Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Karl Urban get activated at Comic-Con 2019

One of the first things I did when I got to San Diego Comic-Con this year was to check out the press preview for the Amazon Prime activation for some of their highly anticipated new shows. I was especially excited to get a taste of the new show, “The Boys,” based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The show flipflops our usual expectations for a superhero show by taking a no-holds-barred look at what happens to superheroes once they succumb to the lure of fame and fortune and power. (And if you think that’s a handy dandy way to look at the very same dynamics in our own real world, you’re absolutely right).

The show seems to be all about the gray, so nothing is black and white, but the good “guys” (who are not all guys) are the mere humans trying to fight back against flawed superheroes and the multi-billion dollar organization that essentially manages their social media presence. It’s “The Boys” versus ‘the supes’ and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun. I was also intrigued because I fell in love with one of showrunner Eric Kripke’s first “babies”, Supernatural, and have watched all he’s done since. I love the way he isn’t afraid to go meta or to weave in sometimes surprising combinations into one show, from the violent to the irreverent to the heartwarming – and the heartbreaking. So I was excited to experience a little bit of “The Boys!”

The activation took you inside the world of “The Boys” and right into a case, as we all teamed up to help some of “The Boys” crack a case and figure out what ‘the Supes’ are up to no (no good clearly).  One of them had crashed a car right into an electronics shop, so we combed through the rubble for clues while “The Boys” used the F word more times than I may have ever heard in the space of fifteen minutes! It was high energy, gritty, dirty and did a great job of portraying the feel of the show. It also threw us all when one of “The Boys” suddenly turned on a guy who we thought was a guest just like us and freaked out about him filming on his phone.

The boy: Are you a supe??? Are you??? Why are you filming, huh?

He threw a punch and the guy fell to the floor, obviously bleeding, and a few people in our group actually gasped out loud because they didn’t realize he was part of the activation. Well done, Amazon Prime!

After I attended the press conference for “The Boys” (and was thrilled to be able to ask showrunner and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke a question!) I jogged over to Ballroom 20 to catch the panel. (I seriously do not want to walk for a week once Comic-Con is over…)

The cast includes “The Boys” – Jack Quaid as Hughie, Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Tomer Capon as Frenchie and Karen Fukuhara as The Female, and ‘the supes’ – Antony Starr as Homelander, Erin Moriarty as Starlight, Dominique McElligott as Queen Maeve, Jessie T. Usher as A-Train, Chace Crawford as The Deep and Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir, as well as Elisabeth Shue as Madelyn Stillwell, VP of that multi-billion dollar PR firm and Sim Pegg as a guest star as Hughie’s dad.

The Comic-Con panel also had showrunner Eric Kripke and exec producer Seth Rogen.

They kicked off the panel with the great news that not only is the show renewed for a Season 2, but they’ve already been filming it! That brought a cheer from the packed ballroom, because just from the little teaser clip they showed during the panel, we are all very excited about this show! They also announced that Aya Cash will join the cast in Season 2.

They also played a clip that let us know just how much fun this show is going to be – and just how irreverent. Though you could probably figure that out just by the graphic.

The cast and creators are clearly very excited too.

One of the dynamics that seems interesting in the show is the big brother-little brother relationship that develops between Hughie and Billy Butcher. (A theme familiar to fans of Supernatural or Kripke’s other shows).

Jack Quaid Karl Urban answer boys questions comic con 2019 panel

Jack: Hughie was thrown into this world, and there’s sort of a buddy cop dynamic that develops with Butcher.

Karl: When did that dynamic start? Well, we met and played a game of pool for money and I won so I thought to myself oh, we’ll be good friends…

Jack: I lost a lot of money, so then I HAD to do the show…

As far as Butcher’s back story, Urban said that he has an axe to grind against Homelander, a vendetta. And he meets this kid (Hughie) and they have this in common. So he sets out to use this kid, but it ends up propelling them on this fun journey, and this relationship forms between these two characters who are like…chalk and cheese…

Everyone on the panel: CHALK AND CHEESE? WTF?

Karen Fukuhara jack quaid karl urban boys panel at comic con 2019

Laz: Billy and Mother’s Milk go way back. He has something to lose, so he becomes the moral compass of the group. Kinda the mama…

Tomer: And Frenchie is the teenager of the family. The Dad is Billy Butcher. Frenchie is kinda the heart of the group.

You can see that Kripke’s underlying theme of family and found family is alive and well in “The Boys.”

chace crawford antony starr erin moriarty boys comic con panel 2019

Karen: The Female is pretty badass. The first scene that you see of her, that was my audition scene, and I was like, can I really do this? But I guess it was inside me all along!

[The scene is amazing btw!]

Antony Starr with Eric Noriarty Boys Comic COn 2019 talk

Karl Urban said that one of the things that drew him to the project is that it’s a great counter-narrative to the Marvel and DC stuff out there.

Seth Rogen: Which, btw, you’re also in!

The entire cast agreed that it was the characters who drew them in, because they’re so different from what’s already out there.

Jessie: It’s like a Modern day A Team, and that appealed to me. It’s the teamwork that makes it so tasty and gratifying.

Elisabeth Shue Tomer Capon Laz Alonso Boys Comic Con Panel 2019

Elisabeth: For me, I was drawn to the vulnerability of the characters. It’s a vulnerability that comes from pain, and that makes it real.

Eric Moriarty talking The Boys at Comic Con 2019 panel

Erin: I like the social commentary. And I’m a little tired of the ingénue role, a woman being just the object of desire. You think that’s what my character is going to be, but she’s not.

Antony: Spandex, lasers, cool boots…Oh, and we come to work and fuck shit up!

Chase: it’s like the anti superhero narrative. There’s nothing else like it.

They also mentioned the music in the show, which was pretty badass in the clip they showed. Music is so important to Supernatural that it’s almost like a character in the show, and “The Boys” will stick to that tradition – except where Supernatural was classic rock, “The Boys” is punk all the way!

Laz Alonso Karen Fukuhara Jack Quaid boys comic con panel 2019

Stay tuned for my report and videos from “The Boys” press conference, and my chat with “The Boys” and “Supernatural” composer Chris Lennertz about how he creates the music that is so important to both shows! I ask Eric Kripke about how “The Boys” is similar to Supernatural, and get some very interesting answers.

And be sure to catch the premiere of “The Boys” on July 26 on Amazon Prime here!

Comic-Con 2019: Marvel’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’ has their final Hall H Panel

I didn’t actually start out intending to go the “Agents of SHIELD” panel; I tried to go to the Farscape reunion panel. Farscape has been off the air for quite a while, over a decade I believe, so I don’t think Comic-Con expected a large crowd. They put the panel in Room 7AB, which is not one of the giant rooms. Much to their surprise, fans lined up around the corner and down the hall and looped around again and again – in other words, there were WAY too many people to fit into 7AB.

I was one of those hapless people. They let me in to snap a few photos with my phone, so I got a quick glimpse of the cast and the packed room, but I only had my phone so it was more like photos of some blurry little heads at a table. Alas. I think I did recognize Ben Browder and got to hear him tell a bit of what was clearly an amusing behind the scenes story, but then I was compliant with the “take a few photos and move on” directive and had to do just that. Ah well.

So, I ran back down to Hall H and caught the “Agents of SHIELD” panel instead.

“Agents of SHIELD” made its last appearance in Hall H of Comic-Con, and it was an emotional panel for both the fans in the audience and the actors on the panel. They started out with a heartfelt thank you to the crew, who are always indispensable to the success of a show. Then they played a compilation video of each of the first six seasons of the show, with both emotional and kickass highlights of each. Fans reacted with applause as they relived some of their favorite moments, and then the actors weighed in too, sometimes giving some insight into their own memories of filming those moments.

The actors were emotional about the show ending. Jed said that they were right now filming the last episode and it feels like they’re going through the same thing that the characters are going through – their last mission.

Another cast member quipped, “the dragons look great…” and everyone laughed, but I think that joke was needed to break the sudden wave of emotion that swept through the hall as everyone thought about that.

clark gregg thanking agents of shield fans at final comic con panel 2019

Clark Gregg thanked the fans and his fellow cast.

Clark: For this incredible ride that has changed all our lives.

There was a sense in the room that everyone was grateful, and wanted this last chance to express that gratitude. They recognized and thanked one of their producers, Gary Brown, in the audience, who has been critical in keeping the show going, and they each looked back on their time with the show.

