NFL Week 6 Matchups To Watch 2015

nfl 2015 logo image

Week Six is quickly approaching, and division rivalries are starting to get a lot more heated. There are a few big division matchups to watch this week, as well as plenty of big-name player matchups:

Giovani Bernard vs. Luke Kuechly: The Bengals have transformed into a run-first offense this season, relying heavily on Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill. The Bengals will most likely be running a lot more this weekend with A.J. Green likely to sit out with a turf toe injury. It’s always best to keep the ball out of Andy Dalton’s hands, and without his most reliable target on the field it will be even more crucial to run the ball effectively. Luke Kuechly is an absolute beast against the run, but he can’t stop it alone. In fact the Carolina Panthers have been completely ineffective against the run, even against the Baltimore Ravens who have struggled running the ball all season. Bernard and Hill should get a combined 30-35 touches; so if Kuechly is not able to bring some life to this Panthers defense, the Bengals will run their way to another big victory.

Brian Hoyer vs. Dick LeBeau and the Steelers defense: Brian Hoyer and the Cleveland Browns opened their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and after leading them back from a 24-point deficit Hoyer was forced to watch from the sideline as the Steelers won the game on the final drive. This time the Steelers travel to Cleveland hoping for the same result. Hoyer is playing beautifully, but Dick LeBeau is a defensive genius. LeBeau and the Steelers defense now have some experience against Hoyer along with four other weeks’ worth of film on the quarterback. Look for the Steelers to take away the Browns running game and force Hoyer to start throwing the ball down the field. As long as Hoyer is throwing against the tough Steelers secondary they will wait for him to make a mistake and capitalize on it.

Dez Bryant vs. Richard Sherman: With Calvin Johnson and A.J. Green both on the sideline this weekend, Dez Bryant may be the best wide receiver out there for Week Six. Bryant leads the league in receiving touchdowns since 2012, and even though the Cowboys have adopted a more run-based offense this season Bryant has still had a great year so far. Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys will be heading to Seattle on Sunday to take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks, which means Bryant will most likely be matched up with Richard Sherman for most of the game. Sherman is considered one of the few shutdown cornerbacks in the NFL, and he will also have Earl Thomas III over the top for extra help against Bryant. Expect Sherman to play man defense on Bryant for the entire game and to look for help from Thomas over the top and in the middle of the field. Bryant may not see the ball too much anyways, as Tony Romo will probably shy away from Sherman’s side of the field.

Top 10 UFC Fights I Would Love To See

top 10 ufc fights i want to see happen 2015

If I were running the UFC I would first need a gallon of coffee a day to keep the schedule that Dana White has to keep. Next I would start thinking about all the fights that I would want to make happen. The possibilities are endless with all the great talent in the UFC now. One thing about the UFC that separates it from boxing is that big fights are possible. There are no promoter beefs that keep superstars from testing themselves against the very best. If I were able to take Dana White’s spot at the top of the UFC, here are the fights I would most like to see.

  1. Robbie Lawler v. Matt Brown. I know they just fought but it was a great matchup. These two brawlers are perfect for each other.
  1. Cain Velasquez v. Fabricio Werdum. This fight is a go and will be on November 15th. Werdum shocked Travis Browne with a five round clinic, but the heavyweight champion is a different animal.
  1. Chris Weidman v. Vitor Belfort. I want to follow Weidman’s every move, no matter who he fights. The man who beat Anderson Silva twice has my full attention.
  1. Travis Browne v. Junior Dos Santos. I would pay to see this fight come off. Both guys have had some tough losses of late. But they have both seen great success in the Octagon also. Browne could redeem himself or drop further in the rankings.
  1. Roy Nelson v. Mark Hunt. When this fight gets started on September 20th, make sure you don’t blink. With two big swingers like these guys, it could be a short night.
  1. Jose Aldo v. Anthony Pettis. This would be a match for the ages between two current champions. Both fighters are physically dominant and have the experience to go with it.
  1. Johny Hendricks v. Robbie Lawler. Lawler keeps getting better, but so does the champion Hendricks. If they do meet again, it could turn into a trilogy when it is all said and done.
  1. Jon Jones v. Alexander Gustafsson. The first fight was worth the price of admission with Jones being taken to his limit. A rematch should have already happened.
  1. Ronda Rousey v. Cris “Cyborg” Justino. This would be a huge payday for the UFC in PPV buys I believe. Cyborg would have to really clean up her act to get a shot at Rousey though. Clean is not something she is know for being.
  1. Anderson Silva v. Georges St-Pierre. This one will most likely never happen with St Pierre retired and Silva tying to simply return from his broken leg. If something crazy happens it could materialize as a farewell fight for Silva and a one last stand for Georgess St-Pierre. Don’t hold your breathe though.

Atlanta Falcons Coach Mike Smith Failure With Antone Smith

atlanta falcons mike smith failure with antone smith

I have no idea why Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith cannot figure out how to get Antone Smith more touches. Check that, I don’t know why he refuses to get this man the football more often. It can’t be that Mike Smith can’t figure out how to do it. He is the freaking head coach, so he could give this touchdown factory the ball 32 times in a game if he wanted. For reasons that I, nor anyone else can figure out, the Falcons coach is content to let him have about four or five touches a game.

This issue started out as an interesting side note, but with the Dirty Birds looking like they are on their way to another dismal season, any help they can get would help greatly. I don’t think Mike Smith is coaching for his job yet, but two bad years in a row with about five to six wins would put him firmly on the hot seat in 2015. It would seem like the head coach has a good reason for not putting Antone Smith more heavily into each gameplan. One would assume that the journeyman running back has fumblitis or can’t protect Matt Ryan on passing plays. Those assumptions would be wrong. The guy holds onto the ball and has no evidence of poor pass protection according to detailed stats on Profootballfocus.com.

