10/23/2015: Whispie has been adopted!

Another week has gone by, which means that we once again have another adoptable pet to feature. Our adoptable pet of the week is facilitated through our teaming up with North Shore Animal League America.

North Shore Animal League America is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. For over 70 years, North Shore has been rescuing animals and advocating their proper care. Since opening in 1944, the organization has saved the lives of over 1,000,000 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies.

The shelter is located in Port Washington, New York, where it facilitates animal rescue and adoptions, as well as plays a lead role in the no-kill movement. North Shore Animal League America continues to innovate better and more sustainable ways to care for pets, in order to create a brighter future for animals everywhere.

With their vision, “To put an end to animal cruelty and euthanasia and to create a world in which all companion animals find compassionate permanent homes.” North Shore Animal League America continues to make a positive difference in the lives of countless animals.

Whispie is a stunning, young tortoiseshell cat, with bright green eyes. She was rescued from the New York Tri-State area and is patiently waiting at North Shore for a new home.

Those who have interacted with her at the North Shore shelter note that she shares many personality traits to that of a dog. This is shown in her love of licking people’s hands and giving plenty of kisses. She adores being cuddled up on a lap, but also can be very playful and can be seen running around and chasing after her favorite toys.

Her affectionate personality is further demonstrated in the adorable purring sound she lets out when she is picked up and when she is curled up cuddling. Thus, Whispie is the perfect warm and loving addition to your family as we enter the cold, dark winter season.

However, there are quite a few benefits to adopting a cat. Some of which include companionship, entertainment, life-lessons as well as both mental and physical improvements such as reducing stress, high blood pressure and even help cope with anxiety.”

With her mix of calm and playful personality, Whispie is an ideal friend for people of all ages. She can help children learn responsibility, value for life, socialization and help build their self-esteem. Meanwhile, she can also provide ample companionship to adults and seniors and improve their feelings of self-worth. Taking care of her can also help provide a sense of purpose for her owners.

It has been said that pet owners smile more, laugh more and form special friendships with other animal owners and lovers. Undoubtedly, Whispie will bring these improvements to her new owners’ lives and help them lead a more joyful life.

As mainly independent animals, cats are often low maintenance and are perfect for those who live an active and busy lifestyle who may not be able to take on the responsibility that is associated with owning a dog.

Being an adult cat, Whispie is well behaved and has already been litter-boxed trained. Therefore, her new family will be able to have the flexibility of leaving her home alone when they are out for short periods of time (i.e. work, errands, etc.). Whispie is relatively self-sufficient and therefore, does not require the daily walks that most dogs would need.

Animal League America’s Latest Adoptable Pet

meet daisy animal league america pet 2015It’s that time of the week again!

Through our teaming up with North Shore Animal League America, Movie TV Tech Geeks features an adoptable pet every week that is looking for a new home.

North Shore Animal League America, which is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. Since 1944, the organization has strived towards achieving its ultimate vision: “To put an end to animal cruelty and euthanasia and to create a world in which all companion animals find compassionate, permanent homes.” To date, North Shore has helped find homes for over 1,000,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

With their main headquarters in Port Washington, New York, North Shore provides crucial resources such as a pet adoption center, a pet health center that offers affordable veterinary care and much more.

North Shore’s admirable mission has garnered the support of countless celebrities including Beth Stern, Martha Stewart and Tyra Banks.

Today we are pleased to introduce Daisy, the adoptable pet of the week. Daisy is a stunning, Alkita/Husky mix. Daisy was actually adopted from North Shore’s shelter when she was a baby. Unfortunately 11 years later, her family is moving to a home with a no dog policy and therefore Daisy is in need of a new home.

Akita/Husky mixed dogs, also known as Huskitas, are a hybrid of Siberian Huskies and Akitas. They are medium to large dogs that weigh between 70-90lbs. They have very striking features and a soft coat of black, gray, tan and brown fur.

Stemming from their Akita side, these particular dogs are often fairly protective and like to stay close to their owners. They are sometimes even used as alert dogs, as they commonly have some guarding tendencies. With the traits from their Husky side, these dogs are generally very loving, playful and social.

