NFL Week 10 Hottest Matchups To Watch

nfl 2014 season hottest matchups

With five big divisional matchups this week including the always exciting Chicago Green Bay rivalry. It’s impossible to watch everything, but here’s a few matchups you should keep an eye on this week:

ndamukong suh versus mike pouncey

Ndamukong Suh vs. Mike Pouncey: Pouncey didn’t have a great start to the season, but he has come around in recent weeks along with the rest of the Miami Dolphins team. The Dolphins are coming off a 37-0 rout of the San Diego Chargers in which the Chargers defense provided little to no resistance throughout the game. This week the Dolphins are at Ford Field to take on the Detroit Lions and the number one defense in the NFL. The biggest question in this game is can Pouncey stop Suh, easily one of the top three defensive linemen in the NFL. Ryan Tannehill will have a hard enough time against this Lions’ defense without being thrown to the ground every other play.

peyton manning versus oakland raiders images 2014

Peyton Manning vs. the Raiders’ Defense: It seemed like Peyton Manning was the only player on the Broncos team that made the trip to New England last week, but this week the Broncos have the winless Oakland Raiders. After an embarrassing loss on the road, the Broncos are looking to bounce back with a huge road win over the Raiders. Manning wasn’t happy with his team after last week’s loss, so he just may come out and fire off eight touchdowns against the Raiders. If you love high-powered offenses picking on weak defenses, this is the game for you.

brandon marshall versus sam shields images 2014

Brandon Marshall vs. Sam Shields: This matchup is a big if, because Jay Cutler could easily screw this up by constantly throwing to the wrong team like he’s known to do. Brandon Marshall can definitely help Cutler out though—getting open against Shields quickly would allow Cutler to get rid of the ball before Clay Matthews and company has a chance to drag him to the ground. Alshon Jeffery will most likely be matched up against Tramon Williams, so his ability to get open will impact this game as much as Marshall’s. But let’s be honest, it’s almost impossible to get open enough for Cutler.

NFL Week 10 Preview – Season Half Over Already

nfl 2014 season preview

The 2014 NFL is half over. I know, I cried a little too. Now is the time where the Super Bowl contenders start to really separate themselves from the other playoff teams. This is also the week where division matchups start to become a lot more meaningful. There’s a few of those as well as plenty of other great games. Here’s Week 10:

Jacksonville Jaguars at Dallas Cowboys: Everything points to Tony Romo returning for this matchup in London. The Jaguars suck, and their game last year in London was an absolute embarrassment. Cowboys should have no problem taking down the Jags.

Miami Dolphins at Detroit Lions: The Dolphins have been playing great the last few weeks, including a 37-0 rout of the Chargers last week. Unfortunately for Miami, the Lions are at home and still have the number one defense in the NFL. Ryan Tannehill just isn’t ready for a big game like this, so the Lions should have no problem getting the W at home.

Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs: Kyle Orton has definitely shown that he deserves to be the starter in Buffalo; but that doesn’t mean that he’s going to win every game, especially on the road in Arrowhead. The Chiefs are a vastly underrated team in 2014, and they should have no problem taking down the Bills in front of the home crowd.

San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints: The Saints look fantastic all of a sudden. They’re coming off of their first road win in eight games, and they had a few extra days to prepare. Oh yeah, and they’re in the Super Dome. The 49ers might as well save the gas and stay home.

Tennessee Titans at Baltimore Ravens: The Titans are really bad. The Ravens lost big against the Steelers, but the Steelers could beat anyone right now. The Ravens are going to take advantage of this game against a rookie quarterback and secure a big win at home.

Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Jets: Ben Roethlisberger has 12 touchdowns and no interceptions over the last two games. The Jets are luck to go a quarter without turning the ball over three times. Steelers should have no problem winning big on the road.

Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: This game is probably going to suck again, but it wouldn’t be the 50 point blowout it was last time these two teams met. This game will come down to who can screw up less, and normally that’s the Buccaneers. This is a hard game to call, but the Falcons seem to have the edge.

Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders: This is going to be an absolute rout. The Broncos are still mad about last week; and they get to take it out on the poor, winless Raiders. Peyton Manning might just mess around and throw 10 touchdowns.

St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals: The Rams defense looked absolutely unstoppable last week, but they aren’t actually that good. The Cardinals on the other hand are really good. The Rams may be able to keep it close, but they won’t be able to pull off the upset on the road.

New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks: Last time the Seahawks played the Giants they picked off Eli Manning five times. Don’t expect another five interceptions, but don’t expect a win from the G Men on the road either. Maybe Eli can at least keep it close like the Raiders did.

Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers: The Bears are really bad this season. The Packers are overrated, but even they have shown an ability to beat Chicago at will. Look for Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers to both throw to Packer players.

Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles: Mark Sanchez filled in nicely for the injured Nick Foles. Carolina looks really bad lately, including a loss at home to New Orleans. Even Sanchez can’t screw this one up.

SURVIVOR SAN JUAN DEL SUR Episode 7 Recap: Julie Back To Rocker Country

As this week’s Survivor kicked off the castaways discussed the problems caused by Dale. Turning to the new challenges that await them the castaways read a tree mail including instructions on arriving at their next obstacle at the headland trail. At this point they found out that a merger has taken place.

The merge proved more exciting to some than to others. The element of the blood vs water twist of this season is putting the pressure on all of them to make this merge work to their advantage.

As the castaways feast on cheese, trail mix, shrimp, lobster and more their spirits soared. The merger helps loved ones come together in this game, which is a relief to some but intimidating to others.

The speed at which they are expected to move since the merge caused some of them to slow down considerably. Jeremy referred to the merge as a milestone but stated that the game officially starts now and that everyone needs to step up their game from here on out. Jeremy angled to get the two couples cooperating with him in a bid to make progress in the game.