Clark: In the early days, it felt like every week we made a mini-movie. We made lifelong friendships, became family.

Maurissa Tancharoen: At the last table read this week, they put our first sides in them.

She started to tear up as she spoke, and her fellow cast members got emotional too. They clearly respect and care about each other a great deal.

Jeff Bell: All the cast are amazing on screen but all can do the quintessential chew gum and jump rope too, so it’s more than that.

There were some amusing moments too. Someone suggested a reenactment of a kiss scene, and Maurissa said “last time there was a suggestion like that Iain kissed Jeff instead.”

Iain DeCaestecker: I’ll kiss Jeff again right now…

Henry Simmons agents of shield comic con panel 2019

Henry Simmons said that some of his last scenes on the show were emotional for real.

Henry: It wasn’t just me acting. I took it personally. It was my way of saying how much I love them and how much I’ll miss them.

Jeff joked about how Henry ended up going from being in a few episodes to becoming the Director of SHIELD.

Jeff: There was this scene with Henry working, wearing a flannel shirt, and we looked at him and we were all like “ka-ching”

Henry: I never thought I’d become the Director. When they went to find me to tell me, I thought they were looking for me to tell me I was being killed off – so I ran away!

Natalia cordova buckley comic con final agents of shield panel 2019

Natalia Cordova-Buckley talked about filming an emotional scene with Henry sobbing over losing his child, and her character sobs with him. She said they were sobbing for real, then had to keep stopping so they could remove more furniture, then pick it up again (which must have been next to impossible)

Iain was asked about being the “big bad”. He responded by singing ‘you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone’.

Everyone: Ain’t that the truth!

Seemed particularly relevant for a show going into its final season – I think the fans are determined to cherish the last season, just as the cast have clearly done while filming it.

jeff ward agents of shield comic con 2019

Jeff Ward joined the cast in S5 as Deke. He apparently stole the part in a table read for a side character who was killed off. He was so good, everyone else was like oh no, he died:? So they wrote him in!

Jeff:  I’m trying not to cry right now. They care about what we’re doing and about each other. To be taken in by this family was special to me… I love them.

jeff ward with jed whedon agents of shield comic con panel 2019

Clark Gregg summed it up as they ended with a teaser reel for the final season.

Clark: Getting to say goodbye to these characters, that’s real emotion. The membrane between real and fictional is thin for us.

Gregg’s comment was a fitting way to end the panel. He was talking about how the cast has come to feel about playing these characters, as well as the way the actors have come to feel about each other. There’s real affection and respect there, so saying goodbye was difficult. The comment was fitting for the fans too. When you really love a show, those characters do become real to you. Not in the sense that you lose touch with reality and think they’re standing next to you, but in the sense that they cross that boundary into your real life to inspire you, and to create a sense of community with other fans who are similarly inspired.

This Comic-Con is an emotional one for many fans because their favorite shows are coming to an end, and there’s a sense of ‘let’s cherish this while we have it’ in the air. I feel it for my favorite show, Supernatural, which is also ending after its next season. I enjoy “Agents of SHIELD”, but I couldn’t help but think about this panel also as preparation for Supernatural’s last Hall H panel this weekend  I have a feeling there will be even more tears in that one, so stocking up on tissues for Sunday!

The Farscape panel that I didn’t get to attend was a bit of a comfort, however. Silver lining, yada yada, I’m trying! The show had a passionate fandom when it was on the air. I remember reading some amazing fanfic and enjoying analyzing the show with fellow fans. I even when to a convention once, many years ago. I was never a fan like I am of Supernatural (pretty sure that’s a once in a lifetime thing for me) but I was a fan. And here we are, over a decade later, and those passionate fans are still passionate enough to stand in line hours early to see those actors again and talk about that show they loved again. Obviously, it’s different. It’s not Hall H, it’s not all the actors, it doesn’t happen very often. But once you’re a fan of something, that doesn’t go away. I took some solace in that, thinking about this being the last year of “Supernatural.” Pictured myself a decade from now hugging a hundred people who I haven’t seen in a long long time as we all wait in a surprisingly long line to once again celebrate that little show we so came to love.

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ tops box office weekend again as ‘Stuber’ falls flat

Tom Holland, Sony and Marvel are riding high as “Spider-Man: Far From Home” topped the box office charts another week while 20th Century Fox is slowly realizing that maybe they’re movies just aren’t so good this year. “Stuber” stalled over the weekend which is already having industry insiders questioning the theatrical viability of modestly budgeted comedies. Especially now that we are in the Netflix world where they can easily be seen there instead of shelling out money for a movie ticket. North American theatergoers have turned a shoulder to similar comedies this summer including, “Long Shot,” “The Hustle,” “Shaft,” “Poms,” “Late Night,” and “Booksmart.”

As studios have been focusing more on big-budget franchise films so comedies aren’t having the best of luck getting theater space. Marvel does a great job of melding action with comedy which is also pushing things, and with the upcoming “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” fans will get plenty of laughs with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

Of the new releases this weekend, Paramount’s “Crawl” did the best for wide release. The studio did a smart simple marketing campaign showcasing the film as a simple summer fun movie in the vein of a “Sharknado.”

“Stuber,” on the other hand, had a $30 million marketing budget that was used to go after men during WrestleMania and the NBA Finals. ESPN, owned by Disney, was a marketing partner with a tagline “Saving the day takes a pair.” Yup, double entendres don’t always work. Disney took over the Fox Studio, but they aren’t having a lot of luck at the moment. “Dark Phoenix,” was the previous Fox film released by Disney cost nearly $400 million with marketing expenses and only took in about $250 million worldwide. When about half of that income goes to theater owners, you can see the problem.

Amy Adams’ “Woman in the Window” about an agoraphobic psychologist who witnesses a crime, is another Fox film which was pulled form Disney’s 2019 release schedule last week so reshoots can move forward. Rather than the original October 2019 release date, it won’t come out until sometime next year.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” is celebrating another weekend at No. 1, but non-franchise fare continues to struggle at the box office. Fresh studio-released counterprograming such as the horror movie “Crawl” and the action-comedy “Stuber” barely made a dent in the web-slinger’s earnings, although there is a glimmer of hope in the independent world.

The “Spider-Man” sequel added $45.3 million in its second weekend, down only 51% according to studio estimates Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $274.5 million. Globally, Sony Pictures’ “Far From Home” has already grossed $847 million.

Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” landed in second place with $20.7 million in its fourth weekend in theaters. It’s now earned $346.4 million from North American theaters.

But while the well-reviewed franchises are thriving, original newcomers are facing an uphill battle in wide-release.

“Crawl,” a thriller from Paramount Pictures, debuted in third with an estimated $12 million against a reported $13.5 million budget. Directed by Alexandre Aja, “Crawl” stars Barry Pepper and Kaya Scodelario as a father and daughter trapped in their home with a bunch of angry alligators during a hurricane. The R-rated pic has been was not screened for critics in advance, which usually signals a dud, but it has been surprisingly well-received by critics since opening. It’s currently 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Uber comedy “Stuber” got off to a bumpier start with an estimated $8 million from over 3,000 North American locations. The R-rated Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista film cost a reported $16 million to produce and has not inspired the best reviews (it’s resting at a rotten 46. It’s the latest Fox film to be released by Disney.

“People always complain about the lack of original offerings from the studios especially during the summer but this summer in particular it seems like audiences are turning their backs on these films,” observed Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “It’s a real head-scratcher in a way as to why some of these films aren’t doing well.”

Universal’s Beatles-themed rom-com “Yesterday” rounded out the top five in weekend three with $6.8 million.

Dergarabedian said that it’s never a good thing for the box office when week after week the top movies are holdovers.

“That means newcomers are not making inroads,” he said. “You want audiences every weekend to be excited about a new film.”

That lack of enthusiasm is showing in the overall industry numbers. The weekend is down nearly 26% and the year is still around 9%, although Disney’s blockbuster-in-the-making “The Lion King” is on the horizon. The photorealistic remake of Disney’s animated classic opened this weekend in China ahead of its North American debut and made an estimated $54.7 million.

Although the big new releases failed to light the box office on fire, the independent film scene was thriving with myriad of options.

Among the most notable is Lulu Wang’s family drama “The Farewell,” which currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Awkwafina-led film opened in four locations to $351,330 for a massive $87,833 per theater average. It’s expanding to more cities in the coming weeks.

