Which NFL Teams Scored Best From Free Agency?

0

nfl free agency 2015 best betsnfl free agency 2015 best bets

This NFL free agency period has been pretty crazy with some big surprises, so we’re wondering what teams scored the best deals and picks during this period. Some of these were real head scratchers, but some were pure genius.

New York Jets

This is not a popular answer because I get that for some people it’s just more fun when the Jets are a fiery train wreck ghost-coasting through dark territory. But the Jets and new GM Mike Maccagnan addressed their most glaring deficiency head-on with a complete rebuild of their secondary — a four-signing barrage highlighted by the return of Darrelle Revis. As a result, the Jets are undeniably better and the Patriots are undeniably worse. Add in the no-brainer trade for Brandon Marshall, and I’m convinced Maccagnan can win a mayoral election in half of Long Island.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers entered free agency with the potential of losing two essential cogs in their offense. Instead, not only did they retain Randall Cobb andBryan Bulaga, they kept them both at a discount. In today’s market, to get not one but two prime-time players to agree to take less money is unheard of. It. Just. Does. Not. Happen. Except, apparently, in Green Bay, whereAaron Rodgers plays his pipe and all step to his tune. The Packers watched two corners be overpaid on the open market and won’t blink. They were built to handle those types of losses. Entering the draft, Green Bay will have a “glaring weaknesses” list so small you can fit it on a grain of rice. And let’s not forget the rest of the NFC North helping to grow the grins in Green Bay: Detroit lost its best defensive player who tried to injure Rodgers last season; the Bears kept Jay Cutler as their quarterback; and the Vikings might trade the best running back in football. Oh, I’d say it was a darned good offseason for the Packers.

Seattle Seahawks

I still see the Seahawks as the most talented team in the NFC. And the most talented team in the NFC just traded for Jimmy Graham.

The swap helps Seattle’s offense in more ways than one. After trying to trade for Jordan Cameron and Julius Thomas last autumn, the Seahawkshave outdone themselves, furnishing quarterback Russell Wilson with one of the game’s most dynamic playmakers. With his ability to line up all over the field, Graham gives Seattle the mismatch advantage they hoped to find in Percy Harvin.

Graham also takes weight off the ground game. Marshawn Lynch will benefit from the attention heaped on the pass-catcher, who regularly draws multiple cover men. TheSeahawks have added a rare difference-maker to their Super Bowl-ready roster. That’s how you win free agency.

Buffalo Bills

New owner Terry Pegula has not been afraid to spend. He nabbed coach Rex Ryan quickly, and has continued to spend on Jerry Hughes, LeSean McCoy, Charles Clay, Percy Harvin, and Matt Cassel. Some of these contracts have been too big, but there’s no denying that the Bills have upgraded the talent on a roster that was already loaded defensively. Most teams have added pieces to the puzzle, but the Bills have re-signed, acquired, or picked up difference makers. Anything short of a playoff appearance will be a disappointment. — Gregg Rosenthal

Indianapolis Colts

As the Colts were limping to the regular-season finish line in December, the Around The NFL Podcast repeatedly pointed out that Trent Richardson and an injury-ravaged Reggie Wayne were holding an otherwise explosive offense hostage. Enter Frank Gore and Andre Johnson, two of the most reliable performers at their respective positions over the past decade.

Gore has averaged more yards per season since turning 28 than he did in the first seven years of his career. Johnson closed out the 2014 season with a 10-catch, 134-yard performance, proving he still has plenty of life in his legs. Similar toSteve Smith last year, Johnson will be playing with a massive chip on his shoulder while catching passes from the best quarterback of his career.

HTTP/2 Makes for a Much Faster Web

0

http2 makes for much faster web internets 2015How would you like it if websites loaded ten to forty percent faster? Sound good, doesn’t it, in light of today’s ad-ridden, bandwidth-throttled internet? And it doesn’t even involve speeding up your subscription. How is that possible? The answer is a change in the protocol used by some websites to deliver themselves into your browser. The protocol is called HTTP/2. Should it matter to the common user? It does since it affects how we use the internet. A little basic understanding wouldn’t hurt. Have that Kleenex handy.

There’s actually no need to be nervous. The protocol thing is transparent to most people who browse the web. When browsing, what most people need to remember is three ‘w’s, a dot and the site’s name for example, WWW.EXAMPLE.COM. The three ‘w’s are even optional nowadays in modern browsers. Notice that after typing in the site name and getting into the website, a quick look at the URL or web address, you’ll see ‘http://www.example.com’. Notice the following characters before the three ‘w’s: ‘HTTP://’. HTTP stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol. Protocols are basically a set of rules that say how information is transferred from one computer to another; in this case, how a web server transfers its information to your computer via the internet. It’s implied in HTTP/2 that the HTTP version is 2. The current version, HTTP/1.1 has been in use since 1999. In the tech world, that is quite ancient but it lasted so long because it’s reliable much like the Golden Gate Bridge. But it’s the tech world and we need improvement and innovation fast. We need to move on from the old HTTP.

With faster and faster broadband, why should we bother changing what works? Even though major US cities enjoy an average bandwidth of 25Mbps, the rest of the world can’t or won’t be able to keep up for the foreseeable future, but still need to use the web like everyone else. If we can’t speed up a semi-truck by adding more horsepower, we can add a spoiler on top of the cab to make the truck more aerodynamic reducing drag. It’s the same concept with HTTP/2.