Day 17 of the game turns out to be Wes’s birthday, which his own father, Keith, forgets about until he overhears someone else wish him a happy birthday. To make amends Keith brought him a delicious looking crab to eat.

Upon arriving at their new home site Jeremy expressed his desire to speak with John about the direction the game is going in. With four people and eight couples in the game Josh hit on the idea of the couples working together against the singles.

This week Baylor is struggling with the fact that she has to turn her back on people who have helped her make it this far in the game. As the plot thickens everyone is doing their part to look out for themselves and try to ensure that they have a fighting shot at winning the entire season. Jacyln and John were torn about the direction they need to move in to advance in the competition.

One of the biggest struggles on any episode of Survivor is having enough food to sustain everyone. But this week Julie (who was said to be the smallest of all the castaways) was caught hiding all the rest of the trail mix in her bag so she could keep it for herself and her allies. While this may seem like a minor thing to some viewers to the survivors it brings up issues of trust. Jon called her selfish as a result and stated that he couldn’t trust having an alliance with her. So this calculated move on Julie’s part may be enough to get her thrown under the bus by those who previously stuck together with her.  The reactions of everyone else made Julie realize that for her the game is starting to take a turn for the worse.

Once Jeff arrived at camp the immunity challenge for the day was explained. Baylor had to give up her tribal immunity from last week. In this round individual immunity was promised to those who earn it.

The immunity challenge for the week involved balancing a small ball on a large disk. Each person had to balance one ball for half an hour before another ball was added in. Jeremy was the first to be eliminated from the challenge as he dropped his ball rather quickly during the first 10minute round of the challenge. This meant Jeremy was one of the ones at risk of going home this week. Missy was the next one to lose the challenge and face the same possible fate as Jeremy.

Jeff announced that round two was going to be the hardest part of this challenge so far. Jackyln was the first one to be eliminated from round two. Natalie then contended with a sudden gust of wind and lost, making her the second to be eliminated from the second round. Josh, Wes, Keith and John were the only ones that remained in the competition at this point. All four made it to the last part of this week’s immunity challenge.

Wes, Keith and John ended up being the final three fighting for immunity this week. John was then quickly eliminated leaving the competition for immunity between Keith and his son Wes. Wes was the one to walk away with immunity for the week.

This leads us to the heart and soul of the show. After the immunity challenge ended the castaways were sent back to camp to await the evening tribal council and their fate when it comes to the future of this game.

Back at camp the tribe cooked up what little food they had and the comment was made that it would be nice to be able to have some trail mix. This was a subtle message to Julie to let her know her fellow contestants were onto the fact that she took the trail mix and wasn’t exactly open minded about sharing it. This made Julie angry and made her admit that she was lost and confused. Missy stated that though she was pissed off at Julie for taking the trail mix herself she knew that if Julie was the one voted off it would cause problems for Missy and her allies.

Josh did state that he felt John was doing a good job at the game. Meanwhile the others plotted to have Jeremy eliminated from the game. They also discussed that one of the reasons they wanted Jeremy to go is that he was determined to get rid of the couples. Their plan was to get to the point where only eight survivors remain and at that point it is pretty much every man for himself.

At the end of this week’s show, Julie caved to the pressure and voluntarily quit the game, sending the others into a frenzy of confusion and wonder.

NFL Week 9 2014 Recap: Saints Road Warriors & Philip Rivers Dries Out MVP Chances

nfl 2014 season recaps

The New Orleans Saints got a road win, and Philip Rivers dropped out of every MVP conversation in the country. Tony Romo is hurt, Nick Foles is hurt, and Robert Griffin III couldn’t even beat the Minnesota Vikings. Here’s the whole of Week 9 in the NFL:

new orleans saints win nfl 2014

New Orleans Saints 28 at Carolina Panthers 10: That’s right, the Saints won a road game for the first time in their last eight trips. It was an impressive win too, but then again being Cam Newton isn’t really that difficult anymore it seems. Newton had a horrible game, finishing with only 151 yards and an interception. The Saints defense looked fantastic. The real MVP of this game was Mark Ingram. With Ingram back on the field, the Saints are finally seeing some production from their run game.

philip rivers no more mvp talk 2014

San Diego Chargers 0 at Miami Dolphins 37: HAHAHA. HA. How did this even happen? Ryan Tannehill looked like the MVP candidate, not Philip Rivers. Rivers finished with 138 yards, three interceptions, and a lost fumble. The Chargers defense really didn’t do much either.

Jacksonville Jaguars 23 at Cincinnati Bengals 33: The Jaguars as a whole looked like a decent team. Blake Bortles wasn’t horrible, Allen Hurns looked terrific, and Toby Gerhart did well when he was asked to. Unfortunately for the Jags, the Bengals offense was too much to handle with A.J. Green back on the field. Jeremy Hill also filling in well for Giovani Bernard, rushing for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17 at Cleveland Browns 22: The Browns seem to be slowing reverting to their usual bad selves. Really, Tampa Bay could have won this game. They had 30 more yards of offense than the Browns, but they also had a few costly mistakes which ended up costing them this game. Brian Hoyer’s 300 yards looks good, but his two interceptions were very costly. Mike Glennon did even worse though. In fact, he did so bad that the Bucs are benching him next week. That takes a lot.

robert griffin iii washington redskins loses to vikings nfl 2014

Washington Redskins 26 at Minnesota Vikings 29: I don’t usually bet on games, but when I found out RGIII was starting I put my money on Minnesota. Griffin just isn’t good enough to be starting for this team. That being said, Griffin didn’t do terrible (although the Vikings aren’t exactly known for their defense). With 251 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, Griffin actually almost pulled off the victory. Most importantly, Griffin finished the game without having to be carted off the field.

nick foles hurt bulge out for season nfl 2014

Philadelphia Eagles 31 at Houston Texans 21: Nick Foles is injured, and the Texans are finally going to move past Ryan Fitzpatrick. It’s very sad when Mark Sanchez comes into the game and outplays you, but that’s what happened to Fitzpatrick in this one. Sanchez actually did better than Foles was doing, finishing with 202 yards and two touchdowns. Yes, he had two interceptions as well; but what did you expect?