The dark Jesse Eisenberg comedy “The Art of Self Defense” opened in seven locations to $121,080, and the Marc Maron-led “Sword of Trust” debuted in two locations with $22,512. Documentaries, such as “Maiden,” ″Pavarotti” and “Echo in the Canyon” also continue to find audiences in limited release.

“If you’re an independent movie fan, this is your weekend,” Dergarabedian said. “The diversity of films is just staggering.”

Harley-Davidson goes electric, Trump’s Summer Slam plus Google’s still listening

Harley-Davidson has truly entered the new world with their LiveWire, an electric motorcycle coming out in 2019.

The motorcycle giant is now releasing details about the electric motorcycle it’s rolling out this year that it hopes will capture the imagination of a new generation of riders and put a charge into its diminishing sales.

The LiveWire, which will soon be available in a limited number of dealerships, will cost nearly $30,000 and can go zero to 60 mph in three seconds. There is no clutch and no shifting.

The company said Thursday that buyers will have access to free charging at participating LiveWire dealers for the first two years.

The Milwaukee motorcycle company has struggled with declining sales and an aging client base in the U.S. and abroad.

Its U.S. motorcycle sales declined 4.2% and international sales fell 3.3% in the first quarter of this year.

Harley’s traditional, non-electric motorcycles range from about $6,900 for a compact, urban model to nearly $44,000 for a fully-loaded touring bike.

Additional free charging will be provided by Electrify America, a Volkswagen subsidiary created to build charging sites after Volkswagen settled charges that it cheated on diesel emissions.

google workers can listen in on assistant

Google Listening In

Google said its contractors are able to listen to recordings of what people say to its artificial-intelligence system Google Assistant.

The company acknowledged that humans can access those recordings after some of its Dutch language recordings were leaked. Google is investigating the breach.

The recordings were obtained by Belgian broadcaster VRT NWS, which noted in a story that they sometimes contain sensitive personal information.

Google says contractors listen to recordings to better understand language patterns and accents. Its user terms confirm recordings may be used by the company. This feature can be turned off, but doing so means Assistant loses much of its personalized touch.

A Bloomberg report earlier this year also revealed Amazon’s Alexa voice technology uses contractors to review recordings, which Amazon later confirmed.

donald trump twitter rant holiday weekend

Donald Trump’s Social Media Summit

President Donald Trump, who has weaponized social media to eviscerate opponents and promote himself, was convening a White House conference Thursday of like-minded critics of Big Tech, notably excluding representatives from the very platforms he exploits.

The meeting represented an escalation of his battle with companies like Facebook, Google and even his preferred communications outlet, Twitter. The president has claimed, without evidence, that the companies are “against me” and even suggested U.S. regulators should sue them on grounds of anti-conservative bias.

The high-profile White House event raised the prospect of Trump using the forum to signal tough actions ahead by his administration against big tech companies in the areas of competition and privacy. The event is already causing his administration some serious headaches before it even began. Some pro-Trump personalities weren’t invited so that’s causing a far right tirade.

The firms already are under closer scrutiny than ever by regulators and in Congress following a stream of scandals including Facebook’s lapses opening the personal data of millions of users to Trump’s 2016 campaign, and a bipartisan push for new data privacy legislation has emerged in Congress. Regulators at the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission are pursuing antitrust investigations of Facebook, Google, Apple and Amazon.

Trump’s volley of Twitter messages Thursday had familiar targets — “certain companies,” the press and his Democratic rivals — that have proven resonance with his political base. The president predicted, without foundation, the demise of the press and the social media platforms if he loses to a Democrat in 2020. He hailed himself as “so great looking and smart, a true Stable Genius!”

A “big subject” of the summit would be “the tremendous dishonesty, bias, discrimination and suppression practiced by certain companies,” Trump said in his tweets.

“We will not let them get away with it much longer,” he said.

Among the conservative organizations expected to participate in the White House meeting are Turning Point USA, a nonprofit; PragerU, short for Prager University, which puts out short videos with a conservative perspective on politics and economics; the Media Research Center and the Heritage Foundation, a Washington think tank.

Accusations commonly leveled by conservatives against the social media platforms include anti-religious bias, a tilt against abortion foes and censorship of conservative political views.

Trump has made it a priority to reach out to voters who oppose abortion. The anti-abortion groups Live Action and Susan B. Anthony List say Twitter has blocked their advertising. By policy, Twitter prohibits paid ads with content “that is inflammatory or provocative and is likely to evoke a strong negative reaction.”

Donald Trump Jr. weighed in on the subject Wednesday, tweeting: “Twitter: We won’t allow pro-life groups like @LiveAction to run ads on our ‘platform’ & if you’re a conservative we might ban you for 1st Amendment protected speech that we arbitrarily deem ‘offensive.’”

While some Silicon Valley company executives may lean liberal, they have asserted that their products are without political bias.

Representatives for Facebook, Google and Twitter have declined to comment specifically on the White House meeting. The Internet Association, the industry’s major trade group representing Facebook, Google and dozens of other companies, said online platforms “are the best tool for promoting voices from all political perspectives in history.”

“Internet companies are not biased against any political ideology, and conservative voices in particular have used social media to great effect,” the group’s president Michael Beckerman said in a statement Thursday. “Internet companies depend upon their users’ trust from across the political spectrum to grow and succeed.”

Facebook has banned extremist figures such as Alex Jones of Infowars and Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam. Twitter has banned hate speech on the basis of someone’s race, gender and other categories. Twitter broadened its policy this week to include banning language that dehumanizes others based on religion, and the company said it may also ban similar language aimed at other groups, such as those defined by gender, race and sexual orientation.

“I’ve never seen evidence of tech firm bias against conservatives,” said Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., who has been sharply critical of the big companies for reasons of their market dominance and effect on competition. He leads a House Judiciary subcommittee that has opened a bipartisan probe into the tech giants’ market conduct.

“If someone wants to show me some empirical data, instead of some alt-right member’s paranoid claims, I’d appreciate it,” Cicilline said in a statement Wednesday.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said private companies should be allowed to remove “vicious, racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic hate speech.”

“But this president, amazingly, seems to believe that when offensive language is coming from a right-wing source, and it’s taken off the social media site, that’s censorship,” he said.

Trump has an estimated 61 million followers on Twitter and uses the platform almost daily to speak directly to his followers. He has a knack for tweeting outrageous, divisive or tongue-in-cheek missives that spur frenzied reactions from the mainstream press.

At the same time, Trump has accused Twitter, without evidence, of making it “very hard for people to join me” and “very much harder for me to get out the message.”

Trump was dealt a setback Tuesday in his ongoing legal battle against Twitter. A federal appeals court in New York City ruled that the president can’t ban critics from his Twitter account, saying the First Amendment calls for more speech, rather than less, on matters of public concern.

Wimbledon 2019: Rafel Nadal takes on Roger Federer again, Djokovic has tough match with Agut

It’s been eleven years since Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal took each other on at Wimbledon so you can bet that fans will be crowding in to see this spectacular matchup on Friday. Their last head to head there in 2008 has been tagged as one of the greatest matches every played.

After going more than 1½ years without playing each other anywhere, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be meeting at a second consecutive Grand Slam tournament when they face off in Wimbledon’s semifinals.

Last month, Nadal got his shot at Federer on red clay, winning their wind-whipped French Open semifinal in straight sets on the way to a 12th title there.

“We had some brutal conditions to play (in) there. But it was a joy to play against Rafa there, on his court,” Federer said. “And, of course, I’d love to play against him here at Wimbledon.”

On Friday, Federer gets his shot at Nadal on grass and hopes to prolong his pursuit of a ninth championship at the All England Club.

“Means a lot for me,” Nadal said, “and probably for him, too.”

This is their 40th showdown on tour; Nadal leads 25-14. It’s their 14th match at a major; Nadal leads 10-3. And it’s the fourth time they’ll play at Centre Court; Federer leads 2-1.

But Nadal did win the last one, edging Federer 9-7 in the fifth set of the 2008 final — considered by many the greatest match in tennis’ lengthy history — as daylight dwindled to nothing.

That would never again be an issue, because a retractable roof and artificial lights have been in place at the tournament’s main stadium since the following year. Another movable cover was added to No. 1 Court this year.

What hasn’t changed? Federer and Nadal are still at the top of the game.

