NCAA ‘March Madness’ Tournament Preview 2015

ncaa march madness preview images 2015

It is finally upon us. March Madness is set to begin this Tuesday with the playing of the First Four and will continue through the end of the month and end with the national championship game from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on April 6. After the final conference tournaments finished up on Sunday, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee finally announced the coveted field of 68. Here’s a look at the 2015 tourney.

No Surprise, Kentucky Is Overall No. 1 Seed

After a magical unbeaten regular season, top-ranked Kentucky marched through the competition at the SEC tournament defeating Arkansas 78-63 in the final to enter the NCAA tournament at 34-0. As a result, head coach John Calipari’s Wildcats were rewarded with the tourney’s No. 1 overall seed. Kentucky is young, experienced, athletic, and is favored to win this year’s title. The Wildcats, the top seed in the Midwest Region, could become the first team since Indiana in 1976 to go unbeaten and win the national championship. Kentucky will face the winner of Hampton and Manhattan in the second round on Thursday, March 19. The Wildcats should be able to make it through the top half of the Midwest bracket and would face the most resistance from either No. 2 Kansas or No. 3 Notre Dame.

Wisconsin Earns No. 1 Seed

After playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules and winding up 31-3, the Wisconsin Badgers were rewarded with a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament by the selection committee. Most experts believe that the Badgers represent the toughest test for top-ranked Kentucky. Head coach Bo Ryan’s squad won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and head into the NCAA tourney on a six-game win streak. Two of the Badgers losses were to Maryland, a fourth seed in the Midwest Region, and Duke, the top seed in the South Region. Wisconsin made it to last year’s Final Four only to fall to Kentucky in the semifinals. If the two teams can make it through their brackets unscathed, they would once again meet in the national semifinals.

Duke And Villanova Earn Other No. 1 Seeds

They did not win the ACC regular season championship nor did they win the conference tournament, still Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski are a No. 1 seed in this year’s NCAA tourney. The second-ranked Blue Devils lost to conference tournament champion Notre Dame, 74-64, in the semifinals. Duke enjoyed a tremendous season going 29-4 overall, 15-3 in conference play. They beat Michigan State and Wisconsin early in the season and beat five more ranked opponents along the way.

In the Big East, Villanova, like Wisconsin, won both the regular season and conference tournament titles. The Wildcats will be the top seed in the East Region where they will have to deal with No. 2 seed Virginia. They may also have to deal with a variety of potential trouble spots. Getting to the Sweet Sixteen will be a challenge as Villanova would have to face LSU or N.C. State, either of which is capable of pulling the upset. The bottom of the bracket has Michigan State as well as No. 2 seed Virginia, the nation’s best defensive team.

The First Four

The tourney gets underway on Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, with two games from the University of Dayton Arena on the campus of the University of Dayton. Manhattan and Hampton will face each other for the right to play No. 1 Kentucky in the Midwest Region and BYU plays Mississippi for the 11th seed in the West and a shot at sixth seeded Xavier. On Wednesday, March 18, North Florida, in its first tournament ever, will play Robert Morris for a chance at Duke and then Dayton will have a serious home-court advantage when it takes on Boise State. The winner takes on Providence in the East Region.

Sleepers That Could Challenge For A Title

They don’t call them the comeback kids for nothing. Iowa State, the Big 12 Conference champion, has won each of its last five games in dramatic fashion. They trailed by 10 points or more in each contest and fought back to win them all, including the Big 12 title game. The Cyclones trailed Kansas by 17 at one point in the game. Head coach Fred Hoiberg’s squad received a No. 3 seed in the East Region and has the talent to make it to the Final Four.

In East Region, Michigan State, which lost to Wisconsin in the Big Ten tournament final, received a No. 7 seed. They would face a very good Virginia team in the Third Round, but with the play of Denzel Valentine lately, head coach Tom Izzo’s Spartans could be the surprise of this year’s tournament.

The same could be said of third seeded Notre Dame, which won the ACC tournament title. The Irish are hot coming off victories over No. 16 Louisville, No. 2 Duke, and No. 19 North Carolina over the past two weeks. Notre Dame matches up well with second seed Kansas and with a perfect game may be able to take down Kentucky.

Charles Oakley: NBA has “more Bad Games than Good Games these Days”

0

charles oakley not happy with current nba games 2015

Charles Oakley was honored by the Toronto Raptors on Friday March 13th during their game against the Miami Heat. Oakley, who played for the Raptors, Bulls, Knicks, Wizards, and Rockets during his two decades in the NBA had his bobblehead handed out to the first 5,000 fans in attendance at the Raptors game.

That’s not the big news—the big news came from Oakley’s comments about the state of the NBA today:

“Who do I like watching?” said Oakley. “It’s hard to watch. I don’t know, it’s just, it’s a different game. It’s some good games and a lot of bad games. More bad games than good games these days.”

