

Luis Scola underrated bulge basketball nba 2014 images

Luis Scola:

Scola has played for three teams and seems to fly under the radar on each one. His overall numbers have dropped slightly with the Indiana Pacers since he does not get the ball as much, but he is still a terrific inside shooter and team player.

larry sanders underrated nba bulge basketball 2014 images

Larry Sanders:

Sanders is arguably the best shot blocker in the NBA, and his injury problems this past season were a big part of Milwaukee’s horrible record. With Sanders healthy and Jabari Parker joining the squad, the Bucks should see some decent improvements this season.

omer asik most underrated bulge nba basketall 2014 images

Omer Asik:

The New Orleans Pelicans acquired the big man from the Houston Rockets this offseason, and he should prove to be a great addition to the team. Asik’s offensive struggles have improved greatly as his career progresses, and he has always been a great defender in the NBA. Now that he will be playing alongside Anthony Davis his talent may start to be recognized.

nick collison most underrated nba bulge basketball 2014 images

Nick Collison:

Anyone that watches the Oklahoma City Thunder regularly could tell you that Collison is one of the hardest workers in the NBA. Although he does not score much, Collison hustles on every play and is one of the better defenders in the league. The Thunder can always count on him for an energy boost late in the game.

chris bosh underrated nba bulge basketball 2014 images

Chris Bosh:

Bosh may have been part of Miami’s “Big 3”; however, he was always the least respected of the three guys. With LeBron leaving the Heat, Bosh will be the go to guy in Miami this season; so he will be putting up the kind of numbers he used to with the Toronto Raptors and hopefully earn the respect he deserves as a super star in the NBA.

NFL’s New Look With Thursday Night Football On CBS

Thankfully the pitiful offerings of summertime TV are almost over with the NFL revving up. If not for HBO, I would not turn the TV on in the summer. All we have for now is preseason football, which is not great, but it does look and smell like the real thing. We have just a few weeks until regular season NFL action gets rolling once again.

This year we will get some more games via the new Thursday Night Football deal with the NFL Network and CBS. The actual game production will be handled by CBS, with Jim Nantz and the ever pompous Phil Simms calling the action. The NFL Network team will handle the pre-game, halftime, and post-game coverage. Even though I am not a Simms fan, CBS’s in game work should be better than the NFL Network’s has been. But I am really happy to have the Network doing the commentary before games, between halves, and after the contests. I am more partial to those guys than the CBS in-studio fellas. I like James Brown, and that is the only nice thing I have to say about their NFL Today crew. Although they did add the charismatic Tony Gonzalez to the mix since he retired from the game.

The problem in the past with the NFL Network airing the live games on Thursdays was the fact that so few homes have the channel in their lineup. More and more people are getting on board but it is an extra cost for folks on their cable bill. This made ratings for Thursday Night Football some of the worst among any games in the NFL’s line up. The lackluster matchups also had something to do with that fact.

Teaming up with CBS will give a big boost to the TV ratings. Even people with no cable or satellite service can watch these games with a regular antenna. And yes, there are still a big number of Americans without cable service of any kind, believe it or not. This was a legitimate concern for Monday Night Football when it went to ESPN a few years ago. The more people that have access to your product, the better business will be, obviously. CBS broadens the scope of the NFL Network’s offerings for the first seven games at least. The next seven will only be available on the NFL Network. But then CBS jumps back in the mix with a Saturday doubleheader in late December.

Thursday Night Football will continue to gain momentum over the next few years. We Americans love us some NFL and the league is determined to grow by any means necessary. A big key to success is the face of the Network, Rich Eisen. The former SportsCenter anchor was the right guy for the big chair when Roger Goodell hired him. Eisen is likable, able to manage a bunch of big personalities on set, and he is damn good at his job. He does a free podcast as well that is very entertaining and insightful.

I also enjoy the work of most of Eisen’s cohorts on set. Michael Irvin, whom I hated as a player but love as a media personality, is as real as they come. Steve Mariucci is good, but I could do without Deion Sanders, who has always appeared phony to me. Marshall Faulk and Kurt Warner also are knowledgeable former players who bring credibility to the Network’s coverage.

Now that Thursday Night Football has a major network in CBS to work with, it is here to stay. Being the only pro game on TV on a particular night certainly helps, although it is not the ‘event’ that Monday Night Football was back in the day. People have plenty of media options now. DVRs let us watch games we were too busy to catch on Sundays, there are a million channels, and the internet / mobile phones occupy much of our attention. As the game matchups get better each year, so will the ratings. More people will end up subscribing to the NFL Network to see the games not being simulcast by CBS. That was a smart move by the NFL to keep the last half of the season for themselves.