If it’s hard to believe more than a decade has passed since these two rivals last shared a court at Wimbledon, it’s also tough to fathom how it is that they have dominated their sport as long as they have. Federer ranks first among men with 20 career Grand Slam titles. Nadal is next with 18. Add in the third-place count of 15 trophies belonging to Novak Djokovic, who is seeded No. 1 and plays No. 23 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in Friday’s other semifinal, and this terrific trio has won 53 of the last 64 major championships.

That includes 14 of the last 16 at Wimbledon. Also: 10 in a row everywhere over the past 2½ seasons.

Djokovic is seeking his fifth trophy, and second straight, at the All England Club, while Bautista Agut is making his Grand Slam semifinal debut.

Djokovic leads 7-3 head-to-head, but Bautista Agut won their two matchups this season, both on hard courts.

“Going to try to use my experience in being in these kind of matches, get myself tactically prepared,” Djokovic said. “Hopefully I can execute everything I intend to do.”

Although Federer turns 38 on Aug. 8, Nadal is 33 and Djokovic 32, they aren’t showing signs of letting up.

“We still (feel) that we have chances to compete for the most important things,” Nadal said. “That’s what really make us keep playing with this intensity.”

Not to mention keep working on aspects of their game.

Federer, for example, switched to a larger racket and began using a flatter backhand more frequently instead of a slice. Nadal has worked on his serving and that’s helped him once again be a contender on grass.

He reached the final during five consecutive Wimbledon appearances from 2006-11, winning twice, but hasn’t been that far since, including a series of exits against opponents ranked 100th or worse. Last year, he was beaten in five sets by Djokovic in the semifinals.

“Haven’t played each other in a long, long time on this surface. He’s serving way different. I remember back in the day, how he used to serve. And now, how much bigger he’s serving, how much faster he finishes points,” Federer said. “It’s going to be tough. Rafa really can hurt anybody on any surface. I mean, he’s that good. He’s not just a clay-court specialist, we know.”

3 Wimbledon Matches For Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer

2006 Final, Federer d. Nadal 60 76(5) 67(2) 63
The question – Could Roger Federer be beaten on grass? – was not a rhetorical one in 2006, two years after the surging Nadal introduced himself as a potential challenger to the Swiss. Heading into their 2006 final, Federer, the top seed and three-time defending champion, was riding a 47-match grass-court winning streak.

But while Nadal had proved a worthy fighter on clay and hard – the Spaniard had won 17 tour-level titles, including two Roland Garros crowns, all basically before his 20th birthday – he had yet to carry that success over to the grass. The 20-year-old was playing in his first Wimbledon final and his previous best finish was the third round.

The duo had split the season’s two first Grand Slams – Federer winning the Australian Open (d. Baghdatis) and Nadal Roland Garros (d. Federer). But during their second meeting in a Grand Slam final, it was Federer who began in hot form and maintained his level.

The Swiss eased through the opener and broke Nadal when the Spaniard served at 5-4 to close out the second set. Nadal rebounded in the third, but Federer took early control in the fourth, breaking Nadal at 2-1 and 4-1 and eventually winning the Championships when serving at 5-3.

Federer, who captured his 39th career title and eighth Grand Slam crown, became the sixth man to secure four straight Wimbledon titles. He’d go onto have one of his best seasons ever, winning three Grand Slam titles and becoming the first man to reach all four Slam title matches since Rod Laver in 1969. Federer finished 2006 with 12 tour-level crowns.

2007 Final, Federer d. Nadal 76(7) 46 76(3) 26 62
Nadal had again beaten Federer in the Roland Garros final, the Spaniard’s third consecutive Paris title. And, during their second Wimbledon final, he showed he would be a formidable foe for Federer on quick surfaces for years to come by producing the best grass-court performance of his career despite having endured a draining fortnight.

Nadal, playing for the seventh consecutive day after rain wreaked havoc on the tournament schedule, showed his mental and physical toughness by pushing the four-time defending champion Federer to five sets for the first time in his 34-match win streak at the All England Club.

Federer, who had never lost a match at Wimbledon after winning the first set, claimed the first set tie-break despite Nadal’s gallant effort to save three consecutive set points at 3/6.

An attacking Federer made many forays to the net but Nadal had his blistering passes dialed in. The Spaniard saved a break point in the first game of the third set and then didn’t face another break point until Federer claimed the decisive break in the sixth game of the fifth set.

Having seen Nadal save 16 of 17 break points against him to win Roland Garros, Federer twice rallied from 15/40 in the fifth set to avoid going down an early break.

Federer, who clubbed 65 winners – including 24 aces and a plethora of crosscourt backhand winners – equaled Bjorn Borg’s record of five consecutive Wimbledon titles. Nadal was attempting to become the first player since Borg in 1980 to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year, a feat he wouldn’t have to wait much longer to accomplish.

2008 Final, Nadal d. Federer 64 64 67(5) 67(8) 97
For the third year in a row, here they were, defending champion Federer and reigning Roland Garros champion Nadal. The two were owning the European clay and grass swings, making it six straight Roland Garros-Wimbledon finals between the two of them.

In one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of their 18-match rivalry, Nadal won the first set but fell Federer looked to have things under control in the second with a 3-0 lead.

The World No. 2 Nadal, however, fought back to silence the Centre Court crowd and take a two sets to zero lead. The third set was interrupted by rain, with Federer leading 5-4. The duo returned after a 71-minute delay and, despite windy conditions, held on for a tie-break. Federer forged ahead 5/2 and eventually clinched the set on his third set point.

The fourth set moved into an inevitable tie-break, which kept the thousands of spectators on Centre Court on the edges of their seats. Two unforced errors from Federer on the forehand wing gave Nadal his first championship point at 7/6. One shot and the Swiss’ reign would have ended right there, but again his serve rescued him.

Nadal, though, struck a forehand winner with Federer approaching the net for his second championship point at 8/7. Serving for the match, Nadal was drawn to the net by Federer who passed the 22-year-old with a backhand winner down the line. With Nadal’s confidence dented, Federer seized control of the tie-break and took the final to a decisive set.

More rain interrupted the match at 2-2 in the fifth set. After a 30-minute delay, the final resumed and as darkness set in, Nadal finally converted his fourth break point opportunity for an 8-7 lead after Federer hit a forehand long.

Another championship point went begging, but at the fourth time of asking Nadal clinched the 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(8), 9-7 victory in four hours and 48 minutes. It was the longest final in Wimbledon history (since 1877). The battle for the No. 1 ATP Ranking had just intensified, and the greatest match ever played had just finished.

In the years since, the match has become commonly known as one of the greatest ever. Sports Illustrated tennis writer Jon Wertheim later wrote a book – which spawned a documentary – about the match, titled, “Strokes of Genius: Federer, Nadal, and the Greatest Match Ever Played”.

novak djokovic vs roberto bautista agut at wimbledon 2019

Djokovic Has A Tough Match With Agut

Novak Djokovic only has to look back a few months to remind himself that he shouldn’t underestimate his next opponent at Wimbledon.

The top-ranked Serb will be facing Roberto Bautista Agut, a player who beat him in both of their meetings in 2019 — on hard courts in Doha and Miami.

So while the match is pitting a four-time Wimbledon champion with 15 major titles against a player in his first Grand Slam semifinal, recent history suggests that things might not be quite so one-sided.

“He has won twice against me so far this year. That’s certainly going to give him confidence coming into the match,” Djokovic said.

Ahead of the quarterfinals, Bautista Agut was — somewhat surprisingly — the only player who hadn’t dropped a set this tournament. That streak ended against Guido Pella, but the 23rd-seeded Spaniard still won 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Djokovic had an easier time against David Goffin after erasing an early break, winning 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

Djokovic is known for his ability to extend rallies and keep the ball in play with his defensive ability, and Bautista Agut said that’s a style of play that suits him well.

“He is very solid from baseline. He likes to play a lot of rallies,” Bautista Agut said. “Well, I like to play against (an) opponent like this, to play a match with a lot of rallies. Against Novak, that’s what we do.”

On the grass at Wimbledon, though, there might not be so many of those rallies. But Djokovic thinks Bautista Agut could be even more dangerous on the quicker surface.

“The ball bounces lower on the grass, which is I think more suitable to his style of the game. He doesn’t like when the ball bounces higher to his backhand,” Djokovic said. “Obviously playing on grass, it’s different. Semifinals of Grand Slam, (I’m) going to try to use my experience in being in these kind of matches.”

With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal set to square off in the other semifinal, Bautista Agut is the odd man out in a final four that includes the sport’s ever present Big Three. In fact, it seems not even he had expected to make it this far.