New York Jets 10 at Kansas City Chiefs 24: Michael Vick got hurt. Big surprise there. Nothing can go right for the Jets this season. Vick was doing all right, but Matt Simms replaced him and could barely complete a pass. To be fair, Vick wouldn’t have been able to lead the team to a victory either. Kansas City is a vastly unrated team this season, and their defense has been holding up a lot better than it was earlier this season. In fact, the Jets couldn’t score a single point in the second half.

Arizona Cardinals 28 at Dallas Cowboys 17: The Cowboys have now dropped two in a row. Brandon Weeden did a horrible job, but Romo wouldn’t have done much better against the Cardinals outstanding defense. Why? DeMarco Murray was held to under 100 yards for the first time this season. With only 79 yards on 19 carries, Murray was unable to open up the passing game like he usually does. The only thing Romo would have done better would be actually connecting with Dez Bryant, something Weeden couldn’t do until the 4th quarter in garbage time.

St. Louis Rams 13 at San Francisco 49ers 10: Still not sure how, but the Rams always turn into Super Bowl Champions when it’s time to play the 49ers. The Rams defense was absolutely phenomenal in this game. The Niners really should have been able to win this game, but Colin Kaepernick fumbled inches from the goal line on the final play of the game. Anquan Boldin was really the only star for San Fran, totaling 93 yards and the one touchdown. The Rams could have scored much more, but Austin Davis didn’t really help out the defense.

Denver Broncos 21 at New England Patriots 43: If the Broncos want to make it back to the Super Bowl, they’ll need to get home field advantage. No one showed up except for Peyton Manning, but it’s hard to do much when your team drops basically everything they could. The Broncos receivers didn’t want to win, and the defense certainly didn’t want to win. At one point Manning was forging a comeback, and his pass hit Wes Welker in the chest, bounced up, and got intercepted. That sums up what Manning had to try and work with.

Oakland Raiders 24 at Seattle Seahawks 30: Well, here’s yet more proof that the Seahawks are not the Champions of last season. To beat the Raiders by six at home? Pathetic. It’s amazing to think that the Raiders actually would have won this game if D.J. Hayden hadn’t dropped an easy pick-six. As usual, Russell Wilson had to rely on his defense for everything. Wilson managed only 179 yards. That’s it. Against the Raiders.

Baltimore Ravens 23 at Pittsburgh Steelers 43: Apparently the Steelers traded for Peyton Manning recently, because Ben Roethlisberger has never shown this sort of ability before. Big Ben now has 12 touchdowns over the past two games, an NFL record. The Steelers had to win this game through the air, because LeGarrette Blount and Le’Veon Bell weren’t able to do much of anything on the ground. The Ravens did all they could, but Roethlisberger is just too much for any team to handle right now. Look out, New York.

Indianapolis Colts 40 at New York Giants 24: The Giants defense was fantastic in the first half (minus a horribly officiated series that ended in an unset defense giving Andrew Luck the easiest touchdown he’ll ever have). In the second half, however, they gave up after seeing the offense was incapable of anything. Biggest takeaway from this game is that Luck is vastly overrated this season. The only reason Luck’s numbers are so high is because the Colts are forcing him to throw on practically every down. Luck is going to shatter Matthew Stafford’s attempts record.

THE WALKING DEAD Slabtown Recap: Beth & Lollipops

walking dead beth slabtown season 5 episode 4 images

Only four more episodes of “The Walking Dead” before they take their winter break. Episode four of season five was called “Slabtown”, but could have been titled “AMC’s Creepy Version Of NBC’s ER”. With the groups splintering off at the end of last week’s show, I knew we were in for some different set up this week. I didn’t think it would be completely about Beth however. The girl has been gone for what seems like a couple years to me. I just assumed she was dead. Daryl didn’t seem to be holding out much hope, so why would any of us?

Beth awakes in a well lit hospital that seems to be civilized. We all know how that usually plays out in this show. A calm looking town can turn into a brutal dictatorship in a hurry, as we witnessed in Governorland. Beth is quickly acquainted with a cop named Dawn and Dr. Steven. The Doc appears to be a much nicer person than the uniformed lady cop, who lets Beth know immediately that she, as a newcomer, owes them. After all, they saved / abducted her when Beth and Daryl were in dire straights last season.

High Strung For the ‘greater good’

The hospital is surprisingly clean and appears normal considering what all has transpired since the zombie apocalypse got rolling. But the civilized facade of the place doesn’t last long as Beth meets ubercreeper, Gorman, another cop. He tells Beth that everything has a price, alluding to the fact that she better get some cash for her food, or prepare to be sexually assaulted by the corrupt policeman. This Gorman doesn’t appear to be that big a threat to anyone and it is a surprise that he has survived this long. Sure, he turns out to be a terrible human being, but he doesn’t seem like the type that would have thrived in this current state of the world.

The good doctor seems to be just that, as he befriends Beth. He even offers her some cooked guinea pig in exchange for nothing. He is just a kind guy from all appearances. He does take the time to show Beth why no one has tried to leave the hospital. They go down to the basement and Steven makes some noise to arouse the local zombie neighbors. It is another awful scene with “rotters” everywhere. I love how each new group has a new name for the undead. Perhaps some crew will eventually call them what they are, zombies. Maybe that is a politically incorrect term in their world…who knows.