Antone Smith is not going to make any noise about his lack of playing time despite the fact that he has incredible numbers for the few touches he gets each week. He is happy to just have a roster spot after bouncing around the NFL for a couple years as a special teams player. It is up to Falcons fans to rise up and demand the former FSU baller get more chances to get to the endzone. Sure, his sample size is small but there is no way that these long TD runs game after game are an anomaly. 71% of his rushing yards have come on runs of 15 or more yards. Steven Jackson is not generating numbers anywhere near that. Jackson has no breakaway speed anymore and that is just a fact. He is still a tough runner but Atlanta needs to score on almost every drive to make up for one of the worst defenses in the league. They need six points in a hurry, not three yards and a cloud of dust then a punt.

Making the case for Smith to get into the game more should not take an act of Congress. The Falcons are in trouble, deep trouble. Sunday’s game at home was an embarrassing loss to the Bears. The O-line is woeful with all the injuries. And for some reason the receivers seemed like they were trying to look as bad as their defensive backs in terms of skill level. The receiving corp had seven dropped passes. Matt Ryan did his job, but his guys let him down. Antone Smith was the lone spark in the skill position. Maybe Ryan needs to get in his coach’s ear to get Antone Smith into the gameplan more. He had better do something fast or another year of his talent will be wasted on a team going nowhere.

The Falcons have nothing to lose by seeing if Smith can keep up his impressive stats over the long haul. Their defense can’t stop anyone and if they get behind it is not hard for their opponents to blitz Matt Ryan successfully with that injury depleted offensive line. Smith can’t turn all these problems around. He is just one guy, but he is a guy who has five touchdowns on only 23 touches. All his scores have come on plays over 38 yards. That is the very definition of an offensive weapon. The man needs the ball at least ten times a game to be a game changer. If any team is in need of changing their game, it is Atlanta. Coach Smith best take heed and stop trying things that are not working and play the difference makers.

NFL Week 6 Preview 2015

nfl 2015 logo image

Well the 1972 Miami Dolphins got to pop their champagne a lot earlier than normal as the last two undefeated teams fell in Week Five. The Raiders and Jaguars are still on pace to join the 1976 Buccaneers and 2008 Lions though. Here’s a look forward to Week Six:

Denver Broncos at New York Jets: The San Diego Chargers receiving core had their way with the Jets last week, and now it’s Peyton Manning’s turn to abuse them. Rex Ryan is determined to stick with Geno Smith, but he is dragging this team down. The Broncos should have no problem earning a sizable victory in New York.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns: In the season opener against Pittsburgh, Brian Hoyer led the Browns back from a 24 point deficit before losing on the final play. Clearly that wasn’t a fluke because he led them back from 25 last week in Tennessee. Hoyer seems to be the quarterback Browns fans have been praying for. The Steelers on the other hand are banged up and tanking. The Browns should be able to pull this one off at home.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans: Tennessee may be without Jake Locker again this week, but Jacksonville still doesn’t have a professional football team. The Jaguars fought hard last week, but they blew it in the end. If they can’t win at home, don’t expect anything different on the road.

Green Bay Packers at Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins still seem to think they won the Super Bowl after beating the Patriots in Week One. Aaron Rodgers on the other hand has significantly improved as the season has progressed. He didn’t do much last week against the Vikings, but he didn’t need to. The Packers should have no problem securing the W.

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings: Teddy Bridgewater is supposed to be back for the Vikings this week, and he has proven to be just the spark of life the Vikings needed. The Lions have a lot of great players; but they just can’t win games, especially with Calvin Johnson on the sideline. The Vikings should be able to pull off the upset at home.

Carolina Panthers at Cincinnati Bengals: The Panthers only won last week because the Bears imploded. The Bengals on the other hand got absolutely blasted by a Patriots squad that everyone had counted out. The Bengals are a fantastic team at home, and they should have no problem getting back on track against a struggling Carolina team.

New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills: Kyle Orton is definitely a better quarterback than E.J. Manuel, but he isn’t enough to make the Bills a great team. The Patriots have struggled all year, but they really have problems on the road. All things considered, it’s hard to say the Bills can beat the Patriots until they actually do. This should be a really good game.

Baltimore Ravens at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Glennon is a clear improvement over the struggling Josh McCown, and the Ravens don’t look like the 2012 Super Bowl Champions. The Ravens don’t really have much offensive power left besides Steve Smith, but he can’t do it all. The Bucs on the other hand have a lot to work with. Look for Tampa Bay to pull the upset.

Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons are a great team at home, and after losing a few in a row on the road they are pretty desperate for a win. The Bears on the other hand can’t really seem to win consistently anywhere. They turn the ball over constantly, and Jay Cutler still has yet to show he can lead this team effectively. Matt Ryan should be able to obliterate Chicago’s defense.

San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders: After what they did to the Jets, the Raiders might as well stay at home. It doesn’t matter who’s coaching the Raiders, they’re still the Raiders. The Chargers have a ton of weapons on offense, and they’re defense looks a lot better than in the past. Oakland fans might as well stay home.

Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks: The Cowboys might be the biggest surprise this season. At 4-1, they actually look like they want to win this season. Unfortunately, they have to bring their 4-1 record to Seattle. Tony Romo versus the Legion of Boom just sounds painful. The Seahawks should be able to win, but DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant may be able to keep it close.

Washington Redskins at Arizona Cardinals: Carson Palmer is still injured, and Drew Stanton won’t be playing this week either. Fortunately for the Cardinals they’re playing the Redskins. As long as someone can throw the ball in Larry Fitzgerald’s general direction this should be an easy win for the Cards.

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles are 4-1 despite a really poor offensive start, whereas the Giants are 3-2 because their offense has finally started working. Eli Manning is a consistently good quarterback on the road, so an upset isn’t out of the question. The Eagles have been doing fantastic on special teams this season, however; and that could easily be the difference maker in a Sunday Night game.

San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams: The 49ers still reported want Jim Harbaugh out, and the Rams are trying their best to keep Jeff Fisher in. It’s hard to play up to your potential for a coach you don’t like. The Rams are a tough team, especially for the 49ers. In fact, the Rams are the Niners biggest competition in the division over the past few years, even more so than the Seahawks. That being said, the Niners should still be able to pull off a victory; but it’ll be close, and it won’t be easy.