Oakley was definitely a tough player back in his time, but his brief stint as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats from 2010-2011 showed him just how much the game has changed:

“Everybody says the game has changed, instead of talking about the guys I got a chance to see them first hand. It was kind of bad. The mind is not—you don’t have to be strong to play this game no more. I don’t know what it is. They just roll you out there like a basketball. That’s why…you see the same teams in the finals or winning 55 games. Strong teams, strong-minded coach. Just the players, they don’t think it, they don’t know how to play together. So that’s one of the things I see the weakness is: Communication. The guys don’t love the game. They play the game, but they don’t play with their heart.”

Maybe Oakley just got tired of seeing the Heat in the NBA Finals every season from 2010 to 2014, or maybe he is legitimately afraid for the future of the game. It is weird to see big men like Chicago Bulls center Pau Gasol routinely criticized for not being tough enough, but maybe that’s just what the game has come to.

Oakley sure never had a problem being aggressive, nor did greats like Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon. Maybe the NBA just needs another dominant center. Or maybe Oakley is just mad that at 51 he can’t keep up with the younger generation of players.

Either way, in Oakley’s mind, something needs to change.

New Orleans Saints Take on a New Look for 2015 NFL Season

new orleans saints taking on new look for 2015 nfl season

The New Orleans Saints sent shock waves through the NFL at the beginning of the league’s new year with an insane blockbuster trade: Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham and a 4th round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks for center Max Unger and a 1st round pick.

The trade surfaced all kinds of questions about what’s going on inside the franchise: Is Mickey Loomis crazy? Is the Sean Payton-Drew Brees Super Bowl window closed in New Orleans? IS anyone on the roster safe? Why would the Saints want the Seahawks center instead of one of their high-profile defensive stars?

Well, now that everyone has had some time to calm down, Payton and Loomis’s plan is starting to become a little clearer. No, Loomis didn’t lose his mind. There is a method to his madness.

The Saints are trying to change their offensive style all together. For about nine years now, quarterback Drew Brees and a high-powered passing attack has been the Saints offense. The combination of head coach Sean Payton and Brees has been an absolute nightmare for secondaries, and it even brought a Super Bowl back to New Orleans after the 2009 season. Well, 2014 didn’t go so well. A 7-9 finish and an offense that routinely failed to get a first down made it clear that something needed to change if the Saints want to win another Super Bowl before Brees retires.

As a result, general manager Mickey Loomis stepped up and decided to allocate some of the offensive fire-power and receiving talent the Saints have to improving the run game and the defense. Thus, the Graham trade—the Saints lose one of their best receivers and one of the best tight ends in the game; but they bring in arguably the league’s best run-blocking center.

The Saints also moved wide receiver Kenny Stills to the Miami Dolphins. The Saints drafted the easily-replaceable wideout in the 5th round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and two years later the Saints get a 3rd round pick and some depth at the linebacker position in return from the Dolphins.

The Saints also made some big moves in the backfield, resigning former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram to a four-year deal, and bringing in former Buffalo Bills 9th overall pick C.J. Spiller. The former Clemson superstar broke onto the scene in 2012 with 1,244 yards and six touchdowns; however, nagging injuries have kept him from reaching those numbers the past two seasons.

Regardless of his past two seasons, Spiller is an immediate improvement to the Saints run-game. The Saints now have their most talented backfield since 2006 when Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush came together to bring the Saints from 3-13 in 2005 to 10-6 and an NFC Championship Game appearance. With Ingram taking McAllister’s between-the-tackles rushing role and Spiller mirroring Bush’s edge rushing and screen passing role, the Saints may finally find a nice offensive balance between rushing and passing.

The Saints tactics are not new—in fact, they are basically using the same blueprint the Dallas Cowboys did this past season. By keeping the ball out of Tony Romo’s hands as much as possible, the Cowboys propelled themselves to a 12-4 record in 2014.

Fortunately for the Saints, Drew Brees is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league; and a guy they know they can rely on at the end of games. However, Brees is 36 years old; so at the end of the day if the Saints can win without Brees have to throw the ball 40 times per game, they can keep their superstar around a lot longer.

Expect big things, just with a different look, from the New Orleans Saints in 2015.

Frank Gore & Andre Johnson Join Forces again with Indianapolis Colts

0

frank gore with andre johnson return with indianpolis colts nfl 2015

The Indianapolis Colts made news recently when they picked up both running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Andre Johnson in free agency.

The former 49ers running back Gore was actually planning on signing with the Philadelphia Eagles; but after seeing all the changes that head coach Chip Kelly was making to the roster, he decided he didn’t want to be a part of the franchise. As for Johnson, the best offensive player in the franchise’s short history was left out to dry by the team this offseason. Johnson was told that he was getting to old and he would not start this coming season. This would be fine, if not for the fact that Johnson is still playing at a pretty high level, leading the offense, and the best receiver on the roster.