Memories of Hershel’s leg

This episode goes back to the theme of “the nightmare being over” and how people will deal with each other then. This is the aspect of the show that I love. I know they have to bash in heads with heels of boots and find different tools to pierce the brains of the rotters. But I enjoy the philosophy theme. How would you trust any new group that you came across? Will people go right back to being civilized with laws and such if the zombies all perished overnight? Or would humans have become too brutal during the apocalypse to go back to the ways prior to the undead lurking around every corner? Dr. Steven makes the point about human beings needing to be more than animals while looking at the painting in his office. Unfortunately for these people, now is not the time to be better than animals. At least not on a daily basis. That will get you killed or turned into a rotter. Actually it will cause both to happen.

Just getting it wet for ya Beth…

Toward the end of the episode the creeper cop Gorman gets his rapist reward. He attempts to attack Beth only to be cracked in his dome with a glass vase. I told you I was amazed that he had made it this far in this brutal world. After getting cold cocked, police officer Gorman is savagely eaten by a female patient zombie that had gotten her arm amputated earlier in the show due to a bite. Officer Gorman may not have been a mainstay on “The Walking Dead”, but his repulsiveness to actual screen time ratio was off the charts. I was glad to see him go in a hurry.

beth kills gorman with zombie walking dead slabtown images

One of the most telling plot lines this week was the good doctor protecting his position in the group. He had Beth give a patient the wrong medicine and it ended the man’s life. It turns out the guy was a doctor himself and Steven wanted to remain vital in the hospital. Having another MD around would have put him at risk had he pissed off Dawn at the wrong moment. It is hard to say he did the right thing…Ok, it was the wrong thing. He killed another man who was defenseless. However, if the goal is to stay alive, then he did what he had to do. Just bad timing for the guy who got wheeled into the worst / best medical facility in Atlanta.

walking dead beth season 4 talking to doctor recap images 2014

The end of the episode sees Beth and her new BFF Noah try and make a getaway. It is a poorly thought out plan from the start of the decent down an elevator shaft meant for feeding the rotters. Noah manages to fall and badly injure his leg but they keep moving. There are some cool shots, gunshots that is, in the dark as they have to cap a few walkers on their way out of the hospital. This was one of the better scenes I have witnessed lately on the show. They make it outside only to be surrounded by more walkers, which Beth and Noah manage to fend off. But then the remaining police officers from the building manage to apprehend Beth. Her buddy Noah escapes through a chained gate….dude was pretty skinny. He had a bad limp when he went out of sight so I’m not sure how long this guy is going to make it on the outside. If I had to guess, I would say he is being eaten as I type.

walking dead beth noah slabtown episode recap images

Beth gets dragged back into Grady Memorial Hospital for her trouble. There she gets more medical work on her face from Dr. Steven. I hope she has a low deductible on her medical insurance. She has been at this place about one day and received four hours of medical care. After walking into the hallway, Beth sees one of her old crew being wheeled in on a cart, out cold. Carol, the death dealer, has been rescucaptured by the white cross folks.

Look for a new group to be featured next week. It might take two weeks to get back to the Beth plot. Also, do you think that Carol has faked her way into the hospital or did she ‘savenapped’ like Beth?

SURVIVOR SAN JUAN DEL SUR Episode 6 Recap

Though Survivor is far from being a new reality show you may have to remind the current season’s contestants, because they don’t seem to know how the game needs to be played. Let’s assume anyone who has the balls to send in an audition tape to try and get a spot on Survivor has had the sense to watch it over the years so they not only know what to do, but what to expect.

This season’s batch of contestants makes you wonder how they ended up on the show in the first place, because it doesn’t seem as if most of them have even followed the show; especially Keith. The whole blood vs water twist the producers threw in this season was supposed to spice up the show. Unfortunately just because your blood may be a diehard Survivor follower, it doesn’t mean you are. Now I don’t know about anyone else but if I was given the opportunity to not only be a contestant on the show, but to have a blood relative go through the experience with me, I would pick one who has watched and learned all these years to see just how the game is played.

Dale’s attempt at doing damage control looks like it’s either going to pay off for him well or tank horribly…and I have a feeling for the sake of ratings producers would rather see it tank. You know the season is going bad when, for only the second time in the show’s history, Jeff Probst has to offer contestants a bail out. When the governments bailed the banks out in the recent past, things looked less bleak than they do for this crop of Survivor contestants.

survivor dale fake idol for john bulge images 2014

Probst’s declaration that the contestants needed a bail out two weeks into the show doesn’t bode well for the rest of the season, unless you  gain joy from watching grown men and women fall flat on their faces in attempt to prove they can survive conditions all these other wussies can’t.

One of the keys to surviving Survivor is determining when to trade one thing you need for another thing you need more. Some not-so-great choices were made when Probst announced that both tribes could pick one member to go to head to head with each other. Putting a former cheerleader and a dancer up against each other should have made for a pretty good competition. Since good is a relative term, you’d need to watch and draw your own conclusions as to whether the head-to-head was compelling TV or just an excuse to laugh at people that are in a situation most of us wouldn’t even put down our remote control, set the bowl of popcorn on the coffee table and even contemplate subjecting ourselves to.

It started to get sticky when Reed was given a golden opportunity to get rid of whichever tribe mate he considered to be the biggest threat to him winning the game. Lacking the foresight to actually make a smart decision he ended up targeting Julie in (what he wants you to believe) is a noble and gentlemanly attempt to do what is best for her; send her into a situation where she can prove to her boyfriend that she doesn’t need to be pampered like a lady in order to survive; she can rough it with the best of them.