NFL Coaches Not Fond Of New Tricks

nfl coaches not fond of new tricks

The NFL is a hard place to get a head coaching job. There are only 32 positions available after all. So that fact makes it somewhat understandable that so many coaches do things one way….the same way every other NFL head coach has done them. No guy wants to be the black sheep that tries something out of the ordinary. It is one thing to lose a game making the traditional decisions, but quite another to lose after trying something out of the norm. Head coaches have strong personalities but even they don’t want the heat that comes with failure that happens after new logic is implemented in game plans. Coaches making millions don’t want pointed questions from $40,000 a year beat writers wanting to know why they didn’t take the safe field goal instead of going for six points.

There are guys that will change things up a bit. Chip Kelly is a good example. He brought in sleep experts along with nutritionists to make his players the best they can be around the clock, instead of just on game day. But Kelly’s on the field philosophy is not a total revolution. Sure, his offense runs at a hyper speed. But a fast paced offense is not a new concept at all. The Buffalo Bills were doing that back when they were going to Super Bowls four years in a row. The Eagles offense gets plays off faster than any team in history on average, but the idea was not Kelly’s. He just took it to the next level. I want to see a head coach come in to an NFL team and totally change a segment of the game. Not a mass overhaul. Just a portion of the game.

Last week the Rams beat the Seahawks based on two plays. They had a brilliant punt return for a touchdown. They faked out the Seahawks punting team with two guys back to receive. One acted as if he fell down while fielding the punt. The other returner actually caught the ball over his shoulder and had a clear path to the endzone as his teammate received all the defenders’ attention. The Rams also used a fake punt to get a first down to keep Russell Wilson off the field for a late drive, since that would have been a death sentence for most defenses. Trick plays won’t work every time obviously. And if they are tried too much they lose the element of surprise, which is what makes them work in the first place. But most coaches are scared to even try these types of plays at all. They would rather run the same offensive and defensive game plans all year long even if things are not working.

If I were a coach for a struggling team, I would rock the boat. By struggling, I mean no chance in hell of making the playoffs and a really good chance of losing 95 percent of the games this year. What does a team like the Raiders or Jaguars have to lose by trying something new and innovative? Their season is over in essence. Any games they win as moral victories only hurt their draft position for 2015. So coaches on teams going nowhere should try out some new ideas that pop into their heads during those 18 hour workdays we hear so much about. Surely they can come up with some trick plays here and there to at least excite their depressed fans for a while.

The type of innovation I am looking for will likely never happen in the NFL until years down the road. I am looking for the type of change that resembles the Arkansas high school coach who decided that punting was a bad idea…EVER. He goes for it on every fourth down and does onside kicks almost every time. It may sound crazy but his record during his time using these techniques is quite impressive. He had the courage to try something nontraditional and it actually worked.

What if an NFL head coach were to stop running the ball…EVER? That is not as far fetched as it sounds. There are stat experts outside the world of football who suggest that would be a better use of offensive plays. These number gurus may have a point and they are not influenced by decades of football tradition like NFL coaches. Head coaches are experts at football, no doubt. But they are so close to the game that they may miss possibilities. They see the game through the lens of their former coaches and mentors. Sometimes an outside prospective helps to bring in a better technique. Perhaps NFL coaches, present and future ones, should pick up the book “Freakonomics”. It could provide a flash of creativity that moves the game of football forward.

I love old school NFL football, but the game is changing. New safety rules, fines, and the erasing of defensive intimidation are giving the NFL a new feel. A creative coach here and there can strike while the iron is hot to make his own mark. The forward pass was once a novelty. Trick plays every series, no more rushing plays, or more fourth down tries could be the wave of the future. It just takes a coach with some guts to buck tradition.

J.J. Watt & Andrew Luck Are Stars Of THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

Finally fans got a decent game on Thursday Night Football. After a series of blowouts on the NFL Network’s showcase night of live games, the Colts and Texans put on a great game this week. Having J.J. Watt and Andrew Luck on the field at the same time certainly made the game interesting from the start. These two young players are at the top of their game and I was glad to have the chance to see them go at it.

This one could have gone the way of all the other Thursday night games this year. A blowout could have happened easily as the Colts opened up with a scoring barrage. They ended up leading Houston 24-0 after just one quarter of play. T.Y. Hilton made a couple of highlight reel catches and Luck was deadly accurate early in this game and finished 25/44 with three touchdown passes for the game.

The Texans made a game of it with their defense and got a couple of quick scores before the half to get it close at 27-14. J.J. Watt had another touchdown in this contest, which is becoming a habit for the big man. He also turned in two more sacks on the year and three pass deflections. The guy is truly a one man gang on defense. When Jadeveon Clowney returns to action, this Texans defense will be a scary event on opponents’ calendars the rest of the way.

Houston had a chance to win this one at the end but fell short 33-28. The Texans could have folded after getting punched in the head in the first period, but to their credit they kept in the game with some big plays on offense and defense. The game was a good one for the Colts as they got a divisional win. This contest also meant a lot for the NFL Network. They certainly didn’t need another lopsided game that viewers only watched through the third quarter.

One of the biggest takeaways from this game for fans, was getting to see the greatness of Andrew Luck in progress. He is only going to get better for the next few years. He is already among the top five quarterbacks in the league. Watching a young Peyton Manning and Tom Brady was great but we may not have realized how good they would become. I know for a fact how good Luck is going to be, unless injury stops him at some point. It is good to be able to appreciate greatness as it is shaped game in and game out.