The Spaniard had scheduled his bachelor party for this week instead.

“I had planned to be in Ibiza right now. We had everything organized already. My friends, six of them, are all there,” Bautista Agut said. “Well, it feels better to be here in London.”

serena williams winning with andy murray at wimbledon 2019

ANDY MURRAY AND SERENA WILLIAMS

Playing mixed doubles at Wimbledon, Serena Williams and Andy Murray seemed to be having fun out there on court.

They definitely had time for some laughs in their post-match news conferences — even after losing in the third round.

Williams said she enjoyed appearing in front of the media alongside the two-time men’s champion at the All England Club because much of the focus was on Murray and his chances of returning to singles.

“Andy gets asked every question about his body and the U.S. Open. Literally every question in a different way, but it’s the same question,” Williams said after losing to top-seeded Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. “It’s great for me because I get to sit here and just look.”

Then, as if she were one of the reporters, Williams started a mini-exchange with her doubles partner.

“How is your body?” she asked.

“Feels good, thanks,” came the reply.

“Are you going to be able to play New York?” Williams asked, trying to suppress her laughter.

“I don’t know,” Murray answered, mimicking previous replies he’d given this week. “I need to train, get stronger. We’ll see. I’m not sure.”

Murray missed last year’s Wimbledon tournament with a hip injury. Since hip replacement surgery this year, he has been playing only doubles.

On Tuesday, after reaching the third round in mixed doubles, Murray was asked repeatedly if he would be able to get back to singles, possibly in time for the U.S. Open. He wasn’t able to give a definitive answer, but while he was trying to satisfy the questioners, Williams looked on laughing to herself.

SAM QUERREY’S RANKING

After missing the French Open with an injury, a run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals has given Sam Querrey high hopes for the rest of the season.

Querrey pushed Rafael Nadal hard in the opening set on Wednesday before losing 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to the third-seeded Spaniard, and said his recent performances on grass has given him a “boost” heading into the American hard-court season. Querrey also reached the final at the Eastbourne grass-court warmup.

“To have three months off, come back, make a final and a quarterfinal, I feel confident,” Querrey said. “Hopefully this will carry over to the summer.”

Querrey has beaten both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray at Wimbledon in the past and made the semifinals in 2017. But he has fallen to 65th in the rankings, having been as high as No. 11 last year. If he keeps playing like he has been at the All England Club, though, he could soon be knocking on the door to the top 10 again.

“This is a good stepping stone for that,” he said. “Hopefully I can win a handful of matches (in the U.S.) and keep my ranking going in the right direction.”

Whole30: Reset your body along with your lifestyle

The Whole30 diet (I prefer the word lifestyle) is a nutritional program, designed to work for 30 days. In that time, it changes the way you eat and feel. Bottom line is you have to get rid of the potential inflammatory foods and drinks in the diet and eat three “clean” meals a day. That would mean meat, veggies, fruit, eggs, and seafood.

Here are some great tips on how to do the Whole30 diet successfully

Don’t believe you can’t do it

Remember it’s not forever; it’s just for 30 days, and not that hard when you compare it to other things.

That means not setting yourself up for failure

There are strict rules and if the diet says 30 days, it means 30 days and not 29. It doesn’t mean being strict for 5 days, then going out and celebrating with a pizza before you “grunge” on to the next five days.

It’s easier with a friend

This can be really helpful and makes it easier, and more fun. And besides that, it makes you more accountable to someone so you stick to it.

Buy all the produce that is applicable to the diet

It is fun experimenting, especially if you know it is a mere 30 days. Buy all your produce beforehand, checking out your favorite type recipes.

Don’t forget to meal prep

Meal prepping is helpful and especially if you work through the week. Maybe prep on a Sunday afternoon for example, preparing all your meals for the following week and storing them in the refrigerator, ready to eat. You will be so glad you did; it helps to keep you focused.

whole 30 diet food to eat and not eat 2019

Advantages of Whole30 Lifestyle

Try it for yourself, it takes just 30 days and you might find that the supposed benefits outweigh any challenges you might face. Those who have been on this diet report these changes:

Your skin becomes flawless

This diet is reported to make the skin glow, improving the tone, texture and overall appearance.

 Clear eyes.

Stress takes its toll on the eyes and particularly when you get older, showing up as red and dull-looking. After a couple of days on the Whole30 diet, you will notice the whites of your eyes are aglow – shiny and bright.

Energy abounds

If you are a kind of sugar addict, you might find the beginning a bit tough. When you start detoxing from the sugar, you might even experience more of an energy slump in fact. But after that, your energy becomes boundless.

Doesn’t better sleep sound wonderful?

Many people even take sleep medication so that they can get a good night’s rest. And for some a real challenge is falling asleep. When you are on the Whole 3 diet, it is reported that one falls asleep naturally.

Gone with feeling bloated

Even though you might not jump onto the scale every day to see if the diet is making a difference, you won’t really need to, because just everything in your body will feel better. You will just notice that your stomach looks trimmed.

If you read up on the Whole30 Lifestyle, you will see for yourself that the diet helps you cut out inflammatory foods, foods that disrupt your gut and which are psychologically unhealthy. I’m not a big fan of the word ‘diet,’ as it’s always made me feel like I’m missing out on something. I like saying lifestyle change as it gives all the best connotations.

Some diseases that Whole30 is good for:

  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • ADD, or attention deficit disorder
  • Celiac Disease
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • High blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Lupus
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, and others

Not meant for long-term

It is important to take note that the Whole30 diet is a pretty restrictive kind of diet and not meant to be long-term. When your 30 days are up, you need to transition back to a more healthful, balanced way of heating. You need to realize that it is not a permanent diet and is not a prescription for how to eat. That’s why it’s called the Whole30 diet. It’s just 30 days of eating whole foods whilst exploring a more mindful and purposeful approach to what goes into your mouth. And while you are at it, remember to check labels because so many prepackaged goods have sugar and additives added. When in doubt, concentrate only the whole foods that Whole30 comprises; veggies, fruits, meats, nuts, and seafood.

The end goal of the Whole30 diet is to reset your body, to start slowly adding back healthy nutritional foods, and checking out and eliminating the ones that cause adverse reactions. Here’s to success with your new lifestyle!

That Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun feud continues dredging up memories

In today’s world, attention spans have the life of an adult Mayfly, but in the case of Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun, this controversy refuses to go away. Its been over a week now which is a record when it comes to internet feuds. Even Swifts feud with Katy Perry ebbed and flowed for years, but was nearly forgotten until the two came back together again this year.

Lily Allen kept things alive with her Instagram support going against Big Machine label boss Scooter Braun. Posting on Instagram over the weekend, Allen wrote:

“So, this week we had Taylor Swift expose a pretty brutal side of the music industry, some middle aged multi millionaire white dudes doing what they do best, controlling, belittling and humiliating the very people that they couldn’t do without.”

Lily Allen, Instagram

She then went on to praise Kate Nash’s 2018 show ‘Underestimate The Girl’, which is about her own experiences of sexism in the music industry.

“Now, our very own Kate Nash has done something spectacular here, I think consumers have little to no idea how hard it is to survive in the industry today, please please please if youre lost for things to do this weekend, please watch this,” Allen wrote. “It’s a real eye-opener. MUSICIANS WORLDWIDE I BEG WE START A PROPER UNION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS, we need to change this system. POWER IS NEVER GIVEN, IT HAS TO BE TAKEN.”

John Fogerty

Even musician John Fogerty has jumped into the debate as he discussed the struggle had winning his Creedance Clearwater Revival publishing rights. He even offered some advice:

I wouldn’t stop singing the songs. That’s something I did, and I don’t advise that. That really harmed my career. That’s something I learned. But I did it for me, you know. That was a point of self-pride and dignity, I guess, and that’s why I did that. I did the best I could with the hand I was dealt.

But I would say that she seems, especially in this world of social media, I’m quite certain that 99% of her fans are on her side. The main thing is to have a support group. It’s horrible to have to do this alone. Especially because the name-calling starts, and when people run out of the truth, they start trying to attack your character. I think my advice would be to keep doing what you’re doing. I think her fans want her to stick up for herself, because she always has. … I’m sure she could have raised the money to have this happen. It sounds pretty spiteful that Scott (Borchetta) wanted to sell the label to her only real enemy, as far as I know. He was the manager of Kanye, and Kanye did some pretty dreadful things publicly to Taylor.

He also shared advice on processing the anger Swift is obviously feeling right now.