Under HTTP/1.1, many elements of a website require the browser to establish separate connections per element. Elements such as images, videos, links to other pages and websites, ads and other elements invisible to the user. The ads alone take up most of a website’s loading time since they come directly from other sites and not from the site itself. Ad-ridden sites especially those popular GIF-ads can drag a good website through the mud resulting in a hair-pulling, inward-cursing user experience. Companies that require their websites to be secure, have an additional encryption layer that also slows their websites down. Companies lose revenue if their websites load slowly, blogs lose potential traffic the same way. Under HTTP/1.1, website designers have to resort to tricks and techniques to have their websites load a few precious milliseconds faster such as lowering image and video resolutions and code optimization. Through HTTP/2, even websites built by ordinary people without such knowledge could load 10 to 40 percent faster.

So how can HTTP/2 help make the websites faster? Here’s how:

  • HTTP/2 lowers the number of connections websites have to make in order to load all its elements. HTTP/2 tries to load all the elements under one constant connection reducing the rate of data transfer.
  • HTTP/2 will also transfer data in binary which is much faster than text and lessens the computer’s processing time encoding and decoding text information.
  • HTTP/2 also has the ability to send and receive messages at the same time called ‘multiplexing’.
  • The new protocol can also perform prioritization of data where important data gets transferred first such as article content before other web elements.
  • HTTP/2 can also compress data when sending so websites can transfer faster to their destinations where it gets decompressed hopefully by a fast computer. Often websites load slowly despite the computer having four to eight cores of processor power.
  • And finally, educated server push where the web server sends data ahead of time by ‘guessing’ the user’s next request.

Who do we have to thank for HTTP/2? We have Google and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for it. Google decided it was time to shift from HTTP/1.1 to something faster and came up with its own protocol called SPDY or Speedy. SPDY, just like JAVA is not a real acronym. SPDY performs most of the above and is currently in use and supported by many browsers natively or through plug-ins. The same Google engineers responsible for the SPDY project later decided to draft the new HTTP/2 protocol.

HTTP/2 is not yet an internet standard and has only been submitted to the IETF last February 11. Though HTTP/2 is currently in the draft phase, like SPDY, it is already supported by some browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. Internet Explorer support is only available through beta versions of Windows 10. HTTP/2 standardization will be soon but this new protocol is practically at our doorstep. Here’s to hoping that it gets standardized soon enough.

Preview: Liverpool vs Manchester United Premier League Soccer

What a weekend for football fans! Liverpool will play host to Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United on Sunday. These two English giants are the most successful clubs in the country and there are no dull moments or any shortage of intensity, when these two sides collide. With 9 games to go, there can’t be a better match to set the tone of next few weeks.

Looking at their recent form, Liverpool are the best team in the Premier League closely followed by Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal. Brendan Rodgers’ men are not just winning, they are winning without conceding goals. Simon Mignolet has kept a clean sheet in his last six games for Liverpool. Their recent victory over Swansea City kept them within touching distance of United. United are currently fourth on the league table, two points ahead of the five-time European champions.

Quite contrary to Liverpool, the Red Devils haven’t had a great start to 2015. Yet their last game against Spurs at Old Trafford showed glimpses of what they can be next season. Their 3 – 0 mauling of the North Londoners would certainly boost the confidence of Rooney and co. Hence the clash at Anfield on March 22 seems more mouthwatering .

Their last meeting in the league took place in December last year and the Manchester giants got one better of Liverpool at Old Trafford. The final score after referee’s whistle was 3 – 0, but a lot has changed in three months time. The roles are a bit different as Manchester United aren’t giving as consistent performances as before and Liverpool look dangerous as ever. The Merseyside giants would certainly want to avenge the loss at United’s home. Moreover, the Reds can’t afford to lose this game as it could serve as a big blow to their chances of finishing among top four. They would fall five points behind United if they lose the game on Sunday. But on the other hand, if they manage to maintain similar form until the end of this season, they can even clinch the runners-up spot like they did in the last campaign.

liverpool vs manchester united premier league soccer 2015

LVG’s men need to keep building the momentum as they have to face the league leaders in coming weeks. After the exit from FA Cup, their only mission would be to book a Champions League berth. Among all the teams competing for the top four, United have the toughest set of fixtures. They can even end up at the seventh spot like last season and the Dutch manager could be on his way out.

Angel di Maria will be available for selection after serving a ban following the sending off against Arsenal in the FA Cup sixth round tie. Given the chance, Steven Gerrard can also make his last appearance against Manchester United in the red jersey of Liverpool.

The 18-time English champions are the favorites to win this fixture and are expected to climb up above United after a fierce battle.

El Clasic Preview: Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2015

0

barcelona vs real madrid soccer 2015

It can’t get any bigger than this. The two best teams in the world would lock horns yet again this season and this time the stakes are even higher. Real and Barca are going neck to neck in the race for the La Liga title. Both the teams missed out on last year’s trophy after a long haul as Diego Simeone’s Atletico stunned the Spanish giants. This year the reigning champions have knocked themselves out of contention and are currently fourth in the league behind Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid were leading the title race up until a loss of form earlier this month. Presently, the Catalan giants are spearheading the league, with a point advantage over their arch rivals. In October 2014, these two club sides met for the first time this season and Real Madrid registered a comfortable 3 – 1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Luis Suarez’s debut in La Liga was spoiled by the Los Blancos. But the clash on Sunday will be at Camp Nou and being in such great form, Luis Enrique’s men can believe to pick all three points against the European champions.

