Often people spend Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends. The holiday is typically a time in which people acknowledge and show appreciation for the many positive things in their lives. Given that it’s such a warm and love-filled time of year, it is also the perfect time for you to open up your home to a loving – and deserving -adoptable pet. As many of our loyal readers know, we have been teamed up with North Shore Animal League America for over a year. With North Shore Animal League America’s support, we have been able to help find homes for countless animals throughout the duration of our partnership.
North Shore Animal League America is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. For over 70 years, North Shore has been rescuing animals and advocating their proper care. Since opening in 1944, the organization has saved the lives of over 1,000,000 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies.
The shelter is located in Port Washington, New York, where it facilitates animal rescue and adoptions, as well as plays a lead role in the no-kill movement. North Shore Animal League America continues to innovate better and more sustainable ways to care for pets, in order to create a brighter future for animals everywhere.
Even if you don’t live in the area, you can still contact North Shore Animal League, and they can guide you to the closest no-kill rescue shelter in your area for a similar dog or even arrange travel arrangements. If you have a friend you think would be interested, pass these articles on as we are working even harder this year to get even more pets adopted than last year.
With their vision, “To put an end to animal cruelty and euthanasia and to create a world in which all companion animals find compassionate, permanent homes.” North Shore Animal League America continues to make a positive difference in the lives of countless animals.
Now time to meet this week’s featured pet…. Gopher!
Gopher is an adorable 6-year-old shorthaired domestic cat. He has soft gray and white fur with a vibrant pink nose. North Shore Animal League America rescued Gopher from the New York City area – not too far from their main campus. Although Gopher came to North Shore from an abusive home, he has proven to be an incredibly resilient and loving companion. Since arriving at the shelter, Gopher has demonstrated his love for attention and being in the company of his trusted two-legged friends.
Like most of his cat counterparts, Gopher can undoubtedly help children learn responsibility, value for life, socialization and help build their self-esteem. He can also provide ample companionship to adults and seniors and improve their feelings of self-worth. Taking care of his can also help provide a sense of purpose for his owners.
It has been said that pet owners smile more, laugh more and form special friendships with other animal owners and lovers. Gopher will surely bring these improvements to his new owners’ lives and help them lead a more joyful life.
Cats are extremely versatile and adaptable animals, making them the perfect pet option for almost every household. As mainly independent animals, cats are often low maintenance and are perfect for those who live an active and busy lifestyle who may not be able to take on the responsibility that is associated with owning a dog.
Dorit Shani, the Feline Enrichment Manager at North Shore Animal League America notes, “Gopher would make a perfect addition to any household. He enjoys playing with toys, receiving treats and also loves to curl up for a long cat nap.”
Despite facing some tough times in the past, Gopher is a very loving kitty. In fact, staff at North Shore believes that he will be able to thrive in a household with children (if any) of all ages. In addition, he also would be comfortable joining a family that already has a feline friend (or friends) hanging around.
If you are interested in giving Gopher a loving home, please email Dorit Shani and DoritS@Animalleague.org.

And while being able to introduce our readers to Gopher is already exciting on its own, North Shore has even more exciting news for animal lovers. On Friday, November 25th (Black Friday), North Shore will be hosting a special adoption event. From 9 AM to 8 PM, suitable pet owners can come to the organization’s Port Washington location and adopt one of the hundreds of cats and/or dogs that are waiting to find their forever home. In addition, the shelter is also going to waive the adoption fee for the first 50 people who open up their hearts to a deserving animal. Since many of the adoptable animals at North Shore have been rescued from unhealthy living situations (such as Gopher), as well as potential euthanasia, adopters can feel even more proud of their decision to welcome one of North Shore’s loving animals into their home.
This time of year has become known for being the season of giving, and there is truly no better way to embody this sentiment than by giving one of North Shore’s adoptable pets the home and family they deserve.