I don’t know what to say about J.J. Watt. He is so dominant every time he steps on the field. He doesn’t have to lay a finger on the QB to disrupt the offense. His constant threat is enough to cause the opponents major headaches. He also just has a knack for finding the ball. Whether he is deflecting multiple passes a game or scooping up fumbles for a quick rumble to the endzone, the ball is like a magnet to #99. I don’t know how much time offensive coordinators spend on avoiding Watt‘s side of the field in game prep, but it is not enough apparently. Offensive linemen are a proud lot, but if they were being truthful, they would say that Watt gives them nightmares and causes them to get scolded in film rooms after games with the Texans.

The NFL is the NFL because of players like Luck and Watt. Guys like these are the stars of NFL Films. They make players around them better and make their coaches look smarter. On this night they even made Thursday Night Football competitive for a change.

Celebrity Gossip Roundup: Jennifer Lawrence Nude Photo Leak

jennifer lawrence photo leak

As the weather turns cooler the gossip in Hollywood just gets hotter. This week’s lineup includes the release of some steamy pics that were never meant to be seen by the public. Here is this week’s dose of intrigue, rumors and celebrity gossip.

Up first is the leaking of nude pictures of Jennifer Lawrence. Unlike other celebrities, Lawrence won’t let the recent rash of leaked nude photos turn her world upside down. In next month’s edition of Vanity Fair the cover story is all about Lawrence. She states within the story that her being an actress does not make it alright that intimate photos of her were released to the public without her knowledge or consent. Lawrence goes on to say that she wanted to write something to her fans addressing the leaking of the photos. However, whenever she tried to write anything she wasn’t happy about it. Lawrence says she didn’t feel the need to apologize to her fans because the leaked pictures were taken for a previous boyfriend whom she lived far away from. She feels that her pictures being leaked are not a crime or even a scandal it is simply a violation of her sexual rights. Lawrence spoke out against websites that feature sexually explicit pictures of unsuspecting people. She also spoke out against those looking at the photos and states that anyone has done so is simply contributing to the sexual offense of her and other women. As she takes this incident in stride it’s great to see a celebrity that can handle such a delicate situation with such grace and class.

This week’s celebrity gossip is definitely more heartfelt than much of the gossip over the past few weeks. The next piece of news is that Angelina Jolie in a recent interview with the French version of Marie Claire said that being a mother makes her feel more connected to her own late mother. She talked lovingly of her relationship with her mother and how, as a child, Jolie attended an Amnesty International dinner with her mom. She also stated that when she looks at her own children it makes her feel like she is in contact with her.

As heartwarming as that is, you knew we couldn’t get through the week in celebrity gossip without getting to the juicy stuff. This week it’s being provided by drama queen Mariah Carey in the wake of her break up with husband Nick Cannon. This past weekend during a concert performance Mariah Carey changed the lyrics to the Billie Holiday song “Don’t Explain.” Apparently with the change in lyrics it was obvious to her fans that she was referring to her soon to be ex – husband.  When asked for an explanation of the incident, Mariah Carey’s agent refused to speculate.

On the other end of the love spectrum Orlando Bloom is allegedly chasing after actress Margot Robbie, who he was seen kissing at January’s Golden Globe Awards. Whatever happened between them in January is something Orlando apparently wants to pursue. It is being reported that the actor has flooded his lady love with phone calls and texts made for the sole purpose of flirting with her. Much to Orlando’s chagrin, Margot Robbie is currently involved in a relationship with Tom Ackerley, an assistant director that she met on the set of her movie, “Suite Francais.”

Whether you want to believe the rumors or that, the media has accused Kim Kardashian of coming thisclose to accidently leaving a hotel in Paris without her baby. Two huge European media outlets report that Kardashian got into her limo while baby daughter North West was still in the hotel’s lobby. She reportedly almost drove away before realizing the baby wasn’t with her. However, Kardashian claims she had no intention of leaving without the baby and was simply checking to make sure the car seat was in place and was installed correctly before she brought the baby into the limo. Regardless of whether or not this is actually true it’s pretty believable, considering what airheads the Kardashians in general are known for being.

Fans of The Voice are buzzing about the upcoming addition of Taylor Swift to the show. The actress is going to serve as the key advisor for the duration of this TV season. She will be responsible for helping four teams of singers each week throughout the competition. Some of the things she will be advising participants on include their presence on stage, their vocal talents and on making sure they only perform songs that mesh with their personalities. Other celebrity sightings on this season of The Voice will include Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams.

Lena Dunham is in the news this week for her outspoken opinions on how women in show business are targeted differently than men in show business. She takes issue with the fact that women are expected to be good role models but men don’t have to deal with this expectation. These comments come in light of Dunham’s work on “Girls.” As the lead character on the show, Dunham was unsure of how much leeway she would have when it comes to the show’s material. She stated that the work she has done on “Girls” as at least partly due to her reactions to the way in which sexuality is portrayed. Clearly Dunham is not afraid to speak up about a subject many others in Hollywood would remain neutral on.

Kendall Jenner has been trying to break into modeling for a while and has been facing some resistance from the industry as she has been seen as an actress that simply wants to model. However, Victoria’s Secret is now reportedly interested in bringing her on as an Angel at the yearly fashion show the lingerie retailer puts on. The attention she garnered at NYC’s recent fashion week seems to have gotten them interested.

Check back next week for more celebrity gossip.

NFL Week 5 Recap 2015

We’re now five weeks through the 2014 NFL season, and it has become apparent that no lead is ever safe. In fact, teams this season are on pace to break the record for most comeback wins in a single season! With that, here’s the recap of all the Week Five action:

Minnesota Vikings 10 at Green Bay Packers 42: With Christian Ponder under center and Adrian Peterson on the sideline the Vikings knew they had no chance and pretty much didn’t try. In fact, Aaron Rodgers only had to throw 17 passes the entire game, completing only 12 of them for three touchdowns; and the Packers still won by 32 points. Obviously Teddy Bridgewater provided a lot more inspiration for the team than we thought.

Chicago Bears 24 at Carolina Panthers 31: Jay Cutler once again proved incapable of coming up clutch in big games. In fact, the Bears are now 2-3 having lost two in a row due to poor play by Cutler. The Bears as a team did pretty well, and this game was very back and forth until the end. Newton didn’t do fantastic but at least his team won which is a definite improvement. Cutler’s play in the fourth quarter set Newton up in a good position to score: an interception led to a game-tying field goal. Cutler needs to start earning his nine-figure contract soon.