Well, the former University of Miami teammates are joining forces once again, this time with the Colts. So now the question is, how much can Gore and Johnson bring to the already high-powered Colts offense? After all, Gore is 31 years old, and Johnson is 33. That’s pretty old for a running back and wide receiver.

Despite their ages, the Colts signed each player to a three-year contract—$12 million for Gore and $21 million for Johnson—so clearly Indianapolis is aware of what these two are capable of. The Colts may have finished third in overall offense in 2014, but they have holes that Gore and Johnson can fill perfectly.

The Colts had basically no rushing presence last year due to both Trent Richardson’s struggles and the Colts tendency to only pass the ball. There’s a reason Andrew Luck’s stats are so inflated—they don’t run. At the same time, it’s hard to blame them when the team’s leading rusher was Richardson with 519 total yards on 3.3 yards per carry. If the Colts had a run game, maybe they could have scored more than seven points against the New England Patriots No. 1 overall defense in the AFC Championship Game.

In comes Frank Gore, the 49ers all-time leading rusher. With over 11,000 yards in his career, and over 1,000 yards in eight of his last nine seasons, Gore is just what the Colts need. With Gore in the backfield, the Colts can start to incorporate some balance into their offensive play calling.

The Colts also really lucked out picking up Andre Johnson. After releasing Reggie Wayne, the Colts needed to bring in some veteran leadership for the offense, some one that knows how to lead a team from the wide receiver position. Johnson brings just that. Sure, Johnson is coming off of an injury-nagged 2014 season; but he is still able to perform. Johnson had over 3,000 receiving yards between 2012 and 2013, so clearly his age won’t pose a problem. Also, Johnson is leaving a team with quarterback issues for a team with a reliable starter in Luck.

The other thing that Gore and Johnson can bring over their three years with the Colts is some know-how at their respective positions. Gore and Johnson have played at a very high level for a long period of time, so they would have no problem showing some young players the ropes. The Colts seem to be struggling to find a franchise running back to go with Luck, but bringing in a rookie in this year’s draft to sit behind Gore could bode well for the future. And of course in a sport where there is always room to improve, Johnson can greatly help out the rest of the Colts receiving corps.

After an AFC Championship appearance in 2014, the Colts are looking to go further in 2015. Frank Gore and Andre Johnson may be just what they need to do that.

Road To College Basketball Final Four Recap: Michigan State Surprise

NCAA Weekly Recap 2015 Images

The final week of play in college basketball prior to the NCAA tournament featured some feverish action in conference tournaments around the nation. The country’s top-ranked team concluded a perfect regular season with an SEC tournament title while a coaching legend finally makes it back to the Big Dance with a win in the American Athletic Conference final. Here’s a look at the week’s biggest winners as they prepare for the NCAA Tournament.

No Surprise In The Big Ten

The only real surprise in the Big Ten tournament was the play of Michigan State. Head coach Tom Izzo got an incredible weekend of play out of Denzel Valentine as the Spartans upset Maryland on the way to the Big Ten final. The problem was they had to face sixth-ranked Wisconsin for the conference tournament title. While MSU took the Badgers to overtime, Wisconsin showed why it is one of the nation’s best, shutting out the Spartans 11-0 in OT for an 80-69 win. Nigel Hayes scored 25 points to lead the Badgers and senior 7-foot center Frank Kaminsky added 19. Despite the loss, the Spartans efforts in the Big Ten tourney would earn Izzo and company another trip to the NCAA tourney.

Kentucky Wins SEC Tournament Championship

Junior Willie Cauley-Stein scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds to lead No. 1 Kentucky to an easy 78-63 win over No. 21 Arkansas in the SEC tourney final. The win gives the Wildcats a perfect 34-0 record. Since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, only two teams have entered 34-0 – Kentucky will this year and last year it was Wichita State. Should Kentucky make its way to the Final Four and come away with a championship, they would be the first team since Indiana in 1976 to go unbeaten and win it all.

Markus Kennedy scored 15 points and SMU held off a furious Connecticut comeback to win the American Athletic Conference tournament championship and secure a berth in the NCAA tourney. It will be the first trip back to the Big Dance for the Mustangs since 1993 when they lost to BYU in the first round. For SMU head coach Larry Brown, it will be his first time back in the NCAA tournament since 1988 when he led Kansas to the national championship. It was a bit of redemption for the Mustangs who just missed out on a tournament bid last year and went on to become the NIT runner-up.

Upset In The Big 12 Tournament

Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg might not be able to take it anymore. The Cyclones won their fifth straight game after being down by at least 10 points, this one a 70-66 win over No. 9 Kansas to take the Big 12 Conference tournament and with it, the conference’s automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. Iowa State trailed the Jayhawks by 17 at one point, but Georges Niang scored 19 points and helped the Cyclones overcome the deficit. Going back to March 2, Hoiberg’s squad trailed by 21, 10, 16, 11, and the 17 to Kansas only to come back and win each game. Can the Cyclones head coach take the constant pressure? Surely, if they can continue to win.