Eventually Thursday Night Football will not need a simulcast. Hopefully the day will come when we can cut the cord to cable and satellite completely. Being able to pick and choose what we want to watch via the internet without a cable subscription would be nice. There are options to watch online now, but some things are available only if you are subscribed to a cable or satellite service.

Will Thursday night be the last frontier of the NFL’s offerings? Not likely, but at some point there will be over saturation. I know that is difficult to fathom….hard for me to believe that I just typed it!

There has to be a point when people don’t need any extra NFL action. I do not know at what point that is, but it will be reached. Nothing can grow forever. They have a 24 hour network to cover every possible tidbit of news and opinion. Sundays are full of national games available to everyone. ‘NFL Sunday Ticket’ offers every game played for fee. And as if all that were not enough, you can see all the scoring you can stomach with ‘NFL Red Zone‘.

The NFL is king and will stay on top most likely forever. No sport comes close to their TV ratings. No, not even college football. I am looking forward to the new look Thursday night lineup of games. I am nowhere near my saturation point for the NFL. I may be too old / busy to stay up for some late night finishes, but I know how to use a DVR or catch the highlights later. Gone are the days as a kid, when I had only a couple games available on Sunday and a Monday night game. I can now binge watch the NFL anytime I get ready. Count me as ready.

Kristen Stewart Shows Some Intensity In New CAMP X-RAY Trailer

Yes, everyone’s had something critical to say about Kristen Stewart over the past few years, but it looks like she’s trying to dispel some myths in her latest film ‘Camp X-Ray‘; mainly that she can act after all. We’ve all had plenty to say about her performance in ‘The Twilight Movie’ franchise, not to mention the sadly forgettable ‘On the Road.’

Peter Sattler’s ‘Camp X-Ray’ hit the Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews, but Stewart was able to use the platform as a sort of acting rebirth. Her latest role gives her a chance to show that she can play tough as nails gritty women. Obviously this choice worked as Variety compared her to Jodie Fosters star turn role in ‘The Silence Of the Lambs’.

Here’s a full description of the film to give you a better idea of this one. It probably will only be released in select cities, but you can be sure the studio (IFC Films) will push Stewart for awards season as this is the type of role that gets them. At least this time around, no one will have to worry about Robert Pattinson taking the focus off her film.

A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small-town roots. But she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay instead, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. A story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, struggling to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. And in the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both.

Tim Tebow’s NFL Future Trying To Get Back On Radar

It seemed like Tim Tebow had fallen off the radar after the hoopla over the Patriots cutting him last August, but suddenly he’s eeking back onto the cultural consensus. After so much silence, earlier this month Tebow revealed that he was working as a football analyst for ESPN’s new SEC Network beginning August 14.

“I love doing this,” an enthusiastic Tebow told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “I want to do this for a long time. I love talking football and I love being around it.” He was quick to add that the suit was his least favorite part, and that he much prefers to be in shorts or pads.

This news stirred up his old college coach Urban Meyer who seemed stymied that Tebow was still unable to get an NFL team to take him on. “I still don’t get that part of it,” Meyer said. “He’s the second-most efficient passer ever to play college football. He had really good personnel around him [at Florida] and we utilized his skill very well,” Meyer continued. “I think in a traditional setting, it is difficult, but there’s a lot of non-traditional offenses now in the NFL.”

Tebow casually mentioned in an AP story that his agent has gotten a few calls from ‘interested’ NFL teams. This was over a week ago, but it’s got people talking about Tebow again. His fans are still very rabid, but it doesn’t seem like the NFL feels the same inspiration as they do.

As you can see in the video below, Tebow’s still training like he’s at football camp with the Danney-Ball special workout, so he’s keeping the faith like many of his fans.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera does love to tell the media about his love for Tebow, but with that much love, you’d think he’d make an advance, but at least for now, the guy has a good gig, and he’s still got his hand in the football game.

NFL Veterans Really Hate Training Camp

If you have ever sat through a boring company meeting (most any meeting would qualify as boring), then you can relate to veterans of the NFL. These guys who have been on teams for a few years hate everything involved with training camp. Camp is basically a company meeting with the additional aspect of running into each other head on. Camps are boring, tedious, and micro-management at its worst. In short it sucks.