Yeah, you’re very angry inside. It’s like somebody twisting the knife every day. That’s probably why I felt so empty when I first heard the news. And I’m not smart enough to know what her way out is. It would be great if people kind of outside of her circle maybe decided to help. I went to Bill Graham. I thought that he would be a fair witness, like in the old “Stranger in a Strange Land” book — a person that would be respected by both sides and could figure out the answer. But sadly, that didn’t work out either.

Good people think, “Wow, these two neighbors are just screaming at each other every single day. The rest of us should get together and figure out a way to mediate.” Perhaps her lawyer can get some people to actually get in there and meditate and try to actually find a solution for the right reason — because it’s the right thing to do. [Laughs.] I’ve just said something so blazingly unknown to the music business, but it’s the way us normal people think.

How Things Got Started

Taylor Swift’s feuds can captivate the public almost as much as her music, and her latest emotional salvo against one of music’s top managers not only made headlines but got key players in the industry riled up, with the likes of Justin Bieber, Halsey, and Demi Lovato publicly choosing sides as accusations and insults were posted furiously on social media.

But even a week after the storm, experts say Swift and Scooter Braun, who manages Bieber and Ariana Grande and now owns Swift’s masters, will have to find a way to work together — both to preserve Swift’s rich musical legacy but also make money and do good business.

“Whether anyone likes it or not, Scooter Braun just became one of Taylor Swift’s most important business partners (and) these are people that need to work with each other now,” said Bill Werde, former editorial director of Billboard and director of the Bandier program for recorded and entertainment industries at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

″(Scooter) wants her to continue to be the biggest star in the world for as long as possible because that’s how he’s going to get the best return on his investment,” Werde continued. “I think that in the not too distant future you’re going to see … things get better. You know, you’re going to see some olive branches.”

On Sunday, Braun’s Ithaca Holdings announced that it acquired Big Machine Label Group, the label which is led by Scott Borchetta and home to Swift’s first six albums, including the Grammy winners for album of the year, 2008′s “Fearless” and 2014′s “1989.” Swift said in November she signed with Universal Music Group instead of staying at Big Machine because she knew that re-signing with the label would only result in her not owning her future work.

Once the news broke, Swift penned a scathing Tumblr note, saying she was sad and grossed out that her music catalog now belongs to Braun.

“When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter,” she said her post. “Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”

“When Taylor decided to make a deal for future records someplace else, she … certainly knew that Big Machine would be sold probably sooner than later,” said Larry Miller, the director of the music business program at New York University’s Steinhardt school. “It’s unfortunate that she feels the way that she does about the place that her catalog is now going to live.”

But what seemed to first be about music ownership and artists’ rights turned into dramatic theater, as Swift also wrote about her clashes with Kim Kardashian and West, and claimed she didn’t know about the sale of her catalog until the news was announced Sunday. The social media showdown played out throughout the day, with Borchetta providing details of the text he says he sent to Swift about the deal the night before it was announced. He even shared screenshots of a contract between the two of them discussing a possible new deal that would also allow her to own all her masters.

Braun’s wife and his clients including Lovato and Bieber showed him support, while Halsey, Todrick Hall, model-actress Cara Delevingne and music video director Joseph Khan were #TeamTaylor. Even country singer Kacey Musgraves jumped in the ring by liking the Instagram post by Braun’s wife.

It marked another saga in the drama of Swift, who has had a number of public feuds, from former boyfriend Calvin Harris to Katy Perry (who made up with Swift and recently appeared in her latest video, “You Need to Calm Down”).

“I think Taylor, who has led many discussions about what is good for artists in the music business, had an opportunity to lead another one here about control and ownership of your own songs as an artist. But I think she kind of muddled matters by combining this with what felt like a personal vendetta,” Werde said. “Now we’re all talking about which pop star took whose side.”

Swift will release a new album called “Lover” on Aug. 23. Miller said he expects things to work out in the future regarding her catalog.

“About four years ago maybe there was a big Taylor Swift dust up around the launch of Apple Music, right? … and I’m pretty sure they found a way to work together,” Miller said, referencing Swift’s 2015 public letter explaining why she was pulling her songs over Apple Music over payments to artists; Apple agreed with Swift’s stance and they’ve worked together ever since.

“Big Machine under its new ownership with Ithaca Holdings, and Taylor and her team … will find to do what’s right for her and for her catalog.”

RIP Cameron Boyce: ‘Descendants’ actor dies at age 20

Cameron Boyce, the actor who was best known for his role as the teenage son of Cruella de Vil in the Disney Channel movie franchise “Descendants” and TV show “Jessie,” has died at the very young age of 20. While he was more known for his time with Disney, he actually began acting at the age of 8. You can check out all the other things you might not know about Boyce below.

Boyce, who played Carlos de Vil in the “Descendants” movies, died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, according to his spokesperson.

An official cause of death has not been announced, but his family released a statement Sunday saying Boyce “passed away in his sleep due to a seizure that was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated.

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ tops July 4 holiday box office weekend, ‘Toy Story 4’ second spot

It just took a flick of Tom Holland’s web-spraying wrist along with love interest Zendaya for Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” to top the July 4th holiday box office weekend. Not only that, but having one of the biggest lead-ins ever with “Avengers: Endgame” certainly didn’t hurt things for Marvel, who wisely partnered with Sony in the Spiderverse. The web slinger was able to push “Toy Story 4” down a slot.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home,” the first Marvel movie after “Avengers: Endgame,” swung past any franchise or superhero fatigue to dominate the holiday weekend, raking in an estimated $185.1 million since opening Tuesday and earning $93.6 million from Friday to Sunday in North American theaters.

The opening gave Sony Pictures one of its best weeks ever. “Far From Home,” which opened overseas before landing in the U.S., has grossed $580 million worldwide in 10 days of release.

It also came with an assist from Disney’s Marvel Studios, which has partnered with Sony on this and its last two “Spider-Man” releases: 2017′s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and last year’s animated spinoff “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

Though “Far From Home” fell short of the $117 million Friday to Sunday domestic opening of “Homecoming,” its unconventional Tuesday opening paid off. The film’s $39.3 million opening day set a record for any movie on a Tuesday.

To help whet the appetites of Marvel fans — and to approach the record $2.79 billion gross of “Avatar” — Disney re-released “Endgame” in theaters the weekend ahead of “Far From Home.”

Part of the draw of the film, starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, was seeing the first installment in a new chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (“Endgame” still narrowly trails “Avatar,” unadjusted for inflation, with $2.77 billion.)

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” is the second “Spider-Man” movie led by the British actor Tom Holland and the sequel to 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which saw Holland playing the hero in rebooted form. (We’re now on the second revival of the franchise since the trilogy led by Tobey Maguire in the 2000s — Andrew Garfield’s short tenure in the role wrapped up in 2014 with “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” — so Maguire has essentially reached the status of Spider-Grandpa.) In the latest series, Spidey’s eternal crush, MJ, is played by the actress Zendaya.

The new movie was likely bolstered by strong reviews; it currently holds a 91 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With two other Marvel movies, “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame,” already having been released this year, some might have expected to see signs of weary audiences this weekend. But franchise fatigue doesn’t seem to be an issue for Marvel, despite the fact that “Avengers: Endgame,” released in April, hasn’t even yet left the top ten at the box office. That movie, which also features Holland’s Spider-Man, landed in ninth place this weekend, bringing in $3.1 million during its 11th weekend in theaters.

The strong performance of “Far From Home,” which cost approximately $160 million to produce, along with the sustained interest in holdovers like “Toy Story 4,” ″Yesterday,” ″Annabelle Comes Home” and “Aladdin,” helped the industry knock down the deficit compared with this time last year about a percentage point.

Due in part to a number of underperforming sequels including “Godzilla: King of Monsters” and “Men in Black International,” the year is running 8.4% behind last year. But Marvel has been immune to the ups and downs of sequel making — it’s behind the year’s top two films: “Endgame” and “Captain Marvel.”

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, thinks “Far From Home” may have turned the tide.

“This movie was exactly the shot in the arm the summer needed, emotionally and spiritually if not financially,” said Dergarabedian, who noted the weekend overall was roughly equal to the same timeframe last year. “The whole notion of franchise fatigue, while true in some cases, is not in all. When movies aren’t great, that’s when people get fatigued.”

Perhaps just as cheering for the industry is how well a number of films are holding.