However, Natalie, not content to sit idly by and watch someone else get exiled, bravely stepped in and offered to take Julie’s place. I think it’s pretty safe to say that Natalie didn’t volunteer for this in order to spare Julie. Natalie did it because she is either up to something or wants to trick her fellow contestants into thinking she is. It turns out that by heading to Exile Island Natalie did manage to get a clue from Baylor. Only time will tell how this plays out for everyone involved.

Julie seems to be in island unto herself as for all her efforts to make herself seem like a tough female she spends a decent amount of time telling the other contestants that she didn’t know if she was going to make it through an entire night of undesirable weather after her tribe had to give up their tarp just to be able to receive enough sustenance to try and crawl their way to the top of the Survivor food chain. Interestingly enough Julie received comfort from the one tribe member who basically made his goal to eliminate her boyfriend from the competition. This would make most decent girlfriends wary of him…but not our Julie.

survivor san juan del sur gay josh canfield reed kelly love problems 2014

Reed and Josh are stirring up trouble for themselves by acting more like they are guests aboard the Love Boat than contestants on a show where you have to eat things no human being should have to eat, just to survive long enough to at least hold onto a glimmer of hope that you might emerge as the winner at the end of this season. And Jeremy is using the couple’s PDAs to work his own strategy in this game.

He is not liking that Reed and Josh are drawing attention simply because they are a couple who is acting like a couple; this is something that I guess Survivor contestants don’t really expect from their fellow contestants. It will be interesting to see whether or not Reed and Josh’s love affair will result in one or both of them being booted off the show by everyone else. When a decent number of the contestants are single and you are parading around with the love of your life, you are liable to make some enemies.

Next week’s impending merge could turn allies into enemies or enemies into allies. At this point the ratio of singles vs couples is 4 to 8. This could create an interesting dynamic as we move forward in the season. Check back next week to see who chokes and who moves promptly ahead.

NFL Week 9 Matchups To Watch 2014

nfl 2015 logo image

Peyton Manning’s matchup against the New England Patriots this weekend is not the only game, but it’s the only one anyone cares about. Nonetheless, here’s some other stuff you may want to watch this week:

Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: It’s no secret that these two teams hate each other. This is one of the best rivalries in NFL history, and it’s fueled almost completely by sheer hatred. This game is made even better now, because with both teams sitting at 5-3 this game could have huge implications in the AFC North division. The Ravens have been more of a little brother to the Steelers for the past decade despite their Super Bowl championship two years ago. The Ravens chances were looking really good, but the last few weeks Ben Roethlisberger has played out of his mind. The Ravens will have to find some way to stop Big Ben if they want any chance in this rivalry.

Dez Bryant vs. the Arizona Cardinals secondary: The Dallas Cowboys are coming off an embarrassing home loss to the Washington Redskins, but they have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend in front of their home crowd against one of the better teams in the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals. It’s still unclear whether or not Tony Romo will be playing Sunday, and if he’s out he will be replaced by Brandon Weeden who’s honestly perfectly capable of playing as well as Romo. The big matchup in this game, however, will be Dez Bryant against the Cardinals secondary. The Cardinals have done fantastic this season on defense; but this could easily be their second loss if they aren’t careful. The Cardinals will have to be able to stop Bryant, Jason Witten, and especially DeMarco Murray if they want to keep their one-loss record.

Peyton Manning vs. the New England Patriots: I know I already mentioned this one, but it’s so important I just had to talk about it some more. The Peyton Manning-New England Patriots matchup has been fantastic since his Indianapolis Colts days. Manning is playing as well as ever, but the Patriots are one of the toughest matchups he has this season. The Pats have one of if not the best defense in the league this season. A secondary of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner is just not fair. Manning will have to find some way to break this down, but there is no doubt that he will. On top of that, the Broncos defense will have to step up. Rob Gronkowski is running wild lately and making Tom Brady look good. The Broncos will either have to find a way to stop Gronk (impossible) or stop Brady (as many teams have shown this season, not that difficult). This game will probably come down to whether or DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller can put pressure on Brady. This may be the last time we see this matchup. Enjoy it.

Ready For Another Peyton Manning Vs Tom Brady Playoff Matchup? It’s Coming

tom brady peyton manning playoff matchup for 2015 nfl

It is entirely possible that we could see Manning versus Brady, round 17, in the 2014 playoffs. The Patriots are on track and super hot. The Broncos look even better than they did in 2013 with a stout defense to help the offense out. The Steelers are the only AFC team that is on a strong enough run to stop a repeat of last year’s AFC Title game.

After a slow start that had folks talking about Tom Brady as if he were one nail short of being in a football coffin, the Patriots have looked unstoppable on offense. Their weak receiving corp now looks battle ready each week. Not to mention their surgically repaired Gronkenstein, who is running roughshod over defenders once again. I hope New England fans realize how lucky they are to have had yearly success for the past decade plus. As a Falcons fan, I am truly envious and very bitter.

The Broncos looked like the best team in the NFL, and may still be just that. But playing in Foxboro in week nine did not enhance their image. They got waxed by Brady’s crew 43-21. That game made the series between the two epic quarterbacks 11-5 in favor of Tom Brady. People love to use the boxing analogy when talking about the long history of this QB battle. But if this were a fight, Manning would have been carried out on a gurney several rounds ago. The alleged “best regular season quarterback in history” has been no match for Tom Brady over the years. If the two meet in the playoffs again this year, the home field could be the deciding factor. I would take Manning in Denver and Brady in Foxboro. The teams sit with two losses each with the tie breaker going to the Patriots via the beatdown administered to the Orange Crush last week.