Cleveland Browns 29 at Tennessee Titans 28: This game was the largest comeback win on the road in NFL history. The Browns were down 28-3 before staging an outstanding comeback. Jake Locker just can’t win: he had the Titans in a great position before being knocked out of the game with concussion-like symptoms. Charlie Whitehurst threw a couple of TDs after coming out on the field, but in the second half he was unable to do anything as he watched the Browns stage their comeback. Brian Hoyer did an amazing job staying calm as the team came back, and as a result we probably won’t be seeing much more of Johnny Manziel this season.

St. Louis Rams 28 at Philadelphia Eagles 34: This was almost the greatest comeback in NFL history. The Eagles jumped to a 34-7 lead before the Rams suddenly came to life. The Rams could have completed the comeback if it weren’t for their countless mistakes. The Rams had three fumbles, tons of false start penalties, and countless drops. Austin Davis actually did pretty well aside from those drops, finishing with 375 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles really did not play that well. Chip Kelly’s squad was able to capitalize on all of the Rams mistakes, but the offense was lacking overall.

Atlanta Falcons 20 at New York Giants 30: Eli Manning may have taken a few years off, but the two-time Super Bowl MVP is back with a vengeance this season. The Giants continue to look great at home which is something they have struggled with in the past, and Manning is lighting up the field. The Giants torched the Falcons, and Matt Ryan showed once again that he is incapable of winning outside the comfort of the Georgia Dome. Ryan was under pressure the entire game, but he was also unable to finish any of the drives he started, resulting in a sad 20-point performance.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31 at New Orleans Saints 37: The Saints always manage to pull out the win in the Superdome even when they really don’t deserve it. The Saints looked horrible the entire game against a bad Buccaneers team, but in their defense they did lose Jimmy Graham and center Jonathan Goodwin early in the game. Drew Brees finished 35-of-57 for 371 yards, two touchdowns, and three bad interceptions. Brees clearly struggled without Graham on the field; and he made rookie mistakes on his interceptions, one of which he threw straight up in the air to avoid the sack and watched from the ground as it was returned for a touchdown. Mike Glennon once again showed an ability to lead the Bucs better than Josh McCown, with his only big mistake being the safety he took at the hands of Junior Galette which allowed the Saints to come back and tie the game.

Houston Texans 17 at Dallas Cowboys 20: This was an all-around great game to watch whether you were cheering for the Texans or the Cowboys. Unfortunately for the Texans though, they allowed the Cowboys to stick around and ended up losing in overtime as a result. The Cowboys made a lot of mistakes: Dez Bryant dropped a few balls, Romo overthrew everyone and threw an interception, DeMarco Murray had yet another fumble, and Dan Bailey even missed a field goal that would have won them the game in regulation. The biggest takeaway for the Texans should be that they still don’t have a quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw one pick and nearly had another one. He also failed to do anything for the team in overtime. Fitzpatrick finished with only 154 yards.

Buffalo Bills 17 at Detroit Lions 14: The Lions lost this one in typical Lions fashion: Matthew Stafford threw a horrible interception, Eric Ebron dropped a sure-fire touchdown, and Alex Henery missed three field goals. Three. Kyle Orton didn’t start out perfectly; but he finished with 308 yards, a touchdown, and the one early pick-six making him the clear better option over E.J. Manuel. Orton got a lot of help from the Lions offense, but he also showed some ability to read a defense—something Manuel has yet to show he can do.

Baltimore Ravens 13 at Indianapolis Colts 20: It looked like the Colts kind of brushed off the Ravens and were already looking forward to their matchup against the Texans, because this game should not have been as close as it was. Andrew Luck struggled against the Ravens defense, and the Colts won this game with their defense as opposed to their high-powered offense. Luck’s two interceptions nearly cost the Colts the game, and it really wasn’t until the end of the game that he started playing like himself. Fortunately for the Colts, they were playing Joe Flacco and able to keep the Ravens offense down. Flacco finished with only 235 yards and an interception going 22-of-38, but this loss wasn’t completely his fault. Steve Smith had an early fumble and Jacoby Jones muffed a punt, but taking a sack on fourth down and one in the red zone didn’t help Flacco’s image.

Pittsburgh Steelers 17 at Jacksonville Jaguars 9: The Jaguars were actually in striking distance of the Steelers for most of this game, but they showed once again that they are the Jaguars. Blake Bortles was very inconsistent, finishing 22-of-36 for only 191 yards and two costly interceptions including a pick six in the second half which ruined any chance the Jags had of pulling off the upset. The Steelers looked great on offense despite managing only 17 points. In the second half they ran the ball a lot more with Le’Veon Bell and had no problem moving the chains.

Arizona Cardinals 20 at Denver Broncos 41: The Broncos offense had a pretty good grip on this game despite no help from the defense once again. The biggest story out of this game, however, is Peyton Manning’s 500th career touchdown pass. Manning finished the game with an outstanding 479 yards and four touchdowns; so he is now at 503, and trails Brett Favre by only five touchdowns for the most of all time. The other big story is Brandon McManus’s two field goal misses in Denver where it is usually pretty easy to knock them down. The Broncos cut Matt Prater last week, and now that decision looks to be coming back to haunt them.

Kansas City Chiefs 17 at San Francisco 49ers 22: Although this will most likely be Jim Harbaugh’s final season in San Francisco and the players no longer want him as their coach, they haven’t given up on the season just yet. The Niners embarrassed their former quarterback, Alex Smith. The 49ers didn’t play great, but they did just well enough to stop a desperate Chiefs team with a really good defensive line. The Chiefs and Smith actually had a chance to win the game at the end in San Francisco, but Smith threw an interception and got laughed at by his former home crowd.