It will be a relief for many Madrid stars to play outside their home stadium. Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and a host of big name players have been booed and jeered by the Bernabeu faithful in the last few weeks. Their defeat at home to Schalke was the latest event where the fans showed displeasure and there were even reports of Ancelotti’s sacking. The scenes at Barcelona were quite similar in January as there were rumors of a rift between Lionel Messi and Barcelona boss, Luis Enrique. Barca’s blistering performances on the pitch since then have silenced all the news and rumors.

Both the teams have made it to the quarter-finals of Champions League. Real got a real scare as Schalke played with a lot of vigor and heart at Real Madrid in the second leg of the round of 16 matches. Barca on the other hand dominated over the English champions, Manchester City in both the legs of their first knock-out tie.

Let us talk out the star players. Cristiano Ronaldo started this campaign like no one else in Europe. The Portuguese ace bagged goals, assists and was terrifyingly lethal in the first half of the season. But the three-time Ballon d’Or winner isn’t at his best as a lot of on and off the pitches have taken a toll over him. Lionel Messi has regained his crown at the top after one after another marvelous performances. The diminutive Argentine has claimed that 2014 was a year to forget and it seems he would clinch his fifth Ballon d’Or next year, after missing out on previous two occasions.

The clash between these two giants of world football never ceases to entertain us. One can expect goals, tackles, cards and a few Leo Messi nutmegs if he is in mood.

The Hunt For World Series 2016 Predictions Begins

0

hunt for world series 2016 begins

The hunt for October begins in April for all 30 Major League Baseball clubs. For this one short window all 30 teams sit tied for first place with one major goal at mind. That goal is a trip to the 2015 World Series and a chance to deliver a title to their home town.

This year the list of clubs that have a shot are deep in both the American and National League with as many as 20 teams having a chance to make the playoffs. While the talent level is high across the board we also have a few teams around the league that will need a lot of work if they want to content in 2016.

In the American League the tops teams include the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers and Oakland A’s. While clubs like the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays all have a chance of making it to the postseason.

All of these clubs are built around different elements and types of teams. The one club that really stands out from these clubs is the Mariners with a very deep rotation anchored by one of the best pitchers in baseball Felix Hernandez. The team also added another big bat this off-season with the addition of Nelson Cruz.

Cruz finished with the Major League lead in home runs last season and should provide protection for Robinson Cano in the Mariners lineup. While the Mariners are one of our favorites the other team we really like in the American League is the Baltimore Orioles despite many of the experts and Vegas having them under 80 wins after three straight winning seasons.

The Orioles have shown us over the past few seasons they don’t need anyone to buy into them including Vegas. Last season the team was predicted at 80 or below in the over/under of wins and the club finished with the best record in the American League East.

That being said many experts feel the team didn’t do enough this off-season after losing Andrew Miller, Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz to free agency. The one thing they are forgetting is the fact they will have a healthy Matt Wieters, a healthy Manny Machado and Chris Davis back on his medication to help him concentrate.

As far as the weaker teams in the American League the Tampa Bay Rays stand out as possible the worst team. The Rays lost manager Joe Maddon, Ben Zobrist and Will Meyers this off-season. Add in the fact that team’s rotation has struggled to stay healthy has them at the bottom of the American League East.

The other team that concerns us is the New York Yankees and how well the club’s rotation can stay healthy. While they are clearly not one of the weaker teams they could finish in the bottom of the division if starters like Masahiro Tanaka and C.C. Sabathia can’t stay healthy.

Over in the National League the one team that stands out as the best is the Washington Nationals. The Nationals enter 2015 with the top rotation on paper to build on a pitching staff that finished with the best earned run average in baseball. This includes a rotation that includes two of the games top starters in Max Scherzer and Stephen Stasburg.

On the field we are also expecting a bounce back season from outfielders Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth. While the Nationals are the top team in the National League a team like the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs could both take big steps forward in 2015.

The Padres have been one of the more aggressive teams this off-season adding an entirely new outfield build around Matt Kemp. The team also added one of the top free agent starters in James Shield to anchor a team that finished with the fourth best earned run average in baseball.

The Cubs have been very active this off-season as well adding Jon Lester and resigning Jason Hammel to anchor the rotation. The team could also get a big lift from rookie third baseman Kris Bryant who many expect to start on the big league roster in April.

While all of those teams are some of the top teams in the National League a team like the Atlanta Braves might be one of the worst teams. The Braves have traded away their entire outfield including Justin Upton, Jason Heyward and Evan Gattis landing a bunch of draft picks as well as Shelby Miller.

In the end the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers take home their divisions while the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians take home wild card spots. Over in the National League, the Nationals, Cubs and Dodgers all take home their divisions while the Padres and Pirates take home the two wild card spots.

When the calendar month flips to October the Baltimore Orioles will be taking on the Washington Nationals in a belt way World Series.

BRING IT! Recap: Traci & YCDT SupaStarz Revenge

bring it! tracis revenge recap images 2015

This week, the Dancing Dolls are going to the Dance Explosion competition in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Their biggest rivals this time around is a familiar face- the YCDT Supastarz. The Miami based team is definately gunning for Diana and the girls as always.

traci supastarz for miss d bring it 2015

The last time the two teams met, Coach Traci’s likeness was made fun of horribly by the Dancing Dolls. They had a drag queen looking dude come out with purple hair and other clothing on that made it clear that she was making fun of Traci. The Miami coach felt that Diana went too far and is not playing with her this time.

In the beginning of the episode too, we see each team doing some of their moves for the competition and I have to say that the YCDT Supastarz did look like their routine was going to blow the Dancing Dolls out of the water. Did they? Well you have to keep reading to find that out now don’t you.