After two weeks atop the box office, “Toy Story 4” slid a modest 43% to second place, with $34.3 million. It has now taken in $650 million globally. Universal Pictures’ Beatles-themed romantic comedy “Yesterday” dropped only 37 percent in its second weekend, with $10.8 million.

The Warner Bros. “Conjuring” spinoff sequel “Annabelle Comes Home” snagged $9.8 million in its second weekend. And Disney’s “Aladdin,” with $7.6 million in its seventh week of release, has accumulated $921.7 million worldwide.

Just behind those films was Ari Aster’s sun-dappled horror tale “Midsommar,” starring Florence Pugh, drawing $6.7 million over the weekend and $10.9 million since opening Wednesday July 3. The debut was well shy of the $13.6 million opening of Aster’s first-feature sensation “Hereditary,” starring Toni Collette, which became A24′s highest grossing film, with $79.3 million worldwide. This was the only new film in the top ten aside from “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

A24 nevertheless hailed the results for “Midsommar,” saying “it firmly cements Aster as one of the most exciting new directors to come around in a long while.”

Religion comes to Democrats with 2020 presidential election

Religion used to be the monopoly of the Republican party harking back to Ronald Reagan, but now Democrats have realized that they can embrace it as well. They plan on using it differently. More like as it was meant to be and not as a weapon against those who are viewed as different.

When 10 Democratic presidential candidates were pressed on immigration policy during their recent debate, Pete Buttigieg took his answer in an unexpected direction: He turned the question into a matter of faith.

Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, accused Republicans who claim to support Christian values of hypocrisy for backing policies separating children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border. The GOP, he declared, “has lost all claim to ever use religious language again.”

It was a striking moment that highlighted an evolution in the way Democrats are talking about faith in the 2020 campaign. While Republicans have been more inclined to weave faith into their rhetoric, particularly since the rise of the evangelical right in the 1980s, several current Democratic White House hopefuls are explicitly linking their views on policy to religious values. The shift signals a belief that their party’s eventual nominee has a chance to win over some religious voters who may be turned off by President Donald Trump’s abrasive rhetoric and questions about his character.

“The bar for Democrats on reaching broad swaths of the American faith community is lower than ever because of Donald Trump,” said Michael Wear, who led White House faith outreach during President Barack Obama’s first term and re-election. Wear said Democrats have an opportunity to show faith voters they don’t just “have a seat at the table, the values table is our table.”

Buttigieg, an Episcopalian who married his husband in his home church, often invokes his faith on the campaign trail and has tangled over values with Vice President Mike Pence, an evangelical Christian. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a practicing Methodist and former Sunday school teacher, recently declared that all of her expansive policy proposals “start with a premise that is about faith” as she cited a favorite biblical verse about Jesus urging care for “the least of these.” New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker has called Jesus “the center of my life” and excoriates Trump for what he calls “moral vandalism.”

Personal Faith Not Weaponizing

John Carr, founder of Georgetown University’s Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, urged Democrats to focus more on their personal faith and avoid wielding religion as a political weapon.

“When you use faith as a way to go after your adversaries, it sounds more like a tactic and less an expression of who you are,” said Carr, who spent more than two decades as an adviser to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Regardless of Democrats’ changing tactics, Trump and Republicans are all but certain to maintain their grip on one of the most influential religious voting blocs, white evangelicals; 8 in 10 who self-identified with that group voted Republican in the 2018 midterm elections, according to media surveys. Though Trump rarely discusses his own religious identity and isn’t seen as particularly devout, he’s won the loyalty of many evangelicals through his administration’s successful push for conservative judicial nominees and focus on anti-abortion policies.

Democrats have more appeal, and opportunity, with other religious voters. VoteCast showed Democrats captured half of self-described Catholics and 42% of Protestants in last year’s midterms.

Democrats have long had to walk a tightrope with religious voters, given that their support for abortion and LGBTQ rights is at odds with leaders of several prominent denominations.

Embracing Differences

The 2020 candidates aren’t shying away from those differences. Warren, for example, opposes the United Methodist Church’s prohibition on same-sex marriages and LGBTQ pastors, which has prompted more progressive congregations to weigh a split.

“Elizabeth believes equal means equal, and that’s true in marriage, in the workplace, and in every place,” spokeswoman Saloni Sharma said.

Instead, they see an opening to talk about religion as a driver of their basic values, not a litmus test. Immigration offers one such opportunity, given that Trump’s detention policies have drawn criticism from leaders of multiple faiths, including some evangelicals.

Jim Wallis, founder of the Christian social justice group Sojourners, described the drowning of a father and his toddler daughter who attempted to cross the border as a test of faith for policymakers. Many devout Latino voters who are being courted to vote Republican next year “believe that’s a religious question,” Wallis said.

The Democratic candidates come from a variety of religious backgrounds and differ in how they speak about faith on the campaign trail.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand identifies as Catholic but regularly attends evangelical services as well as Mass, her campaign said. Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke said in a statement to media outlets that he was raised attending Catholic Mass, but, “As an adult, I have found a stronger connection with God outside of the church.”

California Sen. Kamala Harris and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders speak about their faith less frequently than some of the others. But Sanders — who would be the first Jewish president — recently joined liberal Jewish activists for a picture that identified them as Jews against Israel’s policies toward Palestinians.

Joe Bidens Struggle

Former Vice President Joe Biden has openly struggled to reconcile his Catholic faith with his party’s more liberal position on abortion. In the 1970s, he said the Supreme Court went “too far” in legalizing abortion nationwide and later said abortion should be legal but not government funded. He reversed that position only last month under intense pressure from his Democratic opponents, drawing a public reprimand from the archbishop of Philadelphia.

But Biden flouts his church’s hard-line positions against homosexuality and same-sex marriage. “We are all God’s children,” he explained last month at a Human Rights Campaign gala in Ohio.

Booker speaks often about his faith as he campaigns. His home church is Metropolitan Baptist in Newark, New Jersey, and his campaign said he attends services whenever he isn’t traveling to early voting states.

The New Jersey senator generally avoids direct use of religion to criticize the GOP, but he told a South Carolina pastor during a CNN town hall in March that “the Bible talks more about poverty, about greeting the stranger, about being there for the convicted … than it talks about the kind of toxic stuff you often hear the president spewing.”

Serena Williams winning ways at Wimbledon plus Fabio Fognini bomb apology

Like Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams proved that no injury could hold her back, and Saturdays two wins at Wimbledon 2019 made the point. Fabio Fognini was fined after his bomb comment made in anger which he did apologize for.

Williams Winning Ways

Williams walked into her news conference at Wimbledon holding her phone, a cold bottle of water and a statistics sheet that reinforced what was clear from watching her third-round singles victory Saturday:

She is as close to being back to her best as she’s been in a while.

Williams, hampered for much of this season by injuries or illness, took a step forward against 18th-seeded Julia Goerges, a powerful hitter in her own right who lost to the American in last year’s semifinals at the All England Club. Sure enough, Williams hit serves at up to 120 mph, put in a tournament-best 71 percent of her first serves, never faced so much as one break point and won 6-3, 6-4.

“It’s been an arduous year for me,” said Williams, who had competed only 12 times in 2019 until this week, mostly because of a bothersome left knee that finally is pain-free. “So every match, I’m hoping to improve tons.”

Maybe it was a good thing she played twice Saturday, then.

About 4½ hours after getting past Goerges at No. 1 Court, Williams headed out to Centre Court for her much-ballyhooed debut as Andy Murray’s teammate in mixed doubles. Other than one slip near the net when she lost her footing in the first set — she was fine and laughed it off — Williams looked good during the 6-4, 6-1 win against Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi, including smacking one serve at 122 mph, equaling the fastest hit in singles by any woman (her, naturally) during the tournament.

“Andy and I both love the competition. I know we both want to do well,” Williams said. “We’re not here just for show.”

She rarely is.

But if Williams is going to win an eighth singles championship at Wimbledon, and a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title overall, she will want more performances like the one she gave against Goerges.

Forceful, yes, but nothing was forced.

“I play pretty good when I’m calm, but also super-intense, just finding the balance in between there,” the 37-year-old Williams said. “So it’s a hard balance to find, because sometimes when I’m too calm, I don’t have enough energy. Still trying to find that balance.”

Two more key stats on the paper she brought to her media session: She produced more winners than unforced errors, 19-15, while Goerges finished with 32 forced errors, a reflection of just how difficult Williams can make it for opponents to handle shots she sends their way.