Villanova Makes A Statement In Big East

The Wildcats moved out to a 13-point halftime lead and never looked back as Josh Hart scored 15 points off the bench and Villanova won the Big East tournament title with a 69-52 victory over Xavier. It was an impressive win for Villanova, now 32-2, as they head into the NCAA tournament once again. This season’s tournament marks the 30th anniversary of Villanova’s improbable run to the 1985 national championship. Dylan Ennis led Villanova with 16 points and Darrun Hilliard added 12. The Wildcats lost just twice – to Seton Hall and to Georgetown – during the season and will enter the NCAA tourney with 15 straight wins.

Harvard Wins Fourth Straight Ivy League Title

Even though it is the only Division I league without a conference tournament, the Ivy League provided some end-of-the-season excitement with a one-game playoff for a chance to go to the NCAA Tournament. Yale, which had beaten Harvard last Friday, turned around and lost to Dartmouth to set up a one-game playoff for the right to go to the Big Dance. Both teams finished the regular season with identical 11-3 league records. It was a 15-foot jump shot by Steve Moudou-Missi with just under eight seconds remaining that would secure the Harvard win. Fellow senior Wesley Saunders added 22 points, 18 in the second half, as the Crimson will return to the NCAA tourney once again under head coach Tommy Amaker. Yale, which has not been to the NCAA tournament since 1962, finishes the season 22-10.

United didn’t concede a goal, while scoring three. The boxing celebration of Wayne Rooney made more headlines than the goals itself. This could be the start of something very special for the 20 time champions and this win at Old Trafford would give a great deal of confidence to the players for their visit to Anfield this week.

Miami Dolphins Expect Immediate Impact from Ndamukong Suh

0

Ndamukong Suh joins miami dolphins nfl 2015

The Miami Dolphins made a huge splash early in free agency by signing former Detroit Lions Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to an insane $114 million contract with $60 million guaranteed. The deal makes Suh the highest paid defensive player in the NFL, surpassing Houston Texans star J.J. Watt. Sure, it’s a lot of money, but it was money well spent for the Dolphins who address basically all of their defensive issues at once.

The Dolphins finished the 2014 NFL season 24th overall in run defense. Well the Fins do have some solid pass rushers like Cameron Wake, they needed a big body in the center of the line to stuff it up and prevent running backs from getting through. That is exactly what Suh brings. The Lions had the top rush defense in the league this past season, mainly due to Suh and his ability to plug up the running lanes.

The addition of Suh may actually give Miami the best defensive line in the country. Wake had 11.5 sacks this past season without Suh, and Olivier Vernon has notched 18 over his past two seasons with the Dolphins. Former 3rd overall pick Dion Jordan is still working out some flaws in his game, but he certainly has the talent to have a big year with Suh drawing the majority of the offensive line’s attention. In fact, with Suh taking two to three linemen out of each play, all three of the Dolphins pass rushers should see some significant improve—especially Wake, who is used to receiving the double teams on Sundays.

Of course, a move this big also comes with a downside. Suh’s contract is huge, and basically takes Miami out of free-agent spending for the rest of the offseason. The Dolphins still desperately need an offensive line, and they could use some help in their secondary and linebacking corps. These needs will have to wait for now, as Suh is scheduled to make his guaranteed $60 million over his first three seasons with the team.

The Dolphins will need to go through the NFL Draft over the next few seasons if they want to add some depth to the roster, but that is the price of landing one of the most dominant players in the sport. Sure, it may be pricy; but the Dolphins are definitely lucky to have landed Suh—free agents like him don’t hit the market very often at all.

“He’s obviously a dominant player,” said Jason Fox, Suh’s former teammate with the Lions and now current teammate with the Dolphins. “He’s one of the best defensive tackles, if not the best defensive tackle in the NFL. HE’s a game-changing type of player. He’s not the ‘rah-rah’ guy, and he speaks up when he feels like it’s necessary. He’s one of the guys that leads by example. He’s a hard worker, and obviously that shows.”

For the Dolphins overall, it will take more than one elite player to win in a division with the New England Patriots; however, Suh does give the 8-8 Dolphins the push they may need to make an appearance on Wild Card weekend.

The Dolphins are definitely one of the up-and-coming teams in the NFL. With the Patriots on their schedule twice a year, it won’t be easy for the Fins; but their defense is easily top 10 in the league this coming season. A few good wide receivers, a franchise quarterback, and maybe a tight end; and the Dolphins just may find themselves competing for a Super Bowl towards the end of Suh’s contract.

Smartwatches: Fad or Bad?

1

smartwatches fad or bad tech 2015 images

Smartwatches have had a recent growth in popularity with the latest line of Android Wear watches and the new Apple smart watch. Many people are skeptical about the practicality of them, and see no real benefit of having one when he or she already has a smart phone in his or her pocket. Are they worth the money or just a new fad in technology that will soon fade?