Anyway, some of the girls on DD are having a tough time remembering the moves because it is a very intricate routine. Ms. D has them doing some kind of crazy jacket, Hannibal mask routine. Of course she has the girls dance so that she can have cuts and it is dramatic and emotional as always.

The moms look in on as usual and this week Selena’s girls Sky and Star, did not make cuts but Zatia , who usually doesn’t, did so yay for her!

Selena is super pissed because they didn’t make it this week so she steps into the studio after practice and says to Diana, “Can I see you outside?” Ms. D looks at her like, “what” and Selena says “I will be waiting.” Ms. D cracks her knuckles as she makes her way to the door because she says when someone asks you to step outside, those are fighting words.

ycdt supastarz ready for dancing dolls bring it 2015

Selena confronts her in front of everybody and calm with, at first. She tells Diana that she should let Star and Sky try out again. Diana says “hell no” and it gets heated from there. Selena calls her out and says that she just picks the same girls each week (um your girls were picked the last two weeks if I do recall Selena) and accuses Diana of not even knowing which one is which. Ms. D says that she doesn’t know which one is which and pretty much doesn’t care to know because they act alike, dance alike, both have the same nonchalant attitude that “don’t give a damn about nothing.” They get into a shouting match and the other moms, in particular Tina, Kayla’s mom, are impressed with Selena. Diana tells her she’s not doing this and walks away because she does not want to go to jail.

For the record, I feel Selena in wanting her girls to get the most out of their experience, but… she has to realize that outside of Sonjay, are not great dancers. In fact, they are boring and give off the vibe that they are just doing what their mother wants them to do. I do think it’s great that she stood up to Diana because none of them ever do.

During the practice, one of their secret weapons, Andre, hurts himself while he’s flipping. He smashes right into the mirrors and is in a lot of pain, which just adds to the already high stakes DD is up against.

traci shocks miss d in bring it revenge 2015

The day of competition comes and things are complete chaios for the Dancing Dolls. YCDT goes on stage to do their routine, and I have to give it to Traci because she actually comes and dances with the girls. Like this girl is bad, from the way she looks to her dancing. She gave a very clear message to Diana and it was received without a doubt.

dancing dolls moms shocked with ycdt supastarz win bring it 2015

Next, the girls go out and do their thing and it is unique to say the least. DD is in straight jackets for their concept and it is cleaver, but it is not together and it shows. The parents are confused looking at the routine and Ms. D is pissed all the way off because the girls are just messing up.

kayla ready for ycdt supastarz stand battle bring it recap 2015

When the Dancing Dolls come off the floor, they are disappointed and Ms. D tells them that they failed it. It was horrible but they can still save face with the stand battle. They go on stage against YCDT who have their shit together. They did not come to play in any form or fashion.

ycdt supastarz beat dancing dolls bring it lifetime 2015

The Dancing Dolls do their thing and Andre comes out able to dance with the girls.  Their energy is up, they are shaking it and their personality is back.

In the end, even with their last call rally, DD didn’t place in the creative dance competition nor the stand ballet. YCDT took first place in both. You could feel their desire and it showed. They definitely earned that award, and it’s good for the Dancing Dolls to realize that if you want to stay on top, you can’t get complacent which was what Miss D was so frustrated about. Sometimes you need to break down before you really break through.

It was so much emotion in the afterward and the girls feel bad so I’m sure they are going to destroy the competition next week.

Super Bowl vs March Madness: Which Is Better?

super bowl vs march madness 2015

I realize comparing the Super Bowl to March Madness is apples to oranges. The Super Bowl is one game and the Tournament is a stack of games over three weeks. That difference isn’t enough to deter me from debating which is better as a sporting event however. The Super Bowl is obviously the biggest event. It has more eyes glued to the TV than any other sporting event or TV show during the year on an annual basis. Being the biggest and most popular doesn’t make it the best however. So I will go point for counterpoint to see if I can hash out which event is king of the sports world.

