Amazon has been the king of Black Friday and Cyber Monday the past few years, but other giant retailers like Best Buy are keeping up with their online presence, and this holiday season is no different.

The good thing with all this competition is that you, the shopper, winds up becoming the winner as each retailer tries to outdo the other for the most sales. We’ve put Best Buy and Amazon to the test on major tech gifts to see which one outdoes the other and where. As usual, we’ve also thrown in price comparisons along with the product links so you can jump right to what you want without any worry.

While Walmart is the holiday sales king, Amazon Black Friday and Best Buy Black Friday provide arguably its greatest competition – and with good reason. Best Buy has the best HDTV and Galaxy smartphone deals of any retailer while Amazon has a wider product selection and killer deals on its own Echo, Kindle and Fire TV devices. It’s a serious showdown so who comes out on top?

Where Amazon Black Friday 2017 Beats Best Buy Black Friday

Shipping: Best Buy is offering free shipping with no minimum on most orders this holiday season. Unfortunately, it is not expedited shipping, so it may take a few extra days to arrive. Amazon shoppers who do not have a prime account must meet a minimum order size of $25 in order to qualify for free shipping, and orders will take 5-8 business days to arrive. The best option is to sign up for a free 30-day trial (sign-up link) of Amazon Prime. Prime members receive free two-day shipping on all orders with no minimum. Since anyone can enjoy a free 30-day trial of Prime with no cancellation fee, we are giving Amazon the win here.

Amazon Devices: While Best Buy is carrying most of Amazon’s line of electronics this year (and matching the Black Friday prices), it is always better to get it from the source. Additionally, Amazon always seems to have special surprise deals on its own products when Black Friday actually arrives, which is something Best Buy is less likely to do. Both stores will sell the Amazon Echo Dot for $29.99 (save $20) and the New Amazon Echo for $79.99 (save $20), with many other products also sharing the same discount. (Amazon devices link)

Really Cheap TVs: This was a tough one because Best Buy has some really great TV deals this year. Regardless, Amazon is offering a 32-inch TV for $69.99 and a 49-inch 4K TV for $159.99, which Best Buy just cannot compete with from a pricing perspective. Best Buy’s top deal is the Sharp 50-inch 4K TV for $179.99 which is perhaps the best one-off deal of Black Friday, but Amazon’s currently unknown and one-inch smaller 49-inch 4K TV still edges it out in price.

Note: the cheapest 32-inch TV I can find on Amazon at the time of publishing is here and the cheapest 49-inch 4K TV I can find on Amazon at the time of publishing here.

Number of Sale Items: While Best Buy is running a huge sale this year, it will ultimately pale in comparison to the number of items that Amazon will discount. That is not to say Amazon’s sale will be superior, but you will have many more options to choose from, and variety is important when shopping on Black Friday. Amazon’s Black Friday store has been open since November 1st!

Online Deals: Many of Best Buy’s doorbusters will be online this year, but its best one will not. That is, of course, the now infamous Sharp 50-inch LED 2160p Smart 4K Ultra HD Roku TV for $179.99 (save $320) – product link. While this may be the top deal of the year for Black Friday 2017, it is in-store only on Thanksgiving, which is a huge hassle for many people. The luxury of Amazon is that all of its doorbusters, including the best ones, will all be available online.

Where Best Buy Black Friday Beats Amazon Black Friday 2017

Known High-Quality TV Deals: Amazon will have some great deals on premium TVs this year, but the brands and models are not currently known for those with the lowest prices. Even worse, it is unknown what time they will actually go live, and this makes purchasing these TVs a real hassle. Best Buy lists its best TV deals, so the model and specs are known in advance. The Sharp 50-inch 4K TV for $179.99 (product link) is the best TV deal of the year, and it will likely beat anything Amazon has to offer when factoring in price and quality. Additionally, Best Buy’s 55-inch Toshiba 4K UHD TV (55L711U18) for $279.99 (product link) is a top deal, and there are no question marks about it.

In-Store Black Friday Experience: Shopping online in your pajamas is fun, but there is something different about the in-store shopping experience. Best Buy offers the best of both worlds and is set to have one of the top in-store sales of the year. The hours for Thanksgiving and Black Friday are clearly marked, which is something many other stores fail to do. Of course, Amazon’s sale is strictly online.

Known Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy Deals: Best Buy is offering $300 off on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, or Galaxy S8 Plus with qualified activation (product link). It is also offering savings up to $200 with qualified activation on the Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (product link). While Amazon is likely to have similar deals, they have yet to be disclosed and are unlikely match Best Buy’s offers.

Google – Home Mini – Chalk  – Best Buy is offering the Google Home Mini Chalk for $29.99 with a $10 Best Buy gift card. (product link) Since Amazon will not be offering this highly popular item, it is an easy win for Best Buy.

Better Planning Opportunities: Best Buy’s 50-page Black Friday 2017 ad is one of the largest released and features more tech items than any traditional retailer. Amazon simply puts out a small press announce to showcase a few of its doorbusters. While Amazon’s known deals are impressive, most of its sale remains a secret. In short: planning your Black Friday shopping is easier if you do it at Best Buy.

If there’s a rule of thumb here, it’s to go shopping at Best Buy when you know the exact model you want. With Amazon – outside of its Echo, Fire TV and Kindle devices – it’s a place you have to spend time browsing for bargains and monitoring as flash deals come and go throughout the day. But remember that free Amazon Prime membership trial or you won’t get the best from it.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Target and all these major retailers throughout the entire Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2017 holiday shopping period.