2001 ibm watchpad first smartwatch 2015 images

There have been many attempts at a smartwatch in the past with devices such as the 2001 IBM WatchPad, the Samsung S9110 released in 2009, the iPod Nano with wristband attachment, and the 2012 Sony smartwatch. None of these devices really took off and became a popular trend through consumers. However, 2012 became a major turning point in the public’s view with the release of the Pebble. It was funded through a Kickstarter project which received over 100x the set goal of $100,000. This was a huge push forward in the development of smart watches. Major manufactures like Samsung, Motorola, and Asus saw a new company easily outshine all past previous attempts at a practical smart watch and opened their eyes to the large potential market of consumers who want such a device. This led them to ramp up development and research on this type of watch. In 2013, Samsung released its line of wearable computing as a continuation of its Galaxy series by bringing the Samsung Gear onto the market. However, it received negative responses from consumers and faced many critiques in the lack of well thought out design, software, and implementation of connectivity with phones. It is recorded that Samsung only shipped out 800,000 units, where at least 30% of the consumers that purchased the watch at Best Buy were returned due to the surplus faults of the device. On average, it received a review of around 3 stars on reputable technology sites, while the Pebble smartwatch received an average of 4 stars, displaying the lack of ingenuity of this large company.

sony smartwatch 2 sw3 tech 2015 images

The 2013 line of smart watches, including the Gear, Pebble, Sony SW2, and Toq, all had a similar rectangular design. In general, the public was repulsed by this, reducing the overall potential sales. They failed to look like watches that people were used to. Fortunately, the companies responded to the criticisms and rethought the overall design of their products. The smart watch trend we know today was started on September 2014 with the massive release of the Motorola 360. Its design was radically different than its predecessors by supporting a round screen, a familiar look to typical watches. It was a huge hit with Motorola who recorded that it was sold out on the first day of release, way beyond the sale quantity of the other watches. It was sold out everywhere within 3 hours of its release and, like the Pebble, received an average rating of 4 stars. It was the first smartwatch that actually looked good, was comfortable, and felt like it was built solid. But what was also different about it was the software that the watch ran on.

android wear with lg g watch tech 2015

Android Wear was released officially on June 25th and was launched with the LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live, and the soon to be sold, Moto 360. It was a derivation of Google’s Android OS and is only pairable with android devices, leaving the IPhone users with only the Pebble and other less popular Bluetooth watches. However, they will have a solution on April 24th with the launch of the Apple Watch. Like all of Apple’s devices, its price is inflated in comparison to the competition, and will start at $350 and go all the way up $17,000. It will support features similar to Android Wear such as notification support, track heart rate, call and record audio, etc.

But the real question is if anyone actually needs a smart watch. Are they a useful piece of technology that is worth shelling out $200-350 or just an over-the-top watch?  To be fair, smart watches are truly in their infancy right now, and have much more room to get “smarter”. It seems as though developers are stuck on a paradigm where they feel that a smart watch must be paired to one’s phone. But then again, what else could possible be added a watch? A camera? A microphone? These features just make it more and more like the device you already have in your pocket and only add a convenience factor of it being attached to your wrist. This makes the main benefit of the watch, the fact that you do not have to reach into your pocket and struggle to get your phone out. However, playing devil’s advocate, this could increase safety in certain scenarios. For example, while driving, if one receives a text, the device is only angled slightly down in one’s view of the road while his or her hands are on the steering wheel. Reading a text is much safer with this small change of view than the amount of motion that it takes to find one’s phone, unlock it, and read the message. Also, its always-on microphone is a huge benefit as well in terms of safety. A user can simply say “Ok Google text Stephanie hello” (on android wear). But does this make these devices worth it?

Smart watches are still developing, and so the practicality is limited at this point in time. It seems as though they are not worth the money right now, but could possible develop to be a more common and sensible purchase for consumers. The future of smart watches seem to be up in the air, but there is still a huge amount of development and research being done on the devices that could lead them to become just as popular as smartphones are today. Several years ago, people only saw the use of a cell phone as making calls or texting, exemplifying the shift of paradigms that are happening in technology. Maybe this will happen in smart watches as well, only the future will tell.

Arizona Cardinals Season Recap & 2015 NFL Draft Needs

arizona cardinals 2015 season recap images draft nfl

In 2013, the Arizona Cardinals finished 10-6 but were held out of the playoffs because of the tough competition in the NFC West division. Things were looking great for the Cards in 2014 though: head coach Bruce Arians infused a winning attitude into the team, the roster was strong and healthy, and they had a chance to be the first team to play in a Super Bowl on their home field, University of Phoenix Stadium.

head coach brue arians good for cardinals nfl 2015

Things started out fantastic for the Cardinals. Three good wins over the San Diego Chargers, New York Giants, and division rival San Francisco 49ers put the Cardinals at 3-0. The Cards dropped their Week 5 matchup against the Denver Broncos, but then they really went to work winning their next six games in a row. That’s right, the Cardinals started the season 9-1. Unfortunately, on the way to their great start they lost their starting quarterback Carson Palmer to an ACL injury.