New York Jets 0 at San Diego Chargers 31: There’s really not much to say about this game. Geno Smith is not a quarterback, and Michael Vick is too old. The Jets had 74 total passing yards. The Chargers defense isn’t that good, the Jets are just that bad.

Cincinnati Bengals 17 at New England Patriots 43: Apparently the Patriots aren’t out yet, they just suck on the road. That or Bill Bellichick still has other teams’ practice tapes for when things get tough. The Patriots played pretty well, but the Bengals were in playoff mode. You just know it isn’t going to be a good game for the Bengals when A.J. Green fumbles. Brady used his vast array of weapons in this game, including six catches for 100 yards by Rob Gronkowski who looked healthy again. Dalton looked bad as usual finishing 15-of-24 for 204 yards and two touchdowns, but the Bengals numerous mistakes made him look worse than he usually is.

Seattle Seahawks 27 at Washington Redskins 17: Seattle absolutely dominated this game. The Redskins were unable to do anything for most of the game on offense, but they did have a few big plays against the Seahawks defense. DeSean Jackson stunned fantasy owners by putting up 157 yards and a touchdown against the NFL’s number one defense. The Seahawks also showed that they still aren’t that good on the road. Russell Wilson had a few good plays but overall couldn’t really finish most of the drives.

ESPN Is Roger Goodell’s Shield Against Bill Simmons – NFL Controversy

bill simmons from espn for calling nfl roger goodell out 2014

Bill Simmons stirred up a hornets’ nest when he had the audacity, read integrity, to question Roger Goodell‘s honesty about the Ray Rice video. Actually he didn’t really question his honesty. Since Simmons referred to Goodell as an outright liar, I guess there was no honesty for him to question in the first place. Simmons stated on his podcast that Goodell is lying about having not seen the Ray Rice video part two. While everyone else on the evil four letter network either avoided that possibility or skirted around saying that Goodell was being dishonest, Bill Simmons had the balls to directly say what most fans think. Most fans believe Goodell is lying about the video while others say that if he is being truthful then he is incompetent, which is almost as bad. The percentage of folks that believe Goodell acted with 100% integrity on this matter is very low.

These remarks got Simmons in trouble of course with ESPN upper management, better known as suits. He even dared them to call him out and say he was in trouble about his comments, during the same podcast episode. They obliged him and suspended him for three weeks. ESPN’s official statement read, “Every employee must be accountable to ESPN and those engaged in our editorial operations must also operate within ESPN’s journalistic standards. We have worked hard to ensure that our recent NFL coverage has met that criteria. Bill Simmons did not meet those obligations in a recent podcast, and as a result we have suspended him for three weeks.” I am aware that a big corporation like ESPN has rules for the employees and when they are broken they have the right to punish the person appropriately. It is just a shame that Simmons got in trouble for stating the obvious and it is not like he was saying something totally off the wall. As I said, Goodell is believed to be lying about this Ray Rice thing by most people familiar with the situation. As far as I am concerned, Bill Simmons went above his journalistic duties and the guidelines set by his bosses. He had more integrity than others too scared to get in the face of Roger Goodell and call him out publicly.

When things like this happen it just bolsters peoples’ hatred for ESPN. People already hate Goodell, so that is a separate matter. ESPN is the best and worst thing to happen to sports ever. We love it as it brings the sports world to so many homes and in so many formats. Without ESPN, sport television programming of 2014 looks nothing like it does currently. I remember the days of catching three minute highlight features on the local news. That was awful compared to what SportsCenter does for us with highlights and recaps. The dark side of ESPN is mainly because of its success which made it the humongous corporate entity that it is today. They are beholden to endless sponsors. They create fake debates to drum up viewers to get mesmerized with the low brow talk of personalities like Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. And one of the worst indictments of the mega sports media company is that they are a lapdog for the NFL. If the NFL doesn’t want a certain narrative to get steam, they can have a word with the suits at ESPN and possibly have it quieted. We all remember how the popular ESPN show Playmakers, loosely based on the NFL, was axed suddenly. Clearly the NFL did not like the ugly picture painted by the fictional show and it was canned. I understand how partnerships work. ESPN should be concerned about the image of the NFL and its commissioner. However, ESPN is supposed to be a journalist operation. They have the duty to put out truthful commentary even when it makes a big dog partner like the NFL a bit angry. What is the NFL going to do? Stop doing projects and live games on ESPN? The network is pretty damn powerful itself.

Roger Goodell is a big boy. He is a smug, arrogant lawyer who is having to take some of his own medicine. He shouldn’t need ESPN to shield him from Bill Simmons. He is supposed to be this high integrity fellow who wanted to be the sheriff of the NFL. He was to be the judge and jury of all off the field problems that came up. This role is what he desired so he could rule the NFL with an iron fist. He was doing just that when Ray Rice went barbarian in an elevator and Goodell decided that he shouldn’t be too harsh on the Ravens running back. That is where he really screwed up and then made it worse when he made it clear he had never seen the second video. He was then made to look a fool by a TMZ reporter who said a simple phone call was all it took to get a copy of the casino elevator footage. Goodell has since been chastised by several female commentators and womens’ groups. Bill Simmons just happens to be the journalist who took it next level and bluntly accused the man of being a low down liar.