  • The Super Bowl gets attention from the average sports fan as well as people who do not watch sports at all on any other day of the year. It is just a huge event much like a holiday. Grandmas, geeky teens, fashion models, and nuclear engineers are just as likely to see the big football game as a diehard NFL lifer. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament gets a lot of eyeballs each day it goes on, but most of these fans like basketball to some degree. The average Joe that has no use for the sport will not make an exception for March Madness. He may do some gambling on a bracket, but taking time to watch is a different story. Advantage Super Bowl.
  • Since the Tournament has so many games there are more last second scenarios obviously. High drama is always a part of March Madness. From Bryce Drew, to Tyus Edny, to Christian Laettner, each year sees buzzer beaters galore. It takes lots of prayers from NFL fans to avoid the all too common blowout that will ruin the biggest gridiron event of the season. Advantage March Madness.
  • The Super Bowl heroes are never forgotten. Scores may fade in the minds of average fans, but they don’t forget great Super Bowl performances. You don’t have to seek out an NFL expert to find out the top five Super Bowl performances. A decent NFL fan doesn’t forget big passing days or epic rushing displays that happen on the biggest stage in the world. Tournament heroes are remembered of course, but not in the same way. Early round heroics may be remembered for a calendar year, but unless you are ripping the hearts out of Kentucky in a later round, the name on the back of the hero’s jersey soon gets lost in the abyss. Advantage Super Bowl
  • March Madness holds more true emotion from the players than the NFLers in the Super Bowl. I’m not as jaded as some fans who say pro athletes don’t care if they win or lose, as long as the checks clear. See Russell Wilson’s interview right after his Seahawks overcame Green Bay in the 2014 NFC Title Game if you think the pros don’t care. But in the Tournament, emotion is everywhere. The fans are jacked up from start to finish. The players know its do or die and many will never be on this type stage again. Many will never play another game of basketball that is watch by more than five people. March Madness is a chance for one last shining moment for guys who will soon join the real world of 9-5 jobs that suck the life out of them. Advantage March Madness.
  • The NFL has a lot of problems. Roger Goodell is a prick. They had a big issue with domestic violence with well known players in 2014. Former players have suffered from brain trauma that led these players to take their own lives in horrific fashion. The league didn’t do much to bring attention to the concussion issue until they had no choice in the matter. Roger Goodell is a prick….worth repeating. Even with all those issues, and many are terrible, at least they pay their players to be in the Super Bowl. The Tournament brings in around $700 million dollars each year, yet the players / workers / indentured servants do not get a game check. That’s a great system if you are a maniacal character like NCAA President Mark Emmert who makes $1.7 million a year and sees nothing wrong with his “student athletes” playing for the love of the game and a free education. Perhaps this snake should work for free next year while taking whatever classes he would like with a free scholarship. Advantage Super Bowl.
  • The Tournament can be enjoyed anywhere at anytime and doesn’t require one to be at the TV every second. You can watch at a loud bar and enjoy it just as much as a quiet night at home with the big screen. The Super Bowl will last a few hours and for me its important to hear the broadcast and be focused on the game. I know that’s not the case for the lay person who is just watching for the great game day food at the Super Bowl party, but this is my perspective, not some guy with hot wing sauce dripping on his khakis. Advantage Tournament.
  • Game time. The Super Bowl starts at about 6:30 pm on a Sunday. The Tournament Championship Game is on a Monday night at around 9 pm. I know that folks at the NCAA don’t work real jobs and likely have like 84 sick days, but regular fans have to get up the next day to go to a real occupation. I can live with Monday night. It would be nice for an earlier tip off though. Most grownups that don’t have NCAA type careers based on the free labor of basketball stars. We need our sleep. Advantage Super Bowl.

march madness fans 2015

I could go on and on, but it’s clear each event has its high points along with the low ones. The Super Bowl would be my choice as the best sporting event. But I am a diehard football fan so my view is slanted in the NFL’s favor. Even with that bias, March Madness isn’t far behind for me. One of my top five sports memories is Bo Kimble shooting left handed free throws in honor of his fallen teammate, Hank Gathers, in the Tournament of 1990.

2015 NFL Draft: Does Melvin Gordon have First Round Talent?

0

melvin gordon first round nfl talents 2015

It’s been two consecutive years now since a NFL franchise has drafted a running back drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. That year, the Cleveland Browns selected Trent Richardson with the 3th overall pick in the draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took Doug Martin 31st overall, and then the New York Giants rounded out the first round by selecting David Wilson. Richardson is already considered a huge draft bust, and Wilson has since retired from the NFL.

Since then, teams have been skeptical of high-profile running backs coming out of college. Georgia’s Todd Gurley looked good enough to break the trend; but after he went down with an ACL injury, it appeared that we would see a third year in a row with no backs taken in the first round—that is, unless Melvin Gordon gets the nod.

Wisconsin’s junior running back had a fantastic 2014 season which included 2,587 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on an insane 7.5 yards per carry. Gordon’s big break out game came against Nebraska when he broke LaDainian Tomlinson’s single-game FBS rushing record set back in 1999. Gordon exploded for 408 yards and four touchdowns on only 25 carries—an average of over 16 yards per carry. The record would be broken the next week by Samaje Perine of Oklahoma.

Clearly Gordon’s ability to run with the ball is not holding him out of the first round, but his ability to play three downs may. If a team decides to spend a first round pick on a running back, they want someone that’s ready to come be their go-to guy. Gordon still needs a lot of work in pass protection and as a receiver out the backfield.

Gordon has shown his willingness to block for the Badgers, but he has also proven that he cannot be trusted to identify a blitz and pick it up. As he stands now, Gordon is a chip-blocker at best.

Same situation as a pass catcher: Gordon certainly has potential, but he needs work in both route running and catching out of the backfield. Gordon had only three receptions his first two seasons in Wisconsin, and his 19 this season were most likely to show NFL scouts that he could do so.

It will be interesting to see where the 2014 Heisman Trophy finalist will land come the 2015 NFL Draft. At 6’1, 215 pounds, Gordon is built for professional football; so the question is whether or not a team desperate for a running back will be willing to work on him this coming season.

Melvin Gordon may not be a first round guy, but with Gurley still recovering don’t be surprised if you hear his name called earlier than expected.

Bundesliga Game Week 25 Review Images 2015

After the 0 – 0 stalemate against Hamburg in the previous game week, Borussia Dortmund have yet again dropped points at the weekend. Dortmund played hosts to Cologne prior to their Champions League meeting with Juventus at home. Klopp’s men couldn’t find a breakthrough goal alike Cologne and the match ended 0 – 0. They are currently 10th on the Bundesliga table after 25 round of matches been played.

Bayern Munich picked up their 20th win of the season. The German champions were entertained by Werder Bremen on Saturday, but it was completely a one-sided affair. Pep Guardiola’s men won 4 – 0 away from home. Thomas Muller opened the scoring and David Alaba added the second with a brilliant free kick right before the break. In the second half, the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski finished off the game by netting two more goals before the final whistle of the referee. They face the third placed, Borussia Monchengladbach this coming weekend. Although Monchengladbach are two places behind the German giants, there is a point gap of 20 between the Bundesliga clubs.