After the 9-1 start things went downhill quickly for the Cardinals. The Cardinals dropped their next two against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the struggling Atlanta Falcons and finished their season with two more consecutive losses against the Seahawks again and the 49ers to finish 11-5.

The Cardinals were not able to win their division despite leading it for the majority of the season, but they still did qualify for the playoffs with the top Wild Card spot in the NFC. The Cardinals went on the road to play the NFC South division champion Carolina Panthers. Some people were upset that the Panthers got to host a playoff game at 7-8-1, but they pulled off the upset and sent the Cardinals home early. A disappointing end to a season with such a fantastic start.

With Carson Palmer back, Bruce Arians will try and lead his team to an even better record in 2015. In fact, if the Cards can bring in the right players from the draft, they may even be able to knock off the Seahawks and win the NFC West. If the Cardinals can address their needs this offseason and stay healthy in 2015 they may be able to pull off a deep run in the playoffs. Here are the Arizona Cardinals biggest needs for the 2015 NFL Draft:

darnell dockett injured for cardinals nfl 2015 images

Defensive Line: The Cardinals defensive line was not safe from injury this season; and the Cardinals key defensive lineman, Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell, both sat out most of the season with injuries. The Cardinals backups proved unable to provide the same spark to the defense that their Pro Bowlers did, and the line was worse overall. The Cardinals certainly won’t be able to draft anyone better than Dockett and Campbell, but it never hurts to bring in some solid backups. Look for the Cardinals to spend a mid-round selection or two on some suitable backups for their superstar linemen.

daryl washington not returning to cardinals nfl 2015 images

Linebacker: The Cardinals already have a great backer in Daryl Washington, and Larry Foote was a great addition to the roster in 2014; but Foote is 34, a free agent, and considering retirement. If the Cards want to keep their high profile defense in 2015, they will need to find a good replacement for Foote in the draft. If Arizona spends a first or second round pick on a new linebacker for their defensive front they could really improve their defense. On top of that, the rookie will have Washington to help him learn the ropes of the defensive scheme and possibly become the Cardinals defensive leader in the near future.

Don’t Draft Another Trent Richardson

trent richardson draft colts huge disappointment for nfl 2015

Trent Richardson was going to be a dominant NFL running back. I was sure of it and many others had the same notion. That includes the team that drafted him in 2012, the Cleveland Browns. Richardson has proved us all wrong so far. His time in the NFL has been a huge disappointment and teams all around the NFL will try to avoid drafting the next Trent Richardson come April 30th. That’s not an easy task. How can you know that a guy who absolutely gashed defenses in college the way this guy did will fail in the pros?

Richardson was recently cut by Indianapolis after two dismal seasons. The Colts traded for the runner in 2013 to help out their all world quarterback Andrew Luck. The former Alabama running back was of no help to Luck or the colts, averaging just 3.1 yards a carry in 29 games. The Colts finally had enough of his act and suspended him for two games, one being the AFC Title Game versus the Patriots. The suspension keeps the Colts from paying part of the money they owe the player so I can see why Richardson has filed a grievance on the suspension. Richardson put himself in this position with his poor play though. If he had been doing his job, there’s no way his team would suspend him for a conference title game. He was expendable so they took measures to save some cash on a player that wasn’t helping them anyway.

mark ingram great draft nfl pick for new orleans saints 2015

Let’s go back in time just a bit to Alabama. Mark Ingram was the star running back when Trent Richardson started getting some carries as an underclassman. Richardson was talked about by many experts as being better than Ingram, the starter. Keep in mind that Ingram would eventually win the Heisman Trophy. Once Ingram was off to the NFL, Richardson continued his electrifying performances, now as the starting running back for the Crimson Tide. His play was sure to carry over to the pros. Running backs can make the biggest difference as a rookie. The hardest thing they have to learn is pass protection schemes. Other than that, all they need to do is just what they have done in college, run the ball. It’s not a complicated position so young players can make a big impact early on. It’s one reason veteran backs are not seen as valuable as they once were.

Richardson’s rookie year with the Browns was not awful. He was close to 1000 yards on the ground and even caught 51 passes for 367 yards. But that year was his best by far. His two years with the Colts have produced less than a thousand rushing yards in total. He has missed his agreed upon weight 14 times in 2014 according to reports, although he disputes the specifics of that agreement.

Now that Richardson has been cut by the Colts he will look to be picked up by another team. He still has potential so I’m sure someone will take a shot with him. He didn’t get to be the third overall pick in the draft by having zero talent. I have a feeling that talent isn’t the issue. Work ethic and dedication to his craft may be the problem. How else can you explain a guy having tons of success at the highest level of college football and then falling on his face in the NFL?

