With the UFC continuing to grow as a sport, the number of star fighters will expand with that growth. Years ago there were just a handful of fighters that could get national attention. Guys like Chuck Liddell helped paved the way back when the MMA sport was climbing the ladder of respect as a sport. Now in 2014 there is more interest in the UFC than ever, and there are more and more fighters who can sell tickets as well as get mainstream media attention. Oh yea, they do pretty well at beating down the competition in their spare time. Here are the top 10 baddest UFC fighters of 2014.
1. Jon Jones –
The clear champion of the sport, pound for pound. The sport is too tough to stay champion forever, but I will enjoy the greatness of Jones as long as it lasts.
2. Ronda Rousey –
No better entity exists in MMA than Rousey when it comes to gaining eyeballs for the sport. Rousey is a bad ass beauty that the big sports networks cannot ignore.
3. Chris Weidman –
He has beaten the “greatest fighter in the history of mankind”, Anderson Silva, twice. I love The Spider, but for those who say those wins are flukey, all I can say is …scoreboard.
4. Cain Velasquez –
Hardcore fight fans can appreciate any weight class but the average sports fan leans more toward the big guys. Cain is fun to watch and with the right matchups, could become a UFC legend.
5. Demetrious Johnson –
“Mighty Mouse” may be in the lightest of UFC classes, but he is as exciting as any fighter today. His skill level is off the charts, but if you blink you will miss some of his lightning fast moves.
6. Jose Aldo –
The featherweight champ is the official UFC #2 fighter pound for pound. He would be #1 if not for the non-human fighter that is Jon Jones.
7. Anthony Pettis –
He has beaten one of the best, Benson Henderson, twice. Being the champ in one of the toughest divisions in the UFC is not an easy thing, and he will have to stay on his game to remain on top.
8. Johny Hendricks –
The current welterweight champion has had as tough a road to a belt as anyone in MMA. He got robbed of a win over the legendary Georges St-Pierre and had to overcome a hungry Robbie Lawler in his first title defense.
9. Alexander Gustafsson –
The man who took Bones Jones to a new level of fighting cannot be ignored. The inevitable rematch could jump Gustafsson to a higher spot on this list next go around.
10. Benson Henderson –
Styles make fights and certain styles are hard for even the most skilled fighters to overcome. Henderson is a top-notch fighter and former champion that needs to find a way to beat his