I couldn’t be more impressed with the boss at Grantland. He could have made his point about Goodell without getting in hot water. A little zigging and zagging with the right words could have conveyed his disgust with ole’ Rog without using the word liar. But that would have been the easy path….the one most commentators took. Simmons is not your run of the mill journalist. That is part of the reason that ESPN gave him his own platform at Grantland. He separated himself from the pack long ago with his unique approach to sports writing. The suits at ESPN would do well to remember that their job isn’t to shape the message to please the NFL and Roger Goodell. They need to remember what journalism is all about instead of trying to please their most important partner. Hardcore sports fans already hate the corporatism of ESPN. Suspending Bill Simmons for saying what the guys at the office water cooler and on the construction sites were already saying, just makes ESPN look bad. Hurting their own image to protect Goodell makes little sense to me. #FreeSimmons

NFL Week 5 Top Matchups 2015

nfl 2015 logo image

Week Five is right around the corner, and there are plenty of big name matchups to watch for this week. No one can watch every game, so here’s some stuff to look out for this week:

Roddy White and Julio Jones vs. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Prince Amukamara: The Falcons have not been playing well on the road, and the Giants are coming off a game in which they forced four Kirk Cousins interceptions. Julio Jones is averaging over 110 yards per game this season, and Roddy White manages over 13 yards per carry; but if the Falcons want to start winning on the road they will need more production from their top two receivers. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Prince Amukamara have been on top of their game this season. In fact, last week against the Washington Redskins the Giants cornerback duo held Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson to a total of three catches and giving up nothing on the sidelines. The combination of the Giants secondary along with their top-notch defensive line may be too much for the Falcons and Matt Ryan to handle on Sunday.

DeMarco Murray vs. Brian Cushing and J.J. Watt: The Cowboys are sitting on a 3-1 record right now largely in part to their transformation into a run-first offense lead by DeMarco Murray. Murray has absolutely shattered expectations and is currently on pace for over 2,000 yards on 5.5 yards per carry this season. Murray hasn’t been perfect—the Dallas running back has three fumbles in four games this season—but the Cowboys are still feeding him the ball early and often each week. Murray brings his NFL-leading yardage total into Week Five against the Houston Texans and their All-Star front which includes names like J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing. The Texans have been giving up 130.2 rushing yards per game this season, but they will certainly be giving the running game more attention heading into Sunday’s game. If Watt and Cushing are able to contain Murray and prevent him from breaking through into the secondary, the Cowboys will be forced to rely on Tony Romo thus giving the Texans the best chance to win.

Peyton Manning vs. Todd Bowles and the Cardinals Secondary: The Cardinals are putting their unblemished 3-0 record on the line in Denver against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. Manning is still playing at the top of his game, although the Broncos have yet to reach the record-breaking level that the offense was playing at last season. Cardinals’ defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has done a fantastic job this season despite being without Daryl Washington and Darnell Dockett, but it will be interesting to see if he will be able to even phase Manning. It takes a lot to throw The Sheriff off his game, but if Bowles is not able to phase the five-time NFL MVP he will have to sit on the sideline and watch his team get steamrolled by the Broncos offense.

NFL Week 4 Wrap Up – 2014

rp_nfl-trade-deadline-20141-600x400.jpg

Another wild week in the NFL has been closed out. This go around it was mostly on the field headlines, which is a good thing for the NFL as a league, the players, and the fans. Week to week it gets no clearer who the front runners are in this 2014 season. Teams gain some ground only to fall back or vice versa. A quarter way through the year it is clear that the Super Bowl trophy is up for grabs and any so called expert that says they know who will end up there, is out of touch with reality.

Let me get the least shocking news out of the way first. The Raiders have gone and fired another coach. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. They have had what seems like 42 coaches over the past 20 years. The only reason any coach takes the Raiders job is because that is their best option to make a quick buck. No one goes into that situation thinking it will bolster their coaching resume. Oakland would be better off to do their hiring through a temp agency like Randstad. Or maybe they should give a high school coach a shot at it. My vote would be for the high school coach that never punts and does onside kicks most of the time. That would make the Raiders at least interesting once again.

The Atlanta Falcons are awesome at home and they are atrocious on the road. They got beat soundly by a Minnesota team that lost its best player, Adrian Peterson, to suspension and was starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are going to have to win every single home game they play to have a remote chance of getting into the playoffs. I don’t know who they can beat on the road at this point. They have the Giants, who have improved over their first two losses with back to back wins, next week on the road. They also have the Bucs on the road in a few weeks. Other than those two games, I can’t see them getting a win away from Atlanta. They even have to play the Lions in England. That game is so far from home, they should just forfeit or send the practice squad to save the effort of the starters. As a side note that is really not a side note at all, the offensive line is now fully destroyed by injuries. They were not the best unit by any stretch, but now that center Joe Hawley and tackle Lamar Holmes are done for the year, Matt Ryan will be running for his life.

I am pretty amazed at all the Tom Brady hating going on after the Patriots got outclassed by the Chiefs on Monday Night Football 41-14. The big media has been in love with Brady for a long time now, but it appears that love affair is about to come to a nasty end. I still find Tom Brady to be on his game. The problem is with the so called weapons he has around him. Gronk is not back to 100% yet but has been decent. Other than that, he has no running game to depend on and no receivers that scare even the worst secondaries in the NFL. I know Brady has done great things with average wideouts in the past, but now these guys are well below average. Julian Edelman is the best they have to offer….really? This guy would not start on 90% of the NFL teams out there and the only reason he gets any credit at all is because of Brady! A post game reporter had the nerve to ask Bill Belichick about possibly benching Brady. Belichick didn’t even respond verbally to such an insane question. The look he gave said it all. Tom Brady is not what he once was, but is far from ready for the scrap heap. The Pats have gathered receivers from the aforementioned scrap heap. That is the issue with the offense, not Tom Brady.

Apparently three NFC Title game appearances are not enough for some NFL players. According to Deion Sanders, several 49ers players are ready for Jim Harbaugh to be shipped off. No players were named in the report of course but it sounds like the coach’s message may be wearing on the San Fran ballers. Harbaugh is an intense guy and I can imagine that can take a toll after three plus years. But if the reports are true, it is surprising given all the success that has been enjoyed by the team with Harbaugh. Even if the team is not fully happy with their coach, it just shows how teams can still win, even with a little bitterness inside the locker room. Great teams can overcome things like that but over time these situations do get worse and implode. I would not put money on Harbaugh being in charge of the Niners in 2015. He is at odds with upper management and if the players truly are tired of him, it will be time to move on after this year. By the way, Harbaugh and his team got a big win over the Eagles to get back to .500 at 2-2.