Even though Brady has dominated the series with Manning, he can’t get all the credit. The series should read, “Manning five wins to Brady / Belichick 11 wins. Brady has had the benefit of a defensive genius on his sideline to stop his rival. Peyton has had good coaches, but not a guy like Belichick who crafted a defensive game plan for Super Bowl XXV that sits in the Hall OF Fame. Peyton Manning is clearly one of the best to ever call an audible, but he has been involved in a WWE-like handicap match each time he suited up against the New England Patriots. Not only does Brady have his coach building barriers to Manning, Brady also gets the Belichick insight on how to attack the defense that is wearing the same uniform as Peyton. It has been a two on one fight since the first time these two greats have met on the field.

Despite the lopsided rivalry between the Pats QB and the Broncos leader, another playoff game involving the two would be something to see. The ratings would be better than any other game besides the Super Bowl obviously. Patriots fans want to see their guy rub it in a little more to Manning. While Manning fans will be holding their breathe hoping that their guy can get a rare win against the evil Brady and Belichick combo. General football fans that don’t have a favorite get the best of both worlds without the nervousness of the outcome. We can enjoy a contest that pits two all time greats against each other. Correction….two all time greats against another all time great.

Marcus Lattimore: What Aspiring Footballers Can Learn From His Story

Marcus Lattimore nfl cautionary tale

Marcus Lattimore is giving up the game of football for good. One of South Carolina’s greatest players ever has announced his retirement from the NFL. He just couldn’t make his way back to pro form after the last terrible knee injury he received in college.

He never played a down for San Francisco, yet the team will not seek reimbursement for the $350K signing bonus given to the young man. Lattimore plans to return to South Carolina to finish up his degree. He was a thundering runner with huge NFL potential when his leg got mangled in 2012 in a game versus Tennessee. The Niners had drafted the runner in the fourth round the following year in hopes that he could make a comeback despite the severe knee damage he suffered as a Gamecock.

What can young football players starting out in high school football learn from this short lived pro football career? Be a quarterback or receiver. Better yet, be the best field goal kicker in your state. Even better, play baseball. Be anything but a running back. That is the most brutal position to play over the long haul. If you manage to avoid nasty leg injuries like the one that effectively ended Lattimore’s NFL dreams, there is always the possible brain damage that comes later. I love the game of football obviously, but I would steer any young man away from being a running back. I know it is a good way to get into college for that “free” education, but there are other ways for that to happen. And for those guys with NFL aspirations, that is getting more gloomy each year. The passing game is taking over bigger chunks of offenses every season and rushers are not seen as being as valuable as they once were. The fact that running backs are more likely to get hurt also makes NFL franchises under pay these backs in today’s NFL.

The NFL is a cold hard business, but 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was sincere in his comments about Marcus Lattimore. The hard nosed coach surely appreciated what the young man did in his efforts to get back on the football field. But the fact remains that Harbaugh has to keep moving as his team gets ready for the next opponent. There was a short presser where he answered a few questions about Lattimore and that was the end of it. The team moves forward and the player is left to start his new life in a different direction.

One star college player should take note of this story and that is Todd Gurley of Georgia. The suspended running back will have the “opportunity” to come back for the last few games of this season after getting punished by the corrupt NCAA. UGA went along spinelessly to keep the hammer of the NCAA from dropping harder on them in the future. So the best runner in the country has sat out for the past few weeks to think about his “crime” of signing is own name. Gurley should not play another down for the Georgia Bulldogs. There is nothing for him to gain. There is only the possibility of ending up like Marcus Lattimore, a broken athlete. Why should Todd Gurley put his career on the line for a school that would not risk much to defend him?

Gurley is just one of many college running backs that need to carefully think about the Lattimore story. Sure, he did make some money from pro football, but look what it cost him. He will have leg trouble forever most likely. He was one of the best of the past ten years and now he is done and headed back to school. He did a lot for his university and he should have every opportunity to use that network to help him in whatever career he chooses. That is the bright side of a dark story I guess. There will be fewer and fewer silver linings for the running back position going forward though.

NFL Week 9 Preview 2014

nfl 2015 logo image

Peyton Manning faces off against the New England Patriots this weekend for what could possibly be the last time in his glorious career. The Manning-Tom Brady has been fantastic, so this game is a definite can’t miss. Here’s the rest of Week 9:

San Diego Chargers at Miami Dolphins: Miami won last week by capitalizing on every turnover that Blake Bortles committed. In fact, the Jaguars looked better on offense than the Dolphins. The Chargers will not make those mistakes on offense. It’s going to be a long day for Dolphins fans.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals don’t lose at home, and the Jaguars don’t win anywhere. You do the math. Bortles threw two pick-sixes against the Dolphins, so there’s no telling what he’ll do against a good defense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cleveland Browns: The Browns have looked really bad recently, which is especially sad because they played the Jaguars and Raiders. This game against Bucs rounds out three in a row against the worst three teams in the league. This game could be close, but the Browns should be able to pull it out. If not expect chants of “Johnny” from the home crowd.

Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings: If Colt McCoy was started I’d be a lot more likely to say that the Redskins could pull out this victory. Instead, the Redskins are playing Robert Griffin III (at least until he inevitably breaks something). Let’s see who can suck less, Griffin or Teddy Bridgewater. Probably Teddy because he’s at home.

Philadelphia Eagles at Houston Texans: The Eagles are a good team, and the Texans still have not made the jump past average. It’s that simple. Ryan Fitzpatrick is still not ready to be able to win against good teams like the Eagles. Nick Foles and company will have no problem getting it done.

New York Jets at Kansas City Chiefs: Michael Vick is starting for the Jets, but that’s only a slight improvement over Geno Smith. Smith throws three interceptions a game, but Vick fumbles three times a game. Pick your poison. The Chiefs are a good team at home, so they should have no problem taking down the struggling Jets.