Goerges credited Williams with causing havoc with her returns, as well.

After averaging 10 aces in the first two rounds, Goerges was limited to half that many.

Of more significance, perhaps, was that Williams’ stinging replies to serves immediately put her in control of points.

“It’s fair to say that she builds up enormous pressure with her returns,” Goerges said. “That means I need to go to the limit in my service games.”

After the traditional middle Sunday off, action resumes Monday with all fourth-round men’s and women’s singles matches.

Williams, who is seeded 11th, will face No. 30 Carla Suarez Navarro, while the other matchups on the top half of the women’s field established Saturday are No. 1 Ash Barty, who has a 15-match winning streak, against unseeded Alison Riske of the U.S.; No. 21 Elise Mertens against Barbora Strycova; and two-time champion Petra Kvitova against No. 19 Johanna Konta of Britain.

On the bottom half, it will be the 15-year-old American sensation Coco Gauff vs. No. 7 Simona Halep; No. 3 Karolina Pliskova vs. Karolina Muchova; No. 8 Elina Svitolina vs. No. 24 Petra Martic; and Dayana Yastremska vs. Shuai Zhang.

In the men’s draw, eight-time champion Roger Federer and two-time winner Rafael Nadal both won in straight sets Saturday to move closer to a semifinal showdown. Federer’s record 17th visit to the fourth round at Wimbledon will come against No. 17 Matteo Berrettini, an Italian never before this far at the grass-court tournament.

“For me, I’m very happy how it’s going so far,” said Federer, a 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (4) winner over No. 27 Lucas Pouille. “I hope it’s going to take a special performance from somebody to stop me, not just a mediocre performance.”

Nadal, who defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, meets unseeded Joao Sousa next.

No. 8 Kei Nishikori meets Mikhail Kukushkin, and Sam Querrey plays Tennys Sandgren in the first Week 2 matchup at Wimbledon between two American men since Pete Sampras beat Jan-Michael Gambill in the 2000 quarterfinals.

Kukushkin’s four-set victory over Jan-Lennard Struff at Court 12 was interrupted when a 60-year-old female spectator had to be resuscitated after collapsing.

Sandgren beat No. 12 Fabio Fognini 6-3, 7-6 (12), 6-3 at tiny Court 14, with its 318 seating capacity. Fognini unleashed a tirade in Italian at one moment, saying he wanted a bomb to explode at the All England Club. He later said his comments came in the heat of the moment because he was upset about not playing well and the condition of the court’s grass.

“If I offended anyone, I apologize,” said the volatile Fognini, who was fined $27,500 at Wimbledon in 2014 for unsportsmanlike conduct and is in a Grand Slam probationary period after getting kicked out of the 2017 U.S. Open. “That definitely wasn’t my intention.”

Fabio Fognini Fined Over Bomb Comment

Already on Grand Slam probation, top-10 player Fabio Fognini could be in more trouble after saying during his third-round match at Wimbledon on Saturday that he wanted a bomb to hit the All England Club.

During a three-set loss to Tennys Sandgren at tiny Court 14, the 10th-ranked Fognini referred in Italian to the “damned English” and said he wished “a bomb would explode at the club.”

More than 1,000 bombs fell in the area during World War II, destroying thousands of nearby homes, and 16 fell on the tournament grounds. One hit Centre Court.

At his news conference Saturday, Fognini said his comments came in the heat of the moment. He said he was upset about not playing well and the condition of the court’s grass.

“If I offended anyone, I apologize,” Fognini said in Italian. “That definitely wasn’t my intention.”

The volatile Fognini, who is married to 2015 U.S. Open champion Flavia Pennetta, also bloodied knuckles on his right hand after punching his racket during the match against Sandgren.

An All England Club spokeswoman said there was no immediate comment from tournament officials.

But the episode will be investigated to determine whether it rises to the level of a major offense, because he is still under a two-year probation stemming from when he insulted a female chair umpire at the 2017 U.S. Open and got kicked out of that tournament.

In October 2017, the Grand Slam Board said Fognini would be suspended for two major tournaments if he commits another major offense before the end of this year.

He was docked a then-record $27,500 of his prize money at Wimbledon in 2014 for a series of outbursts during a first-round victory.

Kevin Spacey loses one accuser as Scotland Yard steps in

Two time Oscar winning actor Kevin Spacey saw one of his multiple accusers drop a lawsuit against him, but Scotland Yard has now stepped in to question him.

British police have travelled to the U.S. to interview Kevin Spacey about sexual assault allegations.

The Metropolitan Police is investigating six claims of sexual assault and assault against the former “House of Cards” star, who ran London’s Old Vic Theatre between 2004 and 2015.

Variety reported Saturday that British detectives interviewed Spacey in May.

British police don’t identify suspects until they have been charged. Without naming Spacey, the London force said that in May “a man was voluntarily interviewed under caution in America by officers from the Met’s Complex Case Team. He was not arrested. Inquiries are ongoing.”

“Under caution” means the interview was recorded and can be used in future prosecutions.

Spacey’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In 2017, American actor Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey, who is now 59, had climbed on top of him on a bed when Rapp was 14 and Spacey 26.

After Rapp’s allegation, the Old Vic conducted an investigation into its former leader. It said it had received 20 allegations of inappropriate behavior by Spacey and had encouraged 14 of the complainants to go to the police with the earliest being in 1996 before his tenure there. The theater’s own investigation found that Spacey’s “stardom and status at The Old Vic may have prevented people, and in particular junior staff or young actors, from feeling that they could speak up or raise a hand for help.” The theater said that 20 men had come forward with claims against Spacey.

The award winning actor faces allegations on both sides of the Atlantic. Spacey is still expected to face trial on a charge of indecent assault stemming from the incident. Spacey has also been sued by a massage therapist who alleges that Spacey tried to force him to grab the actor’s genitals.

Kevin Spacey Accuser Drops Lawsuit

A young man who says Kevin Spacey groped him in a Nantucket bar in 2016 has dropped his lawsuit against the Oscar-winning actor, his lawyer said Friday.

Spacey still faces a criminal charge. He pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and battery in January.

His accuser’s lawyer, Mitchell Garabedian, announced in an email that the suit filed June 26 in Nantucket Superior Court has been voluntarily dismissed. No reason was provided either by Garabedian or in the court filing. Garabedian said he would have no further comment. A telephone message was left at his office.

According to the court filing, the suit was dismissed “with prejudice,” which means it cannot be refiled.

An email was left Friday requesting comment from Alan Jackson, Spacey’s attorney. Jackson has previously said the man is lying in the hopes of winning money in a civil case against Spacey.

The legal development could have significance for the criminal case against Spacey, legal experts say.

While there are a range of reasons why a civil suit is dropped so quickly after being filed, it could be an indicator a private settlement was reached and that the accuser may ultimately stop cooperating with prosecutors, said William Korman, a former prosecutor in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office who is now a criminal defense lawyer specializing in sexual assault cases.

“Any settlement could not be conditioned on a refusal to cooperate with the prosecution,” said Korman. “Nevertheless, money is a great motivator for an individual not to follow through.”

It’s also possible prosecutors, upset with the timing of the civil suit, specifically asked the accuser to drop it, said David Yannetti, a former prosecutor who is now a criminal defense lawyer in Boston. The civil suit was filed months into the ongoing criminal case, but such suits are typically filed after a criminal case is decided, he said.

“Maybe the prosecution said it’s either about money or it’s about a crime, but it can’t be about both and you have to make a decision on where you want to go with this,” Yannetti said.

The civil suit was likely filed before completion of the criminal case because the three-year statute of limitations is approaching, added Yannetti.

“We’re operating with very little info, but it’s clear something unusual is going on here,” he said. “Either the prosecution got involved or there was some sort of civil settlement.”

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe’s office declined to comment on whether prosecutors had any role in the withdrawal of the civil suit or whether a settlement has been reached.

“The criminal case is independent from the civil case and will go forward,” Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore said in an email.

Garabedian’s client, the son of Boston TV anchor Heather Unruh, alleged Spacey got him drunk and sexually assaulted him at the Club Car restaurant where the then-18-year-old man worked as a busboy.

The criminal case has centered on the cellphone used by the accuser the night of the alleged groping, which the defense says it needs in order to recover text messages it says will support Spacey’s innocence.

Nantucket District Court Judge Thomas Barrett has ordered the man to hand the phone over to the defense, but his attorney said they cannot find it. The judge has given them until Monday to produce the phone.