Were I Trent Richardson, I would at least think about dropping the grievance against the Colts even though he may have a valid argument. If he truly wants to prove people wrong, then he should wash his hands of all that happened in Indy and move forward. Talk is cheap and just saying he is going to show the world how good he is doesn’t hold much water. He can still be the back with so much promise coming out of Alabama, but it’s going to take a major change in attitude on his part. He has no one to blame but himself. NFL teams don’t go out of their way to ruin a player’s career whom they valued enough to use a top draft pick on. That would be insanity.

There will be a few Trent Richardson’s in the 2015 draft. Guys who balled like crazy in college will simply not have what it takes to make it on the next level. The teams that waste a pick on them will be set back in dollars and time wasted. There is simply no way to fool proof the draft system though. If a guy like Richardson can fail so miserably, then it can happen to any player.

We are pretty hard on athletes that fail to meet their potential. These guys are in the limelight so that’s to be expected. Just think about all the average folks that didn’t reach their potential that we never think about. The genius working in a mundane lab job that could have come up with a great concoction to cure some disease. The insurance salesman selling worthless insurance who could have been a pro golfer with more practice. Or the teacher that could have turned around lives of many students if she didn’t become jaded with all the red tape of the teaching world. Trent Richardson just happened to fail on the biggest stage of all, the NFL. It’s not over for him yet, he still has a shot to be what we thought he could become as a pro. His chances are still there, but Not For Long.

SURVIVOR: WORLDS APART Ep 3 Recap: Nina Washed Out

On this week’s Survivor: Worlds Apart, Joe said he no longer trusted Will because Will was not supposed to vote Vince off the island, but he did. Nina stated to her fellow tribe members that she knew she would be the one voted off this week. She also said that the only way she would be able to stay in the game was by winning challenges for her tribe. Jenn then said that Nina cries all the time and always brings up the fact that she can’t hear what is being said around her.

At camp Shirih watched two monkeys mating. She then went to tell the rest of her tribe and said that they should be more enthused about nature. Tyler complained that she was being as loud and intrusive as monkeys always are. He also said that even though she is trying to fit in with the rest of the tribe it’s not working and that she was putting a big black X on her back, implying she is making herself a target and that she will be sent home as a result.

Dan and Rodney were joking around until Dan said something about Rodney’s mother and Rodney became angry. He told Dan not to disrespect his mother and his family. Rodney was then accused of being a drama king. Rodney said Dan had crossed the line with his comments.

Jenn and Halie discussed going body surfing in the ocean. They each took a piece of driftwood to use as a surfboard. Joe stated he felt the tribe was less paranoid now that Vince is gone. He then went into the water and found a lizard for the tribe to eat. Joe said he was focusing on taking care of the tribe and keeping morale up. He then said that he was going to try to become better friends with Nina because she seemed lonely. Joe confessed that he knows sign language and could use that to communicate with Nina. Then Nina explained how she had been a white collar worker until she became deaf and then she turned into a no collar worker. She also said the rest of her tribe was more free spirited than she is.

The white collar tribe went searching for the immunity idol, but Carolyn stayed behind because she already had it and the rest of the tribe was unaware of this. Shirina started getting on Joaquin’s nerves as he told her he hadn’t trusted her since day one of the game. Joaquin showed Tyler the clue that would lead them to the immunity idol because he said he liked Tyler. Joaquin then said if the tribe lost the next challenge most people on the tribe would probably want Shirina voted out.

Mike said that this pastor dad taught him hard work would result in good things coming to him, so when he sees something around camp that needs to be done, he does it. He also said that his blue collar tribe’s work ethic was failing and that off no collar and white collar individuals, blue collars are the ones whose work ethic is the most important. Mike then expressed his dislike of Rodney. When Mike said that work needed to be done Rodney said he would do the work when he was ready to and that no one at this camp was his dad. He also said that this is a social game and keeping everyone happy is the only way to win.

survivor immunity challenge episode 3 worlds apart 2015

For this week’s immunity challenge, the tribes have to participate in a race in which they have to move a pail of water with holes in it from one end of the course to the other end while losing as little water as possible. The tribe that wins this challenge gets chairs, blankets, pillows and candles to relax with and a tarp to protect them from weather conditions. The tribe that comes in second gets a tarp only. Since the blue collar tribe has an extra member compared to the other two tribes, one person had to be picked to sit out of this challenge. They decided that Lindsay would be the one to sit out. The white collar tribe was the first one to successfully move their pail of water from point A to point B. The no collar tribe lost half of the water they had in their pail. The blue collar tribe ended up winning the challenge and getting the immunity idol. They were given their reward for winning and sent back to camp. The white collar tribe was given their tarp and sent back to camp as well. The no collar tribe then stated that they had prevented Nina from helping them transport their pail of water without having it leak. They admitted that their decision about Nina was a bad call in the end. Will said it was sad they had to go to tribal council again and he thought it was time for Nina to go.

Back at camp Joe felt bad because it was his idea to exclude Nina from helping them transport the pail of water, which backfired on them. Nina and Will talked about that night’s voting and Will said he had no idea what would happen. Nina told Joe she wanted to vote Will out that night. Jenn said both Nina and Will were on borrowed time and Will didn’t perform well enough in the immunity challenge to stay.