There has been many a veteran NFL player whose career was cut a bit short, not by injuries, but by too many training camps. There have to be guys who just could not stomach one more year of position meetings, film breakdown from the prior season, or just having to go out in the summer heat long before meaningful games were to be played.

Training camp is great for rookies. These young pups have no idea about the NFL or what it is going to take to make it in the league. They do need the extra time to get ready for a full NFL season. They need meetings and all the instruction they can get shouted at them. The rookies are trying to get to where the vets are currently. The first year players need training on what to do on the field and off of it. They are just a few years removed from high school remember. So they need all the help they can get.

I know there are vets who need training camp to make sure they are in top shape for the regular season. But there are some guys like Adrian Peterson who keep themselves in tip-top shape no matter what. So why bother them with extra practice? It is not like Peterson and guys at his level are going to get much playing time in the preseason anyway. Teams are not going to risk them getting hurt before games that matter.

The boredom that comes with NFL training camp results in pranks and other time killing activities. Rookies get awful haircuts from veterans because the vets need something to occupy their time…and they enjoy being mean to the rookie hot shots.

There should be some kind of limit to how many years NFL players must attend training camp. A player who lasts for more than six years on the same team should be automatically exempt from camp. What is the point? If the guy is still there after that length of time, I am pretty sure he is playing at a high level and is dedicated to his craft. No need for him to waste part of his summer listening to the same old ‘coach speak’ and running drills that he knows like the back of his hand.

I am sure NFL coaches think training camp is vital to their team’s success. And I am sure there is some bonding that goes on in camp. But I cannot see that it is necessary for every player. Real professionals keep themselves ready to play all year round. They know the playbook and their role. I am not saying these vets should miss weeks and weeks of practice, but they can afford to miss some of the most redundant aspects of pro football. Who knows, it could extend a few careers. Don’t look for that to happen anytime soon. Coaches, like most bosses, think meetings are pivotal to a team’s success. The next time a labor agreement is on the table, the NFL Players Union should try to get some camp exemptions for vets. The union does not get very much in most negotiations, so perhaps the NFL could throw them a bone on this one.

Top 10 Can’t Miss Upcoming 2014 NFL Games

There are some weeks when you can flip around channels, watch NFL Red Zone only, or just record a couple games to watch in condensed fashion later. Then there are NFL games that demand you sit down and watch it live in its entirety without distraction. These regular season matchups should be the top games this season. Make sure and keep your schedule open for them. If you need excuses to miss any activity that might interfere with your viewing of these ten games, let me know. I have a list a mile long.

Atlanta hosts New Orleans on the opening Sunday of the NFL season. This game will tell us a lot about Atlanta’s chances of rebounding from last year’s implosion.

Eagles v. Colts in week two on Monday Night Football should be a fun game with plenty of scoring. Will Nick Foles be able to continue his unbelievable passing from 2013? I am sure Andrew Luck will continue his march toward an eventual Super Bowl and the Hall Of Fame. Yes, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Week three features a Super Bowl rematch, although the Super Bowl was hardly even a game. The Seahawks host the Broncos in what will hopefully be a competitive game this go around.

Another installment of Cowboys and Redskins on December 28th could determine the NFC East Champions. Or it could be another letdown for Cowboys fans as their team collapses at the end of another season.

The Packers and Falcons will be the Monday night game in week 14. If both franchises are on track, this game could have home-field playoff ramifications.

In week 11, Tom Brady and Andrew Luck will go head to head as the Patriots face the Colts. Indy fans are still not very fond of Mr. Brady, who carved their playoff hearts out many a time.

In week 16 the Patriots will face the Jets. There is no love loss between these two teams. Darrelle Revis has swapped sides from years past, so that will add some intrigue. If Geno Smith is still starting in week 16, the Jets will have had a rough season already.

In week ten, the Saints will play host to San Fran in a game pitting a great defense against a prolific offense. Drew Brees can throw on anyone if given time to get the ball out. The Niners will make that as hard as possible for the future Hall Of Famer.

Thanksgiving usually has some pretty crappy games. But this year the Cowboys and Eagles should make a good showing. If they do not, then you will have another chance for a great game at 8:30 as the 49ers and Seahawks get it on.

Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh probably hate each other. Check that, they do hate one another. Their teams collide again in week 15 for what could be the biggest regular season game of the year. 49ers v. Seahawks…..don’t schedule any other activities for that day.