Bayer Leverkusen did quite well on Friday as they defeated Stuttgart 4 – 0 at home. But they were unable to replicate similar performance in the midweek against Atletico Madrid. Leverkusen lost the Champions League game at the Vicente Calderon in a penalty shoot out. Mario Suarez’s first half strike was enough to take the game to extra time. The teams were inseparable as the aggregate score of the two legs was 1 – 1. In the shootout, Torres scored the last penalty to ensure a 3 -2 win for the La Liga champions.

atletico madrid slips to fourth position la liga soccer 2015

Atletico recorded their fifth draw of the season in Catalonia on Saturday. Espanyol held Diego Simeone’s in a goalless stalemate. The Vicente Calderon based side is most probably out of contention for the La Liga title. Yet they can still re-acquire the third spot in the remaining 11 matches. Last year’s Champions League runners-up have made it to the quarter-finals after defeating the Bundesliga side, Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of round of 16 on Tuesday. Atletico held on to the 1 – 0 lead from the first half to the extra time. The 1 – 1 aggregate score called for penalty shoot outs to decide the winner. Fernando Torres scored the last penalty for the Spanish side as they won 3 – 2 against the German club.

Real Madrid are back to winning ways as Gareth Bale spearheaded the Spanish giants to their 21st win of the season. The Welshman has faced the boos and jeers of Bernabeu faithful this season and he responded his critics in brilliant fashion by scoring both the goals against Levante. The Portuguese ace, Cristiano Ronaldo is also not happy with the response of the fans. It won’t be a big surprise if the 30-year-old moves on to another league.

Microsoft Band Beats Apple Watch To Marketplace

microsoft band beating apple watch to market

Microsoft has recently ramped up attempting to be a tech leader in the marketplace, and they seem to be aiming their arrow right at the monster tech company Apple. They’ve increased production along with their distribution apparatus for their Microsoft Band to beat the Apple Watch to the marketplace. With a much lower price, they’re chances are pretty good, but check out to see which one offers more bang for your buck below.

Microsoft is ramping up production and distribution of its Band smartwatch — capitalizing on the popularity of the device before Apple has shipped a single watch, the company announced Tuesday.

Production of the Microsoft Band, a $200 fitness wearable that also functions as a streamlined smartwatch, will be boosted as the device will now be sold at retailers Best Buy, Amazon.com and Target. Previously, the Band was available only at Microsoft’s stores and at Microsoft.com in limited quantities. The Band will also be sold in the United Kingdom along with the United States.

The aggressive expansion of the Band comes a month before the Apple Watch is expected to be shipped. And while consumers don’t appear to be excited about the Apple Watch, the Band has been an unexpected hit for Microsoft. Microsoft hasn’t disclosed sales numbers, but the product has been constantly out of stock in Microsoft Stores and available only for consumers who put their names on wait lists. Apple’s stock faltered after showing its watch last week.

In some ways, Apple is executing like the old and dominant Microsoft and Microsoft is executing as the resurgent Apple in the smartwatch race. The Microsoft Band is highly focused on core tasks and is understated — giving it performance advantages in key areas, namely battery life. The Band works with all major smartphone operating systems, including those running Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android in addition to Microsoft’s Windows. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch is attempting to be the technology jack-of-all-trades of smartwatches — making big trade-offs in exchange, namely battery life. And the Apple Watch is closed and proprietary — working only with Apple’s smartphones.

The Apple Watch is expected to last only 18 hours between charges, yet the Band can go roughly two days on a single charge. The Band can handle health and sleep tracking, such as heart rate monitoring, but has critical smartwatch functionality, including the ability to send and receive text messages, check stock prices and pay wirelessly at Starbucks. And the Band sells for $200, until the arrival of the Apple Watch, which will start at $350 for the lowest-end model.

It’s a major reversal in strategies. This time, it’s Microsoft that has announced a product, made it immediately available and then boosted production and availability. The ramp-up in distribution of the Band comes five months after Microsoft launched the wearable last October — beating the Apple Watch to market. The Apple Watch, shown months ago, won’t ship until April.

Microsoft Band vs Apple Watch comparison: design

Let’s start with the Microsoft Band. One look at the design tells you this is a fitness tracker rather than a smartwatch. It’s a plastic band with a big face, that comes in three sizes: small, medium and large (for wrists of 39mm, 41mm and 49mm). On those wrists you will be carrying around 60g, which is mostly made up of the 19 x 8.7mm main body of the device, which has on it two physical buttons. It is that size because of its capacitive 1.4in 320 x 106 display. This is impressive for an activity tracker/fitness band, although it pales into insignificance when placed next to Samsung’s Gear S.

Our colleague Jon Phillips spent a few days with the Microsoft Band, and was less than impressed with the design: “Where the best wrist wearables are pliable and unobtrusive, the Microsoft Band is bulky and rigid, and never lets you forget you have it on. Sure, it’s physically large relative to competing fitness bands. But the bigger problem is its broad, inflexible display face. Factoring in the bezel around the display, it measures more than two inches long. It’s also straight as a board. A more comfortable chassis would follow the gentle curves of human anatomy.

“The upshot is the Microsoft Band never melts away into the background like a proper wearable. During testing, I always felt that something was on my wrist, especially when I banged the band on table tops, or got it caught on shirtsleeves. It’s omnipresent in the worst way possible.