That night at tribal council they talked about last week’s tribal council and how it seemed to be about trust. Jeff said that the strategy of pulling Nina out of this week’s challenge was hard to understand. Nina said she felt the tribe had no faith in her because she is deaf. Joe said he knows many deaf people and wasn’t judging Nina. After discussing Nina’s role in the tribe the votes were taken. Jeff then announced that the third person voted off was Nina.

CSI: Cyber CMND Crash Ep 102 Recap

On this week’s CSI: Cyber at an amusement park in Richmond, Virginia a roller coaster ride went terribly wrong. Someone hacked into the roller coaster’s breaking system and sabotaged it. As the result, at full speed the roller coaster slammed into several people who were trying desperately to escape the ride. There was at least one fatality as a result.

Agent Ryan showed up at the house of one of her employees, Nelson, and hacked into his car alarm to get him out of his house. Nelson is a reformed hacker who works for Agent Ryan at the FBI, solving cyber- crime cases. She told him he needed to avoid his girlfriend because she is an illegal hacker and that violates the terms of Nelson’s working agreement with Agent Ryan and the FBI. Nelson is working for the cyber division of the FBI to avoid serving jail time for his illegal hacking.

At the station Ryan’s Sergeant, Simon, briefed her on the roller coaster accident at the Virginia amusement park. The two then talked about footage of the crash that was filmed by some of the victims. They looked at a 3D rendering of the roller coaster to try and figure out what went wrong. Then they determined that the code in the computer that controls the roller coaster had been changed by the hacker who caused this tragic accident. Viewing footage of the accident helped them determine that the woman who had been killed in the accident had just been proposed to by her boyfriend as the roller coaster ride ended. Agent Ryan then announced they were going to the scene of the accident.

Once at the amusement park Agent Ryan questioned one mother whose two sons were injured in the accident. They talked to a victim whose girlfriend was injured in the accident and he stated that he didn’t even know what hospital she had been taken to. Agent Mundo arrived at the scene and got a call that an additional two victims of the roller coaster crash had just passed away. Alex, the man whose new fiancé died in the accident told Agent Ryan that he wanted the engagement ring back so that she could be buried in it.

Upon closer inspection of the computer that controlled the roller coaster ride it was determined that the computer never knew a crash had occurred, which it should have been able to detect. No failure of the roller coaster’s system was detected either. They then began to determine that this had been an inside job and someone working at the amusement park was ultimately responsible for the accident. They suspected the employee who broke into the control room for the roller coaster tried 17 different employee access cards before finding the one that let them into the control room. They realized the park engineer had been fired three months prior and that he could be the one that caused this accident. They found that the former employee was the same man, Alex that proposed to his girlfriend right before the crash.

Agent Ryan and Agent Mundo brought Alex to the station and questioned him about the accident. They confronted him about being the one that broke into the park and hacked the roller coaster’s computer but Alex said he didn’t do it. Based on their discussion Agent Ryan determined Alex was innocent.

Back in Washington D.C. Ryan was looking for Nelson at the station. It was determined a fake panel was put into the roller coaster’s computer in order to enable the crash. Agent Ryan then determined that whoever was responsible for the crash was able to control the computer remotely and was at the scene of the crash in order to make it happen. She surmised that a lawyer could have caused this accident just to be able to see it happen and that an accident this gruesome turns some people on. She also stated that she thought the person that caused this accident would try to cause another one again soon.

Simon went to the FBI’s criminal division to plead with them to release the identity of the person whose blood was found on the computer part that allowed the perpetrator to cause this accident.

Agent Mundo then tracked down the alleged perpetrator, Ronnie, and confronted him. Ronnie stated that he had connections with the FBI and that he had cut himself when he was making the board used in the roller coaster’s computer. He then said he had no idea who purchased this board from him because he doesn’t ask for names or any other identifying information.

Agent Ryan then told Nelson about this development in the case. She told him to join a forum where people post pictures of gruesome accidents such as this one. They determined the person that caused this accident did so in order to get photos he or she could use to be able to join the forum. Once Nelson got into the forum they found the person who allegedly caused the accident and found out the person was planning a subway crash as well.

Nelson started to chat with the person that caused the accident, who was under the impression that Nelson was the forum’s administrator. They got more details about the planned subway crash until the forum’s real administrator discovered Nelson and banned him.

Agent Ryan and her crew arrived in Boston to stop the crash. They raced to the subway station marked for target while attempting to hack the subway system and get the trains to stop before anyone gets hurt. Nelson and Agent Mundo reached the subway train just in time to get some people off safely. Agent Ryan then showed up at the station and caught and arrested Otto, the perpetrator of the roller coaster accident.

Back home in D.C. the team wrapped up the case. Nelson left his phone to go out to eat and ignored his own girlfriend.