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys lost at home to the Redskins, and Tony Romo got knocked out of the game with a blow to his bad back. Now the Cardinals are coming to town, and they are much better than the Redskins. Here’s the big test for Dallas—can they bounce back from an embarrassing loss to beat a good team?

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers: The Rams have had their fair share of struggles this season, but they always seem to do best against the 49ers. The Rams barely lost in their first matchup, so they should be able to keep this one close as well. As long as Colin Kaepernick does not screw up, the Niners should be able to pull out the win at home.

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots: The Patriots don’t usually lose at home, but this game should be different. The Broncos are an amazing team, and if they can stop Rob Gronkowski they can stop the Patriots. The Broncos defense will be the key factor in this game. If they can stop Gronk, the Broncos win. If Gronk runs wild like he did last week, the Patriots will pull of the upset.

Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks: The Raiders still haven’t won a game, and I would be absolutely shocked if they pulled off an upset over the Seahawks in Seattle. Derek Carr is still not doing well, but he’s been able to compete the past few weeks. The Raiders may be able to prevent themselves from getting blow out with a touchdown in garbage time.

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers: This is the second best rivalry game this weekend behind Peyton versus the Patriots. This rivalry is fueled by the teams’ sheer hatred of each other. The Steelers should be able to pull this one out at home, especially if Ben Roethlisberger continues to play like he has been recently. The Ravens will have a hard time overcoming the crowd in this game.

Indianapolis Colts at New York Giants: The Colts are good, but the Giants are motivated. Tom Coughlin is a great pump-up artist, and the Giants have really rallied around him for support since the injury to Victor Cruz. The Giants should be able to pull off the upset, especially at home.

NFL Week 8 Review 2014

nfl 2015 logo image

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new semi-professional football league called the FXFL. To give you a feel for how this league is, Jordan Jefferson and Tahj Boyd are starting quarterbacks. I laughed too. Go Omaha Mammoths!…anyways, here’s some good football:

San Diego Chargers 21 at Denver Broncos 35: The Broncos defense managed to keep this game pretty close, but the bottom line is Peyton Manning looked fantastic and Philip Rivers looked like a whiny kid. He complained about everything, mainly towards his offensive coordinator for running the ball too much when it was not working at all in the first half. Manning had another three touchdowns, all to Emmanuel Sanders. Rivers had two interceptions, but to be fair one of them was not his fault. Antonio Gates and Keenan Allen also had huge games.

Detroit Lions 22 at Atlanta Falcons 21: I’ve never seen poor clock management work out in a team’s favor until now. Matt Prater missed from 43 yards, but it was blown dead by Delay of Game. He then nailed it from 48. Poor Falcons. They can’t catch a break on the road, at home, or in a different country. Matt Ryan was good in the first half, but he left his talent in the locker room. Falcons fans can expect some changes soon, most likely at the head coach position the way the season has gone so far.

Minnesota Vikings 19 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13: This was a very boring game. Teddy Bridgewater is clearly all hype, and the Atlanta game was a complete fluke. However, Anthony Barr made his first major impact which was pretty awesome to watch. Barr stripped Austin Seferian-Jenkins in overtime and then returned it for the game-winning touchdown. Bridgewater did look good at the end of the game however: his game-tying drive was very well done with a lot of short passes to Greg Jennings to get into field-goal range. The Bucs continue to be bad.

Chicago Bears 23 at New England Patriots 51: This was basically the Bears versus Rob Gronkowski. With 149 and three touchdowns he opened up the field for everyone else and made Tom Brady look good for once this season. Jay Cutler was trash again this week picking up most of his yardage in garbage time. This game basically doesn’t matter however, because everyone is looking forward to next week’s matchup between the Broncos and Patriots.

St. Louis Rams 7 at Kansas City Chiefs 34: Austin Davis drove the team down the field, and the Rams took a quick 7-0 lead. After that, three offensive lineman got injured, and it was all downhill from there. Davis finished with only 160 yards, the one touchdown, and an interception. The special teams that helped them upset the Seahawks cost them the game this week. Knile Davis’s 99 yard kickoff return touchdown was pretty much the nail in the coffin for the Rams this week.

Seattle Seahawks 13 at Carolina Panthers 9: Neither team played overly good defense, but both quarterbacks looked really bad. Cam Newton had a horrible second half, and until the final drive Russell Wilson looked as horrible as he usually does on the road. Wilson finished with only 199 yards, one touchdown, an interception, and several off-target passes. Wilson was missing wide open receivers. Both of these teams will need to get it together on offense if they want to win their respective divisions again this season.

Buffalo Bills 43 at New York Jets 23: The Jets couldn’t beat the Bills, so Rex Ryan can kiss his head coaching career goodbye. Maybe he’ll get another chance someday. Geno Smith had three interceptions in the first quarter, so Jets fans got to see a lot of their brand new starting quarterback, Michael Vick. Vick wasn’t much better. In fact, he was only a little better because he ran the ball more. The Jets were supposed to be a run first offense based around Chris Ivory, but that seems to have fallen through. A lot of Jets coaches can start packing their belongings.

Miami Dolphins 27 at Jacksonville Jaguars 13: The Jaguars dominated this game. That’s right. The defense held Miami to 56 yards in the first half and didn’t give up a first down until four minutes before halftime. The Jags offense however had two pick-sixes and the special teams allowed a punt to be blocked. They lost in typical Jags fashion. Blake Bortles didn’t even look like a college quarterback never mind a start in the NFL. Three total turnovers including the two picks that were returned. Just sad.

Houston Texans 30 at Tennessee Titans 16: Arian Foster and J.J. Watt are pretty much the only reason the Texans have won a game this season. Watt is still unstoppable, making for a horrible first career start for Zach Mettenberger, and Foster absolutely tore apart the Titans already weak defense. Mettenberger finished with 299 yards, but most of that was from the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach. Maybe he’ll be able to do better after a bye week without Watt strip-sacking him. Foster’s 151 yards was the real game-sealer for the Texans on offense.