“There’s nothing beautiful about the Microsoft Band clasp, which is what the world will see if you position the display on the underside of your wrist.

“The Microsoft Band is unique in that you can wear it on either wrist—all other wearables are designed for your non-dominant wrist. It can also be worn on the inside of your wrist. These options are nice, but I never found a comfortable position.

“In fact, the band felt most awkward—sort of like a handcuff—when I wore it on the inside of my dominant wrist. Every flex of my forearm reminded me that I was shackled to Microsoft’s ambitious new Health platform. This position also hides the Microsoft Band’s attractive 320×106 display, and instead shows the world its unglamorous clasping mechanism. Just look at the photo above. It looks like something designed by Raytheon, not a company interested in aesthetics.”

However, it is a well-built device, designed to stand up to life on an active wrist. It’s just neither beautiful nor particularly comfortable (in our tests, at least).

We haven’t had any hands-on time with the Apple Watch. No-one has! But we do know what Apple has told us. Expect a range of watch faces and six interchangeable straps. The Apple Watch is expected to be available in only two sizes: 38- and 42mm. Tough look for those with 49mm wrists – you best be going for the Microsoft Band. There are also three distinct collections: the Apple Watch collection has a polished silver or black case made from a custom alloy of stainless steel; the Apple Watch Sport collection has an anodised aluminium case in silver or space grey, with strengthened Ion-X glass and colourful, durable straps; and the AppleWatch Edition is made from 18-carat yellow or rose gold, which is twice as hard as standard gold, and has sapphire crystal glass, and equisitely crafted straps and closures.

We can safely expect the Apple Watch to be more beautiful than Microsoft’s less expensive Band. Going by Apple’s history it will also be more comfortable. Will it be as robust? We’ll have to wait and see until we can actually use one.

Microsoft Band vs Apple Watch comparison: features

Apple’s Watch is a customisable smartwatch designed to work with the iPhone 6 that is also a comprehensive health- and fitness device. It’s accurate to +/-50ms no matter where in the world you are, and allows you to connect and communicate directly from your wrist. A Digital Crown enables you to interact with the watch without obstructing the screen, and also operates as the home button. Siri is also supported, allowing for smart messages and dictation.

A flexible retina display is a single crystal of sapphire. Force Touch, tiny electrodes around the display, recognise the difference between a tap and a press, allowing for different gestures to be made. A linear actuator provides haptic feedback. This is the Apple Watch’s so-called Taptic Engine: more than just helpfully vibrating when you receive a new notification, it can do such things as provide slightly different vibrations for left- and right turns within the Maps app.

On the back a ceramic cover with sapphire lenses protects four sensors that make up the heart-rate monitor, which allows the Apple Watch to build up a comprehensive picture of your daily activities. The Apple Watch also has an accelerometer to measure body movement, and it uses the Wi-Fi and GPS in your iPhone to track distance. There’s a speaker, too, which is water-resistant.

A Glances feature lets you swipe up from the bottom of the screen to see whatever information you choose to have there. This is quick, at-a-glance summaries of such things as the weather forecast, your location or your calendar.

The Apple Watch lets you control music on your iPhone or computer, or music stored on the Watch itself. Any photos you favourite on your iPhone or Mac will also show up on your Apple Watch.

You can choose what types of notifications you receive on the Apple Watch, then simply raise your wrist to see the notification.

The Microsoft Band is powered by Microsoft’s new Health platform, which Windows Phone, Android and iOS users will be able to use even if they don’t own a Microsoft Band. Like Apple’s Health app, it collects and stores data from fitness devices (whether that’s the Microsoft Band or a third-party fitness tracker like the FitBit) to offer up insights to help you live a healthier life.

The Microsoft Band tracks your heart rate, steps, calories and sleep, and feeds all of that information into the Health app. You can set goals, use the Microsoft Band to complete guided workouts, map the routes you’ve run, cycled or hiked using GPS, and more.

In addition to the fitness features, you’ll also be able to connect your Microsoft Band to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth to get notifications such as emails, calendar alerts and text messages, which you’ll be able to preview. It’ll also let you know when you’ve got an incoming phone call, if you’ve got a notification from Twitter or Facebook, for example.

There’s a built-in timer and alarm app on the Microsoft Band, too.

For Windows Phone 8.1 users, the Microsoft Band gives you access to Cortana from your wrist. You can ask Cortana to take a note for you, or set a reminder, for example. Microsoft has also partnered up with third-parties to bring more compatible apps to the Microsoft Band, including Starbucks, MyfFitnesspPal, RunKeeper and more.

Without knowing more about the Apple Watch, and certainly without playing with one, it is hard to be definitive about the differences here. Expect the Apple Watch to be more sophisticated than the Microsoft Band. Certainly expect it to offer a greater feature set, and better integration with iPhones. Whether that makes it a better device for you only time – and your opinion – will tell.

Microsoft Band vs Apple Watch comparison: specs

The Microsoft Band runs off an ARM Cortex M4 MCU CPU. You get only 64MB onboard storage, so using a smartphone is required for smartphone-like functions: but at least the Microsoft Band synchs with all smartphones via Bluetooth 4.0. GPS is built in so you can work out without your phone being present. so there’s no need to carry your smartphone around with you in order to accurately record and map your runs. You get a three-axis accelerometer, and a gyrometer. Odd inclusions are an ambient light sensor and a skin temperature sensor. Oh, and there’s a UV monitor similar to that of the Galaxy Note 4. And there is an optical heart sensor so you can monitor your heart-rate 24 hours a day. (In our testing this was far from accurate.)

