Meet Toby, NSALA’s rescue dog of the week needing a good home

TOBY HAS BEEN ADOPTED

UPDATE: 11/14/2016

Toby found a great new home and will be having a wonderful holiday season thanks to North Shore Animal League America. Check out our Rescue Me section for more rescue pets needing a good home.

The only thing better than snuggling up on the sofa in front of a warm fire on a cold, fall night is doing so with a cuddly pet by your side.  We are pleased to kick off October with our first adoptable pet of the month. As many of you know, Movie TV Tech Geeks have been teaming up with the reputable North Shore Animal League America to raise awareness for pet adoption. By featuring an adoptable cat or dog every week, we have been able to help find homes for countless animals and shine a light on the many animals that are in need.

Even if you don’t live in the area, you can still contact North Shore Animal League, and they can guide you to the closest no-kill rescue shelter in your area for a similar dog or even arrange travel arrangements. If you have a friend you think would be interested, pass these articles on as we are working even harder this year to get even more pets adopted than last year.

North Shore Animal League America, which is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. Since 1944, the organization has strived towards achieving its ultimate vision: “To put an end to animal cruelty and euthanasia and to create a world in which all companion animals find compassionate permanent homes.”

To date, North Shore has helped find homes for over 1,000,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. With their main headquarters in Port Washington, New York, North Shore provides crucial resources such as a pet adoption center, a pet health center that offers affordable veterinary care and much more.

Now, without further ado, please help us give a warm welcome to Toby!

Toby is a four-year-old Silky Terrier Mix. Fortunately, North Shore was able to rescue him from Georgia, and they are now determined to find him the loving home he deserves. Toby is a happy-go-lucky little guy, who brings with him a vibrant spark. While he may be small in stature, he has a big, bright, and infectious personality.

Terriers are known for being a relatively small breed although there are different variations. They were first bred and trained to hunt rodents and vermin. Therefore the breed is known for being active and high-energy. The name terrier is actually in reference to the Latin word “terra” meaning Earth, and it signifies their love of digging which was once useful for finding prey such as moles and badgers.

Due to their trained hunting past, Terriers are also notably intelligent and are quite responsive to training. They are often very single-minded, meaning that they become very concentrated at the task at hand, whether that be playing fetch or hunting prey.

In addition, this particular breed is also known for being territorial. They are often protective of their homes and loved ones, thus, can form very strong bonds with their owners.

Rosie Tombolo, the Kennel Manager at North Shore Animal League America notes, “Toby walks well on a leash and loves attention from his two-legged friends! He has a very soft coat and is hypoallergenic who would be perfect for any adopters who may have allergies.”

Toby is a very friendly dog, especially when he knows there are treats nearby. He is already housebroken – meaning knows to do his business outside.

North Shore Animal League America suggests that Toby goes to a home with children (if any) who are over the age of 10. In addition, he would do best in a house where he is the only four-legged friend wandering around.

Moreover, with his loving personality, his cute snout and his soft fur, Toby is the perfect addition to any suitable household this fall/winter season. He is patiently waiting for the chance to share his joy and love with the family who opens their door, and hearts, to him.

veronica rescue me cat for adoption movie tv tech geeks

Now, please help us give a warm welcome to…Veronica!

At just a year old, Veronica is a Domestic shorthaired cat with a beautiful grey, white and tan coat of fur. She has precious green eyes and perky, rounded ears. Fortunately, North Shore Animal League America was able to rescue Veronica from New Jersey and is now on a mission to find her a loving family.

At North Shore, Veronica lives in the shelter’s cage-free feline habitat, which allows her to socialize with her fellow rescue cats. During her time at the shelter, she has shown to be a very sweet and playful girl. North Shore’s staff believes she will be able to adapt in most home situations. In fact, Veronica would likely even be happy to go to a home that already has a kitty companion hanging around.