Huskitas normally require very minimal grooming and their fur is easily maintained. Experts suggest that their ears should be cleaned occasionally and they should be bathed on an as-needed basis. It is also recommended that their fur be brushed a couple of times a week, to prevent any matting.

Huskitas are generally easy to train, both in terms of commands and indoor behavior. They are highly intelligent and are incredibly responsive to their owners. In addition, they can usually be trained to be very well mannered, social dogs, which makes them perfect companions for walks around town.

She has already received some training and is completely housebroken. Although she is an older pup, she still has lots of energy and needs an owner who allows her to release some of this energy regularly. It quickly becomes evident that Daisy thrives when she is outdoors and is notably most relaxed and happy when playing in the park or out on a long walk.

Christina Travalja, the Shelter Director at North Shore Animal League America notes, “Anyone who is looking for a companion dog that enjoys going on walks and playing outdoors. Daisy would be the perfect match.”

Daisy is a gentle dog, which prefers a calmer household and would get along best with household pets that are also relatively docile. Due to her size, North Shore suggests that Daisy lives in a household with children who are over 8 years old.

Nonetheless, Daisy can sometimes be shy at first, but once she trusts someone she is quick to shower them with kisses and love. She needs a home where she can feel comfortable to be her playful and affectionate self, while forming a bond with her new family that will last forever.

meet bandit north shore movie tv tech geeks 2015BANDIT IS STILL AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.

Bandit is a lovable 6-year-old Labrador mix which was rescued from a shelter in Virginia. Unfortunately, after five years her previous owners were unable to provide her with the proper attention and love she needed and therefore Bandit is need of a welcoming new home.

When Bandit first arrived at Animal League America, situated in Port Washington, New York, she was very shy and timid in her new surroundings. Fortunately, after the NSALA’s grooming staff gave her some attention and reassurance, Bandit became more comfortable and her warm personality began to shine.

The Senior Director of Operations at North Shore, Sylvia Ottaka notes, “It takes a little bit for Bandit to warm up to you but once she gets to know you, she builds a strong bond. The type of bond that once she sees you, she will run over and give you endless amounts of love and kisses.”

Bandit is notably a well-trained dog and very intelligent when it comes to learning and adapting to new situations and environments. She knows commands such as sit, shake a paw and lay down. In addition to this, she is housebroken, meaning that she is trained to do “her business” outside.

She can speak on command and with a refresher on walking on a leash Bandit will undoubtedly become your new favorite walking buddy.

Labradors are known for their kind, friendly demeanor, as well as their impressive ability to learn and be trained, both of which, Bandit completely embodies. Historically, Labradors were used for their keen sense of smell. They have been used in the navy, military and by police officers, as they can easily pick up scents.

Additionally, Labradors have also been employed as guide dogs and for therapy work. One amazing example of their abilities was back in 2001, a Labrador named Endal placed an unconscious human being in recovery position, retrieved their mobile phone and got a blanket to cover the victim while barking to draw attention to the scene.

Labradors are expected to live about 10-12 years and generally maintain good health throughout their life. Furthermore, although the breed is enthusiastic, they do mature when they are around 3-years-old and begin developing less puppy-like habits.

A fun fact about Labradors is that they are often considered to be the most popular dog in the world. They have been reported as the most popular dog by ownership in numerous countries including Australia, Canada, the UK and the United states. In addition, in the UK and the US, there are well over twice as many Labs registered as the next most popular breed.

Bandit is the perfect representation of this popular and well-loved breed.  She is playful, friendly and is looking for a new family to call her own.

When it comes to other pets, Bandit can sometimes be picky and therefore, she will thrive in a home with no other pets and children who are 12 and older. However, she is very easy going and will fit into any lifestyle. She will happily join you on your daily walk or run, or just as happily be your companion while watching your favorite show on TV.

Bandit has a lot of love to give and therefore deserves a forever home where she can become a part of the family. Check out this video below to see Bandit in action.