I don’t know if these are things you want to track, but if you do the requisite sensors are onboard.

We know less about the Apple Watch. There are four sensors on the back, these include a heart rate and a gyroscope that can be used to track activity. A custom-designed S1 chip powers the Apple Watch. And that’s about all we know. We’ll keep you posted!

Microsoft Band vs Apple Watch comparison: battery life

This may be a killer feature for one or both of these devices – in the sense that poor battery life will kill them off. The Microsoft Band has a dual 100mAh rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery, which Microsoft claims will last for two days. In our tests we got comfortably more than a day’s use, and that was hammering the GPS and the screen’s brightness (to be fair to Microsoft its two-day claim comes with the proviso that excessive use of GPS will eat into this).

Apple made no mention of battery life during the Apple Watch announcement. But speaking to Re/code, Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris confirm that users should get used to a nightly charge.

“We anticipate that people will charge nightly which is why we designed an innovative charging solution that combines our MagSafe technology and inductive charging,” Kerris said. This is a pretty liberal use of the word ‘innovative’, as multiple Android Wear smartwatches engage this system. But we commend the nightstand charger approach as it should disrupt the average watch-wearer’s experience.

Microsoft Band vs Apple Watch comparison: verdict

Without knowing more about the Apple Watch we can give no definitive verdict, of course. But a few things are clear. The Microsoft Band is far from perfect, but it is a super-powered activity tracker that offers some smartwatch capabilities. It is well priced, and flexible. The Apple Watch will be considerably more expensive, but should at least offer many more functions and features. And it will tie you to using only a recent iPhone, unlike the Microsoft Band. So buy a cheaper, more flexible but less functional product now, or wait and see what Apple can come up with. The choice is yours.

The Woman That Guards Google

parisa tabriz white hat hacker protecting googles front line defense 2015

You usually don’t think about Google or Yahoo needing a front line defense, but naturally, the bigger you are, the more the hackers want to attack. So Google has one of the top white hat hackers working to stop those ‘black hatters’ before they can enter the kingdom and do real damage. Sony couldn’t do it, but the big G has been able to with the help of this very security conscious woman.

In fairy tales, it’s usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google’s headquarters in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle.

Meet Parisa Tabriz, the 31-year-old with perhaps the most enchanted job title in engineering — “Google Security Princess.”

Her job is to hack into the most popular web browser on the planet, trying to find flaws in the system before the “black hats” do.

Out-hacking the hackers

Indeed, much like the good and bad witches of the Wizard of Oz, hackers are described as having “white” or “black” hats. To defeat Google’s attackers, Tabriz must firstly think like them.

In this cyberspace battle, the data of around a billion Chrome users hangs in the balance — and Tabriz wasn’t going to settle for any old moniker.

“When I started, my official job title was ‘Information Security Engineer,’ which I thought was a bit boring and not really meaningful,” said the Iranian-Polish-American, speaking a million miles an hour over the phone from Google HQ.

“So I changed it to ‘Security Princess’ as more of a tongue-in-cheek thing. I’ve never been exceptionally girly or fit the stereotype of a princess, so it was a bit ironic for me to go by that name — and then it stuck!”

Royal responsibility

Tabriz’s role has evolved dramatically in the eight years since she first started working at Google. Back then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers — today there are over 500.

“Our users include presidents of foreign countries — I hope Obama uses Chrome too. It includes really highly-targeted individuals, political dissidents, journalists, and people who just want to casually use the internet,” she said.

“Google depends on those users trusting us with their data. So if we can’t protect it, we have no business.”

Bits of crime

Cybercrime has come a long way in the past decade — from the cliched Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft, and suspected government surveillance over emails.

Tabriz’s biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google’s software, and sell the information to governments or criminals.

To combat this, the company has set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program, paying anywhere from $100 to $20,000 for reported glitches.

“What we’ve seen in the last couple of years is what we suspect to be governments trying to intercept communications,” said Tabriz. “In one case, there were Iranian-region Gmail users whose connection was being intercepted.”

“These incidents are especially scary since they seem to be carried out by large, well-funded organizations or governments,” she added.

Women warriors

It’s a world away from Tabriz’s computer-free childhhod home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabriz had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college.

Gaze across a line-up of Google security staff today and you’ll find women like Tabriz are few and far between — though in the last few years she has hired more female tech whizzes.

She admits there’s an obvious gender imbalance in Silicon Valley, but for once is stumped on the fault.

“Clearly the numbers make you think ‘what is the problem that there aren’t more women working in security, that there aren’t more women working in technology?” she said.

“And it does make me think what is the problem here? Is it the culture or the atmosphere?”

Thinking outside the screen

Funnily enough, during training sessions Tabriz first asks new recruits to hack not a computer, but a vending machine.

“There’s this idea that you need to be a super genius computer geek to be a hacker. But in reality, I think anybody can be a hacker in the real world — just think of all the non-software examples,” said Tabriz.

“A lot of people ask me what’s the best answer I’ve been given to the vending machine problem, and the real answer is there is none. Some people think about how they’d steal their favorite snack; some people figure out how to steal the entire machine of snacks; and some people figure out how they could add some sort of functionality to the machine that wasn’t there before”

Tabriz’s job is as much about technological know-how, as understanding the psychology of attackers.

“Anybody who’s working in defense — police officers, security, or law enforcement — has to stop and think ‘what is the enemy or the attacker going to do?'” she said.

“Because you always want to stay one step ahead of them.”