Baltimore Ravens 24 at Cincinnati Bengals 27: Even with A.J. Green out, Andy Dalton managed to do pretty good. He finished with 266 yards, but most of his mistakes (an interception and a lost fumble) came in the fourth quarter giving Bengals fans a sequence of heart attacks. Dalton did put together a game winning drive however. Dalton also wasn’t the worst quarterback on the field for once: Joe Flacco wins that honor after only 195 yards and two interceptions.

Philadelphia Eagles 20 at Arizona Cardinals 24: This was a great game if you like a lot of offense and a lot of penalties. With a combined 921 yards of total offense and over 20 penalties there was never a dull moment. The Eagles definitely blew this game from a coaching stand point. Nick Foles attempted 62 passes, whereas LeSean McCoy only got 21 carries. Not a winning combination for the Eagles clearly. Carson Palmer wasn’t fantastic, but a win is a win. The Cardinals certainly proved they are one of the best teams in the league with this victory.

Indianapolis Colts 34 at Pittsburgh Steelers 51: Wow. How ‘bout them Steelers? Ben Roethlisberger was unstoppable. 40-of-49, 522 yards, and six touchdowns. Andrew Luck had some pretty big numbers to, but not Big Ben big. Luck finished with 400 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Roethlisberger’s incredible performance is 100 percent the reason for the Steelers sizable victory.

Oakland Raiders 13 at Cleveland Browns 23: If the Raiders couldn’t beat the Browns they may actually go 0-16. Even the Jaguars beat the Browns. The Raiders looked all-around horrible. They tried incorporating Matt Schaub in the offense for varies trick plays all of which failed miserably. The Browns on the other hand couldn’t get the running game going, and as a result struggled to really get anything going offensively. They finished with only 39 total rushing yards. If the Browns want to make a series attempt at a Wild Card they’ll need to start playing like it.

Green Bay Packers 23 at New Orleans Saints 44: Everyone expect a shootout, but we got a blowout. The Saints remember who they were at home, and they showed the Packers that they’re still a legitimate team. Aaron Rodgers seemed to tweak his hamstring, and it certainly gave the Saints defense some confidence. This was the Saints best defensive game of the season. Unfortunately, the Saints will have to hope the Panthers continue to tank if they want to win the division at 8-8 (8-0 at home, 0-8 on the road).

Washington Redskins 20 at Dallas Cowboys 17: So how ‘bout them Cowboys? They blew it. Tony Romo looked horrible before and after he hurt his back. In fact, he got outplayed by Colt McCoy of all people. McCoy had 299 yards and an interception, but he seemed to have a great grasp on controlling the flow of the game. Don’t be surprised if McCoy gets to start over Robert Griffin III by the end of the season.

NFL Teams Bottoming Out Halfway Through 2014 Season

nfl trade deadline 2014

It has to be really bad for an NFL team to be at the bottom of the pile in 2014. After all, this league is built to make parity a priority. And most teams do well in this system. A franchise can go from bad to decent quickly and in some cases, worst to first is not impossible. For a few teams at this point in the 2014 season, most hope is lost. Correction, all hope.

There are four teams that I will make a case for their fans to find another team. I could go as far as six teams but I want to pick on the worst of the worst. Also, I would have to include my Atlanta Falcons if I went six deep on the no hope chart. And I can’t stand the thought of choosing another bandwagon this early in the season again this year. In truth I am on the Broncos wagon starting right now.

The four teams that fans need to forget about are the Jets, Jaguars, Bucs, and certainly the Raiders. In hopeless situations like this, it would be best for fans to pretend their team never existed. Or perhaps make up a story in their own heads about the owner stealing the team in the middle of the night, ala Art Model in Cleveland. Whatever gets you through the night. Alcohol helps as well.

Starting with Tampa Bay, they can have hope again soon. After this season ends, they still have a good head coach. I think Lovie Smith will do a good job for this team eventually, but this year is a loss. Those who predicted he would come in and help a talented team get over the hump, just overestimated the talent. Or perhaps things will just take longer to gel with the new staff and players. Regardless, this was not the year of the Bucs. Tampa fans, you still live in a nice city. Take solace in that.

Jacksonville fans will have to be patient with their new quarterback. Blake Bortles may or may not be the real deal. Experts seem to believe he is, but they have no way of knowing. He is going through the normal rookie struggles right now. But those struggles may turn into good experience down the line. Peyton didn’t exactly go interception free in his first couple of seasons. The good news is that Jag fans can skip the final eight games of the year. That will give them about 28 extra hours for family time, car washing, or gardening.

The Jets are at a very low point in their history. Gone are the trips to the AFC title game. Gone is Rex Ryan after this year. Hell, the departed butt fumbler would even be welcomed back in lieu of the ten picks that Geno Smith has hand delivered so far. The Jets are not far removed from being a playoff team just a few years back. As fast as teams can get good, the Jets are a prime example of that parity formula working in reverse. The good news for Jets fans is that the NBA is starting up, so they should focus on the Knicks. Actually that is as bad as being a Jets fan.

Last and certainly least, we come to the Raiders. This no good excuse for an NFL franchise has made a mockery out of a once proud team. It is almost as if the ownership is trying to prove to the NFL that a team can stay at the bottom every single year even with the league custom made to give all teams a chance to get better asap. Either that or they are trying to set a record for firing the most coaches in the history of football, on any level. I would suggest that Raiders fans find another team to pull for, but that would be pointless. No other team would be willing to take on that gaggle of freaks that adorns the Oakland Coliseum.