The Ravens appear to be a very solid team even without Ray Rice. They sit at 3-1 after completely out playing Carolina in a 38-10 victory. The Panthers got waxed by Steve Smith for three scores. Smith was released by Carolina after last year to save some cap money. That move certainly looks not so well thought out after a few weeks into the season. Smith is the best wide out on the Ravens roster and is 3rd in the entire league in receiving yardage. Cap space should be saved for great players with high value. The Panthers had a great receiver that was earning his paycheck but they chose to just toss him aside.

Other games of note from week four saw the Packers getting right with a much needed win against the Bears. The Texans went to 3-1 as JJ Watt put on a clinic of athleticism. The Cowboys are now 3-1 after beating a Saints team that is worse on the road than even Atlanta. Tampa Bay had a last minute touchdown to nip the Steelers.

With the way teams are playing up and down, this season could see tight divisional races up to the last couple of weeks. Any given Sunday, each game is up for grabs…except for Raiders and Jaguars games of course.

NFL Week 5 Preview 2015

nfl 2015 logo image

Dennis Allen is out in Oakland, the Raiders have a bye week, and they’ll probably still find a way to lose this week. Here’s Week Five:

Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers: Teddy Bridgewater looked great at home last week, but the Vikings defense will have a hard time keeping the game close enough for him to win on the road against Aaron Rodgers. The Packers offense looked fantastic in Chicago against a good Bears defense, so they should have no problem running over the Vikings.

Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers: Jay Cutler reminded everyone that he’s not that good, and the Panthers got absolutely crushed again. The Panthers defense can finally find itself in front of its home crowd with a little help from Cutler. But, if the Panthers still can’t move the ball on offense it won’t be of any assistance. This game will come down to whether or not Cam Newton can score.

Cleveland Browns at Tennessee Titans: Brian Hoyer has been playing well, so this is he chance to snag a road win. The Titans have a messy quarterback situation right now, leaving this game wide open for the Browns to steal. The Titans are coming off a big loss to Indianapolis, whereas the Browns are coming off a bye week. Look for the Browns to pull off the upset, or look for Browns fans to start questioning Hoyer’s ability to lead the team.

St. Louis Rams at Philadelphia Eagles: Bad teams have had no luck this year against good teams coming off a loss (i.e. Jacksonville vs. the 0-2 Colts). Don’t expect the Rams to come out and miraculously pull off the upset in Philadelphia. This game is pretty much a guaranteed blowout.

Atlanta Falcons at New York GiantsThe Falcons continue to show that they can’t win on the road, and the Giants are finally starting to pull it together. Matt Ryan has not looked good on the road this season, and he has to go against a Giants defense that forced four Kirk Cousins interceptions. Expect Eli Manning and the G-Men to do just enough to pull out the victory at home.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints: Mike Glennon looked pretty good last weekend during the Buccaneers last minute win over Pittsburgh, but the Saints simply don’t lose at home. Drew Brees and Sean Payton aren’t used to starting off 1-3, so expect them to make some adjustments. For the Saints, this game is pretty much a must win. A loss here could knock them out of the division title run already.

Houston Texans at Dallas Cowboys: Both of these teams were supposed to be awful, but somehow they are both 3-1 right now. Dallas’s offense is spectacular as always and their defense showed some signs of existence against the Saints Sunday Night. Houston has a pretty good defense, but Ryan Fitzpatrick has yet to prove that he can win against decent teams. The Cowboys should have no problem winning at home.

Buffalo Bills at Detroit Lions: E.J. Manuel has been benched, and Kyle Orton will be starting Week Five for the Buffalo Bills. Orton receives a lot of criticism, but he can definitely get the job done. With that being said, the Lions should have no problem getting the job done at home. Calvin Johnson has been quiet recently, but expect Matthew Stafford to look for him a lot more this week with the home crowd behind him.

Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts: The Ravens are 3-1 right now and coming off a big win over the struggling Panthers. This is their chance: if the Ravens can win this game, then people will begin to look at them like the Super Bowl XLVII champions again. However, more likely than not, Andrew Luck and the Colts offense will knock some sense into the Ravens.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Jacksonville Jaguars: The Steelers had an epic collapse at the end of the game last week against the winless Buccaneers after soundly defeating the Panthers the week before. The Jaguars are the Jaguars. Blake Bortles may be able to do enough in his first start at home to keep the game from becoming a blowout, but don’t expect much more.

Arizona Cardinals at Denver Broncos: Drew Stanton has done a good job in place of the injured Carson Palmer, but the Cardinals bring their unblemished record to Denver this week to take on Peyton Manning. The Cardinals defense is good, but the Broncos are still angry about their overtime loss to the Seahawks and aren’t about to drop another one. Since the Broncos still don’t have a defense this game could be kind of close, but Manning won’t let it get too close.

Kansas City Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers: The Chiefs destroyed Tom Brady and the Patriots Monday Night, but that’s not really that impressive. The 49ers on the other hand managed to defeat the 3-0 Eagles last week despite all the locker room problems they have had recently. The Niners should be able to win this game too, but expect Alex Smith to come out firing against his former team.

New York Jets at San Diego Chargers: Geno Smith is still not good. That’s not going to change within the course of one week. Philip Rivers on the other hand looks fantastic, and the Chargers have been tearing it up on the field lately. This year could finally mark the end of the Rex Ryan era in New York.

Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots: The Bengals had no problem defeating the Patriots last year when they were actually good. Tom Brady couldn’t throw a touchdown against their defense last season, so he certainly won’t be throwing one this season. The Bengals are undefeated and coming off a bye week. Unless Bill Bellichick has something crazy up his sleeve (like maybe a videotape of the Bengals practices) this should be an easy win for Cincy.

Seattle Seahawks at Washington: The Redskins are coming off a 31 point loss at home, but Russell Wilson isn’t any good when his defense doesn’t do all the work for him on the road. If Kirk Cousins can bounce back and play like he did against the Eagles in Week Three then the Redskins could actually win this game. However, that’s not very likely against a very good Seattle defense. The Seahawks win a close one.