Like most of her cat counterparts, Veronica can undoubtedly help mature children learn responsibility, value for life, socialization and help build their self-esteem. She can also provide ample companionship to adults and seniors and improve their feelings of self-worth. Taking care of her can also help provide a sense of purpose for her owners.

It has been said that pet owners smile more, laugh more and form special friendships with other animal owners and lovers. Veronica will surely bring these improvements to her new owners’ lives and help them lead a more joyful life.

Cats are extremely versatile and adaptable animals, making them the perfect pet option for almost every household. As mainly independent animals, cats are often low maintenance and are perfect for those who live an active and busy lifestyle who may not be able to take on the responsibility that is associated with owning a dog.

Rosie Tombolo, the Kennel Manager at North Shore Animal League America notes, “Veronica struts around the cat habitat with great confidence and enjoys hanging out with her all of her other feline friends. She spends a lot of her time perched up high looking out the window.”

Some of Veronica’s favourite past times include: getting treats, stretching out on the nearest cat tree and making use of a nearby cat scratching post.

Furthermore, Veronica’s bright personality and adorable gaze will have any family falling in love. With plenty of joy-filled years ahead of her, Veronica is ready to find a warm, welcoming home to call her own.

If you are interested in adopting Veronica, please e-mail Kennel Manager Jessica Uster atJessicaU@animalleague.org.

Meet Mahoney, NSALAs latest rescue dog ready for a good home 2016 images

At just 8 months old, Mahoney is a Shar-Pei/Cattle dog mix. He was fortunate enough to be rescued by North Shore Animal League America from a municipal shelter in Arkansas. Although he is still very young, he has already shown to be a bright pup. In fact, he already responds to basic commands and performs even better when treats are involved.

The Shar-Pei breed is known for being loyal to their handlers. They love to spend their time running, walking, playing, or even just hanging out on the sofa for the day with the ones they love. However, while they may be notably loyal when it comes to their family, Shar-Peis still [generally] maintain a friendly demeanor when meeting new people/animals.

In terms of caring for a Shar-Pei, they are noted as one of the easier dog breeds to physically maintain. They have short fur that needs very minimal brushing and washing. Mahoney’s other breed, Cattle dog, is also known for being low maintenance when it comes to grooming and physical upkeep.

As demonstrated by Mahoney’s ability to perform basic commands at such a young age, Shar-Peis are highly trainable. Most owners of the breed say that it takes very little time to get them housebroken.

Since Mahoney is still considered to be a puppy, he definitely expends a youthful energy. Around the North Shore shelter he is always wandering about with his tail wagging and a big smile on his face.

Rosie Tombolo, the Kennel Manager at North Shore Animal League America notes, “Mahoney’s tail never stops wagging. He has such a happy disposition and loves getting belly rubs, treats and hugs from his two-legged friends.”

North Shore is looking for a family who has the time to work with Mahoney, teaching him how to behave as he matures into a full-grown dog. Since he is rather rambunctious, the family would need to have some patience and be able to provide the leadership that Mahoney needs. The staff at North Shore believes that Mahoney would do best in a home with children (if any) who are over the age of 12. In addition, they also believe that he would be okay with having another four-legged playmate in his family. It is suggested that any interested adopters who currently have dog(s) bring them in, as it is best to ensure that Mahoney meshes well with his potential future four-legged roommates.

Moreover, Mahoney has an infectious joy that will bring plenty of happiness and light into any [suitable] family that opens their doors and hearts to him.

If you are interested in adopting Mahoney, please e-mail Rachael Rudman at RachaelR@animalleague.org.

leeza rescue cat 2016

Leeza

Our latest feature, Leeza, is an adorable 1-year-old domestic shorthaired Tabby cat. She was rescued by North Shore from the New York Tri-State Area alongside a whole litter of kittens, however, she is the last of the bunch to still be looking for a home. While Leeza is a fairly shy kitty at first, she warms up to people quickly once she gets to know them and she becomes comfortable with her surroundings.

If you are interested in adopting Leeza, please contact Dorit at DoritS@animalleague.org.
